On the Grid : Regent Street Cinema

"Built in 1848, Regent Street Cinema was the first in the country to show moving pictures. In 1896, the cinema showcased the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe to a paying audience, and, as the curtain fell, British cinema was born. Re-opened by the University of Westminster in May 2015, reinstating one of the most historic cinemas in Britain to its former grandeur. The cinema offers exclusive premieres, repertory screenings, retrospectives, documentaries, animation and experimental cinema. You can also catch double bills, showcasing the best of home-grown British talent, world cinema and classic movies in this classic venue." - UsVs

My first visit to this cinema and I was highly impressed. I attended the Italian film series promoted by the film magazine Little White Lies. The Regents street cinema is the oldest in London it still has a working organ and on my visit it was played before the film. The seating is very comfortable and has excellent site lines. I will definitely be making another visit in the near future

Fantastic small cinema near Oxford Circus. Has the best bar I have ever seen in a cinema and comfortable seats. A joy.

Regent Street is a must in terms of the history of the city as the cinema featured the first motion picture shown in the United Kingdom. Highly recommend you going just to see it, really feels like stepping back in time, they have a great selection of independent films and they play old movies as well, this however, doesn’t mean you won’t find the classic studio films. It’s a great place right in the heart of central. You have a variety of drink options both alcohol and alcohol free. They don’t do fresh popcorn unfortunately

probably my favorite spot to catch a film in london, especially one of their unique screenings for older films! amazing staff, comfortable seats and affordable tickets for the monday-tuesday crowds specifically.

Google
one of my favourite cinemas in london! a historic building where british cinema began, showing films new & old. it's at a convenient location & has a premium atmosphere that you don't get much in regular cinemas.

One of if not the oldest cinema in London! Often frequented by celebrities as this cinema is a little hush hush. Great staff, comfortable seating and not that many rude people on their phones the whole way through! Actually more people who want to watch what’s on the big screen rather than their little screen. Great membership offers too!

One screen, one film showing, beautiful antique interior with a contemporary bar. They offer £6 tickets on Mondays and Tuesdays which is a great deal for central London. Marked down because the legroom isn't too good if you're a taller person. Additionally, I found the sound quality and volume in the upper rows to be worse than if you'd sat towards the front/middle - I'd recommend booking those instead.

They sell popcorn or some other snacks in extremely crispy packaging. A great score was ruined by additional sound effects. We even had to move to different seats to watch the film in peace. It wasn't a cheesy comedy, it was a political thriller. Don't think I will come back to watch anything else.
