"An afternoon pedaling around on the swan boats is what we’d consider a bucket list LA activity. Now, there’s a proper way to fuel up before or after cruising on the lake. Piknik is a tiny, quick-service cafe from The Lonely Oyster people inside the Echo Park boathouse. All ordering is done via kiosk, and the menu involves food designed for sunny park days: fruit salads, build-your-own cheese boxes, lemon crinkle cookies, and our favorite section, smorrebrod (open-faced rye sandwiches topped with fishy things like gravlax, roe, and pickled herring). Somehow they taste even better hanging out on the water-facing patio." - brant cox, sylvio martins

Me and my little family went for a walk at the park and came across this lovely place, it was cold so my son wanted a hot chocolate to keep warm while we walked around the lake, we went in and asked for a hot chocolate, it wasn’t on the menu BUT they went above and beyond to make one for my son, we then learned they are adding it to the menu on Saturday and my son was the first to try it pre-launch. You all have given my son a new core memory and he couldn’t stop telling me how amazingly delicious it was. I snagged a picture after he started devouring it but I tried it as well and it was sooooooooo good. We will definitely be back once it launches and adding this to a weekly tradition of walking around the lake watching the boats and the skyline while drinking a cup of hot chocolate ☕️ Thanks Again 💕 The service, drinks and food were amazing! (Latte I had was so good!)

Google
Great snacks and food, the chocolate chip cookie was excellent. And the latte was delicious too! Definitely a great place to stop when you’re at the lake. I feel like taking a photo of just the bag from my cookie and not the cookie itself was a faux pas but alas, it didn’t last long. Will return soon!

They got Refreshing Teas in here! I heard they recently opened this July. It's nice to finally see a cafe here in Echo Park.

Google
Honestly was blown away by the quality of everything. We got the harvest salad, french fries, pretzel, schnitzel plate and chocolate chip cookie. Very flavorful. The salad was incredible, unexpected flavors and tasty. And we are still raving about the cookie...highly recommend.

Google
The food was really good, staff was super nice. Coffee was high quality. Some prices were a little unreasonable, but it’s LA so not docking them for that. Overall, great vibes and a great addition to the park! Excited for when they start serving beer and wine.

Google
I love Piknik! This is exactly what Echo Park needed! The food is fantastic and the staff is really nice. For anyone complaining about the price, its really not much considering the quality of food and the type of cuisine you're getting. Its not a chicken fingers and fries spot... much more elevated. Seriously amazing and absolutely worth a try. I will be back every time Im in echo park!

Google
Cute spot for being next to such a high traffic tourist area. However, the customer service makes the experience of dining here absolutely miserable. Luckily there’s a lot of fun to be had outside of this poorly operated establishment.

