"Pupusería Metapán is where to go when your fridge is offensively empty and you’d rather square off with a coyote than go to the grocery store. The Excelsior spot does great Salvadoran staples in a lowkey space, including fragrant, golden-brown pupusas that ooze with cheese. But when you’re not in the mood for masa, the other dishes, like a steaming sopa de res with flavor-packed broth, are also worth your time. Open until 10:30pm daily, this place is also a great late (ish) night option on this stretch of Mission Street. photo credit: Melissa Zink Food Rundown photo credit: Melissa Zink Revuelta Crisp edges, gooey insides, and perfectly salty pork can be yours if you go with the revuelta. The generous bowl of accompanying curtido is zippy and acidic in all the right ways. photo credit: Melissa Zink Sopa De Res Loaded with the requisite garden’s worth of corn, cabbage, and carrots, this soup is a filling and comforting option—especially if it’s big-scarf weather out." - Julia Chen
