The 38 Essential Pittsburgh Restaurants

"“New York-style pizza” is too often used as a generic term for American pies cooked in a gas-fueled oven. So when you find a true example of the thinish, foldable delight far outside the five boroughs, it’s cause for jubilation. Josh Sickels hewed to the classics when he opened in a Pittsburgh suburb in 2017, gradually embracing the “third/new wave” style of pizzaiolo using high-quality ingredients and bakers’ techniques without trying to reinvent the wheel. Rockaway’s tray pizzas (especially the upside-down) and specialty builds like white clam pie are also a celebration of craft. Good news for city folk — Sickels will move the operation to Regent Square later this year." - Melissa McCart, Hal B. Klein

Newly relocated to Regent Square in 2025, Rockaway draws lines for long-fermented dough and pan-baked grandma pies. Axios recently chronicled its surge in popularity and regular sellouts.

Have been wanting to try this since it moved into the neighborhood. Solid pizza for sure. There is typically always a wait so make sure to call well in advance to order for pick up. We got the Caesar salad and the Vodka pie. Salad was good and dressing was tasty, like that they add anchovies. The sauce on the pizza was perfect, but I think we ended up with the smoked mozzarella on ours instead of fresh, which was still good but would’ve preferred the fresh! Crust is the perfect thinness. Overall great addition to the neighborhood!

My daughter visited this place for the first time. Afterwards she insisted that I go. She said, “mom you are going to LOVE the pizza!” and she was 100% correct!!! The pizza was so good!!! The crust was thin and crispy, the sauce was balanced in taste and proportion to the crust & cheese ratio; there was a perfect amount of pepperoni. Our plan was to get a whole pizza but it would have been a 30 minute wait, which was too long for us on that (hangry🙃) day, so we got slices. The slices were so fresh and savory. Truly New York style. The service was great. While we stood in line the cashier remembered my daughter from her first visit and complimented her outfit. The shop was super busy but, the cashier (I didnt get her name) was patient & took time to engage and answer our questions. I didn’t feel rushed which I appreciated because they were super busy. Since my initial visit I have been back 3 times and each time was pleasant and the food was superb. I tried a Sicilian slice and the crust was something I’ve never experienced before. It gave ciabatta vibes and I was pleasantly surprised. Another visit I got an Italian Hoagie and it was so good, very flavorful! The bread was crispy on the outside and soft inside the combination of meats/cheese was perfect. Last weekend my daughter ordered takeout, a whole pizza with basil, onions and pepperoni. It was 🔥 This place is my new favorite

First time I’ve had Rockaway. I really enjoyed the pizza. We got the white pizza. Which I thought was amazing!! Smokey from the oven., with ricotta tomatoes and garlic. It was well worth the wait and I would definitely recommend and will most definitely be making a return

This pizza is so good, I understand why the owner goes on lengthy rants on Google Reviews. The Vodka Pie was outstanding: crispy crust and great sauce and cheese. The wait time was long, given how popular they are, but accurate within five minutes of when told it would be ready. Price is higher compared to many PGH pizza places, but in line with other pizzas that are also of higher quality, so no complaints. You get what you pay for. The people working there were great. Friendly towards me and very helpful to the people behind me who didn’t know what they wanted. As long as you plan ahead (think 1.5-2 hours wait for a to go pie), it’s well worth the visit

Google
Hands down the BEST pizza I’ve ever had in Pittsburgh, maybe even anywhere! This place is the real deal. No chain gimmicks, just honest, high-quality, true pizza made with care and passion. You can taste the difference in every bite. Yes, they sell out and honestly, that should tell you everything. We showed up once and they were already sold out for the day. Instead of being upset, we just knew we had to come back. And we did. And WOW… it was absolutely worth it. We dined in and every moment of the experience matched the quality of the food. You can tell they’re doing something special here. I almost don’t want to post this because I know the lines will get longer, but this place deserves all the love. To anyone reading the reviews: don’t let the sold-out comments deter you let them motivate you. Get there early, plan ahead if you can. You will not regret it. This is the kind of pizza that makes you believe in pizza again.

