3 Best Day Trips From Denver | Condé Nast Traveler

"It’s worth the trek to the northeast side of town to sample Avery’s beers; for decades now, the brewery has been pumping out award-winning suds. A recently built $27 million facility offers a boisterous tap room with big windows, a patio, and a row of 30-something taps that keep the nectar flowing. Upstairs is the brewery’s restaurant, complete with tall ceilings, concrete floors, and even more people that pack it on weekends and after work. From a refreshing Belgian-style white ale to IPAs that really pack a punch, Avery just can’t seem to make a bad brew. Perennial favorites like Ellie’s Brown ale and the Maharaja IPA are made year-round, but be sure to sample the seasonal selection for innovative takes on sours, lagers, high-alcohol brews, and barrel-aged beers." - Megan Barber

Boulder’s pioneering independent brewery pairs its celebrated beers with a strong burger slate—cheeseburger, mushroom‑Swiss, BLTA, and a black‑bean option. It’s a favorite off‑the‑path stop where the kitchen keeps pace with the taps.

Google
Great beer, friendly staff and a comfortable outdoor atmosphere to drink beer with friends. They have a huge selection of on draft beer and are kind enough to let you taste before you buy. We didn’t have any food but it looked great. I’d go back with friends or family, it’s a spacious, great brewery.

Google
Stopped by for lunch after doing the Celestial Seasonings tour and the food and service were excellent. I’d never had brisket and wow I am a fan now. We all loved our food and were stuffed when we left.

Shannon S.

Google
Loved the outdoor patio! The food was wonderful, especially the fennel slaw and the blackened salmon blt. The self guided brewery tour was a nice sneak peak of their process. Love that they’re dog and cyclist friendly. Close to Boulder. Huge selection of awesome beers brewed on site.

Sabrina F.

Google
My husband and I had a great time on our tour of Avery Brewing! Gabe was a fantastic guide and provided thoughtful information about the brewing process and what sets Avery apart from the rest. We enjoyed trying all the tastings and discussing the flavor profiles of each type of beer. We'd highly recommend this brewery tour to anyone visiting the Boulder area!

Jeremy Y.

Google
Avery was an awesome brewery stop on our way up to Fort Collins. There was plenty of parking and the space itself is quite large with indoor and outdoor seating. There's a full food menu and tons of beer options on tap. All of the beers we tried were fresh and tasty, and the chips we got were nice. I'd appreciate the instructions to be a little clearer when walking in (see the host stand vs head straight to a table etc) but otherwise no complaints. Nice spot!

Corine G.

Google
Had the absolute best time here! Service was fantastic and the food was so good! We tried 6 different brews and all of them were great. Even had $5 pints since it was Tuesday which was a nice little surprise. We will 100% be back to visit our next time through Colorado

Google
I’ve been a loyal customer of Avery Brewing for years, but my recent visit with my family, including my newborn baby, left me deeply disappointed. During our meal, I went to change my baby in the women’s restroom and found the only changing table in unacceptable condition: it was covered in used wipes, a used diaper, paper towels, and was next to a bucket of cleaning chemicals. Given the state of the facility, I made the decision to change my baby discretely on the ground, on a sanitary pad, near our patio table and behind our stroller. While doing this, the on-duty manager approached and told me I was not allowed to change my newborn baby there. I approached her again after I had finished the task and explained that I had checked the restroom first and even showed her a photo of the unsanitary conditions. She told me she didn’t care and that it was the rule, no diaper changes outside, apparently no matter the condition of the provided facilities. She also suggested my husband try the men’s room instead, which felt dismissive and unhelpful. What was most upsetting wasn’t just the lack of a clean space to care for my child, but the complete lack of understanding or empathy from the manager. Her attitude completely undercut the excellent service we had received from our waiter. He earned the redemptive second star in this review. As a parent and longtime customer, I expect better. We won’t be returning, and I hope Avery takes this feedback seriously, maintains cleaner facilities, and trains staff to support families with small children in a more respectful and reasonable way.

