Best Restaurants in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"Keep an apron in the car for impromptu visits to this Northeast Side landmark. The torta ahogada is a landmine of melting carnitas, cabbage, pickled onions, and vinegary sauce squeezed into a “drunken” Guadalajaran birote. The rolls of paper towels on every table can barely sop up the inevitable mess, but it’s entirely worth the chaos. The superlative carnitas also star in other dishes, from the cheeky Chilakillers to the masterful taco chilango topped with crushed pork cracklings and lime." - Brandon Watson

Just like the reveiw before us, we've had this place saved for a couple months now. If we could eat with your eyes , this place is a visual feast of decor and food presentation. Visually the food looks great! Unfortunately, the taste and texture of the tortas was underwhelming. The pork was underseasoned and dry. Bread to sauce ratio was mostly bread and not enough sauce to fully soften the torta. The tomato based sauce was muted of any deep flavors. This place did not remind me of the tortas from Guadalajara where I originate. The cripsy taco had a slight advantage of being fried but same case in flavors. The speed of service should have been a warning flag as to give it away that everything is pre-made. It smelled so clean you wouldn't think they cook in the building. The gringa was very pretty but again the pastor meat was underwhelming, and the pineapple slices made it tolerable. The guacamole and chips gave me this sensation that it was almost made from powdered avacados since they blend it into a perfect goop. No hand mashed gauc here, folks. (I made up powdered avacados to explain the space food consistency of the guac) Thank y'all, but we will not be coming back Loved the Eagle emblem doorhandle!

Always on the lookout for new & interesting places, we stopped in and were very impressed. Located in a unique area I wouldn't equate with locations to eat, this place is top notch. The atmosphere is lively and casual. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is amazing! The menu isn't very big, but the selections are so good. The prices are reasonable and the portions are huge. We will definitely be back!

We have had this on our list of food to try, especially since it was featured on Guy Fieri's show. There is minimal parking but a very cool little building. We got the chips and salsa and a few different tacos to try. I was definitely expecting for the tacos to have more flavor than they did. It had a very muted tomato taste. I also found a black hair in my cabbage slaw on one of my tacos, which is always a turn-off. Just based on the taste of the food we probably wouldn't eat it again but there seemed to be a lot of people there really enjoying their meal.

Google
I loved the space. super cute, great artwork that truly brings the place to life! The service was great. Friendly, helpful and accommodating, the split a Torta Ahogada so we could share. Wife liked Al Pastor the best, and for me it was the Gringa Taco that will live on as the best item of the visit. Chef Rojo's art is awesome! I really think I liked it even more than the food, which was really good, too! great value!

Google
Nice little hidden food spot. Menu is simple with about three or four different protein options to choose from but they are all pork. The torta is the must try here. Not your traditional Mexican food flavor. The sauce taste tomato sauce but still good. Don't wear white because you will get messy eating here.

I discovered Ro-Ho while watching Good Eats, and my partner promptly arranged a day and time for us to go there. We had the pleasure of dining at Ro-Ho Pork and Bread on a breezy Saturday morning. I must say, it was a delightful experience. The restaurant offers cozy, vibrant cultural colors, a warming smell of authentic spices, and a welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. The highlight of the meal was, of course, their signature pork dishes. The pork was incredibly tender and full of flavor, and the portion sizes were more than generous. I tried their pork sandwich, and it was absolutely mouthwatering—for next time I would ask to have the sauce on the side. The bread was fresh, soft, and perfectly complemented the pork. The menu offers a variety of options; however, it is a very small menu. If you're in the area and craving hearty, flavorful comfort food, Ro-Ho Pork and Bread is definitely worth a visit. I’ll be coming back for sure!

Always phenomenal food and service. A great change of pace from the normal tired ol burger game. Very close to my office so always a nice treat... Definitely recommend!

Google
My dad has been raving about this place after going once and eventually convinced me to go with him. Welp. I am not disappointed. I had the tacos chilangos. The pork is soft and flavorful. The chicharones adds a good saltiness and crunch. I thought the double corn tortilla would be weird but it was absolutely perfect. The amount of food that goes into these tacos, the double corn tortilla is a must lol. I have zero complaints.