Google
Best pizza in the city. Hoagies are also unreal. Can’t go wrong with anything. Highly recommended the honey pie, any grandma pie and the Italian hoagie or any hoagie honestly.

Google
Great largely NY style pizza with a slight pgh lean at certain times. Top of that kind in the city Classic good thought out ny crust. Well done, touch of burnt, w chew. Quality tomato sauce and quality in general. Edge of crust can be a little less flavored bready - the kind your kids wouldn’t finish. Overall flavor is reasonable, balanced. Not bland, not crazy flavor that might turn off a few. Overall - it’s great. Note They have other slices too - eg a sorter thinner Sicilian like called grandma. Very good. Vibe in there has a traditional feel. descent amounts of seating. Nothing too bad nothing too exciting. Simple gets the job done pizza place vibe. Pricing is mixed. The slices can be a good value at $3 ish and sometimes more, but whole pies are at the high end. Before tip your at $28 for a one topping large. Add the recco tip of course and you are paying $33-$34 for a large pep. Kinda hard to stomach personally That said, at the end of the day the food is king and this place is tops. Pizza Lupo and here are like brothers, both borrowing heavy from all great Brooklyn and nyc pizza and bringing us pgh’ers something great. I could eat here everyday and honestly just might

Google
THE BEST pizza I've EVER had!!! But a very chill atmosphere and all of the staff here are extremely friendly kind people, a great spot to hang with friends and have just some good pizza.

Yelp
Rockaway Pizza is hands down the best New York-style pizza in the Pittsburgh area, if not the best pizza in the city altogether. We always go for the margherita, and it's perfect every time--authentic, flavorful, and with that signature thin crust that's crispy yet chewy in all the right places. While their White Oak location is currently closed as they relocate to Regent Square, we can't wait for them to reopen. If you're a fan of true New York-style pizza, keep an eye out for Rockaway Pizza's new spot--it's well worth the wait!

Yelp
A friend told us to try this pizza. I was pleasantly surprised, I like Sicilian pizza. Pepperonis a little zippy but for some Iam sure it's great. I really liked the meatball hoagie, great meatballs, lots of cheese and not a sloppy with sauce, just the right amount. The sausage hoagie is good, I like link sausage but the slices really didn't bother me. Highly recommend!! We will order again.

Yelp
This place is a hit every single time! The food is simply amazing. Great ingredients perfect amounts and always fresh. Service is impeccable always greeted with a smile and a good word. It is small but there is dining area that's always clean and available. My only complaint is they run out of dough to often on the weekends so get you order in early like i do and don't miss out.

Anthony R.

Yelp
Whoever cooked this has no clue how the crust is supposed to be on a pizza. Burnt as hell! Was very excited to try this place since it got an 8.2 review from the barstool guy. I would rate it a 6.2 at best due to the crust. Extremely disappointed. Unlikely to ever come back here.

Yelp
My husband watched a show called "Pittsburgh Today Live" and in this show a dining critic from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette - Hal B. Klein reported that Rockaway was finalist runner up for best pizza in Pittsburgh; raving about their pizza. Being that my husband is a self proclaimed pizza connoisseur, he took this on as a challenge and just had to give Rockaway Pizzeria a try. Husband called at 5pm and was told to pick up his pizza order in about 50-55 minutes. My husband arrived at 6pm, 1 hour later and had to wait another 20 minutes more once he arrived. He ordered a regular round pepperoni and a square Carsosa pizza. We enjoyed both pizzas. We probably should have gotten a bit of variety. Husband went crazy and ordered 2 pepperoni pizzas. Pizza sauce was good and sauce flavorful. Was not overly oily or heavy. Crust had a nice bite on both. I preferred the square cut and I would have had my husband order a plain next time. Tastes a little like Napolis in Miracle Mile in Monroeville. We came and we tried. It was good. 4.