Google
Dang. Solid, solid wings. Garlic fries were insane with the mayo/honey mustard sauce option. Very dog friendly and super easy to order!!

Yelp
Simeon was so sweet and helpful. Great knowledge of the beer and great recommendations as well. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
Me and The Hubs were in the area on a Saturday to go to the nearby car museum with some of his car club members and we came here for lunch afterward. I'm not really a 'beer person' but was wowed not by the one beer that I had, but by the food. I had the fish and chips. While 'not the best fried fish I've ever had', it was very good. What wowed me was The Hub's lunch. He ordered the Brisket Plate (9 oz of smoked brisket, beer mustard bbq, fennel slaw, green chili mac n cheese, green chili cornbread). I tasted the brisket and it was excellent! I was so surprised by how good it was. I was also surprised by how much brisket was on the plate. It might have been 9oz, but this serving looked like more. He couldn't eat it all and we brought the rest home (yay for me!). I love their fennel slaw. It also came with the fish& chips. Yum! This place is too far from home to come on any regular basis, but next time I'm in the area I'll definitely come back. PS - Our server was super nice!

Elaine P.

Yelp
Great service! Great beer! And the food was pretty great as well. Nice variety on the menu. The green chili stew is where it's at, quite good. My dining partners enjoyed their meals as well. Our server was fantastic and timing for food, drinks and checking on us, was perfect.
google avatar

Yelen P.

Yelp
I'm surprised by how much I, as someone who doesn't drink much alcohol, enjoy this place. Everything from the food (brisket nachos are a staple) and the non-alcohol drink options to the free EV charging and laidback ambiance. The employees are energetic and friendly. They're doing something right here !
google avatar

Yelp
Highly recommend the Brewery Tour! Offered daily at 430pm. We had an excellent tour guide, Fish. We had several beer tastings during the tour and learned a lot about the brewing process including yeast production (Avery produces their own yeast). We also got to see the Barrel room and learn about barrel aging. We had a taste of barrel aged and also a tasting straight from a barrel that was oxidized. Then we moved on to food and more tastings for dinner. We tasted a few beers that we didn't taste on the tour including their new product, hard tea. We enjoyed and shared. For food we had the Pretzel (this family never passed on a pretzle!), Brisket Plate,.Fish & Chips, and Ceasar Salad. Brisket was so tender! Ceasar reminded us of the one I make back.home, high compliment! You order and pay thru an app. Server brings the food out and checks in with you. Beers are ordered at the Bar. Great experience and we plan to return during our visit! We also bought beer to go and enjoy at the hotel!

Yelp
Great beers, friendly and wonderful people work here, great beer garden and outside patio, along with inside and upstairs. Ben is the BEST! Love this place!!
google avatar

Sean G.

Yelp
One of the best breweries in all of Colorado. I have been drinking their barrel aged beers for years. Unfortunately I heard they are stopping barrel aged bottles. I hope this is untrue. All of their beer is amazing, I haven't had a single one that I don't like. Their IPA's and barrel aged ones are my favorite but I'm not allowed to try any.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
This is the first brewery I ever fell in love with. If you're in Boulder, Colorado, and you love beer absolutely do not skip out on this place.
google avatar

Avery H.

Yelp
Always a winner. The seating/serving has shifted around a bit, and it's still just as great. Always friendly staff, good bites, and super solid beers. This go around, I went for a cellared beer. Didn't disappoint!
google avatar

John B. L.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my Fried Chicken Sammy with Garlic Fries. My server Zach was helpful, as I navigated the list of brews. I went with the IPA Flight for tasting, and finished with a Samaels barrel-aged, which was phenomenal.
google avatar

Kimberli R.

