"Pineapple King has brought their titular pineapple buns to Fremont. This East Bay outpost is located in a strip mall and is take-out-only. They’re serving the same menu of pineapple buns, egg tarts, and mooncakes. " - Ricky Rodriguez

"San Francisco’s popular Pineapple King Bakery has made the leap across the bridge, opening a second location in Fremont. The bestseller is, of course, the pineapple bun or bolo bao, which regularly sells out at its Irving Street location. Go with your heart on which version to get. Options include custard-filled versions and even a barbecue pork pineapple bun. But if you’re looking for some direction, it’s hard to go wrong with a pandan coconut butter or guava butter pineapple bun." - Dianne de Guzman

"Anyone who has walked by Irving Street’s Pineapple King bakery knows the hype is real as fans often line up on the street to wait for the crunchy-topped or cream-filled buns. Now the Chronicle reports those sought-after bolo bao, or pineapple buns, are for sale at the business’s second outpost at 6827 Warm Springs Boulevard as of October 27." - Lauren Saria

San Francisco’s Line-Inducing Chinese Bakery Pineapple King Is Expanding to the East Bay - Eater SF

"Walk anywhere in the general vicinity of Irving and 20th Ave. and you’re guaranteed to see plenty of smiling people carrying big pastry boxes full of still-warm treats from Pineapple King. The reason is simple: the Chinese bakery in the Sunset is churning out fantastic baked goods that are well worth waiting in the line down the block for. The bakery’s titular pineapple buns—named for their crumbly, textured golden topping (not the fruit)—are the main attraction here. There are almost 20 varieties of pineapple buns alone on the menu. Some are injected with sweet fillings, like ube or mango custard, and others are sliced in half and stuffed with a glistening slab of butter. Each is about the size of a semi-flattened baseball and baked fresh daily. One bite into a squishy bun and you’ll slip right into a dreamlike, butter-induced trance—which will probably inspire you to hop back in line and grab a few more for later. So just do yourself a favor and order a bunch the first time around. photo credit: Erin Ng Pineapple buns aside, plenty of other things at Pineapple King are also fantastic. Like the soft, milky hot dog buns, and the refreshing mango pudding that tastes like a sunny summer picnic in a spoon. The counter-service bakery is cash-only, so plan accordingly. Or you can order ahead and pay online, which helps you avoid the line, too. If you want to make a day out of a visit here, load up your box, take it to nearby Golden Gate Park, and enjoy eating some of the city’s best pastries on a patch of grass. Food Rundown photo credit: Erin Ng Pineapple Bun Soft and squishy with the signature crumbly topping, the pineapple bun here reigns supreme. There are tons of flavors, from ube or matcha to the less conventional pepperoni and cheese—but when in doubt, the plain one never disappoints. photo credit: Erin Ng Pineapple Bun With Guava Butter This is our go-to. At night, we count pineapple buns with guava butter instead of sheep. It comes with a centimeter-thick slab of pink butter that isn’t too sweet or fruity, and melts right into the bun. photo credit: Erin Ng Hot Dog Bun A classic, perfectly done. photo credit: Erin Ng Mango Pineapple Puff If you want a pineapple bun that’s on the dessert-y side, try this one. It’s filled with gooey mango custard that oozes out with every bite. Mango Pudding Like we said above, summer in a spoon. The silky, creamy pudding is especially refreshing on a warm day." - Julia Chen

Google
Pretty good pineapple buns. They have an extensive list of pineapple buns with different kinds of fillings and various flavors of butter. Bought half a dozen of different kinds and they came out warm. There's no interior area to sit down. You order at the counter and wait outside the shop for your order to be ready.

Google
Delicious, fresh, warm pineapple buns. I got the mini flight with a variety of fillings. I also ordered one kerry gold pineapple bun. I brought them home and did a light toast until the slab of butter melted. It is sweet and salty, soft in the inside with a slight crunch in the outside. So good!!!

Google
It’s one of my go-to spots. Matcha puff, guava butter puff are absolutely delicious and have become my all-time favorites. Fresh, unique, full of flavor - highly recommend!!

Google
Fresh and delicious pineapple buns! Plus affordable! My favorite was the classic butter one. Their honkong style milk tea was not that good though. They have self-service kiosk as well as a counter. They don't have that many seatings outdoor.

