The 31 Best Places To Eat & Stay In Sydney - The Infatuation

"Restaurant Hubert opened in Sydney in 2016, but it feels like it’s been there for much longer. Make your way down a set of stairs into this underground cavern and you’ll think you’re in a mansion hidden somewhere in Europe. The space is split into a cocktail bar and dining room, where you’ll eat comforting French food like steak tartare with fries, chicken fricassee, and crème caramel. It’s hard not to love this one." - Caroline Clements 33

"Chef Dan Papperell gives classic French food a modern twist at Hubert, where snails are served with the house XO sauce, duck parfait comes with maple syrup jelly, and a side of gratin is mixed with kimchi. Dinner and lunch is available à la carte or, if you have a minimum of four-people, family-style. It's best to come with a group and order the large, shareable plates like whole chicken with green garlic. Dinner reservations are available for six or more only, otherwise it’s first come, first served; any size group can reserve a table for lunch." - Sophie Davies

Amazing. Food was amazing — we had the escargots, tartare, prawn toast, oysters and steak — all amazing. Service was also excellent, they filled our water every time they walked past and always readily helped us if we needed something. Prices are definitely on the higher side so be prepared to spend money, but the service and food make it so worth it. The jazz music is such a good kick to the evening too. Would definitely come again!

Had a truly French night at Hubert! Every dish was impressive—especially the duck, steak, and escargot. The meat was tender, juicy, and full of flavour. What truly elevated the whole experience was the impeccable table service and the enchanting live band, whose beautiful songs created the perfect ambiance. A divine dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommended!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Hubert! The atmosphere was truly magical — I was hoping for a romantic vibe with dim lighting, and it exceeded all expectations. The live jazz music added so much charm and made the evening feel even more special. As for the food — everything was exceptional. I had the steak, and it simply melted in my mouth. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and said it was the best he’s ever had — incredibly juicy and full of flavor. We also shared the tartare and the chocolate dessert. I hesitated about the dessert at first, but I’m so glad we got it — it was light, delicious, and just melted in the mouth. Highly recommend this place, but make sure to book a table a few days in advance!

The food, the staff and the vibes were immaculate. I’m allergic to dairy and eggs and they couldn’t have been more accommodating and willing to adapt items more. They have a live jazz band playing and the whole atmosphere of the restaurant was just stunning. I couldn’t recommend this place enough. Definitely a bit more on the pricey side but 100% worth it, perfect for a special occasion or celebration.

Dining at Restaurant Hubert in Sydney was an experience I won’t forget. From the moment we descended the stairs into the moody, vintage dining room, it felt like stepping into 1940s Paris. The atmosphere was truly special, made even better by the live jazz show playing during lunch — an unexpected and charming surprise that added warmth and energy to our meal. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The duck parfait with maple syrup jelly was a standout starter — silky smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. It paired beautifully with the crusty bread and was one of the best versions I’ve ever had. One dish you simply must try is the cheese soufflé. Light, fluffy, and bursting with cheesy goodness, it’s the kind of dish you’ll think about long after the meal ends. It’s comforting yet refined — a perfect reflection of the style and care Hubert puts into their menu. Service was impeccable throughout, with knowledgeable and attentive staff who were happy to offer suggestions and keep the vibe relaxed but elegant. Whether you’re celebrating something special or just want a unique lunch in Sydney, Hubert delivers on every front.

Restaurant Hubert offers a beautiful and unique atmosphere that feels both elegant and relaxed. The vibe is incredibly chill, making it a perfect spot for a special night out. The food is delicious with well-balanced portions, and the overall value for money is excellent. It’s a popular place, so booking in advance is a must. Highly recommended for a memorable dining experience!

Wow, wow, wow! Where do I even begin with how much I love this place! Iv come here with my husband a few times and without fail every single time I’m absolutely astonished with the impeccable service and food here at Hubert. First of all the food is incredible, each flavour, texture and spice is perfectly put together to create the most amazing burst of flavours. Then the service, each and every staff member on each occasion even the lovely people I spoke to on the phone were incredibly professional, kind and accommodating. My husband and I have had the pleasure of jay jay attending to us our past visits and each and every time he has been incredibly accommodating, really makes us feel comfortable and overall he made the experience at Hubert one to remember. Thanks team, can’t wait to be back! (Ps please bring back the corn sorbet) 🙏

