Pizza Bob's - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Pizza Bob’s might serve pizza, but it’s all about the chipati. For the uneducated, chipatis are an Ann Arbor way of saying let’s stuff some lettuce into a 1 lb bread pocket and pretend it’s a salad. It’s the quintessential healthy college meal. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

12 Affordable Restaurants in Ann Arbor, Michigan near the University of Michigan | Eater Detroit

"Pizza Bob’s is well known for its Chipati — a gigantic freshly-baked pita stuffed with veggies, cheese, and special sauce. Additionally, the pizzas, calzones, and toasted sub sandwiches are a great way to fill up without breaking the bank." - John Reyes

Michelle was patient and helpful, as it was our first time visiting. We ordered a small, ham, mushroom, and onion pizza, garlic cheesy bread, a chapati, and an almond-coffee milkshake. Everything was absolutely delicious, but the chapati changed my life. 10/10. I will for sure be coming back, anytime I am headed toward Ann Arbor!

Don't leave Ann Arbor without stopping at Pizza Bob's and having a famous Chipati! The bread is wonderful, and the Chipati sauce is to die for. Better get a bottle before you leave, or you'll wish you had. Family owned and operated. The owner has been there working harder than the rest, every time we've eaten there over the years. That's commitment, and that's what makes Pizza Bob's a true stand out. Don't miss it!!!

Melissa Barrow

Google
I tried the Chipati sandwich today with the special dressing. Loved it! Like a salad in a fresh pita pocket heated in the oven and a dressing that has an Italian flavor.

Google
I've been visiting Pizza Bobs since 1975 and I love that everything I love about it has not changed in 44 years. Classic 'hole in the wall' with pizza, subs, calzones and the wonderful, delightful, always pleasing, Chips to, a salad in a pits. If you have never had one, please treat yourself and try one. I ordered a 'Super' and here's the photo.

Ashley Bray

Google
Excellent pizza, bread, and shakes! Friendly atmosphere and excellent service.

Google
Late delivery and it was cold. Dude had a broken foot and didnt leave his car. Way over priced. This little salad was $5.49. Plus they charged be $1.29 for dressing. Wow!! Ill be here for a month. Someone please recommend a good delivery place

Google
First time I went to Pizza Bob’s was 20 years ago with my Mom and Grandfather. I have been going back periodically over that time and have always ordered the Super Sub. I still believe it is one of the best sandwiches in Ann Arbor. I hear their pizza is good, but I always end up getting the Super Sub because it is so consistently delicious. If you buy a bottle of chapati sauce and pour it on a Super Sub, you will be brought tremendous joy. Shakes are my favorite too. Love this place.

Google
They've best subs here! 🌟 Also, a lot of good vegetarian options!

Yelp
Get the original chapati on wheat -it's fresh and delicious! The chapati sauce is great as well. Nice big helping for sharing. Ordered to go and was ready on time .

Yelp
Pizza Bob's, hands down has the best milkshakes in A2. With so many flavors to choose from and combinations to create, the flavors are limitless. Whenever we are home to visit family, we always have to stop in for a shake (or 2) and are never disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything is great at Pizza Bob's but the shakes are off the charts. I remember having one many years ago and when I was back in town it was just as good as my lofty expectations were remembering. Love this place!

Yelp
The best Oreo milkshake I have had to date. I'll update this post if I come across another place that does it better... but we seriously take the drive just for the Oreo Shake. I can't explain it... it just has "it". Stumbled upon this place back in college... and I still take the ride down memory lane... through campus... just to grab a chipati and shake. We are talking decades now. Wow do I feel old. Chipati is a salad in a pita pocket. With its own style dressing... amazed that no other restaurants around metro Detroit serve a similar style menu item. Even if there weee more in the area... Would not deter me from returning to pizza bobs. Located at state and packard... Limited parking in the area. Beware- they moved to the corner spot. Because they are that good. Where the burger joint used to be located. Ironically cannot recall if the pizza is good... I think the last za I ordered was back in 2008 when they had a buy one get one special. Once you go Chipati you don't go back!!