I usually see this place jam packed on the weekends and decided to swing by on a weekday, what a difference. It was a great experience!!!! The treats were yummy and not too sweet. The guy at the cash register was friendly and helpful, along with the people cooking. The price was very reasonable and inviting to get more. Overall10/10 all around ✅⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Google
Overall, good! We’ve never tried the SF location but heard from others how great Pineapple King is. We were heading to Osaka marketplace and saw the line for Pineapple King. We’ve been eyeing the place and didn’t even realize today is soft opening! Did a spontaneous stop. What we thought was one to two hours wait ended up being 3 hours so definitely be prepared. We got in line around 2:50pm, ordered 4:30pm, received 5:45pm. 😬 Our favorite is the HK milk tea. We are huge fans of HK milk tea and this place now is going to be our favorite for it. Hopefully can order online in the future so we can more easily pick it up 😅 Next, my favorite would be the pineapple bun with butter. Beware though, it’s a lot of butter 😂 but it tasted heavenly while eating it. I did wish more of the buns were warmer as most were on the cold side / barely warm as we got the box. Husband enjoyed the salted egg pineapple bun. Daughter liked the original pineapple bun (no extra fancy flavors). The pandan coconut pineapple bun was pretty good too, maybe because I love those two flavors. Husband did like the guava one but I wasn’t sure I liked it combined with pineapple bun. Maybe because I’ve only ever had plain pineapple buns so not used to all these other flavors in it. We would want to go back and give it a try. Some flavors sold out so still want to try out the sesame one, etc. If anything, definitely want to go back for the HK milk tea. Hopefully, lines will die down and/or more efficient ordering and packaging process. Place accept credit cards 😊

I arrived at 12 and there were already 30 to 40 people waiting. The self order line is actually slower because the ordering system is not very good. It doesn’t allow you to specify number of buns so you have to add multiple times if you want to order the same item. It also kicks you back to the first screen after you add to cart. So you get confused after couple swipes. The normal pineapple bun is okay, not as exceptional as you will expect giving all the hype, and not much different than other bakeries in Oakland or San Francisco Chinatown such as 拿破崙. We like the specialty matcha, red bean, cream puff, and mochi buns. One thing is one of the bun as almond topping which is not shown in pictures online. My daughter is allergic to nuts so she can’t have any.

Yelp
I highly recommend ordering online in advance to make your visit as efficient as possible. My go-to items are the pandan coconut bun and the spam & egg pineapple bun. The pandan coconut bun captures the pandan flavor perfectly--fragrant, sweet, and delicious. The spam & egg pineapple bun is savory perfection, with a great balance of flavors and textures. I've tried a good portion of their menu, and these two stand out as my personal favorites. While their BBQ pork bun is just okay (you can definitely find better elsewhere), their other sweet buns are quite good. It really comes down to finding the flavor that suits your taste best. I'll be back!

Otto L.

Yelp
They may have arguably the best butter buns in the Bay Area, but I was somewhat disappointed. Yes, they do have a variety of buns. The buns come out warm. For the original butter buns, they are just not as good as the ones in some HK cafes in SoCal. Btw, they don't have napkins. It's best to eat the buns warm. Make sure to bring your own napkins

Yelp
We've been to the SF location, and I'm happy to say the Fremont location is just as great, so we won't have to travel all the way to SF just to get the buns! We ordered the: -butter supreme box - comes with 4 minis, regular, chocolate, salted egg, and guava -two custard buns - matcha tart - croissant egg tart I really like the mini size, it's about 1/3 the size of a regular one as you can see in one of the pictures. It also lets you try different flavors. However, out of the flavors, we like the guava the most. We didn't really care for the salted egg even though it's usually a flavor we really like. I think the chocolate pudding tasted better not heated. We also didn't really care much for the matcha tart. Our favorite is the pandan! I love how they have heating directions on the side of the box. Put it in an air fryer or oven at 325 degrees for 4-8 minutes. 4-5 if you just want the outside warmed, and 6-8 if you want it toasted. Also depends on your air fryer/oven. But we love how the top is similar to a melon pan. TLDR: we would get the pandan, guava, custard buns and the croissant egg tarts again!

Amanda T.

Yelp
So good!! It comes out soft and warm :) I recommend trying anything salted egg! and the original butter!! Also get the bbq pork bun for a savory snack

Valerie Y.

Yelp
The pineapple buns here are SO good! We used the self serve kiosk (about a 5 minute wait) and got our buns within 10 minutes of waiting. It's all outdoors so be prepared to stand around. We ordered the Sesame bun, two Custard buns, and one Salty Egg bun. I thought the buns themselves, especially since they were fresh - the bun is flaky on top and soft on the inside. The Salty Egg and Custard fillings were great, but make sure they don't spill. The Sesame filling was fine, I think because it's a paste more than a custard, it wasn't as nice to bite into. I would definitely come back to try other flavors!

Maggie W.

