"Built in 1848, Regent Street Cinema was the first in the country to show moving pictures. In 1896, the cinema showcased the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe to a paying audience, and, as the curtain fell, British cinema was born. Re-opened by the University of Westminster in May 2015, reinstating one of the most historic cinemas in Britain to its former grandeur. The cinema offers exclusive premieres, repertory screenings, retrospectives, documentaries, animation and experimental cinema. You can also catch double bills, showcasing the best of home-grown British talent, world cinema and classic movies in this classic venue." - UsVs

Regent Street is a must in terms of the history of the city as the cinema featured the first motion picture shown in the United Kingdom. Highly recommend you going just to see it, really feels like stepping back in time, they have a great selection of independent films and they play old movies as well, this however, doesn’t mean you won’t find the classic studio films. It’s a great place right in the heart of central. You have a variety of drink options both alcohol and alcohol free. They don’t do fresh popcorn unfortunately

One of if not the oldest cinema in London! Often frequented by celebrities as this cinema is a little hush hush. Great staff, comfortable seating and not that many rude people on their phones the whole way through! Actually more people who want to watch what’s on the big screen rather than their little screen. Great membership offers too!

The easy to find location and nice staff are the only positives of this cinema. The chairs have not been angled correctly so if anyone is sitting in front of you I partly blocks the screen - particularly frustrating as there were subtitles to read!! They are also quite high up making it feel more like a theatre and gave a weird cinematic experience where you’re constantly looking downwards. Chairs are on the smaller side which is just an observation rather than complaint. Those of larger builds may not fit/find it very comfy (woman’s UK20 and the arms dug in a little but was okay)

Very impressed with this cinema. Beautiful Grade II listed building and so ornate inside. The rows ascend very steeply so no chance of a big head in front of you. Comfortable seats, good sound quality, but best of all a licensed bar and cheap matinee tickets. Unfortunately there were 2 ladies looking at their phones throughout the film. Before film starts no reminder to turn off phones so perhaps that’s why.

This cinema was the first to show moving footage in the UK and has thoughtfully restored to retain this former glory. The theatre design gives great views from almost all the seats. Tickets are super affordable. Soft and alcoholic drinks on offer. Really impressed.

My favourite cinema in London, by far! I can only say good things about it: the staff is incredibly friendly, drinks and snack options 10/10, the screening room is truly beautiful, and the membership is worth it! Only found it 6 months ago (wish I had sooner!) when looking for a place to see Priscilla. 13 more films and a membership later, I’m loving it! ✨ I’ve converted my boyfriend to more artsy films (bless him) like La Bête and a few of my friends too. I love that we can also see blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine or The Fall Guy. As much as I want this cinema to stay a hidden gem, they deserve more recognition as an independent cinema! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love this place - went for the first time to see the midnight screening of the Doctor Who series finale. The Doctor Who themed cocktails were fun and the staff a laugh to chat to. Best thing, comfortable seating!

This is a great venue and cinema located in the heart of central London on Regent Street. We came to see the National Theatre screening of Fleabag. Booked online and was great experience. The staff were very friendly, the seats were very comfortable, and the screen great too! I wish I had known the seating was so vertical (?) as I would have booked closer but still great viewing! They also have drinks, cocktails, beers, and snacks available. I would definitely visit again and highly recommend. Follow me on Google Maps for more reviews
