Yelp
Peridot is a Vietnamese-inspired restaurant right next to Pacific Rim downtown. I've been to Peridot several times since it's opened, and I've loved every visit! They're always pretty busy and reservations go quick, but my friend and I were able to get a seat at the bar at 6pm on a Thursday night without a reservation.
There's seating on the first floor as well as the upstairs area. It's quite dark inside, but it's very well-decorated. The art pieces on the ceiling upstairs were very pretty! I really liked the overall atmosphere. However, they often have loud music playing and the tables are very close together, so it can be a little difficult to hold conversations.
The servers are all great and super attentive! They typically recommended that we order a few small plates and one large plate to share. The service was usually pretty quick; the only time I had to wait for food was when I went during Restaurant Week. And our plates were cleared as soon as we finished!
Green Papaya Salad ($12) - Similar to Thai papaya salad, but with more pronounced Vietnamese flavors. The menu says there's a spicy lime dressing, and I tasted the citrus but no heat. This is a brighter, lighter dish that complements the meaty dishes well.
Banh Mi Bruschetta ($14) - I wish this had an even number of bruschetta since it's difficult to split 3 pieces. The flavor is authentic though, and it's one of my favorite small plates!
Roasted Cauliflower ($13) - This is my least favorite dish of the small plates I've tried. It's not bad, but the portion is small for the price, and the dish is not super memorable. The flavors are more subdued compared to the other menu options.
Grilled Oysters ($21) - Another favorite on the small plates menu! This dish had great nước chấm flavor. Highly recommend!
Seared Scallops ($16) - The scallops are my favorite on the small plates menu! They were perfectly seared, buttery, and tender. I only wish there were more than two for the price.
Fried Chicken Wings ($14) - I was very excited to try these, but the lack of fish sauce flavor was disappointing. They were still good (sticky, slightly sweet), but a different flavor than I was expecting.
Pork Spareribs ($17) - The spareribs were amazing! They were incredibly tender and savory. The pickled veggies were delicious and complemented the meat well.
Steamed Clams and Mussels ($23) - The flavors were good, but it's not super filling. The dish comes with a few slices of baguette to soak up the light and briney broth.
Crab Fried Rice ($21) - Super flavorful and filling with lots of crab! I highly recommend this if you're unsure what to order. Not a lot of heat here either, but still very good.
Vegetable Curry Stew ($24) - This is a great vegetarian dish! The stew is delicious and tastes very authentic to traditional Vietnamese curries. It's a warm, fragrant, mild curry that leans sweet-- similar to Vietnamese cà ri gà (chicken curry).
Pork Belly ($34) - The portion looked small on their very large plate, but there are so many pieces of pork belly. It's tender with lots of umami flavor from the black garlic puree. The soy-tamarind gel adds some sweetness and the herbs brighten up the dish.
Lime-Ginger Flan - The flan was quite dense, but I still really enjoyed it. I tasted the citrus and ginger, and the star anise crunchy topping added a nice textural contrast.
On the cocktail menu, I've had: The Nod, Fall High Ball, and Ha Long Bay. All of their cocktails are so interesting, and we had a lot of recommendations. My favorite so far is The Nod (refreshing and light)!
Some dishes are smaller than anticipated and a few are overpriced for what they are, so be prepared for a hefty bill. Regardless, Peridot has quickly become one of my most favorite spots in Ann Arbor, and I'm excited to try out the rest of the menu!