Yelp
If Jets is a 5-star? If Pizza Hut is a 4-star? This place is a zero star. I gave it 2 stars because my pizzaholic wife liked it a little bit. I thought they put too much cheese on it. You may like that. I didn't. They put half the pepperoni everybody else uses. I also ordered mushrooms and green peppers. I could see some. But the amount was so small they were untasteable. And it needed to be cooked for 3 or 4 more minutes. And I saved the worst criticism for last. Where is the sauce? There wasn't enough sauce on the whole extra-large pizza for one slice. So I guess if you like cheese bread with no sauce, then maybe you'll like Pizza Bob's . But me, I'll drive to the next place.

Yelp
I love the chapatis here!! They are one of my favorite things. Also so fresh and warm when I pick them up. I usually call ahead and the service is quick and so so kind. The inside is nice too and a great location.

Yelp
Had delicious calzones and shakes including seasonal peach. Staff is super friendly and the food was fantastic.

Yelp
Great place to eat! I stopped in today for lunch and had such a wonderful time chatting it up with the two staffers. Got a chipati and milkshake and it was perfect. Must come back next time I'm in the area. I do feel bad for the workers. They were wearing masks the entire time, even around their ovens. It's gotta be torture for them!!! Gave a good tip, they totally earned it!
google avatar

Jake M.

Yelp
I heard great things about this restaurant from some friends. I went in for dessert and got an Oreo milk shake, and it was fantastic. Nice staff, and a great environment. Also, overall one of the best milkshakes I've had in a while. I highly recommend!

S. K.

Yelp
There is no real ambiance other than 'dive' and service is passable but the chipatis and the pizza are great! The pizza/chipati dough is so good and pairs so well with the chipati sauce. Would highly recommend the chipati and the pizza. The subs are okay but not nearly as good relative to the chipati and pizza. It's a small place and not exceptionally clean so would takeout. Would definitely go back for the chipati and pizza.

Yelp
One for effort and two for being edible.. Avoid the pizza unless you have never had pizza before as this will set the new bar for terrible. The calzones are decent and not a bad option if you end up stuck here with friends. Also no restrooms.

Yelp
Having lived in Ann Arbor years ago, it's always a kick to check out our old haunts when we're in the area. You know--Crazy Jim's, the Washtenaw Dairy, etc. Fitting our " back at the hotel, feeling like pizza" mood, we were disappointed to hear they weren't delivering that evening. But we stuck with the plan, ordered our pizza (plus a sandwich!) & headed out to pick it up. While we waited, I was amused to see the clientele hasn't changed & saw a sticker reminding me how I loved chatting with Shaky Jake in the past. Funny thing is the next day my hubs commented that the memory of Pizza Bob's is better than the food was. Decent & hot pizza, meh sub, still enjoyed the memories.

Tristan W.

Yelp
Best food I have ever tasted! If you're going to a U of M football game make sure to stop here. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
In short, Chipati and chipati sauce over everything I've ordered from here sporadically throughout my time in Ann Arbor, and I always come back to getting a chipati with the chipati sauce on the side (if I'm feeling frisky, I'll even order extra). Granted, this is the only thing I've ordered from here, but the chipati is seriously HUGE (enough for 2 meals for sure) and it's always ready fast. Pizza Bob's chipati sauce is far better than that of Pizza House, and this no-frills place is more about getting the job done for cheap. I've heard great things about their shakes, but have never actually gotten one myself. I ordered a chipati here for dinner on my first night in Ann Arbor, I ordered one the other night when I moved apartments...I think I'm sensing a trend here....
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
They have the yummiest juciest calzones! You can choose any three fillings with their base sauce. It's totally worth it.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Either all have Covid or the pizza didn't have any taste at all. Not the bread. Not the sauce...

Yelp
Fast delivery and nice staff! Ordered via yelp and got my food super quick, decided to add more to my order so I called and a really nice gent helped me add to my order. Very kind and helpful and yummy pizza!! Would recommend for some late night pizza craving

Yelp
What can I say, I lived on chipatis with whole wheat pita and chicken throughout college, and it has become a tradition whenever I am back on campus. Great for dine-in, delivery, or pick-up. If you've never had a chipati, do yourself a favor and head in!

