Beauty and Brine: Prince Edward Island Is an Oyster-Lover’s Paradise | Bon Appétit

"Perched on a rocky shoreline beside a sand beach and overlooked by PEI’s oldest lighthouse, this small seaside spot pairs an unbeatable view with uncomplicated, down‑home Maritime cooking. The owner, who runs the kitchen about 110 days a year and closes in the off‑season, aims to have the food match the setting; highlights include plump mussels in a lemon‑cream broth, jumbo quahog clams packed into a generous chowder, a springy seafood linguine enriched by cold‑smoked finnan haddie, and the house oysters plucked from nearby Pinette River, noted for their briny liquor and hint of sweetness. Seating at picnic tables right at the water’s edge enhances the lingering, unhurried experience." - ByChantal Martineau

Google
An absolute magical place. Simple service and familiar atmosphere right in front of the water. I had the clams as a first try in PEI and they were incredibly good! Delighted to know then that it’s a recipe inspired in Portugal made with incredible fresh clams from a river nearby. I wish I had discovered this place sooner in my trip. I will definitely go back there when I’ll visit PEI again. And the owner, an absolute sweetheart!

Google
Adorable restaurant with all the east coast vibes. Oysters were super fresh & delicious. Snow crabs also so good. However, the stand out was the streamed clams. I will be thinking about that pot forever. Best clams we have ever had with the onion and chorizo. Amazing lunch. A must stop!

Google
It was my first time here and the Food is 1000% worth all the hype. TIP: found out that you apparently need to arrive and get a table FIRST before getting back in line to order your food so it is a bit confusing for anyone who's never been there before and no where is it posted. But the food, I ordered was the Warm Lobster Roll as well as the Captain John (grilled cheese + pulled pork sandwich). The Lobster roll was buttered to perfection with the bread toasted so it had that amazing crunch to it still and the Lobster tasted so fresh it made the wait all worth it. The grilled cheese toasted so good and a decent size too by themselves its a solid meal.

Google
Simple but elevated. Rustic but charming, not cliché. We stumbled onto this place when we rode out to see the lighthouse. Delightful, relaxed, and loved the lobster melt. Met the owner because we loved the music and he shared his personal Playlists.

Google
Food was amazing! Day was beautiful! Although there was no table service and you must walk to the counter to order, the food came out extremely quick! I was worried at first, concerned about how they made everything so quick, but I was shocked, everything tasted fresh and amazing! My wife got the chowder, I got the warm lobster roll, and my grandmother-in-law got the cold lobster roll. My wife and I shared the chowder and roll and were extremely impressed! We live on the island and have tried plenty of places but this place is easily in my new top 5 for seafood. Everyone was friendly, decorations were cute, place was clean, service was efficient. No complaints 10/10

Google
An excellent spot for lunch before or after visiting Point Prim Lighthouse. Both the clam and seafood chowders were delicious. Don’t forget the biscuit! It’s cafeteria style serving. You order at the front window and find your own seat while you wait for the staff to bring your food out to you. We showed up right before opening and there was already a small lineup. Be prepared, this might be a place where you have to wait for a table and to order.

Google
Don’t miss! Great Food. Great view. Great Staff. Get the steamer ( clams were the best) Lobster roll too! Perfectly prepared.

Google
Hands down the best chowder I've had in P.E.I. and, possibly, anywhere. The view is spectacular, the food is amazing, and the atmosphere is spot on. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Yelp
You feel like you're off the beaten path to this delightful spot but it's worth it. Amazing view, seafood chowder & biscuit. The mussels looked amazing.

Yelp
I can't get over the view from this iconic restaurant. I loved everything about our visit here, from the food to the ambience to the breathtaking view. I would secure one of the seats along the edge of the water, as it give you unobstructed views of the ocean for the meal. Grab a menu, decide and order from the little window at the entrance. You will be given a buzzer, so you can go watch the tide for a bit until the buzzer goes off and your food is ready for pickup. I shared the chowder with a biscuit and the fresh oysters. The chowder was creamy, packed full of ingredients and very filling along with the biscuit. Oysters were amazing and expected from being in PEI. Would have loved to spend the afternoon just watching the tide!

Yelp
This was a great place for lunch right on the water. Delicious seafood chowder and grilled cheese sandwiches. Perfect bread for the grilled cheese - one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. Quick and friendly service.

Yelp
This is the cutest, most fresh, best place to eat on PEI. Everything we had was simply prepared and delicious. If you know good food... this is it! Honestly, this was our best meal in all of PEI & Nova Scotia. We ordered: clams in white wine broth, oysters, and the lobster roll. Order anything on the menu, you can't go wrong.