Yelp
I've been waiting to try these pineapple buns forever, and I'm so happy I finally found myself in the area and was able to get a taste. There is a self serve kiosk and a cashier kiosk (I assume for those who prefer a screenless ordering experience or have questions about the product). The age demographic here was pretty mixed, it's definitely gotten popular due to social media but is also considered a local gem by older people. I ordered the matcha mochi, pandan coconut, chocolate marshmallow, guava butter, and regular pineapple bun. These buns are a bit more sweet than your typical Asian pastry, but are so fluffy and melt in your mouth that they are the perfect once in a while treat. My favorite was the chocolate marshmallow, it's classic and has a slightly airier texture to the butter filling due to the incorporation of marshmallow fluff. The matcha mochi wasn't my favorite, I think the QQ texture doesn't play off of the pineapple bun as well as I imagined it would. The pandan coconut and guava extract in the butter filling are pretty strong, I love when bakeries incorporate Asian flavors and play around with testing different combinations!

Yelp
I saw a line of people here while I was eating lunch nearby at Amazing Basil. My friends and I decided to come and get some goodies to go before heading out. I got the Ube Pineapple Bun, Taro Pineapple Bun, Red Bean Pineapple Bun, croissant egg tart, and matcha red bean tart. All were so delicious!!!! I shared with my husband and son, all consumed in minutes. The croissant egg tart was very soft in the middle, crunchy and tasty with the flakes falling into your mouth with every bite; so good! My only regret is only getting one to try, I would get half a dozen next time! If you like matcha, you will enjoy the matcha red bean tart as well. I will come back to try other flavors of the pineapple buns and definitely get more tarts! This bakery store replaced the previous Gong Cha Boba tea shop.

Yelp
I heard of this place since it opened in Fremont. I was told the lines were always long so I didn't really want to go. I would drive by sometimes and I always saw a long line of people. I figured I would wait until the hype goes down. Fast forward a year later. I was told they had an online pick-up service so I took advantage and ordered ahead. In the couple times I went, I had the butter supreme box, deluxe box, a couple different flavors of the regular size butter filled pineapple breads, and recently, the croissant egg tarts. Here are my thoughts: Pineapple bun: The foundation of almost all the pastries here. Their buns are sooo soft, chewy, and light. Then its covered by this crumbly "cookie" topping. Like the melon pan of Japan, and the conchas of Mexico. But these are soo much more lighter. I understand now why they call themselves "Pineapple King" Butter supreme box: I got this so I can try more flavors in smaller sizes. I only really liked the butter and guava butter. The chocolate was too bitter to my liking, and the salted egg was okay (and I usually love anything salted egg) Deluxe box- Three pastry cream filled pineapple buns and a butter bun. It was fine, I still like the butter bun alot more than these pastry cream filled ones. My friends did like these though. I also think this box is a great value for what you get. I normally get this one when I go to share at work. Regular Size butter filled pineapple buns- My favorite were the pandan, guava, and original butter. I thought I would hate the butter thinking "it's literally just a slab of salted butter in a bread" How dare I. That thing was fire. I always get the original butter every time I go. (New) Croissant Egg Tarts- Oh lordth. These things were immaculate. They have a 6pc maximum per order and these things were $3.50 each. And I understand why. They probably sell out of these quick. The crunchy buttery croissant shell, creamy but "light" sweet egg filling, and the caramelized burnt sugar? Forget about it. Give me all 6. Overall, really good pastries. The service is sometimes a miss, like this young man who just stared at me while they looked for my number, without a smile or a word. (First job -vibes-). Doesn't deter me from going as much as I do now. I highly recommend ordering ahead and picking up. Just don't forget your order number lol

Yelp
Saw a line while driving past from Osaka market so I thought it must be good. They're popular for their pineapple bun and egg tart croissants. Getting it warm straight out of the oven was delicious. I got the original butter and tried 1 pandan. The pandan was good but I prefer the original. Took it home and added some vanilla ice cream. Perfection

Carmen C.

Yelp
Came by during a weekend. Stood in line and ordered. Tasted fresh and good, Would come back when craving hits.

Sylvia K.

Yelp
Came by on a Sunday around 12:30pm and there was no wait or line. We got the usual butter supreme box and the new matcha red bean egg tart. The matcha red bean egg tart was very crunchy and flaky on the outside, and the inside was lava type of custard! It has strong matcha flavor with red beans inside, it wasn't as sweet as I expected . The price was a bit too steep ($4.95) for that size of an egg tart. The croissant egg tart was as good and "only" $3.50. Not sure if I will get that matcha red bean egg tart again due to the price.

Tatiana S.

