The Best Restaurants and Bars in the Lower Garden District (LGD) | Eater New Orleans

"Simply delicious Vietnamese food is the standard at Pho Tran on Magazine. This restaurant offers myriad spring roll options, along with steamed buns stuffed with marinated chicken or shrimp. Excellent pho options includes tofu, but the rare steak is a house favorite. Lemongrass chicken, shaken beef, and banh mi sandwiches are other highlights." - Clair Lorell

The Pho was really good! I ordered the Pho Tran Combination (Pho Dac Biet) for $16.99. Food portions were enough to fit the price range. The broth also tasted really fresh and hot. The inside was really nice and clean. Great location on Magazine Street. Service was really friendly as well. I would come back if I’m in the uptown area and craving Pho at the same time.

Google
Very nice restaurant, the Pho was good but not excellent. The soup was just ok, but the meat/ round was good. I have tasted better Pho than this restaurant. The size of the bowl was ok, not as large as other pho restaurants. The price of the soup was on the higher side because of the location. Overall experience was good. Thank you for the super attentive waiter. She noticed I needed a fork and immediately brought it to me.

Marisa

Google
We had the combination phó and it tasted sour. The best way I could explain it is like when meat is spoiled and it has that sour flavor in smell. The noodles were also old or overcooked. I can tell because they broke when you pulled it out if the soup. If you've ever taken phó home before and microwaved it, you will know what I mean. I usually dont blast restaurants and I am not trying to. But the phó here was extremely bad, the worst I've had in my life. Based on the other reviews, it seems like they were just having an off day. The picture below is before I added everything and before I knew what the taste was. My husband and I stopped eating it after a few bites. My friends who ordered other items were satisfied with their meals. The phó here was very disappointing, especially because I was the one who convinced the group to come here. I wanted it to be good, I really did...

Google
Chanced upon this Pho restaurant while being deprived of Asian food (after being in New Orleans for 4 days) and am sooooo happy and satisfied with the food here. The pho broth is authentic and has the usual condiments on the side. But what I enjoyed the most was the crab Rangoon - crab meat went surprisingly well with Philadelphia cream cheese and deep fried in wanton skin. And not forgetting the main highlight is the Vietnamese coffee!! Really got me to reminisce all the wonderful Vietnamese coffee in Ho Chi Minh. Thank you for the wonderful food!

Google
We came for the Bao Buns & they did not disappoint, we got the shrimp, lemongrass chicken and requested beef which was off the menu but they accommodated, our favorite was the lemongrass chicken ones! We also tried the wings (spicy version) they were delicious and the perfect crispy texture, 10/10 highly recommend and shojtout to our server Henry for choosing the perfect juices to complement our meal we loved the kiwi!

Google
Staff are great and attentive. Although they were busy there were a few staff on so it didn’t take long to get helped. My food came out quickly. The pho was a good portion size. The peanut sauce was good for my appetizer, it had real half pieces of peanuts in it.

James Wells

Google
The food was awesome. Didn't have my favorite dish, but what I got was pretty dag gone close. The flavor was on point. First place I've been to that has chili oil at the table. Not sriracha or paste. But actual oil.

Google
This is a wonderfully comfortable, friendly Vietnamese restaurant in the Lower Garden. It also happens to have what I think is the absolute best pho ga in town. I have never had better chicken broth. The portions on everything are very generous as well. We are always welcomed warmly and they even know our "regular" order. I almost always get the pho ga, and my husband goes for the beef vermicelli bowl with a side of nem, though he has also had the beef pho. The fresh shrimp spring rolls are really delicious as well. Can't say enough good things about this lovely little spot.

Yelp
Pho Tran never disappoints. The service is top notch and the ambiance is chill yet welcoming and friendly! I always get their shrimp spring rolls with the peanut sauce and the combination pho. And their pickled salty lemonade is perfect for the summer. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Hubby wanted Vietnamese food, so here we are! The service and food were wonderful. It's a full family business as we see most of the family members helping out. Thai Tea was delicious and not overly sweet, thank goodness! The spring rolls and the peanut sauce were perfect. It tastes exactly like how I would make it at home, which is a plus for me. I really enjoyed all of our appetizers. Everything tasted fresh and looks very appetizing. My daughter really liked the steamed buns. I thought it reminded me of a banh mi (it was so good!), and I wish I had more room in my tummy to finish all my food. The appetizers filled me up quite well, but I did my best with my Hu Tieu Mi. The noodles for the Hu Tieu Mi were very memorable and different from what I've had. These were much thinner, but the flavor it absorbed from the soup had me craving for more. My hubby and I tried everything that we ordered, and he loved my soup and thought the noodles were amazing. His Pho Dac Biet was really good as well. He said it hits the spot and was really glad he ordered it. We both enjoyed our delicious Vietnamese food and knew that New Orleans would not disappoint. Until next time!

