"Pupusería Metapán is where to go when your fridge is offensively empty and you’d rather square off with a coyote than go to the grocery store. The Excelsior spot does great Salvadoran staples in a lowkey space, including fragrant, golden-brown pupusas that ooze with cheese. But when you’re not in the mood for masa, the other dishes, like a steaming sopa de res with flavor-packed broth, are also worth your time. Open until 10:30pm daily, this place is also a great late (ish) night option on this stretch of Mission Street. photo credit: Melissa Zink Food Rundown photo credit: Melissa Zink Revuelta Crisp edges, gooey insides, and perfectly salty pork can be yours if you go with the revuelta. The generous bowl of accompanying curtido is zippy and acidic in all the right ways. photo credit: Melissa Zink Sopa De Res Loaded with the requisite garden’s worth of corn, cabbage, and carrots, this soup is a filling and comforting option—especially if it’s big-scarf weather out." - Julia Chen

"Excelsior has a large Central American population and many Salvadoran bakeries and pupuserias, and Metapan is a cozy family-run restaurant on Mission. The pupusas are excellent, fork-raking crispy on the outside, and stuffed with beans, cheese, pork, or in the case of the revuelta, all three. The pastelitos, tamales, and other comforts are satisfying, too." - Becky Duffett

"A favorite for those in the Excelsior, this Salvadoran bakery brings tamales and pupusas to the holidays by staying open all throughout the season. Don’t sleep on the simple yet decadent fare, such as the revuelta pupusa, a combo of beans, cheese, and pork." - Paolo Bicchieri, Eater Staff

"The pupusas were fork-raking crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, stuffed with many different fillings, from camarones to chicharrones, zucchini or queso; the revuelta that’s a triple mashup of pork, beans, and cheese; or the loca that’s fully loaded with a large number of those things." - Eater Staff

Google
Rating based on quality of food. Ordered #1 breakfast plate for delivery. Platanos completely not ripe, cooked only on the outside. Embarrassing to release food from any establishment of this quality at any price point. It hurts even more when you’ve built up an appetite, I had 4-5 bites off the plate. The beans are too watery for my liking but tasted good. (As an FYI, the curtido from here has a good spicy kick.)

Google
I was about to get plantains, but was warned that they were not ripe enough, so I appreciate the warning and got pupusas instead. I must say that I was very satisfied with the pupusas! They tasted very good and the salsa made it much better. Very thankful for the amazing food!

Google
I noticed some reviews mentioning that the servers were being rude. It might be luck but at least they were nice to me and my family. The food didn’t take too long and it tasted pretty good! I would recommend the pupusas with frijoles and queso.

Cesar Lemus

Google
Great food, Pupusas are *really* close to the quality my grandma makes (shh don't tell her.) love the side dishes, good curtido. Can be a bit slow to get attention, but well worth it. I need to return here soon.

Angeles Rodriguez

Google
Super hungry, but those pupusas were SUPER salty that we could NOT eat them, believe me were so spicy Salty taste, super thin, very greasy, could not taste the cheese nor the meat and were also burned. NOT worthy for that price! Not mentioning the waiting 50 min.

Google
Good place to have a decent salvadorean food .

This is one of my favorite Salvadorian places to eat, if you're in a rush this is not your spot. They take their time in making the food.

Google
-- -- shoddy experience You be the judge 😂 😂 😂 Yucca con chicharron, where is the chicharron??? -- For a minute I thought the grubhub driver ate some of my chicharrones and then curtido was like several days old. I strongly believe the customer service has plenty of room for improvement.

Yelp
I will start by saying how much I like pupusas. My first entry into Pupuseria Metapan was on a whim. So many restaurants are nearby there that have similar menus, but varying prices. I ordered (en Espanol) two different types. I got to practice speaking Spanish. The server spoke very limited English. No big deal or major challenge. My two choices were yummy and affordable. Both costing less than $5. First choice was Revuelta, has beans, fried pork, and cheese inside. Freshly made and piping hot. Second choice was made with Maiz Morado/purple corn. With cheese and zucchini inside. They were large too. Quite filling. I enjoy the tasty pickled slaw and bag of hot sauce that accompany each order. Next time I will try their fried plantains. Another dish I adore.

Yelp
This is is a very great place to eat pupusas and the carne guisada is awesome! Valet parking is free and all the time they have a fresh

Yelp
First time eating at a pupuseria & this restaurant did not disappoint... Their servings come in great portions & it comes out fresh to eat... We came 30 mins before closing & the they were super nice to still serve is without making us feel rushed with our food. The ambiance inside is pretty cute & simple... perfect ambiance for the type of food they sell! I'd actually be willing to come back next time!