Yelp
Finally got the chance to try this spot located in a fairly busy shopping plaza in Fremont. Coming on a Monday early afternoon was perfect because it wasn't very busy. We decided to try a few different buns to see what the hype was about, although it was a bit hard to decide what to get. One thing I will say is that because the box we received our goods in say that the buns are best eaten when warm, I thought the buns would be coming out hot. However only some of them were which was a bit disappointing. Over all though the buns were still fairly delicious and filling. I especially enjoyed the crust on the buns as it was slightly sweet and paired well with some of the saltier buns. I can only imagine how much better they'll taste hot! One last thing to note is that there is a few seats right in front but other than that this is definitely more of a take home and enjoy kind of treat.

Trina W.

Yelp
This Pineapple King location is located in the Mission Square Plaza off the Mission Blvd exit in Fremont. I was super excited when I found out that this location opened as the San Francisco one is just a bit too far to go to from the East Bay. We went around noon time on a weekend. There was a constant stream of people ordering and picking up online orders, but it never got to the point where there was a long line/wait. This location is similar to the SF location where you order from a window counter. The difference is that there's a few tables outside where you can sit and eat your pastries. We got a few pastries: egg tart, original pineapple puff, guava butter pineapple bun, pandan coconut butter pineapple bun, and a few more I can't remember right now. Everything was delicious and the same quality as the SF location. We'll definitely be back!

Lloyd C.

Yelp
Picked up some more Plain Pineapple Buns, Taro filled Pineapple Buns. Then, we noticed they had Pineapple filled Pineapple Buns, so we had to get one of those! Not bad of a line around 3:30 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Christy L.

Yelp
A not-so-hidden gem with the best pineapple bolo bao buns in the South Bay Area! The buns don't actually contain any pineapple, but they get their name from the sweet and slightly crisp top layer that resembles a pineapple. This crispy layer is the BEST part. If you're eating it right away, I actually like the original best as you can appreciate the bread for what it is. If you're taking it home and will reheat it in the oven, the butter filled ones are the way to go! Special shoutout to the pandan butter one. This place is grab and go with a few outdoor tables. I'd recommend ordering ahead if you can.

Ter L.

Yelp
Bro.... WTF??!! [& I say that in a very very very good way]!!! The hype that surrounds Pineapple King Bakery is all that and so much more!!!! I'm a little embarrassed to admit how long I have been putting this place off- regardless of the many high marks I always hear. I'll chalk that up to being ignorant to what a pineapple bun is. What came to mind when I envisioned "pineapple buns" were pineapple fillings or pineapple flavored baked goods and that's a huge no-no for me. For those of you who aren't familiar with these pastries, a pineapple bun is essentially a sweet, milk bread dough. These buns are soft, fluffy, and despite its' name- the pastries do not contain any pineapple. [[THANK GAAAWD!]] The name actually refers to its infamously crunchy top coating. The buns can be bought as is or they are offered with a number of flavors/fillings. First and foremost, this spot is tiny! Ordering is broken down to two separate lines: ordering through kiosk or placing orders with an actual employee. The bakery itself consists of a counter/register where you make your purchase and stand off to the side and await for your order to be called for pick up. This place is generally a takeout joint and the seating is limited to 3 tables located off to the side. Lines are long but it absolutely helps to know exactly what you'd like to order beforehand. Our purchases consisted of: -CROISSANT EGG TART x2 -PINEAPPLE BUN [plain] x3 -BBQ PORK PINEAPPLE BUN -GOLD BUTTER PINEAPPLE BUN [kerrygold butter used] -DURIAN MOONCAKE Food: To be completely honest, I don't think you could go wrong with any items. The pineapple buns are fluffy but well balance with it's crunchy top. The sweet and buttery flavors keep you wanting more!! The gold butter bun was good but too béo [fatty] for this to be a favorite of mine but as a random treat, I wouldn't mind going halfsies. Lmao. 5/5 stars!! Look for the long lines & massive crowds swarming a random spot in the plaza- you can't miss it! I recommend stocking up- buy an addition bun or two from the initial number you already had in mind because they do hold up well and reheating in the air fryer give you that "freshly baked" taste/feel!! You will not be disappointed :P

Yanli X.

Yelp
Definitely a different experience compared to pineapple buns from your typical bakery. Eat them while they're hot. With the butter slab, the insides are soft and gooey, almost like mochi. And the outside really contrasts with its crumblyness. Recommend eating outside as you will make a mess!

Eve H.

Yelp
Tried multiple types of pineapple buns. Favorite was the guava butter. Definitely the stand out winner. The ones with cream filled were okay. Overall, the top crust is very thin and bread wasn't very soft. Nostalgic for as a childhood staple but not good enough to make a trip out. There is always a line but it moves quick. Took no longer than 15 mins from ordering. There is a kiosk and person to order from. Recommend the kiosk. Personnel is very nice.

