The Best New Brunches in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"What started with a restaurant looking to bring Peru to the Plateau has accomplished its mission and then some: Since September 2021, Barranco’s chefs, Daniel Silva and Michelangelo Miceli, have teamed up with Le Passé Composé’s Arnaud Glay to serve a menu of dishes like tartines with calamari, burgers topped with panko-crusted mahi-mahi, and saucy eggs Benedict served with sautéed octopus and squid." - JP Karwacki, Valerie Silva

The Best Restaurants of Montreal’s Plateau - Eater Montreal

"Named after a cool, colourful seaside neighbourhood in Lima, this St-Denis newcomer dishes causas (mashed potato terrines filled with ingredients like avocado, grilled octopus, shrimp, and more); pollo a la brasa, the nation’s famous crispy-skinned roast chicken; chicharrón (succulent fried pork) in taco and sandwich form; and a whole gamut of mahi-mahi ceviche. Its weekend brunch is also worth checking out." - Joel Balsam, Valerie Silva, Eater Staff

The Best Takeout and Delivery to Try in Montreal Right Now - Eater Montreal

"Since travel to Lima (and everywhere else) seems fraught right now, Barranco’s newly released Peruvian menu showcases meaty Peruvian-style sandwiches and platters with chorizo, steak, and pork. The side dishes are a carb-lover’s dream, featuring causas — a layered potato casserole— choclo (large-kernelled South American corn) slathered with cheese and mayo or in a veggie-rich mashup, and Peruvian fried potatoes (yellow or sweet) and yucca." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

14 Brand-New Montreal Terrasses to Check Out This Summer

"Named after the bohemian, graffiti-splattered neighbourhood in Lima that’s reminiscent of the Plateau, Barranco does Peruvian street food like ceviche, leche de tigre (the ceviche juice on its own), and chicharron sandwiches. Wow!!!! I am so glad that this was our last dinner in Montreal because we would have compared every other to it and would have been disappointed. It was absolutely nothing short of AMAZING! The drinks....best we had the entire time here.....the service was completely on point, friendly, efficient, and the place was busy. We started with sharing Solterito and it was so fresh, well-balanced, and light. My daughter got the ceviche rocoto and I got the anticucho de Pollo....both ridiculously flavorful. I wish I could have ordered one of everything on that menu...seriously. We shared the passion fruit cheesecake and it was perfect. I do not have a single bad thing to say. If you have the chance...go! I absolutely promise you will not be disappointed.

This place came highly recommended from our friends, and it did not dissapoint. We arrived around 6 for a very late lunch, with a very tired toddler. We were immediately seated at a very busy but lovely patio, and server was amazing. We got a bunch of stuff to try as well as their local own beer. I also requested for two simple fried eggs for my son, and they were so sweet to accomodate my request at a minimal cost. Highly recommend, for both family affairs as well as date nights!

Absolutely loved this place! The drinks were delicious and perfectly balanced. The food was just as impressive—especially the Jarey D’Agnon, which was full of flavor and beautifully presented. The team was incredibly friendly and professional, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Price-wise, everything felt reasonable and made sense for the quality. Highly recommend for anyone craving authentic Peruvian cuisine in Montreal!

Google
We had a great experience here. Some truly outstanding dishes - the ceviche was so fresh and flavorful! Also really enjoyed seafood rice and dessert. The fried chicken was forgettable and the sausage was a little too salty. Cocktails were fun and ambiance is great at night albeit a bit dim.

We had a great time. The place is super cute, good music, good vibes. Was packed! The food was fresh and flavourful. Will definitely go back.

GO GO GO PERFECT FOR SUMMER!! It’s so fresh and DELICIOUS!!! We’re obsessed The staff is super nice and extra cause most of them speak spanish Latin approved Can’t wait to go back to try everything else Got the chance to sit at the terrasse and it just made up for a perfect family lunch Craving ceviche every time the weather hits hard The drinks were also really good

Google
The food here was fresh and flavourful. The music inside can be a bit loud, so it's not ideal for a quiet date night, but it's great for a night out with friends. They also have a terrace (covered) that offers a nice option if you want a more quiet setting. Great spot. I definitely recommend it!

