"Ruth’s Diner is not your grandma’s breakfast spot. OK, maybe it actually is, since it’s been open since 1930, but the vibe is decidedly non-octogenarian. Built inside a renovated trolley car and located 20 minutes outside the city in Emigration Canyon, the small indoor space means long waits, but they also have a spacious outdoor patio. Every meal starts just how Ruth (the original owner who has since passed away) used to make it: with a biscuit served with housemade fruit preserves. Pair those with pulled pork benedicts, corned beef hash, three-egg omelets, or banana walnut french toast. photo credit: Alice Nelson" - Jenny Willden

Great cute place, I love the history and fact that it's a restored trolley car. I only went here once, but the staff and atmosphere were great. I ordered the quiche of the day and that was my only issue. It had the veggies I wanted, but the eggs were a bit soggy and the crust tasty but not as flaky as I'd expect. The flexibility of the quiche as I cut it hinted that it wasn't baked completely, and was reheated later. If it was just reheated in a toaster oven, the crust would be flaky again and the eggs complete. This just wasn't it for me.

Always an enjoyable experience, Ruth's Diner is one of the best restaurants just outside of the city. Whenever we have guest from out of town, we make time to have lunch or dinner here. Our last visit was pleasant and we were actually there to experience the live band which complemented the patio scenery. They do not accept reservations so plan accordingly, we have never had to wait longer than 15 minutes.

We went for an early family dinner on Friday to Ruth’s. We ordered the kids’ quesadilla, chile verde burrito, chicken piccata, and grilled artichoke appetizer. Food was very good - not mind-blowing, but definitely yummy. I think the artichoke appetizer was our favorite. We sat outside on the patio and there were 2 women playing guitar and singing. Atmosphere was great! Music was not too loud. We did have to bring our own crayons and paper for the kids, but otherwise family friendly atmosphere. Service was cheery and stopped by often. We did feel a little rushed to leave once we had our food. I think within 15 minutes of getting our dishes we had the check and she brought to-go boxes.

Google
It is a charming spot in Salt Lake with great service and a lovely patio. The hot chocolate was rich and comforting, and the bread with jam was absolutely delicious. The bacon was cooked to perfection. We were however not that happy with the pancakes. Still a perfect place for a relaxed breakfast!

Google
My cinnamon roll french toast was burnt on the bottom but could had pulled 2 sec sooner... need more heaters if ur gonna seat folks on the patio... understand it was very busy.. but the server could had been a tad more attentive... ie hot drinks got empty and took over 20 mins to refill. It was chilly on a Saturday afternoon... overall service was ok.. food ok... and plentiful... will make another trip when not busy..

Google
I LOVE THIS PLACE! With that said it has the best biscuits I ever had they are so fresh .. and I love the strawberry jam.. Service is always good .. I love that they have a patio (we all agree on that) their eggs Benedict are so good so far I have fried the pull pork and the CFS one.. both delicious.,

Google
Dine in the canyon of middle class while watching weekend warriors on bikes in competitive gears riding by. 👌 Food is good. Service was prompt. When the weather is nice, ask to sit outside in their courtyard!!

Yelp
I saw this place along the road during a drive in the hills and decided to bring my gf there on the weekend. It's a really special spot, you can tell it has a lot of history and so much love has kept it alive all these years. There's a real home-style family vibe, lots of heart. It was also packed when I went so expect a wait if you go on the weekend. Food was lovely and as far as I remember they had these famous homemade biscuit things that were amazing.

Yelp
Ruth's Diner in Emigration Canyon is one of my favorites - especially in the summer when you can enjoy their beautiful patio. The Cobb Salad is delicious and the sandwiches were tasty. Skip the chips and salsa. The deep fried mac and cheese was tasty! Service was great!

