Trokay

This is my favorite restaurant in California. I’ve had there tasting menus twice, and each time it was a new, miraculous experience. Their food is exquisite, the service is nice, and the ambiance is as expected. It’s a hidden gem in truckee and if you have the time and money I’d highly recommend it. It is worth the price, without a doubt. I had a pine ice dish about 2 years ago as one of the dessert courses and it was like eating the best blue bird powder day ever, with a hint of cozy cabin glow.

Prix Fixe Menu Review Hands down the favorite dish of the night were the Nantucket Bay Scallops. Everything on the plate worked together. It was fantastic. Many times you go through a meal with multiple courses and you have one or two that just fall short. The winter 2025 Prix Fixe did not have a miss for us. Each plate was delicious and well prepared. Zero negative comments for this meal. The service was excellent and everyone was friendly. It kept the atmosphere from being too stuffy, but still felt very professional.

Overall a really enjoyable meal. Had the 4 course and got to try most of the dishes sharing with my partner. Some really interesting flavors and standout dishes. The canapes, salad, and scallops were particularly tasty with great flavor and balance. However, a few of the dishes ended up feeling a little bit heavy/salty like the cauliflower soup, the soba sauce, and the short rib that was paired with the steak had a sauce that was almost gluey. The chocolate dessert had a great flavor but was too sweet. Similar with the coconut macaron, delicious but too sweet. The small caviar addition had delicious components, but the brioche was too thick and not toasted enough so the bite was overpowered by the bread. Wine pairings were solid in general, however the somm and one of the servers always felt like they were in a rush to get away from the table and made me feel a bit rushed during those interactions. Even with those nits I had a great time in a beautiful space and great food. I'd definitely come back again if I'm looking for fine dining in Tahoe.

Wife and I had a lovely 10 course tasting with them a few days ago and we’re still talking about it. The food quality was spectacular, the service is excellent, great wine list and a comfortable setting. Every single course was imaginative, delicious and wonderfully presented. The chefs are truly gifted and deserve your support. We can’t say enough positive things about Trokay, and can’t wait to come back.

We just had our anniversary dinner here. How does this restaurant not have a Michelin star? Some of the most incredible food we have ever had and it’s here in Truckee! We have been most disappointed with the truckee food scene especially for what it costs up here, but Trokay is absolutely worth the hype, expense, and your time. The flavors of every course were put together masterfully. I just wish we had gotten it together enough to come here sooner, what a gem to have in town. I hope anyone that is a foodie or just wants to be blown away by some amazing food/ flavors makes it to this restaurant. You will be impressed! The owners are amazing, just look at those resumes, and the service was wonderful. Definitely will be coming back!

Exceptional! We made reservations for my boyfriend’s birthday. We got the price fixe menu and the wine pairings. Every single dish was fantastic and we learned a ton about the wine we were tasting. Wine pairing = 2.5-3 glasses of wine matched with the courses you choose. I wish there would have been more California wines on the menu (I’m biased!) but the wine did not disappoint. Price fixe menu = four choices with two special treats from the chef. Exceptional flavors and presentation. There were at least five different wait staff we interacted with, and the host, all lovely and helpful. Total cost of the meal including tip and tax came to $635.00 for the two of us. We spent about 2.5 hours dining at Trokay and most of the next day talking about it. Highly recommend for a special occasion.

Woooowwwww! So glad we went here. We were hesitant at the outset when we tried to sit outside given the limited options and prices. However once we got going we were glad we decided to stay. The chefs tasting menu was truly special and something akin to a Michelin quality restaurant we’d have in the City. Can’t describe how delicious each dish was because it would take forever but I’m glad we memorialized each one with a quick photo to relive the special moments. Favorites were the “walk in the woods”, Rossini, black truffle pasta, and the olive oil ice cream. The wine flight was also superb. The service was also top notch, Jared and his team went out of their way to make the night special. Even at the end of the night he made recommendations of other Truckee spots, none failed us. Overall a very memorable dining experience which we would happily repeat. We’ll be back soon.

Food is incredibly fine and very tasty. Very clean inside with amazing wait staff and prices are reasonable. The snow piled up here is on blizzard level but city just chugs along. Drove thru and stopped here and when I drive back home I will stop here again... I really like this place

Well well well As I write this my mouth has been through a glorious road to heaven and back. When los lonely boys asked how far is heaven...if you put in "Trokay" in your GPS you'll have a better idea. If you paid a lot in taxes this year you deserve to treat yo self. Come here and do it . Make a rezzzy and go to food heaven. Thank you Trokay... Thank you.

I've been lucky enough to dine here several times over the years - both the 10 course and the 4 course menus. Presentation and flavors are always great. Service is friendly; they seem pretty accommodating of dietary needs, such as gluten-free. Wine pairings work well and have thought behind them. I'm subtracting a star for ambience - on our most recent visit, there were 3 other tables with children; one constantly crying baby right beside us, one kid towards the back was being entertained with cartoons on a phone/tablet without headphones, so we got to listen to that, too. My guess is this is more common with an early reservation than later, and I'm not putting all the blame on the restaurant, but when dinner for two costs $700+, that's just not cool. Maybe a baby sitter fell through or something, but if you're a parent doing this, it's inconsiderate and rude. I guess next time we'll try for a later reservation, and perhaps ask to sit at the bar if this happens again.

