Best Brunch Restaurants in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Some mornings you want a pastry. Some mornings you want ramen. Some mornings the kids want ice cream. At Rose’s you can get all three in one place, making it perhaps the Bull City’s most mix-and-matchable brunch option. The savory side trends Southeast Asian, and during weekend brunch the menu expands to include Asian breakfast classics like congee and pho. On the pastry side, the bakery case changes frequently but there are almost always hand pies, cookies, and of course plenty of ice cream sandwiches." - Matt Lardie

This is a very unique place! The bakery is the highlight, their pastries and cakes are amazing. I especially loved the cinnamon carrot cake cheesecake and the passion fruit tres leches. I wasn’t as impressed with the savory foods here. The spring rolls were mostly filled with rice noodles, and the sandwich was good but overpriced and lacked structural integrity. Menu and baked goods seem to be constantly changing so it’s hard to know what you’ll get when you go, which is hard if you find a favorite dish that then disappears or prefer planning your meal, or it can be good if you like a surprise and variation and adventure. Staff are super nice.

Google
delicious! they say all their ingredients are locally sourced and you can tell. small menu but everything was AMAZING. limited seating so go early or make a reservation. we got seated right away at 5pm on a Friday but it was packed soon after

Google
Favorite spot in Durham! I always bring visitors from out of town here for lunch. All ingredients are so fresh and flavorful. Can’t go wrong with the steam buns, belt noodle bowls and a baked good!

Google
Really cool spot, we ordered the noodles/ the steamed buns / the dumplings *pickle / and a radicchio salad. They have they’re own style of everything like the ramen tasted unique, the dumplings the same, feels like walking into your aunties house for food you notice that her food just is different, good but different! The salad was not for me as far as the texture, but everything else was delightful, fun to try!

Google
Found this place while visiting Durham. There were no bad bites. Every bite was delicious. The food is good I would eat it again. I would recommend this spot to others. The desserts are an absolute must have.

Google
Cozy environment, very delicious, quality food. They have an extensive dessert bar which we enjoyed too. Waiting staff is very accommodating and nice. Menu is very straightforward which I really liked too. 10/10 would go again 🤗

Google
This place is a little weird. To start off, almost everything has pork, so you already know that limits the menu to less than a handful of options to choose from as someone who doesn’t eat pork. Secondly, a little overpriced for a semi self serve restaurant. My noodle bowl was $18. Thirdly, if I hadn’t paid attention, I wouldn’t have realized that they charge you 4% MANDATORY hidden fee to cover THEIR vacations, and THEIR 401k, and THEIR insurance. Let me help myself before helping others! When I asked what this automatic charge is, the cashier pointed at the little sign on the counter explaining why. Pretty disgusting if you ask me. This should not be a mandatory fee whatsoever, but an optional one. While the veggies noodles (one of the only thinks I can get on their menu) was okay, because of hidden behavior like this, I won’t be returning back.

Google
I'll start with a compliment: the patisserie and pastry looked excellent. I've worked in commercials kitchens and restaurants before and it's clear that the baker and pastry staff are very skilled at what they do. Service and seatint was chaotic, we had reservations and got stuck in bar-style seating against the wall in the corner of the restaurant and had to flag down our serving staff at every interaction except when I believe it was one of the owners brought our food to the table. The ramen that I had resembled ramen aesthetically but that's kinda where the connection with the art of Japanese ramen ended. It wasn't bad, but I would have ordered something else if I knew was going to be paying NYC prices. I don't think I'm personally going to go back because I was really disappointed with my dish and the price-point doesn't justify the quality of either of the noodle dishes we sampled, but they clearly do a lot of business and everyone seemed friendly. I'm including a picture of the momofuku (a multiple Michelin star restaurant run by David Chang) menu featuring the same dish I ordered at the same exact point and I don't see how they can justify charging the same price as a 2-star Michelin chef does in NYC in a market anywhere in North Carolina.

