I am a big fan of restaurants that work as a portal-- you know they take you to a foreign land by bite and decor. And when I was invited to try Rasselbock, I was excited--- cause I was going to Germany- again- I've been there, and when to a beer hall. So I expected to go Rasselbock and enjoy beer in big comical, frosted glasses while the servers wore Ladderhossen. The Beer Garden experience here lacked- at least how I imagined it. Yet, I still loved the food, it was exceptional.
Now, I am not a beer drinker. I never developed a taste for alcohol. So when I got the Rasselbock early, I did not know what to get. I asked for guidance from my server. She highlighted a pear cider. Which was good. I wonder if you get other fruit cidered--- you know like strawberry cider, banana cider, huckleyberry cider..... who knows? The pear cider was pleasant cause it was on the sweeter side, just like I like my alcoholic beverages.
My dinner companion was named Bill. He is part German, by heritage. In the spot, they had pretzels--- you know those salty pretzels that are famous in Germany. I asked Bill, what do I do with it, he said eat it. I paused with joyous disbelief. He then said, comically, you wear it as a hat. I am sure it was- a you had to be there moment, but I lived it and it was good times.
When you go to a Mexican restaurant they have tortillas, to help you make mini tacos, when you go to a steak house they have Parker rolls to help sop the meat juices.... but I did not know how pretzels should be used. Like their design does not make them a vehicle for juices or pieces of meat. They seem like an appetizer, or something you get at a themed park, they do not seem to have a utility. But, I can say happily that I ate a Bavarian pretzel.
I got the Wiener Schniztel. It was made of chicken. And any images you have of the fast food chain, to help you understand this meal I ate should be dispelled from your mind's eye. This Schnitzel was breaded and friend. I asked for it to have a fried egg on top. And it was a crispy, delightful treat. I got Brussels on the side and red potatoes. I went basic with my sides, but the meal made me sing or to honor the fare of the country, the food made me yoddle with glee! I mean, that might be the only way to yoddle- cause I wonder if you can yoddle with grief, like at a funeral. I digress.
I did try Bill's egg noodles- the Spatula and it was great. And that seems more authentic. I finally had their blueberry dessert. And I am not sure what it was exactly-- but it took me to the tops of the Alps. It was a sublime dessert.
The place is good for drinking, and sports viewing, it is good for a date, or for friends to catch up. It is a versatile place with joyous food. I want to go back and try a variety of foods. But, I also want to go to a place that serves the same quality of food, but embraces the theme of being at Germany more strongly. Like I want suspenders, a tuba, and mountain goats around. But that is more to meet my fancy, if you just want good food and good drinks go here, you'll be happy!
