Everywhere to Eat and Drink in the Western Catskills

"The fried chicken here from Snowdance Farm — found in a lunchtime sandwich or a dinner dish with mac & cheese, a biscuit, and seasonal pickled vegetables — might be the state’s best fried chicken north of The Bronx. Balance it out with apple cider vinegar-fried Brussels sprouts or seasonal deviled eggs." - Richard Morgan

Hi I’m a frequent goer of the Pickled Owl and as of recently they’ve been getting it correct. I believe there was a rocky period when they were looking for a new executive chef because I noticed the menu was not rotating for quite some time! Happy to see last time my husband and I went there were some specials that were worth trying. The calamari portion should definitely be bigger and the curry aioli is not a great match. I think possibly having some type of sweet chili sauce or even salt and pepper calamari would work well here. The hummus and marinated olives are always a hit. I love that they add a seasonal flare to the hummus (it was beet when we went last and caramelized onions and garlic before that) so I absolutely look forward to having those things every time I come here. The Ciders on tap are also always stellar and the Mac n Cheese is always exquisite because the cheese is locally sourced I believe. Ordering to go here is really a NO!!! The portions to go never match the in house portions. This is an in person experience. Overall I recommend this place and it’s always a pleasure to spend my currency here.

Unique well-executed takes on classics pub grub. I enjoyed the apple blueberry hard cider, lamb burger, side of mac & cheese, and butternut squash hummus with winter veggies. Friendly service. Cozy decor with personality that doesn't take itself too seriously. Exceeded expectations. Adjacent playground for kids before/after meal.

We were so looking forward to trying the food here, unfortunately, it was quite the disappointment. We placed the following order to go : Cauliflower 12 Calamari 11 Gnocchi (vegan) 19 Veggie Burger 15 Side fries 5 Side mac and cheese 5 Brownie Sundae 7 Total ~ $80 We were unpleasantly surprised when we got home and opened up our order. Not only were the to go boxes quite small, they were not even close to full. The pictures I attached will show you just how ridiculous their portions are for the price. In terms of taste : The cauliflower was pretty good but mushy. The order of calamari had exactly 14 pieces - the we did not even finish it because that's how bad they tasted. The Gnocchi had 11 pieces of gnocchi - again they were just ok but the vegetables with it were very sweet and oily. The veggie burger was dry and just ok. The side fries were great and the portion was ok. The Mac and cheese had interesting flavor and was pretty good, however, the portion was about one big spoon of Mac and cheese... tiny. Finally the Brownie Sundae, which unfortunately we didn't get a chance to take a picture of, was absolutely delicious - it is so so good. In addition the amazing waitress was kind enough to have the sundae made only once I arrived so that it would not melt entirely by the time we got home. Overall, The Pickled Owl food was a disappointing experience. While some things were flavorful the majority left much to be desired and the portions in general are laughable. I hate to leave a negative review for a local restaurant, but I would not want anyone else to be so let down.

Reviewing a Sullivan County business in the off-season is always a little tough, and hard to know what is fair. I visited for lunch a week ago, arriving around 12:30. I wasn't sure if I should go in--since none of the three OPEN signs in the front windows were lit up. Inside, there were two ladies having a lunch meeting at the bar, and the bartender was also the only visible employee. This man, was not the most professional greeter for the business. Friendly, yes, but also wearing a camouflage T-shirt that barely covered his belly. He directed me to the rear dining area, where I had my choice of the entire room. Other than the chill from the two open windows in the room (it was about 30 out), I noticed the lack of any background music, which made it feel rather uncomfortable and also made the soon to be long wait much, much longer. I ordered a sandwich from the lunch menu, and then proceeded to wait... And wait... And wait. While the sandwich that came out was fresh and well-presented, I waited long enough that I think an employee drove down to Walmart to buy an avocado for my sandwich, and had to wait in line. No worries, because I did bring my Kindle with me, but still... The fries were very tasty, and somehow, a little charred, which was a nice touch. The pickle was fresh, and I think was brined with rosemary, but I can't be sure. The sandwich was on a freshly grilled bun, and the ingredients were flavorful, but the avocado patty only covered about 2/3 of the bun, and it wasn't that large of a bun. The price of the sandwich was reasonable, even by Sullivan County standards. Some of the appetizers were overpriced, so I didn't order one. This is where the off-season remark comes in. I'm not sure if some of these failures are just because they don't bother with the niceties in the winter, saving their energy for the city money that won't be driving up for a couple of months, but it felt like they (he) was just phoning it in for the season. I'll give it another chance in the summer, when maybe they'll have specials and a livelier atmosphere.