Yelp
Rockaway pizza is extraordinary! The doh, the toppings, the cheese are all top quality and brought together with perfect execution. Not your average PA pizza, very little grease on the bottom of the box ;) I would drive an hour and a half for this pizza!
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
At this point I can pretty much say I've had everything on the menu. I can also say it's all perfect. I will continue to drive out from the city on a regular basis for this crazy good pizza.
google avatar

Sean F.

Yelp
I had many people proclaim this to be the best pizza in the area, so I was super-eager to try it out. I got there when they first opened and they only had 2 pies out of the oven, so I opted for two slices of pepperoni. I will say that the crust was darn-near perfect. But the sauce was lackluster, and the cheese and pepperoni didn't wow me like I was expecting. Overall, a disappointment, but I'd be willing to give them another try, maybe a whole pie next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the White Pizza and it was so good! The girl that helped me was sweet and went out of her way to help even though she was busy taking phone orders. It has a few tables but mainly is a takeout place. I definitely will be back when in Pittsburgh. Go there you won't be sorry!!!!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
First visit ever I ordered the Mamma's Pie with Pepperoni. I can see why Rockaway is so highly rated. This is excellent pizza, with the highest quality ingredients. Definitely going back.
google avatar

Mary-Michael M.

Yelp
This stuff is amazing. Truly it's what people who live in the city drive out to the burbs to get who are in the know. Its not crazy trendy and cool, an unassuming place in a what I think is White Oak. Where they are worth every penny is their food. And there are several amazing places that serve pizza in the area. This is one of the best.

Yelp
We were in the area for a baseball tournament, so we decided to give RP a try. We'd tried to stop here several years ago, but they were closed. It doesn't look like much from the outside, so I was slightly apprehensive. When you walk in, it has serious "Clerks" vibes. The gentleman at the counter was very welcoming. I told him that we were first timers and asked him for recommendations. He said The Honey Pie was pretty popular, so we ordered that, along with an order of garlic knots and an Italian hoagie for my husband. The hoagie and the knots came out first, piping hot, but delicious. The Honey Pie came shortly afterwards. I was taken aback by its ginormous size. I had to let it sit for a few moments because it, too, was super hot. But, when I took my first bite? OMG. I had to pause before I could answer my husband's question about how it was in order to gather my thoughts. The crust was thin, but sturdy and crispy. The sauce was fresh, the pepperoni spicy with crispy edges, the ricotta creamy and perfectly distributed. But, what brought it all together was the honey. It wasn't overwhelming, but was the perfect complement to the other ingredients. Salty and sweet on a pizza? It was a true revelation. Thank you to the gentleman behind the counter for the suggestion, and thank you to the chef who made our deliciously memorable meal. If we're ever back in White Oak for any reason (or, we have a hankering for some of the best pizza in Pgh, despite the 55-minute drive from our house), we'll be back.

Yelp
Rockaway is always delicious and it's on our regular list of pizza places. Weekends can get crazy with long waits and selling out. We typically try to order on a weeknight. Upside down Vodka Sauce Sicilian is our go to but it's nice trying other things as well. The Sicilian is definitely a lot of food. We had been in the mood so decided to order on a Tuesday. We figured it wouldn't be crazy busy and ordered while we were out doing errands. We tried to do our usual and the girl said it wasn't available today so I said we would look at the menu and call back. We had been wanting to try the Grandma pie so tried that only to be told that wasn't available either because it was too busy. I feel they could have said anything that wasn't available when I first called. We decided to get the vodka margherita and the lasagna pie. We were told it would be ready in 45 minutes so timed things out to get there. It wound up taking closer to an hour and 15 minutes to be ready. Luckily I hadn't taken my medicine (to be taken 30 minutes before eating) until my SO said the pies were up. They also did not come out at the same time so one was hot while one was warm. I get places get busy but especially when they are busy frequently I would hope for a little closer estimates for when an order will be ready. There were several people there waiting in the same situation. The pizza was delicious and we have been going for years so will obviously return. Just hoping to see better estimates on wait times and accurate information on what is and isn't available. Funny enough Rockaway just posted on social media about weekend wait times and said Tuesdays are best so maybe we hit an off week.