Yelp
Recommended by locals. Out of the way spot near the airport. You just gotta try the torta ahogada. Bring a change of clothes. Juicy, messy and scrumptious.

Yelp
Cute place and knowledgeable staff. The chips and several salsas were excellent and boded well for the meal. The pastor tacos are the best thing on the menu. Because the pineapple is served (fresh) on the side, the meat is tender but not overly soft from pineapple enzymes during cooking. The Ro-Ho preparation yielded a tender, juicy, very flavorful meat that was perfect in a taco, garnished with onions, cilantro, and pineapple. The Pork Butt Carnitas Torta Ahogada is delicious and huge. Easily feeds two people. The bread is fabulous. While the carnitas was again a bit dull for our taste, the tomato-y dipping sauce and extra salsas zhuzhed it up quite well. Make sure you get a bite with onions, radish and cabbage along with the sandwich. The extra crunch makes it. I think next time I'll have my dipping sauce on the side instead of poured over because it does make the bread soggy. Plan on using lots of paper towels. This is a messy meal. Our chilaquiles fans didn't care for the chilakillers. The chips were too sturdy and the carnitas was too bland. Too many onions, and they weren't pickled long enough. It still was tasty, but I probably wouldn't order it again. Recommended.

Yelp
Friday night at the ranch. We're about to head south for the GFs birthday on Saturday. I'm mulling food options in my head for the weekend. Well, Triple D answered that question and sent us to Ro-Ho Pork and Bread as our Saturday lunch stop. You'll never see this place from the freeway; kinda off the beaten path in a business area. Once you enter you'll find a simple order at the counter process. No soda machine, bottled drinks including beer in a nearby cooler. Find an available table and the food comes quickly. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos to start. This pork is fired on a spit and the meat shows this with it's crisp exterior. Possibly the best pastor taco I've ever had. I also had to try the torta as seen on the show. GF tried the taco version of the same dish. A house made bolillo split and stuffed with your choice of pork. Doll it up any way you want with shredded cabbage, radish, and pickled onions. A tomato based sauce completes the chef's vision of this dish. The plate presented as an art piece. There were a few minor issues; the pork itself wasn't that flavorful. Also, if you have any dental work the bread is SUPER hard. I did think of something as a solution. I'd offer the "dipped" solution ala Chicago Italian Beef. Dip the entire bolillo on request!

Yelp
This spot has been on my list of must visit locations in SA for a long time! Finally made it and WOW it exceeded expectations. Everything we tried, which was quite a few items, were all absolutely delicious. Attention to detail is apparent and appreciated. Everything was so well crafted, super fresh and balanced. I would highly suggest this place, and already have to MANY people now. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Recommend: Yes (N. New Braunfels Ave location). Checking out Ro-Ho has been on my to do list for quite some time. I came here on a Friday evening. There are two buildings that sort of hide the front door/restaurant but the Ro-Ho sign is easy to see in the evening. Parking in front of building may see limited but there is plenty of places to park. Food: I selected the crispy carnitas taco and the chillakillers with carnitas as well. I also opted for a jamaica flavored margarita and soda. The total for food was about $35.00. The portions were a good size. I would venture to say that two people could share the chilaquiles. There was a ton of meat served, and the chips were very crispy. The taco was also very crispy with a good amount of carnitas. Both the taco and chilaquiles had a tomatoes based sauce with oregano which was tasty. The carnitas lacked flavor but overall the food was ok. There was a salsa you could add (it was very spice but very good). The margarita was very cold, strong, and tasted very good. Service: The service was good. My order was taken quickly at the counter and delivered in about 5 mins to my seat. The staff was helpful in answering my questions. Ambiance: The ambiance is good, there is music (heard Mexican mostly while there) playing. There is plenty of indoor seating and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating area has banderitas and lights that make it feel like you are in someone's home at a family cookout. It was very enjoyable. There wasn't too many people when I came so seating was wide open.

Yelp
A great take on Torta ahogada. The bread here is phenomenal, the sauce is tomatoey, and the pork is so succulent and salty. I get the mix of carnitasl and cueritas. You order at the counter, and the nice folks bring your food to the table. They have indoor and outdoor seating here and its not too noisy. There aren't many parking spots so you might need to get one on the street.

