The Best French Restaurants in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"While somewhat of a tourist haunt, Jérôme Ferrer’s flagship restaurant may not hit the absurd high notes that some claim, but it still does a solid job. Both the tasting and discovery menus are safe bets, featuring dishes like pan-fried foie gras in passion fruit gremolata and fizzy candy. Diners take note: The restaurant requests that customers dress in “business casual” to eat here, and that’s saying a lot for Montreal." - JP Karwacki, Holly Tousignant

Fantastic Dining Experience! Refined and whimsical dishes ranged from rustic classics to beautiful contemporary pieces of art. Service staff were professional and friendly with exceptional tableside service. Lovely atmosphere. Wine pairings were well thought out. Of note*** bring a very large appetite if you plan on doing the birthday menu. The amount of food that arrives is enough to fill any glutton.

I had the chance to have dinner by myself last Friday and the food was absolutely delicious. As a cook and a big foodie, it really did inspire me to taste all the delicious food they had to offer. The only little negative thing I would have to say is that service was pretty slow at times as it took a good 25 minutes to get the bill at the end. Apart from that though all the waiters were super nice and everything was great!

My boyfriend and I recently celebrated our 2-year anniversary at Jerome Ferrer, and it was an unforgettable experience. Everything was great, and the service was impeccable. We've tried many restaurants in Montreal, but this is the first one we truly loved. We opted for the tasting menu at $90 per person, which was their first night offering a 17-course service. The servers were still getting accustomed to the new menu, but they handled everything with perfection. The only downside was the large portion sizes; I was already full after the starters. Fortunately, we were able to take home everything we couldn't finish. However, they forgot to include the desserts, which were two pear tarts, if I'm not mistaken. Despite this minor hiccup, the overall experience was exceptional. With two champagne glasses and four wines, the total bill, including tax and tips, was around $430.I highly recommend!

I came here on a Saturday night with reservations for the 7 course chef's menu with wine pairing. Parking in the area is not great but there are paid parking lots you can use. I came here 2 days after they received their Michelin star and it was as amazing as expected. Quite an experience. We left feeling quite full so if you think you're going to leave hungry, think again. After paying the bill, the waiter realized it was for a birthday and gave us extra dessert and a gift (lobster oil) to leave with. Their service is quite extraordinary which is part of the Michelin experience. This is not the kind of place that you go to ever weekend but even if you go only once, you'll never forget it. Had a great time, thank you for a memorable night.

My wife and I went there for birthday brunch. The receptionist and servers were just... there, not friendly, not rude. The menu said we were invited to their home to enjoy their meal, but I didn't feel welcomed. I felt like I was there to spend money on their food, which I did, happily. I got their signature meal, and my wife got a cheaper course meal. Everything, from the appetizers to dessert, was well-made with lots of local stuff. I saw some clever ways they cooked the main dishes, but none of it was amazing or so good that gave me goosebumps. Still not a bad place for brunch or lunch.

We’ve been to many Michelin star restaurants in Paris and I came to Europea 9 years ago. But this visit we had today at Europea was extremely disappointing. The service was straightforwardly bad, so many things I can almost write an essay here but I don’t want to elaborate on them because it’s too much of a waste of my time. Actually to be more specific, the gentleman in chefs clothes is quite nice. But the servers in suits, man, I thought the tall slim guy who helped us was unprofessional enough, and then later an elder one was just straight up rude. When we were in Paris and experiencing different Michelin star restaurants, we had fun discussing, okay this restaurant is good in this aspect, and that one is good in another aspect. But Europea? We literally don’t know how it got the star. The service is worse than most of the restaurants in Montreal and the food is not even that good. There’s no refreshing food to balance the greasy. Just greasy greasy greasy from beginning to the end. The cotton candy is not even pink any more, that was the signature thing for Europea back when I visited 9 years ago. Overall, we won’t come back to this restaurant again.

This is a classic case of: The higher the expectations, the greater the disappointment. Service is great people are nice, but the food, the food… I came for good food and what a disappointment. Everything is presented nicely but taste really bad. The artichoke with the egg on top, both my wife and I almost threw up. The duck was so dry I took only one bite. The waiter felt bad so he brought us a lobster tail from the sister restaurant which was ok. Deserts were nice. Was not worth the $250 I left there. In a regular restaurant I would have just returned 80% of the food that was served.

Exactly what you’d expect from Restaurant Jérôme Ferrer. The food was outstanding, creative, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The ambiance was elegant without being stuffy, and the service was on attentive, professional, and warm. It’s a great way to enjoy high-end cuisine at a surprisingly reasonable price. A must try!

Yelp
Great food, whimsical concept and friendly service. We had a group of 20 diners in their private dining room/area. Enjoyed the 11-course tasting menu along with premium wine pairings.

Yelp
Good experience and interesting concept. If you're used to fine dining in NYC then this is ok but not wow. Beautiful restaurant and staff is quick and attentive. A one time thing.

