The 7 Best Peruvian Restaurants In London

"Sabor Peruano has a very specific atmosphere. Outside it’s a canteen, but inside it gives 1960s banquet wedding. The fact you can’t smoke inside feels like a great shame. But you’ll soon forget that once you have a pisco sour in your hand and some yuca frita in front of you. The Elephant and Castle spot should be close to the top of your list in terms of Peruvian restaurants in London for three reasons: it’s great-value, has traditional cooking, and it closes before 10pm, so you can have a great dinner and still have time to do nothing on the sofa." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley

The 15 Best Restaurants In Elephant And Castle

"Restaurants like Sabor Peruano are very easy to settle into. The Peruvian spot opposite St. Mary’s Churchyard has an old-school white tablecloth aesthetic and a familial atmosphere where every table is sharing anticuchos and stabbing at ceviche mixto. Both of these dishes are delicious. The beef heart skewers are tender and gently spiced and the ceviche is as enlivening a plate of food as you’ll eat anywhere. It’s open for lunch but just know that dinner service finishes at 9pm, latest, on weekends. It’s a family affair, after all." - jake missing, sinead cranna

Best Restaurants in Elephant and Castle | Eater London

"‘Fusion’ cuisine hardly reveals the brutal histories it masks — and the Peruvian tradition of chifa belongs here. Brought to Peru by Guangdong labourers to be slaves, they left an indelible mark on Peruvian cuisine and many of these dishes can be found on Sabor Peruano’s menu: darkly sweet and acidic lomo saltado, a beef stir fry dense with soy, vinegar and onions. Better still is the seco norteño, a slow-cooked stew of beef and potato, coloured ditchwater green-brown by the aggressive use of coriander. The non-chifa dishes are well worth ordering too — ceviche is fresh, well-cured and bracingly acidic as part of a trimarinero, while anticuchos come correct as tender parchments of beef heart, marinated with the sting of aji amarillo. The same subtle heat turns up in the humblest and maybe best dish: a starter of papa huancaina, a simple dish of boiled potatoes served cold in a pool of custard-coloured sauce made from queso fresco, aji amarillo and milk." - Jonathan Nunn

This is a real hidden gem in London. I happened to be in the area and you are spoilt for choice with places, however, decided to take a chance on this restaurant. Please do not be put-off by its location and how it looks on the outside. Once inside, I was warmly welcomed, service was friendly and efficient, and most importantly, the food was incredible! I had the aji de gallina and it was a wonderful combination of and sweet and spicy. Take a chance on this place and you won't regret it. The only advice I'd give to the owners is that when it is summer and the weather is hot (like it was when I visited), you might need to look into getting stronger AC or fans. In addition, to help the place look more welcoming you could let more light in through the windows. Maybe even think about outside seating, although, perhaps it could be noisy.

Where do you turn to healthy food when your traveling gets you feeling sick? When in London, for sure Sabor Peruano! I went there feeling not so well in need of some TLC. Great hearty chicken soup, the real stuff. Amazing Chaufa ( fried rice), the tamales and the personable touch of the owner. He makes a point in making you feel taken care of. Easy location, short uber ride from our hotel. Thank you for making us feel better and at home!

Google
Amazing service, amazing food. My favorite is the lomo saltado and the arroz chaufa. It tastes and looks exactly like it does in Peru. Generous portions. There’s Inca Kola and Peruvian beer. There’s also plenty of vegetarian options!

Yelp
Amazing!!! I am Peruvian, and this place reminds me of the restaurants I used to go to with my family when I was young! I've been a few times so far, including once with a large group of people, and we've always been easily accommodated and treated with smiles. Here are my reviews of some of the dishes: Lomo Saltado (beef stir-fry with chips): This is probably my favorite Peruvian dish ever; it's my go-to comfort food. The flavors are excellent. The dish is very generous, and I was able to happily enjoy my leftovers the next day! Anticuchos (beef heart): My boyfriend tried this dish for the first time ever, and he really enjoyed it! It might make some people a bit squeamish, but it's honestly a delicious dish that goes excellently with some boiled potatoes. Ají de gallina (spiced/creamy chicken) Another one of my comfort foods, this was delicious and was a VERY generous portion. Excellent to have half in the restaurant and use the rest the next day for sandwich filling! Yuca a la huancaína (fried cassava): Delicious. Perfectly fried yuca with some dipping sauce. I only wish there had been more! Ají sauce (green, spicy sauce): I didn't have any of this, as I am horrid with spicy sauces, BUT my Indian and Persian friends who came fell in love with this sauce so much that they requested to take some back with them after our meal! My one critique thus far is with the drinks: I haven't been able to try their chicha morada yet, so I'm not sure if it's homemade or from a mix or from a bottle, and when we ordered Inka Cola, we were given Andina Cola (really similar, but technically not the same). Small points to mention, but important to know regardless! I will say that our fruit drinks were freshly made and very good! Everyone who works here has been really lovely and friendly, and every time I've been there, Peruvians have been eating there. If that's not a glowing review to try it for authentic Peruvian food, I don't know what is! I honestly can't wait to go again and have other dishes on the menu!

Yelp
I went there a week before Christmas and the place showed a lot of potential in my point of view. Yes! As a Peruvian man, I saw this place as the traditional Peruvian restaurant however there were some small problems with the place, here's a couple: 1) Chicha morada: for those who don't know, chicha morada is a Peruvian sweet drink however this one tasted artificial, in my opinion, add something sour so that the drinks blends and makes the authentic taste. 2) Fried Jalea fish dish: I've been to Peru before and before trying it, I witnessed that there was more than one type of fish on the plate. The lettuce wasn't up to par and the cancha needed salt. 3) Ceviche traditional: This meal tasted excellent, the fish was right, leche de Tigre, even the sweet potato was on point. 4) Ice cream of Lùcuma: The ice cream really let it down because they told me it was homemade but honestly, this tasted more like ice than ice cream because the texture was too hard and it was not creamy enough. Hospitality was excellent, really comforting environment and a traditional Peruvian restaurant overall.

Yelp
Welcome to Sabor Peruano, where they really have no options for vegetarians. After seeing great reviews on google for the restaurant, I decided to give them a call, asking if they had options for us veggies! They assured me over the phone there was no problem. I am slightly disappointed that the only option I could have was a rice and vegetable stir fry, or noodles with vegetable stir fry. The portion size was huge, but the flavours were standard. We ended up stuffing ourselves with plenty of food, but I feel this does not justify the lack of variety (this could be a reflection of Peruvian food, not the restaurant alone). We started with some yuca; they were extremely thick wedges, and the sauce was on point! We also had pisco sours, which were incredibly sweet for our taste. My boyfriend ordered a portion of calamari, which seemed light and crispy, but I can't say whether or not they were outstanding. All in all, I'll be bringing my taste buds elsewhere. For all you who are looking for the authentic cuisine, I'm told this is the place to go! However, if you're like me and can't eat half the menu, you'll be sorely disappointed.
