Ba Sa’s Owners Are Bringing Their Vietnamese Food to Capitol Hill - Eater Seattle

"In the early morning of Friday, February 9, a fire broke out at Rising Sun Produce, a fruit and vegetable stand in Roosevelt. Owner Virgil Goodwin told the Seattle Times that the produce was damaged by smoke and was a total loss; the store’s insulation is partially melted as well. Rising Sun has been open on the corner of NE 65th Street and 15th Avenue NE since 1979 and remained a neighborhood institution even as the neighborhood around it has been transformed and developed. Now it’s closed indefinitely, though a sign in front reads 'We Will Be Back.' Goodwin has organized a GoFundMe campaign that has raised nearly $40,000 so far." - Harry Cheadle

Google
absolutely delicious fruits. fruit is so expensive in the grocery store and not worth it, Rising Suns produce is affordable and by FAR more delicious. i got so excited over my Pluot and White Peach that i got- but genuinely they both were the best i’ve had in years. the white peach was so perfectly ripe, sweet, juicy. the people here are so great and you can taste the love in the food!!! two thumbs up!! 🫶🏻

Google
My very own farmer’s market across the street. The produce is colorful and delicious. You can find it open practically everyday! From your farm to my table. Monday - Friday 8am to 8pm.

Google
Great to see the shop back in business after the 2024 fire! Nice people and delicious goods. Highly recommend stopping by!

Google
So glad this place is finally open again! It’s the cutest little produce stand—we’re lucky to have such a gem in the Roosevelt area.

Google
Sweet neighborhood produce market. Really good fruits and veggies and a nicely curated selection of other staples.

Ziwei

Google
Fresh fruits and vegetables with great prices, basic grocery stuff is available also.

Zoe Tanner

Google
been here a bunch, friendly and nice, good prices

Google
Good prices but very mediocre produce. Under ripe but going bad at the same time, bruised, etc. I think the high ratings are people wanting it to feel like some charming local place but really the quality is seriously lacking. Bananas for 99c/lb that are very green and will go bad before they ripen? That's just absurd! A lot of their "cheap produce" is just closeout stuff from chains, which is to say half of it will be covered in mould while still being sold. And that's not an exaggeration, they once sold raspberries that were fuzzy all throughout. Well beyond safe, well beyond "just a couple bad ones." The. Entire. Thing. Recently got a clearance bag of spinach that looked nice but was rotting inside. I want to like this place but management needs to get it together.

Yelp
I woke up to the smell of smoke drifting through the neighborhood at 3am, the morning this place went down. Knowing that they had just reopened after closing for a month, it was heart-wrenching watching the firefighters drill through the front door because I knew this would be a catastrophic loss. (The firemen responded within minutes and the fire was only on the porch as far as I could see.) This was a small business with affordable produce and snacks. It was a good grab-and-go store that served the neighborhood for over 30 years. I would swing by 2-3 times a week because it's a much better alternative to pricey Whole Foods down the street. The staff were always kind and helpful. I wish I had seen or heard something that night. I don't even want to believe it. Why even do this? Now the last best thing in Roosevelt is gone. Where do we go now for groceries? How many more businesses do we need to lose in this neighborhood?

Yelp
Love rising sun! Simple open air market, with mostly produce , although they also carry select other groceries and have other local goods such as honey and craft beer/cider. It's great to support small local businesses, and I love going to rising sun! The staff are always kind as well and make the environment welcoming.

Yelp
What a deal on asparagus! And they have a seconds bin here- so if you're cooking it down or making a pie- check that out!

Doug B.

Yelp
Can't beat the prices! I come here twice a week, even though Whole Foods and Safeway are close by. I go to those stores for anything but produce.

Yelp
I love having fresh produce in the city! Prices are very reasonable and they always have a good selection of fruits and veggies, Christmas trees in December, and other miscellaneous grocery items as well. Employees are always friendly and helpful and I MUCH prefer buying my produce here over the grocery store. Come support this business, their freshness is the best!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this cute little fruit stand! I started buying fruits and veggies from them when they were a tiny operation across the street with heat lamps to keep the cashiers warm when they checked folks out. Now they are a full fledged farmers market-esque business with their own big parking lot! I like to get my oranges for juicing by the box here - reasonable prices and friendly faces make me a repeat customer. I know I can count on them to have good local produce and not feel like I am getting ripped off. Fresh ingredients make the best food so do yourself a favor and stop here for the best ingredients!