Yelp
If their ramen is as good as the desserts, I will definitely be running back. The chocolate buttermilk cake is amazing. I am so mad at myself for not grabbing 2 or 3...or the rest of the case. It was moist, buttery and had the right level of chocolate. The parking lot is a tight fit. Perhaps there is parking elsewhere, but in front of the spot is very tight. It is very unique, clean and chic on the inside. The workers were busy working. We were still acknowledged when we entered. Their baked goods and ordering station is closer to the back. The cake was packaged well. I'm so sad that I already had something to eat prior to arriving because looking at the other patrons meals, the food looked amazing! The aromas wafting throughout were intoxicating. I also ordered some chocolate wafers. Didn't get a picture. You all are lucky I got a picture of the cake, because the wafers were equally delicious. Definitely a place to visit. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
An absolute gem that is now amongst my favorite spots in the area. While small, this establishment has plenty to offer. Firstly the food, every item tasted fantastic, packed with fresh ingredients and flavor, each dish was presented beautifully and the care taken into its preparation was very apparent. From the noodle's, dumplings, and sandwiches to the delectable pastry selection, nothing failed to exceed expectations. Even the coffee was fantastic. The interior was a bit on the smaller side but offered plenty of seating for smaller groups, and there was also some seating outdoors for when the weather allows. It fills up fairly quickly though so I would recommend getting a reservation. The décor was well curated and ambiance was quite inviting. There was even a bar seating option looking into the open kitchen, which was quite fun. Everything about this place was charming, even small details like the tableware and coffee cups. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, providing excellent service. The prices were also quite fair. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning

Yelp
I think it should be noted that 1. I'm currently in an all things Japanese phase obsession (have faith, that will change shortly). 2. While I'm no aficionado, I've come to realize Ramen is a general term for a style of noodles in a broth. So it's best not to compare apples to steak (or something like that) as broth and noodle choices vary. On this particular day, we ordered the Katsu sando and Soy Tonkotsu Ramen to go. The Katsu is a pork cutlet dressed with cabbage, with a sweet mayo sauce. We incorrectly assumed a chicken cutlet. Perhaps due to travel or false expectations we thought the meat was slightly, on the tough side. Also, perhaps due to condensation thought the cutlet could have been a tad bit crunchier. I appreciated the shaved cabbage that provided a textural element we found pleasing. This particular version of milk bread resembled a delicious old school sandwich bread. Overall, we thought it was good. As one would assume, the Soy Tonkotsu Ramen had a soy forward aesthetic. The noodles, were good. A different texture than I've had elsewhere (a firmer texture), but delicious nonetheless. We enjoy spice, so most likely will add a spicy element to my preference. Overall a good meal. Japanese: 4.1
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
I'm conflicted. Came here twice, got the katsu sando and belt noodles, and something from the bakery each time. In the katsu sando, the pork cutlet was alright but the milk bread was disappointing - it was tough and the texture was off. The belt noodles were a miss too. The noodles themselves were good but completely drowned out by the chili oil that smothered the entire dish. All the vegetables were on the bottom beneath the noodles too, so they were also doused in chili oil. There was no room for any flavor that was not spicy and it tasted like there wasn't even any salt in there, so the whole thing just turned out bland. Atmosphere is alright. It's rather small inside but I could see it being cozy. Staff are nice, but it did take 20-30 min for food to come out after ordering. Food is way too overpriced considering the quality and also it being Durham. The bakery, on the other hand, is great. They seem to have a rotating selection of baked goods. The mochi cake was amazing. 5 stars for the bakery & 1 star for everything else.
google avatar

Tammy H.

Yelp
Oh no, I'm not sure what happened between the time of my last review and today, but the belt noodles now are with pork and tangy turmeric broth rather than the prior braised beef. This is definitely NOT as good as the braised beef. The small bits of pork were completely unflavored... The consistency of the noodles were still chewy, so that was fine. But please go back to the prior braised beef set.

Yelp
The food was delicious - spouse still talks about his. I had a Szechuan noodle dish which was good. The pickled vegetables were crunchy and lightly pickled - not too strong, but nice flavor. The steamed bun was huge and tasty; it was almost too big for an appetizer, but I managed to eat it all. ;-) Spouse had a cake that looked like a bundt cake but tasted mochi-like ("that was good" he said, looking at the photo). However the service was slow - which would have been ok, but it was super crowded and cold. AND the lights are so strong and industrial that it wasn't a great atmosphere to wait in. You can see the harsh shadows in the photos. 3 points for atmosphere and 5+ points for the food itself.

Thao L.

