The Best Coffee Shops & Cafes In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This fantastic cafe in Pilsen seems like it was made specifically for the work-anywhere-but-the-office set. Not only does La Malinche serve great coffee and tasty sandwiches, crepes, and breakfast dishes like chilaquiles, it’s also fully equipped with wifi, plenty of outlets, and even a printer. It’s the kind of relaxed space where you can come to work alone, or with a small group while downing delicious café de olla out of terracotta mugs. La Malinche closes pretty late for a coffee shop, 6pm during the week and 5pm on the weekends, so don’t come here if you need an excuse to close your laptop at 2:30pm." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

Google
The drinks were good, your basic café fare. The food was the most disappointing, not very memorable but definitely will do the job if you're looking for a quick bite. I had a muffin and the cassanova crepe, along with the iced Matcha latte. Crepes are made in house, bakery goods are not. The stars of this local café are the atmosphere, staff, and other patrons. It's a beautiful local spot with charming empolyees, and chill customers. Have a coffee or tea, bring your laptop, or current project you are working on... relax and be productive you will fwel welcomed and at ease. This is the place for it.

Google
Passed by after work meeting for quick bite and gotta say, I was amazed. Great art and environment, friendly staff and although I only bought a yogurt cup and croissant, the croissant was perfectly crispy/light and yogurt cup great flavors, add almonds they won’t be shy with it! Will come back next time I’m in the area.

La Malinche Coffee & Tea House is more than just a coffee shop—it’s a place where connections are built and love stories unfold. I recently visited with a couple for a photo session, and I can absolutely see why this place holds significance in their relationship. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, with stunning murals, cozy seating, and a warm, artistic ambiance that makes you want to stay for hours. The cultural elements woven into the decor add so much personality to the space. It feels like a love letter to tradition, art, and good company. And let’s talk about the coffee—it hits! ☕🔥 Smooth, rich, and perfectly brewed, every sip was an experience in itself. Whether you’re here for a quick caffeine fix or to soak in the energy of the space, this spot delivers. If you’re looking for a place to create memories, enjoy great coffee, and experience a unique atmosphere, La Malinche is a must-visit. Can’t wait to come back!

Hector is a very special & hard to find barista person! He treated me with kindness, happiness & with a sincere / lovely customer service! ¡Gracias! Today I am enjoying a black coffee with pan de muerto. Stop by this Day of the Death season at Malinche Coffee Place, you will have a delish time there for sure! I will definitely come back!

Google
This is a cute coffee shop with a welcoming atmosphere. The açaí bowl was fresh and flavorful, and the drinks were good!

Google
Such an incredibly wonderful place with the friendliest staff. This is the real deal - so unique and everything was fantastic. The abuelita was so tasty and not to sweet and the cafe de olla was authentic and spot on! Such thoughtful menu, decor and cups added to the fantastic atmosphere. The artisanal fruit teas all looked good though I tried the passion fruit - the smell is beyond divine with floating dehydrated fruit that plumps back up in hot water then after rehydrating and making the tea, you eat the dried fruit. So different and wonderful. This is worth a visit - so many people in there with their computers collaborating and working together. It was pretty quiet and the murals on the walls were beautiful.

Google
Great little place good food good coffee good atmosphere all good qualities from a mom-and-pop store that's not a corporate entity will come back frequently for coughing and for some of the food

Gurleen K.

Google
An affordable and cute cafe in Pilsen! I got the cafe de olla and it was so good! It was the perfect amount of sweet to complement the spice and I’ll definitely be back to try the herbals teas! There is such a unique and cute atmosphere for anyone to come hangout and the service was really friendly. The prices were also really reasonable so I’d definitely recommend.

Yelp
La Malinche Coffee & Tea House is a cozy spot with plenty of seating options--I especially liked the setup near the front door, which made for a comfortable place to sit and enjoy my drink. Service was quick and efficient, and while it wasn't too crowded during my visit, the energy in the space still felt lively. The music was a bit louder than I'd prefer for a study session, but it added some character to the atmosphere. My coffee came out nice and hot, just the way I like it, and the sandwiches looked excellent--the presentation alone made them tempting. I'll be back to try one on my next visit.

