The 18 Best Restaurants In East Passyunk

"Ricci’s has been in Passyunk Square since the 1920s, and they’ve spent the last century perfecting their hoagies. The small counter-service spot is where you can get a stacked hoagie full of things like smoked turkey, corned beef, and salty ham for under $10. The bread here is perfect for piling on lots of toppings and still holding the weight of a very meaty sandwich. Grab the Old Fashioned Italian and make all your coworkers jealous." - alison kessler, candis mclean

Google
AN INSTITUTION. Finally made my way here after two years living in Philly. I had the regular Italian and it was prettyyyyyy dang good. I’d also like to call out the fantastic service. Everyone was very pleasant even though they were very busy. Fast too! Will be stopping by again soon.

Google
Ricci’s Hoagies certainly lives up to the hype! I’ve heard great things about this place and as a South Philadelphian I had to make sure to try it out finally! I got there about 30 minutes before closing and they only had a handful of hoagies left so make sure you get there before they run out! Luckily I managed to get one and I am sure glad I did. It was genuinely the best hoagie I have had here in Philly. I got the Italian and it was phenomenal. I love how thin they slice their meat, cheese, and veggie toppings. I got mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and oregano on mine. Everything is layered onto the hoagie roll perfectly (which is also delicious) to get the perfect bite each time. They have a large selection of chips and drinks to choose from as well. Service and ordering process was quick and easy. Staff is friendly. I took my hoagie into a Phillies game last night at Citizens Bank Park and enjoyed it there. The hoagie held up pretty well I’d say for being in the fridge for 3 hours after initially getting it and then being put into a bag. You know it’s THAT good if it can withstand the test of time and some traveling and still be so delicious! Easy to say I’ll definitely be back for more hoagies here, absolutely incredible.

James Buterbaugh

Google
Definitely a good bogie. They don’t skim the toppings and ingredients. I went with cash as I looked ahead of time to see how they accept payment. But if you’re wondering and reading this. They accept cards as well. It all seemed fresh.

Google
Best Hoagies in Philly. Ricci’s south Philly. Liscio’s rolls. I prefer seed usually. I do the peppered ham and american cheese. They knock it out quickly. Sometimes the line is out the door but its well worth the wait. I was in and out today. Thanks!

Google
An italian-us-american PHILLY HOAGIE DREAM COME TRUE!!! every munch was exquisite. I traveled all the way from Berlin, Germany for this bite and I was not disappointed. I had the old fashioned Italian and put some crisps in there too. Perfect!! Yummy, fresh and HUGE 😁 also kind people, sweet smiles and lots of locals around...

Mark Nave

Google
You want an old school feel hoagie shop, where the meat and cheese is sliced to order and the hoagie is fresh? Then you have the right place with this South Philly gem!! One of the best if not the best hoagies in the city!! You're a tourist? Put this on the list? Live in Philly? Check it out!! Ricci's is definitely a winner!!

Taylor Kraus

Google
Always super friendly, and their hoagies are incredibly good. I love a classic turkey and sharp provolone but their Italian hoagies are also delicious. They use Liscio’s bread so they’re not messing around. Love this place.

Elle

Google
Neighborhood staple! A must have when I visit home. Every time I walk in it smells the same! Fresh veggies and fresh deli meat! Been seeing those smiling faces for years! Love the attitude those guys have! Assortment of chips, drinks and snacks. You can even get fresh bread!

Yelp
Great hoagie but $18 is insane. Idk what the margins are on hoagies but this is a classic no frills south Philly hoagie shop so idk what's going on. I kind of get a ribeye cheesesteak costing $18 nowadays because of the cost of steak but not a cold cuts.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
Awesome hoagie, fresh ingredients- freshly sliced Italian meats, crumbled sharp provolone and roasted red peppers. Spot on all around! Staff was friendly and service was quick.

Yelp
Always on the hunt for a solid sandwich joint and this really fit the bill. It's a bit overwhelming as I wasn't totally sure how the menu worked. Ultimately went with the Old-Fashioned, which comes with prosciutto and soppressata. There's a cheese on it that's also great. It's a TON of meat. Wasn't too sure what else to put on it as I'm not a mayo-fan, but went with tomato, lettuce, olive oil/vinegar, and oregano. It's a decent hoagie. Definitely enough food for two meals. When I got there, the line was manageable, maybe 10 minutes, but when I left it was much longer. It's definitely a skosh more expensive than I would expect (hoagie + soda was around $18). Service was super friendly and people were definitely asking questions, which eased any anxiety I had about asking for suggestions. Plenty of parking in the area so overall a pretty accessible place. No seating so definitely a lunch grab and go kind of place.

