The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants | Eater DC

"Con Alma is a favorite downtown destination for pre- and post-show drinks and entertainment in a standalone space. The broad dining room and elegant bar harken back to an era when Pittsburgh was a hotbed for jazz. Today, you’ll find local and touring musicians playing here seven nights a week. Con Alma’s drinks menu features terrific seasonal cocktails, (spins on) classics, and a sharply curated wine list. The establishment’s dinner menu draws from Mediterranean influences, with roasted whole branzino with spicy berbere caponata, preserved lemon, and snacky bites like beet muhammara." - Melissa McCart

"Don’t come to Con Alma hoping to debrief about your latest work or love life drama—they usually have genre-bending live jazz playing, and you’re gonna want to listen. While the music is the main attraction, the food isn’t an afterthought. Try dishes like za’atar-dusted sourdough wheat focaccia, smoky Peruvian red pepper-covered and mushroom-loaded lo mein, and kimchi fried rice with pork belly burnt ends. Check their website if you want to see the full music calendar, but it’s also fun to show up without context and see if tonight is going to be a jam session led by a legendary sax player or a vocalist belting out a lovely rendition of “Fly Me To The Moon.”" - elaine zedack, quayla allen

"Follow the sounds of music to Con Alma (translation: with soul), the restaurant and bar bringing jazz back to Pittsburgh’s historic Cultural District. There you’ll find co-owner and executive chef Josh Ross serving up Latin-inspired dishes like albacore xnipec with tortilla chips, bacalaitos, and lechon asado (as well as global dishes like dan dan mian and Korean fried chicken). Recently named one of the best bars in America by Esquire, the cocktail program, led by bar manager Hannah McKee, isn’t too shabby either. Meanwhile, the live jazz program curated by co-owner John Shannon has featured Pittsburgh legends like Roger Humphries and the RH Factor. All these elements make Con Alma a must-visit." - Briana L White

Our server was spectacular and the food was delicious. We ended up have 3 full courses, a bottle of wine and two coctail. I would however say that the host left a lot to be desired. I fact we almost left because of her pretentious attitude. We were in shorts and maybe a tad underdressed but nothinh too crazy. That said dinner was $300. So be prepared that this is not a budget conscious place. All it all it was a nice evening. We would have enjoyed it better if we were inside. I highly recommend that you sit inside, so make reservations. Outside was just way too hot and out table was so wobbly that the server moved us, as the wine almost fell on the ground due to the table issue. That said out server Paul was outstanding and his recommendations made the evening (spot on, especially the pairings).

Google
Best ambiance possible with the beautiful jazz music playing from a real turn table, fabulous creative and delicious cocktails, wonderfully attentive and professional staff, this place is just a delight! We stumbled upon it during Picklesburg and what a lucky find it was! Because it was so terribly hot out that day, we didn’t have much of an appetite, but we did try the focaccia and it was absolute perfection. I loved that they did something creative with the idea of “pickling” for some of their cocktails instead of just a shot of pickle juice. Looking forward to coming back for lunch or dinner! This is a real gem in the city and I can’t believe I’m just now discovering it!

Google
Excellent food and service! Shout out to our waiter Eric for helping us narrow down our menu choices. I would recommend trying a cocktail if you go. I had the soul sauce and it was so good I had to get another one! The food is just excellent. If you go with a group, sample a few things and try different options tapas style. The music is great but very loud. Don’t go there to catch up with old friends. Go there to listen to music and eat good food.

Google
We did not get food. So my review is not on food. I will however tell you the espresso martini didn't taste like one. Didnt order a second drink but was brought it and charged for it. We didn't want to make a big deal. The rum drink was extremely sweet, I didn't finished 1/4 of it. Oh and if you go there on a music night, they are charging it on your bill, not a cover charge. In a way, I get it. But there was no announcement of it. If I was charged a cover at least I know I had a choice to whether i want to hear the awful music that night. I have never been secretly charge a cover for the band, it's like the restaurant was so cheap that they want us to pay the band and not being transparent about it. I wouldn't go back because the drinks were awful.