Yelp
The Vietnamese coffee was rich and perfectly balanced, setting a great tone for our meal. We tried the seafood noodle soup and shrimp, both seafood-packed dishes that were fantastic. Service was friendly, and the location was spot on. Only critique is that protein portions were a bit on the lighter side. However, definitely a great Vietnamese spot to check out!

Yelp
This place is soooooo good. Like a little hidden gem. The pho is flavorful and I am very particular about it. The com bo luc lac had me stuffed! The spring rolls were good as well. The service is fast and they are very nice. There is seating outside and inside, inside is like your typical Vietnamese restaurant. So good and comforting.
google avatar

Yelp
What a wonderful spot! Super polite service. Atmosphere is relaxing and chill. Food was great!! Pho was flavorful and just the right amount. The spring rolls tasted fresh and delicious. Definitely will come back!
google avatar

Brenda L.

Yelp
The brisket, rare beef pho was spectacular. Broth was on point. The meat was very tender and very tasty. The combination spring rolls were also very good as well. Although I'm not a fan of avocado in my spring roll. Quaint little restaurant, average service.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried out Pho Tran uptown today. It was so delicious we'll definitely be back!! The best pho in town
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
The banhmi and pho here are delicious. Service is friendly and fast. The chia seed coconut drink it's refreshing and just what I needed from the heat outside. Prices are reasonable and quantity is good. Highly recommend this place for anyone who likes Vietnamese food.

Yelp
I'm neutral about the place. I use to frequent the place a lot. Loved the lemongrass curry tofu and the tofu spring roll but after the last visit not sure I will return. The meal usually has some flavour to it but what I got was super dry and no flavour at all. Like they forgot the lemongrass and curry! The fish sauce didn't even help with the flavour or dryness and the spring roll had more lettuce than tofu. Service was ok but I don't think I'll revisit again.

Yelp
Popped in here on a Friday night around 7. About 3-4 empty tables left. We ordered crab ragoons as an appetizer. Very tasty. I got the stir fry beef and the flavor was fantastic, I wish it had a bigger variety of veggies (bean sprouts or bok choy). My friend got the veggie pho and the broth was very flavorful and presentation was nice. There was only one guy working and he was being so attentive to every table. It felt like a true family run business. Definitely check this place out!!

Yelp
Pho Tran has good Vietnamese food and I usually focus on the beef brisket or chicken pho or a banh mi. Sometimes I will sample some of the other items but generally I'm going for pho most of the time and the occasional banh mi and way less frequently one of the other dishes will get selected. Currently I think this is the best Vietnamese food to be found in the Lower Garden District and Uptown area. Overall I've enjoyed all my meals here and the service has been good but could be a bit faster with drink refills sometimes.

Yelp
Ok talk about a good broth, this place is amazing the food is delicious and it came out pretty quick. So, let's talk about the 1 star that is missing for a 5 star. So when I came in I felt like the place is missing something maybe some decorations on the wall or maybe some plants, it is so empty that it echos in there so watch out what you say. Then the second missing star was that this baby cockroach that ran on the table and I try to get twice came around on top of our table I was able to knock it off to the floor but it got away. After this I just lost appetite, just eating the egg rolls made me gag, because of the crunch, lol. Now to the food, I give this place a 5 star on flavor and whole food aesthetics and all. There was nothing missing nothing was too salty or too sweet or very spicy just perfect. We ordered the brisket and thin steak and my fiancé got the steak only. We also got the pork belly bao that was amazing perfect just perfect crunch to gory and flavor profile. We also had the egg rolls. I want to come again and maybe rate it a little bigger but I do need this cockroach thing pass over for a few months. It just awed me. I thought it was just me but we both saw it. But the broth is amazing. I have some leftover broth I am about to eat with some meatballs cause it's so fire.

