Best restaurants for Latin Food in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"This laid-back spot on Livernois has for years helped to introduce Detroiters unfamiliar with Salvadoran food to the beauty of the country’s ubiquitous pupusa. The thick, handmade griddled cornmeal or rice flour tortillas are filled with choice of cheese, beans, chicharrones, jalepeños, loroco or other ingredients and come with complementary curtido (a Salvadoran cabbage slaw) and a red tomato salsa. Order one (or three) for a meal by itself or as a side to go with one of Pupuseria Y Restaurante Salvadoreno’s hearty caldos." - Serena Maria Daniels

I’ve had arepas and tamales. before but these Salvadoran pupusas were truly something else! I started out with a delicious pork tamale that was so thick and filled with meat, unlike some skinny ones I had elsewhere that were falling apart. I ordered the three pupusas dinner and the value was amazing for just $12. I had the loroco and cheese, chicken squash and cheese, and shrimp and cheese pupusas. Each one was hot, hearty, and so flavorful. They bring you a bowl of curtido and two bottles of their own hot sauce which went amazing with the pupusas. I was completely stuffed after everything! The waiters are so friendly and I got to practice my Spanish with them. Although, for some reason, you have to ask for the menu with the prices on it.

My children and I absolutely love the Salvadoran Pupusería! It’s one of our favorite local gems for authentic, flavorful food. We usually order the chicken, beans, and cheese pupusas — they’re always fresh, cheesy, and full of flavor. We have occasionally found small pieces of bone in the chicken, but it hasn’t stopped us from coming back. While the service can be a bit slow at times, the food is well worth the wait. If you’re looking for a taste of real Salvadoran cuisine, this place is definitely worth trying!

It’s cozy, it’s authentic, and it’s exactly what I needed on cold winter day after a night out. Delicious comfort food to warm me from the inside, and very attentive service. They filled my coffee three times! ☕️ Nicely caffeinated, with a full happy belly, I was energized and ready for whatever the day was about to throw at me. Don’t sleep on Pupuseria y Restaurante Salvadoreno, go have yourself a real Salvadoran experience, okay?

Wanted to come here ever since I saw this restaurant on 'parts unknown' show. The food taste is just fine. The waitress were nice and the atmosphere was just okay. Not sure if I would recommend this place to anyone or come back again.

Google
We often ordered take out from this place at my job and then they closed for remodeling. They reopened recently and we went to see them in person. They did not disappoint. The carrot and cheese is a favorite, bit everything is good. Plantains, frijoles and the fried chicken looked amazing, everything was fresh and served hot. The wait is a little long but the service was excellent. Worth the drive!

Songs playing were a vibe. Loved the people, made us feel like we were family. Occasionally dancing. My kind of experience. 10/10 oh and the food is to die for. We'll be back asap

Google
I used to go here regularly and the food was always delicious. I have only been once since they reopened. They have taken the prices off the menu. I cannot have some crazy high surprise bill.

Google
So if you want a hole in the wall known only mostly to local Latinos, check this place out. Service was genuine, kind, and attentive. Food was (don't tell my abuela) better than my grandmothers! Pupusas were fire, pollo guisado on point, rice seasoned, horchata hit, pollo empanizado delicious! Don't miss out!

Yelp
Over a decade one of the most popular Sw Detroit eating spots. We been customers since opening, they closed over a year for Covid. Always a fabulous Authentic Salvadoran meal. Da Pupusas are the star on the menu, over a dozen different fillings. We had a great combo the winner for me Jalapeno n Cheese rules. Had a couple Salvadoran Tamal different than the Mexican style, a Perco be Pork and Pollo be Chicken both marvelous. Had a really unique Hen Soup be a pound plus Chicken Breast, Rice, Beans, Bread and quart of Mega Veggie Soup. A perfect dish for sharing so delicious . Shout Out to Gabby our superstar waitress, her uncle owns the place. New fancy construction out front a mega patio will be open this spring. #pupuseriayrestaurantesalvadoreno #pupusas #pupusaria #hensoup #salvadorianfood #tamal #eatswdetroit #salvador @gabygeeeeee

