We came here for the dumplings, but the menu looked impressively authentic. My soup was delicious, and the dumplings were perfectly juicy. The place wasn’t too busy, the service was quick, and I spotted a few other dishes on the menu that I’d definitely love to try next time.

We ordered off the American menu and honestly it was some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. The meat was cooked to perfection. The chicken wings are large and delicious. The staff were polite and attentive. The food came out piping hot. 10/10 recommend.

3.5 star. Having lived and traveled to many parts of asia, the taste and flavors of the food here is authentic. However there are somethings that can be improved. The hot and sour soup was a smaller portion than usual servings in convoy and barely had any ingredients in it. Usually you would find pork, bamboo shoots, black fungus and eggs in the soup, however there wasn't any in ours just some tofu. The flavor of the soup was great but lack of ingredients was a bit odd. The scallion stir fry beef was not very good. Quality and quantity of the meat can be improved. The steamed shrimp with garlic and noodles was delicious. The flavors were great, noodles were cooked to perfection, however the shrimps were a bit over cooked. The best dish of the night was the preserved vegetable fish. It came in a large bowl (as it usually does) and the tilapia fish was very tender and perfectly cooked. The ingredients were very straightforward, fish and preserved vegetables, usually this dish comes with more ingredients. Broth was tangy and spicy. Mapo tofu was average. Overall it was a good meal for a decent price. We had an enjoyable meal. Service was friendly. Plenty of parking in the mall.

A nice addition to Rancho Bernardo community! We ordered salt and pepper chicken, beef chow fen, Sichuan style twice cooked pork belly and soup dumplings. The pork belly dish tasted like the one that I had in China. Salt n Pepper chicken flavor was good but chicken was thin and a bit too chewy and dry. The soup dumplings had thin wrappers and tasty soup. Overall, they were pretty good and authentic. The restaurant is spacious and pleasant and the staff was friendly. It’s a place to go back to.

It's pretty great to see one of the greatest Chinese cuisine types now available in San Diego. The type called HuaiYang cuisine, the region is kinda near Shanghai, but their tastes are slightly different. The HuaiYang foods here are pretty authentic, I love the tofu and bacon dish. Also their meatballs are great! The soup is very tasty as well. If you want to try different types of Chinese cuisines, you should come to try out.

Finally! I’ve been looking for Chinese food in this town that rivals NYC Chinatown. Here it is! Tender scrumptious soup dumplings. Perfectly cooked shrimp with the freshest peapods in lobster sauce. Kung pao - sublime. And green beans were simply amazing. Nothing greasy or salty. Fantastic, everything. Don’t miss this place!

Legit. I lived in China for several months years ago and became semi obsessed with the cuisine and avoid Americanized or fake Chinese food. This place is legit, we've gone 3 times, tried a bunch of different dishes. Regionally it's a bit of a mix, but there's a full on China-Chinese menu as well as the English one, and the food is very like what you'd get at a good restaurant in a Chinese city. Every time I've been if gets pretty busy and probably 80% of the clientele are Chinese. That's strong evidence that my opinion is on point.

Came here back to back in 2 weeks. Food is tasty and good presentation. Price is good too. On a Thursday evening, they were busy. Also many take out orders. We also like the center calligraphy print at the restaurant. It really give an authentic Chinese feel.

You know you've stumbled into a hidden gem when it's extremely packed and everyone is eating family style meals with chatter happening all around you. Nothing fancy in decor, menus are written both Chinese and English w/ photos for visual folk like myself. The portions are HUGE. More than enough for my family of four and left overs taken home. (THEY PACK IT FOR YOU TOO!) We ordered staple comfort dishes; garlic green beans with pork, salt & pepper toasted squid, fried rice, egg drop soup, honey walnut shrimp.... Everything came out extremely fresh and HOT! The prices were amazing for the portions you get. Service was good granted how busy they were. Water was refilled without delays, and food came out with expressed gratitude for waiting. I can't wait to come back to try some other dishes that we saw our neighboring tables order. (They were big portions I think beef brisket soup with glass noodles and buns?) Definitely a Must TRY!

Decided to give this place a try after my husband and friend raved about how good this place was. I believe they went a couple months back to catch up and ate in house. I came here for takeout during the month of April and was pretty disappointed with the portion size. I ordered the cumin lamb and barely got any meat with a whole bunch of vegetables for ~$26. The lady behind the counter was nice, but it's not worth going back for such sparse portions. Parking is tight inside the plaza in front, but you can park in the back and walk over.

