San Francisco’s Sam Wo Restaurant in Chinatown Is For Sale | Eater SF

"A local Vietnamese mini-chain, Pho Ha Noi became the target of a viral Reddit thread after a customer posted a receipt and complained about an 18 percent service charge 'for parties of 1 or larger'; owner Helen Nguyen said she found the post upsetting and noted that many restaurants apply similar 20–25 percent charges, while the episode raised questions about where such service fees actually go." - Dianne de Guzman

Only good thing was the meat was seasoned right. Other than that, the noodles were soggy in my beef stew. Service sucks. They welcome you but then forgot my drink and I had asked twice, asked for napkins never got it, then they made a big deal about the menu being under the soup bowl. It was laminated and indestructible. We had planned to order more but changed our minds. The worst part is they force a 18% service gratuity. We have eaten at pho spots that are way better in flavor and cost. I was looking forward to writing something nicer but it just wanted there for me here. They should rename this place Pho Hell Nah.

Google
The beef rib in the beef rib pho was unreal, absolutely amazing. Perfect texture, tender and juicy but not so soft that there is no texture. It is also perfectly flavored, delicious and not overpowering on its own but also flavorful enough to carry the beefiness though a mouthful of light broth and noodles. The rib is the star of the show here and it really shows. Would highly recommend

Google
The pho here tasted pretty good, and the wait wasn't too long either. The meat was nice and tender and the broth was good. We also got some egg rolls that were nice and crunchy.

Google
This was my first time coming here, and it was very disappointing. The service felt cold and rushed. We asked twice for hot water with lemon before it finally arrived, and we also asked to have our bean sprouts steamed, but they never came. When the bill came, an 18 percent tip had already been automatically added. Servers are supposed to warn you about this, but we were never told, and for the kind of service we got, I would not have left that much. We ordered the wings and they tasted really bad. I usually eat anything and almost never spit food out, but these were so bad that I actually had to. On top of that, my chopsticks smelled strongly of chemicals, like they hadn’t been washed properly, while my partner’s were fine. I want to warn people about this place. The food is bad, the service is poor, and the automatic tip is unfair.

Google
As I was craving Pho, we visited this place with great reviews. Thankfully, despite the long lines, we managed to get a table in less than 10 minutes. We ordered Pork Sausage Rolls Grilled Pork Rolls Sauteed Flank Steak Pho We found it interesting that our starters came later after our Pho was served; perhaps we waited another 5 minutes. Wouldn't it be great to have the appetizers before our main dish? We felt it was fast moving chain of restaurant, it was great that our Pho came quickly but it wasn't hot - more of warm Pho. We enjoyed the rolls and the flavor of the Pho despite only having it warm. Overall, we enjoyed the dishes that we ordered and were happy.

Google
Fast service, delicious food. We arrived around 12 noon, and the queue is about a full page long, maybe 20 ahead of us. Went back to the car so we can get seated bec the waiting area indoors is full, and it's raining outside. After 25 mins, we got a call on my phone that our table was ready. Went in and got seated immediately. We were escorted to our table. It was empty except for the paper cover and the menus. When we got seated, another person brought the utnesils and glases of water. We were told to call her when ready. We ordered one beef Pho to share with my wife and one appetizer plus 2 appetizers to-go. We were told there is a surcharge of 18% for dining in, so we will be charged separately for the to-go order - it makes sense, no problem. It only took maybe 2 mins, and our hot Pho order arrived with one extra bowl so we can share. That was quick, considering the place is busy with a long queue. Then, after 5 min, the crab appetizer came. The Pho was really good. It's not salty and tasted better than our favorite Pho place. It came in a larger bowl, so immediately, we can say that we made the right decision to share it. The beef peices are in cubes and they're cooked well and easy to chew and eat. However, it didn't come with a lot of meat - or could be bec they're in thick cubes, instead of several thin slices. My wife's favorite was the crab appetizer. I liked it too, but I liked the Pho better. Our to-go order were Pork Egg rolls and Goi Cuon. I avoid reviewing to-go orders if we don't immediately eat them as soon as we get home, so I will not comment on these unless they are exceptionally still good even hours later.