Yelp
Great spot! There is indoor and outdoor seating. Beer was delicious. Our server was awesome. He let my husband try a couple of samples before he made a decision. I had a vanilla stout. We also ordered BBQ nachos and chips with salsa, guacamole, and queso. Dog friendly on the patio. Parking in a lot. Bathrooms were clean. Handicap accessible. Vibe is fun.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed a few beers and some eats sitting outside. Loved the beer and the Buddha Bowl. Also ordered garlic fries which I felt were undercooked and really not enough garlic. Great service and we enjoyed the live music too!
google avatar

Joey W.

Yelp
Came in for an early dinner and the place was pretty busy! Island Rascal 16oz for $7. Fried Chicken Sammy ($19) - the sandwich buns were a little soggy so I wish they toasted it. The fried chicken was seasoned well. Unfortunately, the garlic fries lacked garlic so it tasted like normal fries.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent brewery that I was able to check out on a reach trip to Boulder. I really enjoyed everything about this brewery. Food was good, beers were great, service was excellent. This brewery is nesselled in a little corporate office park. Lots of parking and tons of outside seating. Since it was raining we opted to sit inside. They have different food menus depending on the day that you are there. We just got a light snack of chips and dip. The salsa was so flavorful and smokey! The cheese and guac were the perfect addition. Now onto the beers. We got a flight - which you can customize. Each beer is priced accordingly. My tops were the White Rascal and the Avery IPA. I was googling if I could get any of these back home while I was in the restaurant cause I liked them so much. Electric sunshine, a sour beer, was also very good. Not sure if I ever will be back but I will tell everyone that they need to stop by! Great place :)
google avatar

Em T.

Yelp
Good food, great beer, fast and friendly service. The location seems new and is modern. We were there on a Tuesday so no fish and chips. I guess that's a weekend mention. So keep that in mind! We had the green chile, brisket plate, Caesar salad which had added bbq smoked turkey, chicken sandwich. Everyone was happy with their meal. Bathrooms were clean and tidy. We would go back!
google avatar

Arjun V.

Yelp
Those who know, know. Some of the best locally made beer in Colorado. They have a huge space for dining and enjoying drinks outside. Heads up this place gets busy on the weekends, expect a wait However, their food was frankly lacking and not very memorable. Rating 4 stars bc the atmosphere is nice and their beer is great. I'd still return here for a beer and some grub after say a hike in Boulder, but wouldn't come just for the food. They have free tours of some of the brewery I believe, didn't get a chance to try it this time
google avatar

Yelsha R.

Yelp
The $10 brewery tour is definitely worth it! You get 4 large beer tastings and refills plus a one hour behind the scenes tour that is very informative. It was great to meet other people on the tour. Gabe and his trainer did an excellent job and are very kind and informative. They had a medical emergency with a patron during the tour which was handled with care. Don't lock your knees while standing on the tour and remember to drink water because you are at a higher altitude and alcohol will have a greater effect. However their is a fire department conveniently located across the street. Thank you Avery! Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
First time to come by to check out the place and try out some beers. We weren't eating, so we ate in the bar area downstairs rather than the restaurant area upstairs. I couldn't decide, so I tried small pours of most of the dark beers. I'd probably rank them as... 1. Tweak 2. Old Jubilation 3. Ellie's Brown Ale 4. The Reverend 5. Latte on My Mind My wife liked the Latte the best and enjoyed a pint of that one. This place is large and impressive. It doesn't have the small brewery feel of other places we frequent, and it's not particularly convenient for us. Maybe we'll stop in again the last time we're in the neighborhood. There is a small, dog-friendly outdoor area, so that's an option as well.

