"James Beard-recognized chef Gino Rojas and the Revolver Taco team expanded into a gastro cantina in Deep Ellum. It offers a mix of its taco menu and the fancier dishes on the tasting menu at the Purepecha Room. Order one of the signature tacos, the pulpo pastor, which features a full octopus tentacle wrapped in homemade masa tortillas. The pato (duck breast) is also stellar, but go for more traditional carne asada, carnitas, or el pastor taco, if you must. The vibe is relaxed, with counter service only, and on weekends, it hosts a buffet-style all-you-can-eat brunch." - Courtney E. Smith
"A night at Purepecha means finding the almost-hidden door at Revolver Taco Lounge (pictured) between rowdy bars in Deep Ellum, walking into the kitchen, and sitting at a communal table for a few hours. Warm corn tortillas and hand-ground salsa molcajeteada start things off homestyle, but rather than a family meal, you’re in for a seven-course, artfully plated tasting menu that highlights the traditions of Michoacán for $180. (There’s a $120 four-course option in the front room, but we’d recommend going for the big one.) You’ll get small plates like the beautifully layered Crudo That Wants To Be Ceviche, where citrus and slices of fish are topped with seagrass and roe. The pinnacle of dinner is corundas, an iconic Michoacán dish of marigold-studded tamal sacred to the indigenous Purepecha people. The lights go down as you eat it by candlelight, and the pork guisado underneath is so good it’s almost spiritual." - Rosin Saez
"The wonderful tacos here haven’t changed a bit. Stop in for fresh-made wagyu steak, duck breast, and whatever tacos the Rojas family cooks on any given day. And the Sunday brunch served buffet-style is not to be missed, and includes outdoor service in the brightly decorated pass through between streets." - Courtney E. Smith
"Regino Rojas of Purépecha was a semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas." - Courtney E. Smith
"Revolver is a great spot to push the boundaries of what you order in your taco. These tacos are a work of art, from duck breast to scallops to wagyu. If you’re feeling like a taco splurge, book a tasting menu night at Purepecha and take a tour of what tacos can really do." - Courtney E. Smith