Google
Great spot in Montreal for food! We got tacos, octopus, and civeche. We found there were too many potatoes with the octopus and too much lime in the Ceviche. Tacos were great, drinks were great. Dessert was also amazing.

Yelp
Delicious Spanish food with a modern twist. The plates were super flavorful and the presentation was beautiful. The service was quick and friendly and the restaurant is really well decorated.

Yelp
This was a nice find and an enjoyable dinner experience. They take reservations online, but we happened to be walking by and made one for later in the day. All reservations, unless you specifically request it, will be for inside, but we got a table in front so we were as close to the outside as possible. The drinks here are festive, and some of the mocktails are actually presented better than the cocktails. It's more small plates here than entrees, but those included most of the traditional options. This included ceviche, but the majority of those options were for mahi mahi. We opted for primarily meat and seafood options, and our server let us know how long each would take (some take a while to prepare) so that we knew when specific items would come out. The plate that amazed us the most was the shrimp atop a cake of potato and avocado - who know a potato/avocado cake would work? (answer: we do now). Service was great. The food came out at the expected times, and we were checked on frequently.

Yelp
A refaire!

Yelp
Happened upon here while wandering around Montréal. I went at 6:30pm and sat at the bar. The service was great, super attentive. I order the Causa de Pulpo and Anticuchos. The Causa was very good, it was refreshing , tangy , soft and slightly crunchy. The anticuchos were super tender and the aji amarilo sauce gave a great kick. The ambiance was casual, a mix of small tables and larger groups. Some looked like they came straight from work. The menu was good, though I wish they had pollo a la brassa. I would come back again with a bigger group to try more things.

Yelp
Great food! Highly recommend a visit for yummy Peruvian eats. We came here for brunch on a Friday and there was lots of seating available indoors. We ordered a variety of dishes to share so we were able to try different items on the menu! Really enjoyed all of them but a standout was the Mahi Mahi sandwich. If this is on the menu when you are there then you should definitely give it a try! The interior had ample seating and great decor. There is also an outdoor patio on the street if you want to be outdoors. Service was helpful and friendly. I'm looking forward to coming back already!

Yelp
Back a third time and looks like they've rearranged the whole layout since the last time I've been in December 2022. They built a bar along the back right wall and introduced a bunch of booth seats. We went on a Friday night and there was a DJ mixing music at one corner of the bar. They changed all the wall mural art too. All of us had been previously so we went straight to the favorites. You cannot go wrong with the classic and Barranco ceviches. They're consistently fresh each time I've had them. A new dish we had was the Salchipapa La Poderosa. It was a perfect hot side to go with the ceviches. My friends asked for a small rocotto caretillero spicy sauce and the mild flavorful heat literally goes with every dish. Chilled chicha morada can be served with or without ice although it is served in a smaller glass so you get the same amount of juice. Music was just a touch loud but otherwise everything is great.

Yelp
Loved this place! The food was excellent and there are plenty of options for vegetarians and meat eaters. They fry the vegetarian items in the potato fryer so that's a plus. The drinks were awesome and the servers were friendly and fun. The place is super cute for photos. Conclusion: what are you waiting for? Go eat there today!

Yelp
Had a wonderful meal at Barranco MTL. First time experiencing Peruvian cuisine and it was absolutely delicious!! Wonderful combination of flavors. The seafood was fresh and amazing. We love ceviche and the 2 we tried were wonderful. And the craft cocktails were crazy good. The bartenders here really know how to pull together great flavors.

Yelp
Finally got to try this restaurant. It lived up to the good reviews. If you want a reservation before 9pm you have to plan ahead a couple of weeks. The service was great, the food was delicious, flavorful, fresh and innovative. I started with a cocktail Jasmine, then had the Pulpo appetizer, the Barranco Ceviche and a drink for dessert. The ceviche was one of the best i have had in a while. The portion size was perfect. The waiter was nice, attentive, service was great, nice ambiance. Will definitely return.

