The Best Restaurants and Bars in Temescal | Eater SF

"Serving Korean comfort food and seasonally changing banchan since 1999, Pyeong Chang Tofu House is a great family-run restaurant on Telegraph Avenue. tofu soup, seafood pancakes, and bibimbap are all popular orders here, though there’s also Korean barbecue, cold noodles, and ginseng stuffed whole chicken soup to be had on the extensive menu." - Eater Staff

Pyeong Chang Tofu Review - Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Pyeong Chang Tofu House is a popular Korean spot in Temescal (there’s a second location in Berkeley on University Ave). While there are 100 different reasons we’d recommend you try this place if you haven’t, their soondubu is the main one. The fiery pork and tofu stew is the perfect thing to keep you warm during the colder months, but we’re also very pro coming here in the summer and sweating just a little bit more than usual." - Noah Cho

The Best Korean Restaurants in the East Bay | Eater SF

"You may have heard East Bay resident Samin Nosrat rave about Pyeong Chang’s kimchijeon in the New York Times Magazine — and those savory pancakes are indeed one of the best versions of the dish in the Bay Area. Pyeong Chang, though, also has some of the most satisfyingly rich soondubu in the area, and their daily rotation of house-made banchan always delights. The soondubu holds up well to takeout, but I’d pop the lid open on the pajeon if you pick it up so it retains its crispness. Both the Oakland and Berkeley locations are open for takeout, with both online ordering and app-based delivery available." - Noah Cho

The Best East Bay Restaurants That Are Open for Takeout and Delivery | Eater SF

"Among the long stretch of Korean restaurants that line Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, Pyeong Chang is one of the most consistently satisfying, with its small but reliably excellent banchan selection and its namesake tofu stews — bubbling little cauldrons that pack a ton of flavor and chile heat. The restaurant (and its sister location in Berkeley) is open for takeout and offering a number of special deals for the duration of the shelter in place: 20 percent discount on all tofu stew orders, half off on bottles of soju, and an all-day $12 dosirak lunchbox special. Call in to order." - Luke Tsai

Google
Good Korean food. One of the few places I've been to that serves kong guk su, so that was a welcome surprise for a sunny day. Fairly quick service. Does suffer a bit from the bay area price inflation though, so wasn't the cheapest meal. Overall, not bad for the occasional large group lunch.

Excellent service! We tried the Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap and original fried chicken. Both dishes had great flavor.

We ordered tofu soup and seafood pancake. The restaurant serves free small cold appetizers that are commonly served in Korean restaurants. These appetizers are good. I wish they have fish cakes hahaha. The pancake is the best I ever had. It’s so crispy.

WOW! Took me right back to my days in Seoul, eating a steamy, spicy bowl of 김치찌개 while it rained outside. The vibe of this restaurant is classic Korean style — K-pop on the TV, water in the plastic jug with the soju ads, and wide tables with plenty of space for the rotating selection of banchan (don’t worry though, they always include kimchi). If you were to ask me to take you to the most authentic feeling Korean joint, this would be #1 on the list. Okay, now the food — ho. ly. smokes! Everything was delicious and extremely high quality. The sizzling dolsat bibimbop and bulgogi were highlights, though the kimchi pancake was amazing as well (and not too spicy whatsoever!). We were pleasantly surprised to have a complimentary bowl of tofu soup included in the meal, and were so glad we didn’t miss out on it — there’s a reason they’re called the tofu house. The kimchi tofu soup was INCREDIBLE! We could choose our spice level (I went for medium) and it made for seriously the most unforgettable meal. I savored every bite! We didn’t realize that the meals came with a side of rice in a big stone pot, so in hindsight we felt like we could’ve skipped the bibimbap and still had a very filling meal. It ended up being fine though, as it just meant I had more leftovers to take home for lunch the next day! :) One thing to keep in mind is that because the food is really high quality, the price tag is a bit steeper than other Korean restaurants are in Temescal. However, between the quality and quantity of the food we really felt like we were the ones getting the better end of the bargain. I do think that the larger the group, the easier you might be able to bear the cost and try all of the incredible dishes. I’m not too proud to say that I enjoyed the meal so much that I went back a week later and ordered takeout! This place lives up to the hype and is somewhere I’d highly recommend for anyone in the mood for real, hearty, authentic 한국음식.

