I know - you're probably wondering why I would eat pizza in Japan, but our friend who went da Michele with us in Italy recommended PST. The Roppongi location is the newer, bigger spot.
It wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be on a Saturday night. Our hotel made a reservation for us by phone, and they were able to get us a spot 2 days out. Most of the people there seemed to be tourists / expats / English speakers.
They have wine, beer, and basic cocktails. I had a pretty good gamay (they're doing a thank you promotion on your first glass right now since he made the Michelin guide). Then I tried the Sangiovese, which was definitely not as good as the gamay.
Amuse:
Mushroom soup
Pizzas:
- Tamaki: smoked mozzarella, cherry tomato
- Bismarck: mozzarella, mushrooms, sausage, pecorino, egg
The pizzas themselves were great. The crust had the right amount of chewiness and bubbles while still being light, and it was nicely salted. If you look on the bottom of the crust, it also had the nice leopard print appearance. The crust is thin but holds up nicely to the toppings.
Of the two pizzas, the Tamaki was my favorite. We got both as full sized pizzas, but you can get smaller half sized ones, too. Full sized pizzas run around ¥2100, while half sized ones around ¥1300.
I appreciate that chef Tamaki paced the timing of the pizzas so that we could enjoy one at a time warm.
Their red peppers for the pizza definitely have a kick - they're great on the pizza, but be judicious with your use.
Additional Notes:
- Prior notes said cash only, but they take credit card now
- There is a ¥300 cover charge per person
- Free WiFi.
In the end, it was around ¥8000 for 2 pizzas and 3 glasses of wine (2 of which were priced at only
¥500 for the current promotion).
It definitely felt a little bit like being back in the US. Chef Tamaki's crust is legit, and I was really happy with our meal.
If you're looking for something other than Japanese food while in Tokyo, PST is a great option.
