LIC Hotel That Offers COVID-19 Tests Before Entry Sees Raucous Parties - Eater NY

"Ravel Hotel in Long Island City is in hot water after facilitating a number of raucous weekend parties at its rooftop pool lounge, Gothamist reports. People flocked to the rooftop after it opened on June 25, in part because it was advertising rapid COVID-19 tests for all customers before entry. Once inside, the social distancing measures appeared to be extremely relaxed — many customers were filmed not wearing masks and standing in crowded quarters around the pool lounge. The rapid testing was billed by the hotel as creating a 'safe haven' for partygoers, but Gothamist reports that the process, called the Abbott tests, has been called into question by the FDA and other experts in the field for its rates of inaccuracy in detecting the virus. The medical partner that the hotel works with to administer the tests has also come under fire for overcharging lab fees for COVID-19 testing in the past. Ravel’s tests cost customers $35 with insurance and $50 without insurance, and some people had to wait as much as an hour and a half for their results before being able to enter the lounge. The hotel’s co-owner, Seth Levine, told Gothamist that Ravel has 'never guaranteed that what we’re doing is a 100% effective thing.' An official from the mayor’s office told the publication that the city is following up with the hotel owners to ensure that they are in compliance with social distancing guidelines, and the city’s Office of Nightlife confirmed that they also fielded complaints from Ravel and are in touch with the operators about the situation." - Erika Adams

Overall, I would give The Ravel hotel 3.5/5. Service was great, the people at the front desk were very friendly. However, when we first arrived to our room, we noticed our window was cracked open and there were a bunch of flies in our room, which I had to kill myself. There were also ants in our room so I highly suggest the hotel get pest control in. Our fridge wasn’t working either even though it was plugged in. The room was fine, very minimalist style. But we did have a great view of the bridge so I can’t complain.

Overall a fairly good experience. They have cool interior. The room looked great inside. There are some small things that could be improved if management wants to. Hence 4/5. Other positive things: - The room is quite spacious! I was surprised how big it is (esp for NYC)! Really not bad. Massive shower cabin 😀 - Staff was friendly - Gym: Quite decent. See attached picture. They have a set of dumbbells, which is the main equipment I use, so for me it was all good. (Small point: There sadly was no water machine in the gym) Negative stuff: - WiFi breaks off all the time when going to the bathroom. It was mostly fine when in the bedroom, but in the bathroom it became literally unusuable. Also in the gym the WiFi didn’t work. Having good WiFi seems kinda basic - Another frustrating thing: The light in the bedroom. First, there is not ceiling light (just why?). Second, I couldn’t open the curtains either because the windows go right do the pavement and otherwise my room becomes fully visible to everyone walking by, not always ideal. It felt quite frustrating being in a very dark room during the day - If you’re easily annoyed by loud noises, be a bit careful. The doors they use don’t have good noise protection. Luckily, with the setup of the room, there are two doors covering against the noise coming from the corridor; having 2 doors deffo help. But there was also quite some noise coming from the street. In the end noise wasn’t too much of an issue for me. But I know other people for whom noise is a much bigger issue, so just keep that in mind - No proper charging spots next to the bed Other points: - I’d consider this a good location cause it’s close to central NYC. Takes about 15 mins walking to the next metro station. The direct neighbourhood and the streets right outside the hotel aren’t overly nice Overall these points aren’t meant to sound too negative, I had a pretty good time

Overall the hotel is a bit rustic, has been given a little bit of touch up with pain and neon signs. The amenities are bare minimum, there was a valet sign but no valet available. Guests are expected to park themselves and then pay for spot. The room was spacious with a huge bathroom and a balcony either a great view of the bridge and city skyline. But a couple of hours into the stay we noticed there was no water in the bathroom. We brought it up to the front desk staff from whom we found out (the water has been out for the “block”) due to some pipe burst and it was out of their hands. They reported they themselves found out about it 30 minutes prior and water should be back in a couple of hours. This was 7:30 PM and I got frightened as there was no guarantee the water would come back. I read some review earlier that also mentioned their toilet did not flush so maybe this is an internal plumbing issue. The reception staff was very cooperative however and they were able to get a refund approved by the manager however, I did notice a bit of a nonchalant attitude of the staff for such a big issue. They also did not make another guest aware of this issue which they were checking in and only brought it up to the next group of guests once I confronted them about it. Overall, my experience was sour because of this issue and even though I did not have the full stay I could notice that there are some aspects this hotel needs some working to improve the comfort of the guests. We ended up booking another hotel and got a nice stay.

We stayed here 5 nights as a family of four. The room was spacious with a big bathroom and a balcony. River views from the balcony are great. The staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful. The area is on the industrial side next to a film studios, which made it interesting. They were filming out on the street on the second day we were there. We felt safe whilst we were there and the hotel was around a 15 minute walk from the subway and the NYC ferry. We had some plumbing issues in the room but the staff sorted it out, no bother. Would definitely stay again, good value for money.

Spacious rooms, skyline views, and a resort-like vibe just minutes from Manhattan. The Ravel Hotel went above and beyond. As a frequent traveler, I’ve stayed in many NYC hotels — and here, you’re getting so much more than you would in Midtown, all at a much better value. The room was absolutely lovely — spacious, well-appointed, and thoughtfully designed with a warm, woodsy feel and rich leather accents. It struck the right balance between modern comfort and understated luxury, with a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline and East River. Less than 3 miles from Penn Station, it was an easy ride into the city — quick and seamless without traffic, and still very doable even with it. The rooftop dining added to the experience — stylish, scenic, and a welcome contrast to the city’s bustle. There’s also a seasonal rooftop pool that brings a bit of resort energy to Long Island City. Service was excellent, and the hotel has a quiet confidence that made the stay feel relaxing and elevated. For anyone seeking space, style, and a touch of luxury just outside Manhattan, I highly recommend the Ravel. It’s also a smart pick for weddings or events — the views alone make it a standout.

Wow, where to start? Room has no chest of drawers to put clothes, constant noise in hallway every night for 4 nights (not only people with loud voices, but some kind of noise involving rolling something like a cart), No access to internet (we were given password but never able to get on the internet), no restaurant, 1 drink vending machine and 1 snack machine for 5 floors ($3.00 for bottled water and it was out twice in 4 days), no place to eat within walking distance. Room was not filthy but was dusty. When I made the reservation, I did not know there is a nightclub on top and the noise that goes with that. The room was probably a decent value for NYC but the photos online do not tell the story.||On the other hand, the bed was comfy and it was a great shower.

I had the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had at the Ravel. After getting our room key, we entered our room to find other guests in there. To me, that is extremely unsafe, scary and a breach of privacy. How in the world are you going to give guests a working room key for a room already occupied?? What if the guests inside were children, not clothed, sleeping? The lady in the room was so confused and shocked! If it were the other way around I would have been TERRIFIED that strangers just opened my door and entered my room. We went back to the desk and they had mixed up two reservation confirmation numbers and gave our room to the wrong people. Therefore we were moved to a different area away from the wedding party. Aside from other reasons I did not enjoy my stay (cleanliness, temperature issues, noise) these are things I can brush off. But the feeling of being unsafe like a stranger can open my door at any time really was terrifying.

Great hotel as long as you're not planning on trying to relax in your room between 11 am and 8 pm. The owners can't seem to decide if they want to own a hotel or a dance club. No soundproofing in the rooms to drown out the rooftop dance music.