Yelp
I'm going to give them 4 stars because I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on their other dishes and for the pastries. They were delicious. BUTTT I will say the chili oil in the belt noodle dishes is brutal! My boyfriend and I went to try both belt noodle dishes and he loves spicy foods but this was something different. (I personally think that the Szechuan peppercorn isn't our spice - it numbs your mouth and almost leaves it feeling dry even though it's not) I understand it's an acquired taste, I'm just giving warning cause it took us by surprise. It's spicy guys. The staff is nice and it was very cute. I will definitely come back to try the other dishes but I'm out here to say, if you can't handle heat ask the spice/ chili oil on the side

Yelp
I'd go back! Overall, the food is great. First I ordered some tea. The tea was great! It tasted so good. I would definitely get tea here if you can. Then I got the dumplings and broccoli salad. Broccoli salad was good. The vegetables were super fresh! But the dumplings were way better! I loved the pork inside the dumplings. The filling was so juicy and flavorful!!! And the chili oil was so good. It was the perfect level of spice for me. It was really flavorful, but not too strong that I couldn't finish it. For dessert, I got a chocolate galette. It was SO good. It was a little pricy ($9!!) but honestly it was worth it . The crust was super flaky and caramelized. Ambiance is pretty good! I love an open kitchen. And I love how they have outdoor seating. Finally, service was pretty good. My food came really quickly and everyone was pretty nice. My main suggestion for improvement, though, would be to have a host / hostess at the front when you walk in. It's a little confusing figuring out what to do / how to get a table when you walk in.

Karoline N.

Yelp
Yummy! Interesting flavors on both the "smashed" salads - the cucumber one is spicy! The broccoli one is just delicious! We also enjoyed two desserts - the strawberry roll cake and a chocolate cake with a little peanut butter candy on the top - fantastic!

Yelp
Overall delicious food with decent portion size. Only slight downside was our server didn't come back after we asked for something and it was hard to get anyone's attention after waiting at the counter for a while. I understand it's busy so not a huge deal but it is notable.

Yelp
Loved Rose's when I lived in Durham. The ice cream sandwiches were amazing, with such creative flavors! The noodles were also very delicious.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
This is a unique little restaurant that specializes in noodles and desserts (what a fun combo!). We came in on a Sunday afternoon and it was not too busy. It is small and cozy inside, so expect to be seated close to your neighbors, but it's not an issue and they also seem to do quite a bit of takeout. We ordered the Hot and Sour Sweet Potato noodles which had great flavor, but I do wish I would have been aware of the amount of Szechuan pepper used because it has a weird, mouth-numbing effect that made it hard for me to get through (rookie mistake on my part). The ramen had good flavor but was a bit salty for my preference. I'd like to come back and try some other noodle options as well as their salads, since those looked fantastic. The curry bun was my favorite item!
google avatar

Aubrey P.

Yelp
The desserts are always fantastic, the katsu sando is a must order, and the salads are always creative and fresh. The hand pulled noodles are decent but often very salty; it's also worth noting that the sensation caused by the Sichuan pepper can be bizarre if you aren't prepared for it. Now, unfortunately where Rose's loses major points is with the service. If it was once, fine. Twice, okay. But 3+ visits where the service has been awful makes me think it's a theme. Being ignored upon entering, eye rolls when asking questions, standoffish wait staff. Unpleasant and off-putting. It's a shame because the food is worth it. Consider take out if you don't want to leave feeling like a burden.
google avatar

Stella Y.

Yelp
This is a pretty good place if you're looking for Asian fusion. It's kinda disguised as a cafe and have both indoor and outdoor seating. They have sandwiches, salads, and appetizers but I think they're known for their noodles. I got the house made belt noodles with ground pork, sesame paste, broccolini, sichuan peppercorn, and peanuts. If you love spicy, this is for you. The sauce is all on the bottom so you'll need to mix it but after you do, it's super flavorful and numbing, with a lot of spices. Definitely needed a couple glasses of water! The noodles were nice and chewy and you can tell that it's handmade. The bowl may look normal but it's a lot of food! Wish I had enough room for dessert because their display cases of dessert looked so good!