Google
I’d heard so many great things about Hubert, so I came in with high expectations - and in terms of atmosphere, it definitely delivered. The vibe is warm and inviting, with a charming vintage feel, and the live performance added a special touch to the experience. The service was also excellent - staff were incredibly attentive and welcoming from start to finish. As for the food, it was good but didn’t quite blow me away. It was enjoyable, but not something I’d personally come back for. That said, I’d still recommend visiting at least once for the overall experience. The ambiance and service really make it a memorable night out. Follow @casualmunchers for more food reviews 🫶🏻

Yelp
A couple of my friends recently returned from Sydney, and they said if there was only one place they suggest I go to eat - it was Restaurant Hubert. Specifically the happy hour. So I did! They don't take reservations for their 5-6pm happy hour. You can only line up at 5pm when they open. We got there right before 5pm, and there were probably 10 to 12 people in line. Once the doors opened we were led downstairs to the bar area. It's a very dark, and feels like you've been transported to another time and place. We decided to try one of each of the food items on the happy hour: - Duck Parfait - Good. Classic French item and they do it well. - Brandade d'anguilles fumée - OK. I know it's eel, but wasn't very distinct from any other fish. My least favourite dish. - Saucisson Sec - Good. Simple. - Fleur de Courgette - Very good. Delicate and delicious. I should've ordered two of these. - Normandy Burger - Very good. The one item my friends raved about, and it was clear why. A burger with the best ingredients is hard to matched. I got the extra side of fries which is equally good. Best dish of the meal. Service was relatively good, except at one point they asked if I wanted mayo for my fries (very French) and I said yes, but it never came. Other than that, quite good. This was easily my favourite meal of my trip, holding up to high expectations. I would return on my next trip to Sydney.

Yelp
I have dreams of Restaurant Hubert's Chicken Fricassée. Note: Happy Hour is walk-in only from 5PM - 6PM. We came on a Thursday evening and there was a line inside prior to opening. I highly recommend getting here early to get a seat during Happy Hour and stay after to enjoy some live jazz after 6PM. The restaurant was easy to locate with a sign upfront. The entrance is just a door in the wall with spiraling stairs leading you to an underground jazz bar and restaurant. It's upscale and romantic, but several other people were dressed casually. We sat on a shared table with three other strangers until we ordered off the full menu and our Chicken Fricassée arrived. The service is top notch and everyone was attentive, polite, and kind. We started off with the happy hour menu and ordered the Duck Parfait. I didn't know what to expect. The croutons were crispy and delicate and the duck liver was easy to spread and airy. The Normandy Burger was juicy and the bread was fluffy. But the star of the night Chicken Fricassée - wow! Incredibly tender, juicy, and garlicy. The sauce had a mashed potato buttery, smooth texture. Absolute must get.

Yelp
Nice restaurant in Sydney. Very popular so you have to make a reservation beforehand. The inside is very spacious but you have to go down some stairs so can be a bit claustrophobic. They have a nice theater area and place for jazz band. The servers are very attentive and friendly. I got the beef tartare and my friend got the steak. Both were really delicious.

Yelp
Hubert was the perfect way to round out our foodie experience in Sydney! As you descend down the stairs to the central dining room, you're immediately transported to a refined and lively restaurant. The interior design and decor is vintage and avant-garde. The live music elevates the venue to match the wonderful service. The delicious cuisine is truly a love letter to France. I wish I took more photos but that's what happens when you're really enjoying the incredible restaurant experience this place has to offer!

Yelp
Hidden gem. Down three flights of stairs to very French restaurant with trio jazz band. Plenty of tables plus bar area. They even have a multi seat theatre. Food good. We had boeuf bougenoin. Very good

Yelp
Beautiful and amazing experience. So fun having the music entertainment. Have never seen that before at a restaurant. The food was great too!

Yelp
Amazing food! Attentive service. Overall a really good experience. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Good food, good drinks, good service. Live music by jazz trio was great. Piped music selections also good. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
What's to say? This place is probably the hottest seat in Sydney (sorry, Quay). Excellent service, incredible food, and you have a live band...how's that's for ambiance?

Yelp
Jazz music, candlelight, or historic building, beautiful people, wonderful staff, how could you not be happy, happy. I love this place. I ordered steak and french fries and a nice glass of red wine perfect. What a minute... am i in France or Australia! Delicious! Fries cooked thin and perfect steak cook wonderfully red. Btw Phoebe was the hostess with the mostest. She handled the crowd so well. The band was fantastic. Calvin Welch is a master.