Kristine F.

Yelp
I had work training in Fremont during the hottest week in July and decided to stop by Pineapple King for the first time in 97° weather. No line Thursday afternoon! Customer service from the young lady I spoke with was fantastic as well! I asked what was popular and she told me about the combo boxes so I got both plus a few other items. Turns out the matcha mochi with red bean was her favorite. She graciously thanked me for my purchase after ordering. *Butter Supreme box (4 minis): Chocolate Marshmallow Butter Guava Butter Salted Egg Butter Original Butter *Deluxe Box (3 mini cream filled + 1 butter): Original Pineapple Puff Matcha Pineapple Puff Mango Pineapple Puff Original Butter Puff Singles: Matcha Mochi Pineapple Bun Spam & Egg Pineapple Bun SO. PILLOWY. SOFT!! Plus delicate crumbles of sweet goodness from the top. It blew my mind and I scarfed down the melty mini guava butter bun so fast in my car even though the AC couldn't cool down my scorching car fast enough. I was only gone for 5-10 min. I ended up eating the mini matcha cream filled bun right after. So good!! My sis really liked the chocolate marshmallow butter. I can't wait to try the pandan coconut butter bun next and get the guava butter again. The spam & egg is already premade so it wasn't hot off the skillet or anything. The original butter wasn't for me, too much butter without any sweet flavors. Line up outside to place your order at the counter. Left side is kiosk ordering and right side is with an employee.

Celine L.

Yelp
Came here on 2 different Sundays about 30 minutes before opening and generally a long line starts forming about 15 min before opening time (12pm). The line moves relatively fast. I had seen this place and heard good things but the butter aspect sort of put me off. Tell me why after having it once I found myself wanting to go back whenever I'm near the area. I will say the cream puffs are phenomenal and the standard pineapple buns are a bit too much for my taste, the butter being overwhelming. The sleeper item here is definitely the spam and egg bun. But then again I'm a sucker for savory stuff. They did not have any pork floss buns available when we went.

John D.

Yelp
King of Beauty Second location for this popular Hong Kong-style bakery that specializes in Pineapple Buns that are neither made from nor contain any trace amounts of their moniker. But instead the name refers mostly to their color, slight sweetness, and craggily appearance. The Good: *A lot of foods that get all the social hype are rarely as good as they claim to be, but Pineapple King is pretty legit. The buns are soft on the inside, and have a nice crisp exterior that's just slightly so sweet. *All the flavors we tried were excellent but the Guava Butter really was the standout of the bunch. Not too sweet and a great natural guava flavor went great with the buns. *Fairly good value; $8 gets you a "Deluxe Box" with four flavors of mini buns. The normal sizes buns are $4/ea but packed with flavor. *They accept all types of digital and analog payments. A lots of times, Asian bakeries like this are cash only. The Meh: *Distinct possibility of a line here but nowhere near as bad as the one in The City. *Private parking lot but it can get a bit dicey as it's a pretty popular shopping center. No street parking. *More of a grab-and-go operation. Nowhere really to sit and eat. The Ugly: *The guy running the register the day we went was very Soup N@ẓî-ish in his demeanor. Barking at customers and waiting impatiently for us to make our order. As stated above, the line was minimal, so there really was no reason to rush us thru. Conclusion: Tasty sweet treats that's made it a must-stop for us when we're in the area.

Crystal C.

Yelp
The line wasn't too bad when we got there early not lunch hour. We love the original ones, crust is crispy and delicious! We usually pop them in the oven to reheat it and cover with a parchment paper to avoid burning. Then add a slice of butter to serve! Pre order online makes the process a bit faster.

Cathy D.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place ever since they opened the Fremont location! Previously I've drove past it and I would always see a long line. I didn't realize you can also order it online. I ordered around 1pm on a Sunday and it said it would take 25-40 minutes. Since I wasn't in a rush it didn't really matter to me. I got there a few minutes after it said it would be done. The place is just a little stand where you either order through a cash register, a kiosk or pick up. Surprisingly when I got there at 2pm, there wasn't a huge line. As soon as I got mine I realized that they were all warm. Which was really nice. I got the mango buns, The iconic guava butter, Pandan Butter and a Red bean filled. I tried the mango cream bun and it was so good. You can tell that the mango filling was used with real mango.Im excited to try the other breads i got!