I came here on July 23rd 2025 around 11:30am to get the soft tofu with my wife. We had few questions but the server was very rude and mad. We ordered spam cheese soft tofu and original lunch soft tofu the food came out faster than side dish. I asked him for the side dish and he brought them out. BUT, when he was bringing the side dish, he brought the heavy crispy rice pot with it and threw it on the table and it had really loud noise, we were very scared by that and he didn’t even apologize about his move. The food is good but if I see the same server in the restaurant again, then I would go to different place right away.

Google
Food is bad. Fish cake side dish was too sweet, tofu soup was salty. The tofu soup was also priced at $20.99. I do not recommend a mid tofu soup at that price range. I go to MBR nearby instead.

Yelp
Oh how I've missed you Pyeong Chang Tofu House! I'm so happy I went last night. I can't believe I let so much time pass since my last visit! It was pretty packed on a Saturday night but we didn't have to wait too long; about 10-15 minutes. I brought my friend (her first time) and we were eagerly awaiting to eat the mung bean pancakes, vegetarian soft tofu soup and tofu dol sot bibimbap. I was so hungry when they brought the banchan side dishes that I only took photos of that and the mung bean pancakes. My mind was set on eating the mains dishes that I forgot to take photos of them. Delicious, comforting, soft tofu soup served with a side of crunchy rice. Along with a stone bowl of tofu bibimbap where we can eat all the crunchy rice and veggies our heart desires. The only negative last night was having the table right next to the waiting area so groups of people are literally standing by your table waiting. But I was just happy to be seated eating delicious, comforting food so the pros outweighed the con. Grateful Pyeong Chang is vegan friendly. This is by far my favorite Korean restaurant!

Yelp
I am ashamed to say that for a very long time I did not see why someone would buy tofu soup at a restaurant until I came here with friends and was shown the light! Tofu soup is AMAZING!!!! Since then I have come here a number of times with friends from 4 - 9 people and they always have seating despite being on the smaller end inside. We usually order ordered: Kimchi pancake - very delicious and they have it but up into about 8 pieces Mung bean pancake - my favorite and cut up into 4 pieces Chicken wings: regular and soy garlic - very very delicious but pricey Soju cocktail - very good and not too sweet Tofu Soup - any option will hit the spot, very delicious BUT for what it is it is pricey Pro tip: it's way better in the clay pot when you dine in. The service was great and attentive. They made sure our waters were filled and that we had everything we needed.

Yelp
What happened to this place? I'm Korean and have been coming here for years -- long before I moved to New York seven years ago. Every time I visited Oakland, this was my go-to spot. It used to be a gem, a place I even preferred over BCD Tofu House in LA and NYC. But something has seriously changed. On my recent visit, it was clear the food is no longer being made by someone who understands Korean cuisine. The banchan, especially the kimchi, tasted completely off -- bland, unbalanced, and just wrong. The tofu soup and biji jjigae were watery, flavorless, and missing the soul that defines good Korean comfort food. Even the rice -- the rice! -- was undercooked and clumpy. That's basic, and they couldn't even get that right. It honestly broke my heart. This place went from being a comforting reminder of home to something I couldn't even finish. I don't know if the ownership changed or if they just stopped caring, but either way, I won't be returning. What a shame.

Yelp
This is my go-to comfort food spot. With a wide variety of traditional Korean dishes, you can't go wrong with getting the classic tofu soup - make sure to always get an egg with it. In addition to the soup, the seafood pancake is fantastic. With a sweet and savory dipping sauce, it's filled with umami to pair with the freshly fried pancake. Add in the crispy Korean fried chicken, and you've got yourself all the highlights. If you're looking to add a drink or two, recommend giving the makgeolli a try - a traditional Korean rice wine, it's like a slightly sweet alcoholic milk that's smooth to the taste. With great service, a variety of side dishes, and a homey environment, there's not a lot that's missing. Just know there could be a wait time in the evenings given the prime location. That being said, it's definitely worth the wait - make sure to go on an empty stomach cause you'll be eating EVERYTHING.

Yelp
One of my friends really loves this tofu soup spot (and it was close to the ice cream place that my other friend really likes) so our group of five swung by on Saturday afternoon a little after 1pm (managed to find street parking nearby). There were only a few occupied tables when we arrived, so we were seated immediately. It was perfect soup weather, so after looking over their menu, I decided to get their seafood tofu soup with a mild spice level. I noticed a sign with an article mentioning their kimchi pancake, and other reviews also mentioned it, so a friend and I also decided to split one. We didn't have to wait too long for the food to come out, and I liked that everything came out at the same time! As someone with a low tolerance for spice, the mild was personally perfect for me (any spicier and I wouldn't have enjoyed it). I wouldn't say it's the best one I've had, but my craving for tofu soup was satisfied (my friend really liked their mushroom tofu soup so maybe I'll get that next time). The kimchi pancake was definitely an excellent decision -- it was hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with bits of kimchi in the middle. I will be thinking about this kimchi pancake for a long time haha I enjoyed it quite a bit. Note that service fee/gratuity was automatically applied for us since we were a party of five. I don't live in the area, so I don't see myself coming back often, but if you're nearby, I would highly recommend the kimchi pancake!!

