Trattoria Sora Lella

Very authentic Roman cuisine. We went for lunch and it was full of Italians eating lunch - always a good sign. It's either degustation or minimum two courses, excluding dessert. It is true they tell you that when you walk in the for. I had the "Sorra Lella" lunch degustation (which is the cheaper option) as it was recommended by our extremely helpful waiter. The meatballs were sensational and the rest of the meal very, very good. The wine we were recommended was also excellent. This is not fine dining and doesn't try to be but it is as authentic a Roman lunch as you are likely to find.

This is a restaurant with an attached gelato take-away window along Via di Ponte Quattro Capi at Isola Tiberina. They offer up around 20 flavours, available in cup or cone, prices similar to what you find at Gelateria shops around the city. We stopped by for gelato here while sightseeing in the area. Tried their chocolate, coffee and pistachio flavours, found the texture creamy but less smooth compared to other gelatos on this trip. Chocolate had quite a few ice crystals but other wise tasted fine. Coffee was interesting flavour, not sure we'd choose this one again, pistachio was nutty and overall pretty good.

The café is close to the Vatican, and the prices are quite reasonable for the area. I had the carbonara, which I really enjoyed, and we also tried a light, pleasant house wine. My boyfriend ordered the Italian meatballs in tomato sauce (I never remember what they’re called), and he liked his dish as well. We finished with tiramisu,which was wonderful.The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and we even met a lovely couple and spent a very nice evening chatting with them. We waited less than five minutes at the entrance. We went there on the recommendation of our Roman friends, and we left completely satisfied.

A historic trattoria with precise and friendly service. The cheese tasting was excellent and well explained. The battered mushrooms were not particularly impressive, while the supplì were good. The meatballs had a very fine grind, but the excessive use of marjoram unbalanced the dish; the sauce had the right consistency but was somewhat flat in flavor. The carbonara was excellent, with a nice creaminess and perfectly cut guanciale (both in thickness and length), well cooked. Still, it could have used a stronger push of savoriness (more pecorino) and a touch more pepper. The pasta was cooked well, though 30 seconds less would have made it closer to the ideal al dente texture. The maritozzo was decent, enhanced by an outstanding chantilly gelato – silky, with just the right creaminess and texture. Ingredients throughout were of high quality. The price felt a bit excessive, even considering the location, the ingredients, the service, and the historic character of the place. Around €10 less per person would have been fair. Overall, though, it’s worth the experience.

We have had excellent experiences daily and had a great impression of local people until visiting Sora Lella. Food was amazing as some of our well travelled friends highly recommended also who visit Italy frequently. We were told that this place is where we should go if we wanted to try authentic Roman cuisine. Especially after we were disappointed with some other places with food. However, not everyone’s money is the same money. We did not know that this place was so fancy for the staffs to treat us like that. Rang the doorbell to get it and waited outside for over 10 minutes for someone to come out to ask if we had a reservation. We were in casual clothes as we got there after roaming around the city all day. We were not that hungry and we do not eat big portions either but only course meals were available as it is their policy. So we ordered appetizer+pasta and I asked for a half portion as the menu said that I could. The waiter had to go check with the chef if the chef was okay with it. Also, asked for less salt as I keep my diet that way but I was told it was not possible. We also ordered two glasses of wine and they offered a half bottle instead. So we said okay because it is about the same. They told us the price of the bottle as they wanted to make sure that we could afford it(?). It was a really interesting service in my opinion. Usually I’d get a wine listing or recommended pairs not the waiter telling me the price without telling me what kind of wine I am getting. We were seated by the counter and the one waiter(not our waiter) made me feel uneasy whole time as he stared at me every time he came by the counter. I realized that I was the only Asian but not sure if it was because of my race. The lady at the counter did not greet us either. They were always by us talking loud as well. Took us about 30 minutes to order our food. Saw other people getting food before us and leaving before us. I give 1 star for their overall service because it doesn’t allow me to give zero. Summery: Food is great. Much less salty than other places we have been to. The staffs are nice if you are well dressed. Go hungry if you want to be treated well and order full. Book a table before you go. We saw people being turned away. Very over priced for the service and the food. Half bottle wine was €60 but I’d honestly pay half the price especially when it’s a half bottle at a restaurant.

What an amazing spot to enjoy traditional Roman cuisine! It's clearly an old school spot popular amongst both tourists but also locals. They have a wide variety of food and drinks, everything prepared with utmost care. Everything was flavorful, you could taste the freshness of the ingredients. They do have a 2 plate policy per person, but it's worth it to try more than one item. The service was also super friendly and kind, anticipating your every need with perfect timing. Also, the restaurant is a little building on the Isola Tiberina and has gorgeous views of the river, it's really cozy (but with great air conditioning). A bit pricey compared to other restaurants in the area, but its quality explains! Grazie mille.

We were there 10 years ago and we had an amazing experience. Home-made delicious food and a true italian feeling of an osteria. Now a days the food is still delicious but there is a 'in-force' two dishes menu per person and price-sizing of plates is a bit off. If you are around is still worth if you want to pay the price but for me it has lost its charm.

I wish I could give a top rating here, but our waiter pulled a fast one on us which lost them a customer and our recommendations. This place, unlike the vast majority of restaurants has “rules” on what/ how much you order. Trying to understand the rules and satisfy the owner’s demand of what you order is off putting. That being said we passed the rule book with our order and enjoyed all the food. The waiter told us he was bringing an extra starter to taste as a “gift”. In the end the “gift” ( pumpkin parmigiana) was on the bill. He told us since we ate it he was charging us. It was ridiculous, but speaks volumes about this place. They should focus on well prepared food and service and not trying to dupe customers. I can’t recommend due to above. Go elsewhere.