Julian M.

Yelp
Damn good pupusas, the best I've had in SF. Wide variety on offer and yummy sides too.

Ashley B.

Yelp
The bean and cheese pupusa with the plantains!! Soooooo good! Great service - fast. I also like the ambiance. Amigoso.

April Z.

Yelp
Started coming here years ago because the pupusas weren't greasy and had great flavor. Honestly don't know what happened but the past two times have just been blah... I open the boxes to find the cheese has completely leaked out while cooking and is now a crispy piece on the side leaving barely any cheese still inside the pupusa. The curtido has absolutely no flavor but still adds a nice crunch. So disappointed in whatever change was made recently. Doesn't help that the waitresses inside aren't the nicest even when you're just picking up your order.

Araceli D.

Yelp
Pésimo servicio y atención Orden equivocada Las pupusas todas quemadas Definitivamente no recomiendo este lugar Muy mal servicio El baño dañado no había ni papel para secarse las manos Ni papel de baño Horrible no volvería nunca más

Alejandra L.

Yelp
I been there few times, first time I went the pupusas good flavor good shape but last time so disappointed! Soy de El Salvador y nunca en mi vida me había comido una pupusa tan gruesa y con la orilla casi cruda! Extremadamente grande y gruesa estás no sin pupusas auténticas si siguen de ese tamaño! The service the lady no friendly at all! The ambiance pretty common like other salvadoreño restaurant.

Alyssa S.

Yelp
I originally found this place on DoorDash because they deliver to me but we have continued going here. We all love their pupusas and usually get cheese, Revueltas or chicharron and cheese. They do charge $5 for additional curtido but the amount they give you is more than sufficient.

Diana R.

Yelp
Pupusas are super good the taste is amazing. I don't know why it only has 3 stars the masa is super soft and fresh!!

Veronica V.

Yelp
Terrible establishment. The pupusas are okay. Sometimes they're really good, sometimes they're inedible I think they may have different cooks but the attitude one of the waitress gives is always absolutely horrible. I'm not sure of her name but she's the bigger one . She's has always been Very unwelcoming-never greets and will blatantly ignore you when you walk in/ or ask her questions. Almost as if you're bothering her by being there. I've seen her treat other customers horrible as well so I know it's not a one off experience . Will not be returning.

Gary G.

Yelp
I live in Los Angeles, I took my mom to SF and we were looking to have pupusas. This place is a hidden gem! Authentic food from El Salvador. The horchata is so delicious!

Shujaa S.

Yelp
This is my first visit to this establishment. Came here this Labor Day weekend and was served by Gladis S. First off she was very inpatient and when we asked her questions about the menu she seemed bothered and rudely answered back. Once we get our order of pupusas, not only were they not fully cooked, but they were very bland. Not sure I will be coming back nor I am recommending this to anyone else. Try Los Panchos instead if you truly want to have good service and better tasting pupusas.

Martha D.

Yelp
Ordered through door dash 3 cheese and loroco pupusas. Very dissapointed such a simple order could be confused. I received 3 beans and cheese pupusas! Yhey were deliciius but there is a reason for what I ordered..DIABETES!!

Sheila P.

Yelp
I needed a big order of pupusas in bulk and the owner was very accommodating at making them in short notice. I work at a school and needed 120 pupusas for an honor roll celebration. They packed four big trays for me, easy for transportation, along with containers of salsa and big ziplock bags of curtido. This made it very easy for us to also serve them as everything was ready to go. I have always gone to them for years for tasty pupusas as they have so many various options of the fillings inside. I was surprised to see the price for each pupusa go up, but that was mostly every place that I called in the area due to inflation. Definitely recommend if you love pupusas!

Samantha G.

Yelp
05/31/24 If I could leave 0 stars I would. Everything was so flavorless and bland. The server with the gem stud lip piercing was incredibly rude and disrespectful. My friend and I ordered caldo de pollo and caldo de res with 2 pupusas each as well as yuca. When the order arrived we realized that the pupusas were not the right order so we kindly told the waitress with the piercing that there was an error and she looked at me and told me in Spanish "well you thought you ordered that but you must have thought it but didn't say it I was right and that is what you ordered." And proceeded to argue that she was correct when we clearly ordered something different and refused to fix the order. I've never had that type of service or response to an error in the order which was the simplest fix. The table behind us waited by a different waitress also had an error in their order but she didn't give them a sassy rude response and took the order back to fix. I don't know if our waitress was having a bad day but that's no way to treat a customer. We did not finish the meal. The rude waitress was laughing and looking back at our table like it was a joke. I don't understand what's so funny when you're trying to keep a restaurant open. I've never had Curtido that tasted like cabbage and water ever in my life. The caldo was so bland and lacking flavor that I had to add salt which I NEVER do. The pupusas were thick and stiff. The yuca was under cooked and hard when it is suppose to be soft on the inside. The salsa that came with the pupusas was flavorless and watered down. I paid $67 dollars for terrible rude service and very bland food which was a disappointment and waste of money. There are other Salvadoran restaurants in the area with better service with authentic flavors. Don't waste your time.