Yelp
Went here for pupusas at the suggestion of a friend. She spoke Spanish which was helpful- and also not necessary. It was good to have her there so that she could shoW me the way to eat the pupusas. It is unassuming and casual but clean. It's in a building that might have been something else in another life. They have pupusas of all types. Different combinations of meat, cheese, beans, and even some veggie ones. I opted for one that had squash in it (and chicken and cheese). I also had one with pork. The slaw and salsa on top of them really add to the flavor! I saw what looked like a delicious soup being delivered so may try that when I go back! The lot is largely unpaved. Be carefull how you park.

Yelp
Always support small businesses. This is a small business that deserves your support. It has been great to see their little spot expand over the years. However, the food quality has always been consistent and homemade. Try this if you are tired of fast food and food in general food that is played out. This is a mom and pop shop for real.

Yelp
Love this place. Everything is made to order so it takes awhile but worth it. The parking lot is recently renovated so sometimes it may look like the restaurant is closed. One star off because they also redid the menu and now there is no pricing. We got charged incorrectly for our order and would not have noticed if we did not ask for an itemized receipt.

Yelp
Traditional meals typical of Central American cuisine. It's like going to visit family for a home cooked meal. Everything was authentically tasty. Food is filling with no thrills. If you're a foodie, this is not for you. If you're looking to experience authentic meals from native lands, this is a must try. All items are reasonably priced. Friendly staff and clean surroundings. On a side note, I can see much potential for this place in the future.

Yelp

Yelp
I got a bean and cheese pupusa and 2 chicken empanadas. Everything was amazing! Best pupusa AND empanadas I've had in Colorado. It was $13 for 2 chicken empanadas & the pupsa, which came with salsa and a cabbage mixture. It was the perfect sized lunch and really fantastic flavors.

Yelp
Yummy and tasty! Yes this place is off the beaten road and you would just pass this place and not think twice about it. But man do their papusa make you come back for more. My husband and I came here after having papusa in california and wanted to try this place. We were alittle confused about how to order but it is like any other place. If you want take out, you order at the register and if you want to dine in you sit at a table and someone will be with you. They have many things on the menu and everything looked good but we did the 2 papusa with a drink and rice and beans. You get to pick the papusa you want. I enjoyed it and would definitely go back for more. Did I just want to keep this place to myself and not share, of course! But I am too nice and think that good food should be shared! Enjoy!

Yelp
I really wanted to love this restaurant. I have been intrigued by pupusas, ever since seeing them on the Food Network. So when a friend suggested a pupuseria for lunch, we jumped at the chance, piled into his car and off we went. The mom-and-pop restaurant is in an industrial part of Detroit. The parking lot was half-filled with cars when we arrived, expected given that it was a bit later in the afternoon. Inside the main dining room, the remnants of the lunch rush remained. Empty glasses, dirty dishes, stray crumbs still sat at unoccupied tables so we ended up on one end of the long table in the center of the room. We ordered quickly: pupusas for all, along with tamales and plantains. I had the chicharron y queso pupusa, pork and cheese filled corncakes. The soft corncakes were nicely crispy; I enjoyed the melted cheese and savory pork mixture. While tomato sauce and a vinegary cabbage slaw, curtido, were available to season the dish, I thought it was delicious without any additional ornamentation. The fried plantains were also incredible, soft, with a lovely smoky flavor. The side was larger than either of the other items ordered, definitely large enough to share. I ordered a tamale, as well, to get a taste of everything. Shredded chicken breasts were in a corn dough, steamed until cooked. Unfortunately, compared with the pupusas and plantains, it was rather bland and uninteresting. It is a good thing that the pupusa and plantains were plentiful enough that I did not miss the tamale. Service was okay. While there was some confusion regarding who ordered what (food was mistakenly delivered to our table), the server was quick to take our order and provide us with our beverages.