Yelp
Wonderful service and absolutely loved the vibe of both the restaurant and the bar with a funky live jazz band setting the scene. But the food.... really not up to the standard expected of a $1,200 bill (half wine, half food) for four people. Steak tartare (my go to dish across the world) was not presented well, lacked flavour (could taste no capers or onion) and came without the raw yolk (which the maître d' advised was the Italian way, not the French way - which doesn't match my experience in France but anyway). First time I've left any (in this case, most of it) on my plate. My friends all had a try but weren't keen either. The oysters were sensational. The prawn and scallop terrine was coated in burnt breadcrumbs which completely ruined the flavour. The Cote de Boeuf rib eye was tasty but like the other reviewer discovered, was very chewy (and rare not medium rare as ordered - they would have taken it back if I'd requested but my friends didn't want to wait and I prefer rare anyway so was quietly happy ;)). The foie gras was superb. The Pommes Anna recommended by our super lovely waitress, were full of flavour with the miso buerre blanc. The sorbets for dessert were really good - probably my favourite dish of the night, which is unusual for me as I'm more of a savoury fan than sweet. All in all, very disappointing food, but the excellent ambiance and service made it an enjoyable night. Not sure I'd return unless they changed chef though. (Sorry chef but when commanding these prices, you need to bring your best game and not let food out that doesn't meet standard). Nb: I did give the feedback to the Maître d' who listened well and said he'd pass on the feedback. I hope he does as this place has everything else going for it and could quite easily become one of my favourite places to take Sydney visitors. On a side note: they kindly arranged a table for us at the bar when our 2-hour time limit was up which was welcomed as it would have felt a bit rushed if we were expected to leave the moment we'd completed the third course.

Yelp
This was our favorite restaurant that we went to when visiting Sydney. The speakeasy vibe was very cool and we loved the live jazz performance. We sat at the bar which was very comfortable and split a variety of small dishes between us. We enjoyed everything that we ordered for both food and drinks.

Yelp
This is a well done classic French dish. The service is sleek, the atmosphere is nice, and it feels like you're in Paris

Yelp
We are very picky where we eat. We are huge foodies. We eat at high end restaurants and do tasting menus. I picked this spot for my birthday. Super excited to try... The waiter was super rude and pushy. We ordered and he kept pushing we should order more food. We said we were good but he kept saying we needed more. First red flag. After we go our main courses the waiter disappeared. No one came by to fill up our waters after that. No one checked in. My husbands steak was the most chewy steak he has ever eaten! Took him forever to chew and it was 65! My pasta was just average. Definitely nothing special It was my birthday and others around me were getting birthday desserts... not me. They literally forgot about our table lol! (We added it was Mr birthday to the res) We finally went up to the front to pay because it was ridiculous waiting an hour for someone to come by and acknowledge we were there. Honestly I'm going to discuss this with my credit card company if we aren't refunded at least some of the meal. So so saaaaad. Spent $200 for nothing.

Yelp
Just wrapping up a 1 month vacation. The last 5 days of which were spent in Sydney. What a wonderful experience it has been. Love the city and the people. Hope we are able to experience more of Australia someday. A new friend suggested looking on YouTube for things to do in Sydney. It is much better than the guide book I bought. While searching YouTube I came across Janice Fung. Her recommendations of places to visit and eat were spot on. Am so glad I saw her review of Restaurant Hubert. It was our last night and we wanted something with beef. She said that the steaks in Australia are delicious. We had a huge brunch @ Sydney Fish Market, so a luscious steak dinner seemed like a bit too much, so I remembered her happy hour suggestion of Restaurant Hubert. We didn't plan it, but we arrived there @ about 4:45. There was a line outside. We were maybe the 30th in line. After seeing the line, I was hoping we would make the cut. We did!! It was truly one of the best burgers I have ever had. It was simple and so delicious. That is the 1st time I ever had gruyere cheese on a burger. Fantastic! I also tried the fried zucchini blossoms. It tasted like crispy tempura. We were seated @ the bar, and despite being extremely busy, he was so nice and helpful. He explained a couple of different drinks for me. I decided on the Negroni. It was my very 1st and 2nd! Delicious. All the staff were very nice and friendly. Restaurant Hubert is 20/10 in my opinion. Go early to make sure you get in. I think happy hour is only an hour 5-6 in the bar area. Am so glad we got in! It was a wonderful way to finish our last night of vacation and our last night in Sydney!