I feel like taking a photo of just the bag from my cookie and not the cookie itself was a faux pas but alas, it didn't last long, and this is the only photo I've got. Yelp
NOTE: Dined in on 7/7/24. Right at the boathouse in Echo Park. In fact, when you get off of your lil swan boat, you're in the cafe! I love the concept of piknik - easy to order off of the tablets or online, all of the food can be enjoyed at some tables/outdoor bar-style seating. If you have any questions, the staff is super friendly, so you have the best of both worlds of choosing to interact with people or just... not haha. They even sell picnic blankets to match the theme/name of the cafe and they're working on obtaining an alcohol license to offer a more intimate dinner experience in the future. Makes sense, as they're currently open to 11pm and that is pretty late for a cozy little spot in Echo Park! The menu contains mostly Scandinavian-influenced brunch items, which is a pleasant surprise as we don't have many places that offer that (destroyer being the most notable spot I can think of). I opted for the gouda bombs, lemon crinkle cookie, and strawberry madeline on a very toasty Sunday. Probably should've tried one of their drinks as well, but maybe next time! Gouda bombs - their version of pao de queijo aka Brazilian cheese bread. If you're unfamiliar with what that is, it's basically a crunchy fried outer layer of crust, with tapioca and cheese mixed together inside to create this somewhat gooey, pleasantly chewy interior. It's one of my favorite snacks, so I had high hopes for this. Unfortunately, the outside wasn't particularly crunchy and the smoked gouda isn't the best fit for the filling here. Gouda is pretty strong in terms of flavor, and normally I love it, but I feel like it's almost a little too savory/salty for pao de queijo. Perhaps if the smokiness came out a bit more, but it was too subtle to balance things out. It comes with a (cheese?) dip, which is puzzling because I'd like to dip it in something that mellows the gouda a bit, not make the entire experience even MORE cheesy. Not sure if I'd get this again, but maybe I'll try the sandwich version of this that they have. Lemon crinkle cookie - This is one of the best cookies I've had in a while. Beautiful slight crunch on the outside, soft with a satisfying bite/chew on the inside, powdered sugar doesn't make it too sweet because the lemon flavor balances it out. I wish I got more of these and I'll definitely grab at least one every time I'm here. This is a must try! Strawberry madeline - Served cold, which is good. Definitely needs to be eaten right away. Nothing too special about this, though. It's a serviceable madeline, but it kinda tastes like a firmer angel's food cake with strawberry preserves/jam as filling. I would prefer more of the strawberry filling, as well. It's a very thin layer in there. Probably wouldn't get again. I'd love to come back to try their other offerings, but for now, I highly recommend going there and getting the lemon crinkle cookies. I'd honestly give this experience a 3.5/5, but I'm rounding up because those darn cookies are just THAT good.

Yelp
Stopped by to get a cup so we can give water to a friend's dog. We were told they couldn't hand out cups unless we bought something. We walked out with a 7 dollar bottle of water.. the employee didn't seem to care all, almost knowingly difficult.

Yelp
Although my latte was solid and flavourful, some things about this spot rubbed me the wrong way. Although ordering via tablets may be convenient, it really takes away from the atmosphere of enjoying coffee (especially while on a walk around echo park). I also couldn't ignore the mold growing on the cabinet food and the napkins and straws being placed BEHIND the pastries!

Jay F.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick snack or meal overlooking the lake + nice design refresh of the boathouse service area. The staff was friendly and helpful. The quiche was the star of the show. Would definitely order again. Cardamom buns were stellar and sticky. Fruit cup was ok. Only disappointments were the gouda bombs which sounded amazing, but were three small bites next to a strangely cold and congealed white sauce for $9. All of us thought there should either be more of them for that price or cheaper, plus not sure what was happening with the sauce. Also, no decaf espresso drinks, sad.

Yelp
Cool place, but the music outside was too loud on Saturday (8/31/24) to the point that the group I was picnicking with on the grass outside couldn't hear one another without shouting. Loved the music selection as well, but was just too loud for a public space, where dogs and kids are supposed to be able to hang out.

Yelp
Went in To check out the menu. Order at a kiosk. Would prefer a person. Menu very limited. One sandwich? Really? Instead just a bunch of cookies/ smoothies etc. Left without ordering anything. How about some real food ?

Yelp
Visited a couple days ago, and they have renovated the space - it looks beautiful and inviting!!! The food and drinks are delicious!!! We ordered the lemon cookie, chocolate chip cookie, vanilla ice cream, mango sorbet, chocolate ice cream and the caramel ice cream, two coffees and some more!!! Everything was spectacular!!! What made the experience even BETTER was PAIGE!! Paige was the one helping us and even recommending we try certain things, everything recommended was a win!! She was the sweetest gal, with the best energy!! The way she worked & gave love to the business made us think she was the owner!! You all there are so blessed to have her on your team! She is the reason we couldn't stop ordering and didn't want to leave. Truly an awesome experience! Offerings and service! The best!!! Don't miss trying!!!!