Yelp
Great selection and at great prices. Love the vibe in here and the people working are super rad. Got a ton of good produce for only $12! We will be back!!! Thanks for the awesome local spot for fresh food!

Yelp
I've had to tighten my budget a little recently and I figured that most of my money was going towards the grocery store. I went here a year ago once and it seemed like a good deal but it was out of the way for someone who was stuck taking the bus. Now I have a car here, thank god, and I went here specifically for produce and did the rest of my shopping at QFC. I found it to be kind of a waste of time because while I was in QFC I compared the prices and everything I got was almost exactly the same price in each place. The produce at Rising Sun looks a little more gnarly, but I'm not extremely picky about that. Here is what I bought: 1 lb box of strawberries 2 minneola tangelos 1 lb Italian prune plums 1 bunch of romaine lettuce 3 hass avocados 1 zucchini squash A little bag of mushrooms 1 head of garlic 2 roma tomatoes Total: $12.49 I think that I will continue to come here when I need produce because the people were nice, it's not a chain, and I do think they have pretty good deals from time to time. However, I do think that it's a bit overhyped on yelp in terms of how cheap it is in comparison to regular grocery stores. I also thought it was sweet how they added a little poem at the end of my receipt. "A plum may be dumb and a peach kind of pretty but if they're not sweet oh, what a pity!"
google avatar

Inna B.

Yelp
They are awesome because they have great deals on produce and I live close by so it's pretty convenient... but I just can't deal with the bugs. They have a good variety of fruit and vegetables (as well as Jones Soda and some misc items), but I have noticed a fair amount of "softened" fruit and little itty bitty bugs flying around other things that I was interested in (especially the raspberries and blueberries). Maybe I'll try again in the fall/winter?
google avatar

Tien D.

Yelp
Some things are a great deal here, whereas other things are more expensive than normal grocery stores. Apples and grapes seemed to have been pretty cheap when I visited. Lemons and limes were 49 cents each (which I found a little expensive since I normally get my limes around 3-4 limes for a dollar). I liked how the store was a garage that opened up. I visited on a sunny day so it was refreshing being able to stay outside
google avatar

Carmina B.

Yelp
Certainly not grade A, B and passable C grade produce. I was informed by the friendly clerk they buy cheap produce and organics don't fall in that category. The organic chard I did find was wilted. Here's an example of something I picked up.... Disappointing. I'd rather pay more to head over to PCC and expect better quality and fresher produce. Navel oranges here were $1.99/lb and PCC had them for $1.49.
google avatar

Yelp
I tried this place for the first time after putting it on my "to try" list ages ago. Its a nice little produce stand in the Roosevelt neighborhood. They had a great variety of produce and fresh herbs. When I visited, they especially had a ton of apple and pear varieties for far less than what you'd pay at QFC or Fred Meyer. I'm sure their varieties shift with the seasons, though. Some of their prices are a steal (like the pears) but most are just below or right at what you'd pay at a major grocery store. However I feel like the produce, in general, was much fresher-looking than what I find at my normal grocery stores. I appreciate that they have a good number of parking spots available. I definitely recommend this place for your produce needs over the big stores. Its definitely worth the additional stop on your grocery run.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
Love this market! Really fresh fruit and vegetables and very competitively priced! On average, I would say 30-50% cheaper than Wholefoods and PCC. Quality is very good, however, the outside nature does mean that the vegetables do not have the same supermarket glow to them. If shopping regularly, I would suggest asking what days the different produce come in to the store, and making trips on those days. Friendly staff. Pro-Tip: bring your own shopping bag (will save you 10c) Would recommend!
google avatar

RR G.