Wow. A hidden gem in the mountains. We visit Michelin Star restaurants around the world and this place is in the same caliber. Truly creative dishes and amazing wine pairings. We've been at least 4 times and it's a highlight every time we time to come up to Truckee.

Such a warm and friendly feel that isn't always felt in high quality restaurants of this type of cuisine. Michelin level preparation, flavor, and presentation.

I'm sad to write I did not enjoy my NYE dinner at Trokay. This was my 3rd time dining here, and the other 2xs were 5+ stars!! But this last time, was very disappointing. The restaurant was exceptionally busy, likely due to the holiday. I've never seen kids here before, but saw a bunch this time. We had the pre-fixe menu, I got the shrimp (ate 2, gave 1 to my bf) and I had the fish. I ate everything, but the food was just mediocre, my bf and I kept saying that the entire dinner. The service was OK, but not like it has been previously. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu, but she was a little bit awkward (but still nice/polite)! We asked for extra bread and jam, and the guy who delivered the extra jam slammed it on our table and then they told us we could buy it if we wanted to-I replied yes I know, we bought some last time. But it was weird, like they didn't want to give us extra bread or jam. I think my desert was the best dish I had this time...and then 20-30 min after dinner, I had the WORSE, most painful stomach cramps I've ever had! I'm thinking it was from my fish dish (or else it was the shrimp?). The pain lasted until the next morning. When you pay $800 for a fine dining meal, you have certain expectations about the food, service, ambience etc. And you don't expect to get sick, so I don't think we will be dining at Trokay anymore. We kept joking at dinner like we felt like we got "TROKAYED" and this was before I got deathly sick!!

Trokay is a phenomenal place to eat. I have been gluten free for over a decade now. My wife and I celebrated my 56th birthday in Tahoe. I went to medical school at UNR. we stayed in the Northstar area but a highlight was having dinner at Trokay.

Unpretentious for a fine dining restaurant. Great variety of dishes/flavors. Really fresh, seasonal ingredients. Awesome building and dining area. Great staff. Our favorite place in Tahoe, we've been 4 or 5 times. It's pricey, but I don't think that should be a surprise and it costs a lot to make food like that.

Really enjoyed my 4 course dinner at Trokay last night. The service was attentive and friendly. The mini biscuits with pepper jelly were great and I ended up purchasing two jars of the jelly. I overheard the server tell the table next to mine that Trokay used to be a cafe with pastries and jellies but converted to a restaurant, but the jelly is a nod to the old cafe. For the summer 2024 menu, I chose the summer salad, morels, tenderloin, and the peaches. All delicious and lovely presentation. After dessert, a tin of mini cookies was presented. From past menus I've seen on yelp, I may not have enjoyed it as much as I did last night because most of the options appealed to me. Hope to be back as long as the menu options look good (I am not much of an adventurous eater). Lots of desserts were sent out with a candle so it definitely seems to be a place to celebrate special occasions.

Got the 4 course dining menu and the dinner was just incredible! This place follows the general theme of fine-dining new American category restaurants and is amazing. The ambiance is cozy but clean and the staff service was extremely attentive and very informational. It's clear this restaurant cares about its impact on the truckee community and pays mind to its heritage. The food is great! They make some creative but balanced takes on soups, salads, entrees, and desserts. They also give a number of small bites between the courses that were my highlight. Strongly recommend checking out this place and the whole downtown strip!

Solid fine dining in the greater Reno-Tahoe area. Four of us got the set menu + caviar (super tasty) + wine, and ended up spending around $200/pp. Service was fine as of summer 2022, we had to nudge them on a few requests but it was during busy summer season. Overall good but not quite Michelin-level execution. The area doesn't have that many options compared to the Bay or even Sac though so as locals it's still on our rotation for special occasions. Def a fun spot to hit for tourists visiting beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Highlights: * The finest restaurant in Lake Tahoe, by far * A Michelin quality experience * World Class technique, presentation and taste * A Wow with every bite * $125 to $225+++ per person prix fixe menu and you need to pay in advance just like French Laundry, Per Se, Alinea and other top establishments * You can only get the larger menu by paying in advance but some same day reservations might be available for the smaller menu without prepaying We're serious foodies, we travel more for food than anything else. We travelled to Tahoe to try a little skiing after a culinary and wine visit to Napa and San Francisco and tried to find out what's great in the dining scene here. Bottom line, the culinary scene is lacking in Tahoe, with a few exceptions and Trokay is the exception. Our visit was on January 2. I did not know the pedigree of the owners before dining here, I just read it now and it makes sense. While dining I tried to figure out how did this place which serves world class food wind up in Truckee, which with no disrespect is not Aspen, Vail, Park City or New York. Well, the owners are from New York City, relocating here in 2011. And they're not just ordinary New Yorkers, John is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, the Harvard of Culinary Schools, who went on to work for Daniel Boulud at Daniel, David Bouley and more. His wife Nyna is a cheese expert and culinary creator in her own rite, and their talent shows. There are two prix fixe menus, we had the smaller one $125 at the time, seems to be $115 on the website today. There is another for $225 per person, plus 20% service charges, tax, beverages, etc. If you are a foodie, it's worth it. The wine list had about 100+ bottles plus dessert wines with about eight choices by the glass. It's a global eclectic list. Wine bottle markups average about three times retail, a little pricy. I don't mind paying anything for great food, it's hard work, artistry, spoilage, etc., the meal here is well worth it. But to pop a cork for three times retail, maybe 3-4 times wholesale, that's a little unfair imho, my only complaint. Onto the food. There was not one disappointment. We started with fresh baked breads and amazing chili crunch and preserves to spread on them. Then on to an outstanding cauliflower bisque, a salad of radicchio di Treviso with ricotta and kumquat, followed by delicious lobster lettuce wraps, a duo of Tasmanian ocean trout, Bryan and Katie Flannery's 28 day dry aged NY strip with juniper smoked Hollandaise, cabbage and Bordeliase, wild Alaskan halibut, coconut panna cotta with pomegranate and cardamom. If that sounds good to you, its all even better than it sounds. Servers were professional and knowledgable. The atmosphere is rustic chic casual. If you're on a budget, maybe this is not for you. If you're a serious foodie and have the money to spend, you have to come here.