Yelp
2 things I want to say in case you don't want to read my review. 1. I have traveled around the world to many places and always looked for the top rated restaurants to try. I've been to many Michelin 2 stars restaurants in Europe, America and Asia. Was impressed by many but nothing like my experience here in jérôme Ferrer. 2. If the top rating is 5 stars, then this restaurant deserves an 8 stars. It's hard to describe the experience so I'll just focus on the food and service. The service was excellent. To be frank, the team here were so well trained, it gave a different meaning to server. As a president and CEO of a company, I found their skills and manner impressive. They earned my respect. It's not just being friendly and attentive, they need to know how to handle food in a sense of preparing it by finishing cooking and present it. The restaurant decor was simple and tasteful with a lot of thought on presenting and experience the food, brought the patrons to a new dimension of experiencing food in a very different manner. I will just pick up a few courses to comment: Onion soup - The presentation is creative and labor intensive, the soup itself is extraordinary. Flavor is excellent, the cheese crisp was a great touch. Lobster cappuccino - The intense flavor of the lobster made this the best lobster bisque I ever had. The cheese cookies just took it over and beyond. The Foie gras - To cook Foie gras this good is quite challenging, may be not to a professional chef... The cutlet was cooked medium. Many chefs do it medium rare so it can be very tender and soft inside. This piece of art is medium cooked but still soft. High quality Foie gras without noticing any tendon. Impressive. Lobster - Let alone the presentation, but the lobster is extraordinarily. I have had so many lobster made in different way but this perfectly cooked lobster with perfect tenderness is amazing. The sauce used in different dishes not only didn't overwhelm the flavor of the dish but enhanced it. That's why it's so impressive about it. Getting a good meal is easy, but the creativity and the artistic of composing the menu and Cook the food so perfectly is just amazing. One has to come and experience it to know what I'm talking about. Having been to so many great restaurants, I'm confidence to say this is one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at and it's not just about the great food but the whole package: The experience.

Yelp
Come here for the experience. The food, no so much. Perhaps this type of food is not to my taste. The service is pretty good though. Wouldn't recommend, personally. The taste of the food isn't worth the price. I expected better from the good reviews. Expect to be here for 3 hours. I can see how people would enjoy the experience though. The restaurant was very warm and the smoke from the lobster smelled bad. The table next to us had the smoke blowing in our direction too and I didn't want to inhale.

Yelp
The Jerome Ferrer experience is one I will never forget, as it truly goes beyond just the gastronomical journey. We opted for the 8-course dinner, and with 2 people, you can order and try everything on the menu. It was more than enough - it is so filling. From the get-go, every item served was presented in a really out-of-the-box, and the team really put in the effort to go beyond all your expectations. This includes a gigantic block of wood to hang beef jerky that also has a spile to collect running water for hand towels, lobster cappuccino, DIY "taco-style" fish, and more. But, the 6th course was my favourite, in terms of the meal but also the experience. On the menu, it tells you it's a short walk. It's hard to say what to expect. When that comes around, you're given a small takeout box, and then led to a room upstairs that is slightly concealed. The door reveals a childhood like room that's reminiscent of a country house, with heavy wooden décor. In the center of the room is a table filled with jars of cookies, small desserts, and other sweets. This is a course for you to fill your takeout box with whatever item to take as a keepsake. How sweet and unique of an experience! Perhaps just one point to note - everything came very fast, especially at the beginning where there were a lot of appetizers. Though you are given a heads up that things will be served fast, it was still a little faster than initially thought, and in some way felt that the explanations were rushed. Would only recommend that team slow things down just a bit, to let customers wrap their head around what is coming!

Yelp
A top tier dining experience. Opted for the 8 course tasting menu and it was more than worth it. Service was impeccable and the courses were perfect. Especially the dessert service where they bring you to a candy room where you can fill a box with as many sweets and pastries as you want. Don't be fooled this is a fine dining restaurant. Not only was the food delicious, the presentation was always mind blowing. Coming here was like going on a culinary adventure.

Yelp
I love food, what can I say. Everywhere I go around the world I seek out fabulous food and drink, and Jerome Ferrer did not disappoint. Great bar service in two languages. Great guys. Perfectly done scallops and risotto. Best modern interpretation of a Caesar Salad I've had in a long time. Solid wine-by-the-glass selections. Reasonable price for the quality and freshness of the food. Solid 5 stars.

Yelp
I think that this restaurant would benefit from focusing more on the food and less on the show. Although the fanciful way the food was presented was a delight in most cases, the food continuously fell short. The "cappuccino" had gritty, slimy truffle on the bottom, the ceviche course had inconsistent amounts of fish (mine was all scallop and my wife's was all shrimp, and both tasted metallic and off), the tuna course that they set on fire at the table ends up tasting like eating charcoal, and the lobster course was borderline raw - making the lobster stringy and not pleasant to eat. We noticed the table behind us also sent the course back to cook it more so it wasn't just us. Unfortunately the "show" part of the food also broke down on a couple occasions. For one course, dry ice drips down through a log and maple tap into a bucket with towels that expand so you can wipe your hands after the snack courses. This is a very clever and fun idea! Unfortunately it didn't work and I had to pour my glass of water onto the towels to get them to expand. And as mentioned above, the table side flaming tuna looked good but made the tuna borderline inedible. And finally they had a "blind" pairing for one of the wines that I felt was ultimately distracting and made me feel like I was being tested. I can't comment on any of the other courses, because my wife was not feeling well at this point (not related to the food). If the food was better I think we would have powered through, but we decided to abandon the 11-course meal after only 6 courses. I tried to discreetly discuss this with one of the front house members (who was very nice and also tried to keep it discreet), but a rather aggressive gentleman from the front of the kitchen took over from her and made a whole show of us leaving right in front of the entire restaurant. It was totally unprofessional. When he presented us with the bill, the sommelier snatched it right out of my hand to look it over, which was also extremely rude. I guess he was making sure we got charged for the full 250 dollar wine pairing we bought even though I only had half of the pairings at that point. And to be clear, we've been to enough of these places to understand the preparation that goes into each reservation. When I went up to first tell someone we were leaving I made clear that we would pay the entire bill and we weren't expecting any accommodations. Nor did they offer us any. We just wanted to discreetly pay and leave without making a scene. They did offer to make as much of the remaining courses for us to take to go, but it was taking a bit too long and we really needed to go. Ultimately we paid our bill and left. I'd recommend you try Au Pied de Cochon: (https://www.yelp.com/biz/au-pied-de-cochon-montréal-2?hrid=pgHAOrSw7FmgbPpYT0PCPg&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)) Or Garde Manger instead.