Yelp
First time trying salvadorian food. This location was In a odd spot off the highway and kind of hard to get into. Coming in it looks bigger than it does outside. I had high expectations coming into this place because my freinds said it was really good. The ambiance is very traditional with local music, decorations on the wall and the waitstaff and menu being in Spanish, all the good elements of a fantastic hole in the wall. The menu options are showcasing pupusas which are bread, cheese and either beans or peppers or many combinations of meats, cheeses and whatever else you can think. I ordered the squash and chicken, the jallapeno, the tamale and a passionfruit drink. It was as expected, very heavy and cheesy. Two would of been enough I ordered three with plantians. Plantains were well done with beans and sour creme. Tamale was cooked nicely with shredded chicken inside. As far as the pupusas they were as expected, heavy with cheese and meat on a plate stacked like pancakes exept the salvadorian. As far as authenticity goes this place would be my best guess to what it would be like to get out in el Salvador. Learn some Spanish. Food could be better in presentation but honestly it's well regarded because thats what your going for. 71/100 @mazadarrecipes

Yelp
The food is always 100, very delicious and well prepared!! The only bad thing is that when you want to put order to go, it is VERY difficult for them to answer the phone. Maybe due to lack of help but their hours say one thing and they don't respond until hours later.

Yelp
I love this place! great food The one grip is they lack a good phone system and technology. I can get over this because the price is right!

Yelp
This place is delicious. Best Pupusas ever! comparing to El Guanaco, where I go quite often due to location (much closer to my house), these are much bigger and you barely can eat two of them. They bring you to share a bowl of salad and a bottle of salsa. Both were very good, although I like salsa to be more chunky. I tried also the regular steamed corn tamale that comes with crema, and it was very good too. We left so full, and even took some back home for next day. These babies are very feeling. I wish they were closer to my area, soooo gooooood.

Yelp
Excellently authentic! You are transported to a small family restaurant in El Salvador, family run, mom is literally the cook in the kitchen. They were hit by Covid shut down and almost closed for good, Gabby (daughter) was our server and told us the whole story which made it all even a better experience. They had a lot of challenges, someone made a false website and was taking orders and money. Scammers eating their meal then don't want to pay, people that act like a holes about liquor drinks, on and on, yet they persevered and I am glad they did. I want to prepare you for a few things: 1. No alcohol because of a some instances of rude people who can't handle their liquor that ruined it for the rest of us. 2. This is NOT Mexican food, so don't expect chips and salsa when you sit down. This is Salvadorian food; papusas, plantains, fried jicama, etc. I mean the tamales are wrapped in plantain leaves flown in from El Salvador, that's the real deal! 3. They cook to order, everything is made from scratch, everyday, 6 days a week (closed Mondays). 4. They are short staffed and having a hard time finding good help, so be patient! 5. Try not to go on Sundays, they are slammed and do their best to service you and set expectations. If they tell you to call back in an hour, that's because they care about your order and your time. They are proud of the food and want you to be happy.

Yelp
I now frequent this Pupusaeria wonderland with their delicious Pupusas (Gluten-free, corn based, stuffed pancake-style sandwiches) and their absolutely incredible fried plantains (try them with beans and sour cream!), there simply isn't anything on their menu that isn't great. And their prices are pretty south of fair market value. This is my favorite spot in Southwest Detroit! It is quick, low cost, and fantastic Gluten-free food. And the servers are very friendly even though some of them don't speak perfect English; that actually makes it all that much more authentic and I get to brush up on mi Espanol when there For those who don't know what gluten is, no worries, you are probably lucky. But if you're allergic to gluten and/or wheat/BarleyRye, then this place is an escape from all of those allergy concerns and headaches! I often stop by there just to grab two dinners to go, one to eat and the other for 2nd helpings the next day! I have tried nearly everything on their menu, but clearly the star of the show are the authentic Pupusas and Plantains from their recipes handed down in El Salvador! Great big shout out to the fine folks who operate this little wonderland; I believe that they are family run and they certainly work hard and fully deserve all 5 stars!