We had a great meal complete with live entertainment at the Pickled Owl. This restaurant serves a variety of NY beers on draft (a must for us while traveling), and offers a variety (read: more than one) vegetarian and vegan menu options! However we were disappointed to learn that some menu items were “out” or not available during our visit. In addition, our table service was under the care of the bartender. As you can imagine, this was quite a tall ask, and we were left waiting (and thirsty!) for a bit longer than we like. Of course, we know that staffing issues are a problem everywhere, so I would not hold this too strongly against the Pickled Owl.

Google
I cannot say enough about this amazing place and wonderful family-friendly establishment. It's a gastropub and many might not know what that means if you look up on their website about them you will understand what a gastropub is and what they are trying to achieve with their food wine and spirits carefully created, heartfeltly made delectable Delights that your palette just wants to savor. The owners are local to the area this is their way of giving back and supporting their community and wanting others to have a great experience of dining and entertainment locally right at your back door. It's a place to come to that is upscale yet homie all at the same time which isn't easy to achieve. Its well-appointed and ahead of the Curve for the area. They have the most amazing events functions and gatherings and weekly activities that should not be missed like chives open mic typically on the fourth Thursday of every month. Chai is always seeking local talents so stop by on a fourth Thursday and bless everyone with your talents and gifts! And if you aren't quite an adult yet but you're 16 and over she has opened up her open mic to give back to the youth! So get off of that High School auditorium stage and check out what it's like to be an actual venue;) And if you want more information about Chai's open mic and the restaurant of course itself please give the Pickled owl a call and find out more & get Chai's number. And did I say that they were well-appointed, uncomparable food, an amazing selection of an array wine beer and spirits, excellent amenities, a loving staff that understands the meaning of customer service and owners that are passionate about their community and how they serve their love to those that come through the door, outdoor seating in a wonderful town that has other things to offer like movies yoga dance it's just all-around good out there in Hurleyville New York! Check it out! You will be mad at yourself if you don't!

1st lets start with the fun fact that they've been here for 5 years & I never knew about this beautiful soul of a restaurant. My Sissy & I came here to have a sipping sissy's sunday! It's a breath of fresh air the food was amazing. Tony was even more of a delight, she made us feel like family. The rose quartz stones on the tables just exuded pure happiness and good vibrations. Very cozy and great for family dinners. Beautiful beautiful place. I will be back with my 🐝ff next time. Thank you for the southern hospitality in upstate new york!

Yelp
Stopped by on our way to the city from finger lakes. Service was friendly! Nice menu I was so hungry that I forgot to take pictures. Best thing - special veggie burger (amazing patty)! They have a nice plate called skillet as well. Their side of sausage felt like they made it onsite with fresh stuff. Coffee could have been better! They have a decent beer selection as well. Decor is interesting :)

Yelp
Great food, cool place overall. We sat at the bar. Will be back! Driven by many times, and so glad we finally stopped in.

Yelp
Ladies, leave your good clothes and purses at home. We were a party of 3 on Friday evening, and the waitress spilled my entire pint of beer on top of my purse. To make matters worse, it was an expensive designer bag that I use when I go out. I barely got an apology, and she said I "guess" I will get you another beer. Most certainly a replacement beer was due, at the very least. A more senior waitress offered a small apology about spilling on table, but no acknowledgement from anyone that my bag was soaked entirely. No help cleaning it. Nothing provided to clean bag. Reaction from staff was so bizarre and off putting. They simply didn't care.

Yelp
Put this on a T-shirt: Mo and Terrence rocked! The ambiance was perfectly warm and delightful (loved the blues). The service was charming and professional. The food was delicious with a creative twist. If I lived within an hour of the place, I'd become a regular in an instant!