Yelp
This was literally like a magic show, i think it was dollars well spent. I would probably starve myself next time before I go, because they serve a lot of food I was looking for some Michelin star restaurants in Montreal and apparently there's no Michelin.. but I end up finding something that I think it's pretty close to my previous Michelin star experience. To me, going to a fine dining restaurant is not just about food, but more about the whole experience, I want to be surprised either by the taste or the presentation, or the attention to details. This restaurant really satisfied my expectations. They gave us a lot of starters at the beginning that was not listed on the menu, it was served at a really fast pace, was a bit overwhelmed by it cause I barely had enough time to take pictures and eat. They then served us fresh bread with different flavors, you can see the steam coming out of the bread when you rip it appart, I believe they were made of natural ingredients (spinach, beets, sweet potatoes and carrots) Lobster cappuccino: some lobster soup with cream, it tasted pretty good Main course wise: vs I think the duck dumplings and crab cake were equally good, tho since I had a lot of crab cake before, I'll say duck is more unique vs The angus beef came with a side of truffle smashed potato, I liked that more than the beef. So far I haven't had any steak at a fine dinning restaurant that was better than the fried aged steak I had at a steak house. I would pick the lobster over the beef, which comes with a serving of lobster soup on the side. The oyster was pretty cool visually, they put some dried ice to create a mist effect After that, there's a " break or stroll ", they brought us upstairs to a special room with a staff making some kinda of Canadian duck maple syrup with brow sugar biscuit, it was surged in a maple syrup can with ketchup, its was fun but I didn't really like the food as much After getting back downstairs, they haves us a few gifts with 2 boxes of chocolate, table cloth and some kind of truffle infused oil. dessert: brought out the cotton candy tree with 2 apple desserts that were ok, fun but I didn't like the taste as much. The last one was a halal berry juice sorbet dessert that I really liked. They also served a bunch of small cakes and pastries, plus a one year anniversary cake with a candle wine pairing was pretty good, went for Prestige Sommelier Bundle, 3 glasses of wine, see picture for the type of wine

Yelp
My favorite, most exquisite dining experience ever. The number and variety of each delicious and gorgeous dish was mind-boggingly wonderful. Highly recommend but expect to pay over $300+ per person.

Yelp
We have already been telling people about this place for years! That if you go to one restaurant in Montreal, it should be this one. You can choose between 8 or 10 course meal, and will be delighted (and stuffed) either way. This is one of those rare and extraordinary places that gives you much more than a meal, but a multi-sensory experience. A place that takes its food seriously, yet has a sense of humor. I don't want to give away all the fun surprises, but trust me- I've eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world land this has remained in my top 5 recommendations of anywhere I've eaten in the world. If you have a foodie with a sense of humor or someone with a sense of humor who loves food- get here asap.

Chia L.

Yelp
Food is exquisite! See the pictures for details. Expensive but worth while experience. At one eighty five a person it is not for the everyday meal. But once in a lifetime it is ok.

Yelp
This is an absolutely amazing restaurant. The food and experience are one of a kind. The staff is attentive and very friendly. There is not a single flaw I can find in this restaurant or staff. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone I know.

Yelp
Dinner and a show is the best way to describe this experience. Each dish was presented in an extravagant way with food on a tree or delivered in a book, but the food itself was unfortunately lacking. We did the tasting menu and wine pairing, but disappointment was clearly on the menu as well. The wines just simply didn't pair with the courses and we had to ask three times what the differences were in each tier of wine tastings, given vague answers hinting that the wines were all different in each tier, to finally find out all but two were the same exact wines, but for a helfty price difference. The first few dishes had dallops of a citrus gel that was so sour, so over powering, that it was the only tangy mess i could focus on. After the streak of citrus disaster was over, the following dishes just simply lacked flavor or excitement. My favorite course was the lobster cappuccino which was amazing, but all else fell extremely short. I can appreciate the attempt at theatrics and presentation but when the food doesn't deliver, the whole experience becomes...tacky. At the end of our course tasting we were presented with a chinese food rice box container and taken for a walk upstairs to a room set up with tables of pastries sitting out in the open to choose from. Over all, I would not recommend this restaurant, if you are looking for delicious food and great service, look elsewhere.

Yelp
Long review... Food and the set menu experience is probably 4.8/5. Will talk about it in the second part of the review. First, reason why I'm frustrated and giving it 1 star only... When I go to a "fancy" restaurant, one of the minimal expectations is that you get the bill right. You make a mistake, no problem, you fix it, everyone makes mistake. But then you tell me you can't fix the error and instead, offer me an alternative. If you truly respect your customers, this alternative should be greater the error you made. Which is not the case here. Here is the rant. It was dinner for 2. We both ordered a glass of champagne/wine to start. Then I ordered the 4 glasses wine pairing (prestige bundle). We were happy with the meal, everything's good. Then they started serving desserts, and someone came with a loaded cart of different alcohol selections. At this point, I only had 3 glasses of wine from the pairing/bundle, so I thought, the last one of the four pairings, for the dessert, I get to pair whatever I want by myself, and I ordered a brandy. Bill came, I took a look, the total was reasonable, so I was about to pay. Then the server came back and said he made an error and needed to re-run the bill. He brought the new bill, of course now I wanted to take a closer look. They charged for the 4 glasses wine pairing, and charged for our starter champagne/wine x 2, and charged for the brandy I got. So I told the server there is a mistake, if you charging me separately for the brandy, then I only had 3 glasses of wine from the pairing/bundle. He said he will look into it, and came back and admitted that they made a mistake, but he "can't change" the wine pairing to the 3 glasses wine pairing bundle (which is $75 instead of $125 for the 4 glasses pairing), "unless I choose to talk to the manager about it". Alternatively, he took off one of our starter wine from the bill, which is some where between $20 and $30. I admit, I was weak, I didn't want to argue this after a special meal with my partner which we both enjoyed. But it turns out, I am still very frustrated two days after the meal, hence this long review. Yes, it's not even $30, but hey, this is also just one out of the hundreds of reviews posted... You admitted you made a mistake, and assuming you know your menu (which you should), you know you are over charging me for $50. You removed a $20 item from the bill and basically told me that my options are either take it or it will get complicated cause I now need to talk to the manager? In any decent restaurant that respect their customer, the manager should already be at the table apologizing for the mistake. Apology if my expectation is high when I go to a place and paying more than $100 in tips... or am I supposed to be grateful that you didn't remove the tea from my bill as compensation instead, which is only $10? If you got this far, or simply skipped my rant above, the food itself is amazing. And I loved the theme. "The Chalet" is very creative, loved it. One of the desserts definitely can bring out the kid in you. So I guess that also means it may not be for everyone. But even if you didn't enjoy the theme, the food is amazing. The lobster cappuccino sounds SOOO weird, but tastes great. And the venison's cooked perfectly. Minus 0.1 cause the desserts are too sweet for my liking. And minus 0.1 cause the first few dishes felt a bit rushed. Thank you for reading.

