Prose - Review - Woodland Hills - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Prose has taken over the former Gasolina Cafe in Woodland Hills and the new interior reminds us of a cozy cabin, complete with deer heads on the wall. The menu filled with “global influences" is a bit hard to categorize, but includes  “Tokyo-style” beef carpaccio, sweet potato gnocchi, and a wild mushroom and sunchoke pot pie. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Cathy Park

Prose is a San Fernando Valley gem! It felt like dining in the home of your chic & eclectic friend. The interior was vibrant and beautiful. Very good food & excellent service. Start with the house made biscuits with honey butter! We also enjoyed the octopus (perfect texture w/ a kick), citrus crudo, crab & lemon pasta (made in house!) and yummy chicken thighs. The only con, in my opinion, is there isn’t a full service bar. There’s a nice selection of beer & wines but a cocktail would’ve been a nice accompaniment. A must try if you’re in the area and worth the drive if you’re not!

Hidden new gem in Woodland Hills! Prose Kitchen & Bar blew me away. It’s in this quaint little corner on Ventura Blvd—classy but unpretentious. Chef David came out personally to greet us, which made it feel even more special. We kicked off with the Cheddar Chive Biscuits—fantastic. Tokyo Style" Beef Carpaccio and the Black Garlic Charred Octopus—honestly, the octopus had a flavor I’ve never tasted before, in the best way possible. Super creative. All got a great selection of Italian reds, which paired beautifully with the dishes. And I have to mention the Anthony Bourdain photo on the wall—resonating with patrons who appreciate culinary artistry and storytelling. 😎 Definitely coming back. Class, comfort, and incredible food.

Prose just opened in Woodland Hills by a chef with local roots. The restaurant is perfect for a date night, after hours meal or dinner with family/friends. The atmosphere is chic with classic rustic modern vibes. I really enjoyed our server Greg, he took his time giving us a background on the restaurant and going through the menu, sharing his favorite items so far. What I found very interesting is that although we had a server other servers checked on us as well - which makes the overall experience warm and friendly. I hope you go and enjoy it’s nice to have an other great option to dine locally in the area 🥰. I forgot to add that the bar made me my own drink that wasn’t on the roster!!! Just another example of the service you can expect.

All the food was tasty and beautifully presented. The lamb dish was outstanding—highly recommended! Looking forward to my next meal at Prose.

This is a new restaurant in the SFV. These little cheddar chive biscuits were quite cute and tasty. The octopus was very tender which was great but the Asian flavors didn't work well. We thought it was a mole but we were wrong. The beet salad was nice. I enjoyed the squash blossoms because they were different than most I've had. The Caesar salad was fresh & crisp. The hanger steak was good just not special. The pana cotta was refreshing. The lemon granita was the kicker. Very small and tight restaurant. Staff were all very nice. Chef made his table rounds. They are busy!

Welcome to a new jem in West Valley! Just had a fabulous dinner with friends last night at Prose. We were greeted by the hostess and the owner, chef David, before we were seated at a booth table. It was a pleasure seeing the chef going around tables, meeting locals, and getting feedback. We decided to share several appetizers and ordered each main dish. We brought our special bottle of wine, $35 cork fee, howerever, their own slection was great, too. The management is working on getting a liquor license, which will be a great addition. All the apps were wonderful; we enjoyed tokyo style carpaccio with some biscuits, beet salad with labneh, and zucchini blossoms. We also enjoed chefs spin on lasagna, which I loved with lots of short rib and so much flavor. My husband enjoyed crab pasta, which apparently is their popular dish already. We ordered few glasses of their french wine, which did not disappoint. For a dessert, since we were celebrating a birthday, they brought out delishious chocolate cake with caramel and ice cream. Considering that they were open only a week or so, they did very well. The service was great, not rushed, and well organized with attentive staff. The place is beautifully decorated and cozy, awesome for small family and friends gatherings, intimate dinner, and such. We are definitely coming back to try more of Chef David creations. Make reservations as this place will get popular very fast.

Had to try the new place in Woodland Hills. Was not to sure what to expect. We order 4 plates and 2 desserts. From all 6 plates, we had 3 favorites. Beef carpaccio, sweet potato gnocchi, and the dark chocolate dessert. We will be coming back to try new dishes.

A Culinary Gem in the San Fernando Valley!! Prose Kitchen + Bar is a new restaurant in Woodland Hills. The owners and husband and wife duo, Chef David and Molly Gussin designed this restaurant to captivate your senses - where elegance meets comfort. Elevated California cuisine with global influences and seasonally inspired dishes. It is beautifully and impeccably decorated. Intimate and cozy. An exceptional dining experience with dynamic flavors!! We tried: Cheddar Chive Biscuits (MUST-TRY) Citrus Cured Hamachi 'Globe' (showstopper) Steak Frites Roasted Mary's Chicken Sticky Toffee Date Pudding (MUST-TRY) Top notch service, well organized and very attentive staff! They are now open daily for lunch from 11:30am to 3pm. Open until 9pm Sunday-Wednesday and until 9:30pm Thursday-Saturday. Parking: There is a 20-space parking lot with Prose's sign, located at the corner of Comercio and Constanso.