Yelp
I've heard that Pizza Bob's has the best milkshakes in Ann Arbor so I decided to give it a shot. I came in at 11pm on a Thursday night and the place was pretty empty. It was one of those hole in the wall places in every respect: one small round table, cramped bar seating, and just one guy working the register/making all the shakes. I ordered a regular strawberry Oreo milkshake, it took him around five minutes to make it, total came out to $4.30 after tip. It was definitely a solid milkshake. The consistency was nice: thick, but the still very drinkable through a straw. I appreciated how you could mix and match multiple flavors without an upcharge. When comparing it to Pizza House, the other place on campus that people say have good milkshakes, I gotta say I like Bob's more. It's almost half the price, and Pizza House's milkshakes are so thick and chunky that 70% of the time you just have to take the lid off and scoop it with a spoon. While delicious, it's more like ice cream than a milkshake. I'll definitely be coming to Pizza Bob's now for my milkshake fix.
google avatar

Yelp
Been wanting to come here for the last 5 years! I had high expectations for the chipati and milkshake, and definitely was not disappointed. Got the chipati and although salad is one of my least favorite things, that magical sauce they use makes you love salad and bread!! The milkshake was the creamiest thing I've had in a while: a vanilla caramel hot fudge deliciousness.

Yelp
More years ago than I'd like to admit, I lived across the street from Pizza Bob's. I'm certain that I got carry-out from there at least once a week. I fell in love with their chipati (a huge sandwich of cheese, peppers, mushrooms, lettuce and harbinger of my future vegetarianism) and their thick, sweet but kicky malts (strawberry-banana was my fave). So, when I found myself in Ann Arbor on a Saturday morning for the first time since my student days, I had to return here. It was the same as I remembered. The chipati sauce still performs an alchemy on the veggies. The strawberry-banana malt is still a sugary dream. The menu has changed little if at all (good taste time travel for fogey alums like me). This little tasty throwback store is worthy of acquaintance or re-acquaintance.

Yelp
I feel like the value just isn't there for this place. My son wanted pizza so we stopped and got him a small and it was around 9 with pepperoni. Flavors didn't pop at all, the sauce was pretty sparse and bland. Also, we ordered online and still had to wait quite a while. I was hoping a college town hole in the wall would be great, but not this time.
google avatar

Vinny M.

Yelp
I loved this place then, and I love it now. The owners (now) are wonderful. They work too hard, but that's a small business. I wouldn't change a thing, except maybe they should have the TV on ESPN all the time to draw in more customers. But I'm just a patron. Nothing has changed in 25 years, and that's what I wanted.

Willa H.

Yelp
We visited on Friday at 6 pm. This was during the art fair - we thought it'd be busy. In fact, there was quite a line, but only because the person manning the tell was a 10 year old boy. He said he was a fifth grader - he couldn't count out change because he couldn't distinguish between quarters and nickels. The pizza took 35 minutes instead of the promised 10-15, and was very lackluster. Tasted like cafeteria pizza from elementary school. Pizza Day may have been the best day of the week then, but it certainly isn't when you have to pay $11 for a doughy mess of cheese slopping over the crust. Would not come again, at least as long as elementary schoolers are manning the counter. Next time I'll check an adult is present before ordering, or just go next door to BRB burrito.

Yelp
SHAKE REVIEW: So based on all the reviews of the shakes I thought I better give them a try. I've tried both the coffee and the "most popular" (which I think was everything listed in the middle row or something?... chocolate, peanut-butter, and other stuff). The coffee shake is tasty, but rather mild and light. An average shake... in fact the cappuccino shake at Jack in the Box or the jamocha shake at Arby's are both better. The other shake almost tastes warm, perhaps because of all the mixings in it... meanwhile the straw keeps getting clogged. I'm not a fan. While not crazy expensive, it's a little steep for a hole in the wall milkshake.

Christopher K.

Yelp
This was by far the worst pizza I have ever had in my life. It is actually quite sad. It don't even understand how you can make something have no taste at all. (This isn't COVID related either, I can taste all other foods right now)
google avatar

Moe H.

Yelp
I walked in and asked for a milkshake, the very unfriendly lady asked what size I wanted. I asked what sizes did she have and she pointed at the wall. I looked then didn't find the milkshakes right away so I asked where it was and she abruptly said "right there where it says malt". I said that it would be easier if she could just tell me. She abruptly responded "we have 16, 20 and 24". I said I changed my mind because I didn't appreciate the way she spoke to me. She said ok. I drove away, got my shake from michigan creamery and started writing a bad review while waiting then felt bad because of how COVID is hurting small businesses and I thought maybe the lady was having a bad day. So I drove back to the place and walked in and found the owner. I told him what happened and that I just wanted him to be aware of how his staff treats customers. Without even looking up, he said "there's nothing wrong with directing you to the menu on the wall". My conclusion is the store owner himself is not friendly and he sets the tone for his staff.