Hands down a 5 star experience. The server was so friendly and informative. Even tho we arrived 30 minutes before closing she didn't make us feel rushed. It was cute and quiet inside. There was a TV playing some Chinese cooking show on it which made the anticipation for the food so much better! There are some unique items on the menu that I've never seen before like jellyfish which intrigued me but we didn't get adventurous this time. Had to get the wings of course. They were huge! Crispy and cooked perfectly inside with great flavor throughout. The cream cheese wontons were the best I've had too. My friend and I shared the shrimp in garlic sauce and the beef chow fun. The quality of the ingredients really shows. Tender savory pieces of beef and fat plump shrimp that melted in my mouth! I 100% plan on returning to try more things. The server suggested some items for next time as we checked out. Thank you for an amazing meal! Leftovers were excellent too.

I felt like I was in someone's home when I walked in. Family atmosphere! The servers treated us like we were part of their family and they were caring for us! The menu is so extensive and the portions are gigantic! You need to come with a big group or be ready for leftovers! The food was very delicious. Solid quality and feels like homemade cooking rather than restaurant produced. The green beans are ADDICTING!

FULL DISLOSURE: If you are not a person who has patience, do not come here. There is one chef, one waiter, and two ladies who help clear the tables and bring dishes out. It takes a long time to order the food and an even longer time for it to be delivered to the table. Also, the dishes do not come out all at once. This team of four really does an incredible job in keeping the restaurant afloat, but you just have to understand that is a very small operation and you have to wait for your turn to get dishes on the table. If you have time to leisurely eat, are patient and understanding, then you have to check out this restaurant. It is truly a hidden gem! My family came here to celebrate my dad's 83rd birthday and we unanimously agreed that the wait was definitely worth it! We ordered the following dishes to share family style: - Steamed garlic sauce prawns - Sautéed gluten with mushroom and bamboo shoots - Spicy wontons and chili oil - Mapo tofu - Leek and pork dumplings - pan fried rice cake soup (sizzling rice soup) - Beef chow mein - Braised pork belly Personally, I enjoyed all of the dishes, except for the first two. I thought the steamed garlic prawns had too much garlic and the prawns for overcooked. I also wasn't a huge fan of the sautéed gluten with mushrooms and bamboo shoot only because I don't like gluten, but flavor-wise, it was delicious. All of the other dishes were really good! The price was considerably cheaper than other Chinese restaurants while the portions were relatively the same. Overall, great value, great food, and friendly but slow service. Will I come here again? That's a definite yes if I'm not in a rush!

Ordered for pick up via door dash - when we came on a Sunday evening, it was pretty packed with Chinese diners (which we took as a good sign for more authentic food lol). It took a while to get our food although we did place a fairly larger order. We ordered the pepper fish fillet which was my favorite dish, the fish was so tender and the fish was very flavorful. The Shanghai rice cakes were nice and chewy. The cauliflower was delicious but lacked a bit of flavor, and orange chicken was crispy. The only downside I'd say is that each dish was incredibly oily, even for Chinese food. But portions were large and service was good.

Came here for lunch and I was blown away by the Szechuan beef noodle soup. Huge portion, perfect spice level, perfectly tender beef. The bok choy was excellent and the noodles were springy. 10/10!

Great Chinese food and unique dishes. The owners and staff are friendly, and service is good, and fast... portions are generous and very tasty! my favorite is the Lionshead meatball, which is a Shanghainese dish and the boiled pork and chive dumplings. The ambience like your typical Chinese restaurant. The food is authentic and most of the clientele are Asian... we know where the good food is.

Update: I waited months for them to get their act together after opening to give them another try, but service is still a hot awful mess. Very poor communication between servers and very slow. Also one server was very forgetful. It's not worth posting new pictures from the latest meal. Just lunch specials that weren't special. I don't think I'll be back. There is too much delicious amazing food elsewhere with much better service.

Tried just one item on a first visit because I was craving noodles. I ordered the Shanghai-style thick fried noodle, and it was pretty good! It came with beef, chicken, shrimp. The noodles were of a good texture (not hard like egg noodle but not mushy or overly soft either). I would come back again and try more exciting dishes next time!

Happy to see this authentic customer in neighborhood! The food was amazing! The menu offer varieties of regional Chinese food so it's not boring at all. Along with it was the friendly and attentive server and classic ambiance. Keep up the good work!