Yelp
I decided to try something new today... I'm a big fan of Cafe de Olle, and I saw they had this on their menu, so I decided to stop in. The place is super cute and colorful. Although it's tiny, they have some good seating options. I love finding a comfortable table near a window so I can people watch and if it's raining, that's a bonus! They had upbeat music playing.. a little too loud for my taste. And the coffee shop was full, which is always a good sign! You order your food and drink at the counter and you are given a number and allowed to seat yourself. When your order is ready they bring it to your table. I noticed that people sitting next to me were drinking coffee out of very ornate coffee mugs and those are the small details that I really love about coffee shops. However, when I received my coffee, it was in a to-go cup even though they knew I was dining in. I noticed that when they brought coffee out to another group, they were in the coffee mugs as well. Not sure what that was about, but I was disappointed that I didn't get the aesthetically pleasing coffee mug. I was disappointed with the Cafe de Olle. I understand that people make them differently, but it was very cinnamon forward, which is not my preference. I also ordered the Chillequilles. Very disappointing. I also know that this is made many different ways. Initially I said I didn't want egg and avocado which were an additional cost but when I got it it was literally tortilla chips sauce and cheese. There were also a few slices of red onion. I ended up going back to the counter and ordering some avocado to add to it, but very disappointed. If I go back to this place, it will only be for the cozy seating if I'm able to snag one of the window seats. I may even order a coffee but keep it simple. A little disappointing.

Yelp
Sara is a delightful host who cheerfully explained the menu's many offerings. The bagels were fresh, cheese danishes tasty, & Cafe de Olle (Olla?) beyond compare! I highly recommend La Malinche for its warm environment, delish foods, reasonable prices, and tasty coffees. It is a refreshing change from cookie-cutter coffee shops and corporate environments. It is easy to reach on CTA #8 and there is a Divvy stand directly in front. Thank you, La Malinche! :-) Sincerely, Patrick Shaughnessy Chicago, IL

Yelp
This is a great spot to work or study while enjoying coffee and food. I noticed they have a printer available, which is super convenient--especially when you need to print something out real quick. The decor inside is really cool and creates a nice atmosphere. I ordered the cajeta latte and it was great! I'll definitely be coming back to try the food sometime.

Yelp
Super cute cafe in pilsen! beautiful mural outside, lots of lovely colorful decor inside. The staff were really friendly and helpful as well. Ordered the cafe de olla and the green chilaquiles. Everything was great. The food was good but what really impressed me the most was the ambiance and vibe. Definitely would come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for brunch with coworkers and we loved the food! Also in love with how vibrant the interior was. Especially the art on the walls! Service was friendly and my friends loved the Turkey Pesto panini so much that they ordered two more to go!
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
I had a breakfast bagel and iced vanilla latte and it was delicious! The place itself is so cute and aesthetic. The service was good; took a little long to take our order and to get our food but there were only two people working at that time so it was understandable.

Tegan B.

Yelp
Horchata Latte !!!! AMAZING Even just a bagel with cream cheese, the way they toasted it, amazing.
google avatar

chris h.

Yelp
Great family owned establishment. Cool decor, warm service, wonderfully unique menu with high quality handmade offerings. Bfast bagel and latte were the bomb and can't wait to come back for the turkey panini and horchata-matcha.

Brendan C.

Yelp
Took 30 minutes for chilaquiles (chips, salsa verde, and eggs) during off-peak business hours. Chilaquiles was mid and definitely overpriced. The coffee cups and decor was cute but wouldn't necessarily come back for the coffee/food.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
First time here everything was good!! Staff was friendly. Food didn't take long to come out. You necessarily don't need reservations when we came it wasn't busy. It's a decent cute little place definitely will be back.
google avatar

Luke W.

Yelp
Oh wow! What a sweet spot for the matrimony of Italian and Mexican with Chicago officiating, this little wedding I witnessed sipping on their horchatta latte got me all happily ever after. Was able to use my own container too, wonder if they'll add a little discount to save us both? My other Mexican coffee attempts haven't gone well, one in Hayward, California, turns out the extra authentic Hispanic java juice isn't for me. But this place gets the goods good; well balanced sweet horchatta against the bitter roll of espresso. Couldn't help myself and fighting trashy traffic the brown disappeared quickly, bummer I couldn't stay in this delightful bright and inviting space. Awesome crowd behind the counter too, this is one special city drip dive.

Sandy E.

Yelp
The vibe is always the same! Positive & kind! The dirty abuelita is my fave! Only tiny area for improvement is shades for the window. Love to work here but can't see my laptop
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
Such sweet customer service! Poinsettias inside for the holidays! This place is so cute! We are visiting from Cali and found this gem! Yummy matcha lattes and big fluffy muffins!
google avatar

Bianca C.

