Where to Find the Best Gumbo in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Charles “PeeWee” Armstrong has been running his seafood operation for years now, in the form of home delivery, a pop-up at a CBD bar, and then expanding to a takeout shop in Central City and New Orleans East. There’s also PeeWee’s Crabcakes in Gentilly, a counter-service restaurant serving his signature crab cakes, seafood platters, and Creole specialties like the overflowing, affordable seafood gumbo — a big bowl stuffed with crab legs, shrimp and sausage is $10, a cup just $7." - Beth D’Addono

Show Some Love to These Black-Owned Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater

"Peewee’s Crabcakes draws crowds of locals (and a handful of lucky tourists operating on a solid tip) to its cherry-red storefront. Inside, the dining room hums with R&B on heavy rotation and head-turning plates piled high with seafood. The sit-down, counter service restaurant is the realization of a dream for owner Charles “Peewee” Armstrong, who got his start making delicately crisp crab cakes in the kitchen of his Central City apartment. At Peewee’s, they arrive in a mini size, perched on deviled eggs, stuffed inside po’boys and loaded baked potatoes, or on top of generous platters of stuffed lobster tails and rich seafood pasta. For something lighter, try the superb seafood gumbo, overflowing with crab legs, shrimp, and sausage for under $10." - Vox Creative

I visited this place after receiving a great recommendation from my aunt and I was not disappointed! We took our order to go since it was our dinner movie night. I ordered the potato stuffed with shrimp and it came with a filet of fish and a shrimp sauce! Mmm! Mmm! It was delicious. The Hennessey BBQ shrimp that my husband had was probably even better. I could have eaten both dishes, but I was nice! Next time we will stay in and feel the vibes. The waitress was kind and courteous and the place looked clean. I would recommend visiting here.

Google
This was my first and last time coming to this business, I was so excited to try out peewees cause it’s black owned and the food looks delicious, but I was in for a rude awakening, we walked in the workers welcomed us , we sat down our service was nice we ordered our food and we ordered the Nola punch , everything we ordered as far as food was salty , whoever is back there cooking needs to taste the food before sending it out , yall are going to send someone to the hospital, the whole Atmosphere was just weird the vibe was off !! I will never return I’m very disappointed I had high expectations for this place

Google
I have never enjoyed going out to dine anywhere more than here. It was like going to a family event. We walked in and received a warm greeting. Our waitress was amazing. The food was flawless. If you want a friendly place with amazing food, this is your spot. We tried the egg rolls, crab cakes, seafood stuffed fish, Parmesan mash, and seafood rice. Everything was delightful!

Google
I came here over a year ago and I thought the seafood baked potato was good. It still is!!!!!! The crab cake was PERFECT, texture, flavor, everything. the catfish was fried to perfection. The cheesy baked potato at the bottom was delicious. All that covered in a delicious seafood sauce with shrimp and crawfish. This time I went to eat in and the service was GREAT too. The nola punch was a little too sweet but it was still good. My favorite spot in the big easy.

Google
I drive a charter bus and this was my first time to New Orleans and I stumbled upon this little gem. This is definitely a must try if you have never been here. Not only is the food the best that I've had since I've been in New Orleans (i got the superbowl buffet), the employees are total sweethearts! they all made me feel like I was at home eating dinner with family. One even gave me a hug as I was leaving. I will definitely be back!! You guys are rockstars!!

Google
Best crab cakes I’ve ever had! We were in town for a convention and had seen this place online before we traveled. Holy smokes was this place good! We got a table full of apps and didn’t leave anything on the plates! Everything was amazing and the staff were the most pleasant people we could’ve asked for! Highly recommend this place for locals or visitors!

Google

Google
From entering the facility we were nicely greeted, the food was absolutely amazing however our waitress wasn’t very attentive ( she was nice ) but she never came to see if everything was ok or to offer anything else, I had to ask for ice which really wasn’t a big issue but if I order drink I’d expect to see ice which i barely had any, my husband and our kids didn’t have any at all….it was hot in there. I really wish she had spent more time with us because I really had intentions on tipping bigger than 10.00 the business was slow yet the other two ladies were super friendly to everyone…. All in all I just wanted some of that Louisiana love that we have gotten the past three years we have visited. This was a very special trip for us Would I come again? Yes Would I recommend this place? Yes All of our food was hot, fresh and very well presented!!!!! I recommend everything in the photos I have attached.