Google
My husband and I were in the area to celebrate our anniversary and were looking for a special place for dinner. All the reviews we saw suggested Con Alma. The atmosphere and live music were on point. It was welcoming and the really enjoyable to listen to live jazz. However, for the price point of the food and reviews we read, we were expecting our meals and drinks to be much better than they were. The appetizers’ temperature were completely off and the look of them very unappealing, and the taste and quality were not great. Our main course was mediocre. The service was attentive. I just wish there would have been some more honest reviews of the food before we had made our reservation.

Google
When one of the chefs comes to your table to delight in what you’ve ordered(pesto pasta and fried mozzarella salad) and thank you for coming to the restaurant, you know you’re in a classy place! The live jazz was phenomenal and the food was delicious. Every person, including those working, were simply happy to be there. What a fantastic experience we had as visitors from Va. Thank you!

Google
Great vibe but unfortunately my food wasn't great. Good drinks but pricey. I paid $24 for a grey goose martini at the bar while waiting for my table for dinner. I ordered the duck which was pasta with ( no exaggeration) 5 bites of ground chicken and paid $31. No duck to be found. But the band and service was great.

Google
Our server provided great service and we loved the live music. We also enjoyed the cocktails from the bar very much. I did feel a little frustrated that my entree was $33 despite being about two thirds rice and beans. While I understand that menu pricing is about much more than just the cost of food on the plate, I think Con Alma can find a better way to create a menu that feels worth it for customers.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. First off, they always have amazing jazz music. Every time I go, I hear a different band and I always have a good time. They do a great job showing how much musical talent we have in Pittsburgh and I don't think there has been a band that I didn't like. Second, they have amazing food and one of the best vegan menus in the city. I had the vegan jerk platter last time I was there, and it was bursting with flavor. I'm also a big fan of the maduros, so make sure you check them out if you stop in. But if you are not a vegan or vegetarian, they still have great options. Lastly, I love their drink menu.  They have so many creative cocktails and I always like to try something different when I go. Con Alma is a true gem in this city and I would recommend this place to anyone who likes good food and jazz music.

Yelp
I'm such a fan of Con Alma, the vibe can't be beat and is truly unique for Pittsburgh!! The intimate, cozy setting is perfect to enjoy your drink of choice and listen to live local jazz, which is available every evening. The food is great and the menu inspiration seems to change often. A couple notes - make a reservation in advance and heads up that a $10 per person live music charge is added to your bill (it's worth it!)

Yelp
Jazz bar located downtown, right on Penn Avenue. Lively jazz bar with live performances every day! They serve delicious cocktails and plant-based small plates. Their menu is inventive and creative from around the world. Their cocktails are carefully curated, and they have a lovely wine list. Tried an old fashion and Moon and Tonic. Old fashion was rich and smooth and the Moon and Tonic was coffee rum, espresso cardamom syrup and tonic- great combination. Loved enjoying a great cocktail while listening to live jazz!

Yelp
Is there a better place in Pittsburgh to hear live Jazz? I think not. You'll find local talent as well as national and international traveling acts at this, the premiere Jazz bar and restaurant in city. They've got a super talented bar staff that is always creating some fantastic cocktail creations. And the food tends to be from around the world and full of flavor. And they always have a nice selection of both vegan and Gluten free dishes.

Yelp
Came here for my birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. I've always wanted to visit as I just love the vibes here We made a reservation and glad we did as the place was packed. We had nice weather that day and sat on the outside area. We arrived just in time for the live music set that started. Our servers were amazing plus the food was nice.

Yelp
Fantastic jazz club with terrific food. If the Three Tenirs are playing, and you like traditional/contemporary saxophone-led jazz, do not miss this. Reservations will help guarantee a great show table. Love the servers - efficient and knowledgeable!!

