Focaccia pizza squares with clam & garlic, pepperoni, combo

"In the glow of the neon sign, the longtime Sicilian slice spot still draws lines 47 years after opening, and for good reason. A line stretched away from the ordering window but moved quickly, and at the front you can order by the slice or the whole pizza; the combination slice with peppers, olives, sausage, and pepperoni, as well as the pesto slice, caught my eye. While Sicilian-style slices can be a bit dense sometimes, what I got here was akin to a crispy cloud — the outside dark brown with blackened bits, the interior made up of appropriately pale bubbles of gluten — and an hour later, after a Chinese mai tai at Li Po down the street, the leftovers were even better." - Paolo Bicchieri
"Like never bothering to cross the bay to Alcatraz, standing in line for Golden Boy is a local rite of passage. As is ordering one of their fluffy Sicilian focaccia squares with a crispy bottom. This North Beach institution (est. 1978) with its iconic red neon finger sign makes some of the thickest and cheapest slices in town, starting at $3.50. There are also only six kinds on the menu, but we zero in on the pepperoni or the meaty combo with sausage. Inside, punk music blares, the walls are covered with stickers, plenty of beers flow from the tap. But for now, hop in the line and keep it moving. Golden Boy is temporarily takeout-only." - julia chen 1, lani conway
"Next time you find a $10 bill in an old pair of jeans and want to spend it on something other than one-and-a-half iced lattes, order a couple of slices from Golden Boy Pizza. The North Beach pizza standby has excellent, Sicilian-style square slices with a focaccia crust and tons of gooey cheese, plus toppings like pepperoni, sausage, or clam and garlic sauce. At $4-ish a slice, it’s one of the best deals in the area." - julia chen 1, lani conway, patrick wong