Yelp
We ordered via DoorDash and we were NOT disappointed! Our first time here in New Orleans and we chose this place because of the great reviews. We ordered on DoorDash (to the Hyatt House) and the food arrived hot and fresh! So. Much. Flavor! We ordered the Seafood Pasta, Loaded Potato and the Blackened Salmon - all top notch choices. The portions were large. Packed with flavor. I'll be talking about their food to everyone back home in Cali.

Yelp
Let me tell you Peewee's, has been consistent with their delicious po'boys. As someone who doesn't always travel into the city, coming here has always been worth it. The restaurant itself is clean and not overstimulating which is very important to me. The service is quick & friendly. I always feel at home by the employees and the location is right off the highway. I can grab my food and get right back home with no concerns of traffic.

Yelp
This is GrubHub to go order. I went with the crab cakes. I mean it's in the name and it didn't disappoint. I was going to go to colossal crab but I wasn't starving so it was recommended by server that I go with the two smaller ones that pack the punch and she wasn't wrong so A1 for service. I received the two crab cakes within 15 minutes of ordering and when I say they all full of flavor they definitely are. They have red and yellow bell peppers inside which gives a little bit of sweetness and the sauce on top adds the overall Melody of flavors. As far as crab cakes go in the city, this is one of the best in the prices right? It was sub $15 And very feeling

Yelp
During a Li'l vacay to NOLA, Pee Wee came highly recommended!! What a treat!!!! From the moment we entered, it felt like home! Our hostesses were incredibly patient, kind and offered menu selections. First, we ordered the jambalaya egg rolls. Flaky on the outside with a delightful jambalaya filling. Next up, we ordered a crab stuffed baked potato (which featured a catfish fillet, two crab cakes, and a creamy crab loaded sauce) and a crab and shrimp boil. The boil was seasoned to perfection and the crab and shrimp were full of flavor! If ever in @NewOrleans, this is one of those.....You gotta go visit!!

Yelp
First, let's start off with the food so it was a group trip. We tried the strawberry Hennessy wings. We also tried the crab leg platter. And lemon pepper chicken wing plate. We also tried the salmon plate. if I must say all of the food that we tried was delicious not one thing that I tried was bad. The servers were very friendly it and the scene scenery. It was normal daytime lighting.
google avatar

Yelp
The crab cakes are AMAZING! Full of crab with very little breading. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Wowzer!!! Uber driver recommended the place when dropped myself and friend off at a nearby hotel . I ordered via Uber eats once we got hungry and I tell you was the absolute best tasting food ! I had the seafood pasta and my friend ordered the seafood platter ! Both enjoyed our meals tremendously ! Fried fish was lightly coated and fried the pasta was tender the crab cake was amazing and I can't stand to eat Crabcakes ! Definitely a must visit and try if in the area!

Yelp
Peewee's is AMAZING! The menu is almost always overwhelming because there are sooo many options to choose from. We waited maybe 20 minutes if that which was a huge surprise since we were into for the Essence Festival. They were busy though so once we were seated it took a while for someone to come take our order. However, our server was very nice and suggested some great items. She let us know about all of the specials. The restaurant is much bigger than I thought it would be. Peewee's had the BEST crab cake I have ever had in my life! The deviled eggs were good, I was not sure at first about the crab cake ball on top but it added so much flavor. I had a seafood boil as well that was their summer special. I LOVED the sauce but it may be a bit much for someone who doesn't like spice (we weren't told that it had a kick. It was like a sweet and spicy sauce very flavorful and so good! My friends had stuffed potatoes and they really enjoyed their food. Everything was 10/10 and I can't wait to go back!

Janice R.

Yelp
The servings are large and the food is delicious. The seafood potato is delicious. The staff is very helpful and friendly.