Yelp
Food was ok. Not great. But steak ordered medium rare came out well done. The three burgers ordered differently server told us we needed to figure out who ordered what when they arrived at the table. And a burger came out without bacon ($2.50 upcharge) when told not to bother server came out with a single slice of bacon on a plate. When told again it was not needed as I already started eating she told us "it's too late I already brought it out". Then when a server cleared our plates and took the check our server had no idea where our check or credit cards were. No plans to return here.

Yelp
A little gem of a place. Very good veggie burger, phenomenal fries, solid live music playing, and a great drink list.

Yelp
I like the atmosphere at the Pickled Owl, plus the staff are always very friendly and helpful. They check on your meal without hovering, which is nice. I like that the restaurant is spacious and you don't feel cramped with other customers squeezed around your table. There are also clean bathrooms. The food is decent, but I wouldn't say it's exceptional. The choices are somewhat limited but there's enough variety. My cousin and I liked our burgers, which were pretty meaty and freshly made. I also liked that I could get a salad instead of fries for a side.

Yelp
WOW!!! The food at this little restaurant is absolutely delicious!!! It's a little hidden gem in a small, sleepy, upstate town...but BAMMM, this place hits all the right spots!!! The pickled eggs and seasonal pickle dish was drool worth! The egg was nice, has a good tough, springy exterior and perfect sour, puckered lips inducing goodness. The chicken liver pate was beyond perfect. The deviled eggs did not disappoint. I'd come back here just for the drinks and those snacks alone! The entrees were equally yummy and huge portions. We over-ordered and over-ate. Probably should have stopped before we were physically uncomfortable and had to unbutton some pants...but the food was so good. Definitely belly busting quality!!!

Yelp
Had one of the best meals I've ever experienced in the Catskills. Loved that the menu was strong in veggie options. We ordered a seasonal radish salad with cheese and pecans that was perfectly dressed. I took a risk and ordered the beet burger - Amazing taste and texture! We gobbled up the yummy fries that came with. Service was excellent. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Good food and service was rlly friendly. Portions were surprisingly big so there was enough to take home

Yelp
We used to go here monthly for trivia night. However, the trivia host is one of the rudest people I have encountered in a restaurant. We miss trivia nights but will not return because of her.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere was pleasant. Their offerings are from local suppliers so you get that authentic homemade taste as well as an artisan flare as the chef is a Culinary Graduate. I had the fried calamari which was light, buttery, and crispy, and their aioli dipping sauce gave them a nice zesty touch. I decided to go with their curry chicken sandwich. You can tell as soon as you bite into their tender cut of chicken that the smooth taste of curry comes through in the curry mayo and a nice soft brioche bun holds it all together. It all around proved to be a decent value for a quick lunch if you're in the area. I recommend this spot if you're looking for a nice quiet spot to bring your friends for lunch.

Yelp
Loved this little spot! Such delicious food. With gluten free items clearly marked and GF buns for burgers on hand! (Just wish they had a separate fryer for GF fries!) but the food was amazing and the chocolate mousse dessert was to die for. Just delicious. And they happen to be next door to a park which was great for kids who can't sit still to wait for food to be cooked. It was a win-win!!

Yelp
Had a very odd dinner here a few weeks ago. First, we walked in without a reservation and there were 3 tables seated. We were told it'd be a 20 minutes wait for a table. When we requested a table outside, we were told it'd be an hour wait. We were seated 2 minutes later outside and there were 2 empty tables besides. OK... I asked a few basic questions to the server, ie what is the difference between your 2 veggie burgers? What are the current toppings on your deviled eggs? She couldn't answer any of them. Then, for a gastropub with a relatively extensive beer selection, she couldn't remember or pronounce the name of Weihenstephaner. On to the food, deviled eggs were fine, veggie burger's flavor was good but it was extremely dry and crumbled out of the bun. The fish and chips-chips were not good and the fish was dry. Another thing to note is that the patio is absolutely plagued by flies. Like, an unnatural amount. They were constantly swarming around the table and landing on us and it was extremely unpleasant. Another table moved inside for this reason. I'd give this place a definite pass!

X B.

Yelp
The pickle doll was given to us as a place that we should definitely try form the table it did not disappoint it was beyond our expectations I would highly recommend anyone to try it

Victoria C.