We visited for the ten course tasting menu to celebrate a special occasion. The staff was kind and accommodating, checking on us but not too often. For the food itself, the highs were really high but the lows were low. Overall it was a ton of food, with several courses having multiple tasting elements. Definitely consider skipping lunch before you come. Much like the food, the wine pairings were underwhelming for some courses while incredible for others. Not having a Cab with some of the heavier dishes felt like a bit of a miss as California is known for its Cabs. The price point for this restaurant is high so I was surprised that they charge an additional fee for water and coffee, which is a bill that comes at the end. The restaurant had a great energy and I would recommend it for a celebration. We will definitely be back to try the 4 course option!

Trokay has been around for 8 years. Quite an accomplishment! To celebrate a little getaway, time for some fine dining and molecular gastronomy. Pro-Tip: making a reservation online requires prepayment but calling in does not. The hostess was very accommodating when we had to push our reservations back. When I stepped inside once we got past the warm and gorgeous decor, we were surprised to discover it was like pre-Covid capacity (~50 diners) - making me anxious and nervous. People were unmasked even when they weren't eating. They were happy tho! After some debating, we were hesitant to make a request to be moved outside. Jarrod, our excellent server, was empathetic and helped us. We did have to wait for 30 minutes for the outside seating to become available which we did not mind. We chose to select different courses from prix fixe menu, in order to test all the offerings: 1) Amuse bouche (shared) - gruyere gougere, herb breadsticks, and biscuits with charred onion honey were mind-blowing. They ought to open a bakery! 2) Palette cleanser - celery sphere was fun with interesting texture that bursts gently in your mouth. 3) Sopa/Salad - a) Pozole was nice and fresh. b) Salad of beetroot and sea buckthorn, ricotta and black quinoa was my favorite dish of all. Visibly pleasing like artwork. The quinoa was crispy as if it was popped like popcorn. I scrapped the sea buckthorn sauce which was similar to cranberry in flavor, providing a pop of orange/yellow color and a slight tartness. 4) Entree #1 - a) Duo of Tai Snapper, shiso, and white soy was a novel dish of snapper 2 ways deconstructed - sashimi and sushi rolls with shiso leaves, little cubes of soy and dollops of mayonnaise. It was another favorite of ours. b) Tortellini of English peas, cured egg, sunflower seed pesto was creamy but I wished the pesto had a stronger flavor. 5) Entree #2 - a) Wild Alaskan Halibut, ramp, morel, Parisian gnocchi was the first time I've had morel. Very tasty and great texture but the rest of the dish could use some more flavor. b) Roasted loin of spring lamb, artichoke, fava, sauce Cafe de Paris. There were also sweetbread and falafel. The lamb was tough. It was the only dish I didn't clear out. This course was our least favorite. 6) Dessert - a) Tahitian Vanilla, rhubarb, Medjool dates & b) Pistachio, Vairhona Grand Cru chocolate 7) Cookies - chocolate, macaroon, tamarind jelly cubes, chocolate chip, and oatmeal cookies came with the check. We packed them up to enjoy for another day. We relished the creativity and variety in the food as much as we enjoyed Jarrod's hospitable service. It was an incredible experience from start to finish.

Out in the Lake Tahoe area on a family vacation, and found this place on yelp in search of good food. My teen children have never been exposed to food prepared or presented this way, and I thought it was about time. The experience was excellent! The food was incredible. Definately not something most could afford or justify oftern, but if and when you can you will not be disapointed. Very friendly staff... Highly recommended. So many "firsts" for my kids including truffles, caviar, edible flowers to name a few.