Yelp
I ordered delivery through Uber Eats. The food was decent. It was plentiful as in you got a fair share for the price. It was seasoned. I wasn't a huge fan of the crawfish loaded fries. This just wasn't a good idea for delivery. The toppings should've been separated. The fish and shrimp were fried good and the pasta that came with it was also pretty good. Even the potato salad was even decent.
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
Food was amazing! PeeWee's has been saved in my Bucket List for our trip to NOLA. We finally made it and were not disappointed. Darnika explained all the dishes and we were able to make great choices. Can't wait for our next trip to New Orleans. My only regret was they didn't have sweet tea and only serve Pepsi products. But not a deal breaker!
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Great New Orleans food. Our waitress Dornika was friendly and helpful. Food a little pricey but worth it.

Yelp
I love pee wee's Im here now and the only reason I come is for Peewees. So sad I aborted my trip early and taxi I had act like he didnt know where it was??? So yea Im leaving once again SECOND time, and did not get a chance to get my Crabby Crab Pasta! Lil Weezyana Festival got everything sky high now, imagine when it's Super Bowl.

Yelp
The food was absolutely wonderful. The presentation was extremely appealing. We ordered shrimp poʻboy, crayfish toast, fried catfish with seafood stuffed baked potato, and Crabcakes. Dalisha provided outstanding customer service. She was extremely hospitable. The soulful Playlist made it easy to sit back and enjoy our family dinner.

Fred M.

Yelp
The crab cake was one of the best I've ever had!!!! The gumbo was good, but not as great as the crab cake IMO. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful for my first visit.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
They had a promotional deal one Uber Eats (buy 1, get 1). Ordered 2 gumbo, 2 chicken and sausage loaded fries, and 2 crawfish loaded fries). Opted to pick it up ourselves. It was very hot. The gumbo had good flavor, spicy, but didn't have much seafood in it (mainly chicken), The crawfish fries were just cheesy fries with very little crawfish, not worth it. My boyfriend liked the chicken and sausage fries. It was okay for the price, but we wouldn't go again.
google avatar

Yelp
Peewee's was amazing! Did not expect such great flavors to come from this small strip mall restaurant. We arrived late afternoon and the wait to be seated wasn't too bad for a Friday. Once seated we were waited on and informed of all of the yummy things they had to offer. I went with the crab boil which was the best I've ever had. Crab legs were boiled perfectly and the meat came out with no problems. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The shrimp had the heads on them but that didn't bother me. I was so stuffed by the time I finished. I am so glad we came here for dinner! Will definitely return on future visits to NO!

Erica M.

Yelp
Soooo gudt!!! The staff was kind and efficient, and I even got to see my Sunday Gameday!! Would definitely recommend; would definitely return!
google avatar

Yelp
Crab cakes, loaded seafood potato, pasta were the move. So good. One of those moments where I knew I needed to not eat anymore but decided to suffer because it was worth it. Po boy was solid too.

Yelp
Dalisha was my delightful waitress! She has great energy and southern hospitality. I will for sure be back! The food was amazing! I don't have a picture because I ate it all!!!

Riva L.

Yelp
The atmosphere was on point. Greeted at the door with smiles and delight. Service was phenomenal with our waitress, Dornika. She was very helpful with menu selections & options. Food presentation was amazing and the flavor was unforgettable! Definitely coming back again!
google avatar

Demarco S.

Yelp
Outstanding standing! Dornika went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. Food was great. We had the stuffed potatos.Highly recommend!"
google avatar

Holly D.

Yelp
Dornika was a fantastic waitress! The food was incredibly delicious! First time here but definitely not the last!! Great crab cakes! Everything was great! Everyone who passed us spoke to us. Great atmosphere. y'all gotta eat here!!

Monica B.

Yelp
Food was excellent and the staff was very inviting. I'm so grateful to the gentleman and his wife that assisted my son and I while trying to decide what to order. Come to find out they were both from Mississippi, and that took away a lot of previous anxiety regarding their food especially being that we learned about this place on TicTok and Facebook. Would I go back, YES. Would I order the foods we ordered, YES with some additions!!!
google avatar

Renzel E.

Yelp
Great food, I thoroughly enjoyed the baked potato and catfish with crab cake combo. Highly recommended

Jalia M.