Yelp
Ordered the shrimp spring rolls, crab Rangoon, and shrimp pho. Shrimp spring rolls were fresh and the peanut sauce was superb. The crab rangoons were pretty good too. Let's talk about this shrimp pho....IT WAS EVERYTHING! The shrimps were big and plentiful. The veggies were fresh and the broth was authentic. I am definitely going back to try other menu items.

Yelp
My favorite Pho Shop in Nola. I usually get the Brisket Pho. It comes out piping hot with garnish on the side (I love the Bean Sprouts). They always give plenty of meat, and the broth is to so flavorful yet classic. The service is always great, but the appearance of this place could definitely make you not take a second look. Looks aren't everything. I recommend them for Viet Food!
google avatar

Yelp
Dropped in here starving after some parades and grabbed a banh mi and some spring rolls to go. I did end up waiting quite a while, but the food was very good when it came out. I appreciate that they're generous with the tofu. Some hefty slabs, for sure. And the bread was great. Overall, it was a large filling sandwich. My only criticism would be that I could do with a bit more spread... butter... sauce? Idk what type of dressing they normally put on banh mi but it didn't seem to have any. Sometimes, because I order tofu, cooks assume I'm vegan (I'm not), and leave off the butter ir mayonnaise so perhaps that's what happened. The spring rolls were epic, and a meal unto themselves. Delicious peanut sauce. Everything fresh and tasty.

Yelp
Some of the best pho in the city! Great service, and their rice plates are very good as well!

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Their pho reminds me of my mom's, so it always feels like I have a piece of home with me. My fiancé and I have been coming here since we moved to New Orleans a couple months ago and it's great every time. The servers are very friendly and the food is delicious.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
THIS PHO BROTH IS SO SOOTHING, piping hot, and flavorful. Not too oily which I love. The grilled pork summer roll is so refreshing, and the grilled pork seasoning is amazing. Perfect texture and juicy pork. I also really enjoyed the jalapeños they give us. Viet ice coffee is not overly sweet and is authentic. Service was slow, but didnt mind bc the food didn't disappoint one bit. Bathroom is spacious and has a table to put your stuff, soap ran out so it was watery pump.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
Delicious chicken pho. Kind staff. Great prices. A neighborhood staple. Enjoyed sitting outside and people watching on Magazine.

Yelp
Nice little Vietnamese restaurant in New Orlean. The best pho soup base. Even better than some of the places in San Jose, CA. The young man (server) helped me was very attentive and courteous. Great food and friendly staff. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Oh no, my new favorite Vietnamese cuisine eatery on Magazine St. Opened 5-6 weeks ago great ambiance, love the open air layout. Nice decorum them came the goods and it was all amazingly good. In the neighborhood this is a must have experience... Remember to support your local eateries or we will all starve...

Yelp
Our party of 11 were on the CitySightseeing bus tour and saw this restaurant and decided to try it out. First of all, all the staff member that greeted us were great. We tried the Vietnamese sandwiches and the Cha Gio and both were very good. I would recommend this place for those who want a fast tasty lunch with great service.

Yelp
Pho Tran is quite an authentic, hidden gem restaurant . When we entered, we were kindly greeted by two waiters and we got to sit anywhere we wanted. We ordered lychee juice, pickled lemon soda, the first pho dish, and a shrimp spring roll (aka summer roll). The roll was mediocre but the broth of the pho noodle was the best I've had when compared to New York and Philadelphia. The flavor was so splendid--one could tell that the chef spent some time making this broth. The drinks were also amazing, it was on par with drinks I've had in Hong Kong and New York.
google avatar

Aerodynamic P.

Yelp
The pho has good depth of flavor. Not just added salt like so many others. Real flavorful broth.

Ava K.

Yelp
MUST COME HERE! We walked up with a group of 9 people and they happily served us. We all got different stuff and it was all delicious. Our server was so friendly too.

Yelp
one of my favorite places to grab a casual bite to eat in the LGD. it's a cute family run joint. the food here is so fresh and delicious. huge portion sizes for the price as well. pho broth is stellar and the chili oil is incredible! cant wait to try more dishes.
google avatar

Sashy M.

