The Best Pastries at Three West Village Bakeries - Eater NY

"Is it a pasticceria? A ristorante? A gelateria? It’s all of those things and it’s an all-day shrine to eleganza, from its marble surfaces to its stylish packaging — there’s even a grand piano on display. Named for its owner, Sicilian-born Francesco Realmuto, it’s the latest addition to the Realmuto Hospitality Group, whose holdings include Filaga Pizzeria and L’Arte Del Gelato, both located in Chelsea Market. The gelato at Realmuto is some of the best in the city. It’s also the standout among the large selection of sweet things at this atrium of fancy Italian comestibles. Skip the cookies; they range from disappointing to middling. Pass on the cannoli, too; they’re pre-stuffed, so their shells sog out in the refrigerated case. But pastry chef Giuseppe Zito’s entremets are technically well-executed and are just the sort of thing to bring to a dinner party. The Fragolina is a stunner, shaped and colored like the wild strawberry. The featured berry sits in compote form at the center of the confection, enveloped by a soft Haitian vanilla cream with a zing from lime zest. And if you like Swiss Miss pudding or Ferrero Rocher bonbons, chances are you’ll enjoy the mini (or large-format) Realmuto; it brings two mousses together — one hazelnut, one chocolate — under a coating of shiny, dark-chocolate glaze. I’m looking forward to the holiday season, because Zito was crowned the world champion for his panettone and he’s brought them here." - Charlotte Druckman

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"If you’ve got a hankering for panettone, good news: the head pastry chef at Realmuto Alta Pasticceria in the West Village apparently won a world championship for the Italian specialty. His mammoth pasticceria and restaurant is in the old West Village Gourmet Garage space. In addition to Italian pastries, they’ve got a lunch and dinner menu full of pastas and other trattoria classics." - will hartman

We came for some pastries and left highly satisfied. The speciality item is the realmuto, which is chocolate mousse and hazelnut filling. It was delicious, creamy, some nice bitter dark chocolate and tasty hazelnut. It was a delicious experience.

If you're skimming the reviews and confused about the mixed ratings, I'll offer my hypothesis that people's experiences seem to depend on which items they ordered. I came here for entremet pastries, and I left satisfied. We got the Sole del West Village (vanilla sponge cake, almong crumbs, mango, lime and passionfruit mousse and gelee, vanilla and almond mousse) and the Mini Rose (chocolate sponge cake, pistacchio crumbs, rhum mousse, raspberry gelee, passion fruit, mango mousse). At $12 each (cheap by Manhattan standards, esp. West Village), I was surprised by how soft, fluffy, flavorful, and complex they both were--not to mention, not too sweet! Entremets aren't common in Italian bakeries, in my experience, and with Realmuto's plentiful other offerings, it might be easy to overlook them in favor of the more standard gelato, bread pastries, etc. But I wouldn't sleep on these entremets--they're almost on par with some of the most well-known French/Asian patisseries in the city, and several dollars cheaper to boot. Bonus: Plentiful seating, gorgeous decor and friendly staff. Will be back.

The location is excellent! I really like this kind of delicate little shop inside the station. Having a cup of coffee here feels so ceremonial. I tried a refined dessert with my favorite pistachios—it had great layers of flavor and was truly unique.

Google
Dessert was just "yummy". From the cannolo, to the mini pistacchio to gelato ans others.. . They offer a vareity & all fresh. Service was courteous & on point. I could go on & on....but you NEED to try them for yourselves..

Gorgeous space with nice deep green velvet curtains and a true Southern Italy feel. I went to Realmuto twice. Although unexceptionable, the gelato is very pleasant. Such a big pastry could use a bigger variety of flavors to chose from. I purchased to go a Mont Blanc and a bag of butter cookies dipped in chocolate and filled with "pistachio cream" as described by the salesperson... Well... The Mont Blanc was made with white chocolate and was lacking in chestnut cream and meringue which was quite disapointing. The Mont Blanc is a mythical French pastry which does not call for white chocolate : do it the right way or change your version of the original which was clearly downgraded to an overly sweet and vague version of the exquisite original French version. As for the cookies , they were filled with a weird mix which seemed like white chocolate colored in green. Between the time the cookies were made and the time I purchased them to bring them home, that filling had dried out and was not eatable. I was sold a low quality white chocolate filling instead of pistachio cream. I doubt I will return a third time.