Yelp
Avery Brewing is one of the most famous breweries in Colorado, doing it for over 30 years. The Boulder taproom is nothing short of impressive. It's a little off the beaten path, but you'll find yourself staying for a long time. Long before I moved to Colorado, I would sample big burly rare Avery beers at the bottle shop and breweries I worked at. I first visited this location in 2019 and was blown away by the space from the get go. I mean, how can you not be? It's massive! +Outdoor Patio - One of the best around. Massive green space utilizing events, music, games, etc. Plenty of tables with umbrellas. One of the more dog friendly breweries around. +Indoor Taproom - Probably their most customary space. Built for high volume, lots of high tops, some bar seating. +Upstairs Restaurant/Bar - A beautiful space that has big barrel room energy. Dark woods and a gorgeous bar. +Bottle Shop/Merch Store - Connected to the latter. Beer coolers filled with their core beers and rarities. +Brewery Space - You can walk into the brewery at any time to look at the tanks, fermenters, and canning line. It's a big operation. I like how they have plenty of tables and chairs too, so if you don't want to be in the sun (or snow) you have a place to hide. Yesterday's visit included a pretzel and two beers. The pretzel was delicious! The Patrol Dog Pale Ale and Nomadic Dreamer Hazy IPA were ideal for a warm and sunny winter day. Overall, their beers aren't my favorite in Colorado let alone Denver, but you can't knock Avery for their consistency. If you're looking to impress someone from out of state, Avery should be on your list. Even if they're a casual beer drinker, there's so much going on here that it's easy to get lost in it all. Cheers to 30 more years!

Yelp
The food was good, but the prices were high. The weather was good so sitting outside was pleasant. Outside seating is good if you have a dog in the seating party. Ive never had a soft pretzel that was priced at $12 but this was a first. It was big and good, but a bit hard to justify. Overall a pleasant place to.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Great beer in a very fun environment! Food is excellent too. Simple menu but everything is well made and delicious.
google avatar

Jeff J.

Yelp
Excellent food. The bbq meat is perfectly done. Only down side - the place is crawling with flies. They should implement some type of fly control (if you google it there are many solutions)
google avatar

Racheal G.

Yelp
Awesome pretzels They are my favorite and the server was nice Great Experience I love the princess
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
My favorite local brewery for great food and beers. They have a ton of rotating beers on tap and I've enjoyed every one I've tried, but have a special attachment to anything on the malty / dark / barrel aged part of the menu. We've taken all of our out-of-town visitors here because the food and beers hit the mark every time. Their bbq is delicious and they change up their menu so it's always a nice surprise when we visit and there's something new to sample. My personal favorites I've had here are: Beers: Ellie's Brown Ale (local favorite), White Rascal, and the Gorpe Diem (please bring this back, I was hooked!) Food: Das Pretzel, Smoked Wings (that mojo bbq is yum), brisket plate (a must order every time we visit, usually very tender and juicy) The service is usually pretty good and friendly. There's a mix of indoor / outdoor seating with an upstairs as well. Check out the shop upstairs for their take home beer selection and merch.
google avatar

Gab G.

Yelp
Came for lunch on a Wednesday and had a great time here! Clear horizons and Electric sunshine were both fantastic. My friend and I also shared a Small Caesar salad (perfect) and meat / meat / meat platter (ribs and brisket were great). Great service!
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
Went for a dinner out. Good beer. Kitchen seems to have gone downhill since a few years back. Ribs were a bit dry. Potatoes mediocre. Corn bread was just terrible. Gonna just keep this to weekend afternoon patio hangout spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Avery Brewing is an original Boulder craft brewery. Through the years, I have had the pleasure of watching them grow up from a small unit in an industrial park to several units in the same park to the beautiful building they crafted uniquely for themselves. This building is home to its entire operation, from ingredient storage and yeast propagation to brewing operations and packaging. Beyond brewing great beer, this is also home to their taproom and restaurant. Most recently, we visited for a weeknight dinner. The taproom wasn't too busy, and we were greeted by the sweetest young lady who was also tending the bar. We ordered various beers, most notably the Old Jub, which was perfect for the cold December night. We also decided to get a few food items: the gumbo, brisket nachos, and the beat salad. Everything came out of the kitchen quickly, and the food was delicious. The beat salad was fresh and funky all at the same time. The nachos were piled high with goodies, and the gumbo was rich and hearty. Everything was great. Although I've visited hundreds of times throughout the last 20 years or so, tonight, I was reminded of how great Avery Brewing really is. I can't wait to come back again.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
The 5 stars is for evaluating this as a craft beer/pub. It is casual and clean with indoor and outdoor seating. Tons of beers on tap to choose from. The food was VERY fresh and delicious. Highly recommend the smoked wings (bbq). Service was super friendly. You can view the bottling and brewery there on premises. They have a decent amount of fun merchandise to buy. I was disappointed they didn't have my size and seemed to not offer anything other than "sorry, we don't have it"!! Oh well. Minor thing. Overall it is a fun place to go, great tasting beer, plenty of parking, great food. Reserve in advance if a busy weekend day. So glad I visited!!
google avatar