Debbie L.

Yelp
Great pizza but my order was wrong. I order 2 cheese pizzas with pepperoni and my son picked up the order not knowing that I only ordered 2 pizzas but was given and paid for four! They were delicious but my neighbor benefited from the abundant order. You can tell that quality cheese and products are used on their pizzas. Delicious!
google avatar

Penny T.

Yelp
Their bread for both pizza and hoagie is AWESOME. Toasted in perfect crunchy style. Pizza is memorable. Hoagie is super tasty too. Willing to drive 40+ min to come over here. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
I travel to NYC yearly. This pizza has the cut size right. The toppings right. Sauce right. Crust, well you get it. The only issue is you cannot replace the water used in NYC crust. There is just something about dirty water being used that creates a one of a kind flavor. However, this pizza is absolutely delicious. Cooked perfectly and on time. I highly recommend this pizza.

Deborah H.

Yelp
The Sicilian pizza is amazing. I wish we had found your restaurant sooner. You have some of the best tasting pizza in White Oak.

Leon H.

Yelp
Very good pizza made with/ high quality ingredients & friendly staff. The inside of the place could use a remodel.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious pizza with great variety. We got the white pizza, pepperoni, and Frankenstein. Beyond any typical takeout place with a crunchy, charred crust and high-quality ingredients.
google avatar

Sydney G.

Yelp
Of all the local pizza places I have tried, Rockaway is my favorite!! I have tried a couple pizzas from here, but the honey pie is by far the best! It comes with a ton of ricotta, pepperoni, and hot honey drizzled on top. The crust is the perfect combo of thin and crusty. They only have one size, but it comes with 8 giant slices. They have some seating in the pizza shop, but we always just pick up a pizza for takeout. You have to call to order, and sometimes wait a while on hold before being able to place the order, but it is always well worth it!
google avatar

Yelp
We made the trek from city of Pittsburgh to Rockaway in White Oak and wow wow wow - it was worth every second of the drive!! The pizza is fantastic. All round pizzas are 18 inches, 8-cut pies, authentic NY style. They also have a squared Sicilian Pie (takes 45 minutes) and is worth the wait! It can be ordered in whole or half size, 12 or 6 cuts. I ordered the 6 cut Sicilian, vegan with no cheese, topped with mushrooms and arugula. Absolutely FANTASTIC. Wow. The dough was so perfectly crispy with such a light and airy center - haven't had much Sicilian in my life but man, so so good. Sauce was fresh and seasoned to perfection, not too sweet, not too many spices. It's a standard pizza parlor, with several booths for inhouse seating. Looking forward to coming back again and trying the round pie next time.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Love this pizza place. Wish it was closer to my house. I always order the Sicilian Pizza it takes 45 minutes to cook because they don't precook the dough which dries out the dough and makes the pizza terrible. I order the full pie for pizza parties for the offices I visit and the teams always are appreciative. I understand all of their pizza is great. Also if you go in they have a video arcade game with a bunch of games that you can play while you wait for your pizza. Enjoy we always do!
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
Just your usual little neighborhood type pizza joint... but if you want a real NY style pie, this is the place. Very nice people.

Charles M.

Yelp
Sicilian pizza was excellent.came out when promised .Staff was courteous and friendly!
google avatar

Lenard B.

Yelp
Best New York Style Pizza I've ever had, including NYC. I've had almost all of their specality pizzas and they are all great. Never disappoints.

Chris S.