Yelp
Delicious food and I always love supporting Latino Owned businesses! 10/10 recommend and would definitely come again :)

Yelp
A festive, neighborhood coffee shop. The horchata latte was really potent in the horchata flavor. I would highly recommend! The creamy and spicy in the horchata was not lost in the coffee drink. The service was superb. Very friendly. They took time and care to prepare the drinks and are meticulous in making sure you're taken care of. We ordered three drinks - two were for friends and the gentleman cut up a four drink cup holder to hold the two drinks. Ambiance was colorful and festive whilst clean.

Yelp
I love discovering new coffee shops and La Malinche in Pilsen did not disappoint. I found out about it through TikTok and ventured out from the suburbs a few days later. The inside is quite cozy and has a good amount of seating. I personally loved the deep pink and navy blue walls, as well as the gold fireplace. The people working at the counter were very friendly and helpful. I ordered a large iced matcha green tea latte and it surpassed my expectations. It had the perfect balance of matcha to sweetener. I found myself enjoying it even more after every sip. I also appreciated that they have non dairy alternatives so that I was able to have my drink made with oat milk. La Malinche is a hidden gem in the Pilsen neighborhood. I can definitely see myself ordering a drink and getting some work done there. Their food items looked quite tasty as well. I will definitely need to try them out next time!
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
Every time I visit Chicago I like checking out places in Pilsen. This time I went for breakfast to Malinche. I ordered a small iced matcha and a bagel with cream cheese. It was Friday morning around 10, place wasn't that busy and it took 15 minutes to get my drink and my bagel with cream cheese came about 10 minutes after my drink. I had to stop myself from sipping so I would be able to enjoy my matcha with the bagel. I thankfully had enough time to wait, so I still enjoyed my breakfast. I paid $12 for the bagel with cream cheese and small iced matcha. Place is nice, art is colorful and lots of street parking.

Yelp
My friend and I wanted to go somewhere we haven't before and found out about this place thru Yelp. The cafe is so cute. There's music playing and the seating is pretty spread out and not at all uncomfortable. There were people studying and people chatting. I think my friend and I were very loud (I'm so sorry) but we were really comfortable there. The tables were clean and the bathroom was clean, too. I like that they had signs on the booths that they were for 3+ parties so that the seating isn't hogged by one person. The decor is wonderful as well. Service was amazing! The woman who took my order was so nice and patient as my friend and I were scouring the menu trying to figure out what we wanted. The food and drink we got were delicious. Looking forward to coming back to try other things on the menu.

Yelp
I don't know what's the hype about this place... Decor: 3.5 stars, unique style and welcoming Food: 2 stars, mediocre. cuban sandwich is sad, only tasted mustard. Crepes, just no, it's chewy. Drink: 3 stars matcha latte it so sweet, only tasted syrup Latte: too much milk tasted watered down Service: 2 stars You don't get any. You get a number and they bring you food. I didn't see them clean the table.

Nova G.

Yelp
Great coffee and great food. Staff was kind and establishment was clean and welcoming to sit and get some work done. I had a Dirty Abuelita with oat milk and the Turkey Pesto both were excellent. Will be returning in future!
google avatar

Buddha N.

Yelp
Flew into Chicago on a early mor ing flight and first stop to warm up was La Malinche Coffee & Tea House.... Cute shop and great vibes and even better eats and morning drinks .. Decided on the following items. Green Chilaquiles with fried eggs basically delicious breakfast nachos .. so damn yummy ... fried eggs, fried tortilla chips, tomatillo green salsa, sour cream, cotija cheese and onions. Dirty Abuelita is your mexican chocolate Abuelita with espresso shots. So rich and warm and reminds you of Abuelita making hot chocolate over the stove in a pot Guava punch artisan Fruit Tea is a blend of dehydrated fruits, flowers and tea so refreshing Definitely stop by this cute place and enjoy some good coffee and breakfast.
google avatar

Sendhil R.

Yelp
Great drinks and food (including plant milk options and a few vegetarian dishes), friendly service, and a happy and vibrant atmosphere. Fun place to meet friends and also good for business coffee chats. Some folks do camp out with laptops solo but it's often a bit full for that.
google avatar

Valery P.

Yelp
I visited La Malinche in December and I can only say one thing- I am definitely planning my next trip to go here! I tasted their chai latte and cubano sandwich- it was so delicious and the ambiance there was amazing! I absolutely loved the vibes in that place; usually, a lot of coffee shops feel fast-paced, but this place was super calm. For what it's worth, I was also there at a not-so busy time, so I wouldn't mind if I had to wait again when it is!
google avatar

Windy H.