Google
Beautiful Italian bakery in the West Village. Realmuto staff are very welcoming and helpful. I really enjoyed the variety of desserts that they offered. Really enjoyed the passionfruit mousse, dark chocolate raspberry jam, and coconut biscotti mini. I definitely recommend going here if you're in the mood for something sweet. I'll have to try their cheesecake next time.

Must go!! Beyond amazing spot to lounge or work at. Beautiful aesthetic, clean, lovely ambience with music and lighting. I went there to study and was very productive. It was not too busy on a weekday mid-day. The latte was excellent but the star of the show had to be the hazelnut chocolate sponge cake. It looked delicious behind the glass but it was much more than I was expecting. The flavors blended synergistically, it was ideally balanced, not too sweet. Please try the sponge cake if you come here, it will change everything for you…..

Yelp
Beautiful spacious restaurant & bakery. On the left you can see people working in the bakery. In the center of the restaurant, there are beautiful glass cases showcasing all of their pastries, a coffee bar, a gelato counter and a smaller casual seating area. On the right is a smaller formal dining area with a bar. We stumbled upon this place walking down 7th. The kids were melting down and we all needed a treat. Kids got gelato. We got a custard creme pastry and a cappuccino. Everything was delicious! Can't wait to try this out for a meal.

Yelp
This was a quick stop to get out of the rain but have a pre-dinner snack. I ordered an earl grey tea and two scoops of gelato. The cafe is beautiful and modern. It's clean, sleek, and spacious. The display of all the colorful pastries and gelato add to the beauty of the space. The servers were friendly and quick with our order. The gelato was delicious. The earl grey tea was okay. I think that it's a little overpriced for what I ordered.

Yelp
This is a large nice looking new Italian spot. It's part restaurant which had a chic atmosphere and part a very fancy bakery which has a bright counter showcasing a wide variety of pastries as well as gelato. I tried two cookies which were $8 in total + tax so around $8.70 which is a bit pricey (just a bit.) I got the Visciole Ubriache (or drunken cherry) and the Fastuca (or pistachio.) The former has almonds and cherry and the latter has almonds and of course pistachio. Said visciole was more unique. I prefer sour cherries heavily and they did have a very mild alcohol flavor (if I had to guess there was some type of red wine cooked with said cherries but I might be mistaken as the flavor was faint.) The almond texture was nice and this cookie; while pricey; was moderately worth it as it was more unique. The fastuca reminded me to an extent of some marzipan based cookies sold at a local outstanding place by me called Monteleone's though the difference is those have a better pistachio flavor and cost $20 a pound instead of $4 each. The flavor was tasty as it was a good mix of nuts and it had a better texture compared to the visciole but I wouldn't bother again. Two fancy but tasty cookies. Of course, cookies made from these ingredients would cost more as there is less butter and other filler ingredients (which is why pignoli/pinolate cookies are easily the most expensive cookies found in any Italian bakery,) but these are a bit too much. I would prefer to back and try their gelato or perhaps even their dinner before deciding if this spot is worth it. At this point, the flavor is a mid 3 and the price point is a mid 2.

Yelp
I was starving having just arrived in the city, and this beautifully designed shop looked appealing. I popped in and picked up a bready "boat" filled with ham and cheese. I didn't pay attention and realized it was close to $10. While it was actually visually appealing, for the amount of food, it was a little eye watering. And frankly, a bit bland.

Yelp
I was randomly walking in the West village I came across this beautiful restaurant! It was stunning and felt like wonderful place to grab a quick desert or sit down for a meal. The staff was so friendly and attentive. We got the desserts and I will say the cannolis were amazing. The secret that was shared is that they import their crema from Italy and you can tell. It is on a different level and I will be going again. Must try: all the cannolis!

Yelp
New Italian restaurant plus pastry and cake shop! Good selection of tarts, bomboloni, cakes, and other sweets and pastries. Prices are high - $4 for baby-sized pastries and $10 for regular ones, but at least it feels like a more legit experience than somewhere like Eataly. Tried the mini-flan which was decent, I'd like ti come back during dinner hours to try the hot food sometime. Clean, upscale vibe with lots of newly-remodeled glistening marble surfaces inside.

