The Bay’s Favorite Rare Beer Makes Its Annual Migration - Eater SF

Sage Bakehouse - Review - Montara - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Sage Bakehouse may look like a standard lattes-and-pastries joint, only they specialize in savory pies with flaky, golden-brown crusts. Flavors range from minced beef and cheddar to Hungarian chicken paprikash and seasonal vegetable. If you like spicy food, we suggest tacking on a sausage roll, then balancing it out with a sweet Pop-Tart-style hand pie (no cloying, goopy sugar bombs here). Sage Bakehouse is slightly north of Half Moon Bay, but the pies are worth a trip." - Gabi Moskowitz

We stopped here for lunch on a weekday afternoon after a visit to Moss Beach and were wowed by the pies. We ordered 6 different pies between us and loved them all—the curried squash was my favorite. Service was quick and excellent and we really enjoyed eating on the patio with a view of the ocean. Plenty of free parking. Highly recommend!

Google
The pie, the tea, and the people are excellent. We stopped here on our road trip, and we were very impressed. The owner and staff were so friendly, and you could tell they are very active in their local community. They even gave us some tea bags to take home as a gift since we said we loved trying new tea! We also got the raspberry fruit pie—hands down, best pie I’ve ever had. Do yourself a favor and visit if you are in the area!

Google
Absolutely loved it. Everyone was super friendly and you can tell they really care about what they do! Pastries are off the chart. We basically got one of each of the pies that were available that day and ever was delicious. The pastry itself is amazing and the fillings are delicious. Definitely lives up to the rating. The drinks are great too! Cute cozy space inside as well as a great patio where you can enjoy the sea breeze.

As one of Sage Bakehouse’s youngest customers, I have to give this place a solid 5! The service is absolutely amazing, everyone is super friendly. They steamed my milk to just the right temperature, not too hot or too cold. Their strawberry pie is so good, I could eat it all! They also sell some local goods, including some beautiful baskets that I love. I also love the outdoor patio, I often get to see some dogs (my favorite animal) and the atmosphere is very welcoming!

Google
Such a cute little place, with super nice people. And the food is delicious. I love their Chicken Pot Pie. It's the perfect size, nice pastry crust, and a tasty balance to the flavor. I was pleased to discover this cafe location after having seen them at Farmer's markets before!

Google
This is a great little shop with some delicious pies but.... You will have to wait 10-20 by the time they are done. They are made in small batches so it's hot and nuts when you can order and actually enjoy the food. Process are a bit high for the portion you get. Love that they made the outside seating and they have large windows for wind blocking. Beware of the live band! They are so loud that you will not be able to hear your own thoughts yet alone have a conversation. Will I come back? Maybe really early when no one is here. We were here at noon and it was packed. Will be avoiding the place during busy hours.

Google
GIANT thank you to Nick and the team at Sage Bakehouse! I held a birthday party in downtown SF over the weekend and “oh boy” did they deliver. The mini meat pies and sausage rolls they delivered (personally) went down an absolute treat. As a true blown Aussie, I was blown away by the quality. It felt just like home! They even threw in some extra blueberry pies and cookies, which I’m already craving again. Highly recommend for anyone looking for quality baked goods!

Google
Pulled into the attached parking lot. Greeted by friendly staff. They have both indoor and patio seating. Coffee was good. I like that they have beans from several local sources. Tea options are nice and they also sell that brand. Didn’t have the food but looks good.

Yelp
The pot pies are the bomb ! Perfect size portion with superb quality ingredients! Great location ! Friendly staff ! The buy 5 get one free frozen pie special is awesome!! When I have guests, it's a great , delicious meal! Coffee and pop tarts are amazing too !!

Yelp
I was on my way to Montara state beach and decided to stop for lunch. When I discovered that the bakery makes Australian savory pies, I was so excited (their local competitors are few and far between in Vallejo and Windsor). I bought the traditional Aussie pie, the sausage roll and a chai latte. The pie was excellent, and the cafe knew to have ketchup on standby to complete the experience. The sausage roll was a letdown - the filling was crumbly and the pastry was too thick. They should try filo for a more authentic texture. I loved the dog friendly patio and the option to buy frozen pies (buy 5 get 1 free). I will certainly return when on the coast!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing savory pies are at Sage! The best part is the special of buying 5 get 1 free. They are easily rebaked when you buy the frozen one. The size and the filling of the pie is perfect. The savory pies are super convenient to prepare for a quick meal for one or two! The ambiance is soothing and satisfying with the perfect lighting, decor, sounds, and even wonderful smell from the bakery. The service is great, quick and easy. Everyone works here is happy and efficient. The place is clean and earthy. Must stop by for one pie or more. And don't forget to check out a the tasty apple pie!

Yelp
Remote (between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay on Highway 1) but fantastic, and among the best savory pies in the Bay Area. I arrived mid-afternoon and selection was limited, but the pork verde was delicious and still warm). I'd go back if it were closer - for now I'll just remember how the warm pie in the cold coast kept me going.