Yelp
An absolute gem!! When you walk in your first impression is "Ok, this looks like it's going to be good" then you look around and realize that a sense of humor was added to the place and that's when you realize it's going to be great. My husband and I ordered a couple of glasses of wine and began to review the menu options. The servers are so friendly and took the time to answer all our questions about the menu and to offer suggestions as well. The menu is comprised of fresh local items and changes often. We had the deviled eggs, the caprese stack and in order to save room for dessert we split the vegan gnocchi. The eggs were topped with wonderful little tidbits which balanced well with the well seasoned filling. The caprese had a balsamic drizzle which I loved and my husband thought was too sweet. But the gnocchi...the gnocchi...of my goodness..the gnocchi!!!! The pasta was tender and seasoned to perfection, the accompanying vegetables were exquisite, the light sauce added just the right touch. We were so sad when it was gone. This was perhaps the most perfect gnocchi dish I have ever had. My husband considered ordering a second, but we had wanted to try dessert. We had the apple pie. The crust was amazing, typically I eat the filling and leave the crust treating it like the wrapping that it is. This was a different story it was so tasty and the apple pieces were just the right amount of firm. The pie was topped with a generous topping a sweet crumble. The only problem with this restaurant is the distance from my house, so perhaps if you could consider opening a second location in Melbourne.....

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in the Catskills. Stopped by for a Saturday night dinner. Staff was fantastic wearing silly t shirts with negative Yelp reviews on them. They have a great local beer menu so we both went with something on tap. Started with the deviled eggs and house made pretzel. Both were fantastic. My wife had the gnocchi which was perfectly prepared and a great portion. I ordered the brisket special. The brisket was perfectly prepared and super moist and no knife needed! Came with a sides of macaroni salad and a cucumber salad. Both fantastic. Desert was a house made trifle with cookies and vanilla pudding. I wanted to lick the glass it came in but my wife wouldn't let me. Just a fantastic experience and they never disappoint!!!!

Yelp
Wonderful meals! Desiree was an amazing waitress. We had a food allergy and she was so helpful! It was another great meal. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Always a great time. Sit outside. Brunch is my favorite. Spicey honey! The decor is also lovely.

Yelp
My absolute favorite place for beer in the area. We went last night to enjoy some outdoor seating. Everything was awesome: service, food/drinks, and ambiance. The outdoor tables are set up nicely and they're all spaced out comfortably. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. We all had a great night. A seriously great beer selection and specials every weekend... yum

Yelp
Terrific restaurant in Hurleyville NY. Fresh interesting tastes . Beers galore, local brews featured. Brisket melts in your mouth beet salad crazy good brownie with ice cream.

Yelp
Wow, oh wow. The best and most underrated restaurant i've ever been to in my life. Staff did an outstanding job and were very nice and welcoming. Had many gluten free options as well and the staff was extremely accommodating. Went back multiple times during my stay nearby. Would 100% recommend anyone in the area to make sure you try the Pickled Owl

Yelp
Had a great meal here. I started with the homemade pretzel followed by the trout as my entree. The pretzel was delicious and the fish was perfectly cooked, though the purple grain (I forget exactly what it was - some type of rice) was a little underdone. Still, the fish was amazing and I'd definitely recommend it. I also had a vodka gimlet, but it tasted like it had some sort of artificial or maybe just very cloying syrup in it. Friendly service and live music some nights!

Chris G.

Yelp
Had brunch here yesterday and really enjoyed it; this is a gastropub, not a five start restaurant, so keep that in mind when setting your expectations. For a pub, the experience was unexpectedly enjoyable; the locally procured and made-to-order food, the craft beer on tap, the coffee, the atmosphere (casual, comfortable, clean) and the service. Go with the family or a group of friends. I highly recommend the fried chicken and waffles. And please be patient and generous with your servers, no matter where you happen to go. Our server was probably new, but we met each other halfway and guess what, it worked out great. Just like the rest of life :).
google avatar

Yelp
Delivered again. Delicious brisket. Long beer list, even if they were out of goose island. Deviled eggs, which are not on enough menus. Wings were good. Service was good. We were greeted at the door with a smile. Wouldn't think a gastropub up here would have a reason to be great, but it is!!