Yelp
As a Korean, I've had many soondubus/soft tofu soups in and outside of CA. I was really hoping to like this place given the 4+ star rating and 1K+ reviews. I ordered the kimchi tofu soup and it tasted fine but nothing special that justified the price and was left still hungry at the end of the meal! I was honestly shocked at how ridiculously small the portion was for charging $20+!! Insane! Not exaggerating, it basically came in the size of what they typically serve gyeran-jjim/steamed egg which isn't right at all!! Speaking of eggs, they even charged extra for that too! I also wasn't a fan of the large cuts of onion. The banchan/side dishes were sub par. The service was like any other Korean restaurant. Overall, it was very disappointing and will not be going back. It's a shame that there's no BCD in NorCal :(

Yelp
A must visit! Some of the BEST Korean fried chicken I've had. The chicken was soo crispy and light while the chicken was perfectly juicy. While the fried chicken (the original) was the fan favorite was the star of the dish the ginseng chicken soup was also a favorite. The soup comes with a whole chicken stuffed with sticky rice, jujubes, and chestnuts. The soup is thick with collagen and packed with flavor. You can even dip the chicken meat into salt and pepper if you want that added flavor. Our group saw the kimchi pancake award sign and knew we wanted to order. And just as described the kimchi pancake didn't disappoint, it was crispy not too oily. The pancake came out piping hot and retains its crispy texture for quite some time, the light batter didn't feel too heavy and gloopy. Made for a crisp bright bite! Our group had a memorable dinner and will definitely be back for more fried chicken! The service was helpful and we got to dine in the back room lending to a more private experience.

Yelp
Visited on a Thursday night around 6:45pm with a friend, restaurant had several other guest but several open tables so we're seated right when we arrived. Food: Mushroom beef tofu soup - really tasty.came out bubbling hot, asked for medium level spice and it was very pleasant and balanced. Soup had great savory flavor with a nice chili notes, and beefy notes. Silken tofu helped cut some of the heat,. veggies rounded out the dish. Banchan - okay selection of kimchi, potato, cold tofu, and zucchini kimchi, all were on the large chunky side, with decent flavor but nothing noteworthy Crispy rice that accompanied the tofu soup was fantastic, perfectly crunchy and tasty with a slight char added great texture to the tofu soup Drinks: Banana Makgeoli - sweet, creamy, slightly effervescent, a unique rice wine with a banana flavor Service was fine, quick and efficient, staff brought out dishes quickly and brought out water, banchan and drinks promptly after ordering. Overall really enjoyed the tofu soup here, super warm and comforting, portions are generous and service is quick. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I went here on a cold night and the tofu soup was amazing. Great way to warm up and I'd recommend trying the fried chicken as well. Our server was really attentive and we never had to wait long for anything. The inside also has a really cozy feel with a traditional Korean vibe. Highly recommend this place if you're craving something warm and delicious.

Yelp
While visiting friends in the area, we came to Pyeong Chang Tofu House for lunch. All three of us were absolutely starving, so we ordered a ton of food! We each picked an item off the menu and ended up sharing everything. We ordered the mushroom tofu soup, the kimchi bibimbap, and the bulgogi. We had fun ordering three different levels of spice for the tofu soup - the mushroom tofu soup, and the two complementary soups that came with the other dishes. We all agreed that the "very spicy" was delicious and cleared out any congestion, but felt that the more "medium spice" made the dishes the most enjoyable. All in all, the portions were large, the side dishes were plentiful, and the food was delicious. I would definitely come back the next time I am in the area.

Yelp
PCTH is my family's favorite spot for Korean food (a la carte, not bbq) in East Bay. We come here regularly for weeknight dinners, always get seated quickly and enjoy the food. Service is quick and friendly. The tables are good for groups, too. We regularly order the kalbi, spicy pork, tofu soup, bibimbap and cold noodles. Highly recommend the cold noodles in summer! The spicy pork and kalbi (main meat dishes) are a bit pricey for the quantity, but we still get them and enjoy. Everything is so flavorful and filling. Always a plus knowing that when I come home, we'll be going to Pyeong Chanf at least once.