Yelp
I was in SA on business and had finished one mtg and headed to a lunch mtg when I spotted Ro-Ho Pork and Bread. I noticed a sign in front that said it was Wine Magazine's Sandwich of the Year. Interesting. So I picked up my customer and asked if he'd been there and he said but was up for something new. The menu is simple - what I would call pulled pork (less the bbq sauce) either on a bun, on a bed of nacho chips or in a corn tortilla. And various stuff to mix these together with. Having no idea what some of the names meant I went with what sounded like a great choice - the Chilikillers (see pic) And dammm it was a good choice. Pulled pork, pinto bean purée, a tomato sauce pickled onions with sour cream and feta cheese. Yep feta. An odd choice I thought but worked great. My customer went with two tacos, La Gringa and Tacos Al Pastor. They looked good and said they were awesome. I can't wait until my next trip to SA to try out the other options. So me being a gringo, I couldn't try the pork stomach - didn't even know it was a thing, but it is. Good pricing too. Lots of good Mexican beers and frozen margaritas.

Yelp
Great food in a beautiful restaurant. The location is tucked away but don't let that fool you, the grub here is legit! We had the Tort Ahogada, Gringa Taco, and Taco Al Pastor and all three were excellent. Super well prepared and delicious. Service was very friendly. Great spot!

Yelp
What a great little hole in the wall. I stumbled on to Ro-Ho by accident and very happy I did. When you walk in, you are hit with great smells and the food matches the smells. I ordered the carnitas and when I sat to await my order I only waited a few minutes and was served. In a word, fantastic. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of their menu. Ok maybe a bridge to far but definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Absolutely the best torta I've ever eaten. My husband got the tacos with the crunch. I loved the bread and bought 2 extra to take home. Chef should bottle the torta sauce. It was outstanding. Will be back.

Yelp
Ro-Ho is one of my favorite restaurants in SA. Hidden in an industrial area it truly is a gem. The carnitas are so eloquently delicious and hit the spot when paired with their delicious margaritas! Service is always fast and friendly with options of outdoor or indoor dining. With the closeness to the airport this is a usual stop when family comes into town.

Yelp
I always enjoy bringing people new to San Antonio to this restaurant when they ask for authentic Mexican food. The meat is always fork tender and very flavorful. The bread is firm and doesn't fall apart but not tough. The tortillas are also delicious. I saw they are now serving Tacos Al pastor so I definitely have to try those. Also, the margaritas are really good and only $5. Great service and food. Their restrooms are also really clean.

Yelp
This place is legit! Such great authentic tastes! Please open one in Austin!! We would love the Tortas here!

Yelp
Cruising my old job's space and had to stop by one of my favs. They still have it, and they added a frozen drink mixer, too... $5 margaritas and pina coladas!! One of us had nachos (with cabbage mix), and the other had chillakillers. Lots of food ... great flavor ... fast for lunch. PS. They have indoor and patio seating. Parking is at a premium.

Yelp
I recently dined at Ro-HO and was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance struck me as inviting and vibrant, perfectly setting the stage for an authentic dining experience. The service at Ro-HO was impeccable. The staff was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure our dining experience was memorable. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered great recommendations, contributing to the overall pleasant atmosphere. Now, let's talk about the food - it was simply sensational. I had the gringa taco and Al pastor, both of which were served super hot and bursting with flavors. The gringa taco, with its perfect blend of cheese and meat, was mouthwatering, while the Al pastor was marinated to perfection, offering a delightful mix of sweetness and spice that tantalized my taste buds. To complement my meal, I ordered a margarita, which was the cherry on top of an already fantastic dining experience. It was well-crafted, refreshing, and paired wonderfully with my meal. In conclusion, Ro-HO is a gem that offers a fantastic ambiance, stellar service, and delectably hot and delicious food. Whether you're a fan of tacos or just in search of a great meal with a delightful atmosphere, Ro-HO should definitely be on your list. Highly recommended!