Yelp
Hubby and I came for date and we overheard some people saying "Realuto Is finally opened" so we walked over to check it out. It's half restaurant half fancy schmancy dessert place. Small desserts starting at a steep price of $10. It's good but probably wouldn't come back for a second time.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood on a warm weekend day. I cam here to try their gelatos. I tried their Te Verde (green tea) gelato, Ciocolatto al latte, pistachio, and cookie and cream gelato. My favorite was the green tea gelato. They have a lot of pastries. Will definitely come back for a visit to try other gelatos and pastries.

Yelp
Dropped by on a Sunny day to tried their gelato. Restaurant was very nice and spacious. Lots of pastries, cake dessert, you can order to sit in or to go. Also you can have a sit down dinner if you want. Decided to only go for a gelato. I got the chocolate Hazelnut chocolate gelato and it did impressed me. Love the mixed flavor and you can't go wrong with chocolate. My cup was packed with a full scoop of delicious.

Yelp
I just visited Realmuto, located at 117 7th Ave South in New York City's West Village. For me this place is a charming Italian restaurant that offers an Italian culture and cuisine. At Realmuto, I love delicious Italian sweets bomboloni, cannoli, and more. The coffee was so good test. The restaurant also offers a full-service lunch and dinner menu, we love the homemade pastas here. The service was nice and friendly. The restaurant looks nice, beautiful and clean. Realmuto is a must-visit for a quick espresso, enjoy lunch or dinner, or enjoy dessert with friends and family for anyone who loves authentic Italian cuisine.

Yelp
Very simple Italian food they didn't have me WOWed because of the prices. Not sure if they're still doing dinner pastas but my green raviolis filled with cheese and drizzled with olive oil for over $40 was not out of this world. It's a cute place in a busy area but haven't seen yet what makes them stand out in the savory department

Yelp
I came here to try the gelato, and I was impressed by how modern, clean, and spacious the store was. The gelato was amazing--I had the strawberry, green tea, and pistachio flavors, and they were all fantastic! I would definitely recommend giving the gelato a try.

Yelp
Very authentic delicious Italian pastries and food. Choice is simply amazing. From cakes, to pastries to mini pastries ( try the passion fruit one, it is an explosion of flavors !) to gelato, caffe', savory bites. There also is a restaurant and bar with plenty of outdoor seating ! Service was very quick and attentive. A truly authentic Italian experience !

Yelp
Just came back from Realmuto. The crostino di caponata (eggplant caponata) was amazing. The maritozzo (a cream pastry from Rome) brings you right back to the heart of Rome. The linguine alle vongole (pasta with clams) was fresh and delicious, with the pasta cooked perfectly, and the pricing was generous and appropriate. The affogato was a delight. I had espresso on coffee gelato! Elegant ambience. Wonderful large space with refined details in design, NY art deco meet Italy. Due to my work, I travel to cities such as Milan, Rome, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and have eaten at some of the best places in those cities, but Realmuto really stands out as one of the finest.

Lisa M.

Yelp
True gem of a new spot in west village. Ambiance feels like you're in an upscale cafe in the middle of Italy. Can sit down for a nice meal or pop in for a coffee and pastry. Some of the best pasta I have had in the city!

Justin W.

Yelp
The Pancakes are out of this world. Omelette was excellent as well. Great atmosphere for a morning breakfast.

Marguerite R.

Yelp
Tried four of their pastries, they were tasteless and the supposed raspberry croissant, was doughy inside with no layers. The apricot tart, was a glorified cookie with apricot jam. The other two cream filled pastries were tasteless. The staff behind the bakery counter were pleasant. I don't know about the savory menu, but avoid the desserts.

K Y.

Yelp
Their desserts are very sweet. Too sweet for my taste. Their prices not cheap. $12 per piece of cake. Average Bombolone texture. There are many better choices in NYC

Phyllis C.

Yelp
Ordered a fruit tart to take out for our anniversary. Just thick, overly sweet syrup with no visible apricot and a dry unde-rbaked-pastry shell. Very disappointing and very expensive for a 1/2 inch inedible tart. Seldom write reviews.

Whitey W.

Yelp
Great pastries and gelato. Hopefully they expand the menu a little and the kitchen finds their stride. Lots of outdoor dining on a wide sidewalk.

Shadi B.

Yelp
Fantastic dinner here. Very authentic! Everything from the food, gelato, and pastries is top notch.