My Husband and I invited a couple friends to celebrate there birthdays. We had the most amazing dinner from the amuse bouche to the desert! The 4 of us have tried most of the Michelin star restaurants in San Francisco and we all agreed how much Trokay deserved one. Every single dish was spot on in terms of flavor, texture and aesthetics. Especially, I would like to shine the spot light on the beef dish that not only brought out the amazing flavor of the ingredients but also had the perfect balance with acidity that we do not often find in this type of dish. Also, the service was impeccable provided by a very welcoming team. Thank you Trokay's team and Chefs John and Nyna Weatherson for this amazing culinary experience.

Our favorite restaurant in the area. Everything is amazing. The staff, the food, the desserts. The only problem is I have to drive to Truckee to eat there! Highly recommend!

Waitress was awesome - because food took so long to arrive that wine pairings were finished long before things arrived (45 mins for a course). Sommelier so bad that I'm leaving this review -- rude, patronising, forgot to come to us at one point until we reminded him (and he didn't apologise). 6/10 food reduced to a 0 by contemptible service all round.

This is a quaint little place that deserves a lot of attention! We went as a group of 2 families with ALL the kids... us adults just wanted a nice dinner, so we dragged our kiddos with us. Suffice it to say, this place is not kid friendly--and it shouldn't be! If I was anyone else, I'd be annoyed with our group! But I digress... the staff was gracious and really exceeded expectations for a delightful dinner. Would love to be back... without kids! Lol

This place was amazing! One thing I've always wanted to do was to go venture out to tasting menu restaurants and I'm so glad I found Trokay! The chef was super nice and I enjoyed talking to her between courses! The servers were great as well, I honestly fell in love with the ambiance of this place! Looks secluded and like a true fine dining experience! I can't wait to come back here in the future, eager to see what changes occur in the menu and what else they've brought in!

How in the world have I never been here before???? This place was FANTASTiC! While in Truckee this weekend, we decided to do something new for dinner, as we have a habit of going to the same places over and over again. After walking down the street and looking at menus, we decided on Trokay. I will admit, we were quite underdressed for such a nice restaurant, as most of the patrons were slightly dressed up, women in dresses or slacks and men with sports coats or button down shirts. Pretty sure this was where people were headed for special occasions (anniversaries, birthday, etc). I was surprised, since Truckee is so casual. However, even though we were not looking up to par, the hostess and server treated us very well. I think you can easily be in jeans here, but I recommend you go with "classy casual". First, the atmosphere. It was quiet. I love this, I appreciate when you can hear the server and have a nice conversation. The interior was nicely decorated, dimly lit, and for the ladies, please go into the restroom and check out the wallpaper. I kinda need to find a place to put this wallpaper of a lady taming bugs in my house....anyway.....on to the food. The menu had two options - a la carte or a fixed tasting menu. You have to do the same as your dining companion, and I highly recommend the fixed menu. You get a lot of little extras and fun experiences by doing it. We both had the vegetable salad to start and absolutely adored the flavors. For our next course, my partner had the ceviche and I had the soft shell crab. Both were great, but his was bright and fresh flavors, so we preferred his dish. For mains, he had the halibut and I had the corn hushpuppies. I know, sounds weird, right? But they the dish was amazing and I was so excited that they had a vegetarian option. Lastly, we had the chocolate dessert, which was nice, small and fine. But, the food was the real hit, dessert was a nice small ending. Those special things between course, amuse bouche's? They were fantastic. I cannot remember all of them or what they were called, but they made the dinner very special and very fun. They even ended the evening these tiny cookies that you could take home. Nice touch! Go here for an experience, it is on the pricey side, but well worth it.

I have put off writing this review because I really love Trokay. We usually have dinner there once a year when we come up to Tahoe. We love the various breads at the beginning of the meal and the delicious cookies at the end of the meal. This year we opted for the 10 course tasting menu and added the wine pairing for my husband. We paid somewhere around $900 for the meal and I only remember the cookies and breads. The rest of the meal was unremarkable. So sad.

Absolutely outstanding food and service. Michelin should be giving them a star. We went for our 28th wedding anniversary and loved it.

I got the 4-course meal here, and everything was so delicious. Four courses was already very filling for me, but there is a 10-course option also. This place had excellent service all around. Small bites: There were various small bites and some bread they brought out with the 4-course meal. Most notable among the small bites for me was a biscuit with some onion jam. The savory jam was packed with flavor and paired with the buttery biscuit so well. The Gruyère puff was also delicious. Butternut squash bisque: This was so creamy and flavorful. The butternut squash really comes through, and it is just the right amount of sweetness. Scallops: The texture of the scallops was perfect, and I appreciated that they did not overpower the natural taste of the scallops with too much sauce. There was some celery root on the side with some passion fruit sauce that added a tartness that paired well with the scallops. NY steak: The steak dish was my favorite! It was cooked perfectly and cut so smoothly. It came with a yuzu sauce and soy sauce-based glaze, and both were very tasty. The rice onigiri on the side was also surprisingly very buttery, but this paired well with the steak. Chocolate with lime sorbet: For dessert, I chose the chocolate, but some people in my group chose a bourbon and maple-glazed pear, which they said was delicious also. For the chocolate, I was surprised by how well it went with the lime sorbet. The lime sorbet was a bit sour to me at first, but good when mixed in with the chocolate.