Eric H.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon and there was a small line, but the line moved and orders came out very fast. You can taste the quality in every bread you buy, and is easily reheatable in a small oven or air fryer. My favorite is the sesame pineapple bun and the pineapple custard bun. Sometimes they may run out of certain buns so try to come early! For first timers, I recommend trying the deluxe box to get 4 different small buns.

Laney C.

Yelp
My favorite spot for pineapple buns!!! Super flavorful, crunchy, and very well worth the price. Eat it while it's warm for the best experience!

Mitzi W.

Yelp
Wow. I think I've gone to pineapple bun and butter heaven. I think I went overboard ordering just for one person. The butter slabs on the buns are incredible. The spam and egg had a bit of a kick to it. The egg tart was amazing -- crunchy and creamy! Haven't tried the salted egg or the guava butter one yet. There wasn't a line on a weekday afternoon. I'll be back!

Danielle M.

Yelp
I've had pineapple buns from the location in San Francisco, but when I saw that there was a new location in Fremont, I had to try (I also wanted to try the non-traditional flavors too). I ordered online and found that this was the best move I could possibly make - this place was poppin' when I got there. Service was quick due to the online order so please consider that especially if you're going on a weekend. The shop itself is pretty small so anticipate standing outside if the crowds are there. I ordered the a Supreme Box with the following: - Original: delicious as usual, you CANNOT go wrong with the classic pineapple bun - Guava: I was surprised to say that the guava flavor took a while for me to process (I'm usually a huge fan of guava), but it added a nice little sweet kick to the bun - Marshmallow: Of the four flavors, this one was the least impressive to me but still yummy - Salted egg: Probably my favorite other than the original. I'm usually someone who prefers the sweeter, fruitier flavors, but this one actually surprised me! It was nice and brought out a lot in terms of flavor. This place is affordable and offers delicious pastries. If you're in the East Bay and have never tried the one in SF, at least try some of the pastries from this location! (You won't regret it!)

Yelp
Oh I am a huge sucker for pineapple buns and this place is a godsend for pineapple bun lovers like me! If you're nostalgic of the old school Hong Kong pineapple buns with a slab of butter, you will relive your dreams here. They also have new age flavors and fusion of flavors to keep things interesting. Their buns are delicious, freshly made, and packaged well for your consumption on the go. They have the classics but if you're new here or looking for an experience, just order the special bundles to get a bit of everything. Every time I've been here, there are lines out the door but fortunately, they have three separate lines to accommodate orders made via mobile as well as those made on the spot with their kiosks. I would recommend ordering in advance if you're not fond of waiting in line which moves pretty quickly. They have a shared lot that seems to be always busy but if you're patient enough, you'll get a spot. Otherwise, consider parking a bit further out or in the next mall down the street and just walk. Overall, Pineapple King is a fun novelty that serves up some delicious classic snacks and baked goods. They will not disappoint with the quality of their food so just make sure you order ahead or be patient enough to not get hangry!

Yelp
Just got lucky without the long wait Order at the front and five minutes later your order is ready Although price is higher but worth it It's doughy outside and sweet crunchy in top Brought various flavors bun including matcha and black sesame buns. Yum yum

Yelp
Pinnacle king bakery is always the best idea! They ended up opening before the actual opening time and there was already a short line. There's 2 lines: a self order one via kiosk and a worker. We needed up ordering with the worker and it was faster! We got a dozen of the original pineapple buns and an egg and spam. Can't go wrong with any of that. It's super chill, Perfect for just stopping by starting your foodventure!

Yelp
I get the hype! But you have to eat it fresh else you won't get the hype lol. I like the originals, the sesame, and the minis the most. I'm looking forward to trying more! There was a small line before it even opened. As they opened, they divided into two lines - one for kiosk ordering, one for cashier ordering. It's all outdoors like a pick up window. Lots of parking spots in a plaza, but can still be crowded. There are some outdoor tables right in front.

Yelp
The hype is real! A bit far from us in the peninsula but worth a once in a while drive for some warm, fresh, pineapple buns! We really like their mini size (just the right size / portion to eat without feeling bad) and they also have many interesting flavors like red bean, guava, black sesame, salted egg, and more! Ordering is quick and can be done via in person, online or on a kiosk. Got our buns in about 5 min and the folks working there were friendly. An incredibly tasty, crunchy, pineapple bun with unique flavors! We also liked their croissant egg tart - was delicious in the microwave the day after as well!