Yelp
This was my second time here, so I think it's safe to say it's time for me to review this place. Both times, I got myself a green tea latte. It's so good. It's not too sweet, so I kinda like it. The place itself is tiny but packed with cuteness. The place is cozy. I brought my computer with me and was able to work from this place. The owner is so nice and always helpful. Overall, this place is amazing, and they need all the buzz.
google avatar

Manuel G.

Yelp
Have you been here yet? Why not? You're missing out! I really enjoy getting the same drink here, the dirty abuelita, either hot or iced. It has a great flavor and texture, which cannot be compared to any other type of hot chocolate or coffee or mocha. The service is good and the atmosphere is so colorful! I really love the artwork and the mural outside.
google avatar

Araceli C.

Yelp
I stop in For hot tea , sweet crepe and hot chocolate abuelita to go Nice, cozy place colorfull Cafe in pilsen It looks like family own business I ordered cinnamon tea, and guava was a huge mug. It was pretty good Then crepe dulce de leche, bananas and pecans never see pecans the batter was bland and tick, Friendly staff
google avatar

Cynthia P.

Yelp
Cute cafe. The kind of place where you can slowly sip away at a cup of coffee or study. They even have a printer. Good selection of coffee / non-coffee drinks and some food options including acai bowls and sandwiches. Staff was friendly.

Ava Young Y.

Yelp
Great Coffee, like seriously good coffee. Noise level okay as is mostly just people working. But don't come on Sunday morning, not actually open at 8AM.
google avatar

Jennifer Á.

Yelp
I really loved this place. I had the cajeta latte and it was delish, not overly sweet. My mom had the passion mix fruit tea and you could taste so many flavors. Foood was also really yummy and such a good vibe in there. Try this place out! You won't regret it. I'll be back to try more coffee things!
google avatar

Reyna R.

Yelp
Went here on a Sunday morning. Parking was a little difficult to find but the inside was not full. It was very colorful inside. It did take a while for us to get our drinks and food. We got Malinche crepes, a breakfast bagel, and the El Chavo panini. They were all delicious! Not sure I would recommend their pastries because they look like they were not made freshly in-store. We got a cafe de olla and a Mazapan latte. The latte was full of flavor.
google avatar

Reonna T.

Yelp
Had the Ube Horchata with a shot of espresso. It had good flavors but the texture of the ube was not my favorite. However the cookies and cream cupcake was really good and they warmed it up for me. The service was really good and I can see why this coffee shop was packed on a cold rainy Chicago day
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
Another great experience. We stopped in for lattes, but my husband tried the red chilaquiles with eggs and avocado. Everyone is so welcoming, respectful and kind. The food and lattes are amazing and served with pride. Of course, I love the cups and plates, so authentic. Definitely will return again and again.
google avatar

Gwendolyn L.

Yelp
Decor was nice, it was counter service like normal cafes. We came for breakfast and my party ordered: GREEN CHILAQUILES WITH EGGS (Fried tortilla chips, green tomatillo sauce, sour cream, fresco cheese, onions.) For drinks we ordered: HORCHATA Latte, CAFE DE OLLA (Cinnamon, anise & piloncillo), CUBANITO The food and drinks were great, the chill coffee shop vibes made the experience enjoyable. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Maralyn O.

Yelp
Cutest little coffee/sandwich shop... with an upright piano to play! So cozy and the pastries were excellent... we stopped off for coffee ( served in the cutest mugs). Owner and wife were so friendly and told us the story behind the name, La Malinche! Will definitely return as I love supporting small business owners and this owner was a DACA recipient!!

Pilar M.

Yelp
Recomendado está muy deliciosa la comida y el café todo se ve muy delicioso y el lugar muy hermoso 10/10

Yelp
Loved the decor, amazing coffee, and friendly service! The food smelled delicious, we'll be back to try the food next time :)
google avatar

Angelina I.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday afternoon and it was very busy inside. I ordered months's specialty latte, "don't break my mazapan" and it was delicious and very cute with the pink cold foam and mazapan pieces on top. Would love to try more of their coffee and food options! They have pozole on the weekend.
google avatar

Serg D.