Yelp
Came here with my friend to catch up over dinner! First off the service was great and the servers were kind and attentive. The restaurant itself has a good amount of seating so we didn't wait too long. Definitely a nice place to come for some comforting Korean food! Dumpling Tofu Soup 8/10 - Came with some sides which tasted fresh. The soup itself was excellent! Definitely one of the better sundubu's I've had! The price of the soup itself seemed a bit expensive to me but perhaps this is the normal going rate these days as I've seen the prices on these go up over the years! Inflation :( Yang Nyum Chicken 8.5/10 - Let me just say wow, the sweet chili sauce on the chicken is very good! The chicken was crispy and wasn't too spicy. Definitely getting your hands dirty a bit with this one but it's worth. Would highly recommend! My friend and I enjoyed our meal here and I would recommend this place if you're looking for some solid Korean food!

Yelp
After landing in Oakland, we headed straight to this spot and walked in right when they opened their doors during evening hours at 5pm. We walked into a dining room that can accommodate small to large parties. The Banchan arrived first which included four unlimited sides, which included sprouts, kimchi, pickled spicy cucumbers, and soft potatoes. Our favorite was the cucumbers which paired well with the meal. Starving, we ordered the Soy Sauce and Fresh Garlic Chicken Wings that came with a small side of Daikon. A half order comes with 10 wings. The wings were delicious! They were crispy, meaty, and so flavorful. This was a non spicy dish. We also tried the Kim Chi Bi Bim Bap with Beef. The dish arrived piping hot with a fried egg on top. A comforting rice dish topped with kimchi, carrots. spinach, sprouts, and beef. You'll get to enjoy the crispy rice once you reach the bottom. A side of tofu soup was included and I ordered it mild. The broth was spicy and flavorful, filled with tofu. I saved most of it to take home. Finally, we tried the tofu dumpling soup, which arrived bubbling hot. The Stew contained beef and kimchi dumplings and was totally what we were looking for when picking a dinner spot. Overall, great services and delicious food! The area is filled with many Korean options and we were happy to have found this spot.

Yelp
I never thought to come in here until a friend said she was craving Korean food. Looking over the menu, how do you decide what to get, there is a lot to choose from. We had a group of 4, 3 of us had never been here so we completely over ordered. To start we ordered: Kimchi pancake Mung bean pancake Chicken wings: regular and soy garlic Soju cocktail I didn't try the mung bean, but the Kimchi pancake was the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft inside. Those that tried the mung bean pancake also loved it. The chicken wings were very big, our favorite was the soy garlic one. It seemed pricey for wings but there were worth it. Not sure what cocktail we got, but it was delicious. For our mains, a friend and I shared the Del Sot Bi Bim Bop, it came with their original tofu soup The Bi Bim Bop was lacking in flavor, I figured for over $20, it would taste good, but it was a bit disappointing, the savior of the meal was the tofu soup, I had never had tofu soup before and this was amazing!!! It was so good I ordered it the next day for delivery. Pro tip: it's way better in the clay pot when you dine in. The service was great and attentive. They made sure our waters were filled and that we had everything we needed.

Yelp
Fantastic authentic Korean dishes as confirmed by my aunt who is from Seoul. Huge portions enough to share. Bulgogi was hot and spicy as was their excellent chicken wings. . Be sure to order their seafood pancake.

Yelp
Best Korean food I've had in the Bay Area! Excellent food and awesome service by Nathan! Starting off with the Banchan. Each one had its own distinct taste and so flavorful. The tofu soup was comfort food. Wings were on point delicious. Nathan was really friendly and sincere. The first time I've been at a Korean restaurant in the Bay Area where the server offered more Banchan and refilled water without asking. Such a great plus! Very satisfied with our experience tonight. Thank you Nathan and compliments to the chef!

Yelp
In agreement with what many others have said, Pyeong Chang offers excellent food and a pleasant staff, but it wasn't elevated to a degree that justified the higher price point compared to the flurry of korean restaurants across oakland and east bay. Tofu soup was quite good, but didn't stand out and was also smaller in portion than I'd hoped. Kimchi pancake was crispy and greasy, quite sumptuous, but I didn't taste the kimchi that much. The side of charred rice was a unique touch. Not much else sticks out.

