"Ruxbin opened its doors in 2010 to all kinds of critical acclaim. GQ and Bon Appétit named it one of the best new restaurants in America, and talks of greatness immediately spread. They didn’t take reservations at the time, and it was nuts. A few years have passed, along with the influx of press accolades and no reservations policy, but Ruxbin is still one of the best dining experiences around. The quiet, tiny shoebox of a restaurant is Perfect For Date Night, and also cool parents who always complain it’s too loud during a meal. The room is dark, ensuring no Instagram pictures will be taken, but it helps Ruxbin retain a sort of hidden gem feel even if that’s not actually the case. The excellence of Ruxbin starts with the room and decor. You’re greeted by a staff genuinely happy you’re there, and an exciting space that isn’t generically designed. Apparently hiring a budding artist works better than scraping pennies for an established firm. Ruxbin is decorated out of recycled material - church pews and car seat belts being two integral parts. And the result is a tasteful restaurant version of Will Ferrell/Mugatu’s Derelicte - KILL THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA. The same creativity and passion finds its way into the food. The menu might sound basic, but the execution is so good that seemingly simple ingredients will wow you in ways you didn’t think they could. An oyster trio served three different ways is inventive, foie gras with strawberries and watercress is picture perfect, and a pork chop accompanied with grilled peaches is more satisfying than any Netflix binge - Breaking Bad included. H*ll, even the bathroom entrance is innovative and fun. You’ll feel like you’re about to do your best Clark Kent impression on the way to becoming Superman. But don’t take that feeling too seriously - you’ll be your same mediocre self after you pee. You will, however, feel a lot happier after eating at Ruxbin, and it feels even better not having to share that experience on social media with your friends. Food Rundown Crudo Of The Day This obviously changes, but you’d be wise to order whatever it is if you’re a fan of fish. Our favorite has been a trio of oysters, the third of which is still smoking over some wood chips while it comes out on the plate. Foie Gras Foie Gras served with candied rhubarb, pistachios, brioche granola, strawberries, onion, and watercress. Balancing the foie gras out with some fruit plus the crunch of the pistachios and granola is a genius touch. Octopus Roasted octopus with chickpeas and a ginger scallion vinaigrette. Simple, tasty, and a good small bite. Berkshire Pork Loin The pork chop might be on the smaller side, but taste makes up for any misgivings about the size. The modest piece of meat comes with crispy hominy, grilled peaches, basil, and apple cider jus. The sweetness of the fruit and sauce is what makes this dish so good. Who would have thought grilled pears and pork together are a perfect match. Halibut Olive oil poached halibut over some crispy wild rice that rests in a pool of kimchi-tarragon sauce the fish was poached in. The fish is good, but the sauce is even better. There’s a reason they give you a spoon with this dish - don’t be shy. Chocolate Pot De Creme Yes, it’s a pot of dark chocolate with pecans and marshmallow fluff. It also comes with some little pastries meant for dipping, plus a small banana milkshake shot just because." - Sam Faye

"Ruxbin was a fine dining restaurant owned by the Mott St. ownership, located a few blocks south on Ashland Avenue. Despite attempts at remodeling and creating new menus, the restaurant closed last August after seven years of operation. The space remains vacant, with patio lights still strung on the sidewalk." - Ashok Selvam

So this place has the best food, a great value, a good friendly staff, not stuck up, wholesome atmosphere. Be sure to bring 8 people to take advantage of their largest butcherblock table and a bit quieter. This place is a great date night place too. 2017 had them renovate. It looks more serious now and might have lost a bit of it's quirky charm but the food remains great.

We had a delicious meal at Ruxbin this weekend! The menu is very small, as is the restaurant itself. I think we counted 32 total seats! I know they didn't take reservations last year, but they have since changed that which is nice - especially now that I've seen how small the space is. We didn't try one thing that I didn't like. I know the menu changes, but the standouts were: garlic fries, octopus appetizer, halibut, and veal. They also had an oyster appetizer that was really unique - 3 oysters each prepared a different way. The third was smoked with applewood chips and had a cover on it, so when you opened it up, the smoke billowed out. Delicious! Another plus is that it's a BYOB, with a $5 corkage fee for the whole table. Not bad at all. Finally, the bathroom was so cool! It had a darkroom door leading into it, and the wall was lined with old concert promo posters.