Yelp
I was looking forward to this restaurant when I first walked in, but unfortunately, we left quite unsatisfied. First, this restaurant seems to pride itself of making a big deal out of every aspect of dining. From the moment you sit down, you are given a few amuse-bouche courses before you order. This included a jerky beef on a plastic tree that had dry ice poured into a small bucket. I didn't find the jerky that great to eat and the whole thing seemed in my personal opinion, a bit gimmicky and dated. The cutlery is placed on frankly ridiculous stands that makes you feel like it is about to fall over at any moment. I had to catch the fork a couple times as the staff hurriedly placed them on the stand between courses. Listening to the staff describe the overly complex items with the enthuthiasm of amusement park staff doing the same routine for the 100th time wasn't great. Everything seemed so forced and not personalized. We told them in advance that it was our anniversary and some of my wifes' food preferences. They had no record of the preferences, and thought it was my birthday instead of an anniversary. As for the food, most of it was fairly good, but really nothing stood out which was very surprising considering the big show they made of everything. The best thing of the night was the croissant and the lobster. Everything else was just ok at best. Its too bad because I think this restaurant 'tries' in some ways to deliver some sort of experience, but the execution is perfunctory and on the verge of bizzare. For the price tag (starting $135/person plus tax tip and then drinks), I really don't recommend going here unless you are into a very elborate and showy dining experience and where the food is secondary.

Yelp
What an experience to do the 8 course meal. Loved the small touches to detail and being creative. Makes this not only for a great meal but fun entertainment. Best restaurant in Montreal I've had so far.

Yelp
I love when a restaurant you've been meaning to go to just blows you away! I've heard much about this place and was finally able to snag a last minute reservation online. However at the end of the meal, we realized they had a regular dining room and a brasserie with a different menu. We unknowingly reserved in the brasserie, however the food was still delicious and beautifully presented. Though it says a "3 course for $89.50", we thought it wasn't alot of food because the price seemed cheap but it came with much more than that. They had many small appetizers or hors-d'oeuvre's included before the courses began. My absolute favorite appy was the truffle lobster cappuccino, it was savory and fragrant from the lobster with a slightly sweet foam. 1. 6 fresh oysters+ Crab claw: the oysters were super fresh and the crab claws were sweet and plump 2. Crispy beef tartare + Poutine with shoestring fries+ Caesar salad: I wasn't a big fan of the tartare however the poutine with shoestring fries was delicious 3. Maple-smoked, roasted breast with crispy skin and prosciutto: The chicken skin was so crisp yet the inside was juicy and flavourful 4. Lobster and beef surf n'turf : Lobster tail cooked and roasted on its shell in a garlic butter gremolata + Alberta Angus Prime filet mignon cooked on hot stone: The lobster was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, the gremolata added great flavor. The fillet mignon was a good quality cut of meat and perfectly cooked as well. 5. Hot and cold crêpe Suzette flambée with vanilla soft serve: I found this to be just okay, good for the show but taste wise not amazing 6. Late night around the fire pit : assortments of several of their desserts: By this time we were too full but sampled each of the cake and pudding jars and they were all delicious We also had the wine pairing and each wine paired beautifully with the course. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone visiting MTL and am definitely reserving in the main dining room on my next visit! Great value for money, presentation, technique and service!

Yelp
The most phenomenal dining experience of my k Long life--exquisite, imaginative, creatively prepared cuisine in a splendid setting! It was like being at and in a theatrical performance. Elegance and excellence personified.

Yelp
Came here for a lunch meeting and let me tell you it's way to overpriced and over rated.... Service is horrible! Finally cought the waiters attention after 10min to Ask for some sparkling water we got it 5 min later and we were ready to order and wanted a quick bite to eat It took us like 25-35 min wait to get just our water and over an hour for a tiny little salad with barely anything in it. -.- the worst part is the waiter came to refill the sparkling water by adding tap water .... nooooo you don't do that.... I expressed to him that it was a big no no to mix sparkling and tap in the same glass and if he wanted to bring tap water he had to bring separate glasses he didn't care and repeated the same offence twice. I was furious! Food: it was pretty good ! Sea bass was amazing and tender .. I really enjoyed it and the salad was fresh but a bit overpriced for its portion However the service is very important and it was horrible and dreadfully long ! I decided not to tip as the waiter really didn't care whatsoever. He was mad that we didn't tip.. I'm like you want a tip? I'll give you a tip .... Be more friendly to your customers and actually act like you care maybe it'll change the outcome of the way people tip!

