Phil's Icehouse - Review - Allandale - Austin - The Infatuation

"Phil’s Icehouse feels less like a place you go to get a quick burger and more like a place you visit to spend time with your family. There’s a dedicated play area (for kids), plenty of draft beer (for adults), and colorful tables sprinkled all around (for everyone). All of the burgers here come with fries by default, but you can get one à la carte and save a couple of quarters. The burgers come on fluffy, square buns. They're thick, sweet, and nicely toasted, though the fact that they're made from sourdough isn’t immediately apparent. The patty is well seasoned, and there are enough variations—mostly named after Austin neighborhoods—to keep things fresh on repeat visits." - Nicolai McCrary

And at Austin sweets chain Amy’s, order up your favorite flavor combination (Mexican Vanilla with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup crush’ns). Phil‘s is a local Austin hamburger place that paired up with Ami’s long time ago. They have several different versions of burger, named after Austin neighborhoods or ZIP Codes. They also have a pretty good hot dog, but my favorite deal is the mini burgers where you can get two or three to mix and match them to get different types. They have normal fries and sweet potato fries, and both are excellent. There is a shared indoor dining space with Amy‘s and another outdoor space that has lots of playground stuff for kids to play on.

Delicious Hamburgers and Great flavor at Phil’s Ice House! I had an amazing experience at Phil’s Ice House! The hamburgers were absolutely delicious — juicy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. The bun was fresh, and the toppings were generous and well-balanced. You can really taste the quality in every bite. The atmosphere was fun and family-friendly, and the staff was kind and attentive. Whether you’re a burger lover or just looking for a great local spot, I highly recommend stopping by. Phil’s never disappoints!

Google
On the way to whataburger we found Phil's icehouse we had never tried it before my wife and I decided to try !!!!!!! Well well well we start with the bad attitude of the cashiers. We visited on 7-10-2025 in the afternoon the portions of fries a small portion the menu said that my hamburger came with avocado 🥑 they gave me guacamole the same small portion less than a teaspoon the soda a plastic glass and small glass we definitely had to go to whataburger I hope the owner improves things here!!!!! NOW

Google
The food is so darn good here! The chicken sandwich I had was one of the best I’ve had in a long time and the sweet potato fries are delicious. My husband had a traditional burger and he also enjoyed it a lot. This place has become our new favorite burger joint.

Google
Haven’t been here in awhile, I had an Allandale (aka cheeseburger). Patty had great flavor, excellent bun, a fresh vegs. Fries were perfect, and not those shoelace ones. Very relaxing inside….

Google
Ordered thru Uber! I could’ve sworn they used to have the skinny crunchy fries but the fries, both sweet potato and regular were soggy :( My burger was also a bit discombobulated haha but still one of my favorite burger spots. I hope they can make delivery orders crunchier!

Google
This Phil’s is 10x better than the one on 183. Burgers are fresh and delicious and my kids love the playground. Can’t go wrong here for a family friendly place to grab lunch or dinner.

Google
Not what it once was. Haven't had a burger from Phil's in at least 10 years. The Burnet location needs some TLC. I ordered a Crestview, it was a sad burger at best. The grill needs to be cleaned, or the cook needs to adjust heat. Guessing flare-up because the meat was disgustingly bitter and dry as sand. There literally were 3 dime size pieces of chili masked with that unmelted cheddar and thick cut onion. The lobby needed to be cleaned, every table could have used a wipe down as well. My buddy ordered the phil-a-buster, he said the meat was bitter and they ( patties) were overcooked. He did say the bacon at least attempts to mask the taste. At $10-20 there are much better options around this location.

Yelp
Delicious burgers with consistent yummy quality! Highly recommend! Next time I'll take pictures before devouring!

Yelp
As you can see, phone did not eat first. I had to take a bit of my slider before I remembered to take a pic. I've been here a few times and it has gotten better. The buns are like pillows and have a slight sweetness to them which is ideal. These are some solid burgers in town that come with either sweet potato or regular fries(or a mix). They have outdoor seating here and share it with the neighboring Amy's ice cream if you're considering bringing your dog. Lastly, staff treated us kindly and the place had a decent vibe to it!

Yelp
I took my daughter, who is extremely lactose intolerant (I'm talking a bowel holocaust and an excrement act of war), to your fine establishment and we ordered a burger with NO cheese. We made it very very clear. Upon receiving our burger we drove the long journey home and arrived 30 minutes later. She took a large hungry bite into the burger and when the cheesy agony touched her taste buds she peeled back the bun in dismay. Only minutes later, we could hear her stomach scream like the souls of the damned and her anus unclench to make a nose I've only ever heard a train make. Unfortunately the horrors don't stop there as even later in the day when we walked into her bathroom, I saw the worst thing to happen in a restroom since Elvis Presley. The Pernicious cheesy burger had led to a diarrhea bomb the likes which only the Japanese can attest to.