Yelp
01/03/2023 I went again, party of 2 with more confidence and this time we made good decisions! An Asahi, seafood (extra crispy haemool) pancake with semi-vinagery oil-balancing dipping sauce for appetizer. We really loved and ravished their aged kimchi and seasoned sesame cucumber side dishes. The other couple side dishes such as wakame seaweed bean sprouts and soybean potato were on the mild, okay, delectable side. They didn't leave much strong impression on me. But the first two were like wow to me! Definitely raised the bar from my prior visit. Pyeong Yang style buckwheat soybean cold noodle. My first time trying it. It was bland, it was thick. I wasn't sure how to savor it. I don't think I ate it right or how to appreciate it well. I mean, I like its counterpart the sour-style naengmyun and I wanted to try a cold dish and this restaurant was known for its soybean products, so I figured that I would try a new dish. I think, it was just not the right weather to try it. I couldn't finish it, I didn't have the right appetite for it. I felt embarrassed for my companion. Their order though was better, and the next table over... dol sot bi bim bap. He ordered with beef. It came with a side of soon doo boo (soft tofu in hot stone), it looked and tasted really good! I wish I wasn't as stubborn and just followed peer-pressure and order what everyone else had instead of trying to be cool and be unique and did my own thing. I'd come back and try their protein style. I think they really nail their grill and casserole works there. I could still close my eyes and smell it still. Ahhh~~ ------an earlier visit several years earlier------ I am very indecisive when looking at long menu . This place was not an exception. I like I want to read them all. But I guess it could be a good thing since I wound up starting with flavored soju. It was soju + flavored syrup. I wish they had been a little more creative. Like the food tho. Uhm, expect to smell like Korean BBQ when you leave the premise. It could probably use more ventilation.

Yelp
The prices are pretty expensive but I have not frequented much Korean restaurants lately so it may just be our economy lol The soondubu (soft tofu soup) was good. It did not blow me away but it was a nice, warm soup for the chilly night. Staff were busy and it was honestly hard to flag someone down when we needed something. Street parking - make sure you don't leave valuables in your car.

Yelp
Ordered the tofu mushroom soup for takeout with banchan and it was to dieeee for post being sick. The potato was the standout for me in the babchan which was pleasantly sweeter which complimented the pickled cucumbers and kimchi. Had to come back to eat in-person a couple weeks after and the restaurant atmosphere and customer service was amazing! Quick, friendly, and accommodating. Love it here! Need to try other things in the menu.

Yelp
Great for individual tofu soups and delicious meat dishes with good-sized portions. Don't forget the original one is on Telegraph Ave in Oakland, the busier of the two locations. Recommend this location because they give you crispy rice in a bowl automatically on the side to our surprise. Be ready to take leftovers home.
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
The food is pretty good but my god the value is atrocious. $24 for a seafood pancake is not worth it. $21 for a regular sized bowl of sundubu is not worth it. i get south korean soft power skyrocketed over the pandemic but man, I cannot justify paying $55 for two people to eat what essentially is pretty standard korean fare.

Christen R.

Yelp
My favorite tofu house ever. I come every week and the tofu soup and kimchi pancake are my go to!

Yelp
There's absolutely nothing else like Pyeong Chang Tofu House. I miss it terribly, especially on cold or gloomy days, since a bowl of bubbling hot soondubu does wonders to lift the spirit. Incredibly vegan friendly, which is also rare for Korean food, they're very knowledgeable and happily provide only plant-based banchan upon request too. Those are unlimited, by the way, so if you play your cards right, you can fully indulge in bean sprouts, mashed tofu, simmered potatoes, and more, while taking most of your entree home for a second meal later. Like most things, it's a place best enjoyed with friends. Start with pancakes, share cold noodles, fight over bites of crispy rice expertly excavated from the bibimbap. You'll end up with a table absolutely overflowing with food. Everything is made from scratch at this family-owned restaurant. It's exactly what we need to support to keep alive.