Yelp
Lives up to the hype. Excellent New York style pizza. Glad to have wandered in. Easy to miss and plain inside. However, quality of food stand out.
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
I had heard great things about this place, but it is a little out of the way, so had never got to try it. Very happy I finally did this past week. My wife and I ordered a pizza and garlic knots on a Friday night, which is obviously going to be a busy time. They send you a text when your pizza actually goes into the oven. This is the first pizza place I've seen do this and thought it was a great idea to avoid having to sit for a long time waiting for your pizza to come out fresh or risk having the pizza be sitting before you pick it up. Both the pizza and the garlic knots were delicious. It is very authentic New York style pizza, so very thin crust and large slices. The crust had a great crispness and char to it. The cheese and sauce were perfect as well. The garlic knots were also some of the best I've ever had. I ordered two sides of ranch with the pizza which went great with the crust. They put the ranch containers in a separate bag, rather than most places that put it in the same container as the hot food and for some reason think you want steaming hot ranch.
google avatar

Nick H.

Yelp
The most incredible pizza experience in Pittsburgh. Worth any drive you got... perfect pizzeria.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
My dad taught me that when you move to a new location, one of the first things to do is find a good pizza place. I followed this advice everywhere I've lived, but when I moved to the Mon Valley, I struggled to find a solid pizza place. Something non-commercial that has flavor and reminds me of home. I mean when you grow up outside of Boston, MA and have lived in NYC, you're pizza standards are high. Someone told me that if I'm looking for a solid slice to try Rockaway. Looking at the menu, I thought the Frankenstein would be a good place to start. A pizza split in quarters - pepperoni, cheese, white, and bianca. Each slice was better than the next! The dough had so much flavor and the chew was perfection. Now THIS was pizza!!! Not too heavy on the sauce, not a grease-bomb... A true New York style pizza... in White Oak of all places!!! Since that fateful day when I was introduced to Rockaway I've tried the Big Salad (fresh mozzarella, romaine, penne, and other veg with the Italian dressing), Garlic Knots (yummy greasy goodness), and almost every pizza on the menu. My personal favorite is the white pizza - ricotta, tomatoes, garlic - even my toddler loves it!!! Thank you, Rockaway for giving me a literal slice of home. Whenever I'm craving real pizza, I'm ordering from Rockaway.

Cheryl W.

Yelp
The best pizza around....the workers are very friendly...never miserable It's a quiet place to dine in... Very clean The pie is huge and it's our families favorite!
google avatar

Carmela R.

Yelp
Did I just find my new favorite pizza place? Great menu - it was really hard to choose, roasted pepper garlic knots were a suggestion from a friend and they didn't disappoint, perfect amount of garlic and flavor in each bite, but not overdone or greasy. Grandma's Pie was the pizza of choice, thin and crispy crust, fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato sauce. Impeccable flavoring.. sesame seeds on the bottom was the perfect end to a bite. I wasn't a huge fan of square pizza until now. Can't wait to go back and try more on the menu, definitely a lot of different pizza options you won't find anywhere else. I ordered take out, 45 min wait which is reasonable. I hear that it does get crazy busy on the weekends (I can certainly see why!!) so I'd call ahead. There is also seating inside if you're dining in. Prices reasonable for a pizza place with specialty pizzas.
google avatar

Christopher J.

Yelp
Being from Brooklyn, NY I know what world class pizza is and I believe Rockaway makes better pizza than many long established NYC pizza joints. These guys have a passion for pizza and they have a process for the dough and the ingredients that make for a close to perfect pizza experience. They are a little out of the way in White Oak but worth the drive from Pittsburgh. Highly recommended.

Lynn H.

Yelp
Great pizza...super fresh ingredients! Crust and sauce are out of this world! Highly recommend!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Excellent pizza, not skimpy on toppings and crust cooked to an excellent leopard style. Can get busy but always worth the wait.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Pizza is New York style! Nice chewy crust. Delicious! Service was excellent. Super friendly staff!
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Amazing authentic pizza! Try the Sicilian it's unbelievable! New York style was really good too
google avatar

Dennis M.

Yelp
First time 6/15/2022 Excellent! We shared the "Grandma Pizza" Delicious. Very well chosen ingredients prepared and baked perfectly. The owner said people come from all over for this particular, unique pizza. We will return very soon for this and maybe for one of the many other special pizzas. Thank you Rockaway Pizza.

Christine H.