Yelp
I may have gotten this confused with rising produce in the international district. But I heard heard good things and decided to check it out. It wasn't bad prices for significantly lower than the supermarkets. I noticed pink lady apples at $.99 which was about $.30 cheaper then other places. Only one out of about every 10 was acceptable. The rest were bruised and damaged. Other prices still lower than the supermarket were not as good as McPherson's in Beacon Hill. It's worth checking out and you will save a few dollars over the supermarkets but if you want to go for a combination of quality and price go to McPherson's

Yelp
I love this place! So quick and easy to just stop in, hop out, buy some fresh veggies and head home. Always very friendly staff there. Vegetables are a decent price and usually super fresh and delicious. They also sell a few specialty items and treats. Lots of fruit, salad mix, and veggies. My only wish is that they had asparagus more often because it's my favorite veggie. But, other than that this place is is great! Recommended.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
I really feel like this place is hit or miss. When produce is at its peak you'll find me at places like this, hustling for the freshest berries and veggies. Sadly it did not live up to the bar here. I found plenty of great local apples and some veggies, but most were picked over, wilted, and soft. The local raspberries being offered were a joke. Completely picked over and left with mushy berries. I gave up after sorting through some decent avocados. After I left, I ended up heading over to my local farmer's market and found much fresher produce.
google avatar

Whitney B.

Yelp
My routine for grocery shopping is to shop every Monday and buy enough to last me the week. When I went to Rising Sun, I bought enough produce to last a week for six people. Where you would normally spend $40-$60 for a week's worth of groceries at a chain supermarket, $40 could get you double that amount. It is seriously a good deal. It took a lot of will power to stop shopping like a crazy person thinking the apocalypse is imminent. They have your general selection of vegetables and fruits, as well as others that are stand-outs and or seasonal. Carrots, celery, peppers, oranges, potatoes, asparagus, leek, broccoli, onions, etc. Last time I visited, they had beets, leek, rhubarb, and heirloom tomatoes. All that good stuff. I wouldn't recommend their shelf selection with boxed goods and breads. Those items are marked up. Go for the fresh produce instead. It's better for you, anyway. In any case, this is a particularly good place when you can't make it to the Farmer's Markets on Sundays/Thursdays. It is a little over 1.5 miles from where I live, which is quite far on foot. The inconvenience factor is the only reason why I don't go here every day for my produce. If they switched places with the Safeway in U-District, my life would then be complete. A lot of produce goes to waste when it gets delivered to the large supermarkets. If there are any imperfections, it gets tossed in compost or the garbage. I welcome imperfections in my produce--it shouldn't all have to be perfectly round and non-bruised. This is where you will find such produce. . .at a great deal, too.

Yelp
This place is my little secret. When I first moved to Seattle, a lot of people back home would comment to me that I would be paying a lot more for produce. I'm from California, the land of the 99 cent avocado and for a long time I lived in an area where huge crates of strawberries were sold on the side of the road for under 5 dollars. I'll admit that I was a little shocked when I went into a Safeway and saw my favorite apples, Honeycrisp on "sale" for $3 a pound. I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for apples, no matter how sweet and how delicate the crunch. I was Honeycrisp-less for a long time before I discovered this place. Rising Sun, oh how you changed all that. Their prices are seasonal (obviously) and they offer an abundance of whatever's seasonal, but my heart leapt when I saw Honeycrisp apples for 99 cents a pound. That beats the Trader Joe's price (last I checked it was $1.29 a piece). I'll list more prices, but, like I said, they're not consistent because it all depends on how much they get and what's in season, but bell peppers are 70 cents, sweet pie pumpkins were 99 cents a piece, and I just bought a bunch of avocados for 75 cents a piece. Take that, California.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Not impressive. It's cheap and that's their stock in trade. I was just very disappointed that there's not much in the way of organic fruits and vegetables. Apples, for example, use more pesticides than any other crop, so I would never buy apples unless they are certified organic. I asked the guy behind the counter which of his products are organic, and he pointed to some bagged carrots and red chard. That was it. I'd like to be able to buy more from here more often, and there are some things that don't need to be organic like onions and avocados, but it's too bad that we can't have a better produce stand in our neighborhood. Maybe if you worked more with local organic farmers, they could give you price breaks in exchange for getting their product out to a neighborhood that would support them. I like having a place like this nearby, but when I actually shop there I am so disappointed.