Yelp
You can clearly see the love that was put into opening Prose. Executive Chef, David has put his heart and soul into opening this little gem in Woodland Hills, which is evident by the smile that lights up his face every time he stepped in front of the kitchen window. Slowly, the West San Fernando Valley has added new, innovative, and upscale dinner spots, but the one thing it's been lacking are bistro style restaurants. Now there's Prose, serving California cuisine in a beautiful quaint location on the corner of Ventura Blvd. and Comercio Lane. Our dinner began with an amuse bouche - cheddar chive biscuits served with honey butter. Those tasty morsels we're not enough for us so we ordered the bigger version of the biscuits to start. Served three per order, these buttery biscuits melt in your mouth. Next up the Gem Ceasar salad - a classy dish, but not the star of the show - and Za'atar-Roasted Carrots garnished with pomegranate seeds. The carrots, roasted and seasoned to perfection, where a delightful dish. For mains we shared the Miso-Glazed Black Cod with coconut black rice, which was scrumptious. I savored every bite of the sweet and salty sauce on which the rice laid. The second dish, the Short Rib Lasagna, was a nice take on the classic. With tender short rib and a decadent mascarpone topping, this a lighter version that is strong. Finally, we ended dinner with Sticky Toffee Pudding with a butterscotch sauce, and vanilla gelato. A very good wrap up to a terrific meal.

Yelp
Woodland Hills just leveled up, folks. David and Molly Gussin have officially knocked it out of the park with Prose Kitchen & Bar, and let me tell you, our neighborhood has been starving for a spot like this. This stretch of Ventura Blvd. needed a little extra elegance, and Prose delivers--big time. Let's talk about Chef David Gussin. The man is basically a rock star in the kitchen. He's honed his craft in some of the best restaurants in the country--STK, Cleo, Fig & Olive--so you know he means business. And now? He's blessing Woodland Hills with his culinary wizardry. The vibe? Imagine walking into an intimate, upscale dining experience that also feels like your most sophisticated friend's home den or library. Cozy yet refined atmosphere--it's the kind of place that makes you want to sip a fancy cocktail while pretending you read The Great Gatsby (but really, you're just here for the food). Speaking of food... wow. Just wow. We went on opening night for our 10-year anniversary, and you'd never guess it was their first service. Everything ran smoother than a seasoned kitchen. The staff? Absolute pros. Shoutout to our server, Allison, who was amazing. She knew the menu inside and out, kept us entertained (yes, we bonded over the movie Twilight--she's a fellow Twi-hard - and laughed about Michael Sheen's character in Breaking Dawn), and made our toddler feel like a VIP. Now for the food--because that's why we're really here, right? Cheddar Chive Biscuits - Light, flaky, and flavorful. These make Red Lobster's biscuits look like amateur hour. Crispy Squash Blossoms - If I could eat one thing for the rest of my life, it might be these. Stuffed with Poblano, melted Oaxaca cheese, charred corn salsa, and drizzled with chipotle crema, they basically melted in my mouth like that exploding brain meme. Pear & Roasted Squash Salad - A perfect mix of baby arugula, roasted delicata squash, poached pears, whipped ricotta, and spiced pecans. Fall in a bowl. Roasted Mary's Chicken - Perfectly cooked, juicy, and that jus? Next level. Sticky Toffee Date Pudding - One word: AMAZEBALLS. The final touch? The check comes in a clever wooden book cover--such a cool detail that ties everything together. This place has thought of everything. And the best part? The price point is spot on. You're getting top-tier food without the pretentious price tag. David and Molly Gussin aren't just running a restaurant; they're creating an experience. They're also just genuinely wonderful people, and I really hope Prose stays in the neighborhood for a long, long time. Final Verdict: Ambience: 5/5 Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Price: 5/5 Woodland Hills, you just got a new must-visit spot.

Yelp
A+ across the bar for ambiance, service, flavor, value, quality. There aren't enough intimate, elevated, family owned dining spots in the Valley but Prose is a charming stands out with an impressive menu from Woodland Hills locals, Dave and Molly Gussin. The menu is a journey that eases you into a culinary experience, encouraging guests to stay a while, take your time. There's something warm about the atmosphere. It's a combination of the cozy design and the pleasant service. Our server Allison was an attentive conversationalist that added to the quality of the experience. Now for the food. We started with the cheddar chive biscuits.... They were light and flaky and flavorful. Our LO couldn't get enough. I almost ordered some to-go for home later. The pear and roasted squash salad was divine. So much flavor in one plate. The Za'atar carrots were another pleaser (especially the pistachio crumble). Then... the star of the show. The crispy squash blossoms were mouthwatering; light and crispy with a smoky heat that lingers. Roasted Mary's chicken... it was cooked and plated to perfection, crispy and delicious with a jus that took it over the top. Despite being stuffed, we had to try the dessert. Highly recommend the sticky toffee date pudding. A perfect end to a beautiful culinary experience. Honestly, for an opening night, I can't believe how seamlessly things moved and how well the intention behind the experience resonated. Even the bill was delivered within the storybook concept. I'm really pleased to have a place like Prose in our neighborhood.