Yelp
I don't know where to start with this review. Honestly I was expecting alot from this place. Because ppl were saying it was so good and it was on my list to try but I was so disappointed. We went on a Saturday at around 930. The place was very nice, nice decor, amazing bar. We were seated near the door and people weren't taking consideration when opening the door not caring about the cold coming inside, I would definitely to seat at the bar next time especially in winter time. Obviously this is not the restaurants fault They have a big selection of drinks and the cocktails looked amazing which I loved, they looked all so yummy. We got the Barranco and Aloha, both of them came in like a nice looking cups and I loved how they took the time to do the cocktails. My 2 stars are for the drinks. For food we got Solterito to start, it was refreshing but was lacking flavor I find. We also got the salchipapa la brava and chaufita con chicharron. These 2 plates were average not anything wow. The rice for the chaufita was good but the pork had alot of fat in it. We were very disappointed, I dunno if we made the wrong decision to get those dishes instead of others. We wished that maybe we would have chosen a seafood dish instead. For dessert we wanted the alfajores but they had none left and we didn't really want to try anything else honestly. Service was nothing spectacular, the only time the waitress came to see us was to get our drink and food order, other then that she never asked us how the food was, so service was pretty much non-existent. They also have a live dj, and he was playing very good music which we loved. Will I came back? I don't know honestly. I will come back for the cocktails because I would want to try more of them. But for the food I don't know.

Yelp
Came here for brunch when I visited Montreal in August. We were just in the area shopping and I noticed this restaurant being very lively and busy. The server was very helpful with giving us suggestions as I'm not too familiar with Peruvian food. The food was absolutely amazing! It was by far one of the top 3 restaurants that we tried on our visit. Everything was really good especially the ceviche. I will definitely be back on my next visit to Montreal!

Yelp
We visited Barranco for their New Year's Eve dining menu. On the whole, the food was good, but it did not make up for the service, which was subpar. We were originally reserved to be sat at the bar, and the hostess called to ask if we would be alright to be sat at a table instead, to which we said yes. When we arrived, we were sat at a table right by the window, where a draft was coming through. When asked to be moved to a table away from the window or even to return to our bar seating, we were denied, but noticed that another couple of diners who were originally sat near the window as well were relocated to the interior. Other diners who were made to sit by the window also asked to be moved, and all that was offered to them was assurance that the heating was being raised, and that we wouldn't notice that it was cold once we started eating. Many of us kept our winter coats on as we ate. I would not be against returning to this restaurant if someone requested to go, but I would ensure that we would be seated away from the window in colder months.

Yelp
We got here on a Friday night and 6pm and it filled in after us. The food was A+. My niece doesn't eat fish or beef so I was very worried that the experience would be meh but it was food was amazing. I wish I had room for more because the ceviche dishes looked to die for! The ambiance was outstanding. Such a fun crowd with a DJ! Very hip!

Yelp
Loved the ceviche available there. Along with good food and drinks, there was Peruvian music playing which enhanced me & my friends' experience there. Service was a bit slow when we ordered meat but that aside, I would gladly recommend the place.

Yelp

Yelp
Cool, interesting, good service I would come back here, and I might decide to give it a 5 star review if I've sampled it more, just couldn't say for sure from the one visit I liked their fancy cocktails, and tasty tapas This is a cool restaurant, worth going with someone to impress them

Yelp
My first Peruvian restaurant. Interesting discovery. The octopus skewer is by far the best dish. The meat is so tender. The texture is soft and melts in your mouth like pork belly. The sauce was a bit salty but with the potato it was ok. The ceviche is tangy best to share. The crispy corn added a nice texture contrast. I wish the Peruvian corneas sweeter. The tanginess does become over powering at the end, and we did share the dish... The seafood rice, tasted like a cross between a paella and risotto. Nice flavor and well seasoned, safe bet if you don't know what to order. Lastly we had the salchipapas. Sausage with potatoes and cassava. The huacatay mayo is a real discovery, fragrant and balanced well with the slightly too salty meat. Overall I would go back for more huacatay sauce and the octopus, yummy.