Yelp
Good food and milkshakes but poor service. The cashier was not polite, helpful or enthusiastic about the restaurant. The manager was more welcoming but over all, disappointed in the service.

Kathy B.

Yelp
I have loved pizza bobs for years but have bad two horrible experiences in a week!! On Sunday we ordered food for four of us. The order was promptly cancelled because you were "busy". We tried again tonight, got a call saying it would be a long time, we offered to pick up. Shortly thereafter the online order cancelled. We cal you make sure we still have an order in. When we arrive to pick it up the two very stoned girls are working and say their computer is down but want to write down the credit number. Um HELL NO. So no food for us after all this. HIRE SOME WORKERS WHO CAN WORK SOBER
google avatar

Adam Y.

Yelp
If you haven't already walked in and bought a sub, you should do that! The subs are very fair for price and taste amazing.
google avatar

Susan G.

Yelp
Oh, how I miss this place. Suffering through 4 years of freezing weather to attend the University of Michigan was almost worth it to have pizza bobs at my disposal as often as I pleased. Chipatis + Milkshake = Heaven My only complaint is those bastards won't tell me the recipe for chipati sauce.
google avatar

Anne A.

Yelp
Alright, this place smells like the bathroom of an airplane and the workers looked at me like I went to Ohio State when I asked what their most popular milkshake was. So service wise, I give them a D. Just get carry-out so you don't have to deal with these hooligans. Food-wise, I truly love their chapati. I got the chipopeye once (like popeye the sailor because it has spinach get it??) and it was too healthy to be tasty. Just go with the real thing. The dressing is phenomenal and you feel somewhat healthy for not getting a pizza. Shakes were also really good. You can pick multiple flavors in one shake, so I got crafty and ordered mint, hot fudge, and oreo in mine. Devine. Anyway, just carry it out like Justin Timberlake.
google avatar

Dora C.

Yelp
2nd best milkshake in my LIFE. Chocolate + Almond + Coffee. Suck up some happiness. *Amendment - Vanilla + Almond + Coffee (BEST)
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
I thought this place went out of style with the first SNL cast. But voila... SNL is still around... and so is Pizza Bobs !!! This place is STELLAR ...!!! The pizza subs are great -- its a lot of stuff you shouldnt have. In this age of food police and quinoa everything its nice to find a place that hasn't changed with the times. This place is iconic and the food is amazing. Its a classic joint and its been there as long as I can remember and I grew up in A2. Its just as good now as it was then. Not to be missed.
google avatar

Buck B.

Yelp
Best place ever, for more than 30 years. The pizzas are generously topped, but let's face it everyone can do a good pizza. Pizza Bobs subs are amazing. And the Chipati is worth a trip Ann Arbor alone. I'd give 6 stars if could.
google avatar

T P.

Yelp
Best chipati in town. Hands-down. Even when you get it delivered. The bread is warm and delicious and the chipati sauce is the best in town. I've never bothered trying the pizza because the chipati is so good!
google avatar

Kari G.

Yelp
Review for MILKSHAKES ONLY--- When I was at school I ordered these milkshakes weekly... and now that I am away from Ann Arbor, I constantly think about making the 45 minute drive up there just to get one. The perfect combo to get: Oreo + Peanut Butter + Vanilla. HEAVEN. Even better--- the price-- SO CHEAP! This place makes me miss everything about AA
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
I actually really liked this place! I didn't know what to expect and was surprised when a friend recommended I try it out. I've passed it so many times but never thought to actually go in. I had a sub and it was really good! It reminded me of toasted subs from delis in New York, which made me homesick in a good way. I also liked the atmosphere; it's mildly kitchy with all the athletic posters yet simple with all the bland furniture. That doesn't sound attractive at all but it works for them. I'm definitely going to go here again and will have to try the chipati next time.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
Pizza Bob's offers three items that are worth ordering one time in your life. First there's the pizza, which can be ordered with a wheat crust (so you'll feel healthy) and it's cooked near to perfection. Second are the shakes. Find out what toppings are in stock that day and get ready to enjoy heaven in a glass. Last, but not least, are the chipotis which come with an amazing sauce and enough food to feed a family of four (but it's all yours).
google avatar

mike w.