Logan B.

Yelp
The food was pretty delicious. But this place is by far more brewery than a restaurant. So, don't come here unless you're going to drink. We did not drink, and it kind of appears that the food comes second and the beer comes first. The music they play is super weird. The wait staff is not super attentive. And, they have fallen into the trap of most other restaurants of thinking it's OK to charge extra for the kitchen staff. They charge an extra 4% on every bill for the kitchen staff. Why they can't just pay their kitchen workers what they want to pay them And raise their prices accordingly, is beyond me. It's not my job to pay your employees. You pay them what you want and charge what you need to for your food and drink, and I'll decide whether to come. It's pretty easy. Don't guilt me into paying 4% on the bill without any prior notification Until I sit down. I hate how Colorado restaurants do this. If you wanna pay your kitchen staff an extra 4%,, raise your prices 4% and then pay your kitchen staff What you wanna pay them. Don't know why this extra fee has been popping up all over a Colorado. Just pay your kitchen stuff what you think they're worth. And raise your prices accordingly, and if I can afford to come, I will if not, I won't. It's pretty simple.

Yelp
My partner and I came in last Saturday night and were seated promptly and then treated to the best service we have ever experienced at Avery. We had two main servers, Eva and Sierra and they were very friendly, efficient, and attentive. The beer was amazing, per usual, with our favorites being The Gold Digger, Umami Mami, Thirty, and the classic Reverend. The food was amazing as well. We had some fries with some mustard and ranch, a pretzel with cheese dip, a Caesar salad, and a chicken sandwich. At the end of the meal, Chavonne came over and introduced herself and thanked us for coming in and asked if we had a good experience. We felt very taken care of and we will be back! We highly recommend Avery Brewing!
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Honestly, I popped in here because I was in Boulder for the night for an interview. I wanted something with salmon and day they had some options. I got a large Caesar salad with double smoked salmon and some green chili on the side. First, I just want to say even on a rainy Sunday night this place was busy so patrons love it. The staff was very friendly which was nice and dogs are welcome. The salad was a good portion and the smoked slalom was pretty good. I really liked the green chili with had nice flavor and came with rice and corn bread. This is a good place to pop in for a drink or some good food. I recommend stopping by if in the area.
google avatar

Richard T.

Yelp
Hung out in evening with coworkers. Small micro-brew, good beers. Will frequent again in near future.
google avatar

Ridley N.

Yelp
Great space outdoors to enjoy a few beers. I ordered a number of their experimental beers and all of them were quite delicious. They had Avery Tweak available which is definitely worth an order if you like stouts and haven't tried it. I went with their offerings that tended towards fruity without being too sweet. I suspect those beers will rotate off the menu. As far as food, the pretzel seems to be a go to order, but I opted for the gumbo. It was fine, but I'd probably pick the pretzel on a subsequent visit. Service was very friendly and helpful in selecting some good beers. Overall, Avery Brewing offers spectacular beers at fair prices accompanied with some decent food and a nice outdoor section. It's worth a visit if you are close to Boulder.
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
Love this place! Ordered Chicken Thighs, Fried Chicken Sammy, and Chips with Guacamole, Salsa, and Queso. Everything tasted great! You can also take a self guided tour of the brewery which is really nice. The place does get super packed at night but that's to be expected and I would highly recommend getting on the waitlist on Yelp before heading over.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't come here unless you like excellent beer and food. Old Jubilation was our favorite beer, but several were very good. We tasted 7 and all were good. Cool atmosphere and good service. Top notch brewery restaurant!