First time trying this place, the place looks dated, I think it needs an update but the service was good. The food was really good but the air conditioner wasn't working so it wasn't very comfortable. We ordered: - Pork Belly with Meigan Cai 外婆家梅菜焖肉.- I really liked it. - Scallion Oil Noodles 葱油拌面.- Another solid dish. - Fried Squirrel-shaped Yellow Croaker w. Sweet and Sour Sauce 松鼠黄鱼.- my favorite, a must try dish you should order. I'll be back to try some other dishes but I'll make sure isn't a hot day unless they have fixed the air conditioner.

This is a new chinese restaurant in Rancho Bernardo located in a shopping mall. There is plenty of parking in the area, so there is no need to worry. We ordered a lot of food because it all sounded delicious. It definitely was pretty great. The crab ball soup was very unique. It was like a matzo ball soyp with a crab flavor! Delicious and creative. The smashed cucumbers were fresh, crisp, and tasty. The ribs were so tender the meat was falling off the bone. Salt & pepper shrimp was delicious on day one and the next day! I want you to know that I remembered to take pictures halfway into dinner. I apologize as there is more food than what is shown. I also want to compliment the very sweet lady that served us. She was amazing and was very helpful. We had a great time, thank you!

New opened place in RB. Food is a pretty good, the service get slow sometimes due to under staffed. But overall, it's a go to place in town.

A friend recommended this restaurant for our get together among others. She's more Chinese than I am and her mother appreciated their cooking so you know it must be good. Everything was tasty and made with love. They were grateful for our visit and courteous. Love the decor. Good for families, friends or a date. Dress casual. Biggest table accommodates six people, they have small booths of four, but mostly tables. Family style sharing is easy with the lazy Susans. Tea options: jasmine tea (caffeinated) and chrysanthemum tea (floral, no caffeine). Ice water available on request, sodas in cans (Sprite, Coke, other Coca-Cola products). The food came out with three dishes first then the other three came out later. We requested white rice, a separate charge, but the jasmine rice was a tremendous add to our gustatory joy. The walnut shrimp had an added crunch to it, Anna thought it was a tail, but they had prepared it to be crisp in parts. We also had the beef with snowpeas, Kung pao chicken (green pepper provides a slow burn), pan fried noodles with chicken, beef and shrimp; chicken chow mein, scallion and beef dumplings, and others.

I checked out Hometown Taste in Rancho Bernardo and was somewhat impressed. The restaurant is bright, clean and thoughtfully adorned with subdued Chinese décor, lanterns and whatnot. I found the service to be most pleasant and nice. Parking was surprisingly easy considering they share a lot with Jack in the Box and Carl's Jr. Wine glasses were clean and generously filled. Egg Drop Soup to start was tasty. Prices here are quite reasonable all things considered! I will be back for sure. I appreciate the option of fried rice with my lunch special dishes and was most delighted to see no extra charge for that. I asked about ordering a Fried Wonton Appetizer and the server stated that the lunch special comes with a spring roll. That's nice, but it's not what I asked. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken and it was decent, although not the best you'll find in about a 5 mile radius from here. I think the most off-putting thing for me was it not being spicy. The menu calls out "spicy" however when I got the itemized receipt at the end, it was marked "mild". I didn't know I had a choice! I wish they would have asked. I know at Thai restaurants they have their arbitrary numerical scales of spice they're always quizzing me on when I order. Sometimes it's 1-10, or 0-5, I can never keep track. I've never been asked about spice levels at a Chinese establishment. Either the dish is spicy or it's not. Anyway, the Kung Pao itself was good in that it did not contain any extra unnecessary fillers like water chestnuts, mushrooms, etc. However the wok sear was not as pronounced as I like. The mouthfeel was just a little too flaccid for me.

I went here on a weekday night for dinner and was easily able to be seated even though the restaurant was more than half full. The hostess/server was not that friendly here but I figured the food would be good given the service. I was really disappointed with the food. Everything was so greasy and bland. I ordered the chicken wings, wonton soup, beef and broccoli, dan dan noodles, and beef chow fun. I wouldn't order the same dishes again and I don't think I'd go back to try other things.

Pretty much the best Chinese food u have had since I moved to San Diego. The chicken fried rice had good flavor, the Orange chicken lightly breaded and sweet, and the pork and veggies was clean and fresh. The chilly wontons were very similar to Din Tai Fun so I was extremely happy to have found this place.

Hometown Taste is probably one of the better Asian restaurants in the area. We enjoyed all of our dishes and we got complimentary dessert at the end that we loved as well (which doesn't happen often). I think the only feedback we have is that the restaurant space is crowded. The chairs and tables feel crammed together. We came as a big family and there was another family already eating in there. It felt like we were taking up the whole place.