Yelp
We stopped by for breakfast at Ruth's Diner and had a hearty meal with friendly service. They gave us some complimentary biscuits which were really buttery, soft, and delicious. I devoured them in minutes! We got the Cinnamon Roll French Toast and the Sunrise Spuds. The cinnamon roll french toast was just as it sounds - it was a cinnamon roll in french toast form, served with little dollops of orange cream cheese. The sunrise spuds were hashbrowns with mushrooms, cheese, pico de gallo, and guacamole. Everything was tasty, served in large portions, and well-priced.

Yelp
Umm just come for The biscuits! So good, I wish it they were warm! We came around 12 seemed busy but we were seated right away inside. We wanted to sit outside but I think maybe for the winter they only have few tables. And didn't feel like waiting. We were hungry. I ordered Ruth's breakfast combo with French toast. Not a fan of peppered bacon but it was good. Everything was good in my opinion. Nothing was like omg this is the best over easy eggs and bacon I've had, but I enjoyed my breakfast. 1 complaint was the hashbrowns. They tasted good but wish they were crispy :( not crispy at all. Go with a different side IMO. Coffee was good. I liked the pac cakes better then they French toast. French toast was good but pancakes had more flavor. Our server was very attentive and friendly. He sounded like crunk for emperors new groove and it honestly made my day but I couldn't bring myself to tell him!

Malathy A.

Yelp
There was a 40 minute wait to get in! And everyone I interacted with said it was totally worth it and yes, they were right. There are chairs to wait outside and you get to soak in the beautiful views while you wait. As soon as I got in, there were biscuits with butter waiting for us at the table. And it's the most delicious and fluffiest biscuit, you'll ever eat! Oh my! I asked for specials, and got the quiche of the day with creamy mushrooms. The crust was a little dry but still delicious. Chicken steak with eggs was to die for! Just so full of creaminess on the crunchy perfectly fried chicken steak. It is a popular spot so I would recommend getting there early.

Yelp
This is a beautiful location and such cool history. This is definitely just diner food but I love the patio and overall ambiance. Pull pork tacos were okay, I wish they had a little more flavor.

Brittney B.

Yelp
This was my first time here and it didn't disappoint! My husband, sisters and I went here for lunch and none of us had been here before. They seated us quicker than expected and while we waited we walked around the parking lot and hung out by the river. While waiting they have a water and coffee station for you as well, which I thought was really cool! Our food did take a little longer than expected coming out but it wasn't a crazy long time. My cheeseburger I wouldn't probably ever get it again. It was nothing special, although it was big but no flavor. My sister loved her salmon BLT, my other sister loved her Reuben sandwich and my husband liked his turkey avocado as well. All sandwiches were a good size portion. We got fried pickles but it only came with like 4 spears of fried pickles, so not as many as I thought. We ate inside next to the train car. It was a little crowded but nothing too crazy. I like the old antique look and it had photos of Ruth herself which was cool to see!

Yelp
Ruth's Diner is located in the beautiful Emigration Canyon with a choice of seating inside or outside. The ambiance is super casual, and there are tables and booths for any party size. The Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs was the tastiest I've ever had. The badder was crunchy and perfectly seasoned, and the gravy was delicious. I usually do not like hash browns, but I gobbled these hash browns down! I don't know how they season them, but I will crave them from now on. My boyfriend got the corned beef and hash, and he absolutely loved it. There was enough corned beef that was perfectly flavored, mixing well with the peppers and onions. It was mixed with the eggs and break, creating the perfect portion to feel full. He also got the chorizo sausage maintained its warmth from the stove throughout the meal, and the spice and flavor were mixed so well that there was a hint of spice without being overwhelming. The service was spectacular! Trevor kept our coffees full and always asked if we needed anything else. He had a welcoming and competent attitude, and maintained superior service throughout the meal.

Yelp
Ruth's is always a great time. You can't beat the view from the drive up, then you get there and it's just the cutest place. It's popular, so depending on when you go you may have to wait. But don't let the crowd or the wait time scare you away! There's plenty of parking, and they will occasionally offer you drinks while you wait. Plus you can always take a little drive and look at the beautiful scenery if you don't want to hang out. The service is always top notch, they're all so friendly and helpful. When the weather is nice they have their outdoor patio open, and sometimes live music on the back deck which is always so fun. Then of course, aside from the atmosphere and ambiance, the food is also amazing! Wether you're going for breakfast or lunch, sweet or savory, it's going to be good. The Ruth's Bloody Mary is one of the best I've ever had! And the biscuits will give my own Southern Grandma's a run for their money. And don't skip the homemade jam!