Yelp
We'd never been to a Peruvian restaurant before so we were excited to try this. There's a great atmosphere in the restaurant with a lot of decoration. The waitress was friendly and the service was about average. We ordered the Chilcano La Peach to drink and it tasted great and was stronger than we expected. For an appetizer we got Anticucho Classique and loved the seasoning on the veal, it was delicious. Despite enjoying it so much, there's no way two little skewers and a couple potatoes are worth $16. We ordered the Arroz con Mariscos since we loved seafood and it did not disappoint. All the seafood was very fresh and cooked perfectly. This dish was amazing and we enjoyed every bite. Our other entree was Salchipapa La Asada and that was great as well. The potatoes really exceeded my expectations and were crisp and delicious. The chicken and huacatay mayo were very tasty and this dish had a lot of flavour. We had a great experience, loved the food, and would consider eating here again. However, the service was a bit too slow and the prices were too high for the portion sizes for me to give this five stars.

Yelp
food is soooo good ! the ceviche is a must order. service is also spectacular. best first meal here in montréal.

Yelp
Delicious food, very pleasant to eat outside on a beautiful summer day. Welcoming and attentive staff. And once you are done with the food that gives you an explosion of new and unusually enjoyable taste, have a dessert. These cookies.... What can make a perfectly good sugar cookie even better? Dulce de lèche. Try it with cappuccino and enjoy.

Yelp
We had a great time last night at Barranco. Thanks to Facundo for the great service. I love Peruvian cuisine. It is the best in Latin America by a long shot. And I love Peruvian restaurants. Some are elegant. Some are traditional. Barranco is "urban" with tapas-size plates as well as full entradas. We had anticuchos de pulpo skewers with grilled octopus and potatoes with a lovely spicy sauce, outstanding ceviche Peruvian style (Peru is the originator of ceviche), and arroz con mariscos. She had a mixed drink with mescal (definitely not Peruvian). I had chicha morada without alcohol. (Chicha morada, made from purple corn, is to Peru what iced tea is to the Southern US). Loud but not too loud. Nice music. Give Barranco a try.
google avatar

Yasmin A.

Yelp
What a great find in Montreal! The vibe of this restaurant was nice and lively and they had nice art on the walls reminiscent of Barranco in Peru. The music was also great. Their drink menu was amazing and had so many good options. I wanted to try so many. The food options ranged from your classic lomo saltado to leche de tiger. The ceviches were all good and the octopus, beef and heart anticuchos were also amazing. There are a few vegetarian options as well. The service was good and our waitress was patient in explaining dishes to us and giving us suggestions. The dishes are all nice to share so everyone care try a bit of everything. We were a group of 4 and ordered about 5 different dishes. The location of the restaurant is very central and there are lots of shops to explore around there as well.

Yelp
Have an EGGSquisite day with @barrancomtl ---- BARRANCO (Montreal, QC) Munchie Mandates: - Everything here is so colourful, bright, and refreshing; a true feast for the eyes and the palate - Highly recommend any of the ceviche dishes, as you'll be guaranteed a mouthful of juicy flavours
google avatar

Eugene W.