Yelp
The candle lit atmosphere, music, and food was incredible! We are from Florida but a local friend recommended it and we're thrilled to have experienced the warmth of the hostess and waitress.

Yelp
My god, was I so excited to try "one of the best restaurants in Sydney", only to be super disappointed. Out of all the places we could have gone, we had chosen Restaurant Hubert + Aria to be our fine dining experiences during our trip down under. My boyfriend was thrilled to be able to finally score a reservation here, albiet an early one. Every blog and restaurant critic/reviewer we could find when doing our research on Sydney led us to believe that we had to try their "amazing" duck. The verdict? This was probably the most bland and fatty duck I've ever had in my life, and to add insult to injury, in the most romantic setting too. We couldn't pack the rest to go because 1. we were staying at a hotel 2. it wasn't tasty so we wouldn't want to, even if we could. We felt like we had to wash it down w/ some vino and not waste an entire duck. Completely killed my mood. Also, when we ordered a salad on the side, the salad was literally a head of lettuce. It was not even cut. What the.... For such a fine establishment, the LEAST you can do is chop your salad...at least separate the leaves from the base/stem so your patrons aren't ripping at it like savages. The decor is absolutely beautiful, but sadly this isn't want stuck with me. I walked out appalled by how much emphasis was put on satisfying people's visual appetite while the service was slightly pretentious- as if they were completely unaware that their food was subpar on so many levels. 100% Hype.

Michael N.

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance were all fantastic! Definitely a must visit if you're in Sydney

Yelp
Pretty classy French restaurant. My husband and I got a nice gift certificate, and so we decided to indulge ourselves in one go. This place is pretty hidden; from street level, it's just a door that leads you a floor or two downstairs. The first clearing you will arrive at has a desk, but when we went for lunch, it wasn't manned by anybody, which confused us as well as a deliveryman who arrived shortly after us. When we tried calling out, nobody answered, and so after a few minutes, I went down another flight of steps and found the actual restaurant as well as the host's desk. We tried the quiche lorraine, escargot, kimchi gratin, Normandy burger, and a couple more that I can't recall (I told you we indulged). Everything we had was spectacular; the only thing that I wasn't too impressed by was the kimchi gratin. Since I'm Korean, I was excited to try a new rendition of a kimchi dish, but the food was less than a centimeter high, and it was just kimchi and cheese. I expected these two main ingredients would be accompanied by something else to beef it up a bit. Maybe some other greens? Just my opinion. Like I said, everything else was pretty spectacular. Service was good; they had a special guy to recommend drinks if you're a bit lost or undecided. I was also highly impressed they had a couple orange wines! Since I tried it at one other place in Vancouver, I had been looking for some other orange wines to try, but considering it's pretty new, I've been having a terrible time finding establishments stocking it. The vibe was definitely romantic, even though we went for lunch, because it's underground and a bit dim, my husband and I were able to enjoy the beautiful decor and gaze into each other's eyes (barf). Definitely would come back for a special night out.

Yelp
Had a lovely meal and would definitely go back. A lovely venue and attentive service from the knowledgeable floor staff some of whom are French which added to the ambiance. Food was as you would expect from the price point with a good variety meals including vegetarian options. The only let down being the percolated coffee (no espresso available).

