Michel - Brasserie des Catalans

"Soak up the atmosphere of Marseille in this popular restaurant on the Plage des Catalans. Here they take their bouillabaisse very seriously... and it tastes phenomenal! As you would expect, the menu proposes an exceptionally fresh catch of the day: you will see the fish in the tanks as you come in." - Michelin Inspector

The 21 Essential Marseille Restaurants

"Bouillabaisse, the fish stew made with locally caught rockfish, potatoes, tomatoes, saffron, and other ingredients, is arguably the dish that Marseille is most famous for. You’ll find it on menus all over town, but this family-run restaurant, in business since 1946, is where the locals come. Here it’s served as a two-course meal — first the rich brick-colored fish soup with croutons and garnishes of aioli and rouille, and then a platter of the fish and shellfish that have been cooked in the soup. Service can be a bit stiff, but the bouillabaisse always delivers." - Alexander Lobrano

This place is full of history and tradition. It’s defiantly a place you go to, to honour that and the prices of thee food reflect that. I probably had the freshest fish of my life there with the most interesting combinations. The starter was also heavenly and the service was really good and took their time to make you feel at the centre of the service. The atmosphere reflects the tearoom and history of the restaurant and is pleasant, conducive to good conversations and sharing of food amongst friends. Their wine selection is fantastic and I recommend any of the rosé wines from Provence that they have on offer.

This is one of those 'you gotta do it once in your life' kind of experiences. It is supposed to be the best most authentic bouillabaisse in the world. I can't speak to that being the first time I've ever had it. But is it worth the 80 Euros they charge? No. Is it the best food I've ever had? No. Would I go back? No. But...I'm glad I went and if I wanted to give someone an experience in Marseille they won't forget, I would absolutely come back for that. But if you're just looking for the best food you can get in Marseille, I would go elsewhere.

Well. For a bouillabez lover this is a paradise. This place is full of history and tradition is a key. The owner is super friendly and all the staff is completing a picturesque restaurant in Marseilles. Not a lot of choices but hey... who need choices with this amazing soup.

Google
Long established & classy restaurant for bouillabaisse (famous fish soup from Marseille) if you don’t mind the price 🐟🐋🐠Battalion suggestion: provide options of smaller portions at lower prices

Google
The best of best fish you can ever have Amazing quality and good fast service I think 80 eu is too much for this portion but quality wise that make sense I forgot to take pictures but as they only have one dish you can definitely check the photos Highly recommended if you love sea food otherwise the fishy smell will hurt you for sure

When you go "Chez Michel" you enter in one of the most iconic restaurant in Marseille. There are simply 2 starters (fish soup and fried squids) and 3 main dishes (Boulliabaisse, Bourride and catch of the day). Everything is really good and the fish is ultra fresh. For sure the best Bouillabaisse in Marseille, which is The regional dish.

Google
The Place to be for the best bouillabaisse in the traditional and original way. Delicious, great service, a little old fashioned interior however interesting and authentic atmosphere.

Google
Such an amazing experience! That was my first time having Bouillabaisse and Michel made it incredible. The food is just delicious, great service in an historical place. Keep in mind that it's an expensive dinner but totally worth it.

Yelp
I would have to say that after tonight I must say that this is the 1st true bouillabaisse I have eaten. Epic. 7 types of fish.. cooked to order... add the croutons with either garlic aioli or peppers and let them float You can order some fish grilled but you can do that anywhere ... order the bouillabaisse an enjoy life

Yelp
Fantastic food and atmosphere. Classic bouillabaisse and super fresh fish. It is a classic French dining experience.

Yelp
Essential. Worth every penny. Don't listen to any review saying the staff are cold or unkind; my dining companion is a vegetarian and was content to keep me company while I ate and the host--without prompt or preamble--delivered a wonderful potato dish for her so she could eat something as well, completely on the house. Exceptional eating I'll remember forever.

Yelp

Yelp
Most famous for their bouillabaisse-seafood soup of marseille. Rich tomato fish based soup served w baguette and croutons. Super fresh and savory and the service is impeccable. A must try if you are in the area. Make sure to reserve ahead since they dont accept walk ins.

Yelp
Best bouillabaisse ever! Nothing else to say! If you go to Marseille, you have to go to this place! I had the opportunity to try other restaurants, but nothing beats this place! It is expensive, right, but it's worthy. The service is not too fast, you can take your time and enjoy slowly. High quality service, very polite. The restaurant has 40 servings only. The atmosphere is good, relaxing. You can also enjoy the beach view by the window. The place is also well-known by celebrities. Tips : don't eat anything at all (or anything too heavy) before, or drink too much, otherwise you won't be able to finish the meal. They don't have kids meals, and in my opinion, it's too bad if you go with kids who cannot really enjoy it.

Yelp
horrible. cold tasteless broth with bland white fish and overcooked boiled potatoes. only flavor was mayonnaise with garlic. run away fro this restaurant

Yelp
The bouillabaisse is very good, with delicious broth, fresh fish and yummy (therefore super high in cholesterol) aïoli and rouille. But is it worth the price difference with Fonfon (€75 vs €50), and having to put up with nonchalant, rude waiters even if they're dressed in white?

Matthias H.

Yelp
Let's be explicit: It's a tourist trap! I am sorry. Food is good but you get overfished and it is definitely way overpriced. I have had better Bouillabaisse at a fraction (75 EUR) and that's the problem with this place. Value for money is way off but they manage to portrait a 'look which celebrity dined here some 15 years ago' hype!

Yelp
Good bouillabaisse but really poor service. I can't say it's a one-star Michelin restaurant.

Yelp
This is a very difficult place to be reviewed. It should technically be a 4 stars, but because of the price and the fact that it has a michelin star (unjustifiable) I lowered its rating to 3 stars. Marseille is more or less divided among two factions: from one side there is Chez Fonfon, from the other one Chez Michel. Both serves bouillabaisse, and it must be said both of them are delicious. And different. So in the end I will already conclude this battle with a prosaic "they are different, it really depends on your personal taste". Chez Michel propose a bouillabaisse (don-t bother to eat anything else, just take it!) with a much stronger and spicy broth. The fish is of course very fresh, and the fact that they are showing it to you before cooking it is a nice addiction to the dish. So while the food is actually good (4 stars) even if pretty expensive (ours was 75 € per person) the environment and the service is what drags the rating low here. This is definitely the place that just "tries too much", with the white jackets for the waiters and the old-style silverware. But if you want to go for that kind of restaurant, dirty windows, old tablecloths and rude waiters is something that you really want to avoid. Oh and the pizzeria style plastic menus with pen correction, seriously? are you joking? I'm sorry but this is something unacceptable in a 1 star michelin restaurant, and it what it drags the rating of this place down. A pity.

Yelp
Friendly people and really good taste. The restaurant is old fashion, the waiters are wearing uniform which could only be seen in old movie. Worth to go and strongly recommending.

Yelp
While the bouillabaisse was delicious (4 stars) the service should have gotten negative stars (-3) to average at 1 star. Owner and wait staff were rude and condescending. They completely ignored us for nearly the entirety of our time there while it was very clear they were helping others. The continually asked others if everything was okay and kept their backs turned to us to avoid looking in our direction. While we had to ask for everything (water, bouillabaisse refills, wine, food, bill, etc...) they brought it to the tables next to us without them ever asking. Our bus boy was the one exception, however he was also inexperienced and hesitant.