Yelp
Not impressed with the food at all. Service was ok nice atmosphere BUT food was not good burger tasted "funny" overdone medium ‍ fries were cold the blue cheese I added tasted like ammonia the bun was stale and the appetizer was not worth eating. The Cesar salad had way to much dressing with a weird lemon taste?? Fritter dessert was soggy and way to greasy. All in all maybe a nice place to have a beer. Eat dinner elsewhere!

Yelp
Seems like the rest of the people reviewing this place should stick to the Golden Arches. Good food takes time. First of all, service was on point. Tried the chicken and biscuits, as good as you can get just about anywhere. Cheeseburger was amazing and had a nice beef blend. Now what really got me? Avocado toast - damn that was amazing, if you make it there for brunch make sure to get an order of it for the table. Now as far as the atmosphere, they have a beautiful setup and really well laid out restaurant. If you're in the area, make sure to drop by.

Yelp
Had the Lamb Stew. It was excellent. Pate and Fried Livers also very good. Nice place. Only would have been better if it was nice weather and could eat outside.

Yelp
We had dinner on their deck during a break from the thunderstorms, and it was delicious! The house-made pretzel with cheddar cheese sauce was so good - the sauce was clearly made with real cheddar cheese, not bright orange stuff, and I wanted to lick the container it came in it was so good. The seasonal pickles were great fun - my favorite was the pickled eggs! Speaking of eggs, the home-made tater tots with a duck egg on top was lovely. Basically everything was good, the waitress was very friendly and helpful, the beer was delish, and it was fun to watch the groundhog as we ate! Will definitely go back.

Yelp
Again, I'm torn on a review when the food is spectacular but the service is poor. If our service was better (as in showed up to take our order, drop it off and never returned) then this would be an absolute 5 star review. 3 adults, one very hungry toddler on an early Saturday night. Seated promptly. Menus are diverse but limited. Appetizer, drinks and mains all placed at the same time. 40 minutes later, appetizer come out. The deviled eggs are scrumptious. Tiny but mighty. Then the aggravating waiting game begins. We have a HANGRY toddler on our hands. We're waiting, we wait some more, we actually get up and walk down the street with the ravenous toddler and fill him up on Cheerios and goldfish, come back to the table and wait some more. 38 minutes from the time our singular appetizer comes out, one hour and 18 minutes after placing our order, our main dishes arrive. If your food wasn't so freaking delicious, I would have table flipped and left. However, the food was exquisite. The hanger steak was cooked to perfection, the chimmichurri sauce was devine. The sausage platter and homemade kraut, fantastic! The mac and cheese was toddler approved! He finished his meal before we did. He loved your fresh carrots as well. The biscuits are buttery and decadent. Ugh, we ate like Kings. It was so good. The rosemary water was refreshing and a life saver because the waitress never came back to refill the beer or tea. I wanted dessert so badly because of the mains were this good, the sweets had to be top notch too. For shame, we were never asked about dessert. We were dropped off a check instead. I did see a chocolate pecan pie or cake at the table next to us, they were literally swooning over it. I wish. I don't know if I should blame the kitchen or the server but I'm blaming someone. I definitely would not bring my toddler here again due to the long waits. There's only so much tableside entertainment I can provide for an 18 month old waiting for food. Fix the kitchen or fix the service. Whatever it is. Your food is stellar and you don't need service issues screwing it up.

Yelp
An Update on the Pickled Owl! Just got home from a very enjoyable evening at The Pickled Owl. Attached are the pictures of the yummy food we had. There is one plate which needs a bit of explaining. They are sausage stuffed onions and they were DELICIOUS!! Everything was yummy. In addition we had the pleasure of finally getting to hear a local talent live. He was a youngling by the name of Julian Giamo. Very talented. A few of his songs brought me back to Billy Joel concerts in the 70's, back when Billy could still REALLY sing with passion. That's the word I'm looking for regarding tonight's performance. The kid sings with passion and projects his song without "screaming" as so many young musicians feel they have to do nowadays. Definitely a pleasure to listen to. All in all another pleasant evening enjoying what Sullivan County has to offer!