Yelp
My favorite tofu soup in the Bay Area! I've been coming here for years and it always hits the spot. Downside is that the cost of tofu soup is getting pricey! They offer a variety of tofu soups you can (based on the fixings you like in it) and other dishes (Korean fried chicken, bossam, pancake, etc.). I tend to order the mushroom tofu soup - comes with beef and tofu. You can choose your spice level. I love their extra spicy - actually has a nice kick to it. They used to give you a free egg to crack into your soup but now you have to pay for it. They bring out the rice in a stone pot. Once they scoop out all the rice, the rest of it becomes burnt rice! So good on its own and dipping into your soup. They don't give too many different side dishes but good selection (kimchi, cucumbers, potato, & tofu). I really liked their kimchi pancake. Some places make them thick where it's too soft of a texture. Here, they make it thin and just the right amount of crispness. Great appetizer to share! Good service, attentive and moves pretty quick when you ask for side refills (or just need something in general). Tables are pretty big, most likely will have to share one of the longer tables if your group's small. Street parking can get a little difficult since there's so many other restaurants around.

Yelp
This is one of our faves, and has been in regular lunch rotation for almost 15 years. Our daughter, now 11, has been going her entire life, and loves it. We come for casual lunches, and has been my request for Mother's Day lunch, and birthday lunch, etc, because we love it so much. Comforting hot bubbling tofu soup, rice with a crispy crunchy bottom in stone bowls, delicious dol sot bibimbap, banchan, friendly service, yes, please! My only recent disappointment was that their Oakland location finally succumbed to the changes they made at the Berkeley location... mushrooms inside the batter of the mung bean pancake. I'm allergic to mushrooms and love the pancake, but the Oakland location was where they only placed it on top of the batter, not mixed in like Berkeley. Today we learned they now mix it in at Oakland too. Sigh. @pyeongchangtofuhouse, I plead with you to keep the batter as you did for the many years prior, add the mushrooms per order, so that I can order mine without. Please!!! Still love it there, but hope someone from the restaurant reads this and hears my plea. Let the mung bean pancake be modified to have no mushrooms, please!!! Please!!! Or maybe this is a sign for us to branch out and try other Korean restaurants in the area. I'm a creature of habit, I wish I didn't have to.

Yelp
Edit: the manager called me bc I was also overcharged and I happened to mention that the seafood pancake wasn't good when I came and she was really apologetic and sympathetic about the quality. As a consumer, I really appreciate that she listened to me and offered to refund it. It's touches like this that make me want to continue to support a business. I've been here a bunch of times and enjoyed it but the most recent visit was a huge disappointment. I often get the seafood pancake, and it's full of different types of seafood (squid, shrimp, mussels). This time, it only came with squid and each piece had 2 small pieces MAX, for $24!!!!! Which meant, most bites were just batter....

Yelp
A solid spot for Korean food! The service is fast and friendly, and the place is clean and spacious. They close briefly between lunch and dinner, so just be aware not to come in on their off time. Street parking was pretty easy around the area. Orders: Kimchi pancake: the crispiest pancake you'll ever eat. I loved the flavor, large pieces of kimchi throughout the pancake, and wonderfully paired sauce. Def a must try. Mushroom tofu soup (medium): a hearty portion of a variety of mushrooms and soft tofu, topped with a fresh cracked egg. The best comfort food, imo. It came with a bowl of white rice that they scooped for us, as well as the extra crispy rice from the bottom of the stone pot. It was SO satisfying to crack the crispy rice. It also added a nice texture and tasted great with the soup. The assortment of sides were pretty good. A tofu dish (my favorite), seaweed dish, potato, and kimchi. Overall, I will 100% be coming back here the next time I'm in the bay.

Yelp
Recently visited Pyeong Chang for the 2nd time. I ended up going with the tofu stew with beef and splitting a kimchi pancake with a friend. Our soup came with rice and banchan as well. I thought the stew was flavorful and well spiced. Perfect for the rainy weather we've been having. The banchan were tasty and the crispy rice at the bottom of our rice bowl paired well with the soup. The kimchi pancake was crispy but not fried too hard. Excellent service from our waitress as well. I would say they're a bit on the pricier side, but hey inflation affects all of us. Great experience overall.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner here. I wouldn't say it's the best soon dobu I've ever had but it was tasty and satisfied my craving. Seafood pancake was really yummy, had the right amount of seafood. Dolsot bibimbap comes with a small tofu soup too. It's a busy restaurant so I highly recommend making reservations. We had to flag down our server a few times to get water refills. The table is oddly very wide so you're quite far from the people sitting across from you and because the restaurant is quite loud, we struggled to hear each other over the noise level. Unfortunately our night ended badly as our cars had their windows broken. We parked right near Telegraph on 48th and were very careful not to have anything in our car but they still smashed our window. Our friends literally parked right in front of the restaurant on 47th and the same thing happened to them too! Sadly, we will not be returning to this area for any eat in dining anymore. It's just not worth the risk.