Thommy C.

Yelp
We have been to Ruth's Diner a few times in past and had good experiences. We recently stopped by for Sunday brunch. The weather was perfect, so we had the opportunity to sit on the patio. We had about a 15 minute wait. It was busy, but the space between tables makes it feel open. Our food server was nice and quickly took our food order and drinks. The fresh squeezed Orange juice was great. Food came out quickly and as orders. We ordered the Corned Beef Hash and Chicken Fried Steak. Both meals were large portions and served hot. As a bonus to this fun brunch experience, there was live music. Performed at just the right volume; as to not distract from conversations, but add to the background sound. It was another successful visit. Definitely look forward to our return.

Amanda Q.

Yelp
Our server was great and the place was super cute. Outdoor seating was perfect. Food was okay. The biscuits they served were really good but everything else was just meh. I probably wont come here again.

Corynn B.

Yelp
This place is a local favorite! A classic spot to go to in the Salt Lake City area. It's located up Emigration Canyon and it a beautiful little drive. Definitely get there early, especially on the weekends. This place fills up quite quickly and a 45 minute+ wait is fairly common. They don't take reservations ahead of time. The interior is super cozy, but I would highly recommend their patio seating during the warmer months! The views are beautiful and sometimes they have live music on the patio. The biscuits here are what they're known for. When you're seated, you're given one huge biscuit for each person at your table. They come warm and fresh with butter and jam on the side. They're delicious! The rest of the food here has always fallen a little flat for me. The service is wonderful, the space itself gives cute/cozy diner vibes. The main courses on their menu have never stood out to me. I've gotten their huevos rancheros and their burrito - both are decent, but never anything I crave or want to go back for. I mostly go here for the biscuits and the views. The last time I was here they had some fall themed cocktails that sounded lovely. I got a mimosa which was on the pricier side for a mimosa. Overall, a must try location if you've never been, especially if you're craving cozy comfort food during any season.

Yelp
Housed in an old railcar up in the mountains since 1930 Ruth's Diner was popular long before being mentioned on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, increased notoriety after its owners' passing now seeing guests often wait more than an hour to enjoy hearty America classics beginning at 8am Thursday through Monday. A scenic twenty minute drive outside of Salt Lake City, the interior tightly packed such that servers must carefully navigate aisles single-file, it was with the outdoor patio closed due to rain that guests waited patiently for a chance to enjoy complimentary "Mile High Biscuits" made by Ines Monreal complete with housemade Preserves. Featuring pictures of Ruth and her staff throughout, the one-time cabaret singer first opening a Hamburger shop downtown before migrating to the mountains, the Diner's current crew trends quite young but very pleasant whether serving Sandwiches, Bennys or Desserts such as the excessively-sweet Banana Walnut Bread Pudding. Built to turn a table, both this diner and a family of four across the way out the door less than 45 minutes after seating, Ruth's Cinnamon Roll French Toast fares well despite a lack of real Maple Syrup, but in the end its mostly those flaky, buttery Biscuits and nostalgia that makes Ruth's worth a visit.

Joe M.

Yelp
Absolutely the best biscuits I've ever had! They practically melt in your mouth! The service was excellent! The food is always really good! And the wait can be very long especially on the weekends. A fun place for breakfast and brunch!

Bradford N.

Yelp
First time here and it was a real great experience all around. Good service by Charlie and the special was delicious. Ambience inside and out is wonderful. We will return again when we're in town.

Jay M.

