Trinidadian roti specialist serving hot doubles, buss up shot

"From channa-packed baras to newborn-sized rotis, to wedges of macaroni pie with sweet tamarind sauce on top, the range of enormously delicious and incredible-value Trinidadian options from Roti Joupa isn’t quite limitless—but it will keep you going for some time. You’ll find the Trinidadian takeaway in Shepherd’s Bush, Stratford, and Holloway." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley
"The north London outpost of our favourite Trinidadian takeaway is part of a handful of concessions above Nag’s Head Market in Holloway. This strangely makeshift-feeling space has neither the hustle and bustle of the market downstairs (which is home to Proper Tacos) nor the cookie-cutter familiarity of a big money food hall. It’s like a sixth form centre where you can get a pint, handmade pasta or, in this case, reliable roti. Swing by when hot doubles or buss up shot are on your mind. Roti Joupa’s channa and curry chicken are warming, familiar, and not entirely fitting with the environment. But if anything should make people come to this odd space, it’s this place. Food Rundown Hot Doubles The must-order thing and the best use of a few quid in your pocket. The baras are satisfyingly chewy, the channa is a cumin-rich, gently spiced sensation, topped with hot sauce, and some welcome cucumber and onion shreds on top. Order one for now, and take one away for later. Buss Up Shot Although you can get this paratha with curried meat or fish, we like it best with a mix of vegetables. The curry aloo is smooth and spiced, the pumpkin excellently sweet, and garlic bodi and spinach feature because eating your greens is important. Curry Goat Roti This enormous filled roti is a very good-value meal. It’s easily big enough to share too. The goat is moist but a little too politely spiced, so make sure to ask for it with an extra kick. Macaroni Pie Another beige delight, this macaroni pie is brick-like. It’s the cheesy pasta building block that society needs. Make sure you get it with some sweet tamarind sauce on top too." - Jake Missing
"London’s famous Trinidadian roti specialist has closed its Clapham original, but continues doing what it does best in Finsbury Park. That would be doubles: sandwiched fried barra filled with spiced chickpeas plus hot, sweet, and sour condiments are never not a good snack. For something more substantial, grab a dalpuri roti, filled with curried goat or chicken; or that same, moreish chickpea curry which fortifies the doubles." - James Hansen

"Your order: Hot doubles (£2.50) The sibling to one of our favourite spots in Clapham, the north London branch of this Trinidadian takeaway is a two-second walk up Stroud Green Road and a consistently good way to break a fiver. Hot doubles - chewy baras filled with a warming channa that’s equal parts cumin and comfort, topped with dashes of both hot and a fruity tamarind sauce - is the go-to." - jake missing
"One of the few Trini places in London that has permeated the general food-interested consciousness, Roti Joupa specialises in the Indian-influenced cuisine of Trinidad and Tobago. Pliant rotis are folded over each other as vehicles for curried meats and vegetables, but the ideal way to experience Roti Joupa is through an Avengers assemblage of snacks: hot doubles with chickpeas and hot sauce — ask for it — fluffy pholourie; buss-up pieces of roti, scragged edged and perfect for dunking in a curry; and, best of all, London’s best mac n cheese, tray bake style and floating in a paddling pool of tamarind." - Jonathan Nunn