Yelp
This place opened right down the street from me and now I'm going to be there all the time! Everything was delicious, everything! Biscuits came out warm with butter, our appetizers and dinner were both incredible. Kudos to the chef and thank you for opening so close to our house! Oh and for having a kids menu! Love that we can have a fancy dinner and the kids get their picky eating habits taken care of as well. Super family friendly but also filled with class. Will be going frequently.

Yelp
Outstanding experience the entire dinner. The service was great, the food is excellent and probably will emerge as the best restaurant in the valley in no time. The ambiance and vibe is amazing! We were blown away from start to finish. The appetizers and drinks were delicious and the main courses were too. The Valley finally got a good one!

Yelp
Prose checks every critical box when determining what makes a great restaurant. Amazing food. Comfortable seating. Perfect lighting. Just the right noise level. Great staff and service. This is such a welcome addition to the Woodland Hills neighborhood and there is no need to travel over the hill for a great dining experience.

Yelp
We live nearby and were surprised to see that Prose is already open! We were excited to try it. We walked in without a reservation on a Sun night. No wait, we sat at the counter. It turned out to be opening night, exciting! Service was very attentive and food came out fast. We tried the squash blossoms (unique Mexican inspired twist), biscuits (indulgent), hamachi (refreshing), beet salad (well balanced), and lasagne (to die for). The chef/owner said hello and was working hard keeping all the orders coming out on time. This place is clearly a labor of love! Free parking too. We will be back soon.

Yelp
Can't wait to come back! I came for dessert and was so impressed. The dark chocolate torte was everything I wanted it to be! I love decor- the rich green walls and I got to sit in this adorable mini booth for two :) Great service- I can't wait to bring my besties for lunch or dinner!

Yelp
Let me set the scene for you...as soon as you walk into Prose you're hit with the beautiful forest green walls, elegant and modern decor, a friendly staff and incredible aromas. Upon being seated at your table, you're greeted by knowledgeable and cheerful staff and a carefully curated beer and wine menu. Please try the Sancerre, it's a gorgeous French white that does not disappoint! and now for the food... As the appetizers come out, you will not believe the level of care, thoughtfulness and artistry that goes into each dish. I can't recommend the Hamachi Crudo enough, I have been thinking about it ever since. And please do yourself a favor and sample the Octopus and the Beef Carpaccio. Chef David is able to coerce incredible flavors out of classic ingredients and dishes alike, giving them an edge and modern twist. The sauces he creates are honestly magical! The flavors are bright and fresh yet utterly familiar. His food at Prose is like coming home after a long time away and having that familial dish that tells you "welcome back!" Please take my advice and run DONT WALK to try their incredible burger. I have tried almost every top and up-and-coming burger in Los Angeles (being that I am born and bred here,) and their burger topped the charts, beating out Petit Trois, Heavy Handed, The Mulholland and Goldburger. And if you still have room, please don't hesitate to try the Steak Frites or the Gnocchi, which felt like a warm hug on a chilly Autumn day. The meal ended with fabulous desserts--decadent and elevated enough for the adults but accessible enough for the kids too! I left full and deeply satisfied after a wonderful time here. My experience at Prose was all around a sensational one! Get yourself there now!!

Yelp
The west end of the valley has been in need of a restaurant like Prose Kitchen and Bar. The atmosphere is a perfect balance of moody and sexy, yet warm and inviting. It feels welcoming the minute you walk in the door and the owners as well as servers are professional, friendly and attentive. Between the four of us we tried the octopus and squash blossom appetizers which were both excellent. For our mains we ordered the miso glazed black cod, steak frites and braised short rib rolled lasagna. They were all delicious and the presentations were very nice. While we don't usually order dessert we were on a roll and decided to try the sticky toffee date pudding. It was well worth the calories! Given the fact that the restaurant is brand new our expectations were not high. Having said that we had what was probably one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we've had in a very long time.

Yelp
Wonderful new addition to the neighborhood! The food was delicious with lots of attention to small details. The vibe is super cool casual and hip. It's a perfect place for a date night or simply a family dinner. Don't miss the biscuits as they're the best I've ever had! We also love the noise level, which was just right with some soft music and you could hear each other speak. Highly recommend this wonderful new restaurant.

Marya F.

Yelp
The food is phenomenal. I was not even hungry, but got 3 appetizers, Hamachi , octopus, and pear & beet salad, all were amazing. the sauces of each appetizer were so good and the white Pinot was just a perfect suggestion by Greg, our knowledgeable server. The prices are very reasonable & they've a nice kid's menu. I'll go here again & again & again. Thank you David & Molly. You've created a wonderful community hang out.

Yelp
Prose is the new must try restaurant in Woodland Hills! Not only was the food incredible, the octopus and the steak frites are must haves, the service was beyond amazing and the overall ambiance is exactly what a sophisticated yet inviting restaurant should be. I will be recommending this restaurant to every single person I know! I cannot be more excited to have this new go-to spot right around the corner.