Brandon E.

Yelp
The wife and I went there to grab the Italian hoagie. Smiles and friendly hellos when we walked through the door great vibes and were aimed to please. Excellent bread and fresh sliced meats dressed in all piled high delicious I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't say enough about Ricci's. This place is one of my favorites in Philly! I'd give this ten stars if I could, and I wish I could give the owner a high five haha. The food is absolutely delicious, some of the best sandwiches I've ever had, hoagie or not. Extra vinegar and oil is the way to go. The people in here are fast, and they make you laugh. Everything moves pretty fast paced in here, and the environment is good. Everyone seems to be in a good mood at Ricci's, and I can only imagine why... they're getting a great meal!
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
There are hoagie places, and then there is Ricci's! Nothing beats a fresh cut hoagie. I've eaten hoagies all over the city and this place has them all beat hands down. Get the old Italian. It was amazing.
google avatar

Natalya D.

Yelp
Really fast, really good and really authentic. The hoagies speak for themselves! Go check it out. Service was fast and great. There's no indoor seating so take it to your hotel, your home, or a park!

Braelynn H.

Yelp
I loved everything about Ricci's. Service is quick and the workers are friendly. There is no seating as it is a no frills, classic deli. The hoagie bread to meat ratio was perfect. Only complaint is that I wish they were open later. I can't wait to come back the next time I am in Philly. I would highly recommend Ricci's to others. 20/10!
google avatar

Mark K.

Yelp
I have been going to Ricci's for years and I have never had a bad hoagie. They really load on the deli meat, topping and anything you want. This place has no seating and it's standing room to wait in line only. So, it's get in get what you want and get out so others can do the same. I personally love the thin sliced prosciutto with sharp provolone with an unseeded roll. I can't write much more then this because it's just amazing, simple hoagies
google avatar

Olga K.

Yelp
My husband and I have quickly become regulars at this place. We usually grab turkey hoagies or buffalo chicken hoagies. It's TRULY AUTHENTIC! The folks who work here are very nice. It is a great neighborhood family spot! We are huge fans!
google avatar

Han L.

Yelp
Nice workers, so fresh. I wish all sandwiches were made like this. The classic italian was bomb. Definitely go here.
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
very nice staff ! the bread was super fresh and delicious. size of the hoagie for the price point was good.

Yelp
3.5 We had a tray of hoagies delivered to an event I attended. One of the hosts is a local South Philly girl, and she raved that this place was the best around. The tray came with a mix of different hoagies, from chicken cutlets to turkey to Italian. I thought the bread was okay, a little dry. I didn't get a chance to try the chicken cutlets one, but I did try the others and they were nice. Were they any better than any other kind of hoagie that this city is so famous for? I don't know. They were good, just not the kind that was so memorable that the name of this place would be embedded in my memory to recommend if someone asked me for the best hoagie in town.
google avatar

Mona G.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for a great hoagie! Always fresh bread and meats. You're always greeted with a pleasant hello and smile...,
google avatar

Yelp
Rapid service. Fresh, top quality ingredients and personal service. Note this is all takeout and custom made fresh. Enjoy.

Yelp
Love this place. Best Italian hoagie I've had in the city - packed with meats and toppings, tons of flavors that go together perfectly, awesome seeded roll. Atmosphere inside is second to none - everything is sliced fresh, staff talks you through the order, great local feel. Looking forward to making my way through the menu and trying all the different sandwiches (or maybe just enjoying the old fashioned Italian)! Easy 5/5

Veronica H.

Yelp
Order called in and not ready. Went to location in Fairmount. Taste of hoagie good but hardly any meat or stuffing in the bread. Disappointed due to reviews given on social media. Think the OG location might hold to higher standards. Can't complete with other hoagies in Philly area to for price.
google avatar

Joseph I.

Yelp
Simply the best Italian Hoagie in the city of Philadelphia!! Sharp provolone & prosciutto!!
google avatar

Nini N.