Yelp
AMAZING! Given I knew nothing of Syndey as a tourist, I searched for "best restaurant in Sydney" on Google, clicked the first link (I think it was TimeOut), scrolled all the way down to the #1 choice, and voila - found Hubert. We had no expectations walking to the restaurant, but the moment we found the right door (no, it's not the fancy glass window/door restaurant at the building lobby..), we were impressed! But first... FOOD: 5/5 The food here is meant to be shared - which is great for someone who's totally new to the menu. Going down the menu, we had: 1. Malakoff - fried gruyere, with just the right hint of stinkiness and creaminess 2. Prime beef tartare - can't pass he Wagyu, and the fries were delicious! Be warned, big portion 3. John Dory - still feels like I'm eating some fancy British dude or Dory from Finding Nemo, but the fish was delicious anyways 4. Bavette steak - delicious; this was my girlfriend's entree, but I eyed it enough time that she got the hint that I want not just one, but two slices :) 5. Pommes Anna - a potato side and so so good! SERVICE: 4.5/5 The hostess when we got there wasn't the kindest - made us wait a while and than told us we should sit at the bar and wait. And then when it was our turn to get seated, only bar seats were available... wait, why didn't she just tell us that to start off? Anyways, she was the anomaly - lesson learned is to just make the darn reservation, and ask for main dining room seating. Non-bar seats for parties of 2 are few, so that's definitely the right move. Our bartender / waiter was fantastic. Made all the right recommendations and knew the menu well! AMBIANCE: 5/5 Breathtakingly beautiful and classy, wouldn't have ever expected this of a basement! It's themed as a fancy theater / cabaret, and had we stayed longer, I'm sure there would've been a live show. Absolutely amazing place for a fancy French dinner date! To summarize how much we loved this place - we unfortunately left Sydney the next morning and didn't get a chance to go for round 2. But, on our way back from Melbourne to Sydney before heading to LAX, we got in Sydney Kingsford at 10:40pm and seriously, I mean SERIOUSLY, considered taking the 30 minute train into the city just for this again. We regretfully did not because we had an early flight to catch the next morning and were staying at by the airport, but I emphasize the "regretfully did not". TL;DR: This restaurant would be a strong reason for me to want to come back to Sydney. This, and perhaps when there's actually an opera playing at the Sydney Opera House!

Yelp
"Restaurant Hubert" is a fine dining restaurant for special celebrations. The customer service is really top notch, knowledgeable (about wine that best goes along with the dish) and warming. The setting of Hubert is very very France-like, romantic, French vintage. I booked this restaurant to celebrate my father's birthday. One of the waitress probably knew it was the case and made the cake extra special with additional decorations which I did not request. It was very kind of them to do so voluntarily. Reservation is a must if you want to have a sitting. I believe the service, relaxing atmosphere and fine cuisine justified its price.

Yelp
This place is fricking awesome! The food was some of the best I've eaten in Sydney. Duck a la Orange with duck sausage inserted under the crispy duck skin was a mind blowing experience. The steak (? More like a rib roast off a very big bone?) was just outstanding with the tomato bernaise sauce on the side. Potatoes in a light creamy sauce were to die for. The only disappointing thing about Restaurant Hubert was that I couldn't try more dishes! Go there with a group, share all your dishes (they're all large enough and intended for sharing!) and make sure to go on an empty stomach. And don't even think about ordering one dessert each - they're massive too! The Santa Claus melon with coconut sorbet is really unique and worth trying

Yelp
Restaurant Hubert's - A beautiful new restaurant on Bligh Street in the Sydney CBD. This place is seriously beautiful. Grand wooden doors lead you down a spiral staircase. Little bottles and treasures are displayed in glass cabinets that frame the stairs which lead you into this classic French world. The attention to detail is just fabulous, every little detail has been thought of. Restaurant Hubert offers a dining room, two bars and a theatre! I had a sneak peak in the theatre (with permission of course) and its glorious. I hope to see performances of cabaret theatre or burlesque dancers whilst being served old fashions! Restaurant Hubert, is the first restaurant from the Swillhouse Group (Shady Pines Saloon, The Baxter inn and Frankie's pizza). Dan Pepperell is the chef extraordinaire from 10 William street. The menu includes French bistro classics and every mouthful is divine. We shared a few dishes and my favourite was the anchovies. The best anchovies I've ever had. Garlic butter topped with anchovies and watercress. Delicious! My brother had the steak which was cooked to perfection - arguably the best steak he's had - wow - now that's saying something! I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu.. Both bars and the restaurant boast a great wine and cocktail menu. I loved watching the waiters race up the wooden ladder at Bar Normandy and select a bottle from the large wine cellar and fly back down the stairs with the bottle under their arm, which is a piece of art in itself. The music I remember playing was the South Pacific classic "I'm going to wash that man right out of my hair" 1940's charm.. My advice is go visit Hubert's soon - before long everyone is going to find out how fabulous this place is and you will be lining up to get in! If you still can't figure out where it is - it's at the old Celestial Chinese restaurant - which had the pond and koi and bridge? Remember the fluorescent street sign which led to a Chinese grotto complete with fish pond and topped off with aqua and salmon colours on the walls. But it's no longer the Chinese 80's time warp it once was. It's now a beautiful, elegant, fun restaurant. I've found my new favourite Sydney restaurant. Five dazzling stars from me!