Yelp
I came here today in a search for figs (my *FAVORITE* food in the world right now BTW), which sadly they didn't have... but for a whopping total of four dollars even I got: 1. A few honey crisp apples ($1.29 lb) 2. two big zucchinis (69 cents a pound) 3. a big jalapeno (a whopping 15 cents) 4. a big white onion (59 cents a pound) 5. a few Roma tomatoes (89 cents a pound) 6. three big red bell peppers (3 for $1.29) In trying times like these, it's nice to now there is a place where you can get fruits and veggies at a good cost. Staff is friendly, and they accept cash/check only.

Yelp
What a lovely great big produce stand! While heading to a friend's the other day to BBQ, I got a last minute text asking for some lemons. Having already left my house about 15 mins before, I was only a mile or so from my final destination. As I was thinking about where to go for lemons I looked on Yelp and happened upon some great reviews for Rising Sun. As it was on my way, I just pulled into a spot and ran inside to see if they had lemons. And boy did they! In addition to every kind of fresh frui and veg you could imagine, there were short lines and smiling faces at each register. I paid $49 cents for 3 massive lemons and was on my merry way just 90 seconds later. Because my friends and I visit this area nearly every weekend to get together for BBQs and board games, I'll make it a point to buy fruit and healthy snack items more often. The prices are great and you can't beat the parking spots. They've got a few spaces right in front and some additional spots across the street.

Yelp
I would like to become Mrs. Rising Sun Farms. That's right, I love this place so much I'd like to marry it, and have lots of little pink ladies! Okay, that ship has sailed, but what's not to love? Prices so cheap that you'll gasp at anywhere else, crispy apples (and I am an admitted apple freak. I eat at least two a day, and if I don't have them around, I tend to panic), ripe avocados, juicy peaches, white nectarines - and really sweet service by the college students who tend to work here. Fruit is my crack, and Rising Sun is my crack house. Marry me, Rising Sun, and make sure all those .99 cent ripe pineapples are at the reception. ;)
google avatar

Yelp
This stand is a good place to grab weekly necessities. As with most produce stands, you have a range of deals - some are screaming, some are quiet, and some are hiding. In general, I overpay for produce at regular grocery stores but sometimes I do that out of convenience. Today, I got great deals on fuji apples, white nectarines, and bell peppers. The things I passed on were super expensive honey, tiny corn, and bland rainier cherries. Okay deals included sweet onions, broccoli crowns, and cauliflower. I like that they accept cards (with a $3 minimum purchase). The store is very clean and airy. The parking lot has a good amount of spots but they're small. As others have suggested, it may be a good idea to park in the lot across the street. My haul today was $15. My price at a regular grocery store would have been $25 for the same overstuffed two bags of produce.
google avatar

Cathy G.

Yelp
So much fun to come here! Parking can be tricky - used to not be so, but that's a price you pay for going to a popular place! Good prices, outside, healthy looking and tasting food. A few items which can be gifts. The staff is always friendly and that all said.. I amout the door to have a little food adventure!

Maddie S.

Yelp
Great selection, super nice staff, and much better prices compared to any other grocer/market in seattle. Make sure you stop by this place!
google avatar

Ninja S.

Yelp
So there is a place you can get decent fruit and vegetables away from the "farmers market" extortion prices. I was out and about, saw this place, and swooped in for a huge bag of loot fruit for $7. It may be a kind of scratch and dent for fruit, but it's all way better and cheaper than what you may find in stores.
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
Minus 1 star because they only accept check or cash, and when you buy by the pound, it is hard to judge how much the final bill will be. But this place still gets five stars from me because usually the final cost is low because of their low prices. Their produce isn't of the highest quality or checked 7 time. The apples are stashed in huge wooden crates, and the zukes are piled high in the back. They keep down overhead with a natural concrete floor and everything is out in the open. Eat green, be green. And don't pay with a bad check, or you will end up posted on the wall of shame. Also, at the end of the summer they close for one week so all their employees can go on vacation.

Yelp
I am visiting from Virginia's Eastern Shore. My son lives in Wallingford. I walked to Rising Sun after a quick cup of coffee and a jaunt through Ravenna Park. Beautiful produce, and a super friendly staff.