Yelp
Very bummed this place has moved into the Boathouse, as it is extremely overpriced and they nixed a lot of the fare from the old restaurant. $8 for a lemonade, $7 for a Coke, $18 for a single toast...no breakfast sandwiches or lunch food. Just expensive bougie coffees and buns, which makes sense now that I know it's owned by the equally expensive Lonely Oyster. Whoever put this place in here is totally missing the mark for a multigenerational park in a historically working class neighborhood. Not only that but you have to order from a screen and can only pay by card. They didn't have half the items in stock. Save your money and buy from the street vendors outside the park. Hoping this place leaves one their lease is up and will be replaced with someone more suitable for the demographic who visits this park.

Yelp
So good! And the perfect ambiance! Can't wait to visit again soon to enjoy the meatballs again!

Yelp
We LOVE piknik, it's exactly what swan lake needed. The vibes are immaculate. Easy to order, friendly faces, delicious bites, and even picnic blankets if you didn't bring yours - they literally thought of everything. The fries, wagyu schnitzel parmy, pressed juices, and lemon cookies were among our favs. We're anxiously awaiting their alcohol license because literally the only thing that could make this cutie little LA experience better would be a glass of Lumos Chiquita Rose. And the music is the sweetest touch. Guys, it's the easiest, practically pre packaged day date! Don't miss out.

Yelp
Chef dom rocks with everything that he does! Love music is great addition . Support the small businesses during these challenging times

Yelp
The homemade marshmallow in their hot cocoa is amazing. Lovely service and it's right next to the swan boat rides!

Yelp
Well, for one, I just had a cappuccino with oak milk. The service and coffee were excellent, but dealing with the menu setup was odd to me. Technology for no reason. But it is in a beautiful park. I was thinking of getting ice cream with a cone because the photo looked great on their online menu, but I discovered I had to pay a dollar extra for the cone, and I thought, 'No.' at first I thought ice cream with cone is $7. But when I got to the point of paying, they charged more with the cone. And there is no information about the ice cream itself. So it's expensive. Nevertheless, I hope they succeed here. And I will check the rest of their menu.

Emily B.

Yelp
Love having this staple in the neighborhood! Great items, no notes.

Yelp
Yummy coffee, pastries, and enjoyed the Grav Lox toast. Definitely recommend for a nice way to spend a local LA day.

Yelp
I never do this but it needs to be said. The woman working today 10/26 at 12:45 shocked me with her behavior. I'm 38 weeks pregnant and asked for a cup of water and was then going to order food. It's very hot today and I was not feeling well and was in need of water. She said "I'm making coffee right now". I asked if I could please just buy the bottle of water sitting next to her and she said you have to go to the machine and do that. I've worked in service and I can't fathom treating a pregnant person this way. Really sad that this is how we treat each other today. Do better please.

Tess K.

Yelp
Fun yet chill ambience, great strong coffee, cool decor. Staff was friendly and helpful!

Laura M.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful person behind the counter answered some questions for us, and we had no problem ordering at the kiosk. We loved the lemon cookie and the grilled gouda with fries. A lovely area to sit set aside just for the cafe patrons was great too. Made our trip to ride the swan boats at the lake perfect!

Troy E.

Yelp
Loved this place! Huge portions. I had the potatoes and couldn't finish them. Meatballs (3) was more than plenty. (They also do 6.). Friendly staff. Looking forward to coming back!

Sven K.

Yelp
I was looking so forward to the Cafe in the Boathouse re-opening. We walk our dogs around the beautiful lake several times a week. I used to stop by and have a coffee and croissant, with our oldest dog loving to get a tiny morsel. - Now I tried the place once, and not again since. The coffee counter room has no tables anymore, and you must order on a tablet on the wall. That makes the room as inviting as a Greyhound Bus Terminal! If I stop for a coffee, I don't want to "work" and have to figure out how to order on a digital screen. I just want to go up to the counter and order, and then sit down, see other people sip their brew,, and relax like one does in a cafe. - Echo Park is a classic LA community gathering place, with people from all walks of life, why try to make this a hip "Swedish Delicatessen" eatery? It is sad to see that the great "picnic tables outside" idea has only one party sitting there, often none, and nobody on the barstool counters outside. A failed "high concept" that ignores the needs of the community.