Yelp
I'm an ironic attempt to cool off with something fresh and hydrating, we stopped into this pho spot. The experience started strong with air conditioning. We ordered the pork steam buns and they were delicious! I could have just had two orders of these and left a happy gal. For entrees I went with the lemongrass vermicelli bun and my partner got the rare stead and brisket pho. The entrees were incredibly mediocre. There was barely a whisper of lemongrass flavor on the chicken. Overall the dish needed a much heartier mix of fresh veggies and herbs. It was pretty bland in color and flavor. The pho was ok- it wasn't aggressively good or bad. Mostly, my poor review calls in the fact that it took 45 mins for us to get our food. On a very average paced Thursday night. Pho is famously quick- considering that almost every element is premade/prepared.

Yelp
I was craving some Pad Thai and wanted to go somewhere close to home. My friend told me about this spot so we went together. I ordered the Pad Thai, no shrimp. It came with beef, which was fine. I thought why not because I am allergic to shrimp. But something just wasn't right. I have had this dish several times but this time the beef was a bit tough. It appeared that the quality wasn't right and the meat was dry. A bit too dry. The noodles were a little greasy and could've used just a tad more sauce. Okay I get it, you may have changed your supplier or you were having an off day. But, paying attention to small details for returning customers means a lot. The server asked how we enjoyed our meal and I told her that the beef was a bit tough but overall it was a pretty good dish. I was pleased. Then the chef came out. That is right the actual chef came out from the kitchen and got confrontational with me over my opinion about the beef. I was like what the hell?!?! Dude..... confrontational about the beef!!!! The actual nerve!!!!! I was honest and respectful. If no one tells you, how can it improve? Anyways. I will definitely not be going back to that place. If you have to come out the back and get confrontational about a customer being honest about their meal I will take my money elsewhere. And here I am trying to support local business. I will go to another local spot next time.

Yeng Y.

Yelp
We had planned to come for the best Pho in NOLA on Sunday night. It was the night of the storm where there was flash flooding. We were dumb and should not have been out but there we were with water splashing up their doorway. They welcomed us in and offered small comforts to our wet soaking feet & legs. Enjoyed the hot steaming bowls of pho the best we can given the circumstance. They closed down at 8 due to the weather but let us hang around until we were able to get a cab to come pick us up. These people are kind and special. Thank you for showing kindness to a couple of dumb visitors who will always support Pho Tran.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Yum! The pho broth is unsurpassed! We're going back again and again! The staff is welcoming and the restaurant is clean. Food came out quickly and don't forget to try the Thai tea.
google avatar

Liza A.

Yelp
Yummo - love this spot! I've searched and found the best pho here! The broth is amazing. The rice dishes are top notch also. Tried the grilled pork over rice with egg rolls and the shrimp fried rice. The rice is well executed - not a mushy mess that you find at some places. Portions are super generous. The food is so good though - you can't stop eating. Definitely check out - support great local businesses like this spot!

Yelp
Huge fan before PhoTran took over, the family who owned it was polite and treated their customers with respect. I placed a order togo, Won Ton Soup Noodle. With Vegetable broth on the side. Love the Vegetable broth when Pho Noi Viet was running the place. Told the person on the phone I would be by at Noon to get the order. Walked in, asked for my order, oh I was going to send back to the kitchen, look at him like why? It's just 11:50 am. Paid and left Got back to work the office, written on the side of the broth, BEEF! How due you screw up broth. Called, was hung up on. Called back, was asked to bring it back. I said No I am back at the office. We're closed tomorrow! Lesson is, things aren't always the same! Will double check my order before leaving. Will be a good while before I give them any business... Rudeness doesn't work in my book...

Yelp
The banh mi dac biet was AMAZING! And everyone was super nice! Please rate this a 5 star rating! Its the best place I've ever been to!

Yelp
This is my favorite vietnamese in the area! Family owned & operated. Food is awesome and the servers are very nice
google avatar

Yelp
We were staying in the neighborhood for a few days and we stopped at Pho Tran for lunch. We ordered some chao chao and some shrimp and beef pho. Wow!!Everything was so tasty. The food was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Bernard J.

Yelp
I've had Pho Tran a few times before for lunch, it's very consistent in terms of cleanliness and good service. I typically get the beef over rice with a fried egg on top. Beef has great flavor and I always enjoy the fresh salad on the side, it complaints the main dish well. Would recommend.
google avatar

Monique L.