Jose M.

Yelp
Bad interaction, more than 45min for 3 pupusas... Negative environment with staff... Also they will act like they don't see you when you been waiting for a long time... be aware about this restaurant

Stephen W.

Yelp
Very tasty and reliable Salvadoran food. The prices are good and the quality is solid. If you like yucca root you will love this place. The pupusas are excellent. The sopa de pata is a standout as well. You have many great options eating here. Even the fresh-made tortillas are great.

Joey M.

Yelp
Omg guys if you come to the city and don't stop by this place your fxxxn ..bad it is the number one good food place..try it today if not your a ******

Ziyan C.

Yelp
I saw this place on an Eater list of restaurants in Excelsior (my neighborhood), and Metapan was one of the few I haven't been to. This spot is fine, but I'm not sure what makes it especially stand out from the couple other pupuserias in the neighborhood. Their pupusas are large and will fill you up, but I found the filling to not be quite balanced. THE WAIT No wait on a Friday at noon. It was empty but there were several takeout/delivery pickups. Several of us ordered takeout, and I appreciate that they prepared all of our food to be ready at the same time. THE COST About $45 total for two pupusa plates, one starter, and one additional pupusa. THE FOOD * Pastelitos Beef ($6 for two) - 4 stars. Nice crispy crunch, good flavor! PUPUSAS * Cheese w/ Loroco (a flower) pupusa - 3 stars. A little heavy on the cheese, which was pretty congealed. * Chicharron (deep fried pork) w/ cheese - 3 stars. Meat had a decent crunch, but it tasted a little old. * Zucchini w/ cheese pupusa - 3.5 stars. * Beans & Chicharron - 3 stars. A little heavy on the beans. * Jalapeno w/ cheese - 3 stars. For me, too heavy on the jalapeno flavor (slightly bitter), but if you like that, go for it! (My partner liked it more and gives this 3.5 stars.)

Yelp
I preface this review because I have only ordered delivery from this restaurant (but it has been multiple times). I really love pupusas. I have been attracted to the menu at Pupuseria Metapan because they offer a lot of vegetarian variety in their pupusa stuffing options, including jalapeño and cheese, spinach (unclear if it comes with cheese), and zucchini and cheese. My orders have consistently had issues, most recently they under fried the plantains and burned two pupusas; making most of the meal unappealing. I have also experienced a pupusa with way too much zucchini and no cheese (the ratio was off), and the casamiento (rice and beans) had al dente beans. This is one of the few pupuserias that deliver, and I am hoping they can take the feedback and improve their food quality, because we need pupusas delivery and we want to support local businesses!

Just My Opinion R.

Yelp
Service is horrible. Placed order over the phone. Was told that order was going to be ready in 30 min. Arrived and and was asked to pay. So I did. had to wait another 45 min in the restaurant! Insane. Never again.

Joseph A.

Yelp
Given the crowd of Central Americans eating here it's a good bet the Pupusas here are authentic. With prices ranging mostly $3 - $3.50 for a generous Pupusa and tasty sides this is my favorite option when in the Mission. There is plenty of inside seating and they are open past 10pm with street parking not being impossible in the evening. I really enjoyed their Cheese, Pork and Veg options and the wait was not to long for a Yummy Dinner to show up on the table. The only real challenge I find here is the staff I have interacted with have had very limited English comprehension skills, but I still managed to get the items I wanted so all is good.

Claudia R.

