"Retreat is a corner neighborhood nook to grab a macchiato and work when you need to be surrounded by activity. People are always coming in and out of here, and there’s also an outdoor patio overlooking Green Lake. Not to mention that you could also drink cocktails and eat upscale bar snacks like burrata or braised short ribs. Your go-to sidewalk espresso hut definitely doesn’t have that. The best part is that if you need a break, there’s a three-mile lakeside walk just outside the door." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley
"This place is *very* Green Lake, by which we mean there’s an extensive selection of “wellness lattes” and smoothies. But it also has coffee, pastries, and ample seating, along with a menu of bowls, toasts, and sandwiches (you better believe there’s a lot of vegan and gluten-free options). And while we’re not saying you should drink while working, the cocktails and wine here are affordable, with some at only $10. From 4 to 6 p.m. there’s a happy hour that knocks another $2 off those prices." - Harry Cheadle
"Retreat is your classic “wellness” type cafe where you can get smoothies, hot concoctions of turmeric or ginger, and bowls with sweet potato and a bunch of other stuff. There’s also coffee, wine, and cocktails for those moments when wellness means a bit of caffeine or alcohol. It’s worth a visit because it’s a comfortable place to work or just kind of hang out for a long period of time, and because the food is often surprisingly flavorful (“wellness” can sometimes denote a grim slog through quinoa). It’s also (surprisingly?) not all that expensive, with lunch dishes topping out at $20." - Harry Cheadle
"Retreat is a great place to grab some coffee and breakfast after a morning lap around the lake. They also serve wine and beer if Happy Hour is more appropriate for you post-workout. Come in here if you need a bright place to work alongside some avocado toast and a latte." - aimee rizzo
"If you’re trying to spend as much time outside as possible before the weather gets nasty, Green Lake is probably where you want to be. Thus, Retreat should be one of your most frequented coffee shops for hanging out at one of their handful of patio tables. From smoothies to cocktails, this cafe is great if you don’t necessarily want a cup of coffee. And if you do, their espresso drinks are terrific." - aimee rizzo