My favorite meal in Tahoe, the creativity was through the roof! I love how chef John had incorporated the outdoor elements of Tahoe into the courses. Each bite, albeit, small was very tasty and surprisingly playful. There are two tasting menus the 4 course which was about $100 per person or the 10 course which was $200 per person. There were alot of courses in the 10 courses that I could eat but Mr could only have about 4 of the 10. And the whole table has to get the same tasting menu. So we opted for the 4 course (but as with these types of tasting menu places, they bring out little surprises in between each course that you end up eating more than you realize). They change their menu often to keep things exciting. I enjoyed their halibut a great deal, and their corn soup was amazing! My husband didn't think his beef tenderloin was anything special and wished he had opted for the boeuf rossini. I didn't care for the mint chocolate dessert. I think the next time we're in the area we'd come back! The place was smaller than I thought so it was very intimate and everyone was using their hushed voices like they had some naughty secrets. Fun! Feel free to dress up! Looking at the other restaurants in the area, Trokay is definitely hoity-toity, but without the attitude. Cheers!

04/29/22 Friday - My dear friend was celebrating a birthday and invited me and 5 other girlfriends to join her for the Prix Fixe meal at Trokay. The food and service were amazing. Can't wait to go back with our husbands someday.

Just had an unexpected experience at Trokay in Truckee . From our "walk in" reception to the final greeting good by . Unpretentious. A great family experience. Service. Presentation Flavor Totally unexpected fir me in Truckee . Price point is $$$ which is s bit out of my range but totally worth it .

6 Stars! This was our second time dining at Trokay and both were exceptional dining experiences. They would easily receive a Michelin star if they were located in a big city. Yet what's so cool is they keep the local Truckee mountain vibe and casual feel. The decor is rustic yet clean lines it a beautiful old building on main street. The Prix fix menu offers a picture-perfect 4-course meal with little extras thrown in to complete a fine dining experience. When I say picture perfect the presentation of food is artistic including the plates utilized. And of course, the food itself presents layers fo flavors with unique twists that tantalize your palate. Even the homemade baked goods are delicious. Wine pairings are always a great way to let someone else help you enjoy your meal with beverages that bring out the best in a dish. Only (and I do mean the only criticism is with the exception of the dessert wine the pours should be one or two ounces more so that the diner doesn't run out mid-course--I was very mindful to sip small amounts). Customer service is attentive, precise, helpful, and friendly. Not pretentious that you would expect at such a fine dining restaurant.

We celebrated our anniversary on our first visit to Trokay. Our experience all around was fantastic. We ordered the cavier and champagne starter, the 4 course meal accompanied by the wine pairings. All were fantastic and the service was equally as good. We will certainly be back.

We had previously dined at Trokay years ago and were excited to try it again for a special birthday dinner. The food was very good however the service for both food and wine was very inattentive and seemed to be reading from a poorly rehearsed script. We selected the prix fixed menu with the wine pairing. On arrival to the restaurant, we had to wait at the unattended host stand for several minutes until someone acknowledged us. Once seated it was another 10 minutes or so before we were offered Champagne and menus. The waiter did not offer to explain anything on the menu and came about 10 minutes later to take our order. I had the halibut which was good however the lamb my husband had was just average. For the price point of this restaurant, I would expect a higher level of service. On a bright note, the dessert and cookies at the end of the meal were exceptional.

I have dined at Trokay on 2 occasions, the first time was 6 years ago. I remember reading about Trokay and could hardly wait to dine there. My first visit was amazing. The food was perfect, they had good wines and an excellent staff. The ambience in the building is so warm and fun. If I could give Trokay a 5+ star review for this visit, I would. My 2nd visit to Trokay was in May of 2022. Everything was every bit as good as my first visit six years ago and again, if I could give a 5+ star review, Trokay would once again earn it. Trokay does a brilliant job of seasonal menus. They are a family run restaurant that for a smaller crew does an outstanding job of superb food and appropriate kitchen to table timing. Their small staff is warm, friendly, welcoming and engaged. Sit, back, relax and savor the food and experience here!!! In conclusion, I truly believe if Trokay was located in one of the big major cities, they would have a Michelin star. Thank you to Trokay for bringing amazing food to a small and great area! Rest assured, I will be back again later this year, and many more times to come. A visit to Truckee, or just passing through will mean dining at Trokay. I will NOT be waiting 6 years to visit Truckee and Trokay again.

It's so clear that the chef knows what he's doing, but from the host that barely spoke to us and made no eye contact, to the very erratic and unfocused food, it was just disappointing. There's potential to pick a direction for the food and go there, but instead it's too much and it's all inconsistent and lackluster. I wouldn't say we felt welcome or that the staff was on top of the service, which is a shame because there was a lot of technique in how the food was made and presented. Not ever going back. I hate posting bad reviews but I felt mislead by the other reviews for this restaurant.

Absolutely insane. They should make this a Truckee landmark. Chef John just keeps evolving and his restaurant with it. The service is spot on... these guys need a Michelin Star or 3. No joke.

Their regular fine dining is terrific but today we tried their Burgers & Brews luncheon special which they bring out several times a year. Best way to describe is wonderful service with a fantastic burger & fries at bargain price.