Luna S.

Yelp
My daughter is super super lactose intolerant and cannot have cheese!! Every time we go we make very sure not to put cheese and every time they do. Today, they made our burger- put cheese, I went all the way home, noticed, went back, and they remade it WITH CHEESE AGAIN. Get your shit together, Phil!

Yelp
I'm often in a mood for burgers and decided to give Phil's a try based on some of the other reviews on Yelp. The restaurant is in an industrial looking building with a clean and bright interior. The menu has quite the variety of burgers and other sandwiches. I settled on the Jollyville Burger, with bacon, fried egg, and cheese surrounded by two slices of Texas toast. I opted to try out the fried green beans and I have to say that I was very impressed with how tasty they were. Hot and crisp and not at all greasy, they were a big highlight of the meal. The burger was cooked as I liked (medium rare) although the egg was a bit overdone (I like the yolk to ooze out). The bar here has a wide selection of craft beers so you won't go thirsty at all. I just wish they would bring back the 512 Pecan Porter. Service is friendly and attentive. Recommended.

Yelp
Darn! I really love Phil's Icehouse, however the last two online takeaway orders I've done have really disappointed me. They wrap the burgers in paper, plus additional wrap, and I think when they wrap it, the burger is so warm that it melts INTO the paper. Both takeaway orders I've done, both the top and bottom of the burger bun sticks to the paper and I end up having to eat the insides on a plate with a fork basically. I think something like foil would be better. Such a drag! The solution to this is don't get your Phil's on takeaway and just eat it there. Otherwise, the paper will be eating half your meal for you.
google avatar

Lena H.

Yelp
Burgers are always consistent when I grab lunch. The Allendale burger is always my go too w/ half sweet potatoes fries and half regular fries. Everything is always cooked fresh and hot.

Yelp
Been here a few times now because I really want to like this place. There's a playscape in the back along with ice cream so it makes it a really convenient place to bring the kiddo. But it's just not doing it for me. To start with the positives - I really really like the meat here. I find it to be of good quality and I like the taste a lot when eaten right away*. The regular fries are approved by the kiddo. The negatives - none of us like the bread, it's just not doing it for us. All the various burgers we have tried has all been very mediocre is flavor. Whether it's the jalapeno cheese bun, the chilli, the seasonings, every variation has been bland. The burgers are pretty pricey for what you get. The menu is just super confusing. Last time our fries came out as sweet potato fries. I guess you have to clarify regular fries or something? Anyway, I do not like sweet potato fries at all. The meat dries up really fast and gets hard if not eaten really quickly. This makes it hard for the kiddo to eat. So yea, I really wish the burgers were better tasting and less pricey cuz the location and playscape is really great but after 4 visits, I think this is just not the place for us.

Yelp
I don't do reviews and such BUT YES those are some tasty F'n burgers. I prefer the mini trio - Crestview, Travis Heights, and ..... in my opinion a cheese burger without mustardPut mayonnaise NO Kool Whip trick. I love PHIL's! Period

Yelp
I have always been a Phils fan. The veggie burger- best in town. Tonight- new one is awful, thin, cheap and bad flavor. Is it from a grocery store? Please change back!!!

Jackie P.

Yelp
Love their burgers, and OMG their sweet potato fries are Phil's has def become one of my top 10 places to eat in Austin
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
Phil's is our longtime local burger joint and got us through the pandemic haha. Their burgers are always well made and the sweetness of their thick pillowy hamburger buns really help to make the burger what it is. It's very predictable and doesn't disappoint. We typicallly get the Rosedale, the Violet Crown, or the 78750. You get the choice of regular fries and/or sweet potato fries--very rarely are they soggy but typically seasoned well with a great crisp. Their food is a geeat value for the price. Highly recommend
google avatar

Tracey Z.

Yelp
WOW! I'm typically not a burger person but THIS burger is incredible! I could rave about it for days. I got the Veggie Burger patty and built my own burger - I love the customizability of this option as I'm a picky eater. The patty tasted oniony and chickpea-y and was heart and light. The bun, I got the sourdough, really sold me on this burger - It was slightly sweet but very moist and airy and absolutely incredible. Also I love that you have the option to get mixed fries as a side - I got a mix of regular and sweet potato - but fries were hot and crispy yet soft in the middle. Plus the staff are so nice and the seating, both indoor and outdoor, are plentiful and fun. Definitely would recommend to anyone!!