Yelp
over hyped. the food was just not good and over priced as an out of towner i was excited and they definitely didn't meet my expectations. Nice customer service though.

Yelp
The food at Pee Wees was amazing. It was a lot of us and landing at Pee Wee's was not planned, but I'm so happy we visited. There wasn't a ton of parking, but luckily we arrived at a time where it wasn't super busy. My husband was in the hunt for a seafood stuffed potato while we were in NOLA and he found it here. He did nothing but speak highly of it. My crab legs and our crawfish came with this yummy garlic butter on it, and we enjoyed both thoroughly. Our server did an amazing job with serving our large party. All of our food came out in a timely manner, was fresh and reasonably priced. Inside its a little small, but the R&B playlist they had playing was EVERYTHING! I walked out with lots of new songs added to my playlist. I didn't get the crab cake, but I will next time!

Brittany B.

Yelp
Seafood loaded baked potato was EVERYTHING. My daughter had a catfish poboy and enjoyed it as well. Very good service. Will return to try other items for sure!

Shane B.

Yelp
Best food in new Orleans, excellent service. Fast, friendly and delicious. My favorite place to eat.

Yelp
Horrible customer service and as a result horrible food... I placed my order via phone and was told I had to pay full price over the phone(I thought nothing of it). I whipped out my card and proceeded to share my details with the cashier, I was told the food would be ready in 10-15 minutes which i thought was speedy service. I was 8 minutes from the restaurant so i decided to wait 15 minutes then head to the restaurant so that I could be sure my food was ready and had not been sitting for too long getting cold. As I arrive at the restaurant I see what I perceive to be my order sitting on the counter. I alert the staff to the fact I placed a phone order that paid for over the phone and what my name is. The staff walks up to what I think is my order quickly glances at the receipt and tells me the order is not mine and to have a seat... So I follow rhetorical instructions I had been given, I sit and wait 20 mins hoping for my name to be called which it never was... after I had the thought that it has been 40 minutes since I was told my food would be ready in 10-15 minutes I decided to reengage the staff let them know something is wrong. The other cashier walks up to food that had been sitting on the counter for the duration of my time in the restaurant and lets me know that food is indeed mine. I then voice my frustration tactfully that I had been sitting here infront of the entire staff for 20 minutes without anyone noticing that something was wrong and had to take matters into my own hands and ask the same questions multiple times to different staff members to finally get to the bottom of the dilemma. I also voiced my concern that since the food had been done for 40 minutes it is no longer in the condition I paid $45 dollars for it to be in. I was hit with a shrug and even blamed for receiving such poor customer service as if it was my fault for having poor communication when I stated very clearly upon arrival that I was there to pick up an order I paid for, what the order was, and what my name was and was told it was not ready and listen for my name to be called... As a result of this poor customer service my food was indeed cold and the fried fish was so soggy the batter wouldnt even stay on the fish at this point... I am a rationale person and things happen but to be in the service industry charging customers and exorbitant amount of money if a problem arises that is the fault of the establishment, said establishment should make and effort to make this right and foster a positive experience. My problem and reason for making this post is that the staff choose the opposite approach and blamed me the communicating customer for the entire mishap, shrugged me off and sent on my way with a subpar meal making this entire interaction an extremely expensive, time consuming, and ultimately negative experience.

Marnie R.

Yelp
Great place to go for food if you're wanting to get away from the touristy stuff! Our server, Tyschica, was super welcoming. I got the bacon, corn and shrimp pasta and it was delicious. There are two locations listed, The Peewee's crab cakes without the grab and go part in the title is the right address.
google avatar

Padmani R.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by a Lousiana native. This is a small restaurant in a strip mall. I ordered the sizzling chicken and it came with a crab cake. The chicken was sizzling and delicious but the real star of my plate was the crab cake! It was perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. The minute I had it, I told my husband I should've ordered the crab cake meal instead of the chicken because it was that good! My husband ordered the crab boil that came with shrimp, corn and sausage. He said it was really good as well. The food was affordable and delicious. This is a small place but the food was amazing. I will definitely visit this place again when back in New Orleans!
google avatar

Tonya S.