Is the wait worth it? Yes. I've literally turned around 4 times after been given a 2 hour wait time. Why must all the great, secret places be written up! Finally, slipped in at a 5:30PM slot with a line awaiting the doors to open. The menu changes seasonally, so repeat visits necessary. Had the Pork Belly Salad, Mushroom Toast, Fried Hand Pie. All delicious, but the Hanger Steak was the winner!

I've been wanting to go to Ruxbin for the last 8 months, when I tried to get a reservation for my birthday, but they told me they don't take reservations for groups larger than 6. I guess that makes sense though since it looks like the whole place seats 12-14 total. It's a cute, dark little restaurant that makes for a great date spot. It was the perfect spot for me and my best friend, who was visiting from the Bay area--- she loves any place that has BYOB and I really wanted to see what this French-Korean fusion place was all about. She ordered the trio oyster appetizer--- I forgot to tell her that it's pretty much pointless to order any shellfish or crustaceans in Chicago if you're from either of the coasts because it's pretty abysmal here--- she was disappointed with the oysters. We also ordered the octopus, which probably was our favorite--- it was cooked to perfection--- flavorful and not too chewy and rubbery which is the problem I usually run into when I order octopus. Ordered a butternut squash salad appetizer thing which I really enjoyed, but my friend didn't. Also ordered the Rohan duck breast, which I thought was great--- not too fatty like most other duck dishes that I get in other restaurants. Of course, food preferences range from person to person, and my friend who likes fattier duck thought it was good, but not great. We opted not to go for dessert since it was the night before Halloween and we had to cut back on carbs, but overall I really liked the food here. Service was great too. Also--- the bathroom is pretty interesting. It feels so hip and cool... like me!

One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. Unpretentious comfort-food with an innovative edge. The menu changes often, but everyone I've had here has been perfectly cooked in just the right portions with lots of great flavor. Only caveat is that lack of reservations can be frustrating. Go early when it first opens to get in quickly, otherwise you will have to put your name down and go to a nearby bar to wait.

is place was really unique and the bathroom is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time (once you check it out, you'll know what I mean). Everything we ordered was great and the wait staff was friendly and helpful. Very small establishment and by the looks of it, you wouldn't think it's anything special until of course, your meal comes out. We had to wait a LONG time but I have to say, it was worth the wait. Great place for a unique date-guys, you'll impress her that 1. you knew this place existed and 2. you're edgy and think outside the box.

I'm usually very opposed to fancy dining as I never feel that the price is worth the flavors that are given to me. Ruxbin is one of the few that I can say gave me an amazing culinary experience and not just a fancy plate of food. Besides the decent decor and great service, their menu is concise and diverse and the execution is flawless. My farmers ravioli was deconstructed and presented in the most beautiful way I have ever seen. Each part of the plate had its own color, texture, feeling. From foam to pea both, from 2 kinds of cheeses to gooey egg yolk, from thick pasta to perfectly cooked mushrooms. My meal felt extremely thoughtful and very delicious. The garlic fries were pretty tasty and the seaweed popcorn was a fun way to start our meal. Not related to the 5 stars, but after a bottle of wine I have to admit that their bathroom is the coolest thing in the world (a rotating door into a secret corridor = bathroom). I know, a little ridiculous, but its things like these that make a place memorable.

Ruxbin only has a few tables and doesn't take reservations, so show up early! I tried to go here twice before I actually got in. Both times, I arrived around 6:30 on a weekend, and they were so busy they wouldn't even add me to the waiting list! Finally I learned my lesson and arrived at 5:30. We were seated right away. Our table of three ordered two appetizers, three mains, and one dessert. My favorite dish was the octopus, but everything was delicious! Ruxbin is BYOB, and they allowed us to linger over our wine, despite the long line. I appreciate not being rushed out of a nice dinner. I will definitely be back!