Yelp
Based on Rose's Soy Tonkotsu Ramen (best ramen I've had in the state), Housemade Belt Noodles, Ice Cream Sandwiches, and Macarons, I have to give Rose's five stars. Not everything we had here was great, but each of those particular items was outstanding. I like and recommend this place. Rose's is located in the Brightleaf neighborhood of northwest downtown Durham. At the time of writing this review, you can park for free directly in front of the restaurant in the spots marked "Fencers Club Reserved" because the fencing business has permanently closed. You can also park for free in the spacious Brightleaf Square parking lot across N Gregson St and, a little further away, in the lot at the corner of S Gregson and W Main. Rose's originally opened in 2013 as "Rose's Meat Market & Sweet Shop." During our visit in 2022, the south-facing exterior and our takeout box of sweets had the Meat Market & Sweet Shop logo, which features an old meat scale. I noticed this was in contrast to the "Rose's Noodles, Dumpings & Sweets" logo on the outside signage and menus, which features a bowl of noodles. According to the restaurant's website, "in summer 2017, Rose's made a full transformation of their space from meat market to an East Asian-inspired eatery." Rose's has a small space with an open kitchen, dining room, and pastry shop all in a single room. Seating is limited. I counted six seats at the bar and maybe 25 or so seats lining the storefront windows. All bar-height. The interior was snug and cozy. It had a bit of an industrial feel to it. The atmosphere was casual and hip. Since seating is limited and this place is popular, you should make a reservation through Rose's website at https://rosesdurham.com/. Our party of four had a Friday 6:30pm reservation. The dining room was at or near capacity for the duration of our visit with a few open seats at the bar. I liked the restaurant's simple menu. When we visited, the menu had six appetizers ($3.30-13.00 each), salads ($10 each or 2 for $15), sandwiches ($12.00-15.50 each), and bowls ($13-17 each, except for the Crispy Soft Shell Crab at $38). The drink menu had interesting selections, not just run-of-the-mill offerings, including beer, wine, coffee, and tea. The bottle of rose we got, listed below, wasn't on the menu. I forget the price, but bottles on the menu were priced at $37-49 each. Here's what we got: - Appetizers - * Beef & Pickled Chili Dumplings ($12) - garlic chive sauce * Pickle Plate ($9) - 3-4 seasonal veggies in different preparations - Sandwiches - * Katsu Sando (x2, $15.50 each) - milkbread, cabbage, tonkatsu sauce - Bowls - * Soy Tonkotsu Ramen (x2, $17 each ) - pork belly, marinated egg, black mushrooms, nori * Housemade Belt Noodles (x2, $16 each) - spicy pork belly sauce, broccoli, sweet onion, chili oil, cilantro - Ice Cream Sandwiches ($5.75 each) - * Carrot Cake Cheesecake * Strawberry & Strawberry Sorbet * Brown Sugar Cookie Dough - Other Sweets - * Meyer Lemon Poppyseed Macarons ($2.25 each) * Burnt Honey Honeycomb Macarons ($2.25 each) * Pistachio Candied Orange Sugar Cookies ($4.00) - Drinks - * Sprecher Cherry Cola ($2) * Getariako Txakolina Ameztoi Rubentis (rose) I didn't mention the Beef & Pickled Chili Dumplings in my first sentence above, but they were yummy as well. I recommend them. Five plump dumplings were served to an order and they were rich and flavorful. The crushed nuts on top added an extra crunch. I love pickled food and was looking forward to trying Rose's Pickle Plate. It wasn't bad, but the veggies could've used more pickling, in my opinion. The veggies included cauliflower, cabbage, and squash. I was also looking forward to trying the Katsu Sando, but it wasn't all that I was hoping for. The unique sweet flavor of the milkbread threw me off. And I would've preferred a bigger pork cutlet and perhaps less cabbage. This one wasn't a homerun. What were homeruns, though, were the aforementioned Ramen, Belt Noodles, Ice Cream Sandwiches, and Macarons. Everything about the ramen was terrific including its appetizing noodles (fantastic consistency), perfectly soft-boiled egg, thick, succulent slices of pork belly, and rich, complex broth. Simply put, Rose's ramen is legit. The Belt Noodles were packed with flavor. The wide noodles had phenomenal texture and the pork belly meat was mouthwateringly good. The Ice Cream Sandwiches are a must. My favorite was the Brown Sugar Cookie Dough, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the flavors. Rose's makes their own ice cream. The Macarons were expertly-executed as well. Very sweet, top quality, and ideal texture. The Pistachio Candied Orange Sugar Cookies were quite delectable too. Fresh, sugary, and aromatic. There was a 4.0% "Happy Workplace" surcharge that I was happy to pay in order to help provide the employees with health insurance (and maybe other benefits). Our server and everyone else we interacted with from the restaurant were great. Excellent service.

Yelp
When in Durham, I always swing by Rose's for dessert. They make a good, quality dessert. I love the Creme Brûlée cake and the Salted Caramel Bread Pudding. They are the perfect balance of sweet. With the honey pieces on top, the cake is two sweets in one. However, in going to Rose's (which some would describe as cozy, which is honestly a nice way to put "hot as hell and cramped inside"), I know there will always be a trade off, and that trade off consists of basic manners. I know I'm going to get something tasty, but I also know it's going to be served to me (after being ignored for a bit) by someone who looks like they'd rather be getting work done at the office of Orin Scrivello, DDS than interact with me. So, I get a treat, and they get a decent tip and the hope that I never, never come back.