Yelp
We came for my birthday dinner. We reserved at 8pm. Arrived at 8 and waited in the lounge. We got seated at 9 pm. it's the MTL a table event. So I am guessing waiting one hour is not a regular routine? I never had a dinner this late. Thank God I ate some snack after work or I would be hungry to death. The whole experience was full of surprises. For us finishing dinner at 11:30 pm was a very exhausting experience, especially on a weekday. At the end we were yawning a lot. But still we were so satisfied with food. The menu said 7 courses(83$), but we only received six beforehand we inserted card to the machine. Then I asked about the 7th course. The last dish was a bag of take-home candy. I don't want to describe all the dishes to spoil the surprises for you. In a nut shell, I like all the dishes. Only the oyster was a bit fishy. It's my fifth time with Europea but first time to try this new location. I really need to verify the usual waiting time and be prepared. The surprises and fanciness were upgraded for sure, just the waiting time was abnormal for us.

Yelp
Is it worth it? Yes! I brought my mom to Europea back in October for their anniversary six-course meal. Not to spoil, with all the surprises, it was more like a nine-course meal!!! As for the food, everything was amazing and sort of... whimsical! It is definitely an experience you gotta try once! Like they say, you eat with the eyes. I won't give too much details as the food tastes just so yummy when you're surprised (PS. I have attached photos with no description for those who have a need to know what they are eating prior). The service was impeccable and courteous. The handwritten note by the chef was a really nice touch! TIP. I know it's hard but TRY not to look at the other table. Be delighted by the surprises. Enjoy! Oh and did I mention pre-dessert? :P

Yelp
I have actively saved up money to come here for the taster's menu and was never disappointed. It's an amazing experience!

Yelp
Dinner was wonderful and the experience is really what you pay for. And you really pay for it $$$. The staff in general was great. However, unfortunately we got a not so great waitress... and that ruins it all. She was judgy, unfriendly, kept forgetting to bring a soda (had to ask 3 separate times). And catching her eye to even ask was at least a 10min ask each time... ugh.. brought the wrong menu (language, after specifically asking for the English one), brought the wrong coffee drink and so on and so forth. At the end... it just really brought down our otherwise enthusiasm for the food and everything else the rest of the staff work so hard to bring. (Sigh). The experience was great, the food was great but this really put a damper in the entire experience sadly.

Yelp
We had gotten a tip from good friends who had gone to the old location of this restaurant who had raved about the experience. This meal was certainly an experience and perhaps the only reason it's not a 5 star review is because it was TOO MUCH of an experience. At some point you want the spectacles to stop and you want something yummy. It was like food porn on max. Everything taste great. Everything looked amazing. Every single dish entertained and contributed to the story unfolding. It was like watching a John Wick movie where it was non-stop action. I enjoyed it. I left amused, fed, entertained and overwhelmed. The break upstairs for the surprise of a buffet style cookie bar was a fun concept that we've experienced at other restaurants but the monotony of the goodies was disappointing. Everything was basically the same flavor, texture but a different color. The excitement was over pumped and it fell flat. Overall it's worth the money. It's fun and certainly if you're into instagramming food porn - this is a must. Do it at least once.

Yelp
(Vegetarian Review) As I'm on a personal mission to try every vegetarian tasting menu, I had to stop by Europea when I was in Montreal. We made reservations as a group of 6 and were seated promptly. I thought the meal was reasonably priced (especially compared to SF / NY) for a tasting menu, and there was more than enough food for everyone. Pros (+) Interesting displays: Everything was very unique at the restaurant including the cotton candy tree and goat cheese lollipops. It was definitely a fun experience for the group (+) Vegetarian option: I appreciated having a vegetarian option, and I saw that there was a vegan tasting on the menu as well (+) Relatively inexpensive compared to other tastings (+) Great service ***We also ran into the Europea Mobile food truck the next day which was also good and has more fast-food-esque options. Would recommend trying both!

Yelp
As ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect businesses, it has forced many of us to think differently about what constitutes a disaster. Many business owners are changing their mission statement to succeed and to embrace positive disruptions. I came across Europea on René Levesque et de la Montagne, a strategic location in the heart of downtown Montreal. What used to be just a fancy and prestigious restaurant has now expanded, in addition to takeout and delivery, to a very appealing showroom full of colourful delights. What a pleasure to see all these delicious "mini bouchées", nicely laid out on the shelves. Atmosphere was warm and we were greeted with cookies to taste, hot off the oven. With our purchases, we were offered tokens that you can use to select fancy mini boxes of cookies through a machine dispenser. What a great way to make a powerful statement. A remarkable visionary and an exemplary way to revolutionize the culinary industry.

Yelp
Guess this is Europea's new location. Only a block away from our hotel and boy were we in for some unique experience. We went in for the 12 course meal and it was fantastic. Pricey but worth the experience.

Yelp
I was blown away by this joint for real. The seal tartare is a dish you won't experience anywhere else. This is where take friends if I want to impress them.

Yelp
+.5 for service Number 1 restaurant in Canada. Number 24 restaurant in the world (or something like that). A final bill for 5 that's equivalent to a week's paycheque for many people. That's basically Europea in a nutshell. I was one of the first people to try their new location, which was a lot closer to the central station. The place was extremely open concept with high ceilings. I don't want to explain/spoil too much about the restaurant concept, but there's uniqueness throughout that make the price you pay worth it. Some highlights included the lobster tea, "sea bed myths and legends", "bounty of the land", and the 3-course dessert. I don't wanna explain too much more of what they really are as it will ruin the surprise, but definitely consider ordering items that have any lobster (tea, cappuccino, or bisque) or calamari. I did take away 1 star for how the restaurant is laid out. If you end up getting a corner table (far right area on the main floor), you will have a lack of lighting. Unfortunately my group did get that table, and the lighting paled compared to other sections of the restaurant. Service is tremendous. Like, really tremendous. Probably one of the best services I've ever had in a restaurant, especially given its high standing. I'm not one to judge whether the "#1 restaurant in Canada" claim holds water, but I'm confident in saying it's up there in "expensive restaurants that I would recommend everyone to try once".