Yelp
What a lovely spot with a breathtaking view! The place is meticulous and you just want to sit, enjoy a bite and the view! We arrived here in the afternoon after we had lunch but we wanted to try it, so we ordered the clams with garlic sauce and chorizo! Epic!! The flavors were so great and the sauce was refreshing with the garlic and parsley! The service was great and they ensured everything at our liking! A spot to not miss!

Darlene S.

Yelp
Fabulous food great view The service was excellent Highly recommended this restaurant

Yelp
What a beautiful and relaxing spot to sit by the shore! Amazing views, incredibly friendly staff and delicious food! We had the oysters, seafood chowder and some great local beers. Really loved if and highly recommend!

Yelp
Oh my what a spectacular gem this find was. Gorgeous views and off the beaten path but the food was spectacular. Just a short drive from Charlottetown but worth every minute of it. We did not have a reservation. So you could order take out and set at a picnic table along the coast what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. And once your done you can check out Point Prim lighthouse. I had the chowder and lobster roll both were delicious. The chowder was loaded with seafood and flavor. The lobster roll was not shy on the lobster ! Off the beaten path once the the paved road ends don't be worried you are just a couple of minutes away from some seafood goodness

Brenda T.

Yelp
Got here 5 minutes before closing on their last day of the season. They graciously served us the most wonderful biscuits a seafood chowder. I can only imagine how wonderful the rest of the menu must be. Sitting outside within view of the lighthouse by the water was the best. Glad we were able to enjoy a late lunch there.

Yelp
This chowder house has the best Lobster Rolls. Custom made to their order and specifications first off is the flat sided bun. We are Connecticut travelers and the home of the Lobster Roll was Perry's in Milford Connecticut. Perry's is now long gone. However the Point Prim has more than successfully duplicated that historical butter poached Lobster Roll. A small amount of lettuce insulates the "hinge" of the roll and the lobster meat is all tail, knuckle and claw meat. Soaked in butter. The roll is toasted. It is worth the trip to Point Prim and you will not be disappointed at all. Clearly a ROLL ABOVE the norm.... Bravo.

Yelp
Best lobster salad anywhere! Fresh! Bright! Flavorful! And gorgeous location. A favorite place for locals and visitors. You can't go wrong here!

Yelp
This was our best meal and experience in PEI. The location and view would be worth it even if the food weren't as amazing as it is! I went with my husband and kids. Hubby and I both had the clam and potato chowder and the classic lobster roll (no mayo!). As a mayo-hater, I had assumed I would never be able to enjoy a PEI lobster roll so this was an awesome experience! The lobster was plentiful and buttery and on a perfectly toasted roll (garlic on it I think). We finished the meal with the strawberry pound cake which (like everything else) was outstanding. My kids shared the kids pasta (which you'd assume would be just ok but it was an excellent Bolognese better than I could make it!) and the pulled pork sandwich (apparently the best he'd ever had). This is a can't-miss restaurant in my view.

Yelp
Extraordinaire nouriture et superbe vue! Tres bon service et vue imprenable! La chaudrée de fruits de mer avec le " biscuit " maison est absolument délicieux. ------------------------------ Great food and great view! Friendly service and unbeatable view! The Seafood chowder with the homemade biscuit is simply delicious!

Yelp
If you're looking for the ultimate PEI experience, then you absolutely have to get down here! Be sure to call ahead to make reservations as this place is super small and has very limited space. They don't accommodate large crowds and some seating is picnic table only so if you can't fit, you won't get in. They do take 2-3 walk ins every few hours but if you're driving this far, you won't want to take a chance. Very important: the kitchen closes down from 3-330 so they stop taking walk ins around 230. Very reasonably priced and all seating is outdoors under umbrellas or patios overlooking the water. All the seafood dishes you could ever want. We really liked the smoked cod dip and the lobster grilled cheese was big enough for two people so be mindful of good portion sizes. If you don't want to make a reservation, if you don't get in, you can at least check out the lighthouse right next door. Just like the restaurant, the view of the sea is amazing. Either way, come on down because the drive down is a scene out of a movie with beautiful homes and a drive down the middle of the peninsula with the water on either side of you.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant next to the most beautiful view! This was recommended to us by someone who worked at our hotel, he grew up in Point Prim and recommended the restaurant and the light house. If you're from out of town, (such as Toronto like me) be warned that Charlottetown might not feel that warm even in the summer - it is right by the water! That being said, we chose to sit on the patio and the restaurant provided blankets for our laps. We got oysters to start - they were absolutely amazing, so fresh and plump - and I shared a steamer pot with my mom. We switched it to lobster instead of crab - absolutely amazing! Everything was steamed to perfection. If you love steamed food, like my mom and I, definitely get it. We took a walk on the shore and drove up to the lighthouse after, beautiful!