Google
Please do not go here. There was a maggot in my soup. Upon telling them they just offered to replace the soup after they took the napkins with the maggot away so fast. This is totally not the first time this happens. Im calling the food inspectors. This is disgusting. I hope this gets taken care of and other people stay away from here to never allow thsu to happen again. This is not the only bad review, there are other related to this like having symptoms of food poisoning and finding bugs in their food. I am still in shock and complete disgust as this just happened to me today. DO NOT COME HERE!!!!

William J.

Google
Pho Ha Noi is an amazing place to get great Vietnamese food, with helpful service and flavorful dishes. I usually order chicken breast pho, which always tastes delicious and isn't too hot. In addition, I really enjoy the crispy rice, which has good flavor and texture. The waiters and staff are always kind and provide good service. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I always look forward to checking out a Vietnamese restaurant in the Bay Area. But the food did not match the enthusiasm I had. Egg Rolls - It was obvious that the egg rolls were fried in oil that had not been changed out in a while. The color of the egg rolls were dark, not in an over fried kind of way. I was hopeful the flavor would make up for it but it was a hard miss. The filling was confusing, it had wood ear mushrooms, little meat and zero flavor. The sauce that came with it was also bland. Bun Bo Hue - Biggest disappointment of all. As soon as the bowl was set on the table, I knew something was amiss - the color of the soup from the spices, the distinctive aroma from the fermented shrimp paste (IYKYK). The soup tasted like a tom yum soup. And it was not served with pork blood and sliced beef. It was served with a boned in short rib that was not tender. For the bun bo hue connoisseurs, you know where to go without me needing to tell you where to go for the best bun bo hue in the Bay *cough cough* that ONE in SJ. Beef Stew Noodle Soup - I knew I was going to be set up for disappointment as soon as I saw the server walking over with a narrow ramen-like bowl. Because what pho restaurants serves bo kho in a bowl like that! The soup/noodles ratio was way off - the consistency of the soup was too thick and the noodles sopped it up pretty quickly. The flavors - again missing that beef stew aroma and the soup was sweet. It was served with small beef knuckles which was bizarre. They looked like the ones used for making the stock as opposed to actually serving it with the noodles. The pieces I had barely had any meat on them. The quality did not match up to the price point. And the automatic service charge for a party of six is so unnecessary for this type of restaurant. It's most likely the reason contributing to the subpar service, the server was nonchalant and unfriendly. The experience had me believe that someone told the owner he should open a restaurant because he's a great cook and he ran with that idea, blindly.

Yelp
Would love to see if others are experiencing the same thing: I haven't been here in 6 months and when I went tonight I noticed the broth wasn't the same as before. The flavor was more muted. Maybe it was just an off batch of broth, but seeing if others have had similar experiences.
google avatar

Vicky Y.

Yelp
I'm usually all about supporting small Viet spots, so I was a little hesitant when my friends wanted to go to Pho Ha Noi, a bigger chain in the Bay. But wow, consider me converted because this place slaps!! The short rib pho was so meaty and tender, and the broth was light, clean, and exactly what I needed for my extremely bloated stomach. Comforting, simple, perfect. No wonder this chain grew so big. Very well-deserved and definitely recommending this one!
google avatar

Michele T.

Yelp
A very good pho place! Busy Friday nite so after getting on the electronic wait list we all worked up an appetite. Extensive menu with gluten free options. Food arrived fairly quickly looking yummy and plentiful. Had to get an order to go of the fresh noodles to go with the soup we just couldnt finish. Dining area felt spacious and was well lit. Service efficient and pleasant. The only improvement would be a more parking (located right next to a hotel which doesn't allow restaurant parking). But patience can be rewarded as the restaurant provides steady flow of food & service so eventually a parking spot would open up.
google avatar

Debbie N.