Yelp
Came here for the Beans and Loroco and the Beans and Chicken pupusas. The pupusas have excellent corn flour. The breading is soft and lightly flavor with a smooth approach on the palate. The pupusas are just seared enough to leave a light crisp in the center of the exterior without overcooking the flour. Both pupusas we're very similar. The loroco flower is similar to overcooked green peppers. The flavors were tasty and savoury but not interesting or complex. The chicken was executed well, albeit slightly overcooked. The cheese portion inside was generous and nice and salty. Because I can't eat spicy food, I was unable to eat the cabbage, though the small portion I tried was a bit crisp and bland for my liking.

Yelp
A diamond in the (very) rough of Southewest Detroit. Very easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but I recommend finding it. The pupusas are the star of the menu here, and they're fantastic. The plantains with Salvadorian sour cream are great. The tamales are all really tasty, as well. These are Salvadorian style wrapped in banana leaves. Nice and moist. I think my favorite is the sweet corn with sour cream. A fantastic combination. Also, the chicharrones are on point. Really good authentic Salvadorian food. Parking sucks and the ambiance is interesting, but worth a trip to the hood. Definitely recommended. Pupusas are a must try, and don't sleep on the chicharrones.

Yelp
This was the first place I was ever introduced to pupusas and it was such a memorable experience. It's an odd location and the driveway was rough coming in and it's in the middle of a residential area. I had 2 pupusas a la carte. One as a solo de queso (cheese only) and the other as frijol y queso (beans and cheese). They were both yummy but what made it better was the spicy slaw with jalapeño and the tomato salsa, which was on the runny side and was bland on its own. I could have easily eaten a trough of the spicy slaw salad. I have had pupusas elsewhere but my favorite version and the best slaw with it is here.

Yelp
I liked this place! It's off of Livernois not on Livernois so it took a while to figure out where it was. But when we got the the parking lot was full so i knew it was gonna be a win. First off, they're salsa is bomb. Definitely need some spice but it had good flavor. I had pupusas with laroco, bean and cheese, shrimp and also a pork tamale. The pupusas were good except for the laroco, wasn't my thing. But the tamale oh my god, the best tamale ive had in a long time. So frickin good. Moist, flavorful, huge. Prices are super cheap. We ordered platanos con crema, 5 pupusas, drinks, and the tamale, and the whole thing was only 22 bucks. Staff was attentive and fast, helpful. Decor was homey, hole in the wall-ish, but food was good and prices were cheap so who cares. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
One of the few places in Michigan to have a truly authentic Savadorian meal. Get your tacos and burritos somewhere else! If you've never had a papusa or even heard of a papusa you need to try one. In El Salvador you can buy one about every 10 feet. I always sit down thinking I need to take a picture before I dive in but I I'm always too excited. I beautifully hand crafted stuffed super thick corn tortilla awaits!
google avatar

Lou T.

Yelp
Oh most definitely you have to try this place if you haven't had the pupusas you have to give them a try they are so delicious no matter which one you won't be disappointed
google avatar

Yelp
Restaurant needs to update opening times. We arrived at 6pm on a Saturday and the staff told us rhe restaurant was closed.

Yelp
My friend showed me this place. I never heard of a pupusa before and he described it as a taco meets a pancake. After he said that and I saw pictures, I had to go! It really is as good as it looks and sounds! And as a huge plus, it's very cheap too! It was $2.50 for one pupusa. They have great options for vegetarians as well. I got the carrot and cheese pupusa. The only complaint is that my boyfriend and I thought that it was missing something like garlic or onion. I also tried the corn tamale with sweet creama and it was great! It tasted a little like a sweet corn bread. I also tried the horchata and there was a strong toasted rice flavor that I liked and haven't tasted before in other horchatas. I've tried 3 other horchatas at Mexican markets and restaurants and this horchata was my favorite. However, I still found it on the sweeter side. Our waitress didn't speak any English, but you can just point to the item on the menu and it works fine. Finally, yes the location is in a rougher neighborhood, but I felt safe being there and they do have a security camera in the dining area to watch you car if you want.