Yelp
What an amazing evening! Con Alma has a great atmosphere, excellent staff, and the best music. Round it out with good cocktails and a simple, yet delicious, dinner menu and they have the recipe for a great night out. As a solo traveler I was able to appreciate the music even more because no chit chat was necessary.

Gregg A.

Yelp
Great Jazz here - plus amazing food! There's a large, but cozy dining area and bar. Dined here several times while visiting friends in Pittsburgh. Prices are reasonable and they have live music. Servers are professional, attentive and friendly. They've got some delicious, unique drinks you'll want to try :-) Renowned Jazz players to boot! Wish there was a place like this in our area, but if you're lucky enough to live in Pittsburgh - you'll want to be a regular at this gem! Good luck Con Alma - you've got soul :-)

Yelp
Con Alma is difficult to review. We went looking for an attractive dinner place, since much of the Penn Avenue restaurant scene has deteriorated. Our experience was very good, but due to the live jazz, not the food. The greeting and service were fine. We had good martinis, and the chicken schwarma (decent) and shrimp skewers (pretty good). The wine list was a disappointment, featuring a lot of unusual, creative foreign bottles, but lacking mainstream California choices. There were no American Chardonnays priced below about $100. The live music was an attraction, but the restaurant experience needs some work.

Yelp
This was a 10/10 experience. Everything we ate was INSANELY delicious. We literally just kept ordering appetizer after appetizer. Our waitress was so nice and helpful, and the band was so fun! I absolutely loved the vibe of this place and am honestly so excited that there is something like this in Pittsburgh. Now I know! The best thing I ate was the ceviche oyster. I've had SO many oysters from very nice restaurants, but this one at Con Alma might have been the best ever. If it's on the menu that night, it's a MUST order. I'm seriously so excited to go back here and introduce some more people to it.

Yelp
Date night success on a Sunday night! Was able to make our 6:30 reservation. Seats were front and center right in front of the amazing band performing that night. We enjoyed Tania Grubbs. The venue was smaller than I expected but it made our experience very intimate. Sound of the band was perfect. The service, hostess and person delivering the food was just so friendly, bubbly and amazing! Everyone we encountered was just great further making our experience a memorable one. Pricing for good was a little high in pricing for what we were served however. it was not bad as far as taste and came hot and fresh. Menu changes daily we were told. There is a cover and 2 hour minimum when busy. Sunday was a perfect day to come and check them out. We will come back.

Yelp
Delicious food. Heard it was a Cuban spot but got here and it had an Indian themed menu. Kali provided excellent service and told us they have a "world" menu and the theme changes every other month so there is always something new. Great concept
google avatar

Alan B.

Yelp
A local friend recommended that we come here for the jazz and the food. What a fun experience. Mara our waitress and Susie the hostess were great, and the jazz was a lot of fun (a quartet of older guys who played great). We had the Baba and Hummus and the Stonefruit Salad, along with a couple of drinks while listening to the jazz. Both were very good and the portions were very large. If you're looking for a fun place for dinner and music, this is your place.

Yelp
Really cool vibe, if coming 100% come on a live music night to make it worth it. Drinks are strong, some hit some are misses but to each their own (drinks/meals are pricey tho imo). If you know what drinks you like, I'm sure this bar can do you good. The jazz is great, the vibe is smooth, rly cool place to relax and chat at if this is your vibe. Def rec at least going once.

Yelp
This is such a cute place for drinks!! It was my first time going to a jazz bar and I was thoroughly impressed. The live music was so good, and the performers had amazing energy. The whole place was really lively and overall a really fun vibe. It's really loud with the live music in the background so it's not an ideal place to have conversation -- it's more of a drink and dance type vibe. We ordered food for dinner too but the food wasn't that memorable -- we loved the drinks though. I'd probably skip the food and just get drinks next time! Even though the place is a bit hectic with the music and the amount of people, the service was still excellent and not too slow! Would highly recommend for a unique night out!