Yelp
Always an amazing pizza! All of their pizzas are great, my favorites are the white with ricotta cheese on it, and a regular red sauce pie with pepperoni and mushrooms. They've always been friendly and accommodating, the absolute best pizza in Pittsburgh!
google avatar

Hailey G.

Yelp
Always friendly and convenient service. Also a good place to sit down for lunch and has a few arcade machines Food is always hot and they have a good selection of choices. The music could be a little lower at times.

Michelle T.

Yelp
I grew up in the area on Luciano's pizza but coming in to visit and meet up with old friends we landed at Rockaway. What a great find. The pizzas were creative and delicious. The crust was thin but supportive of the toppings, it had flavor but it didn't scream over the toppings but blended perfectly. We ordered the bacon garlic knots with artichoke dip, then onto the Artichoke fancy pizza....Bacon, spinach, artichoke with a mascarpone cream sauce and mozzarella. Heads up there is 1 size of pizza, 18 inches in 8 slices. They do have a Sicilian option too. You will wait for your pizza but not because they are slow, it's because they are just that busy. The owner obviously loves a great pizza and music too. The only thing I could gripe about is a few more soft drink options in the cooler ( I can always bring my own when I return) and the lack of lighting in the parking lot (beware of the parking space curb stops, they bite and trip the customers ankles) I may need a flashlight next time. I will definitely be back when I'm in town I need to try the clam, the honey and the eggplant, then it will be time to get creative. Nom, nom, nom!
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
This place reopened this past weekend and there is a reason they sold out of pizza quickly. It's because their pizza is worth more than gold to me. I finally have found the perfect slice in Western PA. I also had the garlic knots and gigantic meatball parm hoagie which was amazing and fresh. This place is not just great for western PA, but I also think it could come toe to toe with some of the great pizza joints in Brooklyn. Do yourself a favor, in the next few weeks, get in hour car and visit this shop since it will make any cold day feel warm. Cheers
google avatar

DJ J.

Yelp
If you are looking for a NY pizza, Rockway rocks. Stopped by and just ordered a couple of slices. The slices were out lickety split. The person working was very friendly. The pizza is very good. If I lived in the neighborhood it could be my go to place. Anyway, if you are in the neighborhood be sure to stop and get a slice.
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
The white pizza is absolutely delicious just like everything else. I do have a preference for the spinach since I prefer spinach to tomatoes in general. You can't go wrong with either. Individual slices go quick so you've got to get there early.

Glenn E.

Yelp
Garbage pizza. Basically it's a standalone Sbarro's but not even that good. I was looking forward to going here and living out in the North Hills is quite a trek. I could live next door and I wouldn't walk over to have this pizza again. The place is also utterly filthy.
google avatar

Stuart O.

Yelp
This is really awesome pizza. My wife got 3 of these for a high school cross country gathering. Thin crust, fresh ingredients, not super saucy. I was out of town and jealous to miss out...BUT...there were leftovers and this pizza holds up as leftovers. Heated in a toaster oven and it was still Delicious. We have definitely found a new favorite pizza place!

Robert J.

Yelp
The honey pie was great. This was a bit of drive from Brentwood but worth the ride for this particular pizza. Was not impressed with the Sicilian slice as it didn't seem re-baked like I'm accustomed to it was cold but still flavorful. Though it could've been and just sat while the main pie cooked. The pepperoni knots were also very good.

Aaron C.

Yelp
Not the easiest to get a hold of em, but the pizza slaps Especially the vodka sauce

Jess B.

Yelp
Rockaway is a rock-inspired semi hole in the wall....and it's literally the best pizza we've had. We get the NY style and it's amazing. My husband is elated that they have green olives as well (not the case with a lot of places). Is the wait really long on weekends? Yes. Is it worth the 1.5-2 hour wait? Totally. Just plan well in advance. We drive a good 20 minutes to get the pizza and it's well worth it. Parking lot is small, but it's next to a larger lot with a couple other businesses, so it's pretty easy to nab a spot to run in and grab your food.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Amazing pizza and great taste. They don't skimp on toppings....best pizza in western PA