Yelp
A hidden gem serving up some of the best food in San Antonio! I had some friends recently visiting from out of town and knew that I had to take them here for dinner. Although it was quiet when we first arrived - by the time we were ready to leave there was literally a line out the door. (That should tell you something) It didn't take long for the food to be brought to our table and I wasted no time going to town on my classic Torta ahogada (their specialty) with pork butt carnitas. The meat on the torta was extremely flavorful and the bread flaky and delicious. Do yourself a favor and get here as fast as you can.
google avatar

Yelp
The pork was okay not much flavor The bread was really good though and the dipping sauce was just okay as well. Won't have again
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good, but not great. Very limited menu. We were their only customers at prime dinner time. Definitely worth trying but I don't know it would be top of my list to go back.

Yelp
If you're looking for some of the best carnitas in San Antonio, you have to visit Ro-Ho. This spot is tucked away in a business district and has a fun, colorful atmosphere meant for hanging out and enjoying some delicious food. We ordered the carnitas nachos, their special of al pastor tacos, and carnitas tacos. The carnitas was super tender, juicy, flavorful and everything you'd want in perfect pork. In one of the tacos, the meat included some crunchy cracklings. It was really good, but some of the cracklings were a little petrified like I was eating bones almost, so I ended up picking those out. I prefer more crispy cracklings over hard. Other than that, the tacos were amazing! The al pastor was also so good, especially with the big chunks of pineapple. The nachos were probably my fav because the beans were sooo good and the sauce on the chips was to die for. Next time, I definitely want to try their infamous tortas! I'm super glad we found great carnitas in town!

Janelle W.

Yelp
I come here every time I visit my daughter in San Antonio. Absolutely delicious! Perfectly sized portions for the price and I love the pineapple served with the meal!

Yelp
Staff was very friendly, conveniently close to the airport. Food was very good and authentic. Saw on Diners Drive In's and Dives. It didn't disappoint!

Graci K.

Yelp
Ro-Ho is the spot for the best sandwiches in town! This was our second time and order the torta, pastor and carnitas tacos! Everything is delicious! The service is amazing, always greeted with a smile! The restaurant is so cute on the inside with cool artwork and you can even buy t-shirts with some of the artwork on them! This is one of my favorites place in SA!
google avatar

Roland S.

Yelp
I tried torta ahogada and it was delicious. More than enough to you filled up. My wife had the taco chilango and it was stuffed with pork and plenty of cracklings. My wife liked it as well, but said it was too much for her to finish. The service was quick and very helpful. The atmosphere is extremely laid-back and a bit rustic, but very nice.
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
Looking for a delicious quick sandwich? Come here for all your pork tortas! Stopped by before heading to the airport and got a pork butt torta which came with pickled cabbage/onions and some great tomato based dipping sauce. Our to go order came out super quick. Appreciate the staff and cleanliness. Fans available for outside seating. Limited parking.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Ro-Ho is almost literally a hidden gem. You'll find them in an area you'd never think to find a restaurant - in an office industrial area. The building is colorful both inside and out acting as almost a rainbow oasis in this district. The food is nearly as colorful. The star of the menu is pork and only pork. Expect to eat carnitas of some kind here. They arrive rich and savory almost teasing you with the presentation. The meat is juicy, rich, and filling. A nice touch (however a bit visually tacky) is the plastic wrapping over the bowls. It makes clean up an absolute breeze which is rare. I do recommend a visit as you'll be delighted for this new take on an old carnitas classic.
google avatar

Desiree D.

Yelp
This is by far one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in San Antonio. I've never tasted anything like what Chef Rojo is serving up. It's always so clean and the staff is so nice. We've been coming here for over 4 years and each time feels like the first time with the fresh ingredients and the food made with love.
google avatar

Nancy B.

Yelp
What this place offers is so unique. The pulled pork is amazing but I think it is the bread that makes it so good for me. The bread soaks up the sauce without bogging it down if you know what I mean. I need to try something new next time because this was the second visit and I ordered the same thing both times. It is definitely worth a trip out of your way. If I lived closer, I would be there more often. We also tried the little round peanut butter treat they sell at the counter. Get it!! You will like that too!

Alma B.