Trokay was on my list since Yelpstronomy, a food event in Reno. Those spheres were memorable. They offered one of those spheres as an amuse bouche with my tasting. The sphere was in a different flavor - apple celery - while it was good, it didn't get me excited like the grapefruit flavor (I think it was grapefruit). The tasting menu takes you on a 10 course molecular gastronomic adventure, which took about 2.5 hours. The amuse bouche was ok. The celery apple sphere reminded me of one of my green juice drinks. The chip on a branch was cute. All the courses had complex components with different textures. It is actually difficult to explain what one dish tasted like. I can only say that each dish was different from the previous and that I truely enjoyed each one. There was a story behind each dish and the server talked about each dish as it arrived. The portions are very small but I didn't leave hungry. I was full, and I can eat! The pace of the meal and the richness with some of the food was enough. There was bread too. I had two different wines by the glass and they were both very nice. The sparkling had finer bubbles and the red was very smooth. I don't usually find that quality of wine in choices by the glass. Is it worth the price? Well it is not like you can make it yourself, at home, so I think it is worth it! You're paying for an experience and someone's creativity. Service was friendly and not pretentious. They have a new menu twice per year. I guess I'll be back when the menu changes. Bathroom was clean but no seat covers.

Stopped in on our way through Truckee. Made a reservation and WOW!!! It was so good. Beautiful bottle of wine ( choice of the sommelier ) wonderful food! Caviar starter was great, great service. If you want a mountain sheik dinner this is the place to go

Wow! What an unexpected and fantastic meal in downtown Truckee. Trokay is a fine dining experience and is definitely on par with some of the best Michelin star restaurants in the Bay Area. The pre fixe menu is definitely the way to go if it is your first time here and there were not one, but four surprises along the meal that absolutely delighted us. There were three dishes that had tastes that we had never experienced before and the portions were surprisingly good. The service from our server Jerrod was phenomenal, and matched the excellent ambiance of the restaurant and great bites. There were a number of occasions during the meal that I was literally blown away by the amazing combinations of flavors. Exceptionally refined but never stuffy, Trokay is a must visit if you enjoy fine dining, and a fantastic way to finish the day in beautiful Truckee.

So, a week ago last Monday my wife and I ventured out in the midst of a decent sized blizzard to enjoy an incredible meal here. The chef and his team deliver a great food experience and a great dining experience. You have your choice of À la carte, a prix fixe menu or a chef's tasting menu. We wanted to go with the tasting menu but due to the total lack of diners that night (a party of 24 cancelled due to the weather) we went with the prix fixe as we would have felt guilty being the only one's there for hours on end. We also decided to go with a single wine pairing due to the horrible weather and Roxy (our sommelier / hostess) had no problems with that. Our waiter was Jarred and between Roxy and Jarred we received fantastic service. I can't say enough good things about those two seasoned professionals, the service they delivered, their knowledge of both food and wine and also how they shared their love of the Truckee area and their thoughts on where to eat and what to do. The food was sublime, the portions just the right size and the pacing was spot on. One of the absolute highlights was the Bisque of California Haas Avocado which was so deeply layered with flavor that every bite was an experience. We finished the meal with two desserts, including a Buddha's hand citron with a poppy seed cake and a white fir sorbet. the sorbet was incredibly unique and I still have mixed feelings about my like or dislike but I appreciate the challenge to my palate that it delivered. We look forward to our next trip to Truckee and a repeat visit to Trokay to consume the chef's tasting menu. Again, thanks to Roxy and Jarred as the front of the house team and to the whole back of the house crew who cooked us an incredible meal on a really bad night weather wise. Chef John and Nyna Weatherson have built a great fine dining restaurant and I encourage everyone who visits Truckee and loves food to make this a part of their trip.

Staff: Friendly staff that is knowledgeable and know their menu and wine pairings. Our hostess and waiter greeted us upon entry and we were seated immediately. Our waiter explained the prix fixe menu versus the regular menu and how the alcohol pairings worked for the prix fixe. We ordered the prix fixe and he explained everything as each item was brought out with perfect detail. Food: Despite others saying the portions were tiny and the portions looking tiny, the amount food after all the courses are served was actually more than I could finish. It's a lot of courses so you get a fair amount of food in total. Each plate was well balanced and unique in flavor. I liked almost all the dishes served. The only complaint I have (hence the missing star) is the creme brulee for the dessert. The creme brulee was way too eggy and did not have the correct consistency for that dessert. I was disappointed considering how all the courses leading up to the dessert were really good. Location: The restaurant was clean and had a nice atmosphere. There was a bar near the entrance with a few seats and it looked like people could dine at the bar if I remember correctly. Definitely recommend people to try this place.

We have been wanting to come here for a while. We had a 10 course pre fix meal that was about $225. We needed up with more than 10 course with caviar add on and some free dishes. Wine prices were very reasonable. The was a wine pairing for $120. We didn't choose the wine pairing. Highly recommend making a reservation. There was also a 4 course meal that was about $110. I'm sure that was delicious as well.

