Standing proudly at the top of king st, right next to another excellent local called Saigon Saigon, Potli makes things difficult for itself by being slap bang in the middle of a number of excellent local Indian restaurants. From the cheap as chips authentic veggie Sagar, to the rather swisher but just as friendly Indian zing, to the totally upmarket Zaika. And there are literally tens of very decent ones in between. In fact Zing is just 30 secs walk away and has built itself a fine reputation. So this place needs to be on it's mettle to last the course. And it is.
A warm interior with comfy furniture and fixtures and fitting welcomes you, along with smiling patron and great aromas.
A basket of popudums isn't your ubiquitous salty cardboard. It's a selection of delicate wafers with delicious spices and chutneys to ladle on. Great start and you know you're in for a treat.
A couple of starters continued the good eating. Pani puri were delicate pockets of crisp filled with masala potato. Lamb chops were robustly spiced and burnt round the edges just like they should be. Tandoori chicken came without the orange disco glow usually associated with the dish. Instead it came like it does when made at home. Much paler, much more tender, much more subtle flavours. I could taste the chicken. result.
for the mains the missus was in typically unadventurous mood and went for the chicken makhani, which is as they inform you basically chicken tikka masala. You will find a few of the old favourites on the menu but rest assured they aren't all made in the same single underground trough that supplies the whole of Brick Lane. I had a mutton curry on the bone. Bravely served exactly as stated and right up my street. The boy carried on gnawing at the lamb chops. The sauces were rich and the spices all held their place in the mouth instead of becoming a messy hotch poch. I would say, lovingly cooked. even expertly. The accompanying bread was light and full of taste.
Stuffed solid, we asked for the bill, rejoiced that it was under £50 even though I had 2 beers (kingfisher on tap, Cobra in bottles) and rolled home like barrels, our mouths dancing with flavours well into the night.
We passed Zing on the way back. It was full as usual. We wondered whether Potli might alleviate it of a few customers in future. Both places deserve their support. They are excellent.
