The Best Restaurants in New Orleans’s Garden District | Eater New Orleans

"This homey, charming cafe recently reopened with its extensive list of eclectic and creative comfort food. While most dishes have an Americana feel (deviled eggs, pimento cheese patty melt), there are international touches here and there, like with the Tuscan white bean stew and sausage bolognese. Salads and sandwiches are always a highlight. For something totally different, check out sister restaurant next door, Rum House, which shares chef Terry Savoie but serves Mexican tropical eats." - Beth D’Addono

Caesars Superdome Promises Major Concession Upgrades for 2024 Season - Eater New Orleans

"Red Dog Diner on Magazine Street reopened earlier this month after being used primarily as a commissary kitchen and storage space for next door restaurant Rum House for the last few years. For now, the casual Southern comfort food spot is open for breakfast and lunch Thursday through Monday, with plans to bring back happy hour and eventually dinner down the road." - Clair Lorell

Where to Find Easter Feasts in New Orleans

"Southern Italian specialties abound at Red Gravy on Magazine Street, including a traditional savory Easter pie called pizza chena for the holiday. It’s made with a yeast crust, and filled with prosciutto, salami, mortadella, coppa, provolone, ricotta, and mozzarella. There’s a sweet Easter egg bread too. There will be live music for Easter brunch with a violin/bass duo from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra." - Beth D'Addono

Google
Cool hip place for breakfast, bunch, lunch, dinner, or just drinks! We sat in the backroom, which was better. We had breakfast since it was still morning. My wife had the "Very Berry Waffle" and she ate the whole thing! Well, except for a small bite that she let me taste, which is why I can honestly say it was scrumptious!! I had their "Tasso Shrimp & Grits," which I enjoyed except for the poach eggs that I ate around. I'm not a fan of the texture of poached eggs. That was my fault! I need to read the menus better. Lol

Gina Muschiano

Google
Great service! And the waitress recommended the Very berry waffle, so I got it. And it was the best!!! Not too sweet, but didn't need the hot blueberry syrup. I did get blueberry butter to put on it, which was amazing! I ate the whole thing!!

Google
I had family in town from Colorado, and I am currently new to the area. We decided to come here and it did not disappoint! Everything was so unique, yet so flavorful and good. Inside the restaurant was cozy and had such intricate designs. Our server had a bunch of tables but worked hard to get us served in a good time. I would definitely recommend the Red Dog for a different diner experience like no other

Good portions. Yummy food! Crab and eggs sardou was delicious, very flavorful. Cute location on Magazine Street, walkable from the trolley. The mimosas are special.

Google
Great Brunch spot. Diner in the front, Bar and dining in the back. Nice atmosphere. Good Bloody Mary's with a salad on top and great food. Go here. Support local businesses!

Google
I arrive with my dog and dine outdoor which is nice they allow dog's including allowing to dine-in if a service dog. They bring in a bowl of water for my dog to drink. The food is delicious with my order being with an appetizer, the main dish, and a dessert. All delicious. The service is great with a really friendly attitude and explaining well on my questions when deciding what to order. The atmosphere is very nice since I ate outdoor and saw around magazine street while seeing other people walking around.

Fantastic local spot/find. The breakfast sandwiches are amazing and all the homemade breads/condiments make the experience truly special.

Google
A friend of mine and I ate at the Red Dog Diner today. We really had a great experience. The service was prompt and super friendly. The atmosphere was great with a restaurant in front and bar to the rear, also serving food. The menu offers both lunch and breakfast and the food was really good. We will definitely return.

Yelp
This place is fairly stupendous! :). I'm not gonna write a huge review because it means I'd have to pause eating this insane food ..

Yelp
The food and service were excellent. I highly recommend the pizza. It hits the spot after a long morning of window shopping.

Yelp
Came here after a workout class and was pleasantly surprised! No wait on a Saturday, but still a good crowd. The back area near the bar was a cool atmosphere. Would recommend the frozen mimosas!! Fun twist on a classic. The food was yummy but the best thing we got was definitely the ahi tuna crisps. Probably would stick to a sandwhich if we came back because the pasta was good but there are better pasta places in the area. Overall pretty good and would come back for brunch/lunch

Yelp
An unassuming casual eatery on Magazine Street, once inside you will find reclaimed wood throughout as a stylistic statement and an inviting atmosphere. They offer delicious sandwiches and pizzas! My roasted turkey club was amazing! It was chock full of roasted turkey in between yummy wheat focaccia, and adorned with gruyere cheese, tomato, red onion, fresh arugula and a dollop of tart cranberry relish. It came with perfectly seasoned crispy fries. Do not miss the boozy Sofia King Good Peachy Tea!