Yelp
This diner gets a lot of traffic for being in the middle of the canyon! It's a tight squeeze walking through the restaurant, that's because it's an authentic old fashioned diner. I always get an antique feeling when I'm here. It's lovely. The service is always top notch. The menu offers a large variety! From your basic biscuits and gravy to Mexican chilaquiles, they have it all! I was shocked, I would've never guessed walking into this old fashioned American diner that there would be Mexican dishes. It happens to be my favorite style breakfast. I went on a Saturday for brunch, the wait was 45 mins, and we exchanged gifts for a baby shower. It was awesome! We all ordered something different, every plate looked fantastic. I ordered migas and they did NOT disappoint. It's a simple traditional Mexican dish, this one came w beans, red rice, scoop of guac, and a flour tortilla. It was sooo good! Cost about $14. The last time I came out was during lunch on a weekday and it wasn't as busy. Honestly, you can't live in SLC and not have the experience of coming to this place. It's a MUST.

Jack D.

Yelp
Always great and personable service. They actually remember their customers and their allergies. How about that for personalization! Food is predictably good. This is good, solid diner food. Order accordingly. Today's seating was immediate. Outside on a brisk day. Will take it over 45-60 minutes wait. It gets loud inside. Food arrived in 2-3 minutes and inhaled in less than that. A visit to Ruth's Diner is Not to be missed.

Paige T.

Yelp
This is a place to visit for the beautiful outdoor scenery and history, but the food is definitely subpar. It's so cool that you're eating in a trolley car in the canyon, surrounded by mountains, and the service is friendly. The "apple cider" tasted like it came from a packet, which was a bad sign of things to come. The salmon BLT had tasty bread and bacon, but the salmon tasted like it had not been seasoned at all- very bland. The pasta salad was okay, but had way too many onion pieces. My husband thought the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes were average, but the vegetables were strange. Why would jalapeños appear in a mix of broccoli and zucchini? A mystery. It appears that this might be a better place for breakfast/brunch, so I won't permanently write it off. But I left this meal desperately wanting something with good flavors.

Deej Jo A.

Yelp
The ambiance was so Salt Lake! LOL. This diner sits below the mountain, the view going in there is already wonder! Food service was great, food tasted good! Must-try when you're in SLC.

Pamela B.

Yelp
Cute lovely location. I haven't been before so I was excited to do brunch. I ordered the fish and eggs w/hash browns. The red trout was a decent but never really tasted the Cajun seasoning. Not sure if it was even there. It still tasted fine but I would be curious to know if the seasoning was there or not. I regret sitting inside. It was hard to hear and with one bad ear it made it extra difficult to understand anyone speaking. My friend struggled with the movement of the floor every time someone walked by our table. It made her a bit uneasy (maybe the slight hangover didn't help ) but still it would have been much better if we ate outside.

Michael P.

Yelp
Awesome food & history. My peppered pork chop was good. I wish I could have gone back for meatloaf! The chocolate pudding recipe from 1930's is outstanding. Low key diner but so worth the drive to get to it.

Jake B.

Yelp
You can't get much better than this diner food. I see why this place is so hyped up, definitely fantastic food. Perfectly cooked eggs, sausage patties, bacon, and pancakes. Casual, diner vibes. Perfect for an early breakfast!

Frances G.

Yelp
With summer here, it was wonderful dining outside! It was cool as there was a lot of great tree shade coverage. We went for breakfast, around 10 am and immediately got seated. I had pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and scrambled eggs. The hash browns were the best part, they had lots of flavor and seasoning. The pancakes were a bit hard and bland though. However, my food came out hot and fresh. This place has a wonderful history, so it was fun looking at the old decor and reading about this place on their menu. Overall the vibe was pretty relaxing. The waitress was quick and checked in on us twice. It was a cool place to try out and see some part of history.

Debra M.

Yelp
Go for the biscuits! We had fun, a great meal and fell in love with this gem. Kids had chicken strips and adults the mushroom burger. Service was awesome. But! Go for the biscuits!!

Walter N.