Yelp
These hoagies are definitely worth the hype! Pretty casual, unassuming store-- but you'll see a crowd of people. Service is fast, though you will have to wait in a line to be served! They slice all of the deli meat in front of you & you can taste how fresh the ingredients are. Super simple food but done so well.

Lamont W.

Yelp
Ricc's is and oldie but a goodies. consistently" All across the broad from food to attitude. The vibe is as philly as it can get. Which is cool but fast. If you want a great hoagie. Give this oldie but goodies a go!!
google avatar

Bryant G.

Yelp
Best hoagies in Philadelphia. Hands down. Parking is a bear, and it's always crowded, which is a good sign in Philly.
google avatar

Jj M.

Yelp
A real slice of South Philly. Very good hoagies, made fresh as you watch. Often meet some characters in line. They are quick & efficient.
google avatar

Roberta T.

Yelp
My husband saw a guy on YouTube trying food in Philly. The guy went to Ricci's and got an old fashion Italian hoagie. They slice the meats fresh right in front of you. The people working there are so nice. I drove an hour plus to get this so my husband could try one and it did not disappoint. It was worth the trip, the bread, the meat, the people... it was all worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
I had not been in Ricci's for awhile but it had always been one of my favorite spots for a hoagie. I went there on Wednesday expecting the same as I had gotten in the past. First of all when I walked in there were two lines. One had no one in line and the other had about 5 people. I asked what was the difference and no one seemed to know. So I went to the empty one and ordered my sandwich. It was the worst I had ever eaten period. I could not eat it. It was terrible. I was extremely surprised. I would not recommend Ricci's to anyone. There may be something going on that I was not aware of but never again. I live to far away from there to take that chance and spend my money.

Yelp
So whenever i am living in Philly for any xtended period of time i find a good hoagie spot to be my go to for my regular orders and i make it a place that isn't too overly popular or has lines down the block, I just want somewhere i can go get a good quality sandwich with good ingredients and get in and out without too much hassle with reasonable prices. That's what Ricci's is to me and it's like a 15 minute walk from my house, my only complaint is maybe that I wish they were open later. I get a variety of sandwiches there my favorites being the italian tuna with cheese, old fashion italian, and honey turkey but everything is really good there and I plan on ordering almost everything at some point although the italian tuna which is so good and so rare to find is hard not for me to get. The premium tuna they use combined with cooper sharp cheese roasted red peppers and hot peppers is just such refreshing and fulfilling combo especially on a hot summer day. And the Luccio's bread is a great bonus i love the light and fluffy roll they make i prefer the seeded one and it's just a great taste of Philly like I said u can't just find anywhere. The shop is big, bright, clean and the lines move quick. Staff is cool and it's a lot of the same faces behind the counter you have seen for years. A true Philly landmark.

Yelp
So I was craving some hoagies and seeing how I live in California I logged on to Goldbelly and found this place. I saw that they have been in business since 1920 so I knew they had to be good. I placed an order for 2 hoagies. I got the Punisher and the old fashioned. And let me tell you, OMG!!! Were they delish. Came with all the toppings bagged separately. And don't get me started on the bread. It was so incredibly soft and chewy. I am MOST definitely going to order from them again.
google avatar

Justus J.

Yelp
Simply put, amazing. I've been to Ricci's at least five time sense moving from NY to Philadelphia. There is NO COMPETITION. Ricci's is the Chick-fil-A of hoagies! Each hoagie begins with the softest & freshest bread I've ever had from a sub shop. You have several options for cheese and meats to fill your perfect sandwich. I recently had the Buffalo chicken with pepper jack cheese. Topped with banana peppers, pickles, sweet peppers, salt, pepper, oil, tomatoes, and red hot flakes. They also don't skimp on providing quality and quantity. Accompanied with a bag of chips! *chefs kiss * I've brought friends here and they all have the same positive reaction. The staff here are so polite and helpful. You can feel their good energy in the food and they serve you with smile. I'd recommend them every time to anyone seeking a filling meal.
google avatar

Yelp
My go to spot for hoagies in Philly. I've tried a few other place around south Philly and this is the best one imo. The people are always welcoming and friendly. I order the classic Italian hoagie every time and they are very generous with the hoagie. There can be a wait during rush hour and often times it is hard to find parking around the area. My cousin is from LA and I brought her here once, she loved it. Highly reckoned trying this place out!
google avatar

Pete L.