Yelp
So we took a Groupon for 2 for lunch. And we had a memorable delicious extravagant and fancy lunch! We had a five-course meal. We paid around 145$ including service and taxes and boy, every bit of it was worth it. Elliot - Our server was a delightful, kind and impressive person. The kind of service and attention to details were spectacular! The food prep and serving was beautiful. Reservations: I took the vegetarian/vegan meal and my hubby chose white meat diet. They take these details while you call for booking and then they call you back to reconfirm your reservations. Food: They shared the pre-fix menu choices for lunch and for me they mentioned all that they have. and then they started to serve. wow! Not only the presentation of the food was unique but the food as well. We started goat cheese and pesto lollipops & popcorns and a choice of wine, the bottled to be shared between two of us and left over was given to take home. We chose white wine and we got again a delicious French wine (Chartier), which is like 20$ in LCBO and then we were served taro/oregano- truffled cappuccino & shrimp cappuccino(Hubby). The side of bread (we had choices) with 3 kinds of butter, I loved the flower butter. The bread was freshly baked and aromatic. Now for the mains, I had Quash/cashew Patty along with a fried roll. So yum! so so so yum! It was smoked and garnished with red quinoa. My hubby chose Foi Gras, he got it along with mushroom shaped breads served in a book box, a fried roll and a smoothie(I wish I was served too). the smoothie was beet/green apple and was delicious. For second mains, I had roots with hummus- delicious, roots were steamed to perfection, to compliment they had served the side of sweet quinoa and salty sauteed mushrooms.Oh so yum! My hubby had some Bass, which was first smoked in the grass and was shown to him for his approval to serve. Now the dessert: Some berry mouse with sorbet- oh so delicious so perfectly sweetened, along with blueberry cotton candy tree and Meringue to share. Then we got a choice of coffee and tea. they served Nespresso coffee along with Tea cakes (In a to-go box, so that you can take the leftovers). Well, It's not over yet. We also received an autograph from the chef, a jar of eggplant caviar, a big Meringue to take home along with tea cakes and wine. It was a memorable and delicious experience! Loved it! Would definitely go back!

Yelp
If you are a fan of perfectly executed multi-course meals, complete with gimmicks and little magic tricks, then this is the place for you. Dining is part of the experience, but certainly not the reason you go here. You go here for a nearly 3 hour meal/show put on by the dedicated waitstaff and sommeliers. There are a lot of elements to the meal with separate ornate services of food and beverage, each with their own separate presentations. Make no mistake about it. You will be dinged REALLY hard in the pocketbook here. They will push the wine pairing option until you feel foolish saying no. There are two options at 75$/person or 150$/person. Both options will get you 4 small pours of various wines/bubbly. My wife and I took the 75$ option, therefore spending 150$ on wine. Adding the 4 mini pours of wine together, I doubt the total exceeds one standard bottle of wine... maybe by a fraction, but no more. Obviously, we should have just ordered a regular bottle of wine and saved ourselves a bunch of money. That said, we fell prey to the dog and pony show which is undoubtedly essential to the restaurant's ability to pay rent on the same block as the Bell Centre. While I believe you can go a la carte, most people choose one of 2 tasting menus. I think ours was the more moderately priced one at 95$/person. The evening starts by having the guests seated in the lounge. It strongly appears that this is their policy whether or not the table is ready. They want you ordering a cocktail, and who wouldn't when the price of said beverage hovers around the 20$ mark. They give you some dried vegetable chips or something akin to that. Magically, after the cocktail is ordered, they announce that the table is ready. (Pssst....hey guys, I would have ordered a drink anyways) The meal starts with some sort of fake tree spewing dry ice. I still don't understand why. Something about a towel to wipe my hands? The tree branches hold two pieces of baked goods that you dip in an off beige sauce. It was pretty tasty. Then comes an amuse bouche of dried fish and some sort of beef balls. Again pretty tasty. Out comes another box with another towel and a note from the chef. Next up, you've got a lobster cappuccino. Basically it's glorified clam chowder with a piece of lobster at the bottom. Two sips and you're done. They do serve delicious croissants and bread with butter which we filled up on. Don't ask me what a croissant is doing at a dinner service, but who am I to argue with a breakfast treat this well prepared? My wife had some sort of lobster tisane and dish that included a broth prepared in a bubbling multi-layered glass science experiment, the type you didn't understand properly in high school, because...who cares. It tasted weird according to m'lady. I had some foie gras which was decent and served in 3 variations Then comes the oyster show. They invite you to put on these goggles and watch a video of an oyster fisherman. Ok...I'll bite. When the video is over, you have a dish of salt water with inedible brown rocks (don't mistake these or you will be visiting the dentist), and ONE oyster. Yeah, they put some stuff in the oyster, but guess what...it tasted like an oyster. Maybe across the street at Old Orchard, they can show you a video of a chicken farm and then present you with a single chicken wing. For our mains, my wife had this intricate fish dish, while I had the beef which was essentially 3 ounces of filet, about a tablespoon of tartare (served on a giant rock), and literally a single TEASPOON of braised brisket that had undergone some mythical and magical treatment earlier in the afternoon (i.e. they cooked it) At this point, they give you a piece of white paper and a paintbrush with water to dip. They tell you to paint. Essentially, another note from the chef is revealed. They are basically telling you that a roasted marshmallow in forthcoming. Each diner gets one marshmallow to cook over a gas flame. It was good. The part I really liked was the chocolate and cream filled cigar which accompanied the dessert. They finish the meal with a mountain of maple cotton candy and a clay pot that you smash with an actual hammer to get to some honeycomb toffee chunks like the inside of a Crunchy bar. Together with the cotton candy, I really think they must have a side deal with a dental clinic. What am I, 11 years old? For the fifth dessert, they serve some sort of pretty plated arrangement which i think tasted like blueberry. As a nice touch, when you are paying the bill, they give you a loaf of orange bread "for breakfast tomorrow" in a Jerome Ferrer bag. A couple of tasting menus, 2 ill advised wine pairings, and a couple of cocktails. Tax and tip.....over 500$. The orange loaf the next morning was great. Also, we did have fun throughout. Ultimately, however, this place is overpriced, touristy, and the type of thing that I really only need to do once in my life, if that.