Yelp
I usually get my pho fix on the West Bank or in the East, but Pho Tran is now a go to when I don't want to venture out that far! I'd put it in the same tier as Lily's. The broth was overall good and they gave you just enough meat and noodles. The broth was missing something, but i can't quite put my finger on it - it just lacked the depth of some of my favorite pho shops, but nothing chili oil and hoisin couldn't fix. I'm excited to try it again to see how it compares next time! Their service is also super friendly and quick! Overall a great new spot in the city.
google avatar

Julia P.

Yelp
First time here, the pork was very tender and juicy, vegetables were super fresh. The bread was crumblier and crunchier than the commonly chewy/crunchy sort of baguette, similar to typical French bread, but overall it was really good! Great quality food, and really friendly servers.

Sara S.

Yelp
The food here was very good! I got the grilled pork with rice and it was just what I was looking for. Very flavorful and it came with this broth that was awesome. Food came out quick and nice people. Definitely will come back!

Kermit A.

Yelp
This place is sooooo good! Phenomenal pho and the broth is on point. Really well service! The vibe is calm and cool, really good for relaxation. This restaurant is amazing and I would rate it 10 stars if I could!
google avatar

Nancy P.

Yelp
OMG!!!! The best food ever!! I'd leave a photo, but it was just so good!! Very fast, friendly service!

S M.

Yelp
Food was great but the esthetic did not match. We had a delicious meal and went across the street to get a beer. As we were there for the last 1/2 hour of operation, the meal was a bit rushed as we would liked to have lingered and savored the meal a bit more. So, if you go (which I would recommend) be sure and arrive well before closing!
google avatar

Donita M.

Yelp
Used to come here when it was Pho Noi Viet which I dearly loved. Then The owner's nephew took over (Tran) and kept the high standards of delicious Vietnamese food. I'm so happy they kept it in the family that keeps the same quality.
google avatar

LaMya K.

Yelp
The food is good! I ordered a few times from here. I had the brisket pho which was delicious!!!! So much flavor! I also had their crab rangoons and they NEVER disappoint! Ive had other places where it's too sweet like a dessert but this was perfect and savory!! And they are a nice size. I've also had the "Vietnamese style" po boy pork sandwiches and the pork is delicious very tender but I prefer the steam buns. The prices are reasonable and the staff is nice! I'll always be a customer
google avatar

Anthony N.

Yelp
Some of the best pho in town. Good enough to cheat on your grandma's pho but don't tell her.
google avatar

Aarti J.

Yelp
Definitely doesn't look like much when you walk in (I didn't even notice it at first), but once you find it, you're in for a treat. I really enjoyed the pho here. It's a quick and convenient bite near my apartment. My fave forever will be the Pho Tai (Rare Eye Round Steaks), but other good options which my friends tried include the filet pho and the combo pho.
google avatar

Gabi V.

Yelp
The food here is excellent and up to par with some of my favorite local Vietnamese restaurants. I got the rare steak and beef ball pho. The broth was incredibly balanced, tangy, savory and delicious. We also ordered the grilled pork banh mi *chefs kiss* and an appetizer called chao chao, which I've never seen before. Essentially, it was wantons filled with diced pork. I wouldn't order them again as they weren't really for my taste but it was nice to try something different. I will absolutely be returning for a quick meal of pho and banh mi!
google avatar

Andre P.

Yelp
Delicious & plentiful. A fantastic pho experience with lots of options for drinks. Reminded me of being in Vietnam
google avatar

F. L.

Yelp
Fairly standard Vietnamese food, not too special. I had the wonton noodle soup. It came out hot and reasonably fast, and the broth was pretty tasty. Helped me recover from my long travel day and all that. Not worth a journey, but a good neighborhood spot.
google avatar

Yelp
In the 15 years we've been away from our home town of NOLA many of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants have closed. Finding this Magazine Street gem was a real thrill! We pretty much always go for vermicelli and didn't deviate on this first visit. The pork was simply amazing. Better than any I've had on the west coast or, well, anywhere. We had their egg rolls as an appetizer and they were top notch too. Fast and friendly service with oh so reasonable prices made this a total five star experience. Eat here! You'll be glad you did.