Yelp
I drive 2 hours for PeeWees, so, that can tell you how well i enjoy the food. ...the food. The staff is so-so. They always seem to be rushing you & not very fond of answering questions ( some items are MKP priced). Otherwise, I enjoy my food, I always get The Champs Pan & it's always on point. I always have lots of leftovers or lots to share. & like the Terminator say, "I'll Be Back". (No pics, ate too fast lol).

April G.

Yelp
Peewee's food was very tasty! I highly recommend and is the best food I've had in New Orleans.
google avatar

Dusty R.

Yelp
Went to New Orleans to visit family, and they put me on Pee Wees Crab Cakes. OMG.....this place is off the chain good. I ordered the fully stuffed potatoe, and to my surprise, this thing is massive and comes with crab meat, fried catfish, and all the toppings of a loaded baked potatoe and drizzled in an amazing remoulade sauce. The service was good and pretty quick to be so packed full of people. The restaurant itself is pretty normal and looks like a fast food joint. The best part about this place is the food, hands down. The menu is well put together, and the prices are extremely low considering the amount of food and flavor you get. Great place. I wish this restaurant made its way out to California. It would definitely do well in Los Angeles. Can't wait to go back. Thanks, Pee Wees, for a memorable meal.
google avatar

Tiffona S.

Yelp
On my trip to the NOLA, I created a list of places to eat based on reviews and tik tok recommendations. Peewees was one of them. Although I didn't get the item recommended (loaded fish baked potato) I got the crab cake deviled eggs. So bomb! I had to order my entree twice. First time i ordered a seafood stuffed pepper platter (I'm pescatarian) but it came with meat blended in. So make sure you ask if you have dietary restrictions. Then i placed another order but they brought me something else entirely. I had them take the incorrect order back and pack the correct one to go since everyone was done eating by the time my food came. I taste tested it before packing it and it was ok. They did give me 7% or something off for the inconvenience. Didn't like the Mac and cheese it's not baked. More like velveeta. Potato salad wasn't my cup of tea but I'm super picky about my potato salad and knew it was a 80% chance I wouldn't like it. crab cakes on the devil eggs were perfect but the one pictured with entree was soggy but burnt on top. ‍ Next time I'll try the potato as recommended. However i can vouch for those crab cake devil eggs. Scrumptious!

Kim K.

Yelp
I love there crab cakes they so delicious .The seafood stuff potatoe was very tasty and the fish and seafood is delicious not over seasoned very flavourful.
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
The name is not indicative of the size of the crab cakes, afraid to go because of the name. However, this little place puts out great tasting crab cakes: You really get a great crab flavor. It's a small, kinda hole in the wall place but worth going. The service is stand to order then sit for service. Go there for fresh great crab cakes, not to ambiance
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Omg crab cakes are PHENOMENAL! One of my favorite places in NOLA. A little out of the way but well worth the travel.
google avatar

Arisa G.

Yelp
The first meal we had on our vacation in New Orleans - decided to DoorDash since we were too tired from traveling. Delivery was timely. Fair pricing. Between me and my boyfriend, we split an entree and two side dishes that came out to ~$50. We ordered the Blackened Salmon entree w/ jambalaya rice + broccoli, Crawfish Bread, and Crab Cake on the side. Everything was seasoned well. Only taking away a star because the bread was unfortunately saggy - tasted good but would've tasted better if it had more crisp to it. Perhaps they should wrap these in foil instead for deliveries so it doesn't lose its freshness.
google avatar

Chassidy S.

Yelp
This place is okay and pretty expensive. I wanted to order one of their Hennessy cocktails, but they were out of Hennessy. I wanted to order the chargrilled oysters, but they were out of oysters. Eventually, I found something on their menu that they had and I wanted. I ordered the shrimp box. They actually ran my food to the wrong table, and they had to take the plate back from the wrong table and remake it. So, it took longer than normal to get my food. The overall atmosphere is okay. The service is okay. The food was delicious and expensive.