Yelp
I ordered the "78704" burger with a side of fries. The burger was very flavorful, and the fries were good as well.

UN O.

Yelp
I haven't eaten here in about 10 years, so I stopped in. The Violet Crown is still amazing, with tangy bleu cheese offset with a slightly sweet jalapeño bun. The sweet potato fries are the best I've had, crispy and delicious. I won't wait long to come back this time!

Yelp
Where to start with this place. It's a hole in the wall with potential for some amazing burgers and fries. So many options available painted in big fun letters on the wall. My husband and I ordered our food and while ordering the server took her hat off and hit a fly on the counter and killed it, put her hat back on and threw the fly away with a napkin. Ok - flies are gross - nice hit, good for her. We walk into the dining area and my husband sits down and the table and chairs he picks are disgusting. So I say let's take another one. I wanted to vomit. The amount of food and dirt in the cracks of the bench are DISGUSTING. I wipe the table enough so when our food comes we aren't eating on a filthy table. My burger is ok, probably a little better than McDonalds but hard to tell because of the amount of toppings on it which I picked so I don't mind. My husband has a trio and can't even eat a single one. He says they are absolutely gross and can't eat them. As I'm eating and looking around I see nothing but filth and lose my appetite and we leave. This place needs a complete overhaul cleaning. I cannot imagine how the score posted here is accurate. There is no way they would pass a health code now. Please clean your place up - it's pretty terrible.

Yelp
You must come here! The onion rings are thin and well seasoned. The BLT had bacon exploding out of it and tons of fresh vegetables.  The bread was toasted, with a wonderful buttery flavor--and I found the butter ended up on my hands! The cheeseburger was large with a soft bun, served with the cheese nicely melted.   Something that was a nice surprise is that they serve Maine Root Soda here, which is a terrific change from the mainstream.

Yelp
Horrible service owner yelled at me and my 3 month old baby and called us many uncooth slurs.

Chan M.

Yelp
Got the grilled cheese (+ avocado) & sweet potato fries to go. Delicious but massive. Wish they would cut the sandwich in half. Phil's is also great -- and reliable! Plus, the cashier has been there for years so they must be doing something right!
google avatar

Shauna S.

Yelp
Delicious and oh so fresh. That bread though... we had fantastic customer service and tore up our lunch. I was with a four year old that got a grilled cheese. She said it was cheesy and "dewicous"... lol.. she also added it was super yum. So yeah.. I'm the dumb nut for not coming here sooner!
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Their burgers are awesome. My friends brought some back, and their 78704 is delicious. I love that the Hawaiian rolls bring some sweetness to the burger, the the avocado and jalapeños bring the kick and creaminess you need to the patty and cheese. The chipotle mayo and sweet potato fry combination is wonderful. The burger is definitely pretty greasy so this couldn't be an every day meal, but I'm pretty impressed by how good it is. I'm not normally a burger girl either, but I would come here over many other burger establishments in Austin.
google avatar

Melynda S.

Yelp
Maybe the best burger I've had in Austin!! 10/10 recommend the Allandale Burger - cheddar cheese, sliced onions, sliced tomato, lettuce, pickles, mayo and mustard on a toasted sourdough bun. You can get half regular and half sweet potato fries on the side for no extra charge - gotta love that! And the fries are incredible! It is such a filling meal, and only $9 - can't beat that! Indoor and outdoor seating, great food, you have to check it out!!
google avatar

Jevin H.

Yelp
One of the best burger spots in Austin in my opinion. The spot is very diner-like, but just a small counter where you can order your food and an adjacent room where you can sit and eat. Every burger I've gotten here was really good, and I'd recommend them all. The sampler is also a good place to start if you aren't sure of which one you want. Pricing is great and service is as well. Only complaint I could have is that I wish they would open till later, so I could come here late night haha.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
Don't ya hate it when you're at the restaurant, see a few items you like, and can't decide which to ultimately go with? Me too. At Phil's Icehouse, you don't have to worry about that if you are unsure as to which hamburger you want to order as they have a Mini Burger Sampler Basket which comes with 3 slider-sized burgers and a side of regular and/or sweet potato fries for $10.45. The 3 flavors I got were: - The "78704": burger topped with Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeños, onions, avocado, and chipotle mayo - The Rosedale Burger: cheddar mesquite burger topped with onions, pickles, cheddar cheese, and sweet mesquite BBQ sauce - The Crestview Burger: a chili cheeseburger topped with onions and mustard That's probably the 3 burgers I would suggest to anyone because they're all different in their main flavor (spicy/refreshing vs. sweet/tangy vs. rich/savory) and they're delicious. The sourdough buns are amazing as well as they're very soft. Great price and the food came out fast as well. No complaints whatsoever. I give them a 4.5/5 for being amazing, y'all gotta add this spot to your list!
google avatar

Gurpreet L.