Yelp
Ceviche Barranco ($21): Great ceviche. Fish tasted fresh and everything was well-balanced. Jalea Mixta ($21): Not really worth it. Just a bunch of fried seafood. Salchipapa La Poderosa ($18): Tasty dish. The potatoes are crisped up nicely and the sausage is a nice addition. Is it worth it? I wouldn't say it's super value, as the ingredients are quite cheap. It does TASTE good, though A little overpriced. Their ceviche is good. The other stuff is also good, but not a great deal.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
RAVING ABOUT THIS PLACE!! Everything was soooo delicious. For appetizer we ordered the Barranco Ceviche and it was just beyond delicious. Perfect lemony flavor with fresh seafood. 10/10 so good! Entree Paella Risotto - So so good! The risotto was creamy and delicious and the seafood was so fresh! 10/10 Lomo Soltado - Beyond delicious ! Can never go wrong with meat and potatoes and the flavors were the best 10/10 For drinks Ginger drink - I'm not a very big drinker, but this drink was so good. It had the perfect amount of ginger to hide the taste of the alcohol. Pisco Sour - A little on the sour side hence the name! But really yummy. Dessert Tres Leche - Amazing! Enough said
google avatar

Ricky Boby L.

Yelp
Great ceviche, great portions with lots of fish in the ceviche. Never had peruvian food and this place got me intrigued with their nice flavors. The salchipapa was interesting as well, kinda like a brunch item with some fried pork bits ,huge duck egg and fried potatoes. Was good. The triple skewers was good too, interesting sauve, but i didn't find it worth it, 20 something dollars for 3 skewers I will try their drinks next time and other items. The ceviche is worth it.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
There are not very many places that can make an impressive anticucho. This is one of the few! The meat is juicy when it comes out and the aji amarillo is at just the right amount of spiciness to complement the tender meat. I would come back here just of them. We also ordered the arroz de marisco with the beset amount of creamy rice and seafood you'll find just about no where. The drinks are carefully crafted and a delight. The venue, the outdoor seating, the food, the drinks, and the music is all in great synergy. This is the place for a romantic date night.

Yelp
Was the first time I ate in this peruvian restaurant as they are there only since a couple of years. I always think Solymar was the best peruvian restaurant in Montreal but now this contender won the match. The portions are smaller but are 13 or 15$ a plate you can order 2 plates an enjoy a different combo. And the ceviche are absolutely sublime, they are offering 4 kind of ceviches: Barranco (squid, white fish, shrimp, onion, corn, coriander), classico ( add potatoes), Ala Wong( add plantain) and Rocoto ( with hot sauce). I tried the barranco ceviche and wasn't disappointed, everything was fresh and taste good. My wife had the causa and it was delicious too and she knows what's good she's a peruvian born Canadian! That's the place to go if you like Peruvian cuisine !

Yelp
Overall: Meh! Was looking to go to this place for a while but was disappointed when went. Ordered Salchipapa La Brava-- it was mostly potatoes and Yucca, very little meat. Super greasy too. Left less than satisfied.

Yelp
Amazing food service and ambiance Amazing food service and ambiance Best ceviche dish ever
google avatar

Bee C.

Yelp
Honestly, I know giving 5 stars seems a little dramatic but I don't care. Every single bite we had tonight was beyond delicious. Probably one of the best ceviches I've ever had and such a fun atmosphere with the Dj but not the place to go if you're looking for a quiet meal out. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Enrique G.

Yelp
Sorry guys but starting with the hostess, who is "complicated", followed by slow and confused service and very beautifully prepared food which all seems the same just different names, turns to be a regular experience overall.
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
Beautiful drinks; tasty tapas & a cool vibe make this a great Peruvian spot! Dinner w/ friends; loved the salterito (hearts of palm salad), ceviche & chicharron & pio pio (aka chicken) taquitos. We sat inside but they do have tables outside; Would definitely return!
google avatar

Tamara H.

Yelp
Excellent Peruvian eatery. I've only been once and sat on the terrace but if this resto was closer to me, I'd visit more often. Really flavourful and unique. I especially liked the shrimp causa and classic ceviche. A little on the pricey side but for me, you can't fake authenticity and quality so this place is worth it. Service was great too :)
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Fun place to eat. Interesting menu. Great cocktails. Our waiter was attentive and informative.
google avatar

Eva W.