Yelp
The two things that people rave the most about (chipati and shakes), are the two things that I would avoid. The shakes are soft serve vanilla. Get a large pepperoni pizza (serves 2-3) and a fountain drink and you will be happy!
google avatar

Lucia Y.

Yelp
Had heard the milkshakes were good here so came just for them. Was pretty underwhelmed. Price was fair for the size of the milkshake. Flavor was decent but not worth returning for. The place is really small and no chance you'd actually want to eat in there. I'm not saying don't go to Pizza Bob's, but there are other options in Ann Arbor that should be higher on your list.
google avatar

Stesha C.

Yelp
Great Chipotis! The sauce is wayyyyyyyyyyy better than pizza house. If you like spinach, get the chipopeye, also very good. Milk shakes are great too. I love strawberry pineapple ones!
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
This was one of the worst Ivr ever had. Advertised and it arivred very cold and inedible. Personally Ilwill never reccomed I won't be Bos ordering from you again. I will continue to order Tomicellies.

Paul H.

Yelp
Went on Friday at 6pm. The establishment was empty. We ordered and things came haphazardly: milkshakes without straws, pizza without plates... Nothing was good. Hot pizza should be flavorful, this was lack luster in every way: dough, sauce, cheese. The shake was ok. I will come back for one when I need soft serve with flavor additives. (This means no sooner than 6 months).
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
We ordered a calzone, salad, chipata and a shake. Everything was decent. The shake was really good. I'm sure we will go back at some point.

Yelp
Aside from having an awesome name (PIZZA BOB'S! i just love saying the name to this place), this place has pretty awesome food as well! I don't know where the chipati got started - someone told me PBs may in fact actually be the originators themselves - but the idea is amazingly delicious. OK so the chipati is the only thing I've had here so far, but I think we're off to a good start. Not only is it yummy but it doesn't make me feel like i'm wasting money buying a salad that I could put together myself for $5 less. Here's why: - The soft, chewy bread that makes the chipati exterior is phenomenal here. I don't know what they do but it's amazing. - Dipping sauce/dressing is pretty much my favorite part of the chipati. It's like a southwestern ranch type dressing but 10x better. - The salad is well made - things are chopped well, and proportionally I get a good amount of salad and shredded chicken, making for a perfect chopped salad when mixed in with the sauce, described above. - Free delivery! This is not really the first chipati that I've tried, either. I first thought (in my Ann Arbor n00b mind) that Pizza House was the only place that had chipatis, but then I heard about this place! It's been a while since I've had one from PH, but I don't remember dreaming about their chipati bread for a few days and then some like I did with Pizza Bob's. Plus, PBs has the chipopeye (again, this place and its names! amazing!) which is made with spinach. I think that will be the next thing I try here, and according to the reviews, milkshakes perhaps next after that, or along with that. And then finally I guess I'll have to try the pizza, won't I? Can't wait til the next time, Pizza Bob's!
google avatar

Shawna S.

Yelp
Best milkshake in town! I have been coming here since I was a kid... the peanut butter, carmel, chocolate milkshake it to die for! It is a tiny hole in the wall that may not do so well on health department inspections (I am making this up... i don't know their real scores), but the shakes are great. The prices are not the best - $3.50 for a small shake seems little high, but it is a true gem. Even though the name of the place has pizza in it, don't order pizza here. It is kinda crappy pizza... the chapatis and calzones are tasty so stick with those if you actually want to have a real meal.

Jon G.

Yelp
Anyone who claims that the best Chipati's are found elsewhere hasn't been here. Unlike other places where the pita is as hard as a rock, both white and wheat pitas are always soft and fluffy. The sauce, as always, is excellent. The best milkshakes in Ann Arbor are found here, and they know the right balance of flavors regardless of the combination. The sandwiches here are pretty good as well. The only thing they don't do great is their pizza. Even the staff is friendly and fun. A visit to Pizza Bob's is essential for a full Ann Arbor experience. Don't miss it.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Sadly disappointed with the quality of service there. Unlike most restaurants or hole in the wall places, the quality of the food is only made better by the quality of the people working there. The girl that was working there (Michelle) made me feel as if my presence was more of a burden than an enjoyable customer. I have been to Pizza Bob's only one time before and had a great experience! I'm sorry to see a place that that had fond memories have been replaced with bad ones. I won't be telling people to go there again.