Yelp
The lovely and talented Elite Yelper, Whitney B., (see the spun-gold below) turned me on to this market. Before I had been going to MacPherson's F&P - which is great - but this market suits me better. It's closer and, I think, a little better. The two staffers are very sweet: I left my credit card on the counter and the girl ran me down before I drove away. The selection is great and they even have a grains/nuts section. They have roma tomatoes and the best grapefruits I've had in a long time. Most of the produce is higher quality, so there is less routing around to do. First visit: I walk up and see a special "rare mold" sale on Blueberries (a superfood and my favorite). Guess the price? For 18 ounces...99 Cents!!?! Unreal. Apparently there was mold on a few of the blueberries in the delivery. I bought 90 ounces of the Blue stuff (perfectly good - moldless) and made pie for days. They miiight be slightly more expensive than MacPherson's - not on everything but some things. This will be my go to produce market...until they start a daily, affordable organic market in Seattle.
google avatar

Annalisa S.

Yelp
I love shopping at Rising Sun Farms. Everytime I go there I wonder why I would spend twice as much at QFC, or even Safeway, to get the same good produce. RSF beats supermarket prices by as much as 50%. They have a great selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, including "exotic" and speciality foods like mangos, kiwis, startfruit, heirloom tomatoes, and a variety of apples, pears, and plums. Some items are locally grown, which makes me feel good because I know I am supporting local farmers. And supporting local business! By the checkout counter there are organic breads, soy treats, and great chips. The only drawback I notice to shopping at this great little produce stand is that occasionally sale items or really cheap items are ripe and need to be eaten within a few days. However, the quality of the produce is consistantly high and sometimes better than what I find at the grocery store. Rising Sun Farms is Great!
google avatar

Allison H.

Yelp
I've lived in Seattle for going on 4 years now, driven by this place hundreds of times and today was my first visit. I had no idea what I was missing! Rising Sun is pretty much a semi-outdoor grocery store with mostly fruit and veggies. And like everyone else has said, this place is CHEAP! I will gladly do my shopping "outside" if it means 35 cents/lb for onions and 2 bucks for the pint of grape tomatoes that are usually double that at Safeway. In addition to the produce, they do have a few other things - a small selection of milk, eggs, and yogurt as well as dried fruit, nuts, and a random assortment of other stuff, although not all of it is as amazingly cheap as the produce. I felt like I was going produce crazy and I ended up spending just shy of 10 bucks (cash or check only, by the way). I even got a package of delicious looking pitas for a reasonable price. Fabulous! I'll be back for sure.

Molly S.

Yelp
Love adding Rising Sun to my grocery routine. The staff is always so friendly and the produce is fresh and well priced. Thankful that they are in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Gloria D.

Yelp
Great stand just north of Seattle! It's easy to get to once you get off exit 170 on I-5. Service is great, the owner Bud is there almost every day until 2P. The layout of the stand is appealing to the eye since everything is open & right in front of you. If you're out in the area doing some grocery shopping, stop here & pick up your produce! Support local!
google avatar

Christina O.

Yelp
Produce is usually cheaper than Safeway & QFC, and cheaper than the other stand on the corner of 15th ave NW. The apples are a real deal. Variety is fairly wide: don't expect to see sweet potatoes, yuca or taro root here. Do check produce for (over)ripeness. $10 can fill up your grocery bag, and $20 can fulfill your fruits & vegetables nutritional requirements for a week. I like that they sell refillable gift cards now. I usually park on the northwest corner of 15th & 65th, as the lot adjacent to the market is very small and just one large vehicle driven by someone with poor eyesight or poor parking skills can make the lot treacherous to navigate at a busy time.
google avatar

Mai O.

Yelp
Rising Sun, long time fan, with renewed appreciation after a shiny new market has been built just across the street from their old location. Paved parking lot and the best part? Drum roll pleeeease.... Now accepting debit/credit cards!! I count on this place for juicy peaches & nectarines from Yakima around August with a steal at around $1.30 per/lb (farmers market charges about $3/lb). Hermiston seedless watermelons that are crisp and sweet around 40 cents/lb. Yellow corn, perfect for the grill alongside Walla Walla onions that are sweet and mellow from Eastern WA. Early fall, the new crop apples come in from Cashmere vicinity: Jonagold, Cameo, Pink Lady, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious all for under $1.50/lb. Amazing prices for lots of local produce finds. They have a sporadic selection of organic produce, but mostly from out of state. October has plentiful sugar pie pumpkins to bake all kinds of treats with. Late November, they have a great Christmas tree lot selection for under $40 for Noble Firs, my fav. Bring your reusable totes and bags.
google avatar

Steven G.