Yelp
I am familiar with Pho Ha Noi since this is the only place that seem to have done decent Vietnamese food in the area. However the day that we went there for this dished the food seem to be a bit salty. Both my and my husband pho were quite salty and I had to add in multiple lime pieces to be able to enjoy my pho properly. Service is underwhelming, they gave us our food but seem like they don't want to be there. I understand it is opening time so maybe they are still a little sleepy. Nice design inside. Very spacious.
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
I saw people talking about this pho place on Reddit, and it didn't disappoint! We came for dinner, so they were out of their homemade noodles. I got egg noodles instead with the beef combo. The bone broth was so rich and full of depth. I didn't even need to add any sriracha or hoisin. I wish there was some more variety in the herbs given, but overall the meats were great and the portion size was huge.
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Love this place. Fast service. I always get the rare steak and fresh noodle. I love how much green onions they put in the soup.
google avatar

Anuraag R.

Yelp
Amazing food though sometimes the pho meat can be a little overcooked or not hot enough. Decent service here and lot of seating. Always a good spot in the area
google avatar

Linda D.

Yelp
My go to place for pho. In winter it's the first thing that I suggest to go if we are looking for soup dish. They have other chef specialty that's equally good. Service is fast and the place is well lit.
google avatar

Shahab F.

Yelp
Ordered the beef stew and it was delicious!! Also, Katelyn and Ngân were incredibly sweet! Will definitely be returning when we're around!
google avatar

Angel H.

Yelp
Ha Noi Special Rolls were great! That was probably the only thing that wasn't meh lol They ran out of fresh noodles for the combination pho and it didn't have enough noodles for the noodles to meat ratio. The Vietnamese sizzling steak entree was ordered rare, and it came out more like medium well and the pan wasn't even sizzling. Parking was terrible on a Friday night, had to walk far out and then get dropped off at car after dinner. Staff was very busy but apologetic, nice and thoughtful. Not sure if this place is worth it with so many other legit Viet options in the South Bay.
google avatar

Anthony Y.

Yelp
Possibly the best pho place in South Bay! Dan was very helpful and the service was great

Dan C.

Yelp
This place is not only the best phot restaurant in the area, it is the best Pho Ha Noi location as well. Trust me, I've tried them all. They are clean, consistent, and extremely tasty. It will not disappoint.
google avatar

Nik W.

Yelp
Parking here is a little bit of a nightmare as the lot is small - so at peak hours, people were circling for a spot to open up. The place was busy, which is always a good sign! I went with a large group, so we all ordered different things. I got the Bun Bo Hue. To be honest, I wouldn't go back here again for that particular dish. The meat was nice and tender, but the broth wasn't very spicy or tasty even when I added all the extra spice they provided on the side, it lacked a little something special. Everyone else enjoyed their noodle and rice dishes, so I'd try one of those next time I'm in town and reassess!
google avatar

Ayanna W.

Yelp
Dan and Sang were wonderful. This was my first time here and the chicken breast Pho was clean and tasty. I also got chicken wings but they were salty but good. The service is excellent...

Rachel L.

Yelp
Wonderful food & service!! We had Sang as our server and she was kind and welcoming. We were seated quickly and food came fast. We also received free coconut and mung bean pudding dessert.
google avatar

Elaine P.

Yelp
We came to Pho Ha Noi for dinner. food was enjoyable and our server Danny was great. 5/5 for him.
google avatar

Honey V.

Yelp
We've dined at this pho place several times, and it's always been one of our favorites in Cupertino. My husband was craving for Pho and since we were in the area, this was the best option. The food was as good as we remembered, flavorful broth, fresh ingredients and comforting. I found a piece of hair in my rice (which they did replace). What really surprised us was the 18% service charge automatically added to our bill without any prior notice. We've always enjoyed this place in the past, but after this experience, we're not sure if we'll be coming back.