Yelp
Had a mid-morning breakfast on a Saturday. The drive there is scenic and the diner, particularly the back patio, is beautiful. Served up mile-high biscuits (see photos) immediately as we sat down with fresh raspberry jam. Soooo good! The service was kind and friendly. There was a hiccup with their order pri ter and our food came a little late. They apologized graciously and comped our drinks and extra side. We weren't in a hurry, but the gesture was appreciated. The Big breakfast was excellent, served with nice, thick, hearty, peppered bacon. We very much enjoyed our meal and will return again next time we're in the area.

Apoorva B.

Yelp
This place is located just adjacent to mountains and this provides the Diner with great ambience. The place is very lively and extremely crowded on weekends. It also has outdoor greenhouse cabins. Coming to food, we had deep fried mac and cheese, Ruth's breakfast combo and breakfast sandwich. Food was just above average. Mac and cheese- 2.5/5 Breakfast combo includes eggs, toast/pancake, hash browns and fresh fruit. Rather choose a pancake than toast- 2/5 Breakfast sandwich has good soft bread but hash browns could be better-3/5 Fresh orange juice and mimosas were good. The location of the place makes it worthwhile than the food itself.

Lily F.

Yelp
This place has huge potions, and is known for various eggs benedict. Though it was crowded, we did not have to wait. They offer you free biscuits which everyone eats with jam. They were okay- very filing. The food was okay, but average IMO. We ordered basic breakfast plates with pancakes, bacon, and hashbrowns.

Kathleen G.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere especially when it's hot in the city! Food is ok, but certainly not the best in the area. I recommend at least experiencing Ruth's once. A very iconic place. Make sure you read about Ruth on the photo of her in the entrance.

Sam R.

Yelp
We love Ruth's. I'm a sucker for a diner and this place is a little spot made good, that still knows where it came from. Whether you're eating out by the river, or inside the old train car, the atmosphere is great and the food is delicious. After breakfast, going up the road a couple more miles for some amazing views!

BchBum B.

Yelp
Just sat down. We decided to eat indoors on this beautiful Saturday evening. A study flow of customers going out back to eat. We enjoyed the quiet inside. The service is fairly quick and very nice. I had the Turkey and Avocado with the pasta salad. My hubby had the club with rings. They were very tasty. We then shared the Hot Fudge Brownie. Yumm. The only issue I had was how dirty the floors were under the table. There was a lot of food that was not swept out so my feet kept slipping. Other than that this was amazing place with very friendly staff and food. There was also Lots of beautiful flowers surround the property. We will be back next time we are in town.

Lenna A.

Yelp
Everything was fantastic. Busy morning but the ambiance and service was still top notch. Their biscuits are clearly legendary for a reason, and everything that we ordered tasted very homemade and authentic. The waitress was incredibly kind as well. Will definitely be coming back whenever I'm in the canyon.

Jacob M.

Yelp
This is how you do breakfast, this is how you do Hash Browns, this is how you do Egg's Benedict. There wasn't a single thing off about this the eggs were runny and the hollandaise was magnificent. The dinning room was cute and cozy, it wasn't busy so our server was able to get our food in and out to us so fast we didn't even notice how long. They also gave biscuits with jam and butter as a complimentary bonus to the entrees which was great and the biscuits were too! I absolutely adore Ruth's!

Sherry M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a good little diner, this is the place. I had pot roast, mashed potatoes and vegetables. It was juicy, tender and the seving was huge! Our waiter was very pleasant and friendly. I would definitely recommend it.

Terry G.

Yelp
Awesome burger and my partner enjoyed the soup of the day. You really can't go wrong with Ruth's. Also our server McKenna was amaze balls!

Peggy C.

Yelp
The food is always great. No matter the time of day, we always seem to get a seat right away.

Paulina M.

Yelp
The breakfast sandwich was yummy! I do wish the cheese was more melted and the bread were toasted. The ambiance outside was great. This place was packed. It's clearly an SLC favorite.

Debbie S.