Yelp
This place is GREAT! All of the burgers can be made vegetarian with a few substitutions which is a huge bonus for me. Indecisive folks rejoice because you can get half regular fries and half sweet potato fries. You'll never have to choose again, I ordered the spicy jalapeno burger and it was everything I needed and more. The veggie patty wasn't anything to write home about but the way it tasted with all the other ingredients was delicious. The buns are incredibly soft and tasted slightly sweet like a Hawaiian Roll. The ambiance is super casual and retro which was just the vibe I was looking for. I home to come back soon!

Sally G.

Yelp
Great service and great food, an Austin staple! I've been coming here for years and can't recommend it enough. The playground is also great for kids.

Jessica A.

Yelp
Phil's has been a family favorite for 15+ years! The burgers are amazing! The atmosphere is perfect for families! The service is always amazing! They always take care of us and the few times we've had issues they have been resolved quickly and graciously!

Henry S.

Yelp
incredible service! the burger is huge and they have a nice kids playground. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Stacey R.

Yelp
My burger was delicious. The onion rings were great and the ranch was good too! I'm here for the playground which made the experience top notch.

Mark P.

Yelp
My 12-year-old daughter and her friends came here to hang out after school actually at Amy's ice cream and the lady Phil's icehouse complained about them being on the playground even though they are 12 years old and that is what the sign says 12 years old and under. She said there was families that left because of groups of kids like this, but they are paying customers at Amy's ice cream. Even though they offered free water to anyone, they told my daughter and her friends that they were not allowed in the establishment. We probably will not be hanging out at either of these establishments from this point On. Great job Phil's icehouse.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Delicious food, great family vibe. Nothing better than coming here for some burgers before going nextdoor for a couple scoops of ice cream.
google avatar

Madeline A R.

Yelp
YUM!! This place has the best burgers and fries omg. The bun was a soft little cloud. They offered mixed fries. MIXED. SO YOU DONT HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN SWEET POTATOES AND NORMAL POTATOES. Consider this a love letter to Phil's. Definitely worth all the hype.

J C.

Yelp
My new favorite burger!!! Drove about an hour one way. They have the best buns and literally every burger I've had from them has been amazing!
google avatar

Valerie B.

Yelp
Great place. Several of the burgers sounded good, so we both went with mini burgers so we could try different things. I love that they have that option! My favorite was the Rosedale. I love a good BBQ and cheddar burger. The 78756 was also good, but I meant to order the 78750. I guess I'll have to go back! On the sides, we had the fries, onion rings, and sweet potato fries. The onion rings were the stand out. They are think and the batter was great. We also liked the fries. Well salted. The sweet potato fries were average. Great outside seating and very dog friendly. The staff noticed our dog and brought out a water bowl. So nice! Online ordering was easy and the food was ready quickly.

Christy B.

Yelp
I usually love this restaurant, but it has become overrun with middle schoolers who scream obscenities, fight with food, and run on the tables. My family, along with other families, hurriedly left today when it got dangerous. We will not return until this issue is resolved.

Angel M.

Yelp
Very disappointed in this place I have always loved the food and have never been kicked out prior to a place closing to stay they are going to clean and had just order food at 9:30. They literally pushed everyone out of the dinning area prior to closing. I brought new folks to try the place and that was a terrible experience. I used to work in the restaurant business and waited tables we did not kick people out prior to the closing time. We understood if folks showed up late and yes it sucks at times but we allow them time to finish there food. But we were literally told we had 10 minutes to eat our food and get out. The manager on duty with pink/red hair also claimed it was Amy's that kicked us out however Amy's closes at 11:30!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
We love all of the burgers and the buns are delicious! Slightly sweet and really soft. They playground is great for kids to play before and after the meal. A great spot for adults to enjoy a beer while kids are entertained.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
I've ordered from Phil's through Uber Eats. I've gotten the Phil-a-Buster with a side of onion rings. The burger was amazing. Thick and juicy patties with just the right amount of toppings, I was suitably impressed. I'll probably be stopping by in person to get a burger hot off the grill as I assume that would be incredible. The onion rings were also very good. Hot and just the right size. I'm looking forward to trying some of their other burger offerings, but the Phil-a-Buster was A-1!
google avatar

Kaitlin O.