Yelp
Malinche feels like home away from home! This spot has yummy drinks - I recommend the café de olla (hot or iced), the horchata lattes, the dirty abuelita (Mexican hot chocolate with a shot of espresso), and the tisanes (herbal and fruit infusions, similar to herbal tea). Hector and Yvette, the owners, make sure that service is consistently kind and attentive. The cozy atmosphere, good music, and reliable wifi make this the perfect place to work remotely! And the fact that this spot is named after a Nahua (Indigenous) historical figure, which is also the name of a volcano I lived by growing up, makes this spot extra special!
google avatar

Ariel S.

Yelp
This had been in my saved list and I'm so glad I was able to come! Free street parking right outside. Inside was warm, cozy, and colorful. It was busy when we arrived but had cleared out by the time we left. Wide variety of drink options, available both iced and hot. The crepes and paninis were good too.

Daira H.

Yelp
Had the chillaquiles and cafe de olla and definitely made me feel at home. Love the music and environment.
google avatar

El K.

Yelp
Great little cafe with some outdoor seating. Customer service was phenomenal. They were happy I was there. I had me a cold fruit tea. It was delicious. My friend had a black coffee and had no complaints. It was good. We didn't eat but the food looked really good too.
google avatar

Karell B.

Yelp
I passed by this coffee shop with my bf and it looked so cute I just had to go in a couple weeks later. I'm so glad I decided to stop in because the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The menu is very diverse - Next time I'll have to try out a panini because they look so good. I tried the chai tea and the red velvet cupcake. Honestly, I love love love their mugs! Such a great vibrant touch to my drink! The red velvet was great too! Great size and moist -not like most other red velvet cupcakes that are typically dry. This one was perfect. Definitely will come back again.

Yelp
This cute new little Pilsen cafe off Halsted is owned by a local Latina woman who recently made news because she was diagnosed with brain cancer just weeks after opening this place. There is a gofundme, and her younger brother and husband are helping run this new family-owned place--which is sorta amazing and inspiring. Two tables in the front window bays provide great study or meetup spots and as things open up I assume they'll be able to put down more indoor seating. I like the bright pink wall vibe with gold fireplace and fresh flowers. The La Malinche name--I don't speak Spanish so I had to ask friends. It sometimes means "traitor" because the name refers to the Aztec woman who translated for Cortez--the imperial conquerer of the Aztecs. But she was also a slave and a victim--so it's all complex, and I'd really like to learn more from the owner what the name means to her. Hot drip coffee could use to be a little stronger, but things are new here so I'm sure it's getting worked out. Lattes and standard espresso menu is available. Panini pressed sandwiches were good. So was the almond croissant, which they offered to warm for me. Wifi works and there are a few plugs available.
google avatar

Jisha J.

Yelp
Such a cute little coffee house in Pilsen. I got an iced cajeta latte and it was delicious! The baked items all looked good, but I just wanted some coffee. Will definitely stop by again! The menu said they have crepes, I will definitely try them next time.
google avatar

Jordyn B.

Yelp
I love this cafe, the staff is incredibly friendly and the food is great! They have one of the best matchas I've ever had. Can get busy during the weekends and seating fills up fast!
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Grateful for this coffee shop, I love the aesthetic and art all around; the vibes are great. We came in for the second time and I asked for an iced latte with almond milk and my boyfriend ordered a hot black coffee. The cashier rang us in 1 coffee and 1 latte but gave us 2 coffees. We always tip 20% because we work in the industry, Unfortunately, he made me pay for another latte, but when I realized we were now double charged, i asked for the money back and he seemed a bit frustrated he had to reimburse me. We're just looking for a local coffee spot to hang out at and enjoy coffee while supporting a family business but this was a bit of a turn off.
google avatar

Rhonda F.

Yelp
You must come here!! After a day in Pilsen, we stopped for an afternoon coffee and treat. I found the place on Yelp and feel so lucky to have stopped in. Located on S Halstead, this cute storefront spot offers so much. Big windows allow the sunlight in. Vintage hardwood floors, colorful walls and high ceilings create a cozy cafe that feels so welcoming. The vintage stove, stand up piano and unique seating areas are perfection. We ordered lattes and a dried fruit tea. We added a croissant, carrot cake and coffee cake. Everything was delicious. I especially loved my Cajeta Latte that was reminiscent of Dulce de Leche but different. The owners and their beautiful baby were there and could not have been more kind. They were gracious and lovely, which made us feel so good. I cannot wait to return for breakfast. The menu looks fantastic!! Easy street parking is available.
google avatar

Yelp
First time I came it was barely post covid. This second visit is so much better! More vibe more life. I tried the caramel latte...sooooooo good! The service is always the best! Haven't left and I can't wait to come back again!