Christopher L.

Yelp
Danny da goat. Delicious food. Great service. They really hook it up with the portions.
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Great food and tasty flavors. All food came out super quick and was fresh. Shoutout Danny great service

Jeff L.

Yelp
Honestly, for the serving size - the prices are too low. Consistently delicious be it pho or roast chicken, you can't go wrong. If your palate tilts toward tart, the passion fruit drink is great too.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken thigh pho through DoorDash and got severe food poisoning. Both my friend and I who ate the chicken pho kept vomiting nonstop -- even bile came out. My friend had to go to the ER for IV treatment. We didn't eat anything else that day, and our other friends who ordered the beef pho were totally fine. This was absolutely awful and dangerous -- I highly recommend avoiding the chicken pho at all costs.

Jasmine M.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! The pho was rich, flavorful, and comforting--exactly what you want from a great pho spot. The broth was perfectly seasoned, the noodles were cooked just right, and the portions were generous. What really made the experience stand out was our server, Danny. He was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being overbearing. He checked in at the right moments, made great recommendations, and made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. The atmosphere was cozy and clean, and the food came out quickly despite it being busy. You can tell they care about both their food and their customers here. I'll definitely be coming back and recommending this place to friends--especially if you're lucky enough to get Danny as your server!
google avatar

Oscar L.

Yelp
This place never disappoints! The food is delicious and the customer service is very attentive! My server Danny was very helpful with some of the new changes in the menu and patient! Thank you!
google avatar

Brian N.

Yelp
Been a long time customer here. The service from Dan and Alex has always been top notch. The noodles are always delicious with a generous portion of herbs and meat! There is sometimes a wait during peak hours but it's always worth it.
google avatar

Anthony N.

Yelp
I am super biased because i grew up eating vietnamese food cooked by my mom and had the chance to go back on multiple occasions. I think that the rice plate i got was ok. There were two pieces of pork and the second piece was dry, it could have been because i took a longer time to get to it or it could have been because there was less fat on the second piece to keep it juicy. I liked the overall presentation and I really love that they were able to fit 10 of us. The fish sauce was tasty to others but mine felt like it had a hint of soy sauce and that made the dish taste different to me.
google avatar

Christian P.

Yelp
Can't wait to come back. Pho Bo Dac Biet (P1) and Nem Nuong Ninh Hoa (A4) were filling and delicious. Staff was attentive and knowledgable - 5/5 for Dan!
google avatar

Jo A.

Yelp
Came in for weekday lunch and they just so happen to be running a summer special for the grilled pork vermicelli w/ egg roll for $13.95. For being a promotional item, the portions were still huge and not skimped. I was impressed by how well they executed the food, especially considering how busy they were. The food came out quickly and the service was reasonable.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
I've come here multiple times and I have to say the food is always delicious, fast, and hearty. We tend to stick with just a few orders each time with our favorite being the beef pho: 1. Ha Noi Special rolls - these come with six halves with three different types of rolls. However if you're looking for a smaller portion my favorite is the A5 Vietnamese Grilled Pork sausage rolls with crispy pieces inside. 2. P2 Beef pho with rare USDA choice flap meat - flap meat is the basically the flattened out raw beef that "cooks" in the hot broth they pour on top. Get the pho with fresh noodles. 3. Grilled pork and pork egg roll vermicelli - they give a good portion of noodles and the pork egg roll in the dish is delicious!
google avatar

Di H.

Yelp
4.5 stars for food, 3 for price Come here during off peak hours, otherwise expect to wait for a while. My favorite place for pho. The noodles are always fresh and the meats are nice. The broth is well flavored (sometimes with strong cinnamon). We've tried a lot of different food and pretty much most is great, so don't shy away from trying something different. I really do enjoy their spicy beef soup.
google avatar

Mariela M.