Yelp
Absolutely the best hoagie in the city!! Always wanted to try this spot and it was a must after watching JL jupiter's Youtube video. Turkey and Italian hoagies are perfect. Bread was just right. Always a line but it movies really fast. Friendly staff. You can call for pick up orders too.

Yelp
I always want an American hoagie when I get home from a trip and I decided to order from somewhere new to me this time. I found Ricci's on GH (sorry, I needed delivery after a tiring red-eye flight!) and they had an American hoagie. A lot of Philly sandwich shops skip the American and it's heartbreaking to me because it's my favorite hoagie -- you can probably ask for a ham, salami, and cheese hoagie anywhere (if the shop has cheese other than provolone) but I'm old fashioned and just want to push the button on my phone that says American rather than calling and getting "special" with my order. Anyway, Ricci's had the option but no real description, etc. so I rolled the dice. Threw on a side of macaroni salad. It arrived quickly -- I think shorter than the 1-hour delivery timeframe (good sign if a hoagie shop seems slammed for lunch on a Tuesday, I guess). This American is delicious and probably one of my favorites in the city! Most American hoagies taste the same, but in this case the roll is HUGE and the sandwich isn't falling apart as I eat it. I also am enjoying the spices -- flavor -- added to it. I usually say no oregano but in this case with some red pepper flakes (?) and other spices mixed in, it all works and isn't overpowering. The sandwich has all the classic fixings -- salami, ham, a healthy serving of American cheese, mayo, oil/vinegar (?), the spices, lettuce, tomato, and onion, and even some pickles. It's very well balanced -- not all lettuce like some places, not sloppy with tomato, and the onion isn't overpowering me. I do like me a gooey sandwich so I added more mayo after a few bites, but overall it was solid by itself. I would absolutely recommend and might have found my go to homecoming hoagie shop in South Philly!

Yelp
Ricci's Hoagies is an iconic and long established neighborhood institution in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ricci's has been in business since 1920 and any business that can not only survive, but flourish after hitting a century mark, has to be doing something right. Hoagies ate a Philadelphia staple and definitely a food of the working man. A hoagie allows someone to eat something substantial in a quick an efficient manner. You don't have to worry about a fork and knife to help you in eating it. I heard somewhere that a sandwich was a favorite amongst truckers because they could eat it while driving. I do not know about the authenticity of the story, but it makes sense. But I think what allowed hoagies (or subs, grinders, whatever you want to call them) to survive is that they also taste great. I can say that a hoagie is one of my favorite meals. It is a perfect culmination of bread, meats, cheeses, veggies, vinegar, oil and spices and has been embraced worldwide as a lunch (or donner) favorite. Ricci's do hoagies right and as it continues to get handed down through the generations, I hope that they continue to flourish. So, after over a hundred years, the community still loves Ricci's and after eating here, you will understand why. My go-to hoagie has always been an Italian and they do their Italian right. It is a substantial meal at a fair price and it is something that you will return to Ricci's again and again for. As Ricci's enters into their second century, they still produce an outstanding product. With them continuing to do so, I can see them making it another century and beyond.

Yelp
WOW this Italian hoagie can't be beat! Hours Are pretty rough though* *no weekend hours my friends, so stock up before 4 on Friday

Yelp
Best hoagies in south Philly North Philly West Philly northeast Philly, just Philly Perry

Shawn R.

Yelp
Been getting Ricci's since my Uncle took me there as a little kid. He started going in the 60's. There's a reason for that. They're THEE best hoagies in the city!

Brad F.

Yelp
Still one of the best Italians I've had to date. Well packed. Fresh ingredients. Even labeled each sub with a name to easily identify the different Italians. Old school has the best cheese for a sub.

Von C.

Yelp
For several years we travelled 15 miles to the original Ricci's Hoagie shop at 11th and Innis in south Philly to get hoagies. As we age. we tend to forget things. Realizing that I had not been to Ricci;s for quite some time, it came back to me Today, the exact reason why we STOPPED travelling the great distance for a mediocre subpar hoagie. Today, I purchased two Italian Hoagies, but to our disappointment - again, we found, Ricci's hoagies are No Longer Special. The meats are not of good grade or quality. The lettuce is disgustingly shredded, tomatoes are tissue thin, and the rolls are truly, inferior hoagie rolls. Simply put Ricci's Hoagies now in present time SUCKS!!! Neither my husband nor I ate more than a couple of bites from the hoagies. We trashed the sandwiches. It is SOOO disappointing when restaurants with good following and reputations, ruin it all to increase their bottom line. I can only guess that when their business decline significantly, they will try to re-group and offer quality shit like they had done for many years, but I also quess it will be too late then, and they will either go bankrupt or sell the business. Ricci, if you read this review, think back to the products you used before the pandemic, and go back to those. People don't mind paying for quality shit. Then you can raise your prices, otherwise, you're headed for ruin. We truly miss what used to be an especially good Hoagie from Ricci's. I'm just saying!

