On the Grid : Regent Street Cinema

"Built in 1848, Regent Street Cinema was the first in the country to show moving pictures. In 1896, the cinema showcased the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe to a paying audience, and, as the curtain fell, British cinema was born. Re-opened by the University of Westminster in May 2015, reinstating one of the most historic cinemas in Britain to its former grandeur. The cinema offers exclusive premieres, repertory screenings, retrospectives, documentaries, animation and experimental cinema. You can also catch double bills, showcasing the best of home-grown British talent, world cinema and classic movies in this classic venue." - UsVs

Where was ‘Black Bag’ Filmed? All the Filming Locations for the Sexy New Spy Thriller

Used for George and Kathryn’s pivotal cinema date, this historic picture house provides a key plot location built around a cinema ticket stub. The rake of the seating is noted as being quite steep, giving a good view of the characters, and there was a buzz on set about filming there because it’s also regarded as the birthplace of British cinema, adding an extra layer of significance to the scene. - Phil de Semlyen

The birthplace of British cinema is truly a place to check out if you like a good old independent movie theatre. I discovered it as an MA student in UoW but come back for special screenings over the years. Was so great to see Die Hard on a big screen!

The bar is very cosy, warm and relaxing. The staff are helpful, friendly and kind to customers of all ages. I truly enjoyed spending time there. It’s a calm and comfortable place, also perfect for those who enjoy reading. I’ll definitely be back soon, even to watch a film.

My first visit to this cinema and I was highly impressed. I attended the Italian film series promoted by the film magazine Little White Lies. The Regents street cinema is the oldest in London it still has a working organ and on my visit it was played before the film. The seating is very comfortable and has excellent site lines. I will definitely be making another visit in the near future

People sitting in the same row with me were so distracting. They were talking and they told each other they will go to the toilet before going. One of them was even taking out of phone to film the movie for a while. She stopped after I stared at her. Another person was fidgeting with the plastic package of snacks while there is a moving conversation on the screen. I hope a staff will watch the movie with audience and stop such behavior. Or inform the etiquette of watching a movie in cinema. I think you can laugh, you can cry, but you can’t speak during the movie.

Fantastic small cinema near Oxford Circus. Has the best bar I have ever seen in a cinema and comfortable seats. A joy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely Phenomenal Service from Regwan, Joao, and Kate! I have to give a special shout-out to three employees who made my visit to see the Chainsaw Man movie nothing short of exceptional. Regwan, Joao, and Kate were at the front desk, and every single interaction I had with them was outstanding. They provided truly amazing, excellent customer service. Beyond just being incredibly efficient, they all had such a wonderfully positive and welcoming attitude. It is so rare to encounter service this phenomenal. This team is an absolute asset to your theater, and I hope their management knows what gems they have. Thank you, Regwan, Joao, and Kate, for making my visit perfect!

One of if not the oldest cinema in London! Often frequented by celebrities as this cinema is a little hush hush. Great staff, comfortable seating and not that many rude people on their phones the whole way through! Actually more people who want to watch what’s on the big screen rather than their little screen. Great membership offers too!