Yelp
We live in Austin, and we have been driving to eat here for 9 years now. If you want to eat the best Torta Ahoga, this is your place. Not a fan for bread, try the Pastor or the chilaquiles you are going to love it. The customer service is great and always friendly.
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Came here because this has been on my list forever! The place was super clean and they had a 100 on their health score. You order at the counter and sit down. They bring the food out to you. The chips and salsa were okay. The torta was sitting in a sauce and it had already been dipped in the sauce. The sandwich was loaded with meat. You had to put the cabbage and radishes and onions in it your self. This sandwich was a soggy mess. Honestly it had no flavor. It was one note. I was super bummed because I was dying to try this place. The chili killers were the same one note soggy disappointment the sandwich was. The beans had no flavor. The sauce is placed in the bottom of your bowl crispy chips on top beans pork and sour cream feta and onions. Sounds delicious huh? It was flavorless. I so wanted to like this place. Maybe it was an off day! They were busy so obviously people like it.
google avatar

Anang M.

Yelp
What a huge disappointment this turned out to be. It had been on our radar for almost a year and the photos of the food looked amazing. But sadly in this case a picture wasn't worth the 1000 words. Ambience: Clean and bright. Restroom not as clean as one would hope so a 3. Food: Bland soggy sandwich and bowl. It's the same flavorless pork in both dishes we ordered. We got the Torta, the chilekiller and a side of tortilla chips. The chips were hard, the Torta was half diverged in the sauce. Messy to say the least. The chilekiller was also full of some liquid at the bottom. Hard to eat and again nothing to write home about. Sadly even the large amount of red onions on top were unable to save this dish. Food is served in a reusable basket lined with plastic and flimsy disposable cutlery place on top. A 2 for the food. Health score was a 100 which is really great. All in all, a 1 and done for us.

Samantha L.

Yelp
I was first introduced to this restaurant through a yelp elite event and knew I needed to come back! Love their taco chilango- so tasty and sizeable! Tried their pork stomach, mixed. Their tortas ahogadas is so unique too. I've had it with the sauce on the side and also with the sandwich drenched and although visually the pourover looks more unique, the bread does begin to get soggy as you eat it when typically it's very crunchy on the outside. All to say I would recommend the sauce on the side so that you can choose how much you want to use. Plenty of seating, more available outside. Overall fast service and a good experience.
google avatar

Anastasia H.

Yelp
This is my happy place! Enjoyed a vegetarian torta and mixed meat nachos. I dream about this between visits and it took dad coming back to town to get us to come back. I absolutely love every time I come here.

Alejandro C.

Yelp
Not only the best torta ahogada and carnitas tacos you can have in Texas, but the best ever tried including Mexico. RoHo is a must because of the flavor of its food and its authentic Mexican taste. Congrats to all of the team for having the best restaurant in San Antonio. Roho should be considered as a mandatory destination
google avatar

Eduardo R.

Yelp
Wow! 4 start to start delicious pork carnitas, finally a legit place in San Antonio Good price (things are going up!) Location is hard for parking unless I missed something Service is par for the course (kinda self service) you order and they bring your plate you are expected to pick up afterwards so not fancy but they do expect tipping Can't praise the flavor and presentation enough! Want to go back and try everything..... Definitely try out if you are nostalgic about your carnitas..... won't disappoint I see a negative that they close at 9 pm, but I guess this is a hot lunch place maybe no so much for dinner, but one can dream

Yelp
Very hidden, but an absolute gem! First of all, Ro-Ho is SUPER CLEAN! The inside, the outside, almost spotless! On to the food . . . 1. The taco- this was by far my favorite. The corn tortillas are superb! I don't know if the are homemade or bought from a vendor but they are the most superior corn tortillas ever! The carnitas are super moist and juicy, succulent meat chunks perfectly offset by crunchy little chicharrones, and sprinkled with cilantro, red onions, green salsa, and lime juice. The myriad of textures is perfect! I could indulge in one of these tacos every week, and their red salsa is absolute, literal fire. It opened up my sinuses and enhanced my taste buds! Add a few drops gradually, it is super hot! 2. Torta ahogada- Again, a great bunch of textures between the tender juicy meat, the pickled red onions (which if they ever decided to bottle and sell, I'd keep them on hand at all times!) shredded cabbage, radish, and a squeeze of lime juice. The one thing I feel would've taken this to another level would be cheese and toast the bread. I like the bread but it was a bit chewy, I think toasting it would make it a bit easier to bite. The red sauce they give you to dip it in is a bit too much of a tomato flavor for mer personally so I just didn't dip it. 3. The Nachos - The nachos are basically a deconstructed version of the taco. You have layers of beans, tortillas chips (which are again, superb!) meat, shredded cabbage, pickled onions, radish, and lime. Again, maybe it's just me but it was missing cheese!! I can't imagine a world where nachos don't have cheese. The flavor was good but it was just missing that cheesiness. I would've given a 5 star, but the bread could've been toasted a bit on the inside, and cheese would've been a great addition to the torta and the nachos.