Yelp
This was by far the best meal my friends and I had during our time in Montreal. The ceviche was so flavorful and also had wonderful texture from the hominy and crunchy texture of fried nuts. We also loved the salchipapa--we got the pepper and cheese one--and the taquitos were a hefty portion and so delicious. My steak was AMAZING, one of the best I've ever had, with the crispiest potatoes and flavor-packed sauce. The drinks were also absolutely amazing, so creative and fun (get the barranco, it tasted amazing and almondy and also got lit on fire!), and the service and ambience were perfect. We didn't want to leave, and I need to come back to Montreal if only to go here again.
google avatar

Rosalba G.

Yelp
Excellent cocktails, original food , servings look wonderful. Staff is attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Best "Pisco Sour" Ever, food is excellent, pricey but trendy atmosphere , won't regret.

Narendgie M.

Yelp
I always thought Solymar was the only peruvian restaurant worth the trip to. Although Solymar holds a big place in my heart, Barranco just won fair square. Their cocktails are by far the best cocktail I ever had. You can taste all the flavours and it's amazing. I'm at loss of words to explain how good it was, you just have to try it. I really enjoyed my time there, the food was exquisite. It was my first time trying octopus and I'm glad it was at barranco. Because one first bad experience could've ruined my perception of that meal that I was always skeptic about. Enough talking now! Let me just show you the pictures.

Cory H.

Yelp
The food at Barranco was decent and a nice twist on a tapas menu especially the chicken amd beef skewers. That being said the service was atrocious. It took 15 min before someone came around to ask if anyone had taken our drink orders then another 30 min for our drinks to come and no one came to take our food orders in the meantime. I would not go back. I am sure there are better tapas restaurants in Montreal. Not special enough even with the Peruvian twist.
google avatar

Gabrielle M.

Yelp
Amazing food, vibe, spot, people. Every dish was creative, well prepared. Spot was full but not loud, staff was friendly and attentive and the food...did I mention the food? Every dish was excellent--and tbh we are a tough crowd.

Melissa D.

Yelp
We came here for drinks and they were delicious! They have a ton of fruity, unique drinks that were really nice. I had the Chilcano Fresa and the Jasmine. Both really nice drinks. It was crazy because the Jasmine came with the glass turned upside down with same burning rosemary beneath it. The smoke in the glass mixed with the fruitiness of the drink was actually really nice. I appreciate the fancy drinks and the lovely staff. I would like to return to try the food.

Yelp
Really nice Portuguese restaurant. Great staff and nice assortment of Portuguese fare. A reasonable price for right sized portions. All dishes prepared as if genuine Portuguese chefs are in the kitchen. Very pleasant.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been so excited to try a new restaurants my expectations for Barranco were already very high! Luckily, besides a few kinks in service, the experience from start to end, was one I'd definitely do again! Firstly, I can't say enough good things about the food. Everything was well executed, flavourful, and beautifully presented; all the dishes, with their mix of tangy, sweet, and spicy, and the different textures, were just plain delicious! Order up a few plates to share, tapas style, and sont forget to save room for dessert cause it was well worth it as well. Too bad they ran out of their lukuma cheesecake but that only means I'll have to go back for it I also enjoyed the laidback ambiance, and although simply decorated, with green plants and artistic murals, the restaurant evoked that South American charm.. We were there on a Saturday night and the place was booming , so make sure to reserve!

Yelp
This place is by far one of the best peruvian restaurants that i've been too. The service is is amazing. This place is so amazing that I stayed 12 hours yesterday. I had brunch, then had a few cocktails, then later I had the regular menu. All of a sudden I knew someone at the bar, he asked me if i wanted a beer so I said sure. I was going to leave, then decided to stay since there was another drink infront of me. Never seen such great staff who work extremely well together. There is no way you will only go once to this place .

Yelp
Excellent food. The ceviche are very big and so tasty. The drinks are amazing and they don't skimp on the alcohol which is so nice. The service is good. I've been twice this summer and I will come back for more. Excellent value.

Yelp
Their Pisco Sour is something special! Food was excellent as well, loved the pork belly tacos in particular.