Yelp
This is one of my friend's favorite burger places in Austin. I thought that the burgers were good too and I like the mini sampler basket option so that you can try multiple burgers since they have such a wide variety. I don't remember what I ordered besides that 2 of them had numbers in the name. Expect to leave feeling pretty heavy! Overall, good burgers, good variety, and good value.
google avatar

Asad E.

Yelp
A delicate mix of aromas wafts over you as you walk in: creamy ice cream, latrines (the bathrooms are kinda close to the tables), and burgers. While the visual appeal leaves much to be desired (there might've actually been a hole in the wall), the burgers are surprisingly bomb. Try the 3 slider sampler: get the burgers titled after zip codes, and ask for mixed fries (sweet potato and regular). Anyway, if you're looking for motivation to hit the gym, definitely stop by here because Amy's ice creams is right next door and you will eat 3 days worth of calories combining the burger, fries, and ice cream. The bloat is real y'all. Also I keep forgetting to take pictures of my food, but the burgers look better than most fast casual burgers, and punch above their weight class in terms of taste.
google avatar

Kaysha J.

Yelp
I just brought a turkey burger and a grilled foot long hot dog with the chili. I was very disappointed with the food, both tasted disgusting and I threw the food in the trash. Its safe to say I won't be back to this restaurant. It's not it!

Cameron M.

Yelp
Awesome burger awesome service ,quick too. I will absolutely come back to Phils icehouse after having this delicious Rosedale burger on a delicious sourdough bun! For a burger, this big, juicy and delicious at $11 out the door. You can't beat it.
google avatar

D k.

Yelp
It's 5 stars for what it is... a burger spot. Nothing fancy but good casual food. The burger is probably a pre-made patty but perfectly cooked where the outside is a little charred and the middle isn't dry. The bun is called sourdough roll but it's really not sourdough at all ‍ I would say it's more a broche since it's more sweet than sour, but it's really soft and works well to hold the burger and toppings. And Fries both regular and sweet potato are on point! They serve beer and wine (sometimes) and of course there's a playground. They share a patio with Amy's ice cream and that lends for a perfect night out with the kids.
google avatar

Angel S.

Yelp
Burgers, Dogs, Fish Sandwiches, Shakes, Ice Cream, Beers, Photo Booth....and a Playground! This place is set up for success and it delivers. Quality of ingredients is high, prices are average and cook time was fast. I am not a fan of their Buns though. Buns are way too big and causes ratio for a good sandwich to be lost. Atmosphere is great for families and anyone just wanting to enjoy an old fashioned meal. The food itself is pretty damn good. Mixed fries are the way to go and their soda machine has natural soda, score. Staff could have been a bit more engaged but it's cool. It's a burger joint and it's meant to be super causal. I just think if there's 4 people at a register and a guest approaches, they should be greeted by at least one employee. But again, all good.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
A friend was getting a burger here so I decided to join. Hadn't heard of the place before that. They have a lot of great sounding burgers and things. It's kind of cool how they name all there food based on the Austin area. Reading the menu, I had a very hard time deciding which to get. I got one with a zip code. 78704? It was what most places would probably label a California style since it had avocado. It was a darn good burger! I love their jalapeño cheese bun. Their fries are perfect. The sweet potato fries are good, a hair overcooked in my opinion and I'm honestly not the biggest fan of sweet potato fries (too sweet). I'd go so far as to say they are one of my favorite burgers in Austin. I will unquestionably return for more burgers.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Austin has much better burgers to offer than Phil's. I thought that people only came here so that they can let their children play at the play space. Not for the food. The fries are soggy and the burgers are mediocre at best. The yam fries were soggy as well. Maybe Phil's has changed ever since I went many years ago, but I still think Phil's is on par with McDonald burgers. At least McDonald's has a better, larger play space that has cushions on the floor in case your child falls. The parents are definitely at Phil's so that they don't have to entertain their kids while they talk to their friends. The table next to us neglected to pay attention to their three(?) year-old son so much that he stripped and just ran around the play space for the rest of the customers sitting outside to see his baby genitals flopping around. By the time my group left, the mother and father still haven't realized that their son was butt naked. Other than that, Phil's does not seem to be busy nor should parking be problematic. The busiest time is during lunch and late morning.

Yelp
Nice people, beautiful building, decent burgers. I love the onion rings and the Phil-uh-buster.

Jake J.

Yelp
Best burgers in town! Love this place. And it's right next door to Amy's Ice Cream. You can't beat that!

Adam M.

Yelp
For a beloved Austin institution the manager of this location is a true embarrassment to Amy's. I've never been spoke to in such a nasty way. On top of that the food was both ice cold or super hot. Overall a terrible lunch at what is usually a great location.