Yelp
Pineapple King is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates a perfectly crafted bun. I recently stopped by, and I have to say, their buns are absolutely fantastic--crunchy on the outside and delightfully soft and delicious on the inside. Each bite is a little slice of heaven! What really stood out to me was the exceptional service. The cashier was incredibly friendly and genuinely seemed to enjoy making customers' experiences enjoyable. It's always a pleasure when the staff adds a personal touch to your visit. Even if you see a line out the door, don't let it deter you. The line moves quickly, so you won't be waiting long. It's definitely worth the wait to get your hands on one of these delectable buns. Overall, Pineapple King delivers top-notch quality and service, making it a standout spot for anyone craving a crunchy, delicious bun. Highly recommend checking it out!

Yelp
Luckily no wait on a Sunday afternoon. I've been to the SF location twice and I've tried the pineapple bun with guava and a few other flavors there. We got an assortment including original pineapple bun with butter, pineapple bun with guava, pineapple bun with pandan coconut, and sesame pineapple bun. I tried the original pineapple bun with butter & the pineapple bun with guava. Both were pretty good. I liked the guava flavor better because it felt less heavy with the sweetness. Service was pretty fast, took less than 5 minutes for our pastries to be ready. Plenty of parking in the shared lot. No seating, just a few round picnic tables outside. More of a grab-and-go type of booth.

Yelp
Had a family member bring home a box in the morning but couldn't get to it until it had sat for a bit. Biggest tip would be to eat them hot if you can, because as I found out they get crumbly and dry if you don't at least warm them up for a bit. They had only purchased their sweet filled options, but beggars can't be choosers so here I am. Out of their pandan, mango, chocolate marshmallow, and matcha filled buns, I can only wholeheartedly recommend the matcha because all of the other ones were excessively and artificially sweet. I look forward to visiting in person and trying some of their classic or savory options though.

Yelp
This place has had a long wait since it's grand opening not too long ago. It's definitely a popular place, since there's always a line out the door so I always ended up not coming in, but glad I did yesterday. It was probably the first time that there was only one or two people people ahead of me vs the usual 10-20 people out the door in line to order pastries here that I see when driving to this Asian grocery store and restaurant plaza. Ambiance Yesterday I stood in line for quite a bit just because the person in front of me was taking a while to order on the kiosk, but it is split into two different lines. One line on the right is more for pick up, or you can order from a real human and on the left side on another line, you can order via touchscreen kiosk . They also have a swag in a glass case, with t-shirts and hats. Taste I brought this home for my parents and I to try. I hadn't tried anything before, so I decided to get the mini bun pack, which was still fresh and creamy almost semi liquid-y, but not quite, and good at least for the one that we had. The flavor of the inside filling my mom and I first tried and its texture reminded me of an eclair. The guava butter was really good and very sweet. My mom and I loved the flavor. The barbecue pork was also good, well seasoned on the outside too, and a slight teeny tiny crisp. Verdict ‍ I definitely would come here again for a bigger package and I tried most of the flavors but still have to try the mango matcha one we have as well (not sure about the durian one).

Yelp
Got the matcha mochi, taro, and guava butter pineapple buns. They were all delicious! The way the bun was baked was just on point. The crust on top was just the right amount of flaky and even slightly sweet. The fillings were all good but the star was definitely the bun itself. Definitely would recommend ordering ahead because the lines were a little confusing with where to go for pick up and ordering. The staff was super nice and friendly though! There is seating outside but very limited.

Yelp
Driving through the mission crossover from 880 to 680? This place is worth stopping at! The lines aren't as crazy as they were when it opened, but there's a steady group out front. You can order through online, with the cashier at the front ounter, or at a tablet at the front counter. There are a lot of interesting and unique options so check out their menu before you get there. I bought 10 to bring to my friend's house as a special treat and they were inhaled upon arrival. It's a fun dessert to share! If you are planning on eating there, there are some outdoor tables in front, no inside dining area.

Yelp
They always sell out of their bbq pork bun so fast! But their pineapple bun bbq pork bao is soo good. Their baos are so fluffy and soft. The fillings are super generous. Service is fast. You order in the front and there is no seating area. Pricy but worth!

Yelp
Lines are definitely shorter than the SF location but recommend ordering online to save time. Somewhat ridiculous that it still takes 40 minutes when ordering ahead but if you already know what you want it's easy. Recommend the guava butter above anything else. I still find the slab of butter odd and a tad too much for my liking, but the pastry itself is delicious and you don't have to eat ALL the butter. The buns that are cream filled were also surprisingly good but not what they are most known for. These do not pack well. Recommend eating immediately or else the top loses its crunch and gets a little soggy.