Yelp
This is totally my scene!! Loved the speakeasy feel walking down the circular staircase to this treasure of a place. The food was the absolute foodie heaven! We tried oysters mignonette, steak tartare, escargot OX, a mushroom au poivre that would make you think you died and went to heaven, and California caviar!! Service was very attentive and professional, ambiance was comfortable and relaxing with a certain old fashion class. Wish we could have something like this in Honolulu!! Best of all worlds coming together to please all senses!

Yelp
Hmmm...struggling with this review and waffling between 3 and 4 stars. I will start by saying that the ambiance at Hubert is spectacular. When you walk in through the front door, you are led down a corridor and stairs that brings you down below street level to the primary seating with a bar and performance area for live music. A very speakeasy feel. We arrived relatively early on a Thursday, and despite there being plenty of seating available on the floor, they first attempted to seat us at the bar. Upon asking, we were able to be seated in one of the many available, non-reserved tables. From there, there was a vast menu of items. It became very clear that this French restaurant primarily serves small dishes with the intent of being shared among many. As we only had a table of two, our waiter recommended 5 dishes of varying portion sizes. Ultimately, the bill came out to be 70 AUD/person, which translates to about $50 USD/person. Was the experience generally good? Yes. But if I'm paying over $100 for two people, I expect to leave the restaurant full. For the food we ordered (and choose wisely because I think this matters): - Abalone Rillette - slow cooked greenlip abalone and confit pork belly. 3.5/5. A little salty, but the pork and the abalone was very tender. - Oeufs en Gelee - soft egg yolk, bonito jelly, trout roe, avruga. 1/5. Based on the menu description, I never would have imagined that this dish is strictly jello on a plate, with some roe and egg yolk. I anticipated that the dish would be a little more substantial. The taste was fishy as it was roe and bonito jelly, and did very little to fill us up. Would not recommend. - Malakoff - fried gruyere, dijon mustard, dill pickle. 4/5. Just as advertised. Simple but delicious. - Bavette Steak - 300 g grilled rangers valley flank, bordelaise butter. 3.5/5. Steak was very good, cooked well, and the bordelaise butter was a great accompaniment. A little pricey for the quantity and presentation. - Pommes Anna - layered potato, beurre blanc. 5/5. Literally potatoes fried and presented beautifully, with a delicious sauce. Another one of these simple, but worth it, dishes. Ultimately, we had an enjoyable experience, but were a little turned off by the price tag, initial seating service, and the variance in the food we ordered.

Yelp
Hubert When Hubert first opened, there was a lot of hype surround this French inspired restaurant. It was the "place to go" and bookings were practically impossible. We went a fair time after the hype had died down, which allowed us to get a group booking at a reasonable time. Entering from Bligh Street, you're met with a huge wooden door and then the spiral staircase down to the restaurant is what strikes you first. As you stroll down this staircase which is lined with bottles of alcohol and dimmed lights, and you feel like you're stepping back many years. As you enter the restaurant, there is a bar to the right and a huge dining space of tables, booths and feels like you're in Europe. Fringed lamps, candles with dripping wax and a stage with a piano is set up and as waiters move around the room, it feels vintage, romantic, classy and sophisticated. Whilst the restaurant is expensive, the banquet menu was extremely good value. For $85, you get 10 courses to share, needing a four-person minimum for the meal. Beginning with bread and charcuterie is good to pick from whilst you're setting in to a drink or two. Don't fill up too much as there is a lot of food ahead of you. The duck parfait was super cute: a plate of liver mousse, topped with bread "ducks". The market vegetables with pickled mussels and aioli were colourful and fresh. One of my favourite foods is beef tartare and this one here is good quality wagyu served with some extremely nicely flavoured French fries. The main dish of the evening is a whole chicken with bread sauce, extremely moist and easy to devour (if you're not already too full). The small strips of layered potato in a buttery sauce were incredible and with a salad of red velvet lettuce and herbs made the sides to our main. What else could you have for dessert, but Crème Caramel! Light and tasty, made with egg custard and a bitter caramel. If you do want to try a little more, there's a $125 banquet too. Ala carte would suit a duo of diners, but any more than that, get a banquet as it allows you to sample more options, and the key favourites from this top restaurant. The drinks are high quality, the wine list is incredible and the service is impeccable. The waiters are efficient and unobtrusive and food comes out in a timely manner. Highly suggested for your next classy dining experience in Sydney.