Yelp
My friend and I came on a weekday for a quick lunch. The parking was very limited and I kept checking to see if my car got towed - not sure if I parked in the right place. I ordered the soy tonkatsu ramen and a Mochi chocolate roll for dessert. The ramen broth was very flavorful, and the pork belly was delicious! I devoured the whole thing! The Mochi cake is supposedly not always available so I'm happy I got to try it - I love Mochi flour desserts so this cake didn't disappoint. However, I was a little confused when I saw a 4% happy workplace tax on the receipt. I would've appreciated a bit of an explanation or a heads up to expect this. Overall, we had a great experience and I'll be back for more chocolate desserts!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
The food was just ok. We got tea leaf salad, noodles, and cake. The tea leaf salad was very strong-tasting. My noodles were too spicy but I guess that was my fault for ordering a spicy dish. My friend got some gluten free noodles (she has celiac) and felt sick afterwards. I got some chocolate cake which was pretty good. In general, I didn't really enjoy the food and was let down by all the hype.

Yelp
I wanted to check this place out for a while now and finally made my way here for a late lunch yesterday. Firstly this place has weird operating hours which makes it difficult to plan to eat here. Secondly the inside is a small vibe former butcher shop which was cool. The dessert case looked appetizing but I'm not a sweets person. Now the food... I tried the ramen because that's the popular dish. The broth was piping hot which I can appreciate. However the flavors was a miss. Honestly it just tasted like chicken broth with a soy base of some sort. The noodles weren't tradition ramen noodles and they overviewed the bowl with them. The 6 min egg was hard boiled and and left my taste buds with much to be desired. My self and the person I went with both ordered the ramen and neither one of us finished our food and opted not to take it with us. Needless to say I was disappointed with this experience. On a lighter note they have a pretty decent ginger beer but won't be back.

Ciera R.

Yelp
A very cute place. You can tell everything is handmade. I was watching them make it the menu changes as items may run out. I came in wanting the belt noodles with the broth and that chicken but that was unavailable so I had it with the pork and it was decent. For it to be a Szechuan sauce I definitely expected a lot more spice, but I am someone who heavily loves spice, so I just may be that this is spicy for someone else. The spring rolls were very lackluster. It was quite honestly just the cold noodles and the smallest bite of chicken that is overpowered by the noodles and there wasn't really any other vegetables inside of the spring roll, so I did expect a little bit more for traditional Asian spring roll. The Italian soda I had was great was not aware it had so much sugar. I'm someone who doesn't drink a lot of sugary things, at least added sugar, so I guess it was kind of unsuspecting treat, but I enjoyed it, the service was decent as well. It seemed lots of people were coming in for their sweets, but I was too full to even get anything to go. Couldn't even finish my noodle bowl. Overall, I would say services is great. The atmosphere was definitely clean I would definitely come back again and hopefully to try the belt noodles with the actual broth, but from experience I don't see anything that would stop me from coming again decent experience overall.

Yelp
Very crowed on Saturday night. Indoor sitting area is small and smokey due to being next too the opened kitchen. But it's a lively vibe. This is American take on Asian cuisine from ramen (Japan), to dumpling and buns (China). I think they taste very good. I wish the belt noodles was spicier and accompanied with some pickles to tame down the creaminess. I liked the ramen and dumplings. Everything is a bit saltier for us, but washing it down with beer is not bad at all. And lastly, their dessert is must-ordered.

Yelp
Ordered a few things from this place and I had to try one of each of their macaroons and I have to tell you you will fall in love just with the creme brulee macaroon by itself..... the service was wonderful. They are so patient as you all questions and though they didn't know it was my first time there, they treated me as if I had never been there and explained their menu. I was even impressed to hear what they are known for. With so many businesses known for poor customer service i had to make time to say thank you for the experience. I'll be calling to see on ordering this creme brule macrons shipped to Georgia!!!!

Dodge P.

Yelp
Ice cream Sammy was bomb but the Asian food very MEH. SALTY and bland - but I did enjoy the atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
I would say Rose's is a great place for a date night or a quick "grab a pastry and go" place. The food it a little on the salty side and there is not a lot of seating so I would try to get there before the rush comes! I went with my husband and we were able to find a table quickly because we went at 530pm. Loved! the ambiance. I would go back for that! Like to sit there and have a good conversation, the service was great. The pork/squash dumpings were fine, but next time I'd like to try the other appetizers on their menu. The special beef noodle soup was a bit on the saltier side, but the sliced meat was cooked to perfection! Definitely give Rose a shot, and parking isn't bad! (If you go early).