Yelp
A popular spot yet a hole in the wall at the same time. Love the look of this place and how the side alleyway leads to the bar in the back. Decided to stop by after work one day. Bartender was cool and explained some drinks I wasn't familiar with. Got the Jammin Julep, which was so delicious, and the prime rib melt. Man...I honestly didn't expect such good food from this place but the prime rib melt was impressive. Super flavorful and juicy prime rib on a toasty airy bread. Another spot added to my regular rotations, WILL be back to try more of the menu in the near future.

Yelp
This place has some awesome food. Came here on a Sunday, we were seated right away. Our waitress was a bit slower, but we weren't in a rush. I had the Joe Blow with a blueberry pancake. The pancake was my favorite part. The eggs needed a little flavor but nothing salt and pepper couldn't fix. My wife had the crab spaghetti and that was super tasty. The crab was fresh and the flavors were bomb.

Yelp
There are many brunch options in New Orleans. Red Dog Diner is one that should be high on your list to visit (frequently) for a fantastic brunch. Ambiance - very laid back and casual Service - everyone was friendly and service was fast Food - so so fresh and delicious!!! We had the homemade pimento cheese dip, sweet potato pancakes, and the crusted crab and egg sardou. Highly recommend all of these! Drinks - Bloody Mary and Irish Coffee - fantastic brunch drinks! Do yourself a favor - the next time you are looking for a delicious brunch - visit Red Dog Diner - you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Red Dog was one of the first places I ate when moving here, and I was so bummed that it shuttered shortly thereafter. Then, the rumor on Magazine was that they were making a comeback... Well, the day has finally come when people can go back to eat there whenever they'd like. There is a front part to the restaurant, and then the back part which is connected to their back alley bar. It has a cute ambiance, although eating on a heavily humid/high-heat day can be a little taxing as the front is kept open, and the back alley bar is open as well, creating borderline uncomfortable heat. I was seated in the direct path of a large fan, but hot air blowing is still hot. It definitely kept me from staying around longer than I needed to. The service was excellent, and the food was every bit as wonderful as I remembered. I had the pulled pork omelet, and even though it was big enough to (probably) share, I certainly didn't and I had no regrets thereafter. I mean, it was my only meal that day because it left me so full, but such is life. Definitely a great place to go, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality meal that won't break the bank on Magazine St.

Yelp
Super tasty. Good portion sizes. It was a slow weekday and everything went well with service. The staff was friendly and attentive. The space was cozy, and they played good music. The pimento cheese had a little kick and the pickled onion and bread and butter pickles were a good addition to make the snack more interesting. Love pimento cheese but it could be a lot on its own so I appreciate that. I didn't try the salmon but my partner enjoyed. The shrimp and grits with poached eggs was like 2 meals in one. Definitely shareable! It was like an order of eggs Benedict, but instead of the pieces of ham on the Benedict, they gave you another delicious, amazing order of shrimp and grits. I could see how they could be a busy brunch spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! Best grits we've had so far! The beet pizza is SO good. Chad the bartender in the Back Alley Bar is super cool. He was a good sport with our silliness! Great happy hour 3p-7p.
google avatar

Angie W.

Yelp
Really nice staff! She checked on us frequently. It wasn't busy when we went on a Sunday afternoon. I had chicken salad sandwich with the fries. I've never had fries quite like these (in shape). I liked them. Not complaining. Husband had the Reuben. His step-sister had the salmon salad which looked fresh and delicious. She said the salmon was very good. The location is on Magazine street. Not fancy. A bit worn as is common in older New Orleans buildings but otherwise was suitable. Good view of the activity on Magazine. I would go again.

Yelp
I went back here during the Summer and was so happy they reopened after Covid. The restaurant is overall pretty much the same. The wait staff are still super friendly and outgoing and quirky, but the food did not taste as good. I am giving it time though. I think the cocktails are still on point. Overall I still enjoyed myself and love the whole vibe and set up of this place.Very unique an odd back space, with a indoor/outdoor setting? And the wavy bar... I just enjoy the uniqueness of this place.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Service was the best. Crab spinach Benedict is a must. Grits were so creamy.