Yelp
Con Alma is genuinely such a delight! This jazz club has been on my list for ages, and it did not disappoint at all. We made a reservation, which I recommend you do a few days prior as the inside was packed, and there was a small line (even for those with reservations). Seating only took a few minutes, and I suggest you snag a seat in the inside lounge. The seats all face towards the stage, and it is so much fun watching the jazz band perform. The low lighting also made for a classy atmosphere. The servers were very sweet and had a good sense of what was popular on the menu. Our waiter pointed out that the Nashville hot chicken ($25) was very spicy, and I do agree in case anyone reading this is spice intolerant! The food was delicious, though a bit pricey. I ended up sharing the chicken with my friend, and I think that splitting an entree between two was a good idea considering the large portions. My cocktail ($13) was also so good (and a bit strong!). I will note that there is a $20 cover added to your bill (per party, not per person), which I assume is for the cost of watching the show. However, this does not bother me since it is a small price to pay for a unique jazz performance!

Yelp
Date night at the Benedum with the hubby so we decided to stop here for a beverage and bite to eat considering it's close location to the Center. So happy we did! Small bar but we got lucky with two open seats, still a great view of the jazz playing on stage. Bartenders seemed very nice, but also very busy ! I ordered a brut Chardonnay and my husband a silver tequilla - decent pours. My husband ordered the SWEET POTATO POUTINE which was a little overwhelming with the amount of gravy but still delicious. I ordered some kind of tuna dish - very pleased! (Photos) We stopped back after the concert where they were doing last call shortly but still held great service while pouring us our last round of drinks. We will be back

Yelp
This restaurant is very interesting. . . in a good way! The kimchi fried rice with chicken was delicious with complex flavors. The chicken and waffle was very different and also delicious. All of the food was fresh and thoughtfully created. This was easily the best restaurant close to the convention center. They also had a great wine selection that I absolutely enjoyed. The hostess and waiter were really nice. This place is definitely a must try.
google avatar

Marlee B.

Yelp
I will be thinking about the Brussels and Tofu for a while!!! The cocktails were unqiue, and the band was great. Such a beautiful space! The menu is clearly marked for gluten allergies. I would recommend a reservation if you have a larger group or come before the band begins.
google avatar

Cj S.

Yelp
Great food- not too horribly priced The jazz was hot that not- they do charge $10's a person on music nights. So definitely go if you're down to chill. Server was nice, checked in on us more than enough times. Great store location. Great vibes

Domenic G.

Yelp
One of Pittsburgh's absolute finest. Between the ambiance, excellent food, and awesome live music played by local artists of all genres, this is the place to be on the weekend or if you want to go on a romantic date night.
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Con Alma for the win again! Please note this place has live music, if you are planning on a conversational dinner or drink, when making reservation ask to be outside or in the back. Live music is always incredible here! Tonight did not disappoint! Drinks were amazing and there were plenty to choose from. Serving staff was great with allergies and recommendations on drinks and food. Ordered a few small plates (only 1 GF option) and they were so large we didn't order anything else. These small plates would be great to share with a large party. Had the vegetable platter, it was the only gluten free small plate they had, it did not disappoint, even non gf company loved it. Because I have some dietary restrictions I think next time I will try out there Ellsworth location, as they have more options there.

Yelp
AMAZING PLACE !!! Food and drink were wonderful. Vibe was relaxing and enjoyable. If you love Jazz Music, food, and a GREAT VIBE, this is the place. I would recommend this . Service was great. They were attentive even though it was SUPER packed !! I would come again

Yelp
Con Alma is a fun and unique atmosphere! I finally got to dine there last week and the atmosphere was great. It's very moody/vibey with the jazz music and lighting. We made reservations and were sat right away, but they were extremely busy. I definitely recommend getting reservations. For food we ordered the Empanada, Plantain Lasagna, Salmon, and Baked Macaroni Pie. All of the food I tried was pretty good. My favorite dish was the baked macaroni pie. It was my first time having that and it was sooo good! The outer parts were a tad burnt but I just ate around it. My boyfriend got the salmon and said it was not good and super bland. I don't like salmon so I didn't even try it, but he gets salmon out a lot. The empanadas were good as well. For drinks, we got a Dirty Martini, red wine, and The Fatha cocktail. My martini was good and my boyfriend liked his wine! My sister got the Fatha cocktail and she didn't really enjoy it. She said it was like room temp instead of cold and it kind of threw off the whole drink. Their dinner menu is on the small side. It's the type of place you just get some drinks with your significant other or a friend and a dish to share! We had a really fun time listening to the live music as well.