Yelp
If you're a person who loves vegetables, but is too cheap to pay grocery store prices, too lazy to visit farmers markets, and too proud to be seen in Whole Foods, Rising Sun will change your life. It's changed mine. I no longer feel judged by vegans. My fridge space is lush and green. My cottage cheese, corn chips, and bacon sandwiches are layered with thinly sliced yellow peppers, fresh tomatoes, and spinach. I rub my healthy, colorful meals in other people's localvore food movement faces by posting pictures on my wall. If I forget cash or show up after the 8pm closing time, I "glean" produce from the dumpster in the back corner of the lot. Everyone is impressed by my resourcefulness and earth conscious attitude. Especially when I remember to bring my reusable tote bag. Because of Rising Sun thrift and sloth have finally made me healthy and cool. I'm never moving out of this neighborhood.
google avatar

Randi S.

Yelp
I LOVE this place. I am so sad I don't live on 15th anymore.. Sometimes you have to dig through the half rotting produce with flies buzzing around, but its SUPER cheap and they have great specials. I walk away from this place with three bags stuffed full of produce and its under 20 bucks. They also have eggs, cheese, milk, bread, nuts, and dried fruit. CASH only. Sometimes staffed by cute boys with lip rings.
google avatar

Michele L.

Yelp
This place ROCKS. I mean, talk about cheap produce. Good quality, with a really good selection. I love the farm stand feel as you stand on the corner of 2 busy streets, the moment I enter the stand I disappear into a different world. Its conveniently located and easy to get to. The lines can be a little long at busy times but then when they ring you up and you spent under ten dollars on a giant basket of fresh produce, there are no complaints, really. Oh yeah just make sure you bring cash because they don't accept credit cards!
google avatar

Taryn H.

Yelp
I've been busing past this place for about 6 months now, noticing the prices...today was the day I finally walked down there and bought some produce. Prices are at least 50% less than the regular grocery store. If you live in the neighborhood and are watching your grocery budget, it's definitely worth the trip!
google avatar

Raz B.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I went to high school a block away (graduated in 2000). This place is awesome if you are not bothered by your produce maybe looking a little bit ugly. Yeah, the peppers might look weird, there is some russet on the apples, and the eggplants are ugly. But you know what? The produce here is cheap, tastes just fine, and is brought to you by a little local business. The cost to shop here is literally a fraction of Whole Foods or QFC a couple blocks away. Great staff and friendly, local, crunchy vibe. You will be amazed how far your dollar goes here. I have bought fruits and veggies to last a couple weeks and still spent less than $20.
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
Can't beat the prices for produce at Rising Sun, and the new location is great. They usually have the staples and seasonal fruits/veggies, though you never know exactly what you'll find on a given day. Credit cards are now accepted - no longer cash only! My only complaint is that I wish they carried a more extensive organic selection. Organic options are usually few to none.
google avatar

Talia E.

Yelp
I've been going out of my way to buy from here for years, and you should too. Cash only, really really cheap, solid selection of fruits and veggies (and a handful of other randomly related food items, like croutons, nuts, etc.). Today I bought a bag of mini plums, a bell pepper, a head of garlic, a bag of baby carrots, and some string beans... $6. Love it.
google avatar

Nath A.

Yelp
I'd always assumed that this was an expensive farmers'-market-type place, where you buy hyperorganic grass-fed leeks for $40/oz. It's not. This is an old-school produce shop. It's mostly the same quality as your local supermarket, but cheaper, with more choices. In addition to fresh produce, they have a shelf with various breads and pitas and such, as well as a selection of dried fruits. They are now across the street from where they used to be; the new location has walls and credit-card machines, both of which make the shopping experience slightly more convenient. Stop by, and bring a large bag. Two, actually. You'll walk away with more than you expected.
google avatar

Jack D.