The food was good and fast. Ordered the spicy chicken, spicy fish, fried green beans and fried vegetables and appetizer pork ribs. The spicy chicken was a little too firm and needed a sauce. The appetizer was a little too firm as well. The spicy fish was good as well as the vegetables

I went with my son on a Sunday for lunch. The place was getting busy including a couple of large family groups. Despite how busy it was and only one woman I saw waiting tables for those dining in, service was very friendly. She initially spoke to us in Mandarin but when I responded in English, she spoke to us in English from then on. She also brought out forks immediately which I have stopped being offended by because my son needs one, and I appreciate the proactiveness. I ordered the beef chow fun, scallion oil noodles, pork and leek dumplings, seafood tofu hotpot, Jasmine tea, and water spinach. I found out later that they were out of water spinach. Food came out gradually which was actually good for us to pace ourselves. Everything was delicious. The noodles for the beef chow fun were a nice texture and not gummy nor stuck together, while the beef was tender and flavorful. The dumpling "skin" was not too thick nor too delicate- it was just right. Portion sizes were large which gave us plenty for leftovers, which the woman helped us to pack up. The pricing was pretty good too. My son appreciated the fortune cookies at the end of our meal. I look forward to returning!

Hometown Taste was excellent! If you're looking for authentic tasting Chinese food, I highly recommend giving HT a try. We were seated right away & the service was pretty fast. We ordered the sesame chicken and the sweet & sour chicken. Both came with soup, rice, and an egg roll on the side. For two dishes we spent under $30 (before tip) and it was well worth it. We'll definitely be back for more!

Walked in at 3pm on a Sunday and all the tables were full with happy people. A kind server came out and said "give me a minute", and proceeded to hustle and buss a table clean for us. Ordered potstickers and dumplings based on the outside menu pictures and they were both delicious! We were continuously delighted by our server who had a great tongue in cheek attitude. She said MooShu pancakes were Chinese burritos and Chinese don't eat them, only Americans. She prefer the Mexican Burritos. She was so funny and seemed to genuinely want us to enjoy our meal. She brought sauces and explained what dish they were for and constantly checked on us. She told us it would be plenty of food and it was. I was really surprised how many dumplings and Potstickers were served for the price! We enjoyed everything and had plenty to go. We will be back for more!

I was very disappointed going to hometown taste for a pick up today. I have been a customer of Hunan Restaurant for many many years and decided to try the new ownership. I went to pick up my order of duck salt and pepper, wings, and noodles it total almost $70. When I picked up my order I took six napkins and a young woman proceeded to quickly remove the napkins and take them to the back. The owner then came out and when I asked him for condiments and utensils, he handed me one condiment of each and gave me the third degree because I took napkins. He re continued berating in front of other customers insisting takeout orders did not come with napkins! The food might be good, but service is horrendous! I'm not going back again! You need to learn some manners in customer service!

Good Chinese restaurant in RB! Had stir fry frog with assorted veggie, braised chicken with edamame and water spinach, all delicious. Will be back to try more dishes here.

This unassuming restaurant was surprising good. They brought out two menus for us, one menu had more familiar American Chinese dishes like beef broccoli. The second menu had more ethically recognized dishes like steamed fish and scallion crab/lobster. We ordered from both menus and everything was equally good.

I would give them no stars at this point. Went for lunch. Ordered Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings as an appetizer and garlic chicken entree. If you want rice, it's extra $$. No free rice at this Chinese place. Entree came out 15 mins before they brought the appetizer. I sent it back since that was going to be my meal and my boyfriend was done eating before the wings arrived. I will never go back to this place again. Extremely poor experience.

Tried this place on Christmas Eve and I will come back again. Pleasant service and seated right away. Their food is delicious as well ordered dishes for 4 people with some leftovers. Soup dumplings i actually preferred here than Joyee because of their dough isn't thick and chewy. The eggplant stir fry, shrimp chowmien, scallion pancakes also delicious!

On our first visit, we had generous portions of beef noodle soup and chicken chow mein--both flavorful and satisfying. The setting had a welcoming, community feel, with many patrons and staff clearly familiar with one another. It reminded me of the family-run diners I used to enjoy back East. The space includes booths and tables, as well as three large round tables with oversized lazy Susans, perfect for groups of eight, though it looks like they could accommodate a few more seats if needed. I'm looking forward to coming back to try some of the beautifully presented dishes I saw being served at those large tables and to continue getting to know the friendly staff.