Yelp
Just had the Hot and Sour sweet potato noodles, very good. Noodles were clear. Also had what was probably the best dessert I've had in a while, the passion fruit macaroon and passion fruit cake. OUTSTANDING.....

Yelp
That sounds like I was kicked out of Rose's doesn't it? This was my first trip back to Roses' since the start of the pandemic and outside of their expanded outdoor seating that comes and goes depending on the weather and their new indoor seating reservation setup online. Outside of those new things it was like returning to Roses' when I last went in January of 2020. Much like my last time at Roses it was a cold, rainy weekend and perfect conditions for enjoying a large, hearty bowl of ramen and a steamed pork bun.  The spicy pork ramen was actually just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting , but not cause problems the next morning. The pork buns are fantastic. They're a fairly good size and pair nicely with a bowl of ramen. My father-in-law got the belt noodles and loved them and loved the experience of Roses. We went right when Roses's opened on Sunday since the older folks love to eat early and it wasn't packed at open but by the time we left it was fully bustling as usual. It's great to see some of the same faces I remember seeing at Roses the last time I was there pre-pandemic right before everything changed. It was like returning to a simpler time. Roses are awesome. Their ramen is probably the best in down. While they lack the options of somewhere like Dashi it's all about the quality not quantity at Roses. Certainly one of Durham's best restaurants that I'm very happy still retains its quaint feel.

Yelp
World class noodles, friendly service and indoor/outdoor options. We were first time visitors to Durham and absolutely delighted to find this gem of a restaurant! It's still on the mind weeks later so I had to do a review. Some Favs: Summer tomato & corn salad. Imagine the best tomatoes you've EVER had in your life paired with super crispy crunchy corn and a perfectly light sauce. Bright, fresh, we fought over the last tomato. The salad menu changes with the seasons but I suspect the other months are just as creative and delicious. Belt noodle bowl: We got the vegetable version and this dish was perfect. I don't call dishes perfect very often but their noodle bowls deserve it. I order Xian/belt style noodles a lot, their version with veggies is a very welcome iteration. The noodle texture/sauce was super crave-able and could go toe-to-toe with some of my normal haunts back home. We were too stuffed to really do justice to the deserts but we split an ice cream sandwich and it was delicious. Really loved all the creative flavors. I saw they had just brought out what looked like fresh macarons as we were leaving... next visit I will be back for those.

Yelp
I had been keen to try this place for awhile and I was not disappointed!! I got the vegetarian bun, a salad and the spicy veg noodles. I went on a cold Saturday afternoon and it was exactly what I needed. Some of the best food in Durham

Yelp
WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS PLACE. RAMEN + ELEVATED DESSERTS. TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS. I always get the tonkotsu - the belt noodles are also a favorite among my friends. I always come here for 1:1 catch-ups with friends and have also come for the occasional birthday dinner. This beautiful restaurant offers a fantastic atmosphere, creative and delicious cuisine, and friendly and attentive service. The menu is definitely a little creative and eclectic, with a range of small plates and entrees that showcase a variety of flavors. Fun to go with friends and order a bunch of dishes so everyone can have a taste of each item.

Yelp
Rose's is absolutely one of the best parts of living in Durham. The menu is so well curated and everything is fresh and delicious, and the pairing of savory with the bakery makes it my happy place - since I know there will always be something delicious for dessert. My faves are the gingersnap cookies, any type of pudding cake, the macarons and the gourmet ice cream sandwiches. Owners are so hardworking and earnest and I just want this place to stay here forever.

Yelp
definitely a neat little hidden gem! i love the concept of savory and sweet together! there isn't really too much parking available but a lot of street parking close by. once you walk in, you're blasted with so much amazing smells and there's limited indoor seating but there is outdoor seating with umbrella tops to shade. i was greeted and brought to a two person table that was somewhat tight to squeeze into if there adjacent tables are occupied! we ordered some pork dumplings for appetizer, which was so flavorful and the chili oil wasn't too spicy either. our ramen and belt noodles came about 7-10 minutes afterwards and it was sooo delicious! the presentation and aroma from both dishes almost made me forget to take pictures first!! there were mushrooms, lettuce, egg, and pork along with my ramen, which was cooked perfectly and super slirpable! i tried a bite of the belt noodle dish and there were so many spices involved but not too overwhelming! we spent over three hours chatting before deciding on some macarons to finish up our late lunch! the pistachio was delicious, the texture was perfect and flavors were perfectly balanced. i would definitely recommend that if you're deciding on a macaron flavor! overall, super amazing experience and can't wait to come again for different flavors!