Kirsten W.

Yelp
Great service, good and beverage!! Stopped in the gift shop for a few goodies too. Plan to go back next time we are in the area.

Yelp
Spending a month in the area. Avery has a relaxed ambiance, good food and service. Would go back.
google avatar

Erica H.

Yelp
Great service, food a little overpriced but good. Fantastic craft beers. Sat outside and while it was hot - the umbrella helped. Cool place but a bit of a weird location
google avatar

Sabine F.

Yelp
We are the brisket and rib plates, both tasted amazing. We are surprised how tender and flavorful the brisket was. I had the black is beautiful stout and enjoyed it very much. The brewery is beautiful.

Alison N.

Yelp
Brewery close to where we stayed & visited a couple of times. Great atmosphere, great beers & helpful staff. We had Ellie's Brown ale which I wish I could get at home. We sat inside as it was an unusually hot couple of days but they have a really nice outdoor area too.
google avatar

Scott F.

Yelp
Took the tour and it was worth every penny of the $10. Great presentation and more samples of beer than I expected. Super beers, even though I'm not much of a beer drinker. Something for everyone!
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Some of the best brewpub beer in the area, a diverse menu of excellent fare, and a delightful vibe makes this a local favorite. The outdoor dining has a folksy feel and it only gets better when they have live music. Particularly fond their barrel aged Thirty.

Laurie P.

Yelp
Friendly, efficient staff. The ribs and chicken wings are delicious. Salads are fresh and creative. Their french fries are the best in Boulder county. Their rotating beer selection always has something I love.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
The ratings must be for the beer. Not the food. Fish and chips very over cooked and no flavor The bbq ribs had no smoke flavor. Just the rub flavor. The gumbo was ok but not outstanding. The corn bread was thin and dry. Only thing we enjoyed was the brisket nachos. Very tasty. There is a kitchen tip fee and they suggest an additional 18% tip. What for. We order online. We go to the Bar for our drinks. The food was delivered as we ate inside but not one follow up for water or tea refill. The tea was warm. Ice melted immediately. We won't be back.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Large local brewery across from where I was staying. They have a huge selection of drinks on tap, and legit meal food. I liked the cider I got. I got the gumbo ($14) and found it bland and boring. I should've gotten the ribs or brisket, but I didn't have the appetite and wanted to save money. I would get ribs or brisket if I ever return

Michael J.

Yelp
The staff was very knowledgeable about the beer they have on tap. Great selection. Meat,Meat,Meat.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
I love this brewery, I live within walking distance which is perfect when I want a quick drink or don't feel like cooking. The brisket is seriously delicious and their Mac n cheese does my southern heart good!! The staff is always friendly and though I'm not a beer drinker I've actually found two there that I order every time I'm waiting, the electric sunshine is my absolute favorite, light and fruity and barely taste like beer (which is great for me).

Yelp
Avery Brewing is the best - awesome beer and great food with friendly service. We popped in on a Friday when they first opened for lunch with a party of 20 and they were sooooo kind to accommodate us!!!! Lucky we got there first thing - it gets busy quickly. The service was efficient, everyone got exactly what they ordered and we even received a small sample of a new beer . We usually sit outside, but we ventured inside to escape the fall weather chills. With 20 people, we sampled about everything on the menu from roasted chick peas to fish & chips to salads and brisket. The plates were empty and everyone was happy with their meal. You can't go wrong at Avery!