Mountain casual fine dining does not get better than this! Park City has nothing with which to compare, nor Aspen, Vail, Telluride, Steamboat Springs, or Jackson Hole, for that matter. The key is proximity to San Francisco and food purveyors in the Pacific Northwest who supply Chef John W. and crew with bounty from farm, field, forest, ranch, and sea from which exquisite dishes are created in tune to the seasons. An in-house pastry team prepare deserts, breads, and truly spectacular cheese plates that showcase rare, artisan cheese with pickled vegetables, savory sauces, and salty bites perfectly presented on large white rectangular serving dishes. If you arrive here at 5pm, you can order half priced wine by the glass to accompany a cheese plate, then start your dinner proper by asking them to decant a wine ($30 corkage on 750ml bottles) and choosing either a la carte options or just going with the fixed tasting menu. Small extras along the way add up to a very rich and elaborate range of tastes, textures, and culinary styles, similar to a meal at Manresa or Gary Danko. The staff here are extremely outgoing and friendly, fully in line with the laid back but elegant Truckee vibe, which is a welcome contrast to more pretentious big city eateries where you can at times feel looked down upon. Not so here! A family atmosphere prevails, and the food, while top quality, also seems comforting and familiar, like the wild mushrooms you picked as a child with your uncle, the rich seafood or chicken broth soups your mother made when you were feeling sick or blue, or the chewy, gooey oatmeal cookies you made with your little brother over the winter holidays. I especially loved the use of local ingredients and soft, sensual textures to many dishes that were fragrant and mouth-filling without heaviness or excess. There were no culinary tricks employed to enhance the ingredients or intense spices used to mask the natural flavors. The cooking techniques brought out the inherent qualities of the foods assembled on the plate, without flashiness or showboating. The chef's touch was light and precise; he let the food shine. Fresh single origin coffee from Temple Roasters in Sacramento is also an added bonus at the end of your meal, which easily might last more than two hours. And the desert courses are superb! Make this a must do sort of experience the next time you are in the Lake Tahoe or Reno area!

This restaurant truly deserves a Michelin . Food is delicious. Service is top notch. Never seen when the whole restaurant is serving your table. Food got to the table same second for seven people. Little touches that were sent in between meals were really tasty and interesting to try. Thank you!

My friend was turning 60 and has had Trokay on her radar for this milestone birthday ever since we experienced them at Yelpstronomy last fall. In addition to their regular menu, Trokay offers a Prix Fixe menu (4 couses $105) as well as a Chef's Tasting Menu (10 courses $210). I was interested in the 4 course simply because my budget doesn't allow me to spend $210++ for one meal, however, when ordering either the Prix Fixe or Chef's Tasting, everyone at the table has to do the same thing. She had her heart set on the Chef's Tasting Menu and I was grateful that another friend was willing to pick up the difference which allowed me to particiapte in this AMAZING meal. If you like to try different things and if chemistry is your thing, this is a "must-have" meal. We arrived for our 5:30 reservation about 10 minutes early and were seated immediately. We were the only party there that early so we had our choice of where to sit. The birthday girl wanted a booth so she could snuggle with her honey and my friend and I were able to sit in regular chairs which suited us nicely. Our waiter, Jerrod, greeted us and explained what to expect for the evening. The guest of honor has some food allergies which she notified them of in advance. Jerrod explained that they had prepared special items where necessary to accommodate her needs. He was well informed which I was impressed by. At no time did he seem bothered by the special requests. He was a fantastic server! All of the courses were small but delicious. At first I thought we were going to have to go have dinner someplace else afterwards but we left feeling comfortably full. We started out with biscuits, bread sticks, and a pastry. Accompanied by two different jams. This was followed by a sphere of deliciousness (Amuse Bouche). Next came the Snow and Ice (frozen then microplaned foie gras, sea urchin cream, caviar, and microplaned green apple). The foie gras looked like panko bread crumbs but as soon as it hit your mouth, it had the amazing smooth and creamy texture you would expect from foie gras. The second course was called Fire and Smoke. It was covered when delivered to the table and we could smell the juniper smoking as soon as it left the kitchen to make it's way to us. It was pureed white asparagus topped with microplaned smoked trout farmed at nearby Mt. Lassen and smoked trout roe with carmelized black garlic and crisp agrete. Jerrod brought us a trio of bread with butter. The favorite at the table appeared to be the potato focaccia. It was toasty and perfect. The third course was the Walk in the Woods. The forest floor was a brioche soil atop a wax bean succotash, topped with fresh wild herbs and an earthy black truffle vinaigrette and calendula flowers. Course #4 was a Taste of the Sea. Something was broken in the kitchen so instead of the rock crab we were given a tempura soft shell crab over a red coconut curry sauce, a slice of compressed coconut and home made ramen noodles garnished with sea beans. The fifth course was a tortellini filled with Berkshire pork soup and topped with a beautiful little garlic flower. It was served on a large spoon and the temperature of the soup was perfect. Course #6 was a perfectly cooked squab (pigeon breast) and a slow cooked squab leg confit with a horseradish and potato croquet served over a citrus sauce. It was accomapnied by nasturtium and brassica (a broccoli variation). The seventh course was Tournedo Rossino. A Certified Angus Beef Tenderloin Filet topped with seared foie gras. Sauce was a pairing of black truffles, ramp chimichurri and a ramp bearnaise sauce as well as grilled and pickled ramp and some yarro. The seared foie gras was definitely the standout for me. I loved the creamy texture and smooth flavor. I took the tiniest bites possible just so I could savor it as long as possible. The 8th course came out smoking. It was topped with smoldering fig leaves which, when removed, revealed Mission Fig slices and the most amazing Sophia goat cheese wrapped in a brined fig leaf with a tiny bit of honey balsamic on the side. Jerrod called this a crossover dish because it featured both sweet and savory elements. The Ninth course consisted of 3 small bites of sponge cake, red currants three ways (fresh, pressed with sugar, and fermented) White Fir sorbet, black currant gelee and some frozen then microplaned wine. The white fir sorbet had a slightly sweet but earthy flavor. The tenth and final course was a nod to Lake Tahoe. Valrhona Grand Cru Chocolate. A beautiful blue lake of white chocolate consomme with small mountains of chocolate on the side. The chocolate is to be dipped in to the lake. What we didn't find out until later was that when citrus is added to the lake, it turns pink. Luckily, somebody didn't finish their lake so Jerrod was kind enough to bring us some lemon and lime wedges so we could try it. I don't think the birthday girl ever stopped smiling!