Yelp
I went here for dinner with my friend at 6 p.m. before the DVE comedy fest and it was so much fun! We opted to sit at the bar even though we had a reservation. The bar has such a great view of the stage and it is not too loud so you can chat easily. Our bar manager, Hanna, was the best. She made great food recommendations and was very attentive to our needs. For cocktails, I ordered the Backstage Sally and Blue in Green. I loved the Backstage Sally although it is very citrusy so look out of you get heart burn easily. The fried green tomatoes are unbelievable. My friend had the hot chicken with shoestring fries and jalapeño cornbread. I had the veggie tacos. Seriously, everything was DELICIOUS. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Where to begin? I made reservations for two for my Wife's birthday specifically to see the live music. Cons: 1. We were seated off to the side directly against the large double doors in 35-degree weather. We were cold and could not see the live performance, so that was a complete bust. It was also so busy that there was no chance to get another seat. Word of warning: if you are making reservations for the music make sure you ask to be seated with a view of the band. 2. Our table was unstable. This is an upscale restaurant/jazz club, can you not fix the tables? 3. Their online menu is incorrect, don't bother looking at it ahead of time. We were set on certain dishes, but when we received the menu it was completely different. We had to change our orders, then we were informed that the menu that was given to us was from the day before and it was different tonight...so we had to change our order again. The owner announced that the menu changes often and signing up for the newsletter is the best way to stay up to date. No, my guy, I just want to look at the site, that should be updated or don't bother having one. 4. The food was monstrously salty (I have read other reviews and it seems to be a theme). There was a long hair in my first bite and I usually do not care about that kind of thing, but the night was already ruined and it just made it worse. 5. Service was meh it took about 10 minutes to get cocktails. It was busy, and our server seemed to be one of three, but still. In that case, management should step in and give a hand. 6. When I made reservations I was asked if there were any special requests. I asked for one rose to be set at our table and offered to pay extra. They ended up acknowledging it was a special occasion with a paper coaster that someone wrote "Happy birthday" on and taped a ribbon to it that was very clearly ripped off of a Christmas present (it still had remnants of paper on it) Pros: 1. Coctkails were good 2. The band was good (although we couldn't see them) 3. Cool atmosphere This was so disappointing. We were really looking forward to seeing some live jazz. We don't plan on returning unless it is strictly to sit at the bar and get a drink.

Yelp
Lovely lovely ambience!! I honestly didn't wanna leave. I came here in a Saturday night with a friend of mine. We walked in after enjoying a lovely play a few blocks down and we're able to be seated immediately! They have live music pretty much every night and this night didn't disappoint at all!! The food was really good but they ran out of several items I wanted to try. I guess I'll have to come back for it:). I didn't order any alcoholic drinks but they look amazing. Service was fast and very friendly. Just FYI they do charge $10/per person for live music which is a bit annoying but If it's shared with the artist, I suppose that's fair. Definitely coming back if I'm in town!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Many times have walked past Con Alma but only recently decided to stop in. Sat outside with my friend and had appetizer of fried green tomatoes, and a shareable plate with jerk chicken and plantains with watermelon. Everything was amazing, and the jerk chicken flavors were well balanced between sweet, spicy, cool, and hot (between the mango and cream toppings that cane with it) . The watermelon also went well with the entree. The service was awesome, and the jazz music added a nice touch of chill and relaxation. No room for dessert but I'll be back. Five stars - don't miss it.