Yelp
This is a good Salvadorean food place. Don't @ me about Salvadorean vs. Salvadoran. I have eaten inside the restaurant pre-pandemic and take-out or via delivery app post-pandemic. In general, it is better to eat there vs. take out or delivery app. But, when you can't eat in, I strongly recommend reviewing the menu and calling in your order an hour before you plan to eat. The ambiance and service are just ok. Metapan is a super casual place, and the staff are strictly business. Meaning, not super friendly, but not rude, either. The food is pretty tasty. I've had pupusas, chile relleno de carne (plate), pastelitos (chicken, pork), platanos fritos, yuca con chicharrones, chilate con nuegados, caldo de res and empanadas. The ingredients are fresh, and my favorite thing is the chicharrones are meaty, not super hard. Chile rellenos are my favorite Mexican dish, but the Salvadorean chile relleno is stuffed with meat & vegetables. The Metapan chile was delicious! The only disappointment was the size; it was tiny. I wish the chile was bigger. If you love Salvadorean food and dishes with flavor in a casual environment, you should go!

Chance K.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from this restaurant to satisfy a craving for pupusas and were pleasantly surprised by the quality & value. They have a nice selection of different flavors; we split four (Garlic, Black Corn, Chicharron, and Chicken) which was plenty for 2 people, along with a side of plantains. The pupusas are tasty, although don't contain too much filling, and come served with a generous helping of curtido (pickled slaw) and salsa. You don't need to order a side of curtido unless you really want extra. Although not the fault of the restaurant, the Salvadorian soda in my opinion was not very drinkable, it's vaguely bubblegum-flavored and overly sweet.

Don B.

Yelp
Love this place! Best papusas and plaintains Sometimes the curdito is a bit too spicy for my gringo tongue, but I take the peppers out.

Mari D.

Yelp
HORRIBLE service and UNSANITARY! My boyfriend's family loved this place until recently. We ordered for Mother's Day. I was in communication with my Uber eats driver most of the time. I called to get a follow up of my order after 45 min of it saying that my order was "being prepared". They told me my order was almost done and hung up on me! They purposely ignored my next call 20 minutes later. My driver said they were talking about me and not to answer the phone. I wasn't rude and they hung up on me! The driver told me they told her that they forgot about my order that's why it took so long. Fast forward, I got the food and there was a HAIR IN MY ESCABECHE slaw!!! I think they did this on purpose but I can't say for sure. SERVICE IS TERRIBLE and food is a decent.

Leah Z.

Yelp
Great pupusas, friendly service, hella vegetarian options! I had the zucchini and the loroco pupusas and both were great! All the sides were good as well. Glad to have this place in my neighborhood (:

Michael C.

Yelp
Been to this place a few times. When you get there the workers act like they don't see you especially if you're not Hispanic. On top of all that they take forever to make your food. I order a soup this one time and almost fell asleep waiting. Took them 45mins to get me my soup while all the other Latin people got their food before me and I got there first smh. I hate the women who works here smh.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
We just discovered this place with a friend and OMG soooooo good. It is definitely a place I would recommend.

Giggle B.

Yelp
i love there burritos and tacos there so good#nottospicy There service was amazing and incredible la jefa told me about her grandkids I love the ambiance it's so fetch

Kenneth G.

Yelp
Highly recommend the pupusas from here. All the drinks available are really good. Best pupusas in the Excelsior District.

Amelia C.

Yelp
Although the food quality is mediocre, I have to note that eating in the restaurant vs delivery yields better quality dishes. Nothing new for dining, right? However, both take out and eating in the restaurant are not recommended. The server we had both times was incredibly rude. The second occasion when we ordered take out, she told us to "wait" while we stood there for about 45 minutes with a smallish order while other patrons who arrived later were served before us. Not worth giving a 4th chance when there are tons of other options close by.

Gris F.

Yelp
The pupusas are one of the best out there. I have ordered multiple times and they are always so good. The cheese pupusas are a must to have- they are tasty and so full! If you are looking for yummy pupusas, I recommend this place!

Lisbeth M.

Yelp
Casi 40 min de espera solo para 2 atoles de elote que todavia estaban fríos cuando me los entrego ! Pésimo servicio !!!!!!!!

Isai M.

Yelp
Service was horrible. Do not order for delivery! They always mess up your order!! I ordered on Postmates for delivery and when my food arrived only half of it was in the bag so I drove 25+ minutes to the restaurant just for them to tell me that the driver took it?? Really? Horrible customer service. They refused to give me the rest of my order and said contact Postmates sorry, instead of having good customer service and apologizing and fixing the drivers mistake or restaurants mistake! And when I asked for someone in charged they refused and then I asked for a manager or anyone with power and they refused to answer and said "oh we don't have anyone at the moment" just horrible

Adam H.

Yelp
Terrible service don't come here they will let you sit there and wait I waited for 40 mins+ for an online order I placed 10 mins before getting there stay away. Waste of time. Anytime I asked what's going on I was told "one moment" terrible service.