Yelp
This is for the Bún bò Huế. Haven't been to pho Ha Noi in a bit so my bf and I wanted to try them out again. It's always busy here so we recommend coming before the lunch hour. I got the Bún bò Huế and it tasted a bit off?? Usually they are served with the cabbage you can put in but they gave me the regular bean sprouts and that's , they're also usually spicy. This location was just bland and NO spice at all.. it also came with a big chunk of meat which is pretty cool but it was hard to eat. This location also already adds 18% gratuity when checking out, so make sure you're aware of that!
google avatar

Norris T.

Yelp
One of the best bowls of comfort noodles I've had in the Bay Area. They simmer their beef bones for a full 24 hours which provides a rich and elegant depth to their pho broth while the large beef ribs are fall off the bone tender! Portion sizes generally seem to be quite generous with enough to share (as if I would share my food lol). If I wasn't in the mood for pho, the Roasted Kui Fei Chicken with Crispy Sticky Rice (Xoi Ga Roti) is a standout dish which my friend described as tender, juicy, and with delicious crispy skin and paired perfectly with the crispy sticky rice. Be aware that Pho Han Noi in Cupertino (and Palo Alto) has an automatic 18% service charge applied to all bills, even for single diners. The inside is spacious but it tends to get packed lightning fast especially at peak lunch or dinner time which includes the parking lot so be aware.
google avatar

Ava Y.

Yelp
I use to love coming here but today the meat was very chewy and wasn't that good. I'm a-little disappointed given the amount it cost for a bowl plus the mandatory 18% tip. I don't mind paying for good food but I hate paying for bad or mediocre food. I hope they will fix this.
google avatar

Allen L.

Yelp
You know a lot has changed over the past decade with Pho Ha Noi stretching into the Cupertino area. A welcomed addition, I'm sure, but it doesn't beat the original San Jose location. I came here during lunch time which it was swarmed by (presumably) the Apple and other tech company employees on their lunch break. It is an operation and they're quick to rotate patrons in and out. I got the special combination pho and, as someone who's in NYC these days, it was comforting to enjoy this bowl. It's a carnivores' dream. I thought the flavors were all there and the meat was quality. I also got the nem nuong which was refreshing and great, but admittedly doesn't come close to what you can get at Brodard's in Orange County. My one gripe was that they automatically add a service charge to the bill. You can tell in the other reviews that it rubs people the wrong way. I rarely cross into Cupertino anymore, so it's nice to know that there's a decent pho spot around if you're in the area and have a craving for pho.
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
Visited on Sunday evening, there's a short waiting line. We managed to get seats in 15 minutes. Spicy hue noodles with 1lb of beef short ribs, flavorful but the noodles turned soggy after a while and make it awful to eat. Garlic noodles as sides, it's good. Imperial crab roll, crispy and so hot inside, careful when you eat. Flank steak pho is awesome, the meat is tender, but they put too many spring onion on the soup. I will give 4 stars if there is less spring onion on the broth.
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
Great place for authentic north Vietnamese style Pho. The broth is on point. Service is awesome and has lots of space
google avatar

Junsheng X.

Yelp
Still some of the best pho I can find in the Bay Area for their beef quality, just like the San Jose store. Quick service during lunch rush and they have a free dessert! Very spacious location as well

Kenny C.

Yelp
Food at Pho Ha Noi is always of high quality and taste. The service is very fast and efficient. Dan was my server today and she was very attentive everything was expected. The restaurant is large and can accompany many guests even in peak times.
google avatar

Tommy J.

Yelp
Love this place, the food portions are great and the server Dan. She was very kind and made the experience very pleasant. Fast service and good food.
google avatar

Caroline L.