Yelp
I honestly don't understand why this place has such a long line. Hubby was at the plaza across the street so I sent him here after he had finished his errands. We ordered plain pineapple bun, bbq pork pineapple bun, taro pineapple bun, and sesame pineapple bun. I was so excited when hubby came back with my food. The buns were warm. Unfortunately, I thought the bread was just mediocre. There was no sweetness nor butteriness from the bread itself. The bbq pork was dry (no sauce) and the sesame paste was borderline bitter. I did enjoy the taro filling but as I mentioned before, the bread is mediocre.

Yelp
Is it worth the hype? Yes it is!! I don't even like pineapple bun and never really had good ones but this shop changed my mind! I came here on a Friday after lunch and thought oh ok I guess the hype died down only 1 person ahead of me but as I was eating in my car after I bought some I saw about 10 people lining up etc. I guess I just beat the rush. The pineapple bun was soft and not too flaky but still has a good sweet crust to it. The bun itself is pillowy soft and not overly sweet which is great to contrast the flavored pandan butter. I thought I was eating a stick of butter but it's more like creamy butter with strong flavors of pandan as it should be! The bun was warm and the butter was slightly melted but you can still solid overall. I ate almost half of it, even though I am not a big fan of pineapple bun and I was already full from a heavy lunch. Take out only, parking available in plaza. I'm definitely coming back!

Yelp
Holy moly, Pineapple King serves up the absolute best pineapple bun I've ever tasted! I opted for the gold butter version, though I'm not sure if the regular butter would've been much different--and this one was a bit pricier--but boy, was it delicious! The bun itself was impeccably fresh, with a slight crisp on the outside and pillowy softness inside that made each bite heavenly. The addition of fresh butter, slowly melting into the warm pastry, elevated it to perfection. Sure, there's always a massive line here, but trust me, it's 100% worth the wait. If you're a fan of impeccably fresh pastries that are as delightful to look at as they are to eat, Pineapple King is a must-visit!

Yelp
The egg tarts ARE SO GOOD! Even at $3.5 each! Line was not long and service was very quick. I used the order with staff option. There was also a order at kiosk option. The pineapple buns were very tasty especially those with custard filling.

Odie O.

Yelp
I am in love with the croissant egg tart I could eat two every morning I wish I lived next door Their custard buns are so soft and fresh I am in heaven the smaller ones are perfect bites seriously delish

Yelp
YES- a pineapple bun that is the perfect amount of bread, not too thick, and a decent bolo bao crust that actually is a crust and not a thin flake. Definitely would recommend their top choices. they have pineapple buns with flavored butters or regular pineapple buns that are filled inside and more. We tried the pineapple bun with pandan coconut butter, and it came out, warm and slightly melted. It is not that sweet. We also got an ube pineapple one, but it is just a filling, and that was not as good as the flavored butter.

Yelp
Heard a lot of hype around Pineapple King. So I was glad they opened up an Easy Bay location. I thought the hyped might have died down, but nope. Came around noon on a Friday and there was already a line. The shop is located on a corner right near the entrance of the plaza. So parking and getting to it is a little difficult. I wasn't sure what to get. Ended up getting their deluxe and supreme box. It was a really hot day, so by the time that I got home to try it out. A good chunk melted or wasn't as fresh anymore. So it's hard for me to give it an accurate review. But flavors were decent, I liked the supreme box more with had more of a custard type filling. It's not really a game changer enough for me to come back. But glad I tried it and now I know!

Yelp
Love me some pineapple buns, so I was excited to try this place out! The day we went, they ran out of the normal sized buns, so they gave us 2 mini ones in its place. I tried the pandan and guava, and while both were good, guava was the winner for me! The buns were so fresh with a yummy flaky crust. These must be eaten immediately for maximum enjoyment! The butter slab inside is a unique twist on the classic pineapple bun, and it wasn't too sweet! There are so many other flavors, it's hard to pick just one! This is a walk up to the window and order spot. There's a couple tables out front, but otherwise this is mostly a grab and go type of place.

Yelp
It was a foodie day and one of the stops that we had as one of our stops was Pineapple King since my friend had never been to the original location in San Francisco. This second location is at the Mission Square Plaza so parking was not an issue in this mall. Hearing about lines to order and expecting a line, we were here at 2pm on a Wednesday and there wasn't a line. We walked up to check out the menu posted at the door, which listed their top ten pineapple buns with variations for the top three and six addition varieties. With my order in mind, I walked up to the counter and placed my order. You wait for your order number to be called and you pick up at the window. BBQ pork pineapple bun - bun was a little smaller than ones I get in Chinatown, but they had a good amount of tasty bbq pork. Taro pineapple bun - an oval shaped bun with a not overly sweet taro filling. Wished it had more filling. My friend was happy that she didn't have to go to the City to get her Pineapple King buns. If you love your pineapple buns, they will have a variety that you'll like.