Yelp
The prices here are pretty unbelievable. Every time I visit I feel like an idiot for having shopped at Safeway or QFC the day before. A good chunk of the selection is consistently half the price (or less) of what you'll find at chain grocery stores. I'm particularly impressed with Rising Sun's reliable rates on apples, bell peppers, leafy greens, pears, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, onions, shallots, and squash. The variety is also plentiful, but the options do rotate a lot. The quality can be great if you inspect your selections before buying. If you walk in here with a five dollar bill, you can walk out with a respectable bag full of a spectrum of fruits and veggies, especially if you stick to the specials. For example, today the brussels sprouts were $0.89/lb, tomatoes $0.50/lb, and broccoli $0.88/lb. There's always some "wow" deal somewhere in the stands, so visit often. I see people here complaining about the quality of the food, but honestly, I think most people have distorted ideas about what natural fruit should look like. I don't mind a little dust or discoloration on my Braeburns. Every time I take a bite out of something from this place, the texture and taste have been wonderful. Can't say the same for the shiny, wax-coated, plastic-y "perfect" fruits that I've eaten from Safeway. As for the cons, the prices are not good at all for non-produce items like bread and jams, but I guess they need to make a profit somewhere. The nuts and dried fruits are also very expensive per pound, especially compared to places like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Same for the refrigerated stuff. Stick to other sources for things like dairy, tofu, sodas, etc. This is not a general store. If you keep yourself to the produce bins, you'll walk out of here with a surprisingly low total and a lot of food. Don't forget to bring cash (or check) as they don't take cards!

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't reviewed the fruit stand yet. This place is awesome. I get the wigglies everytime I drive passed it. It's fun because you never know what you'll find. The variety of apples is always different. Tasty. You do have to usually pick through a few bad seeds to find a ripe, pure apple. Wow - sounds like describing men. ;) I also get excited about anticipating what new seasonal fruit will be out. Always a good deal on that! The prices are the best compared to - anywhere! The staff is always friendly. They also seem to have a good knowledge on their produce. I bought my first ever pomegranate here and they gave good advice of how to pick the good ones, and how to clean and eat it. I am really sad that the city might buy them out - I really hope they find another local area to keep the fruit stand around. I love this place!

Yelp
Buy all the produce for our household of 4 here. Uber cheap and it's close to where I live. They have organics only occasionally. Yes, they do close the whole place for a week or two in the fall, and if you get there right at that moment, you can come home with a huge amount of nearly-free, or even free, stuff.

Yelp
I recently bought a juicer so I can here to stock up on produce and fruits as buying at a chain grocery store would just be stupid for how much fresh produce/fruit I'll be using. I spend a grand total of $28.02 (cash or check only) and stocked up on two types of apples (8), celery (2 heads), beautiful kale (3 bunches), bananas (5), pears (3), a bag of carrots (2lbs), cucumbers (5), and a bag of raw almonds. My giant grocery bag was filled up over the brim and I could've used my bf to lug it to the car. Great prices, good selection, although you may have to go on different days if the quality of some of the produce/fruits aren't what you're looking for. The lettuce and spinach looked a bit sad when I went, but it's not like that every time. If you see medicore quality stuff, I'd skip it and come back for a new shipment the next day. It's a smaller fruit market than MacPherson's on Beacon hill and the quality is a bit hit or miss, but since it's close to my house and the prices are cheap, I have no complaints!

Yelp
I agree sometimes it is scratch and dent produce, but I love it here and the prices are cheap! Much cheaper than Whole Foods or even QFC usually. They have a box of browned bananas for cheaper than the fresher ones that are perfectly fine for fruit smoothies or banana bread. Cash or check only. I love the pita bread they sell there. If you open a bag of the candied fruit and attracted ants, shame on you!

Yelp
I miss living closer to Rising Sun! I used to skip getting fruits and veggies at Whole Foods down the street and get them all here. And boy, did I save money. Bags of cheap fruits and veggies, and great quality as well. They always have great seasonal veggies here. Love the avocado, tomato, and berry selections. They rarely don't have something I need and they even have some great non veggie items. Chips, dairy section, etc. Really friendly staff. The new location is really nice and has more parking. Update: now accepting credit and debit cards. $3 minimum. Yay!