Yelp
This chowder house was so cute - I love that they have a take-out window so you can still try it even if the dine-in reservations are all taken (which they were!). The chowder is excellent and the scenery is perfect, with the lighthouse right nearby. Don't miss it!

Sage D.

Yelp
Amazing location. Unique. Excellent chowder. Beside the oldest lighthouse in PEI. Seals swam in front of us while eating.

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Fantastic food with a great view. Check out the light house and stay for a wonderful meal.

Yelp
The food, the location. Amazing. Great service great people. Can't go wrong with fresh seafood

Kenna D.

Yelp
If you're in the area, you have to come here! The food and view is amazing! We got the chowder, lobster roll and seafood pasta. All were so good. And the lighthouse is right next to the restaurant! Staff was super friendly as well

Yelp
Three reasons to go out of your way to go here: 1. The view 2. The Steamer Pot 3. The friendly owners Make a reservation, as they do have limited seating, and definitely get a table on the deck, because that sunset is worthy of painting.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about this place. First the positive: The view is great, the food was nice (however, it was pricey for what it is). We had the crab cake and a seafood chowder. It wasn't the most amazing we had on the island, but it was good. Negative: Service was slow. Also, the older man (I guess he's a manager or owner or something) seemed a bit racist? I mean, my husband and I weren't even greeted, he gave us a bit of a look, and didn't even tell us about the special when he sat us down and we ordered with him. After our food had already arrived, we hear from the girl waitress that there was a special, which I would have rather had if I'd known about it. As we eat, I see the old guy giving warm greetings to all the caucasian/white customers :/ Maybe it was a coincidence but hey, hard not assume things when we were one of the few tables with ethnic customers. The waitress lady, on the other hand, was warmly greeting the asian family that arrived after us. So maybe it was just that guy.

Chocolate M.

Yelp
Great spot! The food was fresh and delicious. We went after the lunch rush and were served in no time. The ordering/paying was a bit chaotic, as you have people trying to view the menu and order, as well as pay (one line). People were trying to cut in front of you to order, when you wanted to pay (you pay after your meal). Maybe a different pay section would help it run more smoothly. Other than that, we will definitely be back!

Yelp
This restaurant is at an excellent location! The view is one of the best among restaurants I have ever been. Food was great too. Love the warm butter lobster roll. 45mins drive from Charlottetown. It's totally worth it.
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
Amazing view amazing food ! This place is magical we drove all the way out to the top of the island and I felt like a king eating a massive feast we got a lobster roll and a steamed lobster meal which had a piece of salmon clams and mussels. For the price your paying it's amazing to get this much ! And the view is something we absolutely fell in love with ! With our meal we had a ceaser as well and it really tied everything together. Finally we had dessert and I ordered the strawberry pan a vita which felt like heaven in a bite. This place was worth the drive from Montreal ! Must try truly

Yelp
After being to so many different seafood places, I am dare to say the food here is above par but not stunning. Some how both my friend and I thought the food lacks a bit of taste. I am not saying those salt or MSG crap. It is just being at restaurants at Maritime, the fresh seafood are supposed to be amazingly tasty on their own without much additives. Somehow, the lobster roll tasted mostly mayo and the steamer pots are all mostly basil. The defense I would give them is we didn't go there at the middle of lobster season. But that didn't affect the other restaurants we tried on the island. What you can't beat is the view and atmosphere. We sat right beside the sea at the patio with the view of both the point prim light house and beach. That definitely gave them additional points to the experience. The restaurants get really crowded quickly. Try make reservation or go early if you want a good seat. Also they don't open year round so be aware.

Alexis O.

Yelp
Great place for locals and tourists, we had the oysters and seafood chowder and both were delicious. The outdoor seating had a nice view of the ocean and lighthouse and they even provided blankets since it was cold and windy.
google avatar

Chrisstina S.

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow! Stunning location and delicious seafood. This is definitely one of the most beautiful places I've ever eaten at. I cannot wait to go back!
google avatar

Leslie R.

Yelp
Can I eat here every day? Yum yum yum. I had the lobster roll. Excellent!! Filled w lobster w a taste of butter & garlic too. My partner had the Portuguese stew - sooooooo good. Also had a glass or 2 of a fairly local Sauvignon Blanc. The service was excellent. A nice area to walk about on the beach too. You will know you are there when you see the cars parked in a tidy, long line on the side of the road. Well worth the trip on the country road. Thank you to the guests at Summerside Inn B & B who recommended this place.
google avatar

Janice G.

