"I’ll never forget the first time I lined up at Magnolia's original Bleecker Street location with its blue awning and curtained windows. It was 2007. Sex and the City had summited its tulle-fluffed apogee, but Magnolia had just launched the 'Carrie' cupcake. (Remember the episode with Carrie and Miranda eating vanilla cupcakes topped with pink buttercream and talking about Aidan? That’s the 'Carrie'!) Sadly, by the time I made it to the counter, they were all out. I was asked if I wanted a banana pudding instead. Crestfallen, I said no. Silly, because, almost two decades later, I would swap out a cupcake for it any day of the week. Fluffy, creamy, with slices of real banana, and reminiscent of box puddings (in the best way), a tub of this can feel like the perfect panacea for the world’s troubles. Carrie and Aidan might be done, but New York's love affair with Magnolia's banana pudding lives on." - Kat Chen

"Classic banana pudding comes from this long-running bakery." - Nadia Chaudhury

"A New York icon and the obvious choice for dessert, this original West Village location is famed for its heavenly cupcakes and legendary banana pudding and is certainly among the most charming." - Sophie Mendel

"The cupcakes at the New York-based bakery chain may have become famous from a cameo in Sex and the City, but locals know to go for the banana pudding. Each container is packed with banana slices, lush vanilla pudding, and vanilla wafers that crumble and squish — the banana flavor is strong in every bite. There are multiple locations." - Eater Staff

"You know what? Magnolia Bakery makes a good cupcake. Yeah, there are now about a million locations and it’s kind of a tourist trap, but Magnolia didn’t get famous by serving dry, flavorless cupcakes. Their classic vanilla cupcakes taste like dipping a stick of butter in a bowl of sugar, in a good way, and the red velvet and chocolate flavors are textbook examples of the form. The original location is on Bleeker Street in the West Village, and yeah, it’s kind of charming in that “I love New York” kind of way. Their beloved banana pudding is also very much worth the hype." - carina finn koeppicus