Yelp
Second time here. Locally owned restaurant in a cute area of Durham. There is a small parking lot for the restaurant. I'm a big fan of ramen and we got the miso ramen here. The noodles were great with a nice chewy texture but the broth was salty, not rich (not sure if this was supposed to be bone broth based?). Didn't try other things on the menu, but there are better ramen options here in the triangle. If your goal is to find a good ramen, try IZA whisky and eats, m pocha (interesting spicy seafood ramen), or dashi instead.

Yelp
This is a cute and unique spot. I love the vibe. They were busy but there was enough seating outside. The food was delicious.

Yelp
This was our first time coming here and we are very glad we made a reservation beforehand as it was very busy on a Saturday night and the restaurant is small inside. We were seated immediately. We ordered the soy tonkatsu ramen & Belt noodles that had chicken and asparagus. It took about 30 minutes for our food to come out which was a little surprising considering they had no more than 20 items total on their menu and thought the noodle soups would be brought out pretty fast. The ramen was $22 and probably the most expensive bowl of ramen we've had in the Raleigh/durham area and sadly we have had better ramen elsewhere for a way cheaper price. However, we were pretty impressed with the belt noodles. They were thick and the broth was spicy and flavorful. Although not sure if it was worth $19. We also got some desserts, including a creme brulee macaron, strawberry & cream handprint and an upside down cake. They were all delicious and a great way to end the dinner.

Yelp
I went on a Friday with a friend and we sat at the bar, watching the amazing staff preparing meals which were beyond compare! So delicious! I returned on Sunday with my husband to share this wonderful food and if I lived closer I would be there every week!

Yelp
Great little spot to grab a bite to eat. We ordered inside and sat outside where they brought out our food. Pretty no frills experience - we got our own napkins, utensils and water, and they gave us paper plates to share. Overall we really enjoyed everything we ordered - the salads and belt noodles were highlights. I would say the noodles and fish were on the spicy side for sure. The ice cream and mochi cake were a nice cool down after the meal.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere, delicious food. We had the lunch special for $11: veggie bun + salad. The white miso gingersnap ice cream sandwich was amongst the best ice cream-related desserts I've had. Will be returning!!

Yelp
Heard wonderful things about this place, but didn't want to have high expectation because of the mixed yelp reviews I read. But it's very very good!!!! Strongly recommend the dessert!! Miso chocolate cake won me over despite me being a yellow cake fan. And the citrus upside down cake, so tasty and "light"; the blood orange is so delicate that I felt I could eat ten of it without feeling bad. I got so excited and bought a box of dessert to bring to friends before I left. Ironically, after trying all kinds, my favorite two were still the two I initially ordered at the restaurant. Macaroons were disappointing. The others were good, but not outstanding. I enjoy the food a lot, but dessert was fantastic!! I will absolutely come back for more dessert!!!! Dessert is a little pricy but totally worth it (if you make the right pick).

Yelp
I think Rose's is pretty good. As a vegetarian, the options are limited but they are tasty. Food runs on the spicy side, which I personally prefer, but it is something to keep in mind, especially if you are eating with others who can't handle it -- and don't ask for modifications, because they won't even try to accommodate. Food does also does typically run a bit salty. Belt noodles are very good. Cute atmosphere for a nice casual meal or date. Nice to also grab a dessert, they always have a lot of options. Food is pricey and the 4% happy employees add-on makes tipping confusing (I add a 15% tip to total 19%, not sure if that's what I should do).

Yelp
Ramen was okay. Dumplings were unreal. I think there are better spots in Durham for this type of food but the restaurant was cute, the staff was polite and the meal was good enough.

Yelp
Came here for the desserts and loved them! We tried: Fig and honeycomb in gingersnaps ice cream sandwich - Had to try their popular ice cream sandwiches and it was so good!! The gingersnaps were crunchy but also soft and not too sweet and the ice cream was so creamy!! 10/10 recommend this. Burnt honey honey comb and creme brûlée macarons - Soo cute! The creme brûlée one was well torched. Miso Caramel Bread pudding - Sounds weird but actually flavors worked well together! My friend thought it was a yummy combo of bitter and sweet! Dense and not overly sweet. Vanilla toffee 8 oz cup - So creamy! One of the best ice creams my friend has ever tasted o: Overall very impressed by the sweets/bakery section. Would love to try their other desserts as well as the savory items! Love how the flavors and ingredients differ depending on season so it never gets boring! Cons were that the seating was a bit small and AC didn't work well. Street parking was kind of hard to find :(