Carlos V.

Yelp
They always get me the wrong pupusas I was trying to explain to the ladies that work there and they just give me bowling eyes and ignore me , not trying to resolve the problem , I know a good service I was a waiter for many years and I never give that kind of attitude to client , I always try to apologize and solve the problem and be professional. They lost a good customer for many many years , I was always spend more then $50 every time I order + tips ...

Vanessa O.

Yelp
Hole in the wall, legit pupusas, great for delivery. Hearty, freshly made pupusas with a good proportion of filling. Fave is the shrimp, zucchini, and cheese. I also get chicarron, zucchini, and cheese. (Zucchini keeps the pupusas moister so there're good for leftovers, too!) ~$4 each for my choices of fillings. They also come with a tomato-based dipping sauce, and vinegary cabbage salad. A single pupusa is enough to fill me up, and they're also approved by our 1-year-old, which is a win! I always order delivery, and each time they arrive piping hot.

Erin R.

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious pupusas made with TLC. The pupusas are a decent price for the size and quality.

Flavio C.

Yelp
This is so bad on Sunday. People try to come and have a nice meal but we have a bad experience. We arrive and the waiter was so rude and angry she was so disrespectful I couldn't order because her attitude.

Bella B.

Yelp
I really enjoyed coming here after so many years. It's still very consistent which for me being gone away from the city for so long, often becomes a shock as most places I've loved in the past are either no longer in business, changed ownership, or outright are a totally different restaurant. I decided to come here for lunch while running errands and it wasn't busy (a positive since they take on average 25min to prepare your food) and service was friendly as usual. I had the pupusas revueltas (pork, bean, cheese mixed) and got two of them. My fiancé got one to try (pork and cheese only) and a plate. I also got an order of platanos fritos con frijoles y crema (fried plantains with beans and cream). It was very tasty and while the plantains were a bit on the soft side for my liking, they were very good. I only had about 1/4 of the portion but my fiancé was fine with that lol. He got their traditional plate ($18) and it was massive. I don't think he planned on it being as big as it was lol. He ate about half and took the rest home. He also got a plantain soda which he loved (he served a mission in Jamaica and it brought back fond memories for him). Overall the food was really good. Price wise it wasn't cheap (about $50 with tip) so for lunch for two it was costly but it's because he literally ordered the most expensive dish on the menu lol. I think my pupusas were $3.50 each and I cannot remember the cost of the platanos fritos. It took a while to be served and atmosphere was very casual. I speak limited Spanish enough to order food and know what I'm being served but my fiancé doesn't and our ordering process was seamless and pleasant. Overall a very positive experience here. We will be back!

Shadowcloud 2.

Yelp
Good place to get some pretty good pupusas. I got the pupusas with loroco and cheese. Un bien lugar para comer pupusas. Yo me comí las pupusas de queso y loroco.

Isaac S.

Yelp
hair in food absolutely disgusting. the service js bad workers have bad attitude. the ambience is calm. don't recommend coming here unless u want hair in your food and want it all burnt.

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Food didn't agree with us. We ordered the bean with cheese pupusa and the chicarron. It was horribly salty and I found myself drinking a lot of water to wash down the taste of the bean pupusa. My mom and brother had the chicarron pupusa and they told me the meat was burnt. Yuk! We ordered the food using DoorDash, and the poor driver was waiting over 1 hour because the restaurant was disorganized. Sadly, I even called the restaurant after my placing my DoorDash order just to confirm. So how can you lose my order? We waited 1 hr & 40 minutes for food that was later thrown out because it pretty much disgusted us. Now, we are drinking down Pepto to soothe our nausea. Zero stars to this restaurant 5 stars for the door dash delivery guy for waiting patiently and giving me continual updates on status, I don't recommend this place.

Marvin M.

Yelp
Terrible service. 45 minutes for a couple of pupusas. Please don't come to this place...STAY AWAY

Elsa C.

Yelp
Stay away from this place!!!! Rude servers, the food takes forever and when you get it is under cooked. Never again

Monik T.

Yelp
Delicious papusas and papas! My friends liked the avocado papusa, but I prefer the pork bean and cheese.

Kim W.

Yelp
I am always greeted her with a buenas trades and a smile. I work in the area doing home health and limited on what I can eat in the area as I am gluten free (celiac disease) . I eat here probably every other week and always get the spinach pupusa and bean, jalapeño, or zucchini as my second one. They always make the fresh and plenty of fillings without being greasy! It is a perfect stop to do some work and have a quick fresh bite! Highly recommend.