Yelp
*Reviewing the Yelp! Elite Event* We had a *time*! Wow! I keep thinking back to how good the food was. We were treated to their entire catering and happy hour menu and there were absolutely no misses. But there were, in fact, some standouts. I salivate thinking of the tasso shrimp & grits, the corn and crab fritters, their accompanying butter, the biscuits and jam, the bread pudding, the tamale meatballs. When I say Everything was so yummy, I'm including the cocktails and dessert, too. The staff was lovely. There was so much attention to detail to how all the food was displayed. Everything was perfectly shabby chic and rustic. I find myself thinking of reasons to need catering. But if these offerings said anything, it's that Red Dog is back and better than ever.

Yelp
Hands-down, our new favorite place to get brunch/lunch in NOLA! Food is amazing - you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, but some of our favorites were the Brisket Hash (tender, flavorful, juicy), Crusted Crab & Egg Sardou (crab, spinach, pastry - what more would you want?!?), Country Hammer (sweet and savory), and Banana Pecan Waffle (bourbon syrup puts it over the top!). The place always seems full, but the staff handles it wonderfully - they are available, helpful and always super friendly. Seems like they like working together, and extra shout out to Lauren who handles the kitchen/expediting like a serious pro!! Also the weekend we visited was Jazz Fest and they had really great music playing ;)
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
I've been three times since reopening and it's just not the same. Sent food back twice for being too cold. Manager is more worried about garnishing plates than serving them hot. Thirds time was less than average. Spinach was overdone and dry in the eggs Sardou. I used to love this place and it's just to what it was.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
Excellent. We came on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Hot chocolate and chocolate milk, Very Berry Waffle, and Tasso Shrimp and Grits. The waffle was seriously so good, not too sweet for me. Perfect, really. My husband said the shrimp and grits was also very flavorful. Afterwards we ordered That B*tch Katrina to split. Very cherry forward take on a hurricane. Really good. Staff was friendly, the vibe was laid back. We will definitely return. Edit: Okay, we returned. This time, they didn't carry hot chocolate. The holistic adderall brew was okay, but definitely not worth $7. Husband had the Crusted Crab & Eggs Sardou and said it was really good. I had the Banana Pecan Waffle. It wasn't bad, but I didn't like it nearly as much as the Very Berry Waffle. Here's my gripe: the first time we came, we sat in the front at one of the booths, no complaints. This time we were seated in the back, where they have those horribly uncomfortable metal chairs. You know the ones where anyone with slightly wider hips has two metal bars jammed into their sides? It actually hurts to sit in them. I think we will only come back if we can sit in the front.

Yelp
After being closed since pandemic I was excited to hear that Red Dog Diner was reopening for breakfast and lunch. Had some places to go uptown, so we started off our day there. I got my favorite drink from there "my drinking is only a problem for you" and the Huevos Rancheros. It was just as I remembered it! I was a little nervous when we were seated in a corner that was tucked behind a wall worried that our server would forget about us, but he was amazing and was constantly checking in on us. So glad they're back and I hope the mac and cheese waffle topped with fried quail comes back!
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
This place just opened back up recently and is soooo good! Not your typical brunch but takes it to a whole new level. I had the lump crab Benedict and oh my!!!! Also my friend got the berry waffle and everything from the butter to syrup was delicious. Chad was our bartender and recommended everything we tried and we were NOT disappointed. Definitely will be back and recommending it to everyone. The ambiance was great as well, the space was lit up with lights and just an awesome atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service - quick and attentive! The Reuben was so good and the shoe string fries are one of a kind. It's a great spot in the area!
google avatar

T M.

Yelp
Great food and fun drinks. Loved the decor. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Everyone had a smile and greeted us walking by which is refreshing to see. The deviled eggs were delish. The bolognese was very good. Shrimp and grits did not disappoint.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Long road trip to Colorado afforded me a quick stop in Nawlins'. It was the Monday after Jazz festival so I googled a dog friendly restaurant and was hoping for something just edible...boy did I hit the jackpot! Not only was the staff wonderful...so friendly and patient and knowledgeable, but the food was PERFECT!
google avatar

Waverly H.

Yelp
Yum! Yum! Give me some. This place does not disappoint. Very causal laid back atmosphere. Servers very nice, friendly and attentive. This place pulls them in and I see why. I had the white cheese pizza with arugula and it was so good. The Bloody Mary's are savory and delicious. Breakfast is a must. I have not tried dinner but I will definitely be back. Every thing here is home made. Make it one of your stops when you are in NOLA.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Tried to get breakfast with my daughter (15). First thing I asked for was a cup of hot tea. I was told they don't have hot tea. They have hot water and coffee. How hard would it be to have a box of tea bags to add to that hot water? My daughter and I looked over the menu and it seemed to be geared toward a foodie as opposed to a place with the word "Diner" in their name. We didn't eat. We went down the street to a place with hot tea and a better breakfast selection.
google avatar

Dee m.