Yelp
Steam bun - for $4.5, I did expect a little more.. flavor was okay, filling doesn't fill the bun completely. Hand pulled belt noodles - great flavor but too much starch/dough Soy tonkatsu ramen - probably the best entree offered here. Flavor resembles a bit more of warm soba than a true tonkatsu ramen because it's a bit heavier on the soy sauce, but overall a nice dish on a rainy cold day with the perfectly cooked noodles, jammy egg and chashu. I really enjoyed the cabbage in this. Ice cream sandwiches - candied kumquat and white miso gingersnap were both fantastic. I have tried a variety of sweets from here and not everything is great - I would recommend chocolate cake and ice cream sandwiches over other options. Vaccination proof is required for dine-in!

Yelp
OMG! OMG! OMG! What a concept of a place! Ot is everything I love in one place! I didn't know the sign said Rose's because the words noodles, dumplings and sweets is all I saw when we first drove by. Anyway they are so gooooodddd and I am from NYC so I know good food but this place blew me away! Everything is awesome and the sweet? I am not even a sweets person and I love the blueberry peach upside down cake!

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday night 5 minutes before the kitchen closed. The staff was nice enough to let us order before they closed at 8 pm. You order at the counter and the menu is completely online. There wasn't a QR code or anything to scan. My friends got the Ramen and I got the Pork Belly Hand Belt Noodles. My friends and I originally sat outside but we got cold so we moved inside. There was also a homeless man who came up to us outside asking for money..... Overall I enjoyed my food and experience here. However, one of the male staff members who wore glasses and had a man bun kept giving me friends and I unfriendly glances/looks. I don't know if it was because my friends and I moved inside after being outside but another group did the same thing....

Yelp
Let's get the not so great out of the way - the service could be better. Our waitress seemed really annoyed, did not check on us, and seemed like she wanted us to leave. But with that being said though... the food was delicious. Hard to pinpoint my favorite dish but everything was very fresh and tasty in its own way. Like I have expectations for steamed buns, Tonkontsu ramens, pork dumplings and Rose's really met those expectations and then some. Like it was all really well seasoned but felt distinct. Absolutely get an ice cream sandwich before you go, perfect way to end the meal. The ice cream was light and the ginger snap cookie was just the right amount of sweetness.

Yelp
I'm really torn here.* The ramen and noodles are good. The desserts are amazing. Steamed buns, delish. The "salads" (more like raw sides, which isn't bad) are way over-priced for the size. And the menu is small and not very veg friendly. *But, for real, what the snap is a "happy workplace" 4% charge?! Is it gratuity? Does it go to the owner? I have to imagine that it's hurting tips .... Just pay your employees well and stop with all of these extra fees and posturing.

Yelp
Small hole in the wall noodle and dumpling shop with big flavors. Ordered at the register and asked the cute server for a recommendation. Super helpful. Recommendation the soup. It was super tasty. Best Ramen I've had outside of Japan. Cheers.

Yelp
This was definitely the last time we went to Rose's! We have said this before because people are sometimes unfriendly, the take out food is often cold and when you complain- people are unhelpful, but ..we like their food and we were there from the beginning of this restaurant when it was still Rose's Meat and Sweets. We bought sweets for occasions and ourselves and meat from a real butcher! After the change to the Dumplings & Sweets we ordered many take outs during the pandemic trying to support a local business. However, this time we arrived to a nearly empty restaurant, had to wait around and ask whether we could seat ourselves. Then, when seated, got water, menu and nothing else for 10-15 mins. In that time everybody else but one person waiting for take out had left and the waitress was clearing tables right and left of us of a few water glasses. it looked like a calm phase to us but maybe she was really busy with something we weren't aware of. A quick "I'll be right with you" would have clarified that. It truly felt almost hostile the way people were not looking at us at all. We gave it another 2 mins- yep, set the timer on the phone and then left. I am sad to let this one go, but that's exactly what we will do.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this find! We ordered the steamed bun, tonkostsu ramen, and belt noodles. Everything had great flavor (although each dish was a little on the pricier side). I especially liked the charcoal, smokier flavor of the ramen and the texture of the bun and belt noodles - would recommend!

Yelp
There were only a few parking spots. The desserts all looked AMAZING! I got the peanut butter cup ice cream sandwich. The cookie used was interesting but tasted good. I would definitely love to come back to try more of their dessert selections.