Yelp
A co-worker of mine recommended this place for a team lunch. It was really good. I didn't expected great food from that small place. My never had Salvadoran food earlier. No idea how it will be. But as we already had a visitor who recommended papusas most of went with that. No one is disappointed. I ordered three papusas and fried plantains. I can see some similarilities with papusas and indian stuffed Paratha. Papusas are made with corn flour and stuffed with cheese and the option we like such as carrot, squash etc. Stuffed Paratha are made with wheat flour and stuffed with paneer (indian cottage cheese), potato etc. Really most of my teammates were not able to finish three papusas. I hardly managed to finish. I liked fried plantains but can't eat more due to the sweetness. As the person taking order is not fluent in English and I don't know how to exactly pronounce the name in the menu, I have to repeat the things and point in menu. One thing I didnt like in the menu is numbers are repeated in all the sections. Usually menus will have unique numbers for items and it will be easy for ordering which is missing here. Great food, great service and love to go back.

Yelp
After eating here I texted my girlfriend (no joke) "girrrlllllll I just had the best meal of my life". I don't know if it is an exaggeration, but it was so good. In addition to my text, I called 2 people. It is ON Livernois. GPS will have you driving around and around the block looking for Clayton. Not sure if Clayton exists, I never found it. And the sign on Livernois is a little scary. I took a photo...The neighborhood seemed fine - not sure what others are talking about. It is Southwest Detroit, not Birmingham. Just park and settle down, it'll be fine. So the food. Oh, friends. The. Food. I read some reviews and had a pupusa ($2.30 with salad) and plantains ($5.95, for like 15 pieces), and a coke ($1.30). My order was basically 2 meals, but I ordered just plantains and she said, "uh, no pupusa?". So I added on, SO glad I did. The plantains were very good - fried to perfection. The pupusa was out of this world. The salad with jalapenos and the homemade red spicy sauce in a jug? OHHHH! I mean, just go. It is so amazing.
google avatar

Pixie B.

Yelp
This place is so authentic and amazing, you can't beat it!!!! One of my favorite spots in all of the country honestly! We go here every time we visit Detroit. It's not fancy looking on the outside but on the inside you get some of the best fresh and most authentic Salvadoran food you will find anywhere and the staff is always friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
The food is as good as it gets for what you're paying. The pupusas are the best I have ever had. Steaming hot, crispy and brown on the outside, savory and cheesy on the inside. I would recommend the chicken, squash and cheese pupusa. The chicken tamale is also very savory and delicious. But the pupusas are where it's at. The spicy cabbage slaw is has a wonder balance of salty, vinegary and spicy. It's the perfect crunchy acidic hit when paired with the pupusa. The food is extremely affordable. $2.25 for a pupusa and $2 for a chicken tamale. They are very filling as well. The staff is quick and friendly. My ONLY gripe is the location of this place. It's not a safe area. It is located in neighborhood with tons of rundown, vacant buildings. They even have a TV in the restaurant where you can watch video surveillance of the parking lot outside so you can see if anyone is trying to break into your car. Although that is thoughtful, it gives you an idea of how dangerous the area is. Oh, also my bean, cheese and loroco flower pupusa didn't have any loroco flowers in it. However, I didn't say anything to the staff because I already ate most of it before I noticed (I've never had loroco flower so I didn't know what to look for, but there definitely wasn't anything else in it other than beans and cheese). I wasn't able to completely relax and enjoy my meal (even though it was really good) because of the environment. Because of that, it gets 4 stars instead of 5. BUT if you don't care about that/are getting take-out, then by all means stop by for some wonderful Salvadoran food.