Yelp
We walked in without a reservation so we knew we may have a challenge getting a seat. Luckily a couple was leaving the bar so we took their spots. The service team didn't really help us though we did it ourselves. This place has live jazz so the ambiance is similar to a trendy yet retro jazz club. Records on shelves, darker colors, lower lighting, etc. Upon sitting at the bar it took a bit for the bartender to address us. Then we ordered our cocktails, my partner received hers while I waited another 10 minutes for mine! I had the Angels Eyes and she had the scenes in the city. Both of us looked at each other and thought, there isn't much alcohol in these.... Well we were a little hungry again so we ordered 1 tuna tostados and plantanos to share. The tostados were okay, not bad but lacking a little flavor. The plantanos were VERY good and honestly, was the best thing by far. They were made soft with a thick glaze and full of flavor. When looking at the bill we were charged 20 dollars for the live music. This was never disclosed until I read it on the check...unreal. Service was poor, the drinks were weak, and the food was hit or miss.... Music was fun to watch and listen to. Overall I wouldn't return as it's just not worth the time or money.

Yelp
Words fail me! Our "dine-around" group from our conference at the Westin Pittsburgh attended a performance and enjoyed dinner at this place. What a night! The attentive staff, the talented musicians and vocalist (who near the end of the show was sorta joined by the jazzy singers at our table) and the good natured other patrons who gave us grace as we made a scene entering, exiting and during our time there! Between the signature cocktails, a visionary wine list (especially the organic reds from Spain), and the bubbly that flowed compliments of the club and Pittsburgh's heroic DMO that hosted us, we had a ball. Leaving a star off because the jambalaya was a bit sticky and could have fed a family of four. But most of us ordered it and enjoyed what we could!

Lamar F.

Yelp
Go for the music. The food is OK. Portions are very large. There is a lot of cheese. They will make it with soy cheese if you ask. Service is not rushed, but if you are in a hurry, don't go. Go for the jazz and stay for the whole set.
google avatar

Lily C.

Yelp
Visited here from out of state with my hubby and only ordered their drinks cause it looked like a swanky bar with cool jazz music. Only turn off here was the $10 charge per person for live music which is posted on the hosts stand in small prints which I don't understand why they can't enlarge so people won't get confused when checking the credit card bill. Service was good.

Yelp
Came for a late night drink and they killed the espresso martini game. Can't wait to come back and enjoy more

Yelp
We came here for my friend's 22nd birthday dinner. Just entering the restaurant it had a great vibe for it with dim lighting and live jazz music. We ordered drinks and they were quite strong so good bang for your buck. None of us were quite crazy about the taste of them. I have never seen goat on a menu so I had to order the goat curry and it was delicious! I had leftovers to take home because it was so much food. The waitress came around and checked on us usually having to refill our very tiny water glasses. Overall, it was a good experience and I would like to come back here for a date night or just drinks.

Colin F.

Yelp
Suzy and Mitchell were great! 6 for a reservation and we added 4 more, (making it 10) . The music was good both times I went. Ordered some drinks at the bar while our table was being expanded and they did not water them down! Had a martini and Chilean Sea bass. Will go again

Yelp
Such a fun cool place to stop in for a drink or dinner. We sat at the bar and listened to the live jazz band. The bartenders were great and the drinks were delicious

Yelp
Com alma is my go-to dinner spot before seeing a show downtown. The changing menu never disappoints. I especially love their eggplant small plate. Top 5 best old fashion I've ever had. Have an extensive specialty cocktail list. And the live music is so great! It does get pretty loud but that's what you're there for.