Yelp
Finally I made it to PeeWee's!! Such a nice staff and owner. Immediately greeted me when I came in the door. This urban seafood joint was filled with great people and my favorite R&B tunes. I discovered they have $5 bites on Wednesday around lunch time to 5pm. I was able to order the boudin balls, which were piping hot, delicious, and filling. I wish there was a sauce to compliment them but also I'm not complaining at all. I also ordered the Fried Shrimp Deviled Eggs, now look, if you don't like seafood then this ain't for you. But I loved them, the shrimp was seasoned really well, they could have been a little crispier. The filling was so smooth and creamy and delicious, I barely made it home with all three. I was able to save one to eat at home, lol. And if you are wondering, the shock factor for me was that they were warm instead of a cold traditional deviled egg. I also ordered the crawfish fries. When I tell you I could eat those once a week. I'm craving them now just typing this review. The hot thick cut fries were drowning in a creamy, cheesy sauce, topped with seasoned crawfish and green onion. With so little ingredients to the eye, it was bursting with flavor. Some might want their fries crispier and not a little soft like mine, but I am not mad at all about my visit. It took a little while to come out because it's made fresh to order, but I heard so many of my favorite songs playing on the inside, I did not mind the wait. They also have such a sweet girl taking orders at the counter, she really made my to go order go perfect. So kind and professional. I can't wait to come back or even go for lunch. (Sorry I didn't take any pictures, after I checked in, but next time I will order enough to show you a variety of their menu) P.s...Whenever you see their food truck, just stop and give them a try!!! With such a large menu, I'm sure you'll find something you like. I know I did.

Yelp
Finally made it to Peewee for his famous crab cakes. I ordered the crab cake appetizer with a side salad. Both were excellent. The crab cake is huge and delicious, dont fool with any of the sauces just get the crab cake straight up. The salad was also very good. The prices are a little expensive and the service is not great to say the least, I mean you are eating with plastic knives and forks but paying high end restaurant prices.

Shannon C.

Yelp
The food was great. Our server Dornika was excellent. Will definetly be back next year when I'm in New Orleans.
google avatar

Lynn L.

Yelp
Food is very good. I live in the neighborhood, so I am getting pretty familiar with the menu. The crab cakes plate was totally good. I love the pontchartrain soft shell crab appetizers. The 3 taco appetizer are so filling as well. Someone told me the stuffed pepper platte is a must. I will send a review on it Enough about the food, the place itself is always clean. Try to get there before 11:30 because there is always a crowded for lunch. People order a lot of food and eat and drink fora minute. The staff is really very friendly even though it can be hectic in there. The food is worth the wait

Yelp
The food is amazing and so flavorful. I ordered the stuffed shrimp with seafood rice and asparagus. Oh my goodness the rice is so yummy. Surprisingly spicy with a slight hint of sweetness. The asparagus, I think was slightly fried then topped with Cajun seasoning. Now baby, let me tell you about the stuffed shrimp. The stuffing was filled with blue crab. Not lump meat but crab and little filler. They were delicious. The worst part was eating with a plastic fork. Food this good should be eaten with real flatware. Ok enough of my plate. My mom ordered the oyster Po'boy and added fried shrimp with fries. I have to say it was good as well. My only complaint would be that the temperature of the food was on the colder side and I wish it were piping hot but with that being said I still give them a 5star because the flavor was amazing. Will return for sure. I'm saving the best for last, our server Sugga was so kind and helpful.

Yelp
stuffed chicken was horrible and not as described. Picture of lamb chops show 4 but you only get 3.

Yelp
Ok so this place was unassuming but AMAZING! Service was top notch from Brandi or "B"! She was so sweet and made sure to give that down home feel! The food was FIRE! We had crawfish, one of those pans with the crab legs, gumbo, and yakkamein! Everything was great! I can't wait to come back to town.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVED IT! The food was amazing. We came in on a Sunday right in time for brunch and got seated quickly. When I say everything was good I mean it. I had the loaded Crab Cake Potato, gumbo, and corn chowder. All AMAZING and packed full of flavor and love. I also got to try the BBQ shrimp (comes with head on and wasn't my favorite but still good) and the deviled eggs. BEST deviled eggs I have ever had. They definitely made me a fan with that one. My waitress was sweet and a great band came in (which was a bit much because the location is small but was still entertaining). I will definitely be back if not for anything but those amazing crab cake deviled eggs!! Definitely worth it and affordable.