Alejandro G.

Yelp
Do not come here if expecting good service. Service is extremely slow. Expect to wait an hour for your food.
google avatar

Gerrit K.

Yelp
Delicious pupusas for only $2.50ea! Great milkshakes and aquas frescas as well. Even decadent sweet plantains! We especially enjoyed the pupusa de calabacita and the pupusa de carne molida. Not the best pupusas ever, but definitely the best I've been able to get in New Mexico so far. Worth making your way down to the area to enjoy them. Very polite Spanish speaking staff that doesn't speak English well, but is happy to serve you and make sure you get what you are looking for.

Yelp
I arrived and started to walk in to order myself and my family some pupusas. There was a guy bringing out an order to another customer and he tells me that I have to call in the order. I go back to my car and call the place and it goes to a voicemail. I wait a few minutes... and call again. This time they answer and the guy proceeds to tell me that they are now closed... they have there hours posted on the door. I believe it said they close at 6. However this occurred at about 3pm...

Yelp
I had my first pupusa (Salvadoran corn meal cake) not that long ago and I just fell in LOVE with them! When I saw this place, I just had to try it! Not knowing what the traditional size of one was, (the only time I had them they were silver dollar pancake sized) we definitely ordered way too many. They were huge!! The price had me fooled. Coming in at $2.25-$2.80 a piece, I had no idea I would be receiving such a large portion of food with a side of some crunchy, fresh spiced cabbage too! They were insanely good!! We ordered beans with cheese, cheese, carrot and since there are made fresh I was able to eliminate cheese and just do a beans and jalapeño which was my favorite, but definitely had a kick! So, so, so good! The place looked as though many big family dinners are held here in the one dining room which held a larger dining table. Despite it being a more casual, grab and go spot, it had a comforting feel to it. You can tell this was authentic. Our server was sweet although she didn't fully understand English, we were able to convey what we had wanted.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
I've been here a few times per a recommendation of a friend. The pupusas are awesome! Everything is always fresh, and the yucca fries are delicious! I've tried most varieties of the pupusas that they have, and haven't been disappointed yet. I also tried the elote tamales, which are one of the best things to ever have! I don't know how I've never had them before! This place is definitely a hidden gem. I probably wouldn't even have noticed it if I hadn't known about it.

Shannon P.

Yelp
It is hard to see this as they have a large gate now. It is open and the food was amazing. This is the kind of thing you get a craving for. So delicious.
google avatar

Audrey S.

Yelp
So delicious! I will definitely be back on my next road trip to Detroit. I got the fried plantains and two pupusas, one chicken with squash and cheese and one with just cheese. Both were equally tasty! The pupusas come with a side of pickled cabbage and jalapeños served with a slightly spicy salsa that brings it all together. Loved this place!
google avatar

Isabel A.

Yelp
Delicious pupusas! My mother in law makes them so we know what an authentic pupusas should taste like and I had never had pupusas at a restaurant this good. Not greasy like in most restaurants I've tried them. Will definitely come back and recommend for pupusa lovers to come and enjoy them.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
I'm a pupusa newbie, and I ordered the combination plate with the choice of any two. Big mistake! One would have been more than enough. These plush little pockets of goodness are extremely filling. I tried a cheese, and a pork pupusa. First the cheese - I couldn't place what kind of cheese it was, but it had enough flavor to carry its own. Its taste was reminiscent of the cheese used in Greek Saganaki. The pork was moist and flavorful, though not overly spicy. The meat had smoky undertones, like it had been cooked over an open fire. It was hard to decide which pupusa I liked better. The combination plate came with beans and rice. I don't think I would order them again. They weren't bad, but the pupusas were more than enough.