Yelp
Had our 50th high school reunion here a few weeks ago. I can't say enough about how wonderful Evan and Brynn were in making the evening such a success. Brynn went above and beyond by providing beautiful wild flowers for each table as well as organizing the room to hold all 80 of us. But.... it was the food!!! So original and so good... not your standard fare. Everyone raved! An hour cocktail hour with delicious, interesting pass arounds to a buffet dinner of fried chicken, stuffed pork loin, blackened catfish and homemade apple cake for dessert. The staff was helpful and friendly and the evening went off without a hitch. This Saturday night dinner was part of a wonderful reunion weekend and I couldn't be happier that we chose Pickled Owl. Thanks again Brynn and Evan. Warmly, Brenda L.

Yelp
Food was delicious, but expensive. The staff was super friendly but not very attentive. I was part of one of three tables at the restaurant and it still took a long time to get service, and they took some dirty plates off the table but left the rest for most of the meal. Loved the decor and the comfy wall seating with all the pillows! Overall a pleasant experience, but could have been better.

Yelp
To say that everything is Great may sound like an exaggeration...but its not. Everything is great! The entire town of Hurleyville is Amazing and this place has great staff, great food and an overall excellent atmosphere! You must try it!!

Yelp
Went for the first time, last night (won't be the last, as I was checking out all of the dishes coming out of the kitchen, that meatloaf looked delish! & many are on my must try list!) I had the house blend beef burger with cheddar & bacon. The burger, OMG!! Cooked perfectly medium as ordered, juicy & had so much flavor that the ketchup was almost an insult to it, so did not use. This may be the first burger that I did NOT put ketchup on! The bacon could have been crispy, though was still delicious. Fries, also, crispy & had so much flavor on their own that they needed no ketchup, either. So many more things to try maybe spaghetti squash puttanesca, meatloaf or the veggie burger. The apps such as deviled eggs, jerky, calamari, meatballs, chicken liver pate' & orange sesame cauliflower are all on my must try list, as well!

Yelp
Not sure where to even start. I was told my takeout order would be 20 mins, took almost 50 minutes. I should have known when I walked in the cooks were outside smoking and I was the only one besides 3 women at the bar. It was almost $90 for my fiance and I for dinner. Wouldn't be a big deal if the food was good. It was horrible. Everything was overly salty (and we like salt). The fried chicken, which should be salty had ZERO seasoning or flavor. The portions were insanely small. 3 deviled eggs (half of an egg). There was also a few hairs in the mac and cheese. We ended up throwing most of the food out it was that bad. Even when the bartender noticed I was waiting almost an hour she didn't even offer me a drink. They also forgot to bag some of my items and if I didn't check I would have had to make a trip back. We are far from picky but this was a MAJOR let down. Went again with 3 other people and had to send the burger back because it was barely cooked and the waitress felt horrible.

Yelp
Oohh, how I DREAM of The Pickled Owl's fried chicken, biscuits n' gravy with poached eggs!!! In my humble opinion, this venue in Hurleyville, NY is the CHAMPION of biscuits and gravy!!! This DELECTABLE venue in the heart of the Hudson Valley is an absolutely heart warming surprise. Unexpectedly spacious, and with quaint, additional patio seating, The Pickled Owl does not disappoint - ever! Absolutely every item on the menu is made in house, from their coffee cream to their bread loaves! Pictured: The champion of biscuits and gravy... (with poached eggs and fried chicken on top!) Head over to @jet_set_sass on Instagram for more foodporn!

Yelp
Extremely disappointed with service and food quality. We normally love it here but last night we waited over 20 minutes to order drinks and appetizers and then it took forever for them to arrive and the order was not correct for our table. Then it took forever for our dinner order to be taken and when the food arrived it was kinda warm and again not the quality it used to be. No one apologized and the staff acted like they didn't care! We will not be back and we will no longer recommend to others!