Yelp
Ridiculously good. Ripping food and drinks menu. Amazing staff and venue! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Changed for two martinis. Only had one! When questioning the maître d' about it, who, 'by-the-buy', had taken the order, said "we serve two shots in a martini!" That's ok with me but, I only order one drink! His attitude was condescending and kind of snooty. Also to note: the martini was served in a wine glass. Maybe my mistake was ordering a "London" gin in a French restaurant. Nevertheless: we ARE here in Australia! Are we not? The food was very tasty and well presented. The wait staff, for the most part, were very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about their fair and wine, and made some very enjoyable suggestions. The mushroom, in a peppercorn sauce, was delectable yet, when asked about what type of mushroom it might be, the maître d', in an off-colored kind of way [maybe trying to be funny] exclaims: "a big one!" Thanks! I can see that for myself. Does he not know: Arrogance is a mask ignorance hides behind! Live music was great! Great musicians doing some great classic Sinatra and other tunes. Notwithstanding the maître d' may be happy to know: WE WILL NOT RETURN!

Yelp
We came here for after dinner drinks. Even though it's a French restaurant, the ambiance and decor has a real old school New York Italian feel which actually plays pretty well. The service was great and they make you feel at home. The only reason for the docked star is that they were out of a bunch of the whiskeys that we wanted to try on the menu. We got excited to see the extensive whiskey list but then was disappointed when a lot of them were not there.

Yelp
Lunch was Mediocre in my opinion. Came here with my friend and the menu is small and the dishes are meant to be shared plates. The limited menu, however, really affected the intention of the restaurant to share plates as 1) Once you remove the raw seafood options for the menu (as I would just go get raw seafood from the fish market and eat it at home) you are left with a mixture of really simple dishes (cured meats, market vegetables etc) and some somewhat interesting dishes, 2) This restaurant is french and technically somewhat upscale but the food largely fall under the category of quick french snacks (ie. The croque-monsieur). That aside, my friend and I ordered the Croque-monsieur, kimchi gratin and Steak Tartare. The Croque-monsieur was the original x10 (in terms of overdoing every aspect of the flavor and balance), the steak tartare was solid and well proportioned and the Kimchi Gratin was great (was not suspecting to find a good fusion dish in a French restaurant). Overall, the place was OK but I would not look at this place as a lunch destination but a place for a chat over small snacks and a glass of wine. Perhaps the dinner is different? With all that said, however, my friend and I loved our waiter and were able to chat intimately as the establishment had comfortable seating, well picked decor and a strikingly accurate sense of what dimmed lights, at its best, can do.

Yelp
Down the stairs and into a whole 'nother world. Isolated, old school, and classy to the core if you like wood tones, dim lighting, and not one, but two extensive bars. Raw oysters were creamy, reminding me a little of uni, while the oeufs en gelee (soft egg yolk, bonito jelly, trout roe, avruga) was very good. Malakoff (fried grueye with dijon mustard, pickles on the side) was superb. Sadly I finished things off with the poisson en papillote (fish of the day) which was undistinguished compared to the rest of the food-- just buttery and a bit of lemon, properly cooked to perfection but not very interesting. The bar menu is extensive in almost all respects, and they definitely know their scotch. I was impressed. Reservations are for 6 or more only, and about a third of the menu is larger dishes you'll definitely want to be in a group to share, unless you really want to try to tackle 1kg of ribeye or a whole chicken yourself. If you're less than 6 people, come first thing on a weekend for dinner, in fact I advise you be a few minutes earlier than their 17:00 opening less you miss the first seating! Hard to get the full experience without repeated visits, so will stick with 4* for now.

Yelp
Went in last night on the basis of other reviews and enjoyed Hubert very much. They only accept bookings for 6 or more so expect a wait if it is a busy night. We got in before the rush but still faced a 30 minute wait so opted for the bar seating (and menu). I had the steak frites and throughly recommend. Excellent piece of meat and cooked perfectly rare. My wife had the burger which was a little plain. Just the burger and an overly thick slice of onion. Maybe stay away from that one. Still, service was excellent and so was my steak, hence the 5 stars.

Yelp
THE BEST STEAK I'VE EVER EATEN!!!! We stopped in for lunch and did the set lunch menu for $75/pp. it was AMAZING!!! Everything was flavored perfectly, cooked on point. Our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. So...get the steak. The charcuterie plate was also delicious with a nice variety of meats. You could skip the beef tartare. It was good, but not as good as everything else. You MUST get here. Definitely a memorable meal.