Yelp
This place is so good!! Their pupusas are delicious! I haven't tasted one that I don't like. They don't seem to care if they get your order right... good thing all their pupusas are good. You can get passed on the rude service, it's worth the food. This is why I still gave it 5 stars, the food!! Favs: pupusas revueltas, platano (plantains), tamal (corn tamal). Keep in mind their agua de horchata is not Mexican style... I didn't care for it.

Yelp
Fiance' and I stopped into Pupuseria y Restaurante Salvadoreno for lunch on Saturday, and it was just as awesome as Yelp's been saying it is. We needed a low maintenance place for lunch before seeing a movie at the Redford. Pupuseria is not (at all) in the same area as the Redford, but when Fiance' left the restaurant choice up to me, I jumped on it. I've been hearing about this place for years, and have always wanted to try it. Like the pictures show, it's a tiny, tiny little building set off the road. The parking-lot is mainly dirt. We had no idea what to expect walking in. The restaurant is a little place with two separate rooms. Food menus cover the walls, Latin music plays over the speakers. We sat ourselves and were greeted by a friendly (though apologetically non-English speaking) waitress. We each ordered two pupusa (chicken and cheese and chicken squash for me, chicken and cheese and calamari for Fiance') and some plantains, beans, and rice to split. Based on the extremely reasonable prices, we figured that would be enough food. That was PLENTY of food. I've only had pupusas one other time, admittedly, but these were huge and full of gooey, delicious cheese. They were served with some slaw and a spicy, chili sauce-like salsa. Really great. And, you guys, the plantains. I mean the whole plate, but oh my God the plantains. My mouth is watering as I type this. Sweet, warm, delicious. Smothered in the beans and cheese sauce on the side. Fiance' said they were the best he's had. After all that, the bill was something insane like $16. We're certainly going back. Delicious, delicious food. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I loved the pupusas. BUT THE SERVICE could be way better. I was left waiting on the waitress for a long while . The service is usually good but the last time I didn't appreciate the long wait even when she seen me waiving at her

Yelp
I love this place. Great food at a great value. Besides the food being good the staff is really pleasant as is the service. You have to try the fried plantain with cream and refried beans its a hit every time! Any of the pupusas are going to be good. My friends and I always order a variety. We can't wait until our next visit to try some different things on the menu. Parking is off street and you can even see the parking lot on monitor in the dining room. Right now there's some construction going on, but don't let that stop you. I wish we had more restaurants like this around!

Yelp
We tried a good selection of pupusas. Oh man, are they delicious! Made to order, so they come out super hot and fresh. They pile it in a plate, so it's kind of a bummer you know know which pupusa is which, but hey, it's a good thing if you like surprises! We tried all the meat filled ones, as well as the fish and shrimp, and beans. I'd order all of it again quite honestly. If you're down to eat like that then, bring your eating buddies! Don't waste time on the other stuff like the yucca and the plantains, which were underwhelming and not cooked thoroughly. They have booths in there and a long communal style table. They speak Spanish in there so be polite and dig deep down inside and try to remember the Spanish you learned in high school, lol. If you're struggling enough, the waitress will speak to you in English. Thank goodness i just got back from a trip to Spain to my Spanish was still fresh in my mind! Lol. In any case, you'll survive and have a happy stomach, that's for sure. Happy Eating and cheers! PS-no worries, they have cameras in the parking lot so you can watch your car if you want to :P

Yelp
The horchata is so tasty: not overly sweet, real cinnamon, and a hint of toasted rice. Be aware that the pupasas are very filling. The plantains (sweet & deep fried) are perfectly balanced dipped in the crema & beans. Be prepared for post-pupusa carb coma.