Yelp
Excellent place for a NOLA breakfast. Came here two weekends in a row for breakfast great service & great food. We sat in the back area which is a cool area and second time we sat in the front. Both times had the same great waitress. Our breakfast was delicious. I had to start with the My Drinking is only a problem for you drink. Blueberry pancakes were the best! We will return real soon!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Visited their newly renovated location and was pleasantly surprised at how promptly our six top was seated on a weekend. My advice is to go before 11:00 AM because it fills up quickly. Don't be fooled by the small entrance because there's plenty of seating in the back. The service was excellent from the guy who answered the phone to our server and other FOH staff. The food was delicious and reasonably priced especially for such large portions. I'd definitely return to try other dishes.
google avatar

Laurel S.

Yelp
I came here for lunch ... had deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes. Both so good! And then split a cherry bread pudding with my friends. Very tasty! Our waitress was so nice. Lovely place to eat when in the Garden District!
google avatar

Leslie C.

Yelp
Brunch here was great! Really loved the atmosphere, the food, and the sweet people. I enjoyed the strawberry mimosa and the steak wedge salad was scrumptious!
google avatar

Nina O.

Yelp
We were excited to have The Red Dog open again. This is in my top 2 for breakfast. For this visit, we had the crusty crab benedict. Puff pastry topped with creamed spinach, a perfectly poached egg, hollandaise, and sauteed lump crab. This is a must try. We also had the blueberry pancakes that are full of berries, blueberry butter, and syrup cooked to golden brown perfection.
google avatar

Maya M.

Yelp
Let me just say the selection was so plentiful. The food on everything I tasted was divine. It was above and beyond all expectations for a restaurant that has diner in the title. I was not expecting such a large range of selection. It was a decent sized space too perfect for hosting an event. The service was very accommodating and on point. I will definitely be back and recommend without a doubt.
google avatar

Bianca M.

Yelp
Was looking for a brunch place that was open for my Mom's birthday (Monday) and served blueberry pancakes. So here we are, There was no wait and the place was super clean. The staff was inviting and constantly checking on us. The food was okay unfortunately. The pancakes were ok my aunt and felt they lacked flavor. If you like your sausage crisp and seasoned I wouldn't get it. However, I really enjoyed the biscuit, jam, and grits. I knocked off another star as they were out of some items we originally wanted. Great staff, nice environment, but okay food.
google avatar

Walter T.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! While the decor and ambience was underwhelming, the food and service were outstanding. I ordered Ahi Tuna Crisps and when I asked for soy sauce, was told that they did not have it. Two minutes later, a waitperson came over to tell me that the chef used soy sauce in his cooking and that they could bring me some-talk about above and beyond! Shayla our waitperson was attentive and responsive without being overbearing. The chicken Cobb salad was also very good. Our only complaint was that the egg sandwich should be be made with scrambled, not over medium, which while also very good, made it a mess to eat. The shoe string fries were unusual in that they were shaved-almost a cross between fries and onion rings-exceptional! We will definitely be returning to try other items on the menu.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Red Dog finally reopened after a long pause The food is exactly what we remembered We had both the brisket omelette and the patty melt and both were exquisite Ryan our server was exceptional and gave us suggestions of things to do in the area Honestly this was one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Now that they have reopened I was finally able to get in and try it. The food was very good, the original waiter that opened with us spent most of his time talking to other employees ‍. The gal that we asked to take our order was very good. Overall a decent outing. The back bar is kinda cool, and the vibe is decent!
google avatar

Daphne D.

Yelp
Very delicious breakfast, the grits are to die for....and homemade jams...yum...excellent, personable staff!! You won't regret it!! Stop by!!

Lisa T.

Yelp
Very homey bolognese, perfect meat to sauce ratio, it tastes sausage forward which is interesting and the Parmesan tops it all together. Loved it very much, it didn't feel too heavy.
google avatar

Timothy J.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite brunch spots. Good vibes on the weekends that will help you get past your hangover along with the great cocktails they offer. Definitely recommend this place.

Debra L.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Red Dog Diner. The dining area is in the back, so you walk thru the bar and another bar area. In the dining area the atmosphere was nice - music a little edgy for us, but not too loud. The White Pizza with Chicken was really good!!!!! We also ordered an Arugula Salad, and it was so fresh and good, with pine nuts and a good dressing. The server was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Chase A.