This restaurant has a beautiful location in truckee. It has a warm cabin feeling. The food has flavors of the woods that we didn't know we could taste! It has been tasty both times we have gone. We always do their wine pairing too!

Enjoyed a wonderful dinner here over the weekend. Such a great gem in downtown Truckee. We opted for the prix fixe menu and were delighted with the presentation and flavors of our choices. Also included the cheese supplement to share. Service was excellent and they had a nice beer and wine selection. A definite must!

We made a reservation for dinner on a Saturday of a holiday weekend. We opted for the prix fixe with wine pairing. Quality of the food was great. The service was also very attentive albeit I wish the pace wasn't so fast given the cost of the whole experience but I think the restaurant closed early around 9pm or so. I do agree with previous reviews that their portion size was very off. Now I'm a small woman and I don't eat very much. Usually, after a full prix fixe meal I can't bring myself to finish the dishes, but these portions were so small that I was able to eat every single thing on the plate and was not really "full". Specifically our meal consisted of a few pieces of kale in a salad, a single scallop, a single 4-inch long slice of steak and a small 1.5-inch piece of cake. I understand that presentation at fine dining restaurants are different and I've been to my fair share of Michelin star restaurants, but fine dining doesn't necessarily mean not enough food. So quality of food was great, but $145 for a meal (which is higher than many Michelin star restaurants) where you don't leave full was not really overall satisfying for the price.

For my 41st birthday, we did the tasting menu with wine paring and added the caviar option. Do it. JUST DO IT. Amazing service,the chef even signed my birthday menu. The atmosphere was old school Truckee classic. Thank you so MUCH.

We're so fortunate to have Trokay so close to us in Reno. This is a remarkable restaurant that could be found in any great American city, yet chef/owners John and Nyna Weatherson chose to open it in Truckee. This talented couple, along with their absolutely amazing GM Roxy D and incredible staff, have all facets of this experience covered. From the moment you walk through the door you'll know you're in for something special, and as the meal progresses, you'll see that no detail was left out. Chef John helms the kitchen, out of which comes food that you will surely make you think. You'll think about the presentations. You'll think about the flavors. You'll think about the textures. You'll think about how it was made, but never quite figure it out. And from all of that thinking will come dialogue, discussion, and meaningful conversation with whoever you choose to share the experience with. From a loft high atop the dining room, Chef Nyna handles all of the pastry for the restaurant. Her dishes will appear recognizable, but after one bite, you'll realize these are far from what you expected. The pumpernickel bread stands out as one of the most remarkable bites of the evening. A lighter colored brown bread boasting deep, rich, roasted grain flavor, with hints of sweetness from chocolate and raisins, all melded together with a light glaze of beautiful butter. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the service team here because, in my opinion, they have the toughest role in the entire operation. The team here understands each dish from all angles. Questions about ingredients, preparation, and plating are all expertly answered. Dishes are delivered to the table with ladies served first, and always from the right, and the table reset after each course. They are simply incredible, and a team that could teach others a lot just through observation, but better yet consultation. The Chef's tasting menu is the way to go here. It changes quite often and highlights ingredients at the peak of the season. If you choose the 10-12 course menu, make an early reservation because you won't want to rush. We opted for the 6-7 course menu and that took 2+ hours to enjoy. As a tip, you can add an entree from the menu to a tasting, just ask your server. From our tasting menu, I truly enjoyed the salsify jerky and papadam. It was just so unexpected, and something I wished I'd had more to enjoy! The sweetbreads with black garlic were outstanding. Perfectly crispy, in a slightly sweet and creamy aioli with deep, rich pools of black garlic glaze studding the presentation. The Kauai White Shrimp entree that we added was exceptional as well. These shrimp taste like lobster, sweet and succulent, but are delicate and light. When thinking about dining at Trokay, it's important to realize that this is an experience, and not just a meal. The cost will be high, but every dollar worth it. You will not leave disappointed.
