"Gran Tivoli is an Italian spot in Nolita that’s a good place to meet someone for drinks and small plates after work. But if you’re not hungry, or you’re meeting up a bit later in the night, walk past the long bar to the staircase at the back of the restaurant that leads down to Peppi’s Cellar. This cocktail bar feels like a jazz club from a time when jazz clubs were just called bars, and along with bar seating, the dark, low-ceilinged space also has tables and a few booths that work for big groups." - Matt Tervooren

"In order to get to Peppi’s Cellar, you have to enter a restaurant called Gran Tivoli, go all the way to the back, and walk down a winding staircase. At the end of those stairs, you’ll find a big, carpeted room resembling a medieval wine cellar that was converted into a jazz club. It doesn’t get too crowded down there, which makes this a great spot to share a little table with one or two other people." - Bryan Kim

"Peppi’s Cellar is a cocktail bar hidden beneath an Italian restaurant (that isn’t open yet) in Nolita. It’s a big space with brick walls and carpeted floors, and it feels kind of like a cross between an enormous wine cellar and a comedy club from the 1950s. It’s a good spot for a relatively low-key drink with a date, some clients, or a couple of friends who appreciate great cocktails and/or copious amounts of whiskey. Plus, at the moment, not a lot of people know about it." - Bryan Kim

We went to Peppi's Cellar for a special Craigellachie whisky tasting. It's a nice ambiently-lit place with a spectacular whisky collection. The atmosphere WANTS to be chill, but the patrons are those fake-bourgeoise NYC transplants that lifelong New Yorkers like myself and my boyfriend hate... keep that in mind. Anyways, there was a special cocktail menu for the event so we ordered one of each drink (one pineapple, one apple); the pineapple one was the winner. The tasting happened at the very back of the cellar where we sat with another couple to taste Craigellachie 13 and 17 with our very enthusiastic host; the 17 was really good! We then moved to a curtained section where we sat with the same couple plus another couple to be introduced to Craigellachie 51 by a new and very informed hostess. After the tasting (really good!!), we got to keep our dram, got a really cute gift bag (with a Craigellachie 13 inside!!), and a token for another of the specialty cocktails. We both opted for the pineapple one and it was even better the second time around. All around a good night and would definitely go back again to explore their collection of whisky.

The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating, the food is great, excellent bar service, and the basement vibes are low key and chill. One of my favorite places to hang out in the city.

What is it good for? When you're seeking a warm & friendly neighborhood bar vibe, but want to drink more than sub-par house red wine or beer on tap. The details: Came after work on a Friday with one friend and posted up at the bar. Excellent selection of wine, huge liquor selection, and a few unique cocktails. Our group grew to 5 as the evening went on, and there was plenty of space both at tables and the bar (which spans the whole space). The room is dimly lit, but not dark, and the staff was super friendly / helpful in making selections.

I love the decor in this subterranean spot, and I was surprised to find open tables and seats at the bar at 9 on a Saturday night. Pleasantly crowded but not packed. There are large, cozy tables that are set into the side wall, which would be perfect for an intimate night with friends. I was very disappointed by the cocktails- they were $16 and consistently not good. No one I spoke to enjoyed theirs; most people had switched to beer or wine. Pricing is completely transparent; bottles behind the bar all have tags showing the cost per glass. The major drawback for me was the music: it was all over the place and by the time I left around midnight they were playing 50s sock hop - LOUD. Way too loud for not good music. People were left shouting at each other which broke the lounge-y atmosphere. Cute spot, so go early, have a glass of wine, and head somewhere else before the bad music gets to its peak.

Love this place! Get in before 9pm to get a booth and you can relax and drink with your friends in what feels like a private room. There's quality live Jazz , great food and an excellent, really excellent range of Scotch. COME ON WEDNESDAY'S for Whiskey Wednesday!

Visited this place twice this weekend. It has a relaxed atmopshere and ambiance while at the same time having some upscale elements. My husband tells me that their scotch and whiskey selection is notable, and I enjoyed prosecco and beer on the nights I came in. The bar snacks are good well.

Someone once said that all the great bars are hard to find. We stumbled upon this one without even looking. After passing through the unassuming entrance and down a candle lit staircase we found ourselves having one of the best nights during our most recent NYC trip. Set in low lit cavern like environment the bar has a huge selection of spirits and an extensive cocktail menu. Whilst perching at the bar we were treated to some seriously good cocktails presented by one of the most knowledgeable barman i've ever met. My exploration with rye based drinks were well worth the hangover. Will be back soon.