Yelp
We visited the first time on New Years Eve Eve, and were so very impressed. We were able to snag a reservation about a week ahead. Thank goodness, because we never would have gotten in without a reservation... it was packed. Dozens of people packed in to the bar area to listen and get a drink. Its beautifully decorated and adorned with low light, green velvet, and dark fixtures. There are limited tables, though we were told this location is larger than the original. The food here was unexpectedly AHH-MAZING. We got Wok Hei Mushrooms for appetizer, which were soft, perfectly seasoned, and delicious. For dinner we ordered the Crab & Shrimp Gumbo, Lentil & Peanut Curry, and the new-to-the-menu Lobster Fried Sticky Rice. Everything was absolutely delicious. The lobster sticky rice stole the show easily, and could be one of the top 20 dishes I've ever eaten anywhere. So, so good. Our service was excellent. They were wildly busy, but our server took excellent care of us. We took our two (older) kids here and felt absolutely comfortable. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
What a cool spot! A friend and I came here before a show on a whim one Saturday night. We sat in the bar area which is seat yourself. We sat on these beautiful celebrate couches/chairs. We came just for drinks and appetizers. They did not disappoint! The atmosphere takes the cake though - they have live jazz music, cool light and beautiful decor. I will definitely be back for dinner soon!

Yelp
Great jazz bar in downtown! They have a smaller location in Shadyside but this one is larger, yet it still feels intimate. That location has a vegan food menu and this one isn't vegan. This location is also open later. They have tables close to the stage for those who made reservations. You need to make one in advance. They also have a bar area for walk-ins. When we first came in, we had to awkwardly sit/stand off to the side but eventually a spot opened up at the bar. Their cocktails are one-of-a-kind with unique ingredients. Super fun to try them out! My first drink was Clover Club which had gin, raspberry and lemon. It was good and not too sweet. I also tried the Carrot Sangrita which came as a shot and the carrot mix off to the side. I thought that was unique, but also kind of odd haha. You take a sip of the tequila and then follow it with the drink. I eventually just poured the tequila in the drink mix to make my life easier. I forget the name of my final drink but it had celery in it and it was actually quite good and refreshing. Fun spot to check out! And the jazz is great.

Yelp
Very cute restaurant to dine at! Great vibes, amazing music, good drinks/food, and good service! My dad and I dined here last night for dinner and enjoyed our experience very much. Drinks were good, but not that strong. We each ordered 2 drinks and thought they were tasty, but light. I enjoyed the east side very much. Not sweet and very refreshing! We ordered the watermelon guacamole, which was a unique and tasty appetizer. Had a nice little kick to it. The chips that it came with were amazing and salty! I ordered the carne asada and my dad ordered the pescado frito. Both dishes were delicious and extremely filling. We had to get take out boxes and had zero room for dessert. Highly recommend checking this place out! A very different and fun idea. If you dine during the music, it's $10 extra per person. Worth it!

Yelp
Imagine you could step back in time and visit one of the great Jazz clubs of the 1930's. That's all here at Con Alma. The restaurant is designed with Jazz music in mind. I enjoyed the Con Alma in Shady Side, but I felt it was too small, and you were sitting almost on top of the musicians. The Con Alma Downtown is the right size and the energy of the Jazz here is wonderful. The food is remarkable and I'm digging the Latin theme. The Pastelon (Puerto Rican sweet plantain lasagna) is delicious: sweet, savory, and spicy. We also ordered the Watermelon Guacamole, which really works. The band was taking requests, but ended up playing my favorite without asking (Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life). This is music that originated in Pittsburgh and it's fantastic that it's being played here. Reservations are almost a necessity, however there's a nice lounge and bar area. The location is in the heart of the Cultural District, right across from Heinz Hall.

Yelp
This a pretty great jazz restaurant/bar in downtown Pittsburgh. I went here with a friend on a Saturday night, and even though we didn't have a reservation we were still seated almost immediately. We even had a great spot of the stage to listen to the band playing that night. We got a handful of plates to share, all very delicious. It ranged from chips and guac, to ceviche, to empanadas. My only gripe is that some things on the menu were a little expensive, but the place was full of people and it was a great experience. The bar area they have is slightly separate from the dining area, and they have some additional sofas/chairs for people to lounge on. For a Saturday night it was a really positive vibe, so I would certainly recommend this place for a date night or a night out with a group.