Yelp
Well deserved 5 stars. I came here with friends for brunch and everyone enjoyed everything that was ordered. My brisket hash was great. The only thing that would have made it better would have been getting the tomato onion jam with it from the start instead of asking to try after I was almost done. Also, the pancakes. Super fluffy and soft and spongy. Perfect.
google avatar

L S.

Yelp
We adored our breakfast at Red Dog Diner! The service was amazing - just the right balance of charming and kind, attentive and giving us our space. The food? OMG...so good. I dream about the corned beef hash with the rye focaccia to sop up the runny egg yolk. We also got an order of the biscuits with homemade jams. The peach jam on those perfect biscuits was like having pie for breakfast, just heavenly. I enjoyed the "my drinking is only a problem for you" Irish frozen drink. So, yeah, basically, I had pie and a boozy milkshake for breakfast. I can't wait to come back here again. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Visited here for the first time. I'm so happy they re-opened. Great food, friendly staff, nice ambiance.

sarah b.

Yelp
Excellent, second time here and both times everyone was happy. This time came on a Sunday at noon, had to wait twenty minutes. Not bad at all considering it was Sunday. We were given a buzzer so we could shop while waiting. Coffee and Bloody Mary were good. Waffle, wedge salad and eggs sardonic were all good. Expensive but large portions. Highly recommend

Nolan B.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in new orleans Breakfast is always incredible Appetizers are top notch
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
I usually love this place... today I had the biscuits with gravy... the scrambled eggs were fine... the gravy tasted like I was licking a salt lick. I mentioned it to the server and she just took the mostly uneaten plate and brought my check with out even sending a manager... 15.00 for 2 scrambled eggs... I had one bite of the gravy. My husband had the crabmeat egg sardou.. one of the poached eggs was way over cooked.. he doesn't mind that but .... Probably be a long time before I return...

Danielle K.

Yelp
Food and service were amazing! We went during the St Patrick's day parade and they accommodated our whole family. The drinks were great and price was great too!
google avatar

Jeannie K.

Yelp
Amanda is sunshine! I'm big into brunch. The star rating is based on two visits of getting the same crab sardou both times. The first time pre-COVID was mind-blowing amazing, and the second time less so - but take the latter with a grain of salt, as they're doing what they can during this pandemic, sharing a kitchen with the establishment next door. The fact that I'm writing a Yelp review about a dining experience during this time as a whole should be taken with a big, fat boulder of salt, as that in and of itself is a luxury - and anything I find short of stellar is a first-world problem to the nth degree. Anyway, we also got: - Deviled eggs - delicious! - Mac 'n cheese - wouldn't get again - Side sausage - this was a surprise and a great one! Pat yourself for committing to running an extra mile, because it's so worth it! Get it get it get it - That Bitch Katrina - what a name, and what a storm. That's a true Hurricane right there with a hardy pour. Huzza! The homemade pickles sadly aren't available during the pandemic but they're not to be missed whenever available. Red Dog is one of my fav spots, and I hope they make it through the pandemic.
google avatar

Haley P.

Yelp
We came here for the second time last night (first time was pre-COVID and wonderful, delicious), and it was just as tasty this time! Right now for COVID, you order at the counter and then find a table, and they bring your food/drinks, refill waters, etc to you so basically full service other than ordering. Very attentive and items came out quickly. They have a limited menu for both Red Dog items as well as tacos from neighboring Rum House-serving both from within and on the outside patio seating just at Red Dog. We started with a half gallon of sangria-tasty and fresh, deceivingly strong and sneaks up on you! Also got a nice big Caesar salad (standard, good, little heavy on the dressing which I Luke but not my husband's favorite), and chips and salsa-very tasty with just a hint of spice. For dinner we got the shrimp and pancetta spaghetti (good, with a TON of shrimp, sauce was a touch thin for my liking) and the brisket melt with fries (holy moly that was so rich, cheesy, and amazing!) And finally, topped off the night with a big oatmeal raisin cookie (super soft) and the "My drinking is only a problem for you" Irish coffees (they're usually frozen and weren't this time so that was a little disappointing, but still just as delicious!)

Karon a.

Yelp
Delicious, food and an entertaining menu. Prime rib sandwich with Ajou sauce and grilled shrimp. Salad were amazing.

Yelp
Back bar is fabulous! Yummy drinks, good vibe, great service and food menu sounds delicious