Yelp
Jeez, I just wrote about another French restaurant and I'd forgotten we had been here months ago. Again, it seems like there must be a few people in the industry that have recognised the need for some good French restaurants, because Hubert is great. The service was fantastic and they are dangerously good at sales. Again, the food is heavy, like French should be. So plan to roll out of here.

Yelp
Wow! This was very well cooked classic French food. The service was slick, the atmosphere was spot on and the band rolled out great music all night. I was transported back to my younger days visiting France and was immediately in my happy place. It's a must visit restaurant.

Yelp
Upon entering I can imagine how Owen Wilson must have felt when he went back in time in Midnight in Paris. It's a magical setting and they really did it right- the music, the decor, the room itself. As for the food, I wouldn't say that the emperor has no clothes, but maybe he's just wearing his undies? I am not a local and I missed coming here when it was white hot, but even now it's still hard to get a table. You still get the feeling the food should be something special... We had the baramundi and a steak, both of which were fairly good but neither blew me away. I guess given the reputation and the price, I would have expected something a little more innovative or noteworthy. If I recommended coming here, it would be for a cocktail to enjoy the atmosphere.

Yelp
I was sooo impressed! We came early on a Wednesday WITH reservations. Seated right away. The ambiance was perfect and great for groups and intimate dining. We loved everything we had. The lobster spaghetti, the cheese ball, the mushrooms!!!, the fish, were all very well done! I will definitely be back here next time I am in Sydney! The service and hosts were lovely too.

Yelp
What a vibe ! Once you walk down the stairs and enter the bar/ restaurant you straight away feel immersed ! A travel through time and space...welcome to the roaring twenties ! Even though there are quite a few table they are spaces well enough so that it still feels quite intimate. And the room is not too loud either, vribrant and buyant just as needed. There was 5 of us - we shared 4 entrees, 2 mains, 2 sides and 2 deserts. Could have probably gone with a bit less but oh well it great to try as much as you can from the menu. The menu is supposed to be french, I did recognised a few things/ the inspiration but I would definitely not consider it as a French restaurant... On the food side: - the bread is absolutely delicious - entrees: if you like anchovies the toast are delicious. The tartare was good too. We also had the malakoff and the artichoke but would not recommend these - mains: the Bavette is very tender and the butter with parsley just perfect with it. Portion is quite small for the price I think though. The chicken fricassee is really moist and the plate is huge. But it is nothing special. The cote de boeuf looked great - sides: kimchi grating and potatoes are good. Servings are not huge either - deserts: only tried the religieuse which was very well done. Wine- the saint chinian "mas au schist" is really good if you wanna go with a French wine below 80$/bottle ! I would recommend going to really experience the great atmosphere but just do not expect an amazing culinary experience, the food is good but there was no real standout for me and I doubt I will remember what I ate in a few weeks !

Yelp
This restaurant was awesome! I very much enjoyed it. By the time I arrived the restaurant was full, they seated me at the bar. I had two appetizers: oysters and octopus. They were both delicious. And the decor is completely charming. If you are in the Sydney Center I definitely suggest you check it out. A very enjoyable dinner. The wine was also fine! ;o)

Yelp
Went here for Friday dinner with table of 6. Great spot. Food is very good, drinks list and the overall unique atmosphere even better. Really enjoyed the French cooking and advice from the sommelier. Tended to rush meals out for earlier tables very quickly to make space for later sittings. That was the main downside.

Yelp
It's in fact 4.5, why ? I will explain later ;-) it's amazing interior and it is hard to believe it is in Sydney's CBD. Food was absolutely delicious: steak, fish and fried Gruyer 5 stars or even more. Great service, from your concierge to waiters, everyone was friendly , funny, professional and helpful. So why the hell I want to take away half a star from you. Well...bloody hell! Maybe you didn't know about it, but people go to restaurants to eat, not to wait for table. I have no idea why this concept is so popular in Sydney and Melbourne. Maybe it works well for 18 yo on a first date , they can soak a drink and look in each others eyes. Maybe it is a good concept for mates after work going out for bites and beers. It is definitely a rubbish concept for any hungry adult who can pick up phone or use your website to book a dinner with wife ahead of time. Cause waiting 1hr for a table when I am hungry simply doesn't work and we can discuss if it should be 70-30 or 40-60 walkin vs booking, but if you want to serve adults act like one. Beside of that- great job guys