Yelp
When they say that this is one of the best restaurants in Montreal and Canada... this is nearly a perfect restaurant in my honest opinion. I have read multiple blogs that Bouillon Bilk was on par with this... no offense I do not think so. I am not dismissing at all Bouillon Bilk because for their food tasting and for the price they have: it's very affordable and well rounded. This restaurant is just on a whole new level of how delicious the food was and for the price you pay for the tasting menu. Food 5/5 Interior/decor 5/5 Service: 3.5/5 Overall: 9/10 The food was nearly perfect. I literally was so surprised and impressed how intricate and artistic each food and presentation was plated for me and my friends. To start off, the appetizers they offer was like 5 in 1 appetizers and they were really good overall with their smoked salmon, seal tartare, beef jerky, cheese ball and scallop and though the food was great to start... the pacing of the appetizer was too rushed almost to the point I couldnt enjoy the appetizers. The main courses were simply delicious and the design was so artistic and beautifully presented The lobster tail was the most impressive out of all of them because of the smoke that they created they placed under the lobster tail and cut the lobster tail into equal portion pieces but placed them together like a puzzle. The supplement veggie lobster chowder soup with the claw was also amazing. The duck, oyster, and the king crab were so well presented and delicious overall as well. The dessert, cotton candy and the candy run where the waiter brings you to another area of restaurant to run around the candy shop to pick your candy choices. Almost reminds me of being a young child getting free candy at their own will and pace. The desserts were so delicious and very unique in their own ways they made it and presented. Very good on their part. However, as good as the food was, there were some minor flaws they need to improve if they wanna elevate their restaurant status. The cheese was delicious of the chefs choice, but the waiter/waitress need to be upfront about the price: they were instead rushing and wanted us to have it without informing that it is extra charge. Two, their service was subpar in their skill set. They are very polite, but we have asked twice for English menu and they gave us the French menu (which we can't read). Also, every time they pour water, it kept splashing or spilling over multiple times. They also knocked over our utensils multiple times and were not placing the plate of food nicely to our seating position at times. It was very inconsistent and it is a shame because the food and decor was good. They seriously can improve more if they want to be the best in Montreal. Overall, I highly highly recommend for anyone who come to Montreal to check this place out and the price is very affordable.

Yelp
We went with the special of the night for 125 CAD and did not regret it. With only a weekend to spare in Montreal, we decided that a 3.5 hour meal with Jerome Ferrer would be the best way to spend an evening. The experience was immersive, involving touch, smell, and sight - highlights were: - the smell of active charcoal burning under our lobster tails, evoking beachside grilling - taking a fishing trip with Jerome Ferrer with Oculus goggles paired with an oyster dish - a chocolate rolled cigar and a shot of whiskey infused chocolate - the whimsical colors of a maple-flavored cotton candy tree and gin cocktail (as the server shakes up your cocktails, you listen to bongo drum beats) - the lobster cappuccino (his signature!) - a delicate white fish steamed on a bed of citrus fruits and paired with an egg-based tarragon sauvignon sauce Jerome Ferrer and his team of chefs and servers deliver a dining experience that engages all five of your senses - recommend if you're looking for something memorable, different, and of course, delicious.

Yelp
If you're in Montreal and you don't eat here you are doing yourself a great disservice. I work in restaurants and I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the best meal I've ever had. You will spend a lot but it's the experience of a lifetime.

Yelp
My girlfriend took me here for my birthday dinner on a long weekend trip to Montréal. Let's just say, our experience was so amazing that we would do a day trip (from Buffalo) to eat here. If I could leave 6 stars I would. Jérôme Ferrer was one of the best meals I've experienced in my lifetime. We went with the 12 course Experience. Definitely worth the price! When signing up for this option, you are signing up for not only for superb food but a superb performance. Our experience started with enjoying two martinis along with complimentary truffle Parmesan popcorn in the lounge area. From there, our bartender walked us to our table where our experience began. Our 12 courses also included an interactive VR journey to where our oysters were caught, along with an audio musical soundtrack to the presentation of one of dessert courses. The server was completely unbelievable, even gifting me one of the chefs cookbooks as a birthday gift. What really put our meal over the top was upon looking into the open kitchen. One of the servers noticed me and my girlfriend intrigued with the kitchen. He insisted on giving us a tour, allowing us to even shake hands with the chef. This has never happened to us and really left us with an unforgettable experience. This restaurant made you feel special. Between meeting the chef, eating the superb food, watching the show that came with each course, and the amazing hospitality, it will leave you wanting more, even after sitting down for a 3.5 hour meal. We will definitely be back soon and look forward to doing it all over again.

Yelp
I admit that this was the fanciest most expensive meal thus far of my 30 years. And NO regrets because it was exquisitely delicious!!! When you order the 6-course meal, you actually will be getting much more than that, since between those courses they give you about 6 other "treats." The courses with options I would recommend the calamari or foie gras. And I would recommend the veal, Cornish hen and the halibut sea bass which all tender, succulent/moist and flavorful. Really, there's no going wrong in the end. Oh and there's a lot of dessert at the end of the meal... so prepare for that!