Yelp
It's just the best. If you can plan it right, so you don't have to wait, it's golden. The atmosphere of being in the canyon eating delicious food, can't be beat. The service is always excellent and friendly. I prefer breakfast (because of the biscuits) over dinner, but the dinner rolls will also have you coming back. Just go. You won't regret it.

Robert W.

Yelp
Updated today, Oct-20-2023 due to the poor performance of carry out. I placed an order at 2:30pm, was told it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. I arrived about 2:45 paid and host said it was still being put together. I waited...patiently...finally asking host at 3. Host went to get (host actually forgot about me, even though sitting on bench inside) and came out with, "they just finished." BS! Fries were stone cold! I am late to a mtg, so no time to go back in to complain, but either host was stretching the truth or the kitchen was. Either way, Ruth's Diner was stretching the truth on "it's just now done". Very disappointing, what would Ruth say?!?!

A. C.

Yelp
(6/25/2023) we were on a little driving tour through Emigration Canyon and were recommended to visit this SLC classic. Ingredients were very fresh, and looked like a lot of care taken in keeping the homey vibe alive and well. One of my friend's was missing the green Chile sauce on Colorado-style burritos and opted for that Proustian memory, it did not disappoint. I had the Idaho red trout, a fresh fish, nice lemon cream, ordinary but well-executed sides. All vegetables peak freshness and cooked Al dente. There was live music, Amy Lamarr, I think, acoustic guitar and angst favorites from Jewel, Matchbox Twenty, Blondie. We sat outside during sunset, in the canyon surrounded by mountains, on a cool evening. Classic experience indeed!

Shanae C.

Yelp
We went in having a great morning. The food was great. The service was not. I understand being busy having a lot to tend to, but customer service is a big deal. It delegates the energy when being tended too. Our server mattie seemed extremely annoyed to even be serving us. We left unhappy and slightly frustrated.

Lu G.

Yelp
A classic restaurant, with excellent food, an extensive menu, exceptional service, and a lovely location. A truly enjoyable meal, for all the right reasons.

Vickie J.

Yelp
After a short wait, we were seated outside. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. I got the roasted artichoke with lemon aioli. It was to die for. It was so delicious, something I'll be craving until next time. The hubs got the club sandwich with fries. Crispy fries paired well with the sandwich. The bacon was thick cut and held up to the sandwich. The turkey was so moist. This sandwich was well built and was so delicious. Service was good. They didn't bug us but made sure to keep our water filled. Next time I'm getting a Bloody Mary, they looked yummy.

Tammy S.

Yelp
Great breakfast/brunch place. Always great quality food and friendly staff. It's busy always but worth the wait

Bret L.

Yelp
This good was just outstanding. The food was made with love. Ruth is such an amazing woman and just so damn beautiful. I

John G.

Yelp
Love this place Every time I'm in SLC stop by Hear gets busy on weekends but I come midweek early Trevor's Potato Burrito hits the spot and won't need to eat again until Supper Vegan friendly

John M.

Yelp
5th visit not once have I been disappointed! This time tried the onion rings with a cheeseburger onion rings the best Cheeseburger was really good also always fresh !

Brian R.

Yelp
Lovely spot to stop after a canyon hike...very friendly staff...excellent food! The ambience is just wonderful!

Cameron P.

Yelp
Food was very good. I got my usual diner food, chicken fried steak, and it was as good as I could expect. The real star, though, was the hot toddy lava cake! If we ever see it on the menu, you bet we'll be having it again. Service was great as you can imagine, and it feels as quaint and cozy as you'd like a local diner to be.

Christine C.

Yelp
This was such a fun dining experience. The outdoor patio was open and I went at around 8 PM. It was a little chilly, so make sure you bring a jacket. The tree covered patio was beautiful with a live band playing in the background. I had the pot roast and it was the best comfort food I've had in a long time. The service was OK. They were super busy.

Grace F.

Yelp
Everything was amazing! The mile high biscuits are like I've never had before. I had the poached salmon Benedict. My husband had the chicken fried steak eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was spectacular! It was definitely worth the wait we will be back.