Yelp
The last time I reviewed this place was about 8 months ago (when they first opened) And wasnt crazy about the place. I have to say they found their niche and are doing great. In short when I first came here months ago it was very hit and miss. Some dishes left you wondering what you were paying for. But when my husband went to give it another try we were very happy with everything we got. Pretzel with a cheesy beer sauce, the friend chicken, the new york strip steak and the PB&J pie. Loved it all. Our server also helped me pick a beer when I wasnt sure what I wanted. I think it was called "6 points". It was a coffee beer (I had 2). Very good. We will be back

Yelp
We love this place. Our kids order the Chicken and Waffles every time and we enjoy the Caeser Salad, burgers etc. Beer menu is excellent and the brunch Bloody Mary's are top notch. Toni our server rocked. She is fast knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
2 chicken sandwich 26.00 1 coffee 2.50 1 coke 2.50 Subtotal 33.48 Food overpriced for this Hurleyville location. Fries were over fried and the sandwich was not big deal, just big that you can't even give it a good bite. Almost $40 for this meal and that's not including tip. Now I'm not cheap when it comes to food but you paid good for something good. Went to this place with no expectations and came out with great disappointment. Yesterday my wife and I went to Panera and both had a nice sandwich and soup plus drinks with choice of chips or bread for $25 and of course it was delicious. Not to mention the location. Like someone in a movie once said, first you try then you trust. Well we tried and we're not going back.

Yelp
The owners of Pickled Owl are doing everything correctly for small restauranteurs. They change the specials out every weekend and actually post them to their Facebook page well ahead of time. They're always updating their social media page and menus, and this is so helpful to customers because it is a restaurant operating in real-time. There's nothing better than being able to check what specials a place is running ahead of time to see if you're in the mood for it. But the food is good, really good. So you'll probably be in the mood for it. The owner even replies to all feedback received online, which I've never seen before. It shouldn't come as a surprise that they take such meticulous care of these very fine details, though, when you see how beautifully their restaurant space is designed. I just love this place. I dream about the beet salad, homemade pretzel, and chicken liver pate daily. The fried chicken is probably on par with the best you've ever had. It's so pretty and welcoming and has such positive vibes that you'll spend hours actually sitting down to talk and enjoy a meal, which is an experience that's gotten lost in other places. GO HERE!

Yelp
I always enjoy the food and company when I'm in town. This time, I had the Chicken Liver Pate and Pecan Trout. I'm a huge fan of pate and love sampling it whether I can. Pickled Owl's chicken liver is perfect. The trout was equally delicious and just the right portion size. The atmosphere here is relaxing, either inside or out. This gastropub is a gem and a must when visiting the Catskills.