Yelp
If I wanted to create a list of places I would consider good, cheap eats there's no doubt that Pupusería would be on it. I've never had a pupusa before I came here. I dropped by with a bunch of colleagues for lunch, the place is small and unless you're looking for it you probably wouldn't stumble across it. A pupusa is a stuffed corn tortilla. A delicious stuffed corn tortilla. The waitresses generally don't speak English but they are wonderful about getting your order. My favorite is the shrimp pupusa (I'm also pescatarian, so my choices are limited) but other people have also said the shrimp is the best. I've had the fried plantains and those are delicious. I've heard the soup is amazing too but I always want pupusas when I come. The only let down were the corn tamales. They were good but I probably couldn't eat more than one, and they really taste like corn bread. If you've never had Salvadoran food, put this on your radar. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This is a must try in Detroit! There's a large selection of pupusas and are made to order! This was my first time trying El Savadorean food and I am impressed! The staff don't speak much English so ordering may need to be a combination of gestures and photo pointing, but that doesn't stop me from eating good food. I ordered the Dos Pupusas Dinner Con Arroz Y Frijoles, which is the two pupuas dinner with rice, beans and a soft drink. I asked for agua de coco, and the waitress thought I wasn't sure what it was so she even went to the fridge and showed me the drink to make sure that's what I wanted! However, I opted for pineapple juice instead. It's really tasty and fresh. There are even little brown bits on the pineapple inside the cup. I ordered the Chicken Squash with Cheese and the Squid with Cheese. The squash is actually zucchini, which I enjoyed. The squid with cheese tasted like fish and was on the saltier side, so I don't think I'll be getting that again. The pupusas come with picked cabbage and some salsa? They taste amazing when eaten with the pupusas. Side note: there are also cameras inside the restaurant so you can watch your car in the parking lot!!

Yelp
I finally got over here! Thank goodness because it is amazingly good. Get off your suburban asses and make the trek! I immediately regretted not bringing James as he would have adored the food and he would have done better than we did at communicating. We managed and the food was just stellar, definitely worth the drive. I love the pupusas with their thick corn deliciousness, all crispy on the outside. The chicken and cheese, bean and cheese and the pork are very nice options but the filling is not really the star of the show to be honest. The curtido with its zip and spicy kick here is utter happiness. The pasteles were also extremely flavorful, loved the potato/chicken filling. They are little crunchy pockets of heaven. The piece de resistence here is the fried plaintains with beans and salty crema. Sinful and decadent. not for the health fanatics but man are they missing out. I could eat these all day. Creamy but you are getting the tastebuds firing with the flavors.

Yelp
Thanks to all my Yelpers for helping me find this El Salvadoran restaurant! : ) Pupusa with loroco flower was delicious! Pasteles di pollo were buenisimo! Loved the slight heat of the curtido (a cabbage salad)! Skip the horchata! To get the full effect of Pupusería y Restaurante Salvadoreño you've gots to dine in: get a table, order your food, watch a snippet of the telenovela, and enjoy the freshly made meal! =)

Yelp
Found only because of Yelp reviews. Cash only, don't bother to bring credit cards. If you speak Spanish, they do too! Great food. Great prices. Fresh made - you can hear the pat-pat-pat in the kitchen as they hand-make the pupusas. Hey, I'm a gringo with an appetite. I'll be back to try out some of the items suggested by Yelpers.

Yelp
I take my Salvi food very seriously. This place kills it. Food is delicious and so so well priced. Tastes just like my grandma's cooking and the environment is just sooo Salvadoran I love it. The pupusas are thick, wide and definitely worth their American price. I've been there a million times and the food is always solid, regardless of what I'm ordering. They've even got some latin music and horchata for sale which further shows how legit they are about el ambiente. Feels like a little piece of home away from the motherland

Yelp
First time having El Salvadorian food and it was a neat experience. Went with a friend and sampled 6 different pupusas. Highly recommend the fish pupusas and the bean ones as well. It was also super authentic-- everyone in there appeared Hispanic/Latino. Overall, it was extremely affordable and definitely one of Detroit's more hidden gems! One thing to note is that the waitress speaks very little English. I had to pull out my high school Spanish to communicate with her. Although I had fun, those who are not familiar with Spanish may have some trouble overcoming the language barrier.