Yelp
Loved it! We stumbled into this place riding out to the lighthouse. Great service and fantastic fresh seafood
google avatar

Norm C.

Yelp
Loved it. My wife and I started with a chowder and it was amazing. Hot, flavorful and filled with smoked salmon, scallops, shrimp, and potatoes. We both had the warm lobster roll. Having never had a lobster roll before I had nothing to compare it too, but it was fantastic. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful view of the water. Great place, highly recommend. Call ahead and make a reservation.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Sitting on the deck enjoying the view is a great way to spend lunch. The food was not as good as the view. It was not bad, just average. Very friendly workers. Good beer selection. Like many places in PEI the wi-fi was poor.
google avatar

Yelp
Two independent sources recommended that we try Prim Point Chowder House. So we made the trip to Prim Point (about half an hour from Charlottetown). The food is excellent. We had the best clam chowder of our holidays here and a lobster roll that was overflowing with great lobster chunks. So the food is five star food, but the restaurant has a front of house approach that makes it feel like a fast food stand. For example, there is a blackboard with lots of choices and on top of that a menu with a number of other choices. You stand around trying to figure out what you want and, in order not to lose your place, jump to a choice before you've really had the chance to take it all in. Having made your choice, you go and find a table and wait for your meal to be served. We ordered beer. It came in a plastic disposable cup. Really? The chowder was actually served in a real bowl, but the lobster rolls are served in some plastic webbed serving bowl like a take out place. When it came to dessert, our server gave us two choices, but there were actually four choices except that no one had told him that the other two were now available. So, Chowder House people, you serve great food. But it's time to up your front of house to a style that the food deserves. This doesn't have to mean a loss of the informality of the place, nor does it mean that you have to have linen table cloths. But table service with menus and a blackboard visible from the tables and real dishes would go a long way to giving you the five star rating you deserve.
google avatar

BC S.

Yelp
The best Halibut! Fresh caught! Garlic bread was very good Mussels were fresh and cooked just perfect! Crab cakes were fresh and packed full of crab and not excess batter! Nothing But Great Food.

Renee N.

Yelp
Definitely can't beat the waterside dining, excellent food, and friendly staff. We were lucky to get seated without a reservation. If they can't seat you, leave your name and number. The owner is happy to give you an estimated time but will text you if something opens up sooner. The Prim Point Lighthouse is right next door so you can take a tour while you wait. The food is so good so wait. We had the mussels in ginger white wine sauce, the crab corn chowder, yellow beet and goat cheese salad and desserts are over the top. We would go back in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Azul H.

Yelp
This is a very popular eating spot. It is found at the end of a short dirt road beside an interesting small lighthouse. If the weather is appropriate, the outside deck/eating areas tend to be swarming with mosquitoes. There is the alternative of limited inside seating. It is right beside the water. We were disappointed with the food; the chowder is lacking in clams and although served very swiftly, it was served tepid. We tried each of the two types of lobster rolls; both were padded with chopped lettuce. The lobster in both cases was tasteless. It tasted as bland as if it had been previously frozen
google avatar

Brittany C.

Yelp
What a magical find. Point Prim Chowder House was spectacular. Nestled just shy of the lighthouse and surrounded by waves crashing on the red sand, this restaurant surpassed our expectations. We drove down the dirt road expecting this place to be empty due to its location. Clearly we were not the first to discover this gem. Our family enjoyed the creamy seafood chowder, curry crab and corn chowder, lemon cream mussels, baked Brie, bow pork and cheddar sandwich, and molasses cookies. There wasn't a single thing that I wouldn't love to eat again and yet the food was so superb that I wish I was able to visit every day to try everything in the menu. The seafood was cooked to perfection with flavor a balanced and seasoned well to highlight every flavor in this simple but delightful menu. In addition to the food, the view and atmosphere cannot be beat. My only regret is that I live 3000 miles away.

Michaela G.

Yelp
We had a great lunch at the Point Prim Chowder House with a nice view today. It was pretty windy but with the provided blankets we didn't feel cold. The lobster roll was delicious and even special wishes were fullfilled by the very friendly waiter. We -even more- got offered a free drink for waiting a few minutes more for one dish. So thankyou for the yummy food and courteous service!

Jason P.