Yelp
We absolutely love Con Alma. We've been there several times. The first time, we were a bit overwhelmed by the menu. It offered very different choices-I think I may have ordered wrong-and didn't really like my dish. There was nothing wrong with it, I am just pickier than I think I am!! When we went back we were blown away! Everything was fantastic! We were a table of 4. We each ordered something different. We got a chance to taste each others dishes. They were fantastic! We've been back twice since. Their menu changes so often, so it's hard to tell you what to order. They have a few staples, like chicken and rice which is fantastic. They also have an array of ice cream sandwiches for dessert-YUM! Just enough of a bite if you share with someone else to end a good meal. Their drinks are really something to talk about. They too will change periodically. I, personally, love their wine selections (especially by the glass). You cannot go wrong at Con Alma. The music gets a little loud-but, worth it for sure! The servers are above and beyond-they offer suggestions and really make your experience top notch. We have had several servers, but get excited when we see that Dillon will be taking care of us. He tells you about the foods, the drinks, and offers fantastic suggestions. Kate is a terrific bartender as well! Always there to help you to decide.

Yelp
Con Alma has made my best memory for my first time in Pittsburgh. Obviously there are many choices for bars and restaurants in downtown Pittsburgh, I'm glad I picked Con Alma. The live jazz, unique cocktails, delicious food, the space and the services are all five stars. I felt jazzy from the moment I walked in. The indoor space is connected with the outdoor, very summery yet full of artistry, different from elsewhere. Cocktails are excellent. I found a couple decent ones, backstage Sally and Carrot Sangrita. 5++ Their food has incorporated international twists with very nice presentation. Definitely the highlight for the night. Oh the jazz, of course the jazz, that's why I was there. Did I tell you that I stayed for the entire performance, made sure they were done before I took off. Last but not the least, people are always the key to bring everything together. I love my waitress. She is super helpful. A pleasant jazzy woman for sure! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Had such a fun, sophisticated night out in downtown Pittsburgh enjoying food, cocktails, & great conversation. After dinner we hit Con Alma's downtown location. This is one of my favorite cocktail lounges in Pittsburgh aesthetically. Plus, the cocktails & service are great & you get to enjoy some live music. This is the perfect cocktail bar for a night out with friends or a sexy date night. I've had their food in the past as well & it was unique & delicious. DRINKS The Fatha 2: gin, early grey, vanilla, lemon, lavender oil, aquafaba, bee pollen - super rich & delicious. A sipper for me. Taste of Honey: rum with miletti amaro, NOLA coffee liqueur, espresso, oat milk, & honey served in a cute little nick & nora glass. Another "yum" dessert cocktail. Went down very easily. Green in Blue: mango mate infused scotch, lemon & honey syrup - we joked that this one "somehow tasted green & blue". I'm not a scotch girl, but tasted this & it was good. A very drinkable scotch cocktail.

Yelp
A super freakin' solid 4 stars for Con Alma's downtown location. This'll be only for the food as our party of four got wine and not cocktails. The menu online is slightly different from the one we saw in person, FYI. Also, there was live music (as there seems to be most nights) and it was very busy so service wasn't as efficient as somewhere else, but it was still incredibly attentive and both of our servers were absolutely lovely. Our party of 4 was here tonight celebrating my Fiancee's Master's diploma from CMU. We started with the sliders, Empanada and plantains (which are a different dish than what's listed on the website). The latter drew high praise and the empanada was really good as well; if multiple people want that though, get one each. The Sliders were tasty and also very nice but were comparatively the weaker of the three. They were very good, just a step down from otherwise incredible food. Mains: Our party of 4 got the shrimp enchilado (wonderfully explained to us as 'not an enchilada, just so you know') Cubano sandwich, Ropa vieja and Arroz Con Pollo. That latter one was mine and while very tasty overall with good flavors from every component, it was a smidge salty and needed a couple passes of pepper or something. I can see someone not liking it because of the salty notes. The Cubano got high praise as did the Ropa Vieja. The shrimp dish was also very tasty. Enjoyed it!