Yelp
Five stars for food Four stars for the pricing It's a good restaurant with a good ambience, but the price tags are pretty healthy for a Korean restaurant.

Yelp
I forgot to take a photo of the main dish we ordered. We ordered gruff chicken and the army stew. I really really liked the fried chicken with garlic sauce. It was seriously crispy outside and juicy/tender inside. The sauce, on top of it, is right on point. Not too sweet, not too savory. The army stew was average, especially with it being on the pricy side. The waiters here are cute and quick to respond. I would come back and try more stuff.

Yelp
Came on a weekday for dinner and we didn't have to wait for seating. The seafood tofu soup was nothing special, but there was a good variety of seafood in the soup which was nice. My favorite was the kimchi pancake! So warm and crispy, I love the texture.

Yelp
I visited Pyeong Chang Tofu House for the first time on a Friday evening around 7:30 pm. We added our name to the Yelp waitlist before heading over. Regardless, there was plenty of space and we didn't wait at all before being seated. FOOD: We ordered a kimchi tofu soup, combination tofu soup, and a bi bim bap, which also comes with a "baby" tofu soup so you get the best of both worlds! In addition, we had yummy banchan and rice that came with our soups. I can confidently say that the tofu soup really hit the spot for me and satisfied all my cravings. It was mildly spicy, incredibly flavorful and tasty, and steaming hot. The bi bim bap was also delicious, especially the crunchy rice at the bottom of the bowl. SERVICE: Overall service was great, can't complain. Our food came out pretty quickly and our servers were attentive.

Yelp
The food, ambiance, and service were all good. The side dishes were super yummy! They even have their kimchi for sale.

Yelp
Food is great but only thing i want to give a constructive feedback is on bossam in terms of quantity. I do not feel $50 worth for the quantity I am getting for pork meat. We always order this item when we go and the portion has been very unstable. Other than that, grilled fish and pancakes are what we recommend.

Yelp
Came here for Sunday lunch and there was still seating in the restaurant. The staff and servers were very friendly and approachable. They served a few banchan dishes which were delicious. At Pyeong Chang, they serve the rice in a stone pot. Later in the meal, they will use a metal stick to serve you the rice that has crisped up on the bottom. The soondubu is hot and flavorful and the yangnyeom chicken is crispy with a sweet addicting glaze. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
This restaurant specializes in Tofu soups. The moment you walk in the dining area, you will sense it's a traditional Korean food place. All the settings and deco reflects the authenticity. We ordered the seafood tofu soup and the beef/Vega served in the hot stone bowl. I was surprised the Bim Bi Bap came with the tofu soup too. The appetizers were straight forward, simple and tasty. Our favorite is the tofu w/ spinach. The mild hot sauce compliments the beef rice nicely. The seafood tofu soup also has rice served in the hot stone bowl, which is interesting and rare. The waiters were attentive and friendly whenever we requested refilling the appetizers. It is really a nice and non pretentious restaurant.

Yelp
I highly recommend Pyeong Chang Tofu House. The inside decor reminds me of an authentic Korean restaurant straight from South Korea. We came right when they opened at 5PM, and sat down right away. The menu had a variety of pancakes, bi bim bap, soups, meats, and stews to choose from. We ordered the kimchi bi bim bap, gal bi, and half order of the Yang Nyum chicken. The entrees come with white rice in a stone pot and a side of tofu soups (you can choose your heat level). Our server brought out the rice in the stone pot and scooped the rice into metal bowls for us. After, he scraped the sides of the remaining rice in the pot and flipped it over, revealing the beautiful crispy rice we all know and love! Shortly after, the remainder of our food came out. The banchan tasted very authentic and fresh, the gal bi meat was tender, the chicken was perfectly crispy and sauced, and the soup had the perfect amount of heat (we both asked for medium spicy). I want to highlight the service we received. He was so attentive, very efficient, came at the right times to check in on us; he provided the best service I've experienced in SF/Oakland. My bf doesn't give out compliments, but he also highlighted how great the service and food was. A SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT: ** My boyfriend and I were here for an hour (5-6PM). Within that time frame, 2 cars got broken into a block away from the restaurant (one of them was parked right behind ours), so please be careful not to leave anything in your car if you decide to drive, or I'd recommend taking an Uber. **