Yelp
Pies. To me, pies are usually pretty good. I guess pies can be bad, but usually are pretty good. The pies at Sage Bakehouse, pretty darned good. Between the savory (Hungarian Chicken) and the sweet (Pumpkin), they were both well made and good. They didn't blow my socks off, but they were good and tasty. The coffees are well made. Their attention to detail, like the small pieces of ice rather than the large chunks, is really appreciated. The Americano was well made. Good view of the ocean, and the street. With limited parking and a small bathroom in the back, this spot is nice, relaxing, and with good treats and coffee to boot, excellent place to stop by next time you're in town.

Yelp
A beloved and only coffee shop in the immediate area, the Sage Bakehouse offers a beautifully refreshing place for you to collect your thoughts, read, and take it slow at this beautiful beach town. The interior is rustic and cosy, and the servers are quick and reliable. They are known for their pie, which you can take to the beach or as fuel for a full day of hiking. Took a star off for their absolutely milky chai and matcha latte. Don't expect anything too high quality drinks wise, and you'll enjoy your time here !

Neetha B.

Yelp
We were parked next to the bakery after it was closed, and a very sweet gentleman kind enough to offer us some warm, delicious pies. The pies were amazing, I will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Laura E.

Yelp
The pie is amazing. Flaky crust and so many fillings everyone will be pleased. Have one on premise and pick up more frozen to go.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
The hand pies are good both in flavor and variety. I like their hot sauces too. The coffee is ok but not as good as some more dedicated coffee shops I've been to. Also they have a nice dog-friendly patio. I think the pies would be great to-go beach food.

Yelp
Great coffee, delicious pie with lots of pulled pork. Super friendly staff. Worth a stop. They also have some nice outdoor seating.

Yelp
Had a macchiato. It was okay, a bit too strong for me. The cafe is cozy. Staff were polite. Would visit again.

Yelp
Full disclosure: I work here. Which means I have had the pleasure of trying every flavor of savory pie, both the traditional and the inspired, as well as having enjoyed hundreds of handcrafted beverages from my barista companions (and a few made by myself!) over the 19 months we've been open. But, most of all, I've had the pleasure of serving a welcoming, curious community whose support has been incredible! I'm proud of us at Sage Bakehouse, and I'm proud that we can be your pie and coffee shop of choice on the Coastside. See you again soon!

Yelp
Such a lovely little spot with great coffee and delicious treats. I highly recommend, especially on foggy mornings. I had a cappuccino, which was wonderful and we tried the pork verde mini pie, which was absolutely delicious! They also have a variety of house made syrups, like cookie butter and lavender. Service was excellent! Thank you!

Tuts L.

Yelp
Aussie steak and peach pop tart matched wit mocha coffee is excellent. not to mention the friendly crews inside a cozy and warm place . This is 5 star friendly cafe.

Yelp
Yummmmy. Very nice owner and employees were super sweet. Super flaky pastry. Chicken mole was very good. Sausage roll was spicy and tasty. I feel that the sausage was a bit on the dry side, but it was still quite good. Apple pie was fresh and delicious. Raspberry Pop-tart type of thing suffered from too much raspberry and over-heating in the microwave. That type of pastry needs a toaster oven or the pastry loses its flakiness. Super amazing Americano!!!!! Can't wait to enjoy another pie and coffee! I ate my pictures before I could take them

Soula C.

Yelp
Sage Bakehouse is the perfect cozy cafe. The pies are fantastic - I love the classic Aussie, but can't say it's my favorite because every pie I've tried has been at the top. The coffee is perfect - homemade syrups and always expertly crafted. The ambiance is unbeatable - the upgrade to the outdoor patio space takes advantage of the gorgeous ocean view. You can definitely feel the love here and it's a perfect representation of a serene & picturesque slice of the coast. Sage is an excellent gathering place, "work from home" away from home, and enjoyable even when just popping in to grab and go. What a wonderful addition to Montara!

Yelp
So happy this location didn't stay empty too long after the coffee shop closed. They too have great coffee and a solid tea selection. The pies are delicious. Always down for a good savory and pie and sometimes they have a sweet option (but I think they at least have a sweet pop tart always). Dog friendly patio is also a plus. Beautiful views.
google avatar

Dank G.

Yelp
Quality ingredients. Tasty pies. Savory. Friendly service. After I ordered I changed my mind on the pies and they were able to easily accommodate me. Fair value for the size (pies). But I wish I could pay a bit more for a larger size. 1 wasn't enough but 2 would be more than enough. The pop tart was absolutely delicious and seasonal. The sausage roll was also delicious. I wish it were larger. Also the meat in the roll is very lean.

Yelp
Dude goes to New Zealand, gets engaged, eats his way through NZ, comes home to Bay Area and decides he's going to do his own version of these famous savory hand pies...and boy howdy he's done it! These are the most buttery, flaky & delicious hearty pucks you'll find outside of a 16 hr flight down under I recon. They got all the classics...minced meat w/cheddar, beef & potato, Shepard's pie, curry lamb,...plus new (CA) classics like pork verde, BBQ pulled pork, Hungarian chicken paprikash...and veggie only options including mushroom, curry butternut squash. Nice tea selection too...and coffee. Equally as tasty is their ample outdoor patio overlooking Hwy 1 and the Pacific Ocean.

