The 8 Best Restaurants on Governors Island

"We’d recommend Pizza Yard even if it wasn’t the only option on the island for a pie. Sure, we’ve encountered poofier, more airy versions elsewhere, but the wood-fired Neapolitan pies here are good enough to satisfy any craving for hot and gooey fresh mozzarella on a chewy crust. Pizza Yard also has one of the nicest setups on the island, with tons of picnic tables spread out under tall trees. Find a shaded spot, get a bottle of wine, and polish it off while eating the pizza with thin, slightly crispy slices of capocollo, or one with roasted mushrooms." - will hartman, kenny yang

Pizza Yard Review - Governors Island - New York - The Infatuation

"We’d recommend Pizza Yard even if it wasn’t the only option on Governors Island for a pie. Find a shaded spot, get a bottle of wine, and polish it off while alternating slices from a margherita and whatever special or meat pizza sounds good that day. We particularly like the one with thin, slightly crispy slices of capocollo and artichokes." - Kenny Yang

"NYC-inspired pizza chain Wiseguy Pizza is soft-opening its newest location in Navy Yard at noon today, in a decidedly design-inspired space, reports POPVille. Wiseguy will serve pizza today until it runs out. The mini chain is opening in the former Il Parco space; in a month, Counter Culture coffee and pastries (and beer) will also be served in the space." - Adele Chapin

The Margarita had a soft, chewy crust which was unusual for a wood fired pizza. The mozzarella was fresh and so was the tomatoes used in the sauce. The basil was a nice finishing touch. If one finds themselves at the Brooklyn Navy Yard give this place a try.

I love this spot! They make the best pizza in NYC I’ve tried so far! If pizza, then only there! My son loves pizza with mushrooms, I am Cotto fan myself! Whenever I get the slice, it’s always fresh, delicious with perfect crunchiness to it! Victor is the best barista! He makes exquisite extra hot latte, just the way I like 🤎 Mucho gracias!

Stumbled upon this place when at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and was very impressed by this pizzeria. Quality and flavor was great. Definitely will return when in the area

Google
The place is going through some changes and the pizza is amazing. Super friendly guys working there. We had a slice and ordered 12 pizzas for our ship. They were awesome about getting everything done quickly. Highly recommended.

While the whole building is great, the Pizza Yard fed me the cleanest tasting pizza I've had. Each of the simple ingredients Had their flavors pop and harmonized together very well. The crispy yet soft dough, the fruity tomato sauce, and the cheese with a satisfying chew. They also had fantastic service, explaining clearly how they have no nuts or sesame, allowing me to feed my daughter the same delicious pizza. They also have a large window to see into their kitchen, and my little girl was delighted to watch them masterfully prepare the pizza.

Picante slice and a cold brew. What more could you want! For the sausage and pepper slice and the broccli rabb slice i wish there was sauce… Friendly, fast service, nice warm pizza that didn’t burn my mouth.

Yelp
Service: 4.3/5 Food: 3.4/5 Not much to say, just needed a little snack-y snack during a long walk. What I Ordered: - Margherita: crispy on the first bite, chewy after it cooled down some. sweet tomatoes + fresh basil. a little greasy. overdid the chili flakes, but that's my own fault

Yelp
I had only been to the one in Governor's Island. A quick ferry ride from lower Manhattan then a a walk to the yard is a good escape from the concrete jungle. I like the thin crust pizza. Our orders came out quick. The outdoor seating gives a very relaxing vibe. This is a good place for a summer treat in the city.

Yelp
This is review is for delivery - eating in, or taking out might be better. While my order arrived in the estimated time, it was delivered, literally, ice cold. The delivery person, from Door Dash, used a carrier that was made of paper thin fabric, which did nothing to keep the food hot. This will preclude me from ever ordering from Pizza Yard, for delivery, ever again. It took over 10 minutes in the oven to get our pies warm, not hot. Any longer and the outer crust would have been too tough to eat. That being said, the pizza is clearly of the highest quality, and even in the terrible state of delivery, was very good. Nonetheless, it's clear that the care and respect shown their food doesn't extend to getting it to the customer in a good fashion. We kept on remarking something to the effect of, "Just think how good this would be if it arrived hot?" Given the very high prices, plus a $7 fee for delivery of less than a mile, and then getting ice cold pizza? A poor value. Perhaps Pizza Yard should consider doing their own delivery instead of outsourcing it to Door Dash, who is clearly not invested in their success.

Yelp
I had Pizza Yard while on Governor's Island because it was one of the only food options. The line for this place was insanely long... probably waited around 30 minutes. But MAN the pizza is fresh and so so delicious. We got the Margherita with tomato, mozzarella, and basil. We also got the Cotto with tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto cotto (ham), and basil. This pizza was so delicious. For both you could taste the fresh dough in the crust and the slightly charred pieces of tough with airy crust pockets. I thought the pizza was also perfectly complemented with additional toppings that they leave on the counter for customers to customize on their own. I added chili oil, basil, oregano, and more! I personally enjoyed the Cotto a bit more because of the meat, but both were so good. Make sure to eat it while it's hot!

Yelp
The soppressata slice was excellent, and the basil and other ingredients of the margherita tasted fresh. My "for-here" slices were cold because they were only placed in the warmer for a minute, but it was during the lunch rush at Brooklyn Navy Yard, so I understand the cashier was busy and trying to do many things at once. Regardless, the quality of the pizza holds up, and the service was friendly.

Yelp
This pizza is soooo delicious, I always get the cotto (ask for extra basil!). It's so fresh and they use the best ingredients, plus the owner Kiko is great. The problem is google and their own website lists their hours as 8.30- 9pm everyday. This is simply not true. I can catch them late on a Thursday, but they are often randomly closed on a weekend. I live literally opposite them, and I can't figure out their hours. So clarity on that would be super useful.

Yelp
Ok, do you know WHY Pizza Yard's pizza is SO GOOD?? Because it's made by Chicco, formerly of Saraghina!!!! From the perfectly risen and fallen pizza dough to the tanginess of his sauce to all the perfect toppings, you're seriously missing out if you are not having his pizzas!! And starting next week of 1/24th, he will be opened until 9pm from Thursday to Sunday, finally, yay!!! Just got the news from Chicco himself, Grazie Mille!! So so yummy!!!

Yelp
Food was poorly made and not properly made very disappointed with this meal choice. Sauce taste bland over seasoned but seasoning is bland the pizza had no taste the crust was not made right just a overall time wasted and money down the drain.

Yelp
How has this place not been reviewed yet? Pizzayard consistently makes beautiful pizzas. You can see the ingredients they use when you're ordering, and everything is top of the line - the best mozz, the best tomatoes, heck - they even use Battenkill milk for their lattes! Not only that, but the prices are so reasonable for such a well made pizza. They really care about their craft here, I prefer it to Motorino and Keste.

Yelp
Their pizza is really really good BUTTTTTT Their hours are always listed incorrectly and are inconsistent. Ordered for Pick up, got notified that it was ready to be picked up, got there five minutes later And they had closed for the night. They are closed at 6pm on a Friday evening, what pizza place in the world closes at 6pm on a Friday evening?

Yelp
The line for R&D was too long so I got a couple Sicilian slices of piccante pizza from Pizza Yard. The staff was super nice and warmed up my slices for me. I took my first bites at he Transmitter beer garden and was blown away. The pizza is unexpectedly light - chock full of delightful air pockets with a perfectly crispy bottom. Plus, the spicy sausage cups were crispy and delicious. I will definitely be back!