Yelp
I used to love picked owl, I've been going there from time to time since 2016 when I moved upstate and I must say this is the worse experience I've had in any restaurant in years. The service was forgetful. We had a six top which included 2 babies. Anyways we ordered two burgers, two fried chicken and pork chops. It took an hour for the runner to run the food to the table. We also ordered one risotto and a calamari as apps and even that took a while to get to the table, so in all maybe an hour and a half. Why? Because other tables were getting serviced and food were brought to them at a steady pace even two tables that came in after us. So during that hour waiting on our entrees, about 8-10 mins before our food came to the table the runner came up to me and said that she sorry and the food will be out soon, it's just that it's a big table and trying to teach me the ropes of how restaurants are. In my mind I'm like lady why are you patronizing me? I work in the restaurant business, I've been in the restaurant business for nearly 10 years. There were 4 other tables in the restaurant, 2 of those got into the restaurant after we did and got served their entrees and dessert before we could of gotten our entrees. We didn't order anything that would of kept the Chefs busy for eons, we didn't have a 12 top big party nor a restaurant that are seating over 100 people and kitchen getting ticket orders after ticket orders. We should of gotten our order within 25-30 minutes, that happened all the other times we've been at the pickled owl in the past. 30 mins at the very most. All the other customers today got their stuff within 30 mins when I was there. So what changed today? This is how you lose loyal customers and as for the waitress, she didn't seem interested at all to serve us. Didn't check on us for God knows how long, at one point I had to ask my Mother, how many times the waitress see if all is well comparing to other tables, in which a few seconds later, she came to our table to ask if we are good? Anyways the food came out but by then we were fed up especially since my niece didn't get her fried chicken that she wanted, she got chicken fingers instead or something that look like chicken fingers and by brother pointed it out and she didn't seem apologetic about the matter, she didn't attempt to bring the food back in the kitchen for the chefs to change it, if anything she was more or less disinterested. So my brother let it go, and did she attempt to change the fried chicken to the whatever my niece got on the bill? NOOOOO, she charged the two fried chicken and not the other thing. I'm not asking for the waiter to waitress to bombard us every other minute, just to be fair with it. Because the service and attitude was piss poor. The ambiance is great as ever and the food is luscious as ever but you guys gotta hire better people for your customers satisfaction because there is no host or hostess in picked owl so the first person customers see are the waitress' and they dictate how your night and service gonna be and if they don't be as courteous to your liking then y'all gonna start losing customers as there are plenty more restaurant within Sullivan County now comparing to five years ago. As a server you have to hustle and satisfy the customers needs, not saying to ass kiss now but you have to ensure that the customer is satisfied otherwise why get tipped? None of us felt that way today so I gave her a penny, which is still too much. The Picked Owl owners can turn their establishment into a buffet and let us self serve on our own but Evan and Brynn opened a gastropub for a reason and they need servers as much as we do as customers. I hope they read my feedback, hold a staff meeting so this won't ever happen again because this is asinine. I used to wait tables too and I had to hustle for mine every service otherwise, I'd be going home tip less. I love this place and tonight is deterring me from ever going back. Two stars for Ambience and Food only.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place accidentally and we are glad we did. We were heading home from Walton and decided to find a non chain restaurant on our way to Brooklyn. The name is what got my attention. I love pickles and I love owls, so why the heck not?! The time we came, it was busy and we were warned that our food may be delayed, we didn't care... even with a 6 month old in tow. There was some type of Porsche club meetup. Even though the place was full, there was seating and we still had the option of sitting outside. We opted for the outside. Unfortunately, our neighbors were obnoxious but we didn't hold grudges against them. After all, they were owners of a Porsche, that gives them the "OK", right? We actually found them comical and it was free entertainment. Despite being told that our orders may be delayed, everything came out on time. We really didn't have anywhere to go and the menu looked amazing. You MUST try their beer bread. BEST. EFFIN. BREAD. EVER. Oh and the honey butter? Addictive! Dangerously addictive. We had the brunch menu (I actually forgot today was Saturday) and its very different from their regular menu but their beer selection is very wide and different from other gastropubs. For entrees, my husband had their cheeseburger. He claimed that it was the best he has ever eaten. I stole a bit and he is right, it was the best. The cheese was melted perfectly and the bun tasted sooooo different, in a good way. The fries were just like the menu says, crispy. I am not a big French Fry fan but he kept on tapping my hand away. I am THAT wife. I had the Chicken and Waffles. OMG. First off, best waffle to exist. Cooked perfectly and it was crispy. The chicken was good. Very tender, not oily, and the skin was crisped to perfection. The syrup was perfectly distributed across the plate and it is NOT your regular syrup. If I could bring a bottle home, I would. There was also a sunny side up fried egg on my plate. I NEVER GET THAT ANYWHERE ELSE! It was all a perfect combo. The only thing that sucked a bit and I get its a pub (family friendly during the day) is that they didn't have much of a selection for kids. Granted my baby is six months and cant eat like a toddler but I would have liked to have given her mashed potatoes. That didn't stop me though. I got creative and asked if I could order a yogurt without all the fancy stuff. Our waitress was awesome and she made it work! Thank you! Now I didn't feel like an ahole eating in front of my daughter delicious food while she stared. Even the yogurt tasted good but then again, you cannot go wrong with Greek yogurt. Wait staff is very friendly and they are on top of you. Despite it being busy, they checked up on us and other tables. The service is superb and the atmosphere is great! Parents, there is a family changing room (YAY!), high chairs, and enough room for strollers (we didn't bring ours). I did mention that we sat outside and it is really nice out there; however, space is limited. There were only 4 or 5 tables but it works. There is even a playground in the back but it was closed due to construction on it. I don't know if it belongs to the restaurant or not but its still cool that something like that is there. I did see a heating lamp for the cold months too. Even though I do not live in the area and we live 3 hours away, it will definitely be our go to spot when we head upstate from the city for a weekend trip. If you haven't visited this place yet and it is on your list, put it to the top of your list. Between the atmosphere itself, the food, and the staff, your visit will be just like mine, perfection.

Yelp
Really good! Relaxed atmosphere. Had really good fried calamari and fried chicken w Mac and cheese. Way too much fried food for me! My fault! It was delicious though!