Rob W.

Yelp
Ricci's Hoagies is a gem business! The people there are salt of the earth, their hoagies are certainly one of the best Philly has to offer. I had the Olde Italian; just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I need another!!

E G.

Yelp
BEST HOAGIE IN PHILADELPHIA. Incredible!!!! I would drive just to have one! Great service as well! Super fast!
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
The fresh sliced deli meats really makes a difference in these sandwiches. Everytime you get a sandwich it is so fresh and so delicious! You can customize what you want. I usually get the Old Fashioned Italian or regular Italian. Hands down one of the best hoagies in Philadelphia. The only downside is that it closes at 3pm and there is almost always a line out the door!
google avatar

Tiara B.

Yelp
Well worth the ride! This is a fairly small place, not much moving room but operations here are pretty simple. There isn't a typical ordering counter, just a line that swings around the deli. Once you're up, you place your order with whoever is taking orders and you get to watch as your sandwich is being made which I really like because you know exactly what you're getting before the sandwich is wrapped up. Definitely looking forward to returning.

Raymond W.

Yelp
I got the tuna and cheese hoagie! The best I ever had. My son had the Punisher. He loved it. The customer service is 5 stars. They are friendly and very helpful!! I will MOST DEFINITELY be back.
google avatar

Diane A.

Yelp
As an update, I went a second time and seems there are consistency issues... I ordered the same hoagie (Old fashioned Italian with the works, with hot peppers & pickles). Unfortunately what I received is not the hoagie I fell in love with. Very dry, very little meat & cheese. It's also missing a few of the requested items (i.e. hot peppers, pickles). They were busy (which is great to see) but it's unfortunate to see their quality greatly decrease during busy times. I called ahead as suggested to avoid the wait and was told about 30 minutes (I waited closer to 50), but the line ended up going faster. I'd suggest going in line vs calling ahead so you can see your hoagie made in real time as well.
google avatar

Antoinette C.

Yelp
Great hoagie tray for special event! Delicious and very nice people to deal with. Clean place. Fair price. I'll be back!
google avatar

Randy R.

Yelp
Often crowded, however they have their production line down to a science, so the wait is never long. Best hoagies in Philly.
google avatar

Meosterio _.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor, checkout this spot. I got the old fashioned Italian. Fresh sliced meat. Jam packed hoagie. 100% recommend. It was amazing. Oh and btw, get the chips too while you're in. 10/10, 5 stars, great experience.
google avatar

Andrea F.

Yelp
Fantastic hoagies. Can't believe I never knew about this place in all my years living here? Sign outside boasts that it was featured on the Food Network, and I'm always a sucker for anything and everything Flavortown so knew I had to drop in for to-go lunch one day. It's typical hectic South Philly ordering and I was a little intimidated when I walked in and saw the line of workers behind the glass shouting orders over the masses, but they couldn't be more pleasant. Got chicken cutlet hoagies with Cooper sharp and all the fixins' of an Italian sub (shredded lettuce, oil and vinegar, Italian seasoning shake, and pickles to boot.) With two bags of chips and two sodas, it was in the $20 range but WELL worth the price, plus I had leftovers for the next day the sandwich was so huge. Probably the best sandwiches I've had in a minute and fresh as all hell.
google avatar

Fatty B.

Yelp
9 A.M., 1/22/22: Nice, friendly people, the place had good energy and most importantly - the Old-Fashioned Italian hoagie was excellent! I will return.

Nick S.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and the bread is always fresh. The lunch rush is a bit crazy but they're quick and efficient in a cozy local space.

Zoë E.

Yelp
Went here one morning right when they opened. Great bread, cold cuts and veggies. Huge serving for a great price. One sandwich was my breakfast lunch and dinner. All to-go orders with no seating though but service was great and they are super friendly, would absolutely return.