Yelp
This is probably one of my favorite places for pho but unfortunately I think the price has just gotten overpriced over time. Their pho is super flavorful. From the soup base to the noodle quality and meat, it's all quite delicious. The food also comes out very quick and the servers are attentive to filling your drinks. The place is also spacious and has a good environment to do catch ups with friends. The only reason why I don't give it 5 stars is cause of the price which is almost close to $20 and they do a mandate of 18% gratuity unless you request from the manager to take it off. They do have a weekday deal which seems more worth it. Still need to pay the 18% gratuity but it is about $15 which makes the price a little better.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
I was a bit disappointed on their drink menu and the overall flavor of their broth. They offer beer as their only alcoholic option, whereas, their Palo alto chain has many cocktail options to choose from. I had the spicy beef rib noodle and it was meh. The broth was neither spicy and flavorful.

Kevin C.

Yelp
Good service, and Dan was very helpful. and the S2 house specialty is good as well. P2 was also good.

Nathan O.

Yelp
The pho is pretty good, and service was also good. Very good about refilling our waters.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
FOOD: 4 SERVICE: 2 AMBIANCE 3 VALUE: 3 They add 18% service charge on your bill after tax. That is equivalent to 20% and then they have the gall to ask for 3% more! Service was no where near the quality deserving of 20%! They didn't refill our water cups, never came by to ask about the food. I had to ask multiple times for the check and I didn't get a printed copy when I asked for it. We ordered the Spring special Bun Bo Hue w/short rib. It was BBH style noodle soup with three slices of meat roll and a 3/4-1" thick piece of cross cut short rib. The BBH tasted genuine, the meat roll was pretty standard, but the short rib was tender and flavorful. We also had the fried spring roll. The roll was fried nicely and it was served with lettuce leaf and fish dipping sauce. At $9 for two rolls, it was a bit on the expensive side. I really have mixed emotions on this place. The food was good, but charging me 18% after tax service fee is not acceptable for mediocre service. Based upon this visit, I will not be back.
google avatar

Eva C.

Yelp
Came right when it opened so parking was easy. I think parking might be a bit difficult if we came at a more crowded time. I got the special combination pho w/ rare meat, well done, brisket, tendon, short rib meat, and meatball. Their soup flavor is good and the portion sizes are big. The service is also speedy. I will say that their pho is definitely on the pricier side and there's a 18% service charge automatically added to the tab. Not a place I would come often as I don't think it's that much better than other places.
google avatar

Justine V.

Yelp
I've been a pho fanatic for years, and Pho Ho Nai in Cupertino has quickly become my go to spot for that perfect bowl of comfort. The broth is rich and aromatic, simmered to perfection with just the right balance of spices not too overpowering, but full of depth that keeps you slurping till the last drop. I always go for the rare steak and brisket combo, and wow, the protein to noodle ratio is spot on! Generous portions of tender meat that make every bite satisfying, without skimping on the noodles or fresh herbs. Even though they have an automatic tip added to the bill, I think the extra charge totally matches the value you're getting high quality ingredients and hearty servings that justify it. No complaints here; it's worth every penny for the experience. The service is friendly and efficient, especially during lunchtime when it's bustling but never chaotic. They get your order out quick, so it's ideal for a midday break without feeling rushed. The place is clean, cozy, and has that authentic vibe with Vietnamese decor that makes you feel like you're in a hidden gem. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by you won't regret it! Can't wait for my next visit
google avatar

Iza B.

Yelp
The server was quite rude when taking my order and didn't read it back to confirm. Unfortunately, her attitude made the experience unpleasant, and I don't think I'll be returning. Food was 3/10. Try PHO SAN JOSE. Friendly people work there and authentic pho
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
I got their recommended pho bowl with some short ribs and other beef goodness. I had a lot left over so the broth basically solidified as like a Jello so that's how you know that they use beef bones in their broth, which is great! I normally don't crave pho but that day I was feeling it. I forgot a little Nam nuong spring roll which is my favorite, the sauce though like almost had no taste but it completes the flavor profile? I normally prefer a peanut/hoison sauce. I went on a Sunday and it was busy! Ambiance was busy. Thought it was interesting they place paper on the table, guess it helps with clean up? Would come back when craving pho!!!