Yelp
One of the worlds great views with food to match. We had an atrocious dinner the night before (New Glasgow Lobster Supper - avoid at all costs). One night later the full 180 degree twist as we end up at one of the worlds great spots. The view is beyond exceptional. Right up there with less than 4-5 other spots that you fondly remember from 25 years ago. Charm oozes out of this building right on the water's edge. Which is where you get to sit. Food is 9.5 out of 10. Seafood heavy, matches the locale and the feel. Simple food, cooked brilliantly. With service to match. Absolutely worth the drive from town. A world class experience and memory. We shall return!

Yelp
Took a country drive out to Point Prim for a lunch with THE MOST AMAZING VIEW on PEI (or at least the most spectacular view of our most recent trip!). Try a Chowderhouse Special Cocktail - I recommend having PEI Moonshine at any opportunity, so here is my fave: MOONSHINE MOJITO ($7) Island distilled shine, house made syrup, fresh mint & soda, on the rocks (um yessss please...) How our orderings broke down: Me: Clam Chowder, Grilled Cheese, Salad Mr. Rosie S.: Mussels, Lobster Roll, Salad Mr. Friend: Chowder, Lobster Roll Mrs. Friend: Lobster Roll, Salad Shared: Oysters Every single dish was delicious, simple and masterful. Nothing too heavy, nothing overdone. LOVE. We also watched the tide go out over the course of our meal... island PERFECTION! Service was great. Everyone (staff and other patrons alike) enjoyed the toddler in our party and his dancing around other tables! We found great shells on a detour to the beach (tide now out) on our way back to the car which is an extra bonus to visiting! This basically sums it up, as posted on their walls: "We have a motto: 'IF IT'S NOT FROM HERE, IT'S NOT HERE!' "

Yelp
There are places that can get away with mediocre food because of an amazing view. And others that can get away with mediocre ambiance because of amazing food. But this place has it all. The restaurant itself is super cute. The view is unbelievable. And the food is perfect. The Acadian chowder was incredible. The clam chowder...perfect. The kid's Mac and cheese was delicious. Even the kid's noodles and butter was well cooked and tasty. Great service. Can't say enough good things
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
This is a must go restaurant if you are visiting Charlottetown. Located at the point prim next to the light house I experienced very delicious fish and salad. Good quality, fresh and tasty. I fully recommend it to all.
google avatar

G P.

Yelp
I could say this place is small and out of the way and don't go there because you'll get red mud on your car but that would be totally unfair to this wonderful place. Our first time to PEI, we were on our way to the ferry near by and wanted to grab dinner. We got "stuck" with a table outside by the ocean as the sun was setting and a gentle, warm breeze blew in from the east. Waiting for the baked oysters and lobster rolls, the time seemed to stand still. Ambiance is not a word that can describe this charming little place. The food was fresh, delicious and the staff were friendly as they come in the island. Make reservations as we just managed to get a table.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Family went here for lunch. Friendly service, great food and amazing view. Had the chowder and classic mussels. Some of the best chowder I have ever had
google avatar

Ben D.

Yelp
We had the clam chowder which was fabulous. The views are wonderful too as the place is overlooking the Northumberland Straight. There's a really charming lighthouse across the street. This is a family run business and the owners make you feel at home. The crab legs are also delicious. The rustic atmosphere is welcoming, the service good and the food is fantastic.
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
What a place! Chowder heaven - they've got at least three different types on the menu at any given time. If you get the steamer pot, everything in it is cooked to perfection (because it's not just all thrown in at the same time). Beautiful view, as well.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Good little place to eat but we were here two years ago and I enjoyed it better. The steamed clams in a simple wine and butter sauce is what brought us back but they changed it by adding chorizo. Can't figure that one out. If you love Vera the strong spicy taste of chorizo then you'd probably be fine with it but not my cup of tea. The seafood stem was filled with seafood but again with the chorizo? Lost me this year.
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Incredible. The ambiance is perfect, the views are breathtaking and the food is top notch. I had the crab cakes which were possibly the best I've ever had. My wife had the halibut which was succulent and seasoned to perfection. Aim to get there at sunset to see some truly magical colours.

Bev W.

Yelp
I walked in there and the man (owner or manager) looked at me like I didn't belong... No greeting, nothing. Thank you very much!? If you plan to go there on a week-end you better have reservations or you will be sent to the picnic tables or offered a seat inside. The chalkboard is a mess and very difficult to read. I had the chilled lobster roll and cole slaw salad, it was delicious. My husband had the crab cakes. We were both happy with our meals. I felt very uncomfortable there and wouldn't go back inside after the first encounter with "that" man and believe me, I am not shy! Maybe he was having a bad evening or something. But, when customers arrive, I would like to know that we are wanted. Would I go back? Yes. Hoping that the reception is a bit more friendly.