Yelp
Otherworldly breakfast quiche with waterfront view. Had the privilege of staring at the nice houses owned by nimbys

Marisa C.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings. Appreciate this business in our very tiny community, and love the idea. And the chai latte is amazing. But the service is iffy, they are constantly sold out of most of their offerings, and the pies are very expensive.
google avatar

Allan A.

Yelp
Everytime I pass this spot I tell myself I'll stop and check it out. We'll? Finally made time and now I'll be returning more frequently. They make a lot of syrups in-house for their drinks. I had a lavender latte that was really good. And the meat pies, man. Had to try a few. Beef n cheese, Hungarian chicken, the chicken pot pie and they had this matcha berry pound cake that had me drooling. Each meat pie was just as good as the next! See u guys soon

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in for a cup of coffee yesterday. What we came away with was a delightful experience and some baked goods. We purchased a mild sausage roll, 2 chicken pot pies and a blueberry pie. We scarfed up the sausage roll as soon as we got home but saved the pot pies for lunch today. The crust was so good. Crispy, light, melt in your mouth and the filling was like heaven. The combination of crust and filling was the best I have ever tasted. Nick, the owner, was so welcoming and we enjoyed some great conversation. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
These pies are to die for. Actually everything I've had from Sage bakehouse is soooo goooooddd. Including the deserts! Will be back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
So happy we stumbled upon this place! I had a London Fog with Orange cream syrup and it was one of the best London Fogs I've ever had. I will dream about this drink. We also had a curry butternut squash savory pie and a pumpkin cheesecake pop tart - both were fantastic! Also the prices were very reasonable! Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Asha R.

Yelp
We ordered several things here - Hungarian pot pie, chicken pot pie, and the pop tarts as well as espresso drinks. The espresso drinks were excellent - perfectly balanced. Baked goods were solid, with a flaky buttery crust, but pricey though. We will definitely be back for more coffee. Service was friendly and efficient.
google avatar

Yelp
Wowow! Ok, so the customer service is next level amazing. The chai I had was excellent and the over vibe is A+. So happy the coast has a great "newer" spot! Bravo!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
My first time here today.. I'm splendidly surprised. I have been feeling like this area needs a GOOD coffee spot with a welcoming vibe, that is pleasing to the eye. My mocha was delicious, staff friendly, space clean and small but also spacious with ample patio seating. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Tristan T.

Yelp
Great service and yummy pies! So happy to have discovered this cozy spot! I will definitely be back and was happy to learn they encourage people to come and enjoy the work space which is great for those of us who wfh to have a change of scenery.
google avatar

Hools W.

Yelp
The pies and drinks are delicious, the seating area (indoor and outdoor) is great, and the staff are super friendly. Arrive early because they sell out of many items as the day progresses. You can place an order days in advance to make sure they will have what you want.

Meryl C.

Yelp
So yummy! Fun spot to stop for food - and cannot recommend the frozen pies enough. Easy, delish meal.
google avatar

Yelp
These pies are the best -- such a cool business, great staff, delicious pies ! Great place to stop for coffee or a snack on your way up the 1! P.s. they ship too, do it

Tamara T.

Yelp
stood at counter for 10minutes with no greeting. watched workers move at a snails pace.

Bruce A.

Yelp
Everything is so dang good. The first time I went here, they happened to be sold out of the pie I wanted, so I decided to try another. I most definitely did not regret that decision. The crust is consistently excellent across all of their pies and provides a launchpad for all the different fillings to explore. Just....heck yeah.

Ellen M.

Yelp
The food is wonderful. We bought two frozen pies, a chicken curry and a Hungarian chicken. The instructions for baking baking were right and both were delicious and filling. The pie crust was scrumptious!
google avatar

Surita G.

Yelp
A friend raved about this new gem on the coast that serves the most amazing savory pies so I had to go check it out. The crust is buttery, flaky goodness. Both, the Red Curry Lamb and the Harissa Lamb are amazing. Flavorful, well balanced, perfectly cooked fillings- all around very well executed. Excellent new addition to the coast!

Diane T.

Yelp
When the old cafe closed and this place stayed empty, we were truly sad. This new cafe is serving great locally roasted beans and savory pies. Best part is that it lives up to the hype. We can't wait to come back and try more pies. Get that pie stamp!

A N.

Yelp
Stopped by here with a friend on a rainy day last week and was met with a bright smile when we entered. The warm atmosphere was the perfect place to catch up with a friend. I explained my complicated mocha chai order and the barista, Giselle, was so eager to make me happy. She made the BEST one I've ever had. I strolled in again today and was immediately met again with the friendliest welcome from the staff. I once again had the best coffee and was so impressed by how friendly they all were! Hoping to try the pies on my next visit! I make a point to visit all the Bay Area coffee shops and this coffee house is my new favorite! Great coffee, awesome atmosphere, and fantastic service! A gem!

Sue

Yelp
Horrible little pies. Tasted horrific and expensive to boot. The egg in it was hardened like microwaved egg. Disgusting. Croissant had bad meat in it. Horrid. Total waste of money