Yelp
Every year, if I am lucky, I encounter a restaurant that offers a truly memorable experience. Europea was that restaurant for me in 2016, so much so that I intend to omit some details of our experience so that it is a surprising treat for you, as well. I will leave you with this sentiment: the meal is an enchanting performance so sit back and take joy in it. I reserved well in advance, more than 8 weeks out, resulting in a lovely table by the window on the second floor overlooking the city street; during the summer, I would imagine that the area would come alive. As we reviewed the menu, we enjoyed a robust and tasty beef jerky, flavored popcorn, goat cheese lollipops, and herbed straws served in olive oil. They were an unexpected and delightful way to begin a meal filled with surprises. These little treats definitely set the right mood. In the end, we selected the 12-course tasting menu and were pleased with the decision. Note that a six-course table d'hôte and an à la carte menu are also available. Below are some of the items we enjoyed: - Arancini created to look like a truffle - Velvety lobster bisque with a cappuccino-like foam finish - so good I could have made a meal of it - Smoked lentil caviar in a crispy crust (a substitute for my salmon allergy) - Risotto with baby shrimp and beets - Calamari tagliatelle served with a quail egg and a creamy sauce, reminiscent of a carbonara - this was my sister's favorite - Pâté au torchon served with a tiny brioche - A well-prepared sea bass that was cooked in sweet hay and assorted citrus aromatics - this was my favorite - Cornish game hen cooked in breakable clay that was, unfortunately, a bit dry - Clever taste of braised beef layered with béarnaise and potatoes - A cheese tray that took into account our preferences, from a cellar of over 100 choices from Quebec - A wonderful assortment of sweet treats that begged for us to take home leftovers Throughout the 4-hour meal, the servers were energetic and playful. We thoroughly enjoyed the well-paced, thoughtfully-composed indulgences and appreciated how much the servers were very much a part of the overall experience. This meal has provided many lovely memories already so I encourage you to GO. Relish every moment of the experience.

Yelp
EUROPEA was my favorite French restaurant in Montreal. I used to go there a lot when they were in the old location, and I really liked the dishes they used to have. The fois gras, the lobster cappuccino, the steak, the cheese lollipop, the scallop risotto.... They were so special and tasty. However, I went to the new location for lunch a couple days ago, it really disappointed me. The price went down, the quality of dishes went down as well. We had fois gras, scallops and braised beef. The fois gras wasn't as good as the old one, the scallop was tasteless, the braised beef was horrible, which was dry, boring and I couldn't even finish. I asked the waiter why they changed the lunch menu, he told me that some customers told them: former lunch dishes take a lot of time to wait, so they make something faster now. I understand that, but I don't think 35 dollars for dishes like that is worth. I'd rather spend more money and more time to have a decent dish, not something cheap like a group meal (especially the braised beef). Also, the service wasn't as warm as before, there were just a few waiters there, sometimes you can't even get the attention from them. I know my comment can't changed anything, but I hope the restaurant could consider my advise. PLEASE DON'T MAKE CHEAP DISHES like that, people go there don't mind to spending extra 25 dollars or even more dollars for something decent. Btw, I didn't try the dinner menu, hope they're better than lunch.

Yelp
This was such an amazing restaurant in terms of experience and food from the beginning to the end of the meal. The lobster bisque, calamari, and steak were great. All of the courses were pretty good. The way the food was presented was quirky which I liked. The dessert came with cotton candy and candy bags hanging from a tree which was cute. I would definitely come back here when visiting Montreal again.

Yelp
Spent my birthday there , everyone was so nice !!5 stars service and amazing food presentation!!! As a true New Yorker and used to live in Tokyo, being spoiled by quality of food is normal, among those Michelin starred in New York, Tokyo, Chicago, San Francisco , the food presentation of this restaurant amazed me ! Each dish came with all surprises !!! To be honest , Dishes from chef was amazing , however when it comes to main dishes , they are Good , I will give 4 of 5 stars, taste is very personal , just like I will not like all dishes even from one of my fav Michelin starred restaurant anyway. I will definitely come back for other dishes on the menu!!!!

Yelp
It's upscale, it's expensive but is it worth the hype? Short answer is yes, long answer is that it depends on your expectations. We had the menu de degustation and it was fantastic! The service is just impeccable and the food is what you would expect from an upscale French restaurant. A go-to place for a business meeting or a celebration. If the price isn't a problem, this place should definitely be on your go-to list. However if it's not, then it's not someplace that you will regret missing, there are many budget-friendlier restaurants out there just as good.

Yelp
Great experience here for a birthday dinner during a long weekend in Montreal. My boyfriend and I both got the signature tasting menu, which was a steal for $130 CAD. There are 10 courses listed, but we also received several amuse bouches (I think at least 4) and an extra dessert . Presentation of everything was fantastic, as many others have noted. I loved how many of the dishes were slightly interactive, such as having to smash open the clay pot that the veal was braised in or having a smoked salmon amuse literally being served inside smoke. Service was also lovely, a stark contrast to another dinner that we'd had a few nights prior. However, will note that the pacing of the meal was quite leisurely (think our dinner took over 3 hours - I've had 20 course meals take that long), so don't come here if you're in a rush. Only ding is that I wish some of the flavor and preparation of the dishes was able to match the high caliber of presentation. While everything was impeccably prepared, the actual taste of a majority of the dishes just didn't have that same wow factor. Also - must try the sortilege cocktail! It was so yummy, and came with a piece of maple candy that slowly melted as you sipped on the drink as well.

Yelp
Amazing dinner! I was late as I thought my dinner was at 830 but it was 7, yikes. They accommodate me. I picked the surf and turf 7 course meal dinner special and it was amazing! Try it and experience the service, food and beverages.

Yelp
Wish I could give it 5 stars, but I can't. Deserves 4.5. Food was overall very good (we took the 10-course meal with assorted wine) but there were a few misses, which at that price you don't expect. The mixed appetizers were ok, but not spectacular and they all came at the same time which was overwhelming. The grilled foie gras and cappuccino-lobster bisque were the best I ever had, by far (and I don't like coffee).