My husband and I have been here 3x times now since they've opened and so far, service and food have been great! We love that the dishes are flavorful without being overly salty or heavily seasoned. In our most recent visit, we tried an off-menu item - the fried tofu- and it was perfectly seasoned. We're so happy this restaurant opened up in RB since it was lacking in real authentic Chinese food options. We will definitely be coming back!

Such a cute place! The employees are all so attentive and very knowledgeable about the foods. Everything tastes super yummy, the scallion pancakes were so good (my favorite!) and the garlic eggplant was devoured! Have to come try it out

we went to visit my fave hunan resto, and this is the new hunan...food selections looks all good, we tried the usual chinese food, the soup and noodles portion are big, its all delicious but its pricey.

I had orange chicken and white rice today. The chicken was absolutely horrible. Couldn't taste the orange part couldn't taste the chicken and it was tough. Rice was decent though.

Very solid Chinese restaurant that serves up homey dishes that are generously portioned and not greasy. I've had 2 family dinners here so far and everyone enjoyed their meal. Favorites were the garlic prawns, seafood clay pot and cumin lamb. My dad was a chef/restaurant owner too and he's typically hard to impress, so it's a relief when I find a place that is both close to his house and meets his high standards!

Service was excellent! Momma Son was running circles. Food was delicious. We had Mopa Tofu, Black Pepper Beef, Calamari and Carmel Rice dessert.

What can I say? This place is fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! We had the seafood tofu hot pot (OMG, so good), garlic string green beans (better than DTF), fish filets in rice wine sauce (still salivating just thinking about it), and Braised Pork Belly With Meigan Cai (comes with steamed buns too!). Everything was fantastic. I can't wait to sample more of the menu. Service was warm and welcoming. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. It has a warm and friendly vibe - full with chatty people, but not loud so that you can't chat with your own table yourself. Definitely highly recommend.

Went here for weekend dinner, party of four. Understaffed; slow service. Takeout prioritized over dine-in. Don't go here hungry. Food quality was good, comparable to Joyee's Dumpling House. Note: there are two menus. Generally quiet atmosphere.

I've only had their takeout and it has been great. Since we've had our share of bad Chinese food--gooey sauces, tasteless won ton soup, greasy stir fries filled with water chestnuts, and thickly coated, fried chicken chunks as sweet as candy--Hometown Taste is a breath of fresh air. Their menu is a mix of traditional American-style Chinese food, which they execute very well, indeed, and truly authentic dishes (although, I don't plan on ordering the Chef's Signature Jellyfish Head). I know the latter is good judging by the number of Asian diners (everyone) inside the restaurant every time I pick up my order. But they do an excellent job with our traditional favorites--and more. We've gone three times and some of our favorite dishes have been Shredded Pork With Smoked Bean Curd, the Assorted Won Ton Soup (which is a tasty meal in itself), Garlic Stringbeans, Stir-fried Water Spinach, and Pan-fried Dumplings. I could go on, Hometown Taste leaves places like Chin's and Chopsticks (which used to be our go-to, in the dust.) Highly recommended!

Visited for lunch on a weekday and it was packed with Asian customers which we took as a good sign. The menu is nicely done with photos of everything. Very tasty high quality and well prepared authentic Shanghai and similar cities cuisine. Dishes may not appeal to the American tasebud if it was raised on Panda Express and such, but this is authentic as you would find if you went to China. Family run place with a few helpers who work hard to keep things moving and everyone happy, but, yes, a little patience is required and appreciated at peak times. One of the best in San Diego for this type of cuisine.

We were really in the mood for some wonton soup. We decided to try this new restaurant. I never liked the old restaurant Hunan that used to be in this location. In addition to ordering wor wonton soup, we ordered moo shu pork and chicken chow mein. Food came quickly, but I didn't feel like any of it came really hot. I like my food steaming hot or with Chinese food, I like it hot right out of the wok. There is a name for that, but I can't remember what it is right now. Anyway, not thrilled with the soup. The broth was too bland. Just had 3 shrimp, some chicken breast, but no BBQ pork? There were veggies and wontons, of course. Just very bland. The moo shu pork was good, but also just a little too bland and I don't remember there being too much pork. And it was served already rolled up in the wrapper, which I didn't like. It felt like the portion was a bit skimpy. The chicken chow mein was also good, not great. I loved that it had nice slices of chicken breast, not dark and white meat. Everything was good, just not delicious. Service was friendly. I might try it again. They seem to have good lunch specials.