Yelp
Best Korean food in the area. Mouthwatering food and phenomenal service. We ordered the Dumpling Tofu Soup, Combination Tofu Soup, and Half & Half Chicken (Original & Soy Sauce and Garlic). The tofu was some of the softest tofu I've had. I got medium spice level and didn't think it was too spicy. It was not overly salty. It was a lighter tofu soup than ones I've had before and I liked it more. The chicken was perfect. Crisp and flavorful. The two flavors we got balanced one another well. I liked the soy sauce and garlic flavor more but it was heavier than the original. Essentially I'd be able to eat more of the original than the soy sauce and garlic since it wouldn't upset my stomach as much but I liked the soy sauce and garlic more. The ban chan was also so so delicious. I can't emphasize how great the service was. They checked in several times. They asked if we wanted more ban chan. They answered our questions about the menu with great detail. The part that stood out the most is the way they served the rice. They scoop the rice for you to you and later come back to scrape the crunchy rice on the edges off of the hot stone. It was pricier than I expected but insanely worth it. Probably around $$$ rather $$. I originally wanted to order the Short Rib Beef Stew (Galbi Tang) but they were sold out. I can't wait to come back and try the entire menu! Really recommend Pyeong Chang Tofu House.

Yelp
Warning: Guilty pleasure served scalding hot! "Thanks" to the pandemic, it's been a while since I visited this spot or its sister location in Berkeley, so the craving for some scalding hot (both temperature- and spice-wise) tofu soup has been going strong. The place is super casual but the food is of the type that leaves you very, very happy and in need of a serious nap :D. I am a fan of their vegetarian soup (with a raw egg to add to the still boiling and bubbling tofu goodness). It is packed with flavors and delivers a kick even if you don't go for the extra hot version. On the appetizer front, you can choose from a few pancake options: we went with the seafood one this time around, and it was delicious. You also get a good variety in the banchan, of which I really enjoyed the kimchi and the cucumber salad. Our barley tea got lost in translation somewhere but it was ok - there was too much food anyway, with little to no room for any extras. Just what the doctor ordered on a surprisingly rainy and cold day.

Yelp
This place is great bc it's always opened. I come here for dinner a lot and it always have open seats even though we have pretty big parties. I like that the table here are big enough for all the side dishes plus the food we ordered. The service was friendlier and faster than the on in Berkeley as they are short of staffs the last time I was there. However, the food quaillity here isn't as good as the new one. My friends and I always get tofu soups, bibimbap, seafood pancakes and fried chickens here as these are their signature dishes her.

Yelp
This place reminds me home cooking. The ambience felt cozy and casual. The service was attentive. We tried the kimchi pancake and tofu soup. Both were authentic and delicious! I was impressed by how crispy, but not oily, the pancake was. I was also a fan of how they serve the rice in a stone pot so you could eat the burnt bottom part at the end. I have a feeling this might become my go to comfort food restaurant in east bay. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
So glad I found out about this place. It's a really good Korean food spot. I love the veggies that the plates come with, and the fact that some plates, like the bibimbap comes with tofu soup and also crispy rice. It's pretty amazing. The wait is also pretty fast at least on a week night and everything I had was amazing. I loved the bibimbap and the wings were also really popular - crispy and flavorful. The service was also friendly and fast. Wish there were more locations further down the East bay, but glad it exists! I'll be coming back here for sure.

Yelp
The food was so yummy here!! My friends and I ordered chicken to share and I ordered some bibimbap (that also came with tofu soup). The food proportion to the price is very worth it and everything is super flavorful. No complaints about the service either. Our food came out around the same time. This place is good for a casual date, family dinner, or friend hangout. The decorations are cute and there's a lot of tables for big groups!

Yelp
Please don't read this if you're about to eat, or if you just ate. This review is for takeout. First, it was a small piece of hair in my rice. Probably an eyelash and if it were any longer, I would've thrown the whole thing out. My mistake. I removed it and moved on. Then...then...oh dear reader...then I took another bite. And discovered something hard. And took it out of my mouth. The shock. The horror. It was a NAIL clipping. A substantial one too. I can't even compute right now, I feel so sick to my stomach. I thought for a while now that the quality of my beloved tofu house was plummeting. Now it's beyond confirmed. I will never return again.

Yelp
Satisfied our craving of tofu soup on a cold day. Not the best tofu soup I've had but good regardless. Items ordered: ~Seafood Pancake: I was expecting this to be more crispy. ~Seafood Tofu Soup ~Vegetarian Tofu Soup: Loved the veggies including mushrooms, zucchini, and more in this. They even added seaweed. ~They gave us crispy rice on the house. Thank you!!