Yelp
You can smell how good this place is as soon as you walk in! Select menu, you place order at the counter and they have open seating inside and patio. The service was super quick, the bread was fresh and warm' I would have loved to eat it there but did end up needing it Togo. Even to the Togo was fresh with all the toppings to add. The meat was tender and their main red sauce was delicious. Super great lunch spot, prices are good and love how authentic it tasted.

Yelp
the gringa taco is so good! service is also great and prices reasonable. i can't wait to go back and try more of their menu!

Yelp
Quick and curious service. Food was not only a beautiful presentation but also delicious. Got one of everything to try. Chilazillas were awesome. So was the Al pastor. Restaurant is bright, beautiful and clean. Food is very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
It's one of those place you have to try like once or twice. They got Estrella beer too, so I'm happy!

Yelp
I brought my kids to this taqueria and my oldest never forgot how amazingly delicious these tacos are because a couple of weeks later they were craving more of these delicious and one of a kind tacos with pork Rhine, carnitas, purple onion drizzled in guacamole sauce that blends the flavors to perfection! The chilango tacos are our favorite. It's not the same if you don't add the lime juice in the end. It gives it one last zest to the flavor of the taco. Leaving my daughters dance class the place was quietly full of people eating at 8pm still. Come get your fill of these tacos. They are 'unforgettable'! Yes a little pricey but they are full tacos, not your ordinary street taco! They mean business when they serve you a taco! They take it to your table! Love me some Roho tacos!...we'll back soon!

Yelp
Absolute gem here in San Antonio. The torta was amazingly cooked and seasoned with incredibly sauce on the side. The torta itself was very filling. The el pastor tacos were also great size and deal for the price of 2 tacos for 4 dollars. I was very impressed and will be back in the future definitely. The service was quick and great as well. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Customer service was exceptional!!! Food was scrumptious, flavorful ,and fresh. We were unsure of what to order so the cashier asked if we would like to sample the pork this definitely made our option for our order easier. In ordered the Taco Chilango and we ordered the salad bowl with carnitas They are now open on Sundays and have A margarita and piña colada frozen machine not to mention micheladas Cueritos, Carnitas, de puerco at its finest perfection

Yelp
Torta Ahogada was so good, had the order to go and it was packed perfectly. Tomato sauce on the side with cabbage and picked red onions. Tasted great!

Yelp
We went back and enjoyed it as much as the first time. Simple menu and delicious food. We all had tacos with chips and guacamole, but I'm not sure why I didn't try the sandwich. I need to go back because that bread looks so amazing.

Yelp
Very nice staff! The food was very yummy. Even better than the Mexican food I've had in San Diego. I strongly recommend the strawberry horchata.

Yelp
Insta @ dish_360 Place is nice and clean. Offers outdoor and indoor seating. Staff was friendly and service was quick. IMO this place is perfect if you're trying to recover from a hangover. Good portion size, lots of sauce, salsa packs a kick. It just didn't make me want to come back. There was nothing "wrong" but nothing memorable. Torta fans please grab your napkins and give it a try. It didn't check all my boxes but it might check yours. Insta @ dish_360

Yelp
It has been a long time since I've written a review well because nothing has really surprised me lately. Until now wow this place is not only cool when it comes to vibes and decor the food is outstanding. I had the Tortha Ahogada and let me tell you it was amazing it was like a Mexico Tortha met a Salvadoran Panes sandwich. You have to stop here once you land in San Antonio I'm telling you this place should be a must stop location.
